James B. Irwin was an American astronaut born in 1930 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He received degrees in Naval Science, Aeronautical Engineering, and Instrumentation Engineering. Irwin was selected by NASA to be an astronaut in 1966 and served as the lunar module pilot for Apollo 15 from July to August 1971, making him the eighth person to walk on the moon.
