Virgil Ivan Grissom was an astronaut born on April 3, 1926, in Mitchell, Indiana, and became an astronaut in April 1959 after a military career. He attended Purdue University and had a family with his wife Betty, with whom he had two children. Grissom tragically died on January 26, 1967, during a pre-launch test for the Apollo 1 mission when a fire broke out.

• His Parent’s names were Dennis and Cecile Grissom.
• He was born in Mitchell Indiana.
• He went to school at Mitchell High School. He had one sister and two brothers.
• He was very interested in space.

4. COLLEGE AND CAREER
• Grissom went to college at Purdue University.
• He earned a Bachelor Degree of science.
• His first job was in the military.
• He became an astronaut on April 1959.

5. ADULT LIFE
• He was got married to Betty.
• Virgil and Betty had two children.
• He loved to spend time with his family.
• Virgil lived in Florida for a long time.
• Died January 26, 1967
• Grissom was killed along with fellow astronauts Ed White and Roger Chaffee during a pre-
launch test for the Apollo 1 mission at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (then known as
Cape Kennedy), Florida.
