Descriptive Essay About Beach
The Beach
You have been in the car for a very long three days. You have sat in a line of cars 10 miles long. You
have endured your annoying siblings, stressed out parents and the cramped space of the car. You
have eaten junk food and soda for days. Your legs are screaming to move, you think you will never
arrive. You have heard rumors about the beach. Sand so white it sparkles, water crystal clear, ships
the size of buildings, and hotel rooms the sizes of houses. You finally start to see the first signs of
the ocean first the tall tan coconut trees, then the smell of the salt water, and then the roar of the
waves. Then you finally see it the ocean, so big and so blue. Full of life, adventure, and discovery.
After unpacking and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The food at the beach is amazing and one of kind. You decide to get crab legs at the buffet, but you
don 't know how to eat them so you ask your dad. Your dad looks at you and says "Son, seafood is
the best thing ever created". You tell your dad "We'll see". After taking your first bite of crab you
finally realize what all the praise is about. You tell your dad "You were right seafood is the best".
After you and your family are done eating you continue on the boardwalk walk. As you are walking
you can 't help but look into all the stores and surf shop windows. You want everything in there but
you know your parents will say no. Your parents do however let you go into one surf shop that has
little turtles. You beg your parents to let you get one, you almost break them, but they said they
would decide towards the end of the week. After you are done walking, your family decides to get
some some ice cream. You find this ice cream shop with 50 different flavors you don 't know what
you 're going to choose, but you eventually decide on mint chocolate chip. The mint chocolate chip
is really good and maybe even better than the locale ice cream shop back at home.
After you 're done with ice cream you head back to the hotel after letting your stomach settle. Your
family decides to go crabbing, you have never been crabbing before and don't know what to expect.
The first shock comes when you realize you have to touch the crabs to get them out of the net. The

Asymmetry In Crabs
On the other hand, symmetry is an ancestral trait and that asymmetry is believed to be a secondary
characteristic developed by an animal organism as a response to stressors in its environment
(McLaughlin, et al., 2004). Symmetry and asymmetry is usually measured among bilateral
characters in an organism such as the bilateral segments in a decapod pereiopods. The decapod crab
Ranina ranina have several bilateral characters such as the spines on its carapace and the segments
comprising its pereiopods. Asymmetry in crabs has been a subject of interest among evolutionary
biologist as it gives the idea as to how a certain character evolve in shape in order to accommodate
genetic and environmental perturbations resulting to the formation of ... Show more content on

Asymmetry in decapods has been a focus of an on and off interest as observed by Oppenheimer
(1974) in McLaughlin, et al.,(2004) among carcinologist as decapod asymmetry has been a focus of
importance for nearly a century (Przibram 1905; Emmel 1908), then interest plummeted and risen
again. Asymmetry in abdomen shape between male and female crab have been observed among
Ranina ranina as early as the instar 1 larval stage (Minagawa, 1993) rendering this character to be
sexually dimorphic among these crabs. Posteriorly attached to the carapace, these structure provides
adherence for eggs for ovigerous females. What makes the R. ranina abdomen unique among crab
species is it attachment to the carapace. While in most crabs, abdomen are folded towards the
ventral aspect of the crab, in R. ranina, it is partially extended away from the ventral aspect that it
looks like a tail instead of as an abdomen. The abdomen also participates in the digging activity of
the crab (Faulks, 2006). Asymmetry in pleopods was observed among paguroids as an offshoot of
the type of shells they are inhabiting. Asymmetry in shapes are often associated with the frequent
use of a particular character such as handedness or constant use (McLaughlin, et

The Importance Of Outdoor Recreation On The Environment
INTRODUCTION There is no doubt that planet Earth is ever–changing. The emergence of new
species, extinction of extant species, rise and fall of climate, and much more are completely natural
occurrences; however, there is one terrifying force that changes the world much faster than most of
its inhabitants can handle: humans. Ever since humans began to populate the Earth, we have been
exploiting natural resources and depleting populations, thus harming countless communities and
ecosystems. As our population continues to increase, we destroy more and more natural habitats,
negatively impacting biological diversity by decreasing the abundance of individuals per species
(Hunter 2007). Many studies in the past have looked into how overexploitation of resources, habitat
loss due to development, and the release of fossil fuels from production result in the decline of
biodiversity (Goulletquer et al. 2014), but one form of human disturbance is often overlooked:
recreation. The increasing popularity of outdoor recreation can affect wildlife in numerous ways,
usually resulting in the avoidance of disturbed habitat (Coppes et al. 2017).
Many studies have been done observing the impact of human disturbance on flagship species in
popular recreational destinations such as forests and oceans. For instance, one study done in the
Southern Black Forest revealed that red–deer avoided areas near hiking trails, preferred to live in
dense, undisturbed areas in the forest, and were more active

Limulus Polyphemus: The American Horseshoe Crabs
Literature Review
The American horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) has persisted largely unaltered for millions of
years (Smith et al. 2006), and has ancestors that date back 450 million years (Swan, 2005). Limulus
polyphemus inhabits the eastern coast of the United States (Goode & Wahle, n.d., Swan, 2005),
from the Yucatan Peninsula to the Gulf of Mexico (Shuster, 1979; Moore & Perkin, 2007). Limulus
polyphemus are found within estuaries, coastal embayments, and on the inshore continental shelves
near the mouths of estuaries, usually in waters that are less than 30 meters deep (Botton et al. 2003;
Sekiguichi & Shuster, 2011). Four species of horseshoe crabs exist worldwide; however, Limulus
polyphemus is the only species found in the United ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, even in ecosystems where Gemma gemma was the most numerically dominant
macroinvertebrate, it was largely avoided and virtually excluded from the diet of horseshoe crabs
(Botton, 1984). Also, because there is a size inequality between male and female horseshoe crabs, it
is thought that the diets of male and female crabs may differ. Females are much larger than males,
which could enable the females to feed on larger prey. Females also dig deeper into the substrate
than males, which could give them access to fauna that is unavailable to males (Botton,

Taking a Look at Horseshoe Crabs
Horseshoe crabs are considered "living fossils" or evolutionary survivors because the external
appearance barely changed in over 150 million years. The horseshoe crab is part of the arthropods,
which include organisms such as spiders and scorpions. The horseshoe crab is made up of the
prosoma, which is the head, opisthosoma, which represents the central part of the body and the
telson, which is the tail. The tail is harmless and is only used to help the crab flip itself over if it's
turned over on the wrong side. Horseshoe crabs have been researched numerous times. Findings
include their, ancestry, survival, morphological changes (if any) and phylogenetic research among
the different variations of horseshoe crabs. Studies have found information on ancestral species of
current horseshoe crabs. Xiphosurids, which are very old fossils that were not easily found;
however, they were compared in body structure of current time horseshoe crabs and showed that
there was hardly any change in the body structure. The body plan of a xiphosurid is described as
having large crescent like shield in the anterior portion of its body resembling an invertibrate with
lateral compound eyes. Xiphosurids are also classified as having opisthosomal tergites built into a
thoracetron and having a long styliform telson (Rudkin et al. 2008). Ancestry of xiphosurid has so
far been researched as a group of rare Middle–Late Palaeozoic fossil arthropods, which are in the
group of

Theme Of Nature In The Pearl Steinbeck
After I read "The Pearl", I learned that once our enemy has become nature itself, our animal instincts
take over. After Kino's house burned down and his canoe destroyed, Steinbeck quotes, "He was an
animal now, for hiding, for attacking, and he lived only to preserve himself and his family."
(Steinbeck, 64). I used to think that we humans would be able to maintain our sanity through any
situation. However, Kino taught me that we all become animals when nature becomes our enemy
such as the time when he left the town: "The wind blew fierce and strong, and it pelted them with
bits of sticks, sand, and little rocks." (Steinbeck, 69). From this, we're shown that once they've left
their home, their "paradise", nature becomes their enemy, and it haunts them in every corner. During
this period, Kino becomes more animal–like such as his response to when he and Juana saw the pool
of water: "They came utterly weary to the pool, and Juana slumped to her knees...Kino drank long
and thirstily at the pool." (Steinbeck, 80). One aspect I like about the story is how nature had
protected Kino, his family and the villagers. Steinbeck states, "The beach was yellow sand, but at
the water's edge a rubble of shell and algae took its place. Fiddler crabs bubbled and sputtered in
their holes in the sand, and in the shallows little lobsters popped in and out of their tiny homes in the
rubble and sand. The sea bottom was rich with crawling and swimming and growing things. The
brown algae waved in the

The Maryland Blue Crab ( Callinectes Sapidus )
Organism Profile SCIN 130
Species Profile of the Maryland Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus)
Roberto Garcia
American Public University System
Abstract
The Callinectes sapidus also known commonly as the Maryland Blue Crab, is a crustacean found in
the Chesapeake Bay. The blue crab is found in aquatic environments, most often in estuaries. It
characterized by it's blue claws. The blue crabs undergo a life cycle of: zoeae, megalop, juvenile,
and adulthood. The blue crab's hard shells serve as a protective barrier for external dangers. The
Callinectes sapidus comes from the order of Decapods, whereby it's carapace has now evolved to be
better suited for swimming. Of interest is the blue crab's mating ... Show more content on

It shares ancestral background with shrimp and lobsters. They are omnivores with their prey being
mussels, fish, plants, and smaller blue crabs (Society). Although the Blue Crab is well established
within its ecosystem it is highly sensitive to environmental and habitat changes ("Blue Crab,
Maryland State Crustacean", 2016). The detrimental conditions of the Chesapeake Bay have
affected the populations of Blue Crabs along with over harvesting.
Life Cycle The life cycle of a Blue Crab involves Zoeae, Megalops, Juveniles, and Adulthood
(Zinski, 2006) ("Blue Crab Life Cycle, 2016). Mating occurs only once for female crabs. Female
crabs undergo a pubertal mold which is indicative of a sexually mature state in their life cycle.
During the pubertal molt females release pheromones which attract males. The actual ritual of
mating does not occur until females molt their shells (Zinski, 2006). At which point females will
then retreat to high salinity water to begin spawning. Spawning will occur for the first time 2–9
months after mating. Interestingly, males will protect females during the period which females have
molted and it is at this point in which mating occurs (Hill, 2004). As previously mentioned Blue
Crabs are highly susceptible to changes in environmental conditions. As an example, larvae require
high salinity waters. Larvae require salinity of at least 20 ppt and below that threshold, there is poor
likelihood of survival ability.

The Advertising Campaign Of 'Union Is Strength'
"United" Recently, there have been issues of gender, race, ethnicity, police brutality, and more
throughout the United States. Countless stories can be heard of white cops shooting black men,
professional football players kneeling for the National Anthem, and people being pushed to the
brink of suicide for being made fun of for being "different." As a nation, the people are divided.
Everyone is in their own little group. Black men tend to hang out with black men. White men tend to
hang out with other white men. United. It's in the name of this country. United we stand, divided we
fall. In the advertisement campaign for "Union Is Strength," (Link 1) there are many examples that
symbolize why it is better to be united rather than divided and why this series of advertisements is
considered so influential due to it's inspiring message and endless number of interpretations and
uses. The future of this country really depends on people sticking together. There is even a campaign
of advertisements dedicated to this. There are three advertisements under the name, "Union is
Strength" that depict this. Each commercial is thirty seconds long and is trying to reach the same
conclusion. The first commercial in the campaign shows a group of crabs walking on the sand. A
seagull is seen flying overhead. The seagull singles out a crab and dives down to eat
Wilson 2 it. The other crabs on the beach see what is going on and team up to take on the

Red King Crabs Stomach Analysis
Red king crabs were collected for stomach analysis and abundance estimates by using a specially
designed beam trawl, previously used in surveys for stock assessment by the Institute of Marine
Research (IMR). The crab trawl is 6 m wide, 1 m high, and is equipped with a 135 mm mesh size
polyethylene net (Sundet & Berenboim 2008). The hauling speed was approximately 1.65 kn. It was
not possible to use a fixed standardized trawling distance because of the changing and rocky bottom
topography. Four hauls were also performed with a shrimp bottom trawl in 2005, to catch fish for
stomach analysis for another study not included in this paper. However, as red king crabs were
caught during four of these hauls (Table 3), stomach analysis of these crabs

The Importance Of Swimming
Humans enjoy participating in a large amount of activities, whether it be for competition or just for
leisure. One of these many activities is swimming. When swimming just for fun, humans can
participate in activities such as swimming in the ocean, swimming at local pools, swimming in
lakes, and even swimming in rivers. The only problem that humans have when it comes to being in
the water is that it is physically impossible for someone to stay underwater for an extended period of
time.
Most humans who are in good health are only able to hold their breaths for about two minutes. The
exception to this time is those who breathe pure oxygen prior to attempting to hold their breath.
After breathing pure oxygen for about thirty minutes. Ricardo Bahia from Brazil held his breath for
twenty minutes and twenty–one seconds. While this is an amazing feat, most humans are
unfortunately unable to achieve this record. It is for this reason that humans invented special gear to
help make breathing underwater easier and safer. With this special gear humans are able to spend
longer times underwater without the danger of drowning.

Horseshoe Crab Essay
The horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus
The horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus is known as a marine chelicerate arthropod. It's from the
Limulidae family and more commonly found along the northern Atlantic coast of North America.
The horseshoe crab makes use of different habits depending on it's current stage of development.
They lay there eggs on the coastal beaches during the late spring and summer. Once the eggs hatch,
the young horseshoe crabs are found offshore, within sandy areas of tidal flats. Adult horseshoe
crabs are found in deeper parts of the ocean waters (National Wildlife Federation). The horseshoe
crab is more related to arachnids, which is a group related to spiders and scorpions, rather than
crustaceans, which are more related to crabs, shrimps and lobsters (Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission).
The lifespan of a horseshoe crab is up to 20–40 years in the wild. There structure has not changed
much for the past 445 million years. One hypothesis is that the hard exoskeleton of horseshoe crab
allows them to survive predators and as a result they have been to live through many decades.

to as a molt, which acts as their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Visual cues are used to locate nesting pairs, and chemical help decide if they want to stay with the
nesting female. While approaching potential mates, male horseshoe crabs use visual cues to find
female shells that are buried in the sand to differentiate their sizes (Schwab). Visual cues are also
crucial during mating, since it's been found that light is a major factor that's associated with the
seasonal and diurnal variability (Barlow). Visual cues also promote other behavioral response that

Case based essay-Phillips Seafood
In this case, Ron Birch, product manager for the new pasteurized king crab of Phillips Foods, needs
to make a decision for the phase II of launch of king crab. He planned to continue the magazine
strategy used in phase I, but Cherry Stockworth, vice–president of marketing of Phillips Foods,
recommended him to use the budget to support half of cost of International Boston Seafood Show.
According to the information given in this case, I don't think this is an either–or choice, and my
recommendation for Ron Birch is to decrease the cost of ads in trade magazines, change the content
of ads in magazines before and after the IBSS, and support the IBSS in March

The king crab of Phillips belongs to fresh seafood, which means it has huge market potential.
Customers tend to buy food that is easy–cooked and fresh, which is a feature of the king crab
product. The IBSS is a nation–wide trade show which could attract a lot of exhibitors and
attendance. Making use of this platform could help Phillips to build its reputation and promote its
products at the same time.
Threat: Just because the IBSS could attract a large amount of exhibitors, the competition during the
trade show is fierce. Though there are so many potential customers would appear at the trade show,
how could Phillips beat the competitors and attracts enough customers to its booth. Another threat
for king crab is the possible rejection of the retailers because they would feel risky to replace an old
product with a new product.
Pros and Cons of Alternative Strategies
Trade advertising strategy
Pros: Trade magazine is one of the most important sources for decision–makers and they will spend
relatively long time in reading magazines. This strategy would cost less than trade show strategy and
would reach broader potential customers.
Cons: Effectiveness for brand building and lead generation of ads on magazines are 50.2% and
47.4%, lower than effectiveness of trade show, which are 60.9% and 62.6%. The rate of readers call

Blue Crabs
Maryland is known for their blue crabs, but if crabbers exploit the blue crabs' population,
Maryland's famous blue crabs will be extinct. Blue crabs play a large economic role in Maryland as
they bring in money for the state, whether it be from people going crabbing or eating crabs. With all
the benefits of blue crabs in Maryland, the government has taken a stand to ensure a large blue crab
population in the future.
The blue crab population in the Chesapeake Bay was considered to be a surplus from the 1950s to
around the 2000s as well as in the Bay's tributaries (Stagg & Whilden, 1997). The blue crabs in
Maryland live for about three years (Stagg & Whilden, 1997). This is part of the reason that it's so
important that a high level of blue crabs is maintained so that they'll be able to produce offspring
future generations. Approximately 75% of the entire blue crab population is made up of the crabs in
Maryland (Lui, 2015). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The female blue crab population increased by 32 million from 2014 to 2015 to be a 101 million

population increased by 93 million for there to be a total of 194 million female blue crabs ("Blue
Crab", 2016). This increase was important because it showed the regulations place were working
and that they did not need to be modified. Also, the female blue crab population is substantially over
the threshold of 70 million, which infers that the blue crabs are not being overharvested. The total
blue crab population in Maryland increased by 114 million in 2015 and by 142 million in 2016 to
553 million ("2016 Blue," 2016). The rise in the total population supported that the regulations in

amount that the female blue crabs were harvested, the population was able to steadily increase over

Horseshoe Crabs Evolution
The argument the author puts forth is that horseshoe crabs have evolved over the eras. That they're
not "living fossils". Horseshoe crabs have "rounded cephalic shields, that were like the extinct
trilobites, and an arrangement of legs and gills", no wonder people think they are living fossils. This
is the beginning to how these historic animals have evolved. Three years ago, the author took a trip
to Delaware. As his family was walking on the beach they came across some horseshoe crabs
mating. He wondered how they have changed. The type of horseshoe crab he saw along the beach
was called "limulus polyphemus". Limulus Polyphemus is not found in the fossil records. The fossil

These are boomerang like and have a "double button". Liomesaspis is another type of fossil, it has a
different body plan, and are "historically greater within the group than what we observe today". A
different fossil is called Mesolimulus, preserved about 150 million years ago, it looks similar to the
nowadays Limulus. The environment in the ancient sea, which contained crustaceans, molluscs, and
echinoderms, helped the hypothesis that 112 million years ago the area was covered in shallow
lagoons. Numerous Cretaceous dinosaur tracks have been found near Glen Rose, Texas. This is
where horseshoe crabs were found in Paluxy River. There was also a surprising discovery. The fossil
of the horseshoe crab is preserved as an exterior and interior mold. The fossil preserved traces of
activity by other organisms. The interior mold shows traces left by small invertebrates, that fed on
the horseshoe crab after it died. These worms created the mold of the fossil, and the detail was so
detailed that the artificial caset was almost an exact replica. This was very surprising and awesome
because this shows how invertebrates can preserve other animals anatomies. The reason for this
being: soon after the horseshoe crab died, the worms began to settle upon the horseshoe crab. The
worms began building homes, and the tubes took form of the dead horseshoe crab. Because of the
rate the worms created their homes, the author predicts the horseshoe

European Green Crabs
Degradation of the economy, environment and human health is caused by a variety of species.
However, the most harmful types of species are known as invasive species. An invasive species is
any species that is not native to the environment it is living in. European Green Crabs in particular
cause mass harm to their surrounding habitat. However, there are several methods put in place to
control the widespread of these creatures and minimize the harm caused by European green crabs.
The European green crab can spread accidentally and then stay and cause harm to their new
surroundings. Although these green crabs can cause serious harm, there are multiple measures in

Eelgrass beds in particular are being harmed where European green crabs are abundant, because
they are the primary habitats for this invasive species. The European green crabs invade these eel
grass beds when they are searching for prey in the matter that has settled at the bottom of the water
or excavating to make burrows, this is done by cutting the roots of the eelgrass, which destroys this
ecological habitat. European green crabs have preyed on various marine life such as species of
mollusks, crustaceans and fish. The primary species that European green crabs prey upon being
shellfish. Shellfish (oyster, clam and scallops) being their primary source of nutrition (GOV, 2016)
is an issue because they then create competition for food amongst other species such as lobster and
crabs which are native to the habitat the European green crab has invaded. Their secondary source of
nutrition comes from crustaceans such as crab, crayfish, lobster, prawns or shrimp. Additionally,
Studies have shown that European green crabs will prey upon Dungeness crabs of equal or lesser
size (Peters et al. 2004). This means that European green crabs are capable of displacing other crabs
in the competition for space, food and habitat. Recently, a study was conducted which showed a
40% drop in Manila clam harvest since the European green crabs' arrival in North America (pleus,
2017). Carcinus maenas

Our findings reveal that there is no significant difference in abundance, sex distribution, or size
distribution among the highly populated site, the partially populated site, and unpopulated site (p–

presence results in the decreased presence, decreased size, and skewed sex ratio of sand crabs. As a
result, we accept our null hypothesis that the amount of human presence has no significant effect on

desired for data collection. We also did not count ourselves as part of the human presence. Perhaps a
greater number of people, including ourselves in the count, and a greater difference of human
presence between the collection sites would yield us with more appropriate results. Furthermore,
any human error in collecting the samples, measuring the carapace, or identifying the sex of the sand

recruitment is most intense during the spring (Cox & Dudley 1968), possibly resulting in the

A long time ago crabs used to walk straight and forward. They lived in an oasis by a desert. They
were happy there, they had all that they needed, food, water, shelter and entertainment in a paradise.
The oasis was sacred to Poseidon, and he blessed them so they would never have any problems

outside at night. The crabs were happy with life and listened to him, because why not? They had all

Blue Crab Essay
Sometimes you may wonder just how much impact one little creature can have on an environment?
Well a great example is the blue crab. This one crab is the keystone of the food web, and it's both
prey and predator. If the blue crabs were to die off, things they eat like marsh periwinkles, smaller
crustaceans, and thin shelled bivalves would become overpopulated. Especially marsh periwinkles
which are kept under control by the blue crabs. Not only would the harm of blue crabs affect prey,
but it would also affect predators. If the blue crab population were to drop even more, the animals
that rely on the crab as their main food source would suffer. A lot of predators feed on blue crabs.
For example birds, fish, some sharks, and even other blue crabs. But the main predator of the blue ...

Due to warming waters, pollution, and irregular weather patterns, the crabs are dying. But that isn't
the only reason. The crabs are also dying because of something called recruitment overfishing.
That's when lots of adult crabs are caught before they have time to reproduce, which leaves a
smaller population made up of mostly young offspring. In 2015 37.3 million pounds of blue crabs
were caught just in the chesapeake bay and its tributaries! Though there's a lot you can do to help.
Normal people can change the bay by keeping a few simple things in mind. One as simple as follow
speed signs when boating. If u boat too fast over patches of the underwater blue crab grass you
could damage it and the crabs. Also, think extra hard about not polluting. If you live in any of the
watershed states, any litter or pollution will eventually end up in the bay or one of its tributaries. So
next time you see a plastic bottle or bag laying by a creek or go boating think about how it affects
the crabs. With just a little time and effort we can help the blue crabs and all species apart of their
food web, including you and

Sacculina Carcini Looking under the sea one could see a crab seemingly gorging itself, feeding for
more than one. It has a large abdomen associated with being female and seems to be cleaning algae
off the eggs she carries. One might believe that this is a female crab simply caring for its offspring
but they would be assuming wrong. The crab is actually male, displaying female tendencies. Why
this crab is showing such odd behavior can be explained by looking into the parasite that has
infected it, Sacculina carcini. S. carcini is a type of parasite that has a special characteristic, it can
manipulate its host's physical body and behavior. This parasite tricks its host into helping it survive
and reproduce. In this case Sacculina carcini change their host, the crab, or Carcinus maenas. The
parasite begins its life as a larvae exiting a host and then wondering the sea, looking for a viable host
to infect for themselves. The larvae molts several times for the five to six days following the escape
from their predecessor's host. This is when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only does the male crabs begin to act like females, but both female and male crabs are sterilized.
The tendrils that spread through the body of the crab from the parasite sterilize it and collect
nutrients. The nutrients is only able to be collected because the crab begin to eat more, taking bolder
risks. This is especially detrimental because the parasite prevents the crab from malting meaning its
claws and legs that are lost can no longer be rejuvenated meaning its defensive shell is worthless.
This also means a crab usually only lasts about 1–2 years after being infected, but through that time
the Sacculina carcina is able to produce many eggs as it has males living inside of it, fertilizing the
hundreds of eggs it produces

Crabs In Delaware Bay
Each spring, the Delaware Bay becomes the site of one of the most spectacular and ancient
phenomena in the natural world: the spawning of horseshoe crabs and the flocking of ravenous
shorebirds that depend on them. On moonlit nights in May and June, thousands of the crabs crawl
ashore on Delaware Bay beaches at high tide to lay eggs, as they have for 450 million years. The
crabs are sometimes so dense that the water's edge looks like a road paved with brown shells. WHY
COUNT THE CRABS? Knowing how many horseshoe crabs there are helps fisheries managers
develop effective policy for managing populations. You can help by volunteering to count the crabs
in May and June. To help with the crab survey, register with the Delaware Department of

Animals Save The Environment
Animals play key roles in the environment. They help keep natural process running smoothly.
Insects help in pollinating diverse plants around the world. Scavengers clean up the carcasses of
dead animals everywhere. There are also many different animals that help the environment by
recycling various human and animal products. Carnivores, omnivores, and herbivores also keep
each other with in the proper population limit. Many of these animals are part of each other's food
supplies as well. Since all of these animals help one another and us, why would we not want to
protect them? Some people might say that protecting animals waste money. The government spends
thousands of dollars on preserving habitats for animals all across our nation. They would say this
money could be better put to use. The schools need better equipment, roads are in awful conditions,
and our government is already in enough debt that they should not be spending any more than
necessary. The animal's welfare should be one of the last concerns the government has. They argue
that the animals only take up space in the world. With the human population always increasing, this
is space we could use to house people. The bigger cities are over filled as they are. If we could have
some people move out of those cities and build new ones. They could move to the places where the
national habitats are and create new, cleaner cities there. There are many more arguments that
people may make to stop the animal

The Effects Of Seismic Surveys On Fauna
The present study monitored the direct and indirect Impacts of seismic surveys on fauna of the
mangrove using Birds Insects, Crabs, Reptiles and fishes as representative taxa. During the 3D
seismic survey, tools, labour and machineries were used inside the mangrove forests. Major sources
of faunal impacts observed during the seismic survey operations were from, 1) Physical presence
and movement of the labour and machinery within the forest and 2) Noise and vibration generated
from shooting (underground explosions). There are four major steps involved in the seismic surveys,
that result in disturbances to the system such as initial survey of the area, laying of cables and
geophones, shot hole drilling, and seismic wave generation through underground explosion
(underground explosion). Many elements of mangrove fauna were observed to be disturbed due to
these exploration process especially people interference.
Impacts on Mangrove fauna
There are many direct short–term impacts on mangrove fauna from 3D seismic survey as observed
in the field. These temporary effects had mostly short–term impacts since the survey normally lasted
only for few days in any given area. Faunal impacts of prospecting exploration activities through 3D
seismic data acquisition can be categorized broadly into two; direct and indirect impacts. Direct
impacts include changes in activity patterns of mangrove fauna especially birds and crabs in
response to the 3D seismic survey activity. Indirect impacts to

Diversity and Abundance of Scavenger Species in Seagrass Beds
Diversity and abundance of scavenger species in seagrass beds in comparison to intertidal flat
zonations in estuarine environments.
Introduction
Scavenger species that live in estuarine environments, are organisms that niche in the trophic
structure just before detritivores. The energy and nutrients broken down, is then passed back into the
ecosystem, where the detritivores further complete the breakdown process of organic matter. They
are opportunists when it comes to their diet, scrounging for any organic material to eat, which can
place immense pressure on the organism to survive, if essential resources are deficient. Scavengers
are herbivoric and carnivorous, allowing them to nourish on any organic matter available to them,
whether they be dead or living. (Nielsena & A.Gosselina, 2011).
Intertidal (mud) flats are shielded intertidal and shallow sub tidal areas (Quinn, 2014), with
significant ecosystems that provide a diversity of highly productive, environmental habitats that are
essential sources of food for fish during times of high tide, and for birds in low tide. The sediment
composition of intertidal flats depends on the "interactions between the physical, chemical and
biological processes" (Widdows, et al., 2004), but the sediment if mainly fine particles and mostly
muds. The sediment itself can also either have vegetation growth or be a completely bare flat region.

due to the increased exploitation of nonrenewable resources by humans. The focus of the study was
to determine how ocean acidification would affect embryo development and larval release time,
larval survivorship, and the carryover effects from one life history stage to another. To create
acidified conditions they used CO2, which changed the pH of the seawater to 7.7. The results

Figure 2 demonstrates the measurements from the digital images taken of larvae. This allows us to
measure from the same locations on the larvae, using this we can compare data to Long et al paper.
The first table showed the average water parameters between acidified and control samples, with the
corresponding standard errors. Four of the parameters had the same units (HCO3–, DIC, alkalinity,
and CO32–), a good visual way to show the difference between them would be to plot these four
parameters on a scatter graph. Table 2 had a lot of data contained in it this made it a little
overwhelming trying to figure out what the data meant. The authors in figure 3 showed a bar chart
describing PC1 for the differences in acidified and control conditions, for both March and February.
Long et al., did not go into detail about PC3, although, another bar chart for PC2 depicting treatment
and months could have improved the paper. For female calcification and survival (figure 4) three bar
graphs were plotted; with embryonic treatment on the x axis using subcategories March, February,
exuvia, and new shell; the y axis were Mg/Ca ratio, %Mg (dry mass), and %Ca (dry mass). They
used mostly bar graphs to visualize data, this is very repetitive and I think a more diverse group of

Opportunity: U.S. seafood market grew rapidly in recent years, and the biggest part of seafood sales
is fresh seafood, which is 54% of all seafood retail sales. The king crab of Phillips belongs to fresh
seafood, which means it has huge market potential. Customers tend to buy food that is easy–cooked
and fresh, which is a feature of the king crab product. The IBSS is a nation–wide trade show which
could attract a lot of exhibitors and attendance. Making use of this platform could help Phillips to
build its reputation and promote its products at the same time. Threat: Just because the IBSS could
attract a large amount of exhibitors, the competition during the trade show is fierce. Though there
are so many potential customers would appear at the trade show, how could Phillips beat the

Characteristics Of The Horseshoe Crab
Introduction: "Limulus polyphemus, the horseshoe crab, inhabits shallow–brackish marine
environments ranging from the Atlantic Ocean along the North American coastline to the Gulf
coasts of the United states and from the East coast of Mexico to the Yucatan Peninsula" (Walls,
Elizabeth). There are three other species of the horseshoe crab worldwide: Tachypleus tridentatus,
Tachypleus gigas, and Carconoscorpinus rotundicauda that closely resemble Limulus in structure
and habits, ranging from the Indian ocean to the Pacific Ocean along the coasts of Asia (National
Wildlife Federation).
"The horseshoe crab is known to be one of the "oldest living fossils"; which means that this
organism's morphology has essentially not changed from fossils found from earlier geologic times,
around 250 million years ago" (Noel Chartier). Based on the fact that the morphology has not
changed in so long it can be assumed that the horseshoe crab has not had to adapt to changing
environments and has been able to withstand a changing environment. "Due to the statement
regarding the "oldest living fossils," one can hypothesize that fossil records will show evidence that
fossils of extinct creatures look nearly identical to the creatures that are still living today" (Noel
Chartier).

living horseshoe crab and compared it to a fossil record of one, they would look almost identical to

Archeologists, paleontologists, and other researchers have proven the existence of dinosaurs. Fossil,

Depending on Horseshoe Crabs and Bait for Nutrition
Recently, various user groups have relied on horseshoe crabs for bait and nutrition. While concerns
have arisen that the horseshoe crab populations are declining, management of the American species
of horseshoe crabs has been surrounded by controversy (Davis et al., 2006). Historically, horseshoe
crabs have been considered a "trash–fish", not worthy of resources to establish their population data.
As a result, reporting regulations and harvest restrictions associated with this fishery have been
lacking (Baker et al., 2004).
Catch records for the Limulus commercial fishery in the Delaware Bay declined from 4 million
horseshoe crabs per year to less than 100,000 between the 1870s and the 1960s (Shuster and Botton,
1985). It wasn't until the second half of the 20th century that a commercial fishery on horseshoe
crabs developed to provide bait for use in catching eel (Anguilla rostrada) and whelk (Busycon spp.)
(Ferrari and Targett, 2003). The horseshoe crab commercial fishery has increased dramatically
beginning in 1990 (Berkson and Shuster, 1999). A variety of methods are employed by fishermen to
capture horseshoe crabs: trawls, dredges, hands, and gillnets (Berkson and Shuster, 1999). Entire
beaches covered in horseshoe crabs can easily be harvested by hand since these animals have
essentially no defense mechanism (Berkson and Shuster, 1999). Overall, one million Limulus were
landed on the Atlantic coastline between 1989 and 1992. This number grew to over two million by

scuttling from his shell to a new one once a year, easy prey for any passing squid" (16). Shortly after
the wave, Mau again identifies as a blue hermit crab, remarking that "he [has] no soul [because he
did not undergo the ceremonies that would grant one a man soul]. His boy soul had vanished with
the island, and he'd never get a man soul now. He [is] the blue hermit crab, hurrying from one shell
to another, and the big shell he had thought he could see had been taken away" (107). At this time,
he views his situation negatively. However, he later embraces this identity. He declares that "[he is]
the little blue hermit crab ... [a]nd [he is] running. But [he will] not be trapped in a shell again,
because ... any shell will be too small. [He wants] to know why" (174–5). In this quote, he uses "any

expresses his desire for knowledge. As a consequence of the adversity associated with the tidal
wave, Mau compares himself to a little blue hermit crab, scuttling between souls. As the novel

that attributes of nature are being utilized in some sense. In the case of the Chesapeake this can refer
to the crabbing, fishing, ecotourism and scenic values of the bay. Ecotourism is when people visit a

important for my protection because I would rather kill the aliens, instead of avoiding them. In order
to inject venom into the aliens, humans would need to have sharper teeth. I would sneak up on an
alien and bite them. This could immobilize the alien once the venom affects them. Two animals that
utilize venom are spiders and snakes. Speed would be another important protection method because
if a group of aliens were chasing you, they would not be able to keep up with your incredible speed.
If you were traveling in a large group, you could all go separate directions and confuse the aliens.
They would not be able to keep track of everyone or even be able to catch up to any human. This
would also include the speed of climbing things, such as trees and mountains. Two animals that
utilize this method of protection are the cobra and the rattlesnake. Webbed feet would also be an
important protection method for humans if they were being hunted by aliens. Webbed feet are
helpful for swimming and would allow humans to swim quickly away from the predators. Webbed
feet would make our feet look a lot different than they do now. We would walk differently with
webbed feet, but would swim very fast. I am a slow

Descriptive Essay About Beach

  • 1. Descriptive Essay About Beach The Beach You have been in the car for a very long three days. You have sat in a line of cars 10 miles long. You have endured your annoying siblings, stressed out parents and the cramped space of the car. You have eaten junk food and soda for days. Your legs are screaming to move, you think you will never arrive. You have heard rumors about the beach. Sand so white it sparkles, water crystal clear, ships the size of buildings, and hotel rooms the sizes of houses. You finally start to see the first signs of the ocean first the tall tan coconut trees, then the smell of the salt water, and then the roar of the waves. Then you finally see it the ocean, so big and so blue. Full of life, adventure, and discovery. After unpacking and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The food at the beach is amazing and one of kind. You decide to get crab legs at the buffet, but you don 't know how to eat them so you ask your dad. Your dad looks at you and says "Son, seafood is the best thing ever created". You tell your dad "We'll see". After taking your first bite of crab you finally realize what all the praise is about. You tell your dad "You were right seafood is the best". After you and your family are done eating you continue on the boardwalk walk. As you are walking you can 't help but look into all the stores and surf shop windows. You want everything in there but you know your parents will say no. Your parents do however let you go into one surf shop that has little turtles. You beg your parents to let you get one, you almost break them, but they said they would decide towards the end of the week. After you are done walking, your family decides to get some some ice cream. You find this ice cream shop with 50 different flavors you don 't know what you 're going to choose, but you eventually decide on mint chocolate chip. The mint chocolate chip is really good and maybe even better than the locale ice cream shop back at home. After you 're done with ice cream you head back to the hotel after letting your stomach settle. Your family decides to go crabbing, you have never been crabbing before and don't know what to expect. The first shock comes when you realize you have to touch the crabs to get them out of the net. The crabs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Asymmetry In Crabs On the other hand, symmetry is an ancestral trait and that asymmetry is believed to be a secondary characteristic developed by an animal organism as a response to stressors in its environment (McLaughlin, et al., 2004). Symmetry and asymmetry is usually measured among bilateral characters in an organism such as the bilateral segments in a decapod pereiopods. The decapod crab Ranina ranina have several bilateral characters such as the spines on its carapace and the segments comprising its pereiopods. Asymmetry in crabs has been a subject of interest among evolutionary biologist as it gives the idea as to how a certain character evolve in shape in order to accommodate genetic and environmental perturbations resulting to the formation of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Asymmetry in decapods has been a focus of an on and off interest as observed by Oppenheimer (1974) in McLaughlin, et al.,(2004) among carcinologist as decapod asymmetry has been a focus of importance for nearly a century (Przibram 1905; Emmel 1908), then interest plummeted and risen again. Asymmetry in abdomen shape between male and female crab have been observed among Ranina ranina as early as the instar 1 larval stage (Minagawa, 1993) rendering this character to be sexually dimorphic among these crabs. Posteriorly attached to the carapace, these structure provides adherence for eggs for ovigerous females. What makes the R. ranina abdomen unique among crab species is it attachment to the carapace. While in most crabs, abdomen are folded towards the ventral aspect of the crab, in R. ranina, it is partially extended away from the ventral aspect that it looks like a tail instead of as an abdomen. The abdomen also participates in the digging activity of the crab (Faulks, 2006). Asymmetry in pleopods was observed among paguroids as an offshoot of the type of shells they are inhabiting. Asymmetry in shapes are often associated with the frequent use of a particular character such as handedness or constant use (McLaughlin, et ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Importance Of Outdoor Recreation On The Environment INTRODUCTION There is no doubt that planet Earth is ever–changing. The emergence of new species, extinction of extant species, rise and fall of climate, and much more are completely natural occurrences; however, there is one terrifying force that changes the world much faster than most of its inhabitants can handle: humans. Ever since humans began to populate the Earth, we have been exploiting natural resources and depleting populations, thus harming countless communities and ecosystems. As our population continues to increase, we destroy more and more natural habitats, negatively impacting biological diversity by decreasing the abundance of individuals per species (Hunter 2007). Many studies in the past have looked into how overexploitation of resources, habitat loss due to development, and the release of fossil fuels from production result in the decline of biodiversity (Goulletquer et al. 2014), but one form of human disturbance is often overlooked: recreation. The increasing popularity of outdoor recreation can affect wildlife in numerous ways, usually resulting in the avoidance of disturbed habitat (Coppes et al. 2017). Many studies have been done observing the impact of human disturbance on flagship species in popular recreational destinations such as forests and oceans. For instance, one study done in the Southern Black Forest revealed that red–deer avoided areas near hiking trails, preferred to live in dense, undisturbed areas in the forest, and were more active ... • 7. Limulus Polyphemus: The American Horseshoe Crabs Literature Review The American horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) has persisted largely unaltered for millions of years (Smith et al. 2006), and has ancestors that date back 450 million years (Swan, 2005). Limulus polyphemus inhabits the eastern coast of the United States (Goode & Wahle, n.d., Swan, 2005), from the Yucatan Peninsula to the Gulf of Mexico (Shuster, 1979; Moore & Perkin, 2007). Limulus polyphemus are found within estuaries, coastal embayments, and on the inshore continental shelves near the mouths of estuaries, usually in waters that are less than 30 meters deep (Botton et al. 2003; Sekiguichi & Shuster, 2011). Four species of horseshoe crabs exist worldwide; however, Limulus polyphemus is the only species found in the United ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, even in ecosystems where Gemma gemma was the most numerically dominant macroinvertebrate, it was largely avoided and virtually excluded from the diet of horseshoe crabs (Botton, 1984). Also, because there is a size inequality between male and female horseshoe crabs, it is thought that the diets of male and female crabs may differ. Females are much larger than males, which could enable the females to feed on larger prey. Females also dig deeper into the substrate than males, which could give them access to fauna that is unavailable to males (Botton, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Taking a Look at Horseshoe Crabs Horseshoe crabs are considered "living fossils" or evolutionary survivors because the external appearance barely changed in over 150 million years. The horseshoe crab is part of the arthropods, which include organisms such as spiders and scorpions. The horseshoe crab is made up of the prosoma, which is the head, opisthosoma, which represents the central part of the body and the telson, which is the tail. The tail is harmless and is only used to help the crab flip itself over if it's turned over on the wrong side. Horseshoe crabs have been researched numerous times. Findings include their, ancestry, survival, morphological changes (if any) and phylogenetic research among the different variations of horseshoe crabs. Studies have found information on ancestral species of current horseshoe crabs. Xiphosurids, which are very old fossils that were not easily found; however, they were compared in body structure of current time horseshoe crabs and showed that there was hardly any change in the body structure. The body plan of a xiphosurid is described as having large crescent like shield in the anterior portion of its body resembling an invertibrate with lateral compound eyes. Xiphosurids are also classified as having opisthosomal tergites built into a thoracetron and having a long styliform telson (Rudkin et al. 2008). Ancestry of xiphosurid has so far been researched as a group of rare Middle–Late Palaeozoic fossil arthropods, which are in the group of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Theme Of Nature In The Pearl Steinbeck After I read "The Pearl", I learned that once our enemy has become nature itself, our animal instincts take over. After Kino's house burned down and his canoe destroyed, Steinbeck quotes, "He was an animal now, for hiding, for attacking, and he lived only to preserve himself and his family." (Steinbeck, 64). I used to think that we humans would be able to maintain our sanity through any situation. However, Kino taught me that we all become animals when nature becomes our enemy such as the time when he left the town: "The wind blew fierce and strong, and it pelted them with bits of sticks, sand, and little rocks." (Steinbeck, 69). From this, we're shown that once they've left their home, their "paradise", nature becomes their enemy, and it haunts them in every corner. During this period, Kino becomes more animal–like such as his response to when he and Juana saw the pool of water: "They came utterly weary to the pool, and Juana slumped to her knees...Kino drank long and thirstily at the pool." (Steinbeck, 80). One aspect I like about the story is how nature had protected Kino, his family and the villagers. Steinbeck states, "The beach was yellow sand, but at the water's edge a rubble of shell and algae took its place. Fiddler crabs bubbled and sputtered in their holes in the sand, and in the shallows little lobsters popped in and out of their tiny homes in the rubble and sand. The sea bottom was rich with crawling and swimming and growing things. The brown algae waved in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Maryland Blue Crab ( Callinectes Sapidus ) Organism Profile SCIN 130 Species Profile of the Maryland Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus) Roberto Garcia American Public University System Abstract The Callinectes sapidus also known commonly as the Maryland Blue Crab, is a crustacean found in the Chesapeake Bay. The blue crab is found in aquatic environments, most often in estuaries. It characterized by it's blue claws. The blue crabs undergo a life cycle of: zoeae, megalop, juvenile, and adulthood. The blue crab's hard shells serve as a protective barrier for external dangers. The Callinectes sapidus comes from the order of Decapods, whereby it's carapace has now evolved to be better suited for swimming. Of interest is the blue crab's mating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It shares ancestral background with shrimp and lobsters. They are omnivores with their prey being mussels, fish, plants, and smaller blue crabs (Society). Although the Blue Crab is well established within its ecosystem it is highly sensitive to environmental and habitat changes ("Blue Crab, Maryland State Crustacean", 2016). The detrimental conditions of the Chesapeake Bay have affected the populations of Blue Crabs along with over harvesting. Life Cycle The life cycle of a Blue Crab involves Zoeae, Megalops, Juveniles, and Adulthood (Zinski, 2006) ("Blue Crab Life Cycle, 2016). Mating occurs only once for female crabs. Female crabs undergo a pubertal mold which is indicative of a sexually mature state in their life cycle. During the pubertal molt females release pheromones which attract males. The actual ritual of mating does not occur until females molt their shells (Zinski, 2006). At which point females will then retreat to high salinity water to begin spawning. Spawning will occur for the first time 2–9 months after mating. Interestingly, males will protect females during the period which females have molted and it is at this point in which mating occurs (Hill, 2004). As previously mentioned Blue Crabs are highly susceptible to changes in environmental conditions. As an example, larvae require high salinity waters. Larvae require salinity of at least 20 ppt and below that threshold, there is poor likelihood of survival ability. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Advertising Campaign Of 'Union Is Strength' "United" Recently, there have been issues of gender, race, ethnicity, police brutality, and more throughout the United States. Countless stories can be heard of white cops shooting black men, professional football players kneeling for the National Anthem, and people being pushed to the brink of suicide for being made fun of for being "different." As a nation, the people are divided. Everyone is in their own little group. Black men tend to hang out with black men. White men tend to hang out with other white men. United. It's in the name of this country. United we stand, divided we fall. In the advertisement campaign for "Union Is Strength," (Link 1) there are many examples that symbolize why it is better to be united rather than divided and why this series of advertisements is considered so influential due to it's inspiring message and endless number of interpretations and uses. The future of this country really depends on people sticking together. There is even a campaign of advertisements dedicated to this. There are three advertisements under the name, "Union is Strength" that depict this. Each commercial is thirty seconds long and is trying to reach the same conclusion. The first commercial in the campaign shows a group of crabs walking on the sand. A seagull is seen flying overhead. The seagull singles out a crab and dives down to eat Wilson 2 it. • 17. Red King Crabs Stomach Analysis Red king crabs were collected for stomach analysis and abundance estimates by using a specially designed beam trawl, previously used in surveys for stock assessment by the Institute of Marine Research (IMR). The crab trawl is 6 m wide, 1 m high, and is equipped with a 135 mm mesh size polyethylene net (Sundet & Berenboim 2008). The hauling speed was approximately 1.65 kn. When swimming just for fun, humans can participate in activities such as swimming in the ocean, swimming at local pools, swimming in lakes, and even swimming in rivers. The only problem that humans have when it comes to being in the water is that it is physically impossible for someone to stay underwater for an extended period of time. Most humans who are in good health are only able to hold their breaths for about two minutes. The exception to this time is those who breathe pure oxygen prior to attempting to hold their breath. After breathing pure oxygen for about thirty minutes. Ricardo Bahia from Brazil held his breath for twenty minutes and twenty–one seconds. While this is an amazing feat, most humans are unfortunately unable to achieve this record. It is for this reason that humans invented special gear to help make breathing underwater easier and safer. With this special gear humans are able to spend longer times underwater without the danger of drowning. • 21. Horseshoe Crab Essay The horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus The horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus is known as a marine chelicerate arthropod. It's from the Limulidae family and more commonly found along the northern Atlantic coast of North America. The horseshoe crab makes use of different habits depending on it's current stage of development. They lay there eggs on the coastal beaches during the late spring and summer. Once the eggs hatch, the young horseshoe crabs are found offshore, within sandy areas of tidal flats. Adult horseshoe crabs are found in deeper parts of the ocean waters (National Wildlife Federation). The horseshoe crab is more related to arachnids, which is a group related to spiders and scorpions, rather than crustaceans, which are more related to crabs, shrimps and lobsters (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission). The lifespan of a horseshoe crab is up to 20–40 years in the wild. There structure has not changed much for the past 445 million years. One hypothesis is that the hard exoskeleton of horseshoe crab allows them to survive predators and as a result they have been to live through many decades. Making use of this platform could help Phillips to build its reputation and promote its products at the same time. Blue crabs play a large economic role in Maryland as they bring in money for the state, whether it be from people going crabbing or eating crabs. With all the benefits of blue crabs in Maryland, the government has taken a stand to ensure a large blue crab population in the future. The blue crab population in the Chesapeake Bay was considered to be a surplus from the 1950s to around the 2000s as well as in the Bay's tributaries (Stagg & Whilden, 1997). The blue crabs in Maryland live for about three years (Stagg & Whilden, 1997). This is part of the reason that it's so important that a high level of blue crabs is maintained so that they'll be able to produce offspring future generations. Horseshoe crabs have "rounded cephalic shields, that were like the extinct trilobites, and an arrangement of legs and gills", no wonder people think they are living fossils. This is the beginning to how these historic animals have evolved. Three years ago, the author took a trip to Delaware. As his family was walking on the beach they came across some horseshoe crabs mating. He wondered how they have changed. The type of horseshoe crab he saw along the beach was called "limulus polyphemus". Limulus Polyphemus is not found in the fossil records. The environment in the ancient sea, which contained crustaceans, molluscs, and echinoderms, helped the hypothesis that 112 million years ago the area was covered in shallow lagoons. Numerous Cretaceous dinosaur tracks have been found near Glen Rose, Texas. This is where horseshoe crabs were found in Paluxy River. There was also a surprising discovery. The fossil of the horseshoe crab is preserved as an exterior and interior mold. The fossil preserved traces of activity by other organisms. The interior mold shows traces left by small invertebrates, that fed on the horseshoe crab after it died. These worms created the mold of the fossil, and the detail was so detailed that the artificial caset was almost an exact replica. This was very surprising and awesome because this shows how invertebrates can preserve other animals anatomies. The European green crabs invade these eel grass beds when they are searching for prey in the matter that has settled at the bottom of the water or excavating to make burrows, this is done by cutting the roots of the eelgrass, which destroys this ecological habitat. European green crabs have preyed on various marine life such as species of mollusks, crustaceans and fish. The primary species that European green crabs prey upon being shellfish. Shellfish (oyster, clam and scallops) being their primary source of nutrition (GOV, 2016) is an issue because they then create competition for food amongst other species such as lobster and crabs which are native to the habitat the European green crab has invaded. Their secondary source of nutrition comes from crustaceans such as crab, crayfish, lobster, prawns or shrimp. Additionally, Studies have shown that European green crabs will prey upon Dungeness crabs of equal or lesser size (Peters et al. 2004). This means that European green crabs are capable of displacing other crabs in the competition for space, food and habitat. During the 3D seismic survey, tools, labour and machineries were used inside the mangrove forests. Major sources of faunal impacts observed during the seismic survey operations were from, 1) Physical presence and movement of the labour and machinery within the forest and 2) Noise and vibration generated from shooting (underground explosions). There are four major steps involved in the seismic surveys, that result in disturbances to the system such as initial survey of the area, laying of cables and geophones, shot hole drilling, and seismic wave generation through underground explosion (underground explosion). • 53. Diversity and Abundance of Scavenger Species in Seagrass Beds Diversity and abundance of scavenger species in seagrass beds in comparison to intertidal flat zonations in estuarine environments. Introduction Scavenger species that live in estuarine environments, are organisms that niche in the trophic structure just before detritivores. The energy and nutrients broken down, is then passed back into the ecosystem, where the detritivores further complete the breakdown process of organic matter. They are opportunists when it comes to their diet, scrounging for any organic material to eat, which can place immense pressure on the organism to survive, if essential resources are deficient. Scavengers are herbivoric and carnivorous, allowing them to nourish on any organic matter available to them, whether they be dead or living. (Nielsena & A.Gosselina, 2011). Intertidal (mud) flats are shielded intertidal and shallow sub tidal areas (Quinn, 2014), with significant ecosystems that provide a diversity of highly productive, environmental habitats that are essential sources of food for fish during times of high tide, and for birds in low tide. The sediment composition of intertidal flats depends on the "interactions between the physical, chemical and biological processes" (Widdows, et al., 2004), but the sediment if mainly fine particles and mostly muds. Four of the parameters had the same units (HCO3–, DIC, alkalinity, and CO32–), a good visual way to show the difference between them would be to plot these four parameters on a scatter graph. They used mostly bar graphs to visualize data, this is very repetitive and I think a more diverse group of graphs should have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He planned to continue the magazine strategy used in phase I, but Cherry Stockworth, vice–president of marketing of Phillips Foods, recommended him to use the budget to support half of cost of International Boston Seafood Show. According to the information given in this case, I don't think this is an either–or choice, and my recommendation for Ron Birch is to decrease the cost of ads in trade magazines, change the content of ads in magazines before and after the IBSS, and support the IBSS in March SWOT Analysis of King Crab of Phillips related to Trade Show Before analyzing the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Opportunity: U.S. seafood market grew rapidly in recent years, and the biggest part of seafood sales is fresh seafood, which is 54% of all seafood retail sales. The king crab of Phillips belongs to fresh seafood, which means it has huge market potential. Customers tend to buy food that is easy–cooked and fresh, which is a feature of the king crab product. The IBSS is a nation–wide trade show which could attract a lot of exhibitors and attendance. Making use of this platform could help Phillips to build its reputation and promote its products at the same time. Threat: Just because the IBSS could attract a large amount of exhibitors, the competition during the trade show is fierce. Though there are so many potential customers would appear at the trade show, how could Phillips beat the competitors and attracts enough customers to its booth. Another threat for king crab is the possible rejection of the retailers because they would feel risky to replace an old product with a new product. Pros and Cons of Alternative Strategies Trade advertising strategy Pros: Trade magazine is one of the most important sources for decision–makers and they will spend relatively long time in reading magazines. This strategy would cost less than trade show strategy and would reach broader potential customers. Cons: Effectiveness for brand building and lead generation of ads on magazines are 50.2% and 47.4%, lower than effectiveness of trade show, which are 60.9% ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Characteristics Of The Horseshoe Crab Introduction: "Limulus polyphemus, the horseshoe crab, inhabits shallow–brackish marine environments ranging from the Atlantic Ocean along the North American coastline to the Gulf coasts of the United states and from the East coast of Mexico to the Yucatan Peninsula" (Walls, Elizabeth). There are three other species of the horseshoe crab worldwide: Tachypleus tridentatus, Tachypleus gigas, and Carconoscorpinus rotundicauda that closely resemble Limulus in structure and habits, ranging from the Indian ocean to the Pacific Ocean along the coasts of Asia (National Wildlife Federation). "The horseshoe crab is known to be one of the "oldest living fossils"; which means that this organism's morphology has essentially not changed from fossils found from earlier geologic times, around 250 million years ago" (Noel Chartier). Based on the fact that the morphology has not changed in so long it can be assumed that the horseshoe crab has not had to adapt to changing environments and has been able to withstand a changing environment. "Due to the statement regarding the "oldest living fossils," one can hypothesize that fossil records will show evidence that fossils of extinct creatures look nearly identical to the creatures that are still living today" (Noel Chartier). If a person searched for horseshoe crabs in a shallow–brackish marine environment and found a living horseshoe crab and compared it to a fossil record of one, they would look almost identical to each other. • 61. Horseshoe Crabs For years, directors have made several movies insinuating what life would be like if dinosaurs were living on Earth today, such as what dinosaurs would look like and how they would act. Archeologists, paleontologists, and other researchers have proven the existence of dinosaurs. Fossil, preserved remains, evidence dates back to over 200 million years ago ("Dinosaur"). Each fossil, or remains, gives identifying information about the creature that once lived. Experts have revealed dinosaurs to be in the reptile category. Nevertheless, not all reptiles are dinosaurs. However, aquatic, land, and air life in the Paleozoic, Mesozoic eras in which dinosaurs lived and the Cenozoic era, also known as the present time, animals share many similarities. ... A familiar animal, the Crocodilians also referred to as crocodiles first arrived during the Triassic period along with turtles. The most common period throughout the Mesozoic era is the Jurassic. The Jurassic period is known for movies such as Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, but it is where reptiles began to dominate the world until the Cretaceous period. Crocodiles are closely related to birds. The Archaeopteryx, one of the first birds, contained similar characteristics of nonavian dinosaurs such as teeth, feathers, an extended vertebral column to form a long tail, and a big brain ("Dinosaurs"). During the Cretaceous period, vegetation flourished, large reptiles, dinosaurs, began extinction, and accurate birds, seen today, thrived. • 63. Depending on Horseshoe Crabs and Bait for Nutrition Recently, various user groups have relied on horseshoe crabs for bait and nutrition. While concerns have arisen that the horseshoe crab populations are declining, management of the American species of horseshoe crabs has been surrounded by controversy (Davis et al., 2006). Historically, horseshoe crabs have been considered a "trash–fish", not worthy of resources to establish their population data. As a result, reporting regulations and harvest restrictions associated with this fishery have been lacking (Baker et al., 2004). Catch records for the Limulus commercial fishery in the Delaware Bay declined from 4 million horseshoe crabs per year to less than 100,000 between the 1870s and the 1960s (Shuster and Botton, 1985). It wasn't until the second half of the 20th century that a commercial fishery on horseshoe crabs developed to provide bait for use in catching eel (Anguilla rostrada) and whelk (Busycon spp.) (Ferrari and Targett, 2003). The horseshoe crab commercial fishery has increased dramatically beginning in 1990 (Berkson and Shuster, 1999). A variety of methods are employed by fishermen to capture horseshoe crabs: trawls, dredges, hands, and gillnets (Berkson and Shuster, 1999). Entire beaches covered in horseshoe crabs can easily be harvested by hand since these animals have essentially no defense mechanism (Berkson and Shuster, 1999). Overall, one million Limulus were landed on the Atlantic coastline between 1989 and 1992. This number grew to over two million by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Mau In Nation Nation is a novel by Terry Pratchett. Set on the Nation, a tropical island in the Great Southern Pelagic Ocean, a substitute for the South Pacific, the book details the events that follow a tsunami that causes widespread devastation across the Great Southern Pelagic. Mau, the protagonist, is a member of the community that inhabits the Nation. At the beginning of the novel, Mau is returning from a coming of age ritual on the nearby Boys' Island, and survives the tidal wave whilst at sea. He returns to the Nation to find that everybody on the island had been killed by the natural disaster. This is a significant adversity that Mau faces throughout the novel and it forces him to become a capable leader, profoundly influences his identity, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is a traditional belief of the Nation that "[y]ou left your boy soul [on the Boy's Island] and got given a man soul when you got back to the Nation" (14). When departing from the Boys' Island to return to the Nation, Mau remarks that "[h]e'd be like mihei gawi, the little blue hermit crab, scuttling from his shell to a new one once a year, easy prey for any passing squid" (16). Shortly after the wave, Mau again identifies as a blue hermit crab, remarking that "he [has] no soul [because he did not undergo the ceremonies that would grant one a man soul]. His boy soul had vanished with the island, and he'd never get a man soul now. He [is] the blue hermit crab, hurrying from one shell to another, and the big shell he had thought he could see had been taken away" (107). At this time, he views his situation negatively. However, he later embraces this identity. He declares that "[he is] the little blue hermit crab ... [a]nd [he is] running. But [he will] not be trapped in a shell again, because ... any shell will be too small. [He wants] to know why" (174–5). In this quote, he uses "any shell" as a metaphor for the narrow religious doctrine held by Ataba and the Grandfathers, and expresses his desire for knowledge. As a consequence of the adversity associated with the tidal wave, Mau compares himself to a little blue hermit crab, scuttling between souls. As the novel progresses, Mau accepts and adopts this ... • 67. Blue Crab Research Paper The blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, is one of the most familiar inhabitants of marshes and waterways along the Atlantic and GMx coasts of North America. The abundance of blue crab larvae and juveniles make them important components of the diets of numerous species of fish, invertebrate and avian predators (Van Engel 1987, Guillory and Elliot 2001). As juveniles and adults, blue crabs act as generalist predators on benthic infauna and epifauna; consuming invertebrates, fish, and crustaceans (including other blue crabs) as well as plant and detrital materials (Darnell 1958, Alexander 1986, Meise and Stehlik 2003, Lipcius et al. 2007). Invasive species pose a threat on the economy and can harm the ecosystem they invade. • 75. The Chesapeake Bay is one of the largest and most useful... The Chesapeake Bay is one of the largest and most useful renewable resources not only in the United States, but in the world. The Chesapeake can be replenished naturally and has been used for hundreds of years. There are many use and non–use values of the Chesapeake. Use value implies that attributes of nature are being utilized in some sense. In the case of the Chesapeake this can refer to the crabbing, fishing, ecotourism and scenic values of the bay. Ecotourism is when people visit a natural or environmental resource to engage in outdoor recreation of some sort. Non–use values are values expressed by humans simply for the existence of natural resources. Two more specific non– use values to the Chesapeake would be option value and ... This rent dissipation occurs because of excess entry and effort levels of the Chesapeake. The Maryland Blue Crab, which is the most iconic creature of the Chesapeake, has decreased in population from 276 million in 1990 to 131 million in 2008. This dramatic decrease has caused a cumulative loss to both Maryland and Virginia of 640 million dollars. In an attempt to restore the blue crab population, Maryland and Virginia instituted a public policy to place restrictions on the crabbing of the Chesapeake. This is an example of a command and control policy because public authorities established direct controls on individual actions. This created harsh economic hardships for many crabbers, causing the Secretary of Commerce to decide that the blue crab fishery had undergone a commercial failure as it is defined under the Magnuson–Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. The Magnuson–Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act is the primary authority for fishery management in the United States and it created regional fishery management councils that attempt to establish limits on total catches and regulations. • 77. An Alien On Earth And Hunted Humans Question One: If an alien race landed on Earth and hunted humans, we would need many different protection methods. The five methods I think would benefit humans the most in an alien invasion would be: venom, speed, webbed feet, strong claws, and strong jaws. Venom would be very important for my protection because I would rather kill the aliens, instead of avoiding them. In order to inject venom into the aliens, humans would need to have sharper teeth. I would sneak up on an alien and bite them. This could immobilize the alien once the venom affects them. Two animals that utilize venom are spiders and snakes. Speed would be another important protection method because if a group of aliens were chasing you, they would not be able to keep up with your incredible speed. If you were traveling in a large group, you could all go separate directions and confuse the aliens. They would not be able to keep track of everyone or even be able to catch up to any human. This would also include the speed of climbing things, such as trees and mountains. Two animals that utilize this method of protection are the cobra and the rattlesnake. Webbed feet would also be an important protection method for humans if they were being hunted by aliens. Webbed feet are helpful for swimming and would allow humans to swim quickly away from the predators. Webbed feet would make our feet look a lot different than they do now. We would walk differently with webbed feet, but would swim very fast. I am a slow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
