greatest urban narratives of his time. In his rap "The Message Pt. 2" Flash described the daily occurrences and harsh realities of his ghetto life in
vivid detail. Now 45 years later in the midst of black lives matter, at a place in America where black lives must be affirmed through hashtags and
protest, many are upset that the American art people have come to rely on, to tell the stories and narrate the experiences of being poor and black,
only exist to valorize the crime, money, drugs and sex that come from being poor. Trap Music is a sub–genre of southern rap born in the South. Music

Both were looked down upon. Many Americans disapproved of the lifestyle they chose to live. Both also rejected authority and the status quo. Hippies
felt their best chance at changing society was to drop out of school and the world around them while beats felt traveling around the country would help
them defeat the horrors of society. They were both non–materialistic and non–conformists and believed in freedom of expression. Beats showed their
expression through literature and art. Both experimented with different drugs and started the drug epidemic which hit in the late 1960s. Allen Ginsburg

change in quickly, the Beat Generation and Hippie Generation dressed differently. The Beat Generation looked more grungy with scruffy chins and
mustaches and worn out clothing, while the Hippies wore bright vibrant colors with peace symbols and had long beards. Music also fluctuates so

Gail Hilson Woldu. For instance, in his book Woldu discusses the academic characteristic of hip hop studies (Woldu, 10). The author gives several
examples of major works that have come from academic writing. He also goes into great detail about what they each focus on. For example, Woldu
mentions Black Noise from author Tricia Rose as being a book that falls into the academic characteristic of hip hop studies (Woldu, 13). Woldu states,

Finally, the last major characteristic of hip hop studies that Woldu discusses is what he calls "the devotees" (Woldu, 30). Woldu states, "All are clearly
more than "devotees" in the sense that they are far more than fans or hip–hop groupies" (Would, 30). Examples that he provides are, for instance, Bill
Adler (Woldu, 30). Woldu states, "Bill Adler, a former rap publicist...wrote a biography of rappers Run
–DMC" (woldu, 31). Another example is Nelson
George. According to Woldu, "the recipient of two ASCAP
–Deems Taylor Awards and an American Book Award, George is the author of eight
nonfiction books on African American culture..." (Woldu, 31). Again, these examples go to show that this is a major characteristic of hip hop studies.
Aside from simply looking at the major characteristics, one can also examine the ways in which they have evolved. For instance, one can dive into
the evolution of the academic characteristic. One major way in which these characteristics have evolved is simply by the topics they cover. When
looking at what was commonly talked about back in the early days of hip hop, and then compare it to the topics discussed today one will notice a
