2. INTRODUCTION
• A mechanism is a mechanical device
that transfers device that transfers
motion and /or from a source to a
output .
• A linkage consists of links generally
considered rigid which are connected
by joints such as pins or sliders
3. What is a cam?
• Best described as on odd shapped
wheel
• Used to convert rotary motion into
linear motion
• As the cam rotates then the follower
follows the shape[ profile] of the
cam
• Different shaped cams will cause the
follower to move up and down in a
different way
4. What is the
follower?
• follower is a rotating or an
oscillating element of a machine
that follows the motion of cam by
direct contact.
• If a cam moves in reciprocating
motion the follower moves in
vertically respect to the axis of the
cam.
• This part of the machine is mainly
following the cam which can be
reciprocating or oscillating in
motion. It converts the rotary
motion of cam into reciprocating or
oscillating motion.
5. What is the use
of cam and
follower?
• A cam and follower mechanism is a
profiled shape mounted on a shaft that
causes a lever or follower to
move. cams are used to convert rotary
to linear (reciprocating) motion. As the
cam rotates, the follower rises and
falls in a process known as
reciprocating motion.
6. What are the
three types of
CAM?
• Circular. Circular cams use an off-centre
pivot to cause the follower to move up
and down. ...
• Pear. Pear cams are called this as they
have the shape of a pear. ...
• Snail or drop. Snail or drop cams have
the appearance of a snail shell.
• Heart-shaped or constant velocity.
