A look at the cultures of Egypt, Greece, and the Roman Empire. *Note! Some of these images were not covered in class!*

The name of Athens, connected to the name of its patron goddess Athena, originates from an earlier Pre- Greek language. The etiological myth explaining how Athens acquired this name through the legendary contest between Poseidon and Athena was described by Herodotus, Apollodorus, Ovid, Plutarch, Pausanias and others. Plato, in his dialogue Cratylus, offers his own etymology of Athena's name connecting it to the phrase ἁ θεονόα or hē theoû nóēsis (ἡ θεοῦ νόησις, 'the mind of god')

The Treasure of Tutankhamun is the greatest treasure ever found in anywhere in the world and possible of all times. In the year 1922 Howard Carter astonished the world by the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun and the rich treasure which it contained. Tutankhamun, in spite of the almost incredible wealth of material objects discovered in his tomb, was still relatively unknown to the world. He was on the throne for 9 years. Tutankhamun reversed many of his father’s Akhenaten unpopular policies. People were allowed to worship the oid gods again and damaged temples were re[aired He moved the Egyptian capital back to Thebes.

Summary After thousands of years, so many of us still search for the answer to the mystery of Atlantis. From time to time, archaeologists and historians locate evidence. There have been many locations proposed for the location of Atlantis. Ever since the first recorded history of Atlantis, written by the Greek philosopher Plato over 2,300 years ago, debate has raged as to whether or not Atlantis ever really existed. The existence of Atlantis is supported by the fact that it is described in great details by Plato. In additions, various conditions, events and goods unknown to Plato are also described in detailed and lengthy words. The recent knowledge of late glacial and postglacial sea level rise and land subsidence that occurred almost precisely at the time described by Plato also becomes strong evidence to the truth of the story. Plato describes the Atlantis from point of views of geography, climate, plain layout, city layout, river and channel hydraulics, produces, social structure, customs, mythology and its destruction in details including their dimensions and orientations. These become the subjects of the author to hypothesize that the lost city of Atlantis is in Java Sea, as written in a book “Atlantis: The lost city is in Java Sea”, published in April 2015. The works include over 5-year research and analysis of textbooks, papers, internet sites and digital data collected by the author as well as some site observations. The author has made a serious effort to match Plato’s narrative with his chosen location for Atlantis, namely off the southern coast of the island of Kalimantan in the Java Sea. He also uses his professional expertise to analyse Plato’s many references to the waterways of the Atlantis capital and its extensive plain. He commendably draws attention to the remarkable water transportation and irrigation system in Central Kalimantan. He also includes a number of maps used to support his views. He found a lot more detailed evidence, summarized in a 60-bullet checklist of agreements between Plato’s Atlantis and Sundaland/Java Sea localization, as proofs that his theory is the most complete and accurate until today.

For as long as I can remember I have been interested in the myth of the lost continent Atlantis, which Plato wrote about. Atlantis was an extensive insular continent that sunk into the sea and disappeared without a trace. Its inhabitants had developed an exceptionally high standard of civilisation. Where it was located we probably never will know for sure but many serious investigators think that it might very well be the former Santorini. For many years I also dreamt about visiting Santorini and two years ago my dream came true. The history of this island really intrigued me and its beauty and grandeur are unparalleled. Awe mixed with fear is what I felt when I stood on top of a huge cliff and looked down at the volcano and the caldera. I was standing on historical ground and I got a strong feeling that here I had found the lost Atlantis!

King Nebkheperura Tutankhamun (king tut for short)is one of the most famous pharaohs ever to reign. He actually didn’t get too much accomplished in his ten years as pharaoh. The reason king Tut is so famous is because of his tomb discovered by Howard carter and Lord Carnarvon in November 1922. His tomb was found in good condition which interested historians and the media. King Tut is a very well known pharaoh till now.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
