  2. 2. myth OR reality ?? <ul><li>The city was said to be imaginary , fictional and not real. </li></ul><ul><li>It is said to be a myth, an illusion and thought. </li></ul>

PLATO’S THEORY ON ATLANTIS <ul><li>Around 350 BC, Plato was the first to write about this magical island. </li></ul><ul><li>In Plato's account Atlantis was a naval power lying “in front of the Pillars of Hercules” that conquered many parts of Western Europe and Africa 9,000 years before Solon or about 9600 BC. </li></ul><ul><li>After a failed attempt to invade Athens ,Atlantis sank into the ocean “ in a single day and night of misfortune”. </li></ul>

THE LOCATION <ul><li>According to Plato, the island of Atlantis was the top of an under water volcano and shaped like a doughnut and that is where the king built his temple. </li></ul><ul><li>Later when the volcano erupted the island was destroyed but the continent remained intact. </li></ul>

WHERE IS ATLANTIS ? <ul><li>Atlantis (the continent) was originally located in the Atlantic Ocean and the Island of Atlantis was located just of the south coast. </li></ul><ul><li>The legend of Atlantis, a lost island, that is said to have sunk beneath the sea sometime during the Pleistocene Ice Age.   </li></ul>

DISAPPERANCE <ul><li>The disappearance of the lost city of Atlantis has remained a popular legend since 360 B.C., when Plato first wrote about it. </li></ul><ul><li>Scientists still to this day do not know what sank the continent. But it now lies at the bottom of the South China Sea. </li></ul>

MYTH GIVES UP SECRETS <ul><li>A diver explores the sunken settlement beneath the waters off southern Greece.  </li></ul><ul><li>“ Atlantis was a myth but it is a myth that keeps underwater exploration going,&quot; said Sakellariou . </li></ul><ul><li>Less than 1% of the world's ocean floors have ever been surveyed. This is an extraordinary find but there is still a lot more down there that has to be found. </li></ul>
  8. 8. WHAT THEY FOUND ? <ul><li>The exploration revealed a world of buildings, courtyards, main streets, rock-cut tombs and religious structures. </li></ul><ul><li>In addition, the sea bed was replete with thousands of shards (broken pieces) of pottery. </li></ul>

GENUINE ATLANTIS <ul><li>The possible existence of “real” Atlantis was discussed throughout the classical ancient times especially before the middle ages. </li></ul><ul><li>Alan Cameron states : “It is only in modern times that people have taken Atlantis story seriously ; no one did so in antiquity”. </li></ul><ul><li>Atlantis inspired today’s literature ; from science fiction to comic books to movies. </li></ul>
