Bingen's Impact on Early Western Music Hildegard Von Bingen was an amazing woman who
impacted not only early western music, but also impacted early western civilization. Overcoming
gender boundaries of the time, she was looked at to advise major men of power. She was not only
known for her musical compositions, but she broke through in many fields making an impact in all
of them. Hildegard Von Bingen was born as the tenth child in her family. As the tenth child in early
western culture you were looked at as unable to be fed by the family, so Hildegard was dedicated to
the church. At the age of eight she was sent to an anchoress name Jutta to receive a religious
education. Hildegard felt that she had a lack of education. She learned to read Psalter in Latin. She

She described music as "capturing the original joy and beauty of paradise". She believed that music
and musical instruments were invented to appropriately worship and honor god. It is believed that
her music sounds like the singing of angels. Hildegard was known for having migraines, and it is
believed that her visions were a result from the issue. In her writings she described her visions, and
the symptoms pointed to the same symptoms that result in migraines. With all of her issues with this
condition, she still managed to turn it into great works of music, and a respect that many women
would have not earned in the time period. Hildegard works are still around today do to the fact that
she was one of the first people to have her works recorded. She is truly one of the most important
people of her time period. Her ability to turn her visions into works of art for the church, and for
science, transcended the world into a new era. Hildegard Von Bingen will be remembered forever, as

Women 's Life Of Christianity
The women in the history involved in the church played a variety of roles in their life of
Christianity. During early Christianity, they were mostly health care givers, teachers, and
missionaries. Until recent times, women were mostly excluded from higher church positions such as
episcopal and clerical jobs within the churches. However a good number of women have been
influential in the life of the church – from contemporaries of Jesus, to subsequent saints,
theologians, doctors of the church, missionaries, abbesses, nuns, mystics, founders of religious
institutes, military leaders, monarchs and martyrs.
Christianity from the start placed men in positions of authority in marriage, government,
community, family, and pretty much anything. The religion only allowed membership of priests to
males only. There was a wide following amount of women with an enhanced social status, while
they believed and practiced Christianity, they were only allowed to follow the men. Later centuries,
as religious groups of women and nuns flourished, women came to play an important role in
Christianity through convents and abbeys and have continued through history to be active. They
mostly participated in schools, hospitals, nursing homes and monastic settlements. A lot has changed
in recent decades, with the ordination of women in some churches have become pretty popular.
Focusing on the early century of Christianity, played a huge role in re–defining a women's
credibility within the Christian

The Iron-Colored Mountain And The One True Light
Both "The Iron–Colored Mountain and the Radiant One" and "The One True Light" illustrate
religion in the world and how no one really knows exactly who or what the Light is. In the passage
written by Hildegard of Bingen, she writes about seeing the One, being so bright that it blinds her
vision. It's the Light that is her God and the mountain of eyes The One sits atop of to me represents
all the different religions in the world. In "The One True Light" by Rumi, the parts of the elephant
represents the same. The people feel different sections of the elephant and each of them believe that
it's something different. If the light was there, they'd see what it truly is but they don't. They all
believe different parts of the elephant but in the end

Reinhard Heydrich Research Paper
Reinhard Heydrich known as"The Blond Beast" or "Hangman Heydrich" was born in the German
city of Halle, near Leipzig on March 7,1904 he was the second of three children .When Heydrich
was six months old he suffered an inflammation of the brain that could've killed him, as well as a
few other illnesses that were life threatening. In order to overcome this, his father motivated him to
take up as many sports as possible such as running, horse–riding, football, swimming, and fencing.
Heydrich was raised in a musical background. He had a strong love for the violin. So Heydrich did
what any enthusiast would do, he trained seriously and eventually developed an expert skill for it, as
well as a life–long passion for the violin. His parents were music Aficionados and because of their
love for music, Heydrich's father, Bruno Richard ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Bruno, real name as Süss' "(Simkin). Eventually it was found out that Reinhard's father's real last
name was Süss and even though Heydrich was not Jewish, Süss was a common German–Jewish last
name at the time. It was then implied that Heydrich's father was Jewish. He was targeted for school
bullying due to his high–pitched voice, his devotion to Catholicism, and the suspicion that he was of
Jewish ancestry. He was usually pummeled by the larger boys but the main idea that got to him was
the fact that he was made fun of because they thought he was Jewish. Heydrich was plagued with
racial anti–semitic slurs because of the rumors of jewish ancestry in his family. Even though his
father denied being Jewish, Heydrich wondered if his father was of Jewish ancestry and because of
this he became confused and

Dr. Fassler's lecture on Hildegard was absolutely fascinating to me. I had never heard of the Cosmic
Egg, so I was obviously perplexed by the entire idea of it as well as the link between cosmology,
faith, and art.
Hildegard of Bingen brings science, theology, art, and music together in a digital display. Her way
of thinking about everything not as flat, but as dome–ified, revolutionized many aspects of faith and
education. Dr. Fassler's team is working on Hildegard's thought of taking a flat image, and turning it
into a movable, 3–D image. Dr. Fassler also transcribed some of Hildegard's music and had vocal
graduate students at Notre Dame sing through the pieces. Hildegard said she heard music without
words, but put words in the pieces so ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The wind chart shows the four wind heads holding up the universe. Jesus and Mary are shown as the
new Adam and new Eve. In Dr. Fassler's work, Act l will show the construction of the egg, Act ll
will be a zoomable exploration of it, and the work will end with the egg destroyed and frozen
forever in the universe.
Dr. Fassler showed a tapestry from around 1100 in Spain. The piece showed the four winds, earth,
darkness, the spirit of God, water, and light. In addition, one of the winds was sitting on a bagpipe
sort of instrument with two horns in its mouth and feathers on its feet to resemble flight.
The creation of light is very important to Hildegard. She refers to angels as being made of pure,
living light. The darkness stands for the fallen angels. She shows nine ranks of angels in the tapestry.
There were originally ten, but Lucifer's order fell. Dr. Fassler pointed out the idea that God created
humankind to take the place where Lucifer fell. Mankind then fell, and we must regain our voices
and place through praise. Hildegard said that the universe did not spin until Adam fell with

Plainchant Compare And Contrast
The plainchants Viderunt Omnes by Anonymous and O viridissima virga by Hildegard of Bingen
are both compositions that were created during the Medieval Age, also known as the Middle Age.
The purpose of these pieces were to be served usually in Roman Catholic Churches as music of
worship. Although these two songs are known as plainchants, meaning they are usually monophonic
and the melody usually does not change, both pieces have many similarities and differences. In my
personal opinion, I believe that these two piece are more different than they are similar. For
example, Viderunt Omnes is polyphonic for a majority of its duration because it sounds to be sung
in unison by a choir and not by a singular person. O viridissima virga on the other

Middle Ages And Their Impact On Culture Essay
Influential Figures of the Middle Ages and Their Impact on Culture
The Middle Ages were a time of cultural development and lasting impacts that laid the groundwork
for the culture present in Western civilization today. Several influential figures contributed to the
cultural development in the Middle Ages. Hildegard of Bingen improved the status of women in her
day and through her, feminism continued to progress. Next, Thomas Aquinas created a philosophy
that left a lasting impression on the Catholic Church. Finally, Roger Bacon played a hand in several
scientific discoveries and created a system of natural knowledge that is still used today. All three left
a lasting mark on the Middle Ages in ways that have helped shape the culture of the Western world
today.
First, there was Hildegard of Bingen who played a crucial role in her day as an influential female in
an age where women were usually overlooked. Hildegard transcended the bans that restricted
women's social participation. As a visionary, she voiced her disapproval on simony and helped
reform the churches. Early feminists used Hildegard's success to argue for women's rights to attend
medical schools. In modern times, scholars used her in a new age movement for her holistic view of
healing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Inspired by Aristotle, he built his own philosophy which directed the world view of Christians to
change to a one that was lighter and happier than the previous. His beliefs were named Thomism
and the Catholic Church declared them as the church's official teaching in 1879. Thomism helped to
shape the current state of the Catholic Church in Western civilization today. Thomas Aquinas' views
brought forth a wave that intellectualized Europe. This declaration helped shape Catholism's current
state in the Western world today and also brought forth a wave that intellectualized

mainly focuses on the life of Hildegard as a spiritualist and a healer, as do most books that were
written about her. It begins by outlining the basic events of her life and death; her illness as a child,
her education at a convent by a woman named Jutta, and the visions she saw from an early age. She
regarded these visions as gifts from God but was reluctant to share them with the world until one
critical dream. "And it came to pass...when I was forty–two years and seven months old that the

people in high power were beginning to tire of a woman with so much control and influence over
the common people and were trying to silence her by censoring or even outright discrediting her.

is more closely rooted to the history of Hildegard than would be if it were a group of American

Hildegard 's Gender Is Of Course Not An Accident
Hildegard's gender is of course not an accident. Throughout history, we have claimed Hildegard as
the first Christian thinkers to deal seriously and positively with feminine issues, as well as the
challenges posed by and for women in a patriarchal society. She formulated her thoughts within the
traditional framework of christian symbols, through the great reflection on the great feminine
representations and essence of Eve, Mary, and Mother church. In our current struggles of spirituality
and gender, Hildegard can be a guide. Her visionary forms fade into one another, but within all of
them and behind them all, shines neither women nor man, but the living light. By using Hildegard of
Bingen as a central figure in 12th century religious practice, we can then use Chritianity as an
example to compare and contrast women's experiences in religious practice in the 12th century and
the 21st century. Hildegard was destined from an early age to live a life of enclosure in her cell.
Rather than choosing to enter their daughter formally as a child in a covenant where she would be
brought up to become a nun, Hildegard's parents locked her in a cell of anchoress. A daughter of a
local count, Jutta, undertook to instruct Hildegard in the recitation of the psalter and in other
womanly occupations, such as sewing, cooking, and cleaning. It was essential in the 12th century
that women were taught to perform these gendered duties so they could provide for their husbands

Hildegard Von Bingen
Music has been around for ages and still plays a critical role in everyone's life. During the Medieval
period, many turned to the arts and music to cope with the hardships of that time. The history of
music is best told by the styles that emerged and the composers who lived during the Medieval
period. One composer, by the name of Hildegard Von Bingen, changed the way people saw music
during this time. In this essay, I will analyze "O Virtus Sapientiae" by Hildegard Von Bingen.
When listening to Hildegard's piece, my temporary state of mind becomes more serene and spiritual
(Mood). The piece creates an atmosphere that helps me forget about my troubles and gives me hope.
Because the song sounds like something you would hear if you were to go to church to worship, it
makes me think of religion; Specifically being at church (Imagery). As I listened and closed my
eyes, I could picture myself sitting in church and looking at the light that passes through the stained
glass windows. Hildegard's piece reminds me of waking up on ... Show more content on

Melody relates to pitches that are in succession. We know this because there's a female vocalist who
is moving from one note to the next and only singing that note at a time. The Viola being played
only plays one note at a time and serves as a drone. A drone is a rudimentary version of Medieval
harmony which is a single, sustained pitch played or sung as accompaniment. The melodic style of
the song is Legato, or notes that are smooth and connected in style. At the timestamp 2:24 – 2:27,
the vocals are at the highest and loudest point of the melody, which is called a melodic climax. This
musical element helps draws attention to specific words in the text. Hildegard specifically
manipulated musical elements in order to bring emphasis to certain words in a text, an effect in
which she shows that music can heighten emotions and/or direct the listener's

Hildegard Von Bingen Vision
In the 2009 film, Vision: The Life of Hildegard von Bingen, the writer/director Margarethe von
Trotta puts focus on Hildegard's journey to serve the Lord as best she can, in a time where the
church is run by powerful men, and where the Roman Catholic Church is focused on centralizing
the church and government though the first crusades. Hildegard (Barbara Sukowa) changes the
history of the church by transcribing her visions into text and by breaking away from her cloister to
start her own monasteries. As a visionary, she sees God through a different lens and thinks of him
not to be feared, but to be celebrated. She believes his gifts will heal and guide, so long as one's
heart is pure and humble. Margarethe von Trotta does a great job of showing the audience that
Hildegard's view of God is not the same as the masses, some of which viewed God as a punisher
that should be feared. As the film opened, the audience was exposed to the apocalyptic thinking of
members of the church. The first scene of the movie shows a gathering of people in a place of
worship, waiting out the end of the world. This congregation is surprised to wake up to another day.
This was a common theme in earlier Christianity, and a view that later in the movie, we realize
Hildegard von Bingen didn't share. A similar scene in terms of how one viewed God, was that of
self–flagellation early on in the movie. With the self–harming of one's body for sacrifice to God, to
suffer as Jesus did, it gives the

Comparison Of Pessimism In 'Know The Ways Of The Lord'?
Medieval religious literature served to teach and instruct followers of the ways of religion,
specifically Christianity, through vivid imagery. Three texts that support this idea are Hildegard of
Bingen's "Know the Ways of the Lord", Pope Innocent III's "On the Misery of the Human
Condition," and "Everyman." Although these texts represent the same idea, there are two surprising
differences between them. The first being between "Know the Ways of the Lord" and "Everyman",
which shows the different interventions of God. The second surprising difference is the optimism of
"Know the Ways of the Lord" and the contrasting pessimism of "On the Misery of the Human
Condition." "Know the Ways of the Lord" and "Everyman" are two texts which both ... Show more

A surprising difference between these two texts is the tone and message. These two passages have
differing messages regarding life and death. During this time, texts usually instill the idea of fearing
God, which is contrary to the passage written by Hildegard of Bingen. "Know the Ways of the Lord"
gives an optimistic tone, unlike "On the Misery of the Human Condition" which displays more
pessimism. The optimism of Bingen's writing is displayed through the quote, "It happened in the
year 1141 of the Incarnation of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, when I was forty–two years and seven
months old, that a fiery light of the greatest radiance coming from the open heavens flooded through
my brain. It kindled my whole breast like a flame that does not scorch but warms in the same way
the sun warms anything on which it sheds its rays" (Know the Ways of the Lord lines 21–26). The
use of phrases such as "a flame that does not scorch but warms" show the use of a less god–fearing
tone and a greater closeness with God. On the other hand, Pope Innocent III writes, "In life, he
produced lice and tapeworms; in death, he will produce worms and flies. In life he produced dung
and vomit; in death, he produces rottenness and stench" (Innocent lines 28–30). Pope Innocent III
demonstrates the negative connotation of the death and decay of humans. Both texts convey similar
messages while using different descriptors, one which instills optimism from the

Liturgical Drama Ordo Virtutum by Hildegard of Bingen was fundamental in the creation and
development of later works, providing religious inspiration, unique and expressive composition, and
reflections of individual experiences in order to create the first liturgical drama of its kind. I. Ordo
Virtutum depicts an allegorical struggle between good and evil, setting a precedent for later
liturgical dramas. A. Hildegard of Bingen's Ordo Virtutum is considered the first of its kind,

2. The piece ends with a celebration of the virtues, a commemoration of the triumph of the righteous
over the influence of the devil. II. The unique composition of Ordo Virtutum is indicative of
Hildegard of Bingen's efforts to depict the drama as an expression of praise, glory, and
righteousness. A. The verse and tone of Ordo Virtutum contributes to the overarching theme of
holiness and righteousness within the piece. 1. Ordo Virtutum is written in Latin from the twelfth–
century that is praised its revolutionary nature and differentiation from all other sacred poetry during
this time. 2. Ordo Virtutum has a modal formulaic structure that works by an alternating solo and
choral response, which is considered to be distinct to Hildegard's compositions. B. Hildegard
utilizes techniques of singing and shouting to emphasize various characteristics in Ordo Virtutum. 1.
The Devil is not given any singing lines, rather, is directed to shout his lines. Given the idea that
music is the imitation of divine harmony, the Devil should take no part in music. 2. The Devil
intervenes within the scenes of light and purity by shouting his threats. By using such extreme
differences in vocal technique, the essential message of the morality play is shown here. C. The
conclusion of Ordo Virtutum consists of a period of praise and glory, demonstrating Hildegard of
Bingen's ideal vision of devotion to righteousness. 1. Half of the published score is dedicated to the

Composers like Amy Beach did counter this by generating very nice and serious music (Burkholder

compare with that of composers such as Brahmns. This music worked both unintentionally and
intentionally to assist the new America nation to seal its cultural identity separately from the
European countries. One great example of this kind of compositions is Beach's Gaelic Symphony,
the kind of musical elements which pay honor to the Scottish and Irish settlers who played great role
in the history of America (Monson & Marvin, 2013).

The Reflection Of Music
Music is one of the most important parts of human society. It is used as an emotional outlet and
allows people to express themselves. "Music is a reflection of self." Music is the relationship
between tones that normally on their own would not be too exciting, but once put together they
convey emotions, thoughts, and ideas. Music is meant to transport an individual to another world,
the composer's world. A composer will construct a story influenced by their own lives and their
society. An important part of the music is also the history behind it and how it has impacted people.
"Music is defined as a practical activity, and is an art form that has always invited theoretical
speculation and critical reflection." Music is everywhere and is in everyone's life but, not everyone
knows its early history and how it evolved into today's genres. Researching, studying and examining
early music and its evolution reveals how music has transformed from simple monophonic lines
with no real timing into large orchestral pieces. Early forms of music included one or two parts,
while orchestral pieces included multiple types of instruments, each independently playing different
parts. Musicology is the is the process study, inquiry and reflection of music, while it forms its own
context and employs distinct concepts, it's clearly dependant upon and reflective of music as its
subject." Musicological research has not been able to pinpoint what the music of primitive people or

Hildegard: Scotomas And Phosphenes: A Case Study
The Visions of Hildegard: Scotomas and Phosphenes
Oliver Sacks (2007) discussed a case study concerning Hildegard of Bingen, a nun who lived from
1098 to 1180 A.D. Hildegard experienced visual auras caused by scintillating scotomas which
inspired her to write the book Scivias documenting her visual experiences (Sacks, 2007). From these
illustrations and written descriptions, Sacks (2007) was able to theorize that Hildegard was actually
experiencing an array of scotomas and phosphenes. Sacks (2007) proposed that Hildegard's visions
were her interpretations of scintillating and central scotomas, occurring both individually and back–
to–back within the same migraine (Sacks, 2007). For instance, Sacks (2007) believed the bright
falling stars in one of her visions were the result of phosphenes, followed by a negative scotoma
which was a blindspot in her visual field. The vibrant colors within the illustrations were also
influenced by her scotomas (Sacks, 2007). This paper provides an understanding of what Hildegard
may have perceived with her scotomas and phosphenes through the use of two research articles.
First Article
In the first article, Knight, Mazzi and Savazzi (2015) made 3 hypotheses. The first hypothesis was
that the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) threshold would change when the background
changed from uniform to pattern (Knight et al., 2015). The second hypothesis was that the
likelihood of the participant sensing light versus dark percepts would change when global luminance
of the background changed (Knight et al., 2015). The third hypothesis was that the likelihood of
light versus dark percepts would stay the same at different TMS intensities (Knight et al., 2015). The
study had 16 participants who all wore corrective lens (Knight et al., 2015). To test the threshold of
phosophenes, a Method of Constant Stimuli (MOCS) was used (Knight et al., 2015). The
participants received 120 randomly administered trials with pulses from TMS under two different
background conditions (Knight et al., 2015). A paired t–test was used to analyze the difference in
stimulator intensity threshold for inducing percepts between background conditions (Knight et al.,
2015). A repeated–measures analysis of variance

Ordo Virtutum By Hildegard Von Bingen
Hildegard von Bingen's Ordo Virtutum was one of the most profound liturgical dramas ahead of its
time. It is the only musical dramas to survive that include the texts and music. The play was written
in Latin text, for entertainment purposes of Hildegard's community of noblewomen. This musical
play is a morality play with allegorical characters, which includes prophets, virtues, and an innocent
soul. The play is a symbolic interpretation between good and evil, a battle between the devil and
virtues for the innocent soul. The play uses sixteen virtues in order to fight off satan and guide the
soul into a righteous path into heaven.
Hildegard uses various musical techniques to distinguish the virtues, patriarchs, and the devil. The

Music: A Middle Ages
There were several genres of the A Middle Ages as well as the Renaissance. During the Renaissance
period, the vast majority of the musical moved from the church to the courts. Composers were more
open to experimentation, and had more imaginative opportunity and basically were no longer afraid
of the churches response. In this time frame the church had less control over musical movement and
this allowed the composers to go in their own direction with minimum consequences. In this time
frame the Kings, Princes and other prominent members of the courts had a greater amount of an
impact over the music, yet the church still attempted to keep the music pure and basically the same.
Thus more composers utilized musical instruments in their compositions. ... Show more content on

Renaissance is otherwise called rebirth this time changed the tone of music "it is the name given to a
complex current of thought that worked deep changes on Europe from the fourteenth to the sixteenth
century." (Kerman, 60) There was a shift towards a more secular society during the European
Renaissance and this is where you can see the dramatic changes to the musical style. The
Renaissance marks the door opening for the European society to change form the predominantly
religious mood to a more secular or common society and with this shift the church was pretty much
on hush hush the composers of this time had taken over. This awakening was called humanism.
Humanism was more of the use of reason or and observation. The humanists emphasized the
importance of human qualities rather than religious convictions therefore music played a vital role in
this change as well and it evolved right along with the times. In the Renaissance, one of the most
popular sacred genres that were written in Latin text was the Motet. One of the composers of the
Motet was Guillaume de Machaut, His motets stand out for their changing rhythms, longer lengths
and integration of sacred and secular texts. Another composer was Thomas Weelkes one example of
his music was Madrigal, "As Vesta Was from Latinos Hill Descending." When it came to the Motet,
the Motet had to a greater extent an assortment of words which permitted the composer to have
more of a religious message in the music, and as you read alongside the music you can see that a
portion of the words are right out of the book of Bible its self. Motets touched on certain issues such
as politics, love and the loss of love, valor chivalry, desire and fellowship all at the same time. "The
Mass took a more relaxed attitude toward medieval authority." (Kerman, 63) and is also a form of
scared music. One example of a Mass is "Ave Maris Stella" by Guillaume Duffy this more of

The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat And Other Clinical...
Oliver Sacks, the author of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales, was
a notable neurologist and author who just died in 2015. This book is a collection of some of Oliver
Sacks' most memorable cases and the book is divided into cases dealing with losses, excesses,
transports, and the world of the simple. The book starts with two epigraphs for a very specific
purpose. Neurology and the study of the brain in general, has according to Oliver Sacks, recently
taken a too scientific approach. Sacks argues that one must understand the whole person, his history,
personality, and relationships, in order to accurately diagnose, treat, and understand them.

Oliver Sacks has found that this approach is the only way to come to a logical diagnosis in a
patient's case.
The book is very credible because Oliver Sacks, the author, is very highly regarded and respected
throughout the medical community. His experience in the field is extensive, and that kind of
expertise is shown throughout the book, as Sacks would re–diagnose patients who were previously
diagnosed something wrong.
The point of view is unexpected. Oliver Sacks was not an outside observer to the world of mental
conditions, not because of his working with patients on a daily basis, but because he actually had a
condition. Oliver Sacks' condition was a less serious version of the condition that "the man who
mistook his wife for a hat" had. Oliver Sacks had a mild form of visual agnosia, which means that
one can see, but has trouble interpreting what one is seeing. "The man who mistook his wife for a
hat" could see a glove as "a continuous surface infolded on itself. It has five outpouchings." When
Sacks told him that it was a glove, he was very surprised, but could understand how. Oliver Sacks
had trouble distinguishing faces because of this agnosia of vision, which made him very shy.
The accuracy of the science in this book, as with any current book on the brain and mind, is bound

Literary Analysis : St. Clare Of Assisi
The sources composed or directed by the women are probably the most profitable in giving
understanding into how women thought and felt. As one may expect, most female created works get
by from women of higher economic well–being, since women of lower status were very nearly
never taught to peruse or compose. Religious ladies, case in point, may describe their dreams,
counsel, or directions, especially for the enlighten Hildegard were among the most lucid and most
scholarly of medieval ladies, utilizing the composed word both to secure and aid her group. St. Clare
of Assisi endeavored to do likewise through the rundown of standards she assembled for her nuns in
the thirteenth century. Clare 's Rule, truth be told, recognizes that just some of her nuns were
educated: the individuals who could read were in charge of perusing the religious administrations
with an elevated volume; the individuals who couldn 't be given additional petitions to God to say.
Undoubtedly, Clare did not think it advantageous to educate the nuns to peruse: rather, everybody
ought to work and love as indicated by the gifts and aptitudes they had. Clare 's Rule stressed
acquiescence and modesty, admonishing her nuns to wear modest apparel, talks rarely, and comply
with their abbess (Abelard & Heloise, 1974).
Reports, for example, those of Hildegard and Clare loan knowledge into the ordinary lives of
religious ladies and the connections among them. Different sources created by religious ladies

Enriched Accomplishments
Today on the top of poetry's best seller lists, and classical music's top ten list lies Hildegard von
Bingen. Although she lived 900 years her works are considered to be masterpieces even today. She
was the last of 10 children and was born near Mainz in Germany in 1098. Hildegard von Bingen
was a mystic woman that stood out from the rest, during her infant years she had said that God had
come to her, but she was too young to express it. By eight years old she took on the spiritual life,
and by fifteen she became a nun and vocalized her experiences and visions to others. In doing so,
Hildegard von Bingen removed herself from marriage, motherhood, and traditional medieval
women's work.

Roles Of Athenian Women
The gender divide is clearly illustrated through music. Dominant narratives about music were
expressed and accepted by men for men. This is clearly seen in the era of Athenian Democracy as
prominent philosophers, like Plato and Aristotle, failed to discuss the role of women in the music of
the polis. The narratives of these women are seemingly excluded because of their confidence in their
sexuality. This skepticism in the confidence of women is continued in the debate of the Early
Christians, like St. Augustine and Hildegard of Bingen. In contrast, the musical narratives of women
in early–Islam were favored and discussed more openly. However, these narratives were mostly
suppressed by the continued fear of women's sexuality. Women's sexuality ... Show more content on

The tolerance of women who engaged in music is written by Amnon Shiloah as "singing–girls often
participated with other women who, according to Farmer, "enjoyed almost as much liberty as men"
in the performance of music with instruments at family festivities.." (Shiloah, Music and Religion in
Islam, 147) While these singing–girls were allowed to perform freely it is important to note where:
family festivities. These girls were openly allowed to engage in music if it was controlled by the
dominant role of men in families. This argument can further be seen in Shiloah's piece when he
transcribes a section from a hadith that states "but if you must engage in it (music), keep the women
and children away from it, for singing is the instigator of fornication." (Shiloah, Music and Religion
in Islam, 148) Women still had a highly sexual role in music and their role was moreso illustrated
under a negative light of music. The illustration of women is further discussed by Shiloah when he
writes about the "four upon whom Allah will not look on the day of resurrection" (Shiloah, Music
and Religion in Islam, 148) and these are "the sorceress, the wailing–woman, the singing woman
and the woman who is unfaithful to her husband." (Shiloah, Music and Religion in Islam, 148) This
skepticism of women's sexuality is again reinscribed in the music of

The Dark Ages: The Myth Of The Middle Ages
Over the years historians had agreed and disagreed over the though of the middle ages being a dark

daily activities. They didn't lack intelligence, but they never had a reason to design aircraft or

sustainability. The focus back then was to live. The myth that the "dark ages" was dark is the truth,

Hildegard Of Bingen
The Hildegard of Bingen was a great woman with a great story with that should be presented in a
very tasteful way that can be explained to all generations. For this reason for my film I would care
for it be a animated film, preferably 3–D so that way we can show a movie that all audiences even
children can connect too. But, at the same time the movie shouldn't be so childish that we can't show
the seriousness within her life. Now every movie has needs a main plot and for that I would need
some parts from her life. For those parts of her life I would choose the writing of her three volumes
of visionary theology. These include Scivias ("Know the Ways), Liber Vitae Meritorum ("Book of

classical and very religious if possible with plenty of hymns and chanting with the occasional play

Essay on Faith and Reason
Pope John Paul II once said, "Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to
the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth – in a
word, to know himself – so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the
fullness of truth about themselves." (Fallible Blogma) Based on this significant and powerful quote,
one can infer that faith and reason are directly associated and related. It can also be implied that the
combination of faith and reason allows one to seek information and knowledge about truth and God;
based on various class discussions and past academic teachings, it is understood that both faith and

Thomas Aquinas are considered to be scholastics. Because of this vast academic difference, it can be
easy to assume that the interpretation of faith and reason among mystics and scholastics would
obviously be different. However, since Ibn Rushd, Moses Maimonides and St. Thomas Aquinas are
all scholastics their views will essentially be somewhat parallel and connected. Before being able to
truly understand what each philosopher's stance ultimately is, this writer feels that it is important to
distinguish the difference between each school of thought; the schools of thought in particular would
be mysticism and scholasticism. According to the class discussion, materials and presentation, the
term mysticism refers to a very personal and individual religious experience. In this school of
thought, private faith and philosophy is accompanied with an emotional experience that surpasses
reason. Mystics have a personal preference of a direct relationship and experience with God, or the
divine. Mystics, like the ones studied in class, use certain visions, dreams and revelations to gain
definite knowledge from God; further, mystics typically revolve their studies around God's infinite
love.
Conversely, the other school of thought is scholasticism; based on the class materials, it is
understood that scholasticism refers to various methods and diverse ways of teaching in academic
institutions. Differently from mysticism, this school of thought combines faith and reason.

Men And Women : The Greatest Achievement Than Any Man Or...
No human being could grasp the truth of our existence, or the existence our universe and all that
reside within. All we are able to do, is attempt to comprehend what God's purpose in his creation of
our universe. Throughout the existence humanity, we have deemed this understanding as the
"Logos" or "Truth". To reach Logos would be the greatest achievement than any man or woman
could achieve, yet this is something that is unheard of. Throughout history man has attempted to
achieve logos, while others determined reasons why man will never be able to attain it. There were
also those who claimed to have reached Logos, but were usually thought of as liars, thus providing
information that was not the truth. Yet, what if these men and women truly did reach Logos? How
would common men and women be able to understand? The answer is blurry because of the lack of
understanding that we have of what is "truth". It is agreed that the only being that is capable of
having complete Logos is God, the creator of all. It was believed that only through the practice of
Christianity can man achieve Logos; through the teachings of God himself. Even those who were
Christian argued how to truly practice their faith, and how to show their understanding of God.
Some men a women believed that they could only truly understand God by understanding his

Egeria is perceived as a mysterious worshipper of her time, around the fourth century. Hildegard of
Bingen is believed to be a twelfth century renaissance woman. Due to time and lack of proper

nun who lived in the fourth century. Hildegard existed between the years 1098 and 1179 and she was
a German medieval composer (Newman 273). Notably, the musical works of Hildegard are set in a
liturgical way.
Hildegard's Alleluia is a typical plain chant with the main message being unending praises for Virgin
Mary. It is done by a group of soloists who take a lead in turns as the others give responses. The
piece is monophonic, that is one note per syllable, with minimal movement. Notably the single
melody has no accompaniment (Newman 273). Being a sacred text, it is meant to be used during
worship and mostly during feasts to honor Mary especially in the Roman Catholic setting. The work
of Hildegard generally portrays great knowledge and wisdom in the field of music. ... Show more

In ancient times, women were given away to be married or given to abbey's to be cared for at very
young ages. Some of these women grew to be just mothers and wife's, while others became great

when she was turned over to an abbey in the Rhineland to be cared for. Gluckel was at the age of
almost fourteen years when her father betrothed her to be married to Chayim Hameln. At the age of

Hildegard Von Bingen Reflection Essay
For my film review I decided to watch Vision: The Life of Hildegard von Bingen, (2009). The story
of a 12th century German nun, Hildegard von Bingen (Barbara Sukowa), that was best known for
her visions of God that were written down by Monk Volmar (Heino Ferch) and her fellow nun
Richardis von Stade (Hannah Herzsprung). The film starts off with Hildegard being brought to the
cloister as a young child because she speaks the language of God, although she does not admit this
until later in life when she finally confides in Monk Volmar whom appears to be her closest friend
and confidant. Much of this film appears to deal with her rise and fall from grace with various
people because she stood her ground on the legitimacy of her visions and learnings. This leads to her
becoming a polarizing figure in the Christian world at the time especially to the women that join the
cloister to follow her. But much of the drama and the center of the plot deals with many of the
Christian leaders not following their own teachings, including her. After being brought to the cloister
by her mother, a young Hildegard von Bingen is introduced to the anchoress Jutta of Sponheim
(Mariele Blendl) and is introduced to her daughter that becomes Hildegard's sister. Several years
later, after the cloister has gained a much stronger female following, when Jutta of Sponheim dies,
there is an election for a new Magistra between Sister Hildegard and Sister Jutta (Lena Stolze),
which Sister Hildegard wins. After becoming Magistra, Hildegard begins having stronger visions
from the "Living Light" which she says is the voice of God. After her first intense vision she brings
them up to her friend, Monk Volmar, whom then persuades her to allow him to write some of them
down. He believes in these visions so much that he brings them to the leader of the cloister, Abbot of
Disbodenber (Alexander Held) whom dismisses them as false at first, but concedes that he does not
have the power to deem them as lies and if they are true, they could bring great fortune and gifts to
the cloister. The Abbot then proceeds to invite higher level priests to come verify the visions, but
they too believe them to be false but send it up to the Archbishop of Mainz, Bernard of

Allowing for discussion of these altering views creates a unique opportunity for students to dig into
their values and ideas to formulate arguments. Students are forced to view topics from the

idea of awareness comes into play. Hearing different perspectives has the ability for students to

Bible has allowed me to strengthen my faith in my own unique way. A fact for which I am very
grateful, a semi–enlightenment that I would not have achieved without studying the humanities.
Ultimately I can't stress the value of studies in the humanities. The necessity to explore our cultural,

  • 1. Hildegard Von Bingen Research Paper Matthew Wenning History of Western Music Before 1750 Mon–Wed 9:45– 11:15 Hildegard Von Bingen's Impact on Early Western Music Hildegard Von Bingen was an amazing woman who impacted not only early western music, but also impacted early western civilization. Overcoming gender boundaries of the time, she was looked at to advise major men of power. She was not only known for her musical compositions, but she broke through in many fields making an impact in all of them. Hildegard Von Bingen was born as the tenth child in her family. As the tenth child in early western culture you were looked at as unable to be fed by the family, so Hildegard was dedicated to the church. At the age of eight she was sent to an anchoress name Jutta to receive a religious education. Hildegard felt that she had a lack of education. She learned to read Psalter in Latin. In her writings she described her visions, and the symptoms pointed to the same symptoms that result in migraines. • 3. Women 's Life Of Christianity The women in the history involved in the church played a variety of roles in their life of Christianity. During early Christianity, they were mostly health care givers, teachers, and missionaries. Until recent times, women were mostly excluded from higher church positions such as episcopal and clerical jobs within the churches. However a good number of women have been influential in the life of the church – from contemporaries of Jesus, to subsequent saints, theologians, doctors of the church, missionaries, abbesses, nuns, mystics, founders of religious institutes, military leaders, monarchs and martyrs. Christianity from the start placed men in positions of authority in marriage, government, community, family, and pretty much anything. The religion only allowed membership of priests to males only. There was a wide following amount of women with an enhanced social status, while they believed and practiced Christianity, they were only allowed to follow the men. Later centuries, as religious groups of women and nuns flourished, women came to play an important role in Christianity through convents and abbeys and have continued through history to be active. They mostly participated in schools, hospitals, nursing homes and monastic settlements. A lot has changed in recent decades, with the ordination of women in some churches have become pretty popular. Focusing on the early century of Christianity, played a huge role in re–defining a women's credibility within the Christian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Iron-Colored Mountain And The One True Light Both "The Iron–Colored Mountain and the Radiant One" and "The One True Light" illustrate religion in the world and how no one really knows exactly who or what the Light is. In the passage written by Hildegard of Bingen, she writes about seeing the One, being so bright that it blinds her vision. It's the Light that is her God and the mountain of eyes The One sits atop of to me represents all the different religions in the world. In "The One True Light" by Rumi, the parts of the elephant represents the same. The people feel different sections of the elephant and each of them believe that it's something different. Reinhard Heydrich Research Paper Reinhard Heydrich known as"The Blond Beast" or "Hangman Heydrich" was born in the German city of Halle, near Leipzig on March 7,1904 he was the second of three children .When Heydrich was six months old he suffered an inflammation of the brain that could've killed him, as well as a few other illnesses that were life threatening. In order to overcome this, his father motivated him to take up as many sports as possible such as running, horse–riding, football, swimming, and fencing. Heydrich was raised in a musical background. He had a strong love for the violin. So Heydrich did what any enthusiast would do, he trained seriously and eventually developed an expert skill for it, as well as a life–long passion for the violin. Chris Trueman researched and found out that "Research ordered by Gregor Strasser in 1932–1933, came across an entry in the 1916 version of Riemann's Musical Encyclopedia which read 'Heydrich, Bruno, real name as Süss' "(Simkin). Eventually it was found out that Reinhard's father's real last name was Süss and even though Heydrich was not Jewish, Süss was a common German–Jewish last name at the time. It was then implied that Heydrich's father was Jewish. He was targeted for school bullying due to his high–pitched voice, his devotion to Catholicism, and the suspicion that he was of Jewish ancestry. He was usually pummeled by the larger boys but the main idea that got to him was the fact that he was made fun of because they thought he was Jewish. Heydrich was plagued with racial anti–semitic slurs because of the rumors of jewish ancestry in his family. • 9. Hildegard Of Bingen Research Papers Dr. Fassler's lecture on Hildegard was absolutely fascinating to me. I had never heard of the Cosmic Egg, so I was obviously perplexed by the entire idea of it as well as the link between cosmology, faith, and art. Hildegard of Bingen brings science, theology, art, and music together in a digital display. Her way of thinking about everything not as flat, but as dome–ified, revolutionized many aspects of faith and education. Dr. Fassler's team is working on Hildegard's thought of taking a flat image, and turning it into a movable, 3–D image. Dr. Fassler also transcribed some of Hildegard's music and had vocal graduate students at Notre Dame sing through the pieces. Hildegard said she heard music without words, but put words in the pieces so ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The wind chart shows the four wind heads holding up the universe. Jesus and Mary are shown as the new Adam and new Eve. In Dr. Fassler's work, Act l will show the construction of the egg, Act ll will be a zoomable exploration of it, and the work will end with the egg destroyed and frozen forever in the universe. Dr. Fassler showed a tapestry from around 1100 in Spain. The piece showed the four winds, earth, darkness, the spirit of God, water, and light. In addition, one of the winds was sitting on a bagpipe sort of instrument with two horns in its mouth and feathers on its feet to resemble flight. The creation of light is very important to Hildegard. She refers to angels as being made of pure, living light. The darkness stands for the fallen angels. She shows nine ranks of angels in the tapestry. There were originally ten, but Lucifer's order fell. Dr. Fassler pointed out the idea that God created humankind to take the place where Lucifer fell. Mankind then fell, and we must regain our voices and place through praise. Hildegard said that the universe did not spin until Adam fell with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Plainchant Compare And Contrast The plainchants Viderunt Omnes by Anonymous and O viridissima virga by Hildegard of Bingen are both compositions that were created during the Medieval Age, also known as the Middle Age. The purpose of these pieces were to be served usually in Roman Catholic Churches as music of worship. Although these two songs are known as plainchants, meaning they are usually monophonic and the melody usually does not change, both pieces have many similarities and differences. In my personal opinion, I believe that these two piece are more different than they are similar. For example, Viderunt Omnes is polyphonic for a majority of its duration because it sounds to be sung in unison by a choir and not by a singular person. O viridissima virga on the other ... • 13. Middle Ages And Their Impact On Culture Essay Influential Figures of the Middle Ages and Their Impact on Culture The Middle Ages were a time of cultural development and lasting impacts that laid the groundwork for the culture present in Western civilization today. Several influential figures contributed to the cultural development in the Middle Ages. Hildegard of Bingen improved the status of women in her day and through her, feminism continued to progress. Next, Thomas Aquinas created a philosophy that left a lasting impression on the Catholic Church. Finally, Roger Bacon played a hand in several scientific discoveries and created a system of natural knowledge that is still used today. All three left a lasting mark on the Middle Ages in ways that have helped shape the culture of the Western world today. First, there was Hildegard of Bingen who played a crucial role in her day as an influential female in an age where women were usually overlooked. Hildegard transcended the bans that restricted women's social participation. As a visionary, she voiced her disapproval on simony and helped reform the churches. Early feminists used Hildegard's success to argue for women's rights to attend medical schools. In modern times, scholars used her in a new age movement for her holistic view of healing. ... • 15. The Life of Hildegard Von Bingen Isaiah Dr. Brauner Music History 211 Flanangan, Sabina . Hildegard of Bingen, A Visionary Life. New York: Routlege, 1989. This book mainly focuses on the life of Hildegard as a spiritualist and a healer, as do most books that were written about her. It begins by outlining the basic events of her life and death; her illness as a child, her education at a convent by a woman named Jutta, and the visions she saw from an early age. She regarded these visions as gifts from God but was reluctant to share them with the world until one critical dream. "And it came to pass...when I was forty–two years and seven months old that the heavens were opened up and a blinding light... flowed through my entire brain... and I suddenly understood the ... Let no man be so bold as to add anything to this book... nor to delete anything...lest he be deleted from the book of life..." This suggests that people in high power were beginning to tire of a woman with so much control and influence over the common people and were trying to silence her by censoring or even outright discrediting her. Hildegard of Bingen January 23 1996, Johannes Gutenberg–University <http://www.staff.uni–mainz.de/horst/hildegard/> This is a particularly good internet resource because it was compiled by a group of people working to promote the tradition of Hildegard, as is stated in the their name, Working Group for the Promotion of the Tradition of Hildegard. Also it is a group that is based in Germany, so their culture is more closely rooted to the history of Hildegard than would be if it were a group of American historians. It provides links to several documents that were written on the subject on the life of Hildegard von Bingen, a link to an encyclopedia dedicated to catholic history, and a forum for the die hard Hildegard fans or the world. • 17. Hildegard 's Gender Is Of Course Not An Accident Hildegard's gender is of course not an accident. Throughout history, we have claimed Hildegard as the first Christian thinkers to deal seriously and positively with feminine issues, as well as the challenges posed by and for women in a patriarchal society. She formulated her thoughts within the traditional framework of christian symbols, through the great reflection on the great feminine representations and essence of Eve, Mary, and Mother church. In our current struggles of spirituality and gender, Hildegard can be a guide. Her visionary forms fade into one another, but within all of them and behind them all, shines neither women nor man, but the living light. By using Hildegard of Bingen as a central figure in 12th century religious practice, we can then use Chritianity as an example to compare and contrast women's experiences in religious practice in the 12th century and the 21st century. Hildegard was destined from an early age to live a life of enclosure in her cell. Rather than choosing to enter their daughter formally as a child in a covenant where she would be brought up to become a nun, Hildegard's parents locked her in a cell of anchoress. A daughter of a local count, Jutta, undertook to instruct Hildegard in the recitation of the psalter and in other womanly occupations, such as sewing, cooking, and cleaning. It was essential in the 12th century that women were taught to perform these gendered duties so they could provide for their husbands and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Hildegard Von Bingen Music has been around for ages and still plays a critical role in everyone's life. During the Medieval period, many turned to the arts and music to cope with the hardships of that time. The history of music is best told by the styles that emerged and the composers who lived during the Medieval period. One composer, by the name of Hildegard Von Bingen, changed the way people saw music during this time. In this essay, I will analyze "O Virtus Sapientiae" by Hildegard Von Bingen. When listening to Hildegard's piece, my temporary state of mind becomes more serene and spiritual (Mood). The piece creates an atmosphere that helps me forget about my troubles and gives me hope. Because the song sounds like something you would hear if you were to go to church to worship, it makes me think of religion; Specifically being at church (Imagery). As I listened and closed my eyes, I could picture myself sitting in church and looking at the light that passes through the stained glass windows. Hildegard's piece reminds me of waking up on ... We know this because there's a female vocalist who is moving from one note to the next and only singing that note at a time. The Viola being played only plays one note at a time and serves as a drone. A drone is a rudimentary version of Medieval harmony which is a single, sustained pitch played or sung as accompaniment. The melodic style of the song is Legato, or notes that are smooth and connected in style. At the timestamp 2:24 – 2:27, the vocals are at the highest and loudest point of the melody, which is called a melodic climax. This musical element helps draws attention to specific words in the text. Hildegard specifically manipulated musical elements in order to bring emphasis to certain words in a text, an effect in which she shows that music can heighten emotions and/or direct the listener's ... Hildegard Von Bingen Vision In the 2009 film, Vision: The Life of Hildegard von Bingen, the writer/director Margarethe von Trotta puts focus on Hildegard's journey to serve the Lord as best she can, in a time where the church is run by powerful men, and where the Roman Catholic Church is focused on centralizing the church and government though the first crusades. Hildegard (Barbara Sukowa) changes the history of the church by transcribing her visions into text and by breaking away from her cloister to start her own monasteries. As a visionary, she sees God through a different lens and thinks of him not to be feared, but to be celebrated. She believes his gifts will heal and guide, so long as one's heart is pure and humble. Margarethe von Trotta does a great job of showing the audience that Hildegard's view of God is not the same as the masses, some of which viewed God as a punisher that should be feared. As the film opened, the audience was exposed to the apocalyptic thinking of members of the church. The first scene of the movie shows a gathering of people in a place of worship, waiting out the end of the world. This congregation is surprised to wake up to another day. This was a common theme in earlier Christianity, and a view that later in the movie, we realize Hildegard von Bingen didn't share. A similar scene in terms of how one viewed God, was that of self–flagellation early on in the movie. With the self–harming of one's body for sacrifice to God, to suffer as Jesus did, it gives the ... • 23. Comparison Of Pessimism In 'Know The Ways Of The Lord'? Medieval religious literature served to teach and instruct followers of the ways of religion, specifically Christianity, through vivid imagery. Three texts that support this idea are Hildegard of Bingen's "Know the Ways of the Lord", Pope Innocent III's "On the Misery of the Human Condition," and "Everyman." Although these texts represent the same idea, there are two surprising differences between them. The first being between "Know the Ways of the Lord" and "Everyman", which shows the different interventions of God. The second surprising difference is the optimism of "Know the Ways of the Lord" and the contrasting pessimism of "On the Misery of the Human Condition." These two passages have differing messages regarding life and death. During this time, texts usually instill the idea of fearing God, which is contrary to the passage written by Hildegard of Bingen. "Know the Ways of the Lord" gives an optimistic tone, unlike "On the Misery of the Human Condition" which displays more pessimism. The optimism of Bingen's writing is displayed through the quote, "It happened in the year 1141 of the Incarnation of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, when I was forty–two years and seven months old, that a fiery light of the greatest radiance coming from the open heavens flooded through my brain. It kindled my whole breast like a flame that does not scorch but warms in the same way the sun warms anything on which it sheds its rays" (Know the Ways of the Lord lines 21–26). The use of phrases such as "a flame that does not scorch but warms" show the use of a less god–fearing tone and a greater closeness with God. On the other hand, Pope Innocent III writes, "In life, he produced lice and tapeworms; in death, he will produce worms and flies. In life he produced dung and vomit; in death, he produces rottenness and stench" (Innocent lines 28–30). Pope Innocent III demonstrates the negative connotation of the death and decay of humans. Hildegard utilizes techniques of singing and shouting to emphasize various characteristics in Ordo Virtutum. 1. The Devil is not given any singing lines, rather, is directed to shout his lines. Given the idea that music is the imitation of divine harmony, the Devil should take no part in music. 2. The Devil intervenes within the scenes of light and purity by shouting his threats. By using such extreme differences in vocal technique, the essential message of the morality play is shown here. C. • 31. The Reflection Of Music Music is one of the most important parts of human society. It is used as an emotional outlet and allows people to express themselves. "Music is a reflection of self." Music is the relationship between tones that normally on their own would not be too exciting, but once put together they convey emotions, thoughts, and ideas. Music is meant to transport an individual to another world, the composer's world. A composer will construct a story influenced by their own lives and their society. An important part of the music is also the history behind it and how it has impacted people. "Music is defined as a practical activity, and is an art form that has always invited theoretical speculation and critical reflection." Music is everywhere and is in everyone's life but, not everyone knows its early history and how it evolved into today's genres. Researching, studying and examining early music and its evolution reveals how music has transformed from simple monophonic lines with no real timing into large orchestral pieces. Early forms of music included one or two parts, while orchestral pieces included multiple types of instruments, each independently playing different parts. Musicology is the is the process study, inquiry and reflection of music, while it forms its own context and employs distinct concepts, it's clearly dependant upon and reflective of music as its subject." • 39. Hildegard: Scotomas And Phosphenes: A Case Study The Visions of Hildegard: Scotomas and Phosphenes Oliver Sacks (2007) discussed a case study concerning Hildegard of Bingen, a nun who lived from 1098 to 1180 A.D. Hildegard experienced visual auras caused by scintillating scotomas which inspired her to write the book Scivias documenting her visual experiences (Sacks, 2007). From these illustrations and written descriptions, Sacks (2007) was able to theorize that Hildegard was actually experiencing an array of scotomas and phosphenes. Sacks (2007) proposed that Hildegard's visions were her interpretations of scintillating and central scotomas, occurring both individually and back– to–back within the same migraine (Sacks, 2007). For instance, Sacks (2007) believed the bright falling stars in one of her visions were the result of phosphenes, followed by a negative scotoma which was a blindspot in her visual field. The vibrant colors within the illustrations were also influenced by her scotomas (Sacks, 2007). This paper provides an understanding of what Hildegard may have perceived with her scotomas and phosphenes through the use of two research articles. First Article In the first article, Knight, Mazzi and Savazzi (2015) made 3 hypotheses. The first hypothesis was that the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) threshold would change when the background changed from uniform to pattern (Knight et al., 2015). The second hypothesis was that the likelihood of the participant sensing light versus dark percepts would change when global luminance of the background changed (Knight et al., 2015). The third hypothesis was that the likelihood of light versus dark percepts would stay the same at different TMS intensities (Knight et al., 2015). The study had 16 participants who all wore corrective lens (Knight et al., 2015). To test the threshold of phosophenes, a Method of Constant Stimuli (MOCS) was used (Knight et al., 2015). The participants received 120 randomly administered trials with pulses from TMS under two different background conditions (Knight et al., 2015). A paired t–test was used to analyze the difference in stimulator intensity threshold for inducing percepts between background conditions (Knight et al., 2015). During the Renaissance period, the vast majority of the musical moved from the church to the courts. Composers were more open to experimentation, and had more imaginative opportunity and basically were no longer afraid of the churches response. In this time frame the church had less control over musical movement and this allowed the composers to go in their own direction with minimum consequences. In this time frame the Kings, Princes and other prominent members of the courts had a greater amount of an impact over the music, yet the church still attempted to keep the music pure and basically the same. Renaissance is otherwise called rebirth this time changed the tone of music "it is the name given to a complex current of thought that worked deep changes on Europe from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century." (Kerman, 60) There was a shift towards a more secular society during the European Renaissance and this is where you can see the dramatic changes to the musical style. The Renaissance marks the door opening for the European society to change form the predominantly religious mood to a more secular or common society and with this shift the church was pretty much on hush hush the composers of this time had taken over. This awakening was called humanism. Humanism was more of the use of reason or and observation. The humanists emphasized the importance of human qualities rather than religious convictions therefore music played a vital role in this change as well and it evolved right along with the times. In the Renaissance, one of the most popular sacred genres that were written in Latin text was the Motet. One of the composers of the Motet was Guillaume de Machaut, His motets stand out for their changing rhythms, longer lengths and integration of sacred and secular texts. Another composer was Thomas Weelkes one example of his music was Madrigal, "As Vesta Was from Latinos Hill Descending." When it came to the Motet, the Motet had to a greater extent an assortment of words which permitted the composer to have more of a religious message in the music, and as you read alongside the music you can see that a portion of the words are right out of the book of Bible its self. Motets touched on certain issues such as politics, love and the loss of love, valor chivalry, desire and fellowship all at the same time. "The Mass took a more relaxed attitude toward medieval authority." (Kerman, 63) and is also a form of scared music. One example of a Mass is "Ave Maris Stella" by Guillaume Duffy this more of ... This is clearly seen in the era of Athenian Democracy as prominent philosophers, like Plato and Aristotle, failed to discuss the role of women in the music of the polis. The narratives of these women are seemingly excluded because of their confidence in their sexuality. This skepticism in the confidence of women is continued in the debate of the Early Christians, like St. Augustine and Hildegard of Bingen. In contrast, the musical narratives of women in early–Islam were favored and discussed more openly. However, these narratives were mostly suppressed by the continued fear of women's sexuality. These girls were openly allowed to engage in music if it was controlled by the dominant role of men in families. • 61. Hildegard Of Bingen The Hildegard of Bingen was a great woman with a great story with that should be presented in a very tasteful way that can be explained to all generations. For this reason for my film I would care for it be a animated film, preferably 3–D so that way we can show a movie that all audiences even children can connect too. But, at the same time the movie shouldn't be so childish that we can't show the seriousness within her life. Now every movie has needs a main plot and for that I would need some parts from her life. For those parts of her life I would choose the writing of her three volumes of visionary theology. These include Scivias ("Know the Ways), Liber Vitae Meritorum ("Book of Life's Merits"); and Liber Divinorum Operum ("Book of Divine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also all the other people would wear clothing that would suit the time period around the time of Hildegard, which is around the 1100s. I will have the film set in old Germany for the location with many images of the church and the old city of Bemersheim. The film would also flip to Rupertsberg, as well to England to refer to the Pope and King of England. The musical style of this would be classical and very religious if possible with plenty of hymns and chanting with the occasional play of instruments such as woodwinds, strings, and drums. As for the soundtrack I would include Symphonia Virginum, Antiphon: O rubur, and Hymn: Cum vox singuis. I chose these songs due to the relevance they have to Hildegard ad the fact they go perfectly with what would be the emotion of the film. I would include one or two of these pieces as diegestic music that way not everything is background music and they are quite suitable pieces for diegestic music. As for the choice of whether I would opt for a compilation score of other pieces or an original score from the present, the answer would have to be an original score from the present. I feel like a present–day composer could understand me better and create a compilation score that is perfect for such a film like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Essay on Faith and Reason Pope John Paul II once said, "Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth – in a word, to know himself – so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves." (Fallible Blogma) Based on this significant and powerful quote, one can infer that faith and reason are directly associated and related. It can also be implied that the combination of faith and reason allows one to seek information and knowledge about truth and God; based on various class discussions and past academic teachings, it is understood that both faith and reason are the instruments that diverse parties ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thomas Aquinas are considered to be scholastics. Because of this vast academic difference, it can be easy to assume that the interpretation of faith and reason among mystics and scholastics would obviously be different. However, since Ibn Rushd, Moses Maimonides and St. Thomas Aquinas are all scholastics their views will essentially be somewhat parallel and connected. Before being able to truly understand what each philosopher's stance ultimately is, this writer feels that it is important to distinguish the difference between each school of thought; the schools of thought in particular would be mysticism and scholasticism. According to the class discussion, materials and presentation, the term mysticism refers to a very personal and individual religious experience. In this school of thought, private faith and philosophy is accompanied with an emotional experience that surpasses reason. Mystics have a personal preference of a direct relationship and experience with God, or the divine. Mystics, like the ones studied in class, use certain visions, dreams and revelations to gain definite knowledge from God; further, mystics typically revolve their studies around God's infinite love. Conversely, the other school of thought is scholasticism; based on the class materials, it is understood that scholasticism refers to various methods and diverse ways of teaching in academic institutions. Differently from mysticism, this school of thought combines faith and reason. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Men And Women : The Greatest Achievement Than Any Man Or... No human being could grasp the truth of our existence, or the existence our universe and all that reside within. All we are able to do, is attempt to comprehend what God's purpose in his creation of our universe. Throughout the existence humanity, we have deemed this understanding as the "Logos" or "Truth". To reach Logos would be the greatest achievement than any man or woman could achieve, yet this is something that is unheard of. Throughout history man has attempted to achieve logos, while others determined reasons why man will never be able to attain it. There were also those who claimed to have reached Logos, but were usually thought of as liars, thus providing information that was not the truth. Yet, what if these men and women truly did reach Logos? How would common men and women be able to understand? The answer is blurry because of the lack of understanding that we have of what is "truth". It is agreed that the only being that is capable of having complete Logos is God, the creator of all. It was believed that only through the practice of Christianity can man achieve Logos; through the teachings of God himself. Even those who were Christian argued how to truly practice their faith, and how to show their understanding of God. Some men a women believed that they could only truly understand God by understanding his creations. Thus a majority of scholars and philosophers believed they were beginning to grasp an understanding of God. On the other hand, there were those ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Hildegard Von Bingen: Know The Ways Of The Lord Hildegard von Bingen, a German prophetic visionary and polymath, lived in the twelfth century at a time when the church was becoming corrupt and unstable. As a young nun in the Benedictine community at Rupertsburg and under Jutta's tutelage, Hildegard acquired a prolific knowledge of the Christian scriptures as well as the doctrines and theology of the Church. She was able to use this knowledge to shape her ideas and to lobby for church reform. Throughout her life, Hildegard received visions that were believed to have been divinely inspired. She was encouraged to write down these 'visions' in her exemplary work, the Scivias–'Know the Ways of the Lord'– which was approved by papal imprimatur and as such was motivated to carry God's Work. • 69. Hildegard Alleluia Essay Egeria is perceived as a mysterious worshipper of her time, around the fourth century. Hildegard of Bingen is believed to be a twelfth century renaissance woman. Due to time and lack of proper records, details about Egeria are not well known. However, people speculate that she was a Spanish nun who lived in the fourth century. Hildegard existed between the years 1098 and 1179 and she was a German medieval composer (Newman 273). Notably, the musical works of Hildegard are set in a liturgical way. Hildegard's Alleluia is a typical plain chant with the main message being unending praises for Virgin Mary. It is done by a group of soloists who take a lead in turns as the others give responses. The piece is monophonic, that is one note per syllable, with minimal movement. Notably the single melody has no accompaniment (Newman 273). Being a sacred text, it is meant to be used during worship and mostly during feasts to honor Mary especially in the Roman Catholic setting. The work of Hildegard generally portrays great knowledge and wisdom in the field of music. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 73. Compare And Contrast Hamal And Hildegarn In ancient times, women were given away to be married or given to abbey's to be cared for at very young ages. Some of these women grew to be just mothers and wife's, while others became great and important women in society. Hildegard of Bingen and Gluckel of Hameln are two great examples of such women in history. Hildegarn and Gluckel both grew up as any other normal little girl. Until the day everything changed when they were given away. Hildegarn was eight years old when she was turned over to an abbey in the Rhineland to be cared for. Gluckel was at the age of almost fourteen years when her father betrothed her to be married to Chayim Hameln. At the age of fourteen, she married him and started her family. Hildegarn grew up learning Latin and receiving a good education. While she was a child, she started to have mystical visions. In middle age, her visions became more dramatic. By the age of 42 everything became more clear to her when the heavens opened up to her. She was filled with exceptional brilliance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 75. Hildegard Von Bingen Reflection Essay For my film review I decided to watch Vision: The Life of Hildegard von Bingen, (2009). The story of a 12th century German nun, Hildegard von Bingen (Barbara Sukowa), that was best known for her visions of God that were written down by Monk Volmar (Heino Ferch) and her fellow nun Richardis von Stade (Hannah Herzsprung). The film starts off with Hildegard being brought to the cloister as a young child because she speaks the language of God, although she does not admit this until later in life when she finally confides in Monk Volmar whom appears to be her closest friend and confidant. Much of this film appears to deal with her rise and fall from grace with various people because she stood her ground on the legitimacy of her visions and learnings. This leads to her becoming a polarizing figure in the Christian world at the time especially to the women that join the cloister to follow her. But much of the drama and the center of the plot deals with many of the Christian leaders not following their own teachings, including her. After being brought to the cloister by her mother, a young Hildegard von Bingen is introduced to the anchoress Jutta of Sponheim (Mariele Blendl) and is introduced to her daughter that becomes Hildegard's sister. Several years later, after the cloister has gained a much stronger female following, when Jutta of Sponheim dies, there is an election for a new Magistra between Sister Hildegard and Sister Jutta (Lena Stolze), which Sister Hildegard wins. After becoming Magistra, Hildegard begins having stronger visions from the "Living Light" which she says is the voice of God. After her first intense vision she brings them up to her friend, Monk Volmar, whom then persuades her to allow him to write some of them down. He believes in these visions so much that he brings them to the leader of the cloister, Abbot of Disbodenber (Alexander Held) whom dismisses them as false at first, but concedes that he does not have the power to deem them as lies and if they are true, they could bring great fortune and gifts to the cloister. The Abbot then proceeds to invite higher level priests to come verify the visions, but they too believe them to be false but send it up to the Archbishop of Mainz, Bernard of ... • 77. Oh The Humanities Research Paper Oh the Humanities! Who wouldn't want to study the stories that gave life to the world as we know it? Read books that saved millions yet also fanned the flames of war. Texts that question reality, truth, knowledge, wisdom, happiness, and life itself . It seems silly to climb that academic ladder and never once question why. To search for the truth and values of the past is vital in creating a well–rounded student, and more importantly a good person. This paper will examine exactly why the humanities are essential to all and the potential they carry. First and foremost, the humanities implore one to rethink the way in which they think. My experience in the Search courses have challenged my way of thought. Reading the works of people such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Allowing for discussion of these altering views creates a unique opportunity for students to dig into their values and ideas to formulate arguments. Students are forced to view topics from the perspective of others so that they might be able to sustain an argument. Furthermore, when ideas are discussed new points of views are exposed to students and suddenly this immeasurably important idea of awareness comes into play. Hearing different perspectives has the ability for students to better strengthen their argument as well as provide empathy and understanding among those of different backgrounds. For example, in class when we studied texts from the Bible I was forced to see and understand perspectives from students who don't come from a Catholic background. I consider myself catholic however my viewpoints don't always align with the Bible. After class discussion I have been able to interpret the Bible very differently and explore my personal beliefs more. I have been able to refine and deepen my personal views on many topics. In fact, studying the Bible has allowed me to strengthen my faith in my own unique way. A fact for which I am very grateful, a semi–enlightenment that I would not have achieved without studying the humanities. Ultimately I can't stress the value of studies in the humanities. The necessity to explore our cultural, ideological, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
