When You Don’t Like Your Child’s Friend
“Worry is the darkroom in which
negatives are developed.”—
Anonymous
You hate to admit it, but your child has a
friend you don’t like. Sometimes your
dislike is based on something small, such as
an annoying habit or quirk. But sometimes,
your dislike is based on a major reason for
concern, and you’re worried that your
child’s friend will influence him or her in
ways you don’t like. It’s not unusual for
you not to like all your child’s friends. In
fact, as kids grow, they’ll befriend all kinds
of people. Here’s how to handle the
situation.
Try it…
• Know that only your kids can pick their
friends. You can create opportunities from
them, but your kids will be drawn to some
people over others. It’s important to respect
that.
• If your child chooses a friend you don’t
like, get to know that friend. Invite that
child over so you can learn more about
him/her and monitor the situation a bit.
• If possible get to know the child’s parents.
• Identify what bothers you about the friend.
Is the friend bringing out an aspect in your
child you don’t like (such as being more
independent)?
• Ask your child what he or she likes about
this friend (don’t express your disapproval
too strongly). Discern what the attraction
may be.
• Be a strong, positive influence on your
child. Try to counterbalance the negative
with the positive.
Above all, pray for that child & their
relationship.
“Don’t Judge each day by the
harvest you reap, but by the
seeds you plant.”
Robert Louis Stevenson
Our “Integrity” word of the month is:
“Lovely”.
“Finally, Brothers, whatever is True, whatever is
Noble, whatever is Right, whatever is Pure, whatever is
Lovely, whatever is Admirable, if anything is Excellent
or Praiseworthy, think about such things.”
Philippians 4:8
January: Pure
“How can a young man keep his way pure?
By living according to your word.”
Psalm 119:9
Baptism: More than Water
In Baptism, water is poured on you three
times. “In the name of the Father, and of
the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”…that’s
wet!
In Baptism, the message of God’s love
and forgiveness is brought into your
life…that’s wild!
In Baptism, God invites you into His
family, the family of faith, and makes you
His special child…that’s wonderful!
“Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved”
(Mark 16:16A)
