Touchless image interaction technology allows radiologists to perform interventional radiology procedures using hand gestures to capture, browse and manipulate medical images, without needing to touch devices and compromising sterility. Interventional radiology uses minimally invasive techniques guided by medical imaging to perform operations on blood vessels and biopsies. Traditionally, using keyboards, mice or touchscreens during procedures has been difficult for maintaining sterility. Touchless interaction eliminates this issue by recognizing radiologists' hand gestures to control images. It is important for touchless interaction not to scare patients who remain awake during interventional radiology procedures unlike traditional surgeries.

2. Since the 1970s, several new forms of image-guided medical procedures
have been developed. These advancements have reduced the time of
many surgical procedures. Not to mention the new clinical specialist
areas that have been developed. One of them can be referred to as
Interventional Radiology (IR).

3. Interventional Radiology enables radiologists to perform many
minimally invasive vascular operations using various radiological imaging
techniques, such as ultrasound, X-ray fluoroscopy, and magnetic
resonance imaging. IR allows the radiologists to address problems in the
blood vessels, performing biopsies, and chemotherapy for a tumor.
Radiologists rely on images for an indirect view of the area of the
surgery. This intensive dependency on the images means there should
be proper interaction with technology to capture, browse, and
manipulate medical images.

4. While performing Interventional radiology surgeries, sterility matters a
lot. With traditional methods of capturing, browsing, and manipulating
images, maintaining a sterile environment is difficult. This is because the
radiologists must use keyboard, mouse, or touch screen. To create a
sterile environment in operation rooms, the researchers introduced a
technology known as touchless image interaction technology.
Unlike traditional image interaction methods, touchless image
interaction allows the radiologists to capture, browse, and manipulate
images with the hand gestures. The camera-based device recognizes
gestures and responds accordingly. So, doctors don’t need to touch any
device at all. Touchless image interaction eliminates the sterility issue
with image interaction. Researchers are actively exploring the possible
uses of touchless image interaction in other areas.

5. One more important fact about Interventional technology is, unlike
traditional surgeries, a patient is not sedated. In IR, the patient is not
given anesthesia and they remain awake. So, there is a need to manage
the patient in a way that they don’t feel touchless image interaction at
all. The radiologists and their teams must communicate and manage
images in a way that should not scare the patient.
