2. Introduction
5G is the next generation of wireless network technology, designed to meet today's
growing data demands of the future while also expanding the scope of mobile
technology beyond the capabilities of LTE. It will be transformative, fueling innovation
across every industry and every aspect of our lives. Over time, 5G technology will
revolutionize the way we live, work, and play.

5G is the latest generation of mobile communications technology. It incorporates both a
new radio access technology, known as New Radio (NR), and a new core network, known
as the 5G Core (5GC). This agile core will allow mobile operators to deploy and coordinate
an ecosystem of heterogeneous networks in order to provide a tailor-made connectivity
service to their customers (GSMA).
5G - fifth-generation of mobile internet connectivity promising much faster data
download and upload speeds, wider coverage and more stable connections. It's all about
making better use of the radio spectrum and enabling far more devices to access the
mobile internet at the same time (BBC)

4. Possible Benefits of 5G to Nigeria
Remote Healthcare through connected robots for underserve and unserved
communities.
5G will support up to 10x faster speeds for mobile broadband than 4G
(LTE/WiMAX).
Smart Agriculture, Smart Mining and Smart Cities.
High Speed Network Performance with lower latencies.
Lower Cost of Data.
Support for more devices and improve service reliability.
5G technology will help online users stream high definition videos easily,
download high definition content in split seconds and play graphic
demanding games online without lags.
High data rate, reduced latency, energy saving, cost reduction, higher system
capacity, and massive device/multiple connectivity.
6. Constraints of 5G Implementation in Nigeria
Lack of a Robust National 5G Rollout Plan
No clear cut government policy on use-cases and adoption of 5G for
National Growth and Development.
Currently 3G and 4G Network and Services does not have national
spread and a lot of local in local government and rural areas still have
poor 2G services. Thus there is still challenges with the existing
infrastructure for broadband deployment
Lack of effective Compliance Monitoring of Telecommunication
Companies.
Poor existing network Infrastructure.
Poor coverage of 3G/4G services in Nigeria.
7. Imperatives for 5G Adoption and Implementation
Growth of Businesses and new
vistas for business
acceleration.
Improved National Security
Architecture leveraging on 5G
Technology.
Improved online
entertainment service quality.
Improved Digital Economy
Growth of Businesses and new
vistas for business
acceleration.
Growth of Businesses and new
vistas for business
acceleration.
Easier adoption and
implementation of emerging
Technologies
Higher Video Quality, AR,
Mobile Virtual Reality and
their use cases
8. Government Role in Accelerating 5G Implementation
Develop an implementable National 5G Master Plan that address stakeholders
concerns and interest.
Identify National 5G use cases and strategies for their adoption and
implementation.
Critical assessment of existing national telecommunication infrastructure and seeks
ways of improvement.
Accelerate the deployment of 4G Network across the country.
Build national capacity towards the smooth implementation of 5G Technology.
Create an enabling environment for telecoms providers to access equipment
needed for 5G Implementation e.g.;
- Bank of Industry Support.
- Negotiate foreign financial support.
- Tax rebate and import duty waivers
Licensing of additional frequency spectrum to Telecommunications Companies for
5G operations.
Lowering the cost of access to 5G Spectrum (lower spectrum auction prices)
Review of the Nigeria National Broadband Plan-2013 to include 5G.
9. Conclusion
5G Technology will accelerate National growth when roll-out.
There is an urgent need to address and provide solutions for the
identified constraints and 5G implementation challenges in Nigeria.
For 5G deployment in Nigeria to be successful, the nation needs to review
its national plan review its strategic road map and commence immediate
implementation.
