3. Background
The Government of Bangladesh is building its
first nuclear power plant in Rooppur on the east
side of the river Padma near Ishwardi in the
Pabna district of Bangladesh.The nuclear power
plant (NPP) will include two units namely
Rooppur Unit-1 and Rooppur Unit-2 with a
capacity of 1.2GW each.The project is being
implemented by the Bangladesh Atomic Energy
Commission (BAEC), under the guidance of
Science andTechnology Ministry of the
Government of Bangladesh

The power plant of Rooppur is a nuclear power
plant.
Nuclear power plant: A nuclear power plant is a
type of power station that generates electricity
using heat from nuclear reactions.These reactions
take place within a reactor.

5. MECHANISM

The main components of a
NPP are reactor, turbine,
generator, condenser.The
heat liberation in the reactor
due to nuclear fission of fuel is
taken by the coolant
circulating through the reactor
core. Hot coolant leaves the
reactor at top & then flows
through the tubes of steam
generator & passes heat to
feed water.The steam
produced is passed through
the turbine. After work has
been done steam leaves the
turbine & flows through the
condenser.
6. Rooppur NPP construction
details
Construction of the nuclear power plant has
been divided into two stages, including the
preparatory and main stages.The preparatory
construction stage work was carried out during
2015-2016. It included the construction of
amenities and office buildings, roads, security
fences, and storage facilities.
The main construction works include excavation
works, the pit water removal system,
development of pit for units one and two, soil
stabilization works, and foundations for both the
reactor units.

8. Capacity
The nuclear power plant (NPP) will include
two units namely Rooppur Unit-1 and
Rooppur Unit-2 with a capacity of 1.2GW
each.
Total capacity is 2.4GW.

9. Rooppur NPP safety features
The Rooppur NPP incorporates the defence-in-depth
protection system, which is a multi-layer protection and
mitigation system. Any human or man-made accidents can
be mitigated using the system ensuring safety to the
environment.
The system includes five layers of barriers, which will prevent
radiation exposure as well as protect people and the
environment.

10. Rooppur nuclear power plant and climate
change :
The Rooppur nuclear power plant will help
reduce the harmful consequences of climate
change since nuclear power plants virtually
do not generate any CO2 emissions
