History Of Rocklin Police Department
History of Rocklin Police Department
Thirty miles east of California's State Capitol lies a unique town called Rocklin. This small town which was originally known as "Secret Ravine"
originated in 1860, with a population of 440 and is recognized throughout history for its rock quarries and railroads. According to Roy Ruhkala
(1974) Rocklin built its first city jail in the middle of the 1880's, and was crafted of granite, with a small steel window and door. Each night a
watchman patrolled the streets and approximately every evening at 8:00pm a curfew bell would ring, warning all vagrants to leave town and notify
children to get home. Gary Day (2003–2016) claims the jail was intended to house criminals, but in the early 20th century, it became a place for
hobos to escape the long cold nights; however, there was one stipulation, they had to be locked up for the night for fear they would steal the bedding.
In 1946 a young boy named Ernest Willard became Rocklin's first chief of police, his father George was the town marshal. Every morning on his way
to school, Ernest would go by the Jailhouse to let the hobos out. This haven for hobos was an act of compassion and community service that will
forever be remembered. Earnest Willard passed away in 1987 at the age of 90, but in 1983 he served as an honorary marshal in the Rocklin Jubilee
parade, at the time he still possessed a key to the original jail house.

The Incident Of The Platteville Police Department
The ride along occurred on March 2nd of 2016, with the Platteville Police Department. The ride along itself was done by a female police officer,
known as Sierra Vessels with her badge number being 913. The time of the ride along was during one of the non–busier times, as it occurred from 2pm
to 6pm. The reason for choosing the Platteville Police Department was because during the time of establishing the ride along my driver's license was
suspended. The only transportation that I had was either my parents or my legs, so I decided on my legs.
Coming into the ride along there was nothing to my knowledge as to how exactly law enforcement was accomplished. Other than being in traffic
incidents the job itself was always a question to me as what they do over all. Doing the ride along in a small town meant that it would not be as
eventful as doing it with a bigger department. This did not in fact stop the idea of broadening my knowledge about the daily duties that a law
enforcement officer goes through. After the ride along I can say that they should be appreciated more often, as they are only doing their job by
keeping everyone safe, and enforcing the law in order to prevent terrible accidents.
The female officer that took me on the ride along was very friendly so I had the chance to ask multiple questions. Her experience level was small as
she had only been a police officer for six months. She received her bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Colorado State University. The

The Police Department Creating An Environment
Is the US Police department creating an environment in where it is allowed to wrongly
use police force? I would agree. In most cases along with many documentaries, alleged crimes
like these are not always properly addressed by the Justice Department, sometimes even being
shrugged off by the system. In my own simpler words I feel as if this is almost unfair. For those
who might not know what this common, yet almost unrecognizable crime among officers is
simply when authorities abuse of their power, causing grave problems throughout the different
communities across the country to which must be immediately addressed by the system. Along
with this particular social issue, it is mandatory to suggest a few ideas on how the government
can further prevent predicaments like this. Such as the idea of small miniature cameras placed
on the shirt/jackets of the members of the Police department. Another prevention would be that
thorough investigations involving excessive research in background history about the suspect
and victim in such cases must be rechecked by other individuals from higher ranking as well as
not related to the crime. Finally the amount of expenses that the government has to pay every
year in order to undergo investigations in these cases are around the millions to billions giving
another reason to stop police brutality.
As a matter of fact, this is all due to the Justice system allowing to bend its laws around,
in order to protect the

The Welasco Police Department
Law enforcement is one of the three major components of the criminal justice system of the United States, along with courts and corrections. It operates
primarily through governmental police agencies. Enforcement purposes of these agencies are the investigations to the courts, and the temporary
detention of suspended criminals pending judicial action. Police officers work in partnerships with the communities they serve to maintain law and
order, prevent crime, reduce the fear of crime and improve the quality of life for all citizens, and protect the members of the public and their property.
The Weslaco Police Department has eleven divisions. It has a great patrol division and community policing division. One of the department's goals is to
be more involved with the community, parents, and children. Similarities that the Weslaco Police Department and the textbook "An Introduction to
Policing", are the hiring and recruiting process. Almost every police department in the United States works the same way in that process. Many police
departments require that applicants be high school graduates and with a certain number of college hours. Applicants must be at least twenty–one years
of age and U.S. citizens. In some departments weight and height are not important. Since most police departments fall under the civil service
regulations, all applicants must pass written tests that measure their analytical skills. Applicants must also pass a physical exam. Where they must do a

local, state, and federal agencies work to better police communities. * What are the roles and functions of patrol work? Provide a list. * Patrols serve
many functions for police work. Some commonly used methods of patrol include: * Random Patrol * Directed Patrol * Aggressive Patrol *
Saturated Patrol * Random Patrol consists of officers patrolling areas in a random way so that patterns cannot be detected. Random patrols are
designed detect crimes taking place and to deter crimes from taking place due to officer patrol presence. Directed patrol is designed to target hot
spots or areas known from high crime rates. Crime data is collected and it can be determined what areas and at what times crime is likely to occur.
By patrolling at these times, crime can be deterred. Aggressive patrols consist of frequent traffic stops and questioning by officers to draw attention.
The attention drawn by these actions can serve as a major deterrence of crime. A saturated patrol is effective by placing a large number of patrols
within the same areas. The most common form of police patrolling is with an automobile (Grant & Terry, 2012). Automobile patrols have an
advantage because they can cover a large area faster than other means of

(minimum 250 words) The two main paths in life no matter how complicated or hard it can get will always be defined into two sections. These are
the people who will follow the written laws and try to live life according to them, or those who chose to break the law and live according to their own
code of principles that are not agreed upon by the established framework of society. The best thing about this choice is the fact that whether you're a

The simple answer to it is because, the department needs to stay on–top of crime. The long and drawn out answer is that, the nature of police work do
not only apply in the United States, but all over the world need to replace ineffective styles and methods of policing with more advanced,
sustainable, timely, and sophisticated improvements to not only eliminate crime, but allow for better response times and better preparation for
future disasters. Without any sort of improvement within the department we would still be stuck on a small township model from the days of the
Ancient Romans which as we all know, wouldn't achieve a single goal if we kept that model into the modern ages. Time changes, and so should our
department in how we handle situations. Every day crime gets more and more advanced in how it operates and what it extorts. With the increase of
availability in electronic goods, this has not only expanded criminal networks on a global scale, but rapidly drove up possible victims who can now
be tormented, robbed, etc done over a screen. Without continuous improvement within the police department, we would not be able to properly track
and deter these criminals and protect the victims who otherwise would live in torment because we're ill equipped to handle these new threats. Any new
problems that may come up during our career as a police officer, must be

In today's society, law enforcement is facing increased scrutiny and distrust. As we have seen during a recent Council Workshop, community members

The Militarization Of American Police Departments
I chose to do this second paper on the militarization of American police departments. This will lend to the thesis Greg and I intend to submit for our
final presentation – so we are beginning our research now. As discussed in class, the militarization of police departments is leading American police
departments – city or small towns – to act like occupational forces. This is due to several different factors ranging from the availability of weaponry
and tanks, to the training of the police departments, to the accessibility of locating crime by advanced surveillance and tracking systems. To further
our exploration, Greg and I chose two episodes of the HBO show Vice to watch and elaborate on. For our final presentation we will incorporate
these as well as a book Greg has read and some interesting research we will find online. Not only is the militarization of police departments a
controversial subject, the consequences of such a transition of our police is detrimental to many. The episode of Vice, and something we are all
aware of and have discussed extensively in our courses, reference that the consequences are felt far more severely on the African American
population and in low income areas. The two episodes of vice interview several different people about the effects this has on them individually and
their communities. These effects, in turn, lead to lack of faith in law enforcement. The first episode of Vice is titled "Surveillance City" and takes

Research Report On The Boston Police Department
7.Ongoing Research Work Introduction The second part of the research is focused on studying the emotions and sentiments expressed by people who
retweeted the Boston Police Department (BPD) tweets. The goal of this phase was to observe the sentiment among the users who were retweeting the
BPD tweets. We wanted to observe the impact of BPD tweets on the users before they retweeted the BPD tweet and after they retweeted. By doing
this we wanted to capture the shift in sentiment among the users, which would give us the impact of BPD tweet. In order to do the above analysis, the
tweets of those users who had retweeted the BPD tweet were collected. Topsy API was used to collect the historical tweets for the time duration (April

The next step was to observe the sentiment among the users, before and after they had retweeted. We aggregated the 'before' set for all users
corresponding to a particular tweet and generated a set of 145 files. Similarly we generated a set of 145 files for 'After' set as well. Then we used
LIWC to generate the sentiment score for files corresponding to each BPD tweet. Thus for each of the 145 BPD Tweet, we generated sentiment
score of 'before' and 'after', and so we have 290 rows of data as an output by LIWC. When we request Topsy for 200 retweeters of a particular BPD
Tweet, we got a random sample of 200 retweeters. For some of these users, the retweets were outside our time interval of consideration. Therefore
the number of users considered is not the same across all BPD tweets, it is always a number less than 200. Therefore we added 2 new columns for
analysis, the number of users considered and the total number of tweets considered. Later we divided the BPD tweets into two segments 1. Incident
related (The tweets by BPD which spoke about the incident and things related to it) 2. Informational (The tweets by BPD which were sent out to
public about the road being blocked or about parking related etc.). The reason for dividing into 2 segments was to further observe the difference of
impact on users by these tweets, with the help of sentiment scores generated

Roles and Functions The Police Department must serve many roles and purposes so they also must take care of any issues that arise, dealing with
the law or public safety. For this reason they have different specialized concentrations of officers designed to carry out certain functions. This also
varies according to jurisdiction where there are state, local and even federal jurisdictions. This also affects what are their basic roles while doing patrol
work or carrying out the specialized detail for whatever function they need enforced. In the United States the mission of law enforcement is to maintain
the public safety, by reducing the occurrence of crimes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Criminal investigation is also performed as a function of a patrolling officer if they are the first responder to a scene of a crime, they need to secure the
scene, gather evidence and provide emergency assistance, but only a small amount of time is actually spent doing this. Understanding or predicting
crime and partnering with community organizations solve and avoid social problems. Patrol officers also need support services such as their dispatch,
training and human resources; these help maintain an internal organization that is efficient and effective for officers. (Schmallenger, 2011)
Conclusion
The Police Department serve many roles and purposes in the community as previously discussed and in doing so they efficiently take care of issues
that arise in the public concerning their safety. The specialized concentrations of officers and their functions for crime prevention and patrol deter
criminal activity. Jurisdiction does not bound any criminal so there are many different law enforcement agencies to help with these issues and conduct
investigations to enforce laws based on these special needs. The United States mission of law enforcement is to maintain its public safety and with so
many agencies, trained officers and ever evolving goals; they do reduce the crime occurrence

The Police Department Is A Systematic Approach
Baltimore City has seen an influx in violent crimes consisting of homicide, sexual assaults and robbery. It's also noted that there is a strong
connection with gang and drug related crimes. Due to the seriousness of crimes, low public opinion and community cries for help this matter because
highly urgent. The mayor of Baltimore City Shelia Dickson and Governor O Malley wants the amount of violent crimes decreased drastically. I have
chosen 6 departmental units to help assist with the influx of crimes and they are as followed. Patrol police, homicide, sex crimes, gangs, narcotics/vice
and crimes against person departments.
Community Police department is a systematic approach that allows police to immediately answer or respond to any concerns of the community.
These police officers are the front line of duty and are positioned all around respected areas. Their typical job duties consist of providing public safety
by maintaining order. They respond to emergencies, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws. Identify, pursue, and arrest suspects and perpetrators

Improving the Image of the Police Department
The police department in the United States has confronted various testing new issues for the last one year or so. It is apparent that law enforcers in the
United States work in different regions with diverse populations. Notably, globalization remains as one of great threats to the American economy.
American business environment has responded to this matter by expanding differing qualities in the work environment. In addition, increasing the
differing qualities of the workforce is a typical response to globalization, and one that has ended up being fruitful as more organizations use it.
For the last one year, there have been many high profile complaints against the department of police. People have been accusing the police department
of using excessive force, insensitivity, and mishandling service calls. On the other hand, the electronic media and local print have been championing

Leading up to the establishment of the Chicago Police Department, the first rank of "constable" was created in 1830. Authorization of Chicago's very
own police force occurred on January 31, 1835. On August 15, 1835, the Chicago Police Department was born. The department's mission reads, "The
Chicago Police Department, as part of, and empowered by, the community, is committed to protect the lives, property, and rights of all people, to
maintain order, and to enforce the law impartially. We will provide quality police service in partnership with other members of the community. To
fulfill our mission, we will strive to attain the highest degree of ethical behavior and professional conduct at all times." Orsemus Morrison was elected
Chicago's first constable; he was assisted by Constables Luther Nichols and John Shrigley. The three men served and protected a population of about
3,200. In the year 1837, the Municipal Court of Chicago was created. It had co–jurisdiction with the Cook County Court within corporate limits of the
city of Chicago. Between the years 1838 and 1854, the Chicago P.D consisted of very few collection of officers, constables, and part–time night
watchers to maintain the quickly–expanding city. On December 5th, 1853 Constable James Quinn became the first officer killed in the line of duty at

The definition of adverse impact is "the overall impact of employer practices that result in significally higher percentages of members of minorities
and other protected groups being rejected for employment, placement, and promotion." (Gary Dessler, page 503) Adverse impact plays a huge role in
some companies and usually results in court cases and trials, with legal expenses adding up very quickly. The Baltimore Police Department seems to be
in hot water with the city. It appears that within the police department, adverse impact is present. Even though the Baltimore Police Department may

There should be a higher number of African Americans on the police force since the population pool of African Americans applicants is extremely
high in Baltimore. Also, there are only 29 Asian employees out of 2,455. In the city of Baltimore, the percentage of Asian people who live there is
2.30%.
These examples of an inverse impact could negatively affect the benefits of having police departments that have similar characteristics of the population
in that district. For instance, females and minorities may be important for undercover work in the area. Minorities who live in the area may also bring
knowledge about the neighborhood that can make them better officers.
When recruiters are hiring someone for a job, they look at their resume to see what type of experience the potential employee has and what they can

The Police Department Of Whittier
The police department of Whittier began in April 1917 and their primary objective is to maintain the upkeep and protect the community. In 2001,
Chief David M. Singer took oath to take upon the leadership of the department. Prior to his new role, he came onboard with years of law enforcement
experiences and held the position of Chief of Signal Hill. Singer implemented public service area policing and created a system where it held the police
department accountable to resolving neighborhood problems. According to City of Wittier, "Department History" (2015) Singer has implemented the
first ever injunction against street gangs like "Whittier Varrio Locos" and added numerous technology such as thegraffiti tracker system, automatic
license plate hunter and remove cameras in high risk locations. Graffiti has been an ongoing issue in Whitter because of the ongoing recurrence. In
an interview with Lieutenant Ellis (personal communication, September 28, 2015) he states when an area looks vandalized, more vandalism
happens and called this the "broken window theory". This shows the ongoing recurrence of graffiti in Whittier and action is taken almost
immediately the day of or after. The city of Whittier is broken down into four years, which are called "Police Service Areas". In the interview with

The report has presented overwhelming statistical evidence to support this conclusion. BPD stops over 500 pedestrians per every 1,000 African
Americans and only under 200 pedestrians for every 1,000 Caucasian Residents. A solution to this issue would be to have a diverse/variety of
officers employed under the Baltimore Police Department. Diversity should not merely be based on race but on the background as well. BPD should
only assign officers to work in a jurisdiction where they are familiar with the residents and the demographics of the area. For example, if an area is 90%
African American and is known for high drug trafficking, an officer from a county with majority white residents and only a discriminatory point of
view on African Americans should not be assigned to work in this area. It is important that officers familiarize themselves with the area they are
policing because it will give them a certain level of understanding and aid in determining how they should approach situations. Also, officers should be
able to honestly express when they are an assigned to an environment where they do not feel comfortable. Keeping the lines of communication open
between police officers and administration is very important. Officers should be able to perform their duties in a comfortable environment

Police Brutality In The New Orleans Police Department
Introduction The New Orleans Police Department is an organization that struggled long before Hurricane Katrina made landfall in August of 2005.
Many residents feared the department and some would say that "the department was infected by a culture of discrimination, abuse, and lawlessness"
(Ramsey, 2015). Beginning in the 1980's, police brutality became a major issue in the city, which still continues now, almost 12 years later. During the
aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, it seemed that the situation was only worse. Residents of New Orleans were experiencing even higher levels of police
brutality and with not much control over the city, there appeared to be no form of relief coming any time soon. However, in May of 2010, the

Seeing the vast amounts of corruption, The Department of Justice issued an investigation in 2010. After reviewing the investigation for a year, The
Department of Justice documented a "158–page report on the state of the department" (Ramsey, 2015). The report included the "unconstitutional
conduct and violation of federal law in several areas" (Ramsey, 2015). Later, in January 2013, the Department of Justice issued a decree to reform
their department. In 2009, the Office of the Independent Police Monitor was created to create a way for civilians to share information. In 2014, the
police department became the first to use body cameras, which made it the first department to do so (Ramsey, 2015). Police Chief Harrison says, "All
of it working at the same time is turning us now into a model police department. We were slow moving getting started but we're feeling traction and
momentum now going forward" (Ramsey, 2015). Another organization modeled to help reduce the corruption of the police department and fight for
reform is 'Safe Streets, Strong Communities.' The founder, Yvette Thierry is a relative of one victim of the unjustifiable shootings shortly after Katrina.
Their hard work helped push for the investigation into the department. While the decree mainly focused on the corruption circulating through the
officers, it also focused largely on the canine unit.

training got kennel cough and was sidelined for a while, but I was able to see the technology of future K–9 work. Officer Wescott has been working on
a better way to lift K–9's into attics with a claw–like pulley system. I learned that K–9 unit although sounds like fun to every animal loving person is
not what it is all cracked up to be. Caring for a patrol K–9 can be demanding, training consistently, and you are likely to change partners a few time, but
you will always have a partner. I was able to work with detectives one night after a stolen car was recovered along with a juvenile and young adult.
The biggest part of this experience was that once you take somebody into an interrogation room they sing like a cannery. The interrogation was over
just as fast as it started. I was able to attend two trainings with the special operations group (SOG).

Organizational Culture In The Police Department
Organizational culture refers to the values, assumptions and behaviors shared by people who work within an organization. These attributes impact the
general behavior of people within the organizations in many dimensions. Each organization's culture is unique to it and it governs the acceptable and
unacceptable behaviors of its members (Turner, 1998). In dealing withcriminal justice ethics, organizational culture may influence the level at which
ethics would be applied. Additionally, when handling matters ofpolice misconduct, ethics are likely to be compromised. This assertion is due to some
organizational cultural practices practiced by most police departments. For instance, when dealing with misconduct within the police department, the ...

Sometimes, one may be exposed to being overworked through as a means of revenge tactics long after the guilty senior has served his punishment.
There are many ethical and moral considerations that should be made before taking any decision. The most important one is to know that one has all
the facts before he chooses the avenue of the reporting the officer to the seniors. These facts may include records, pictures, physical objects and any
other piece that may be used to back up the report. The other consideration to be made is to ensure that the decision would be in tandem with the law.
Therefore, before exploring any avenue, one has to ensure that he there is no law that prevents him from proceeding in that direction. The other
consideration to be made is the ethical consideration of ensuring that one does not tarnish, the reputation of the department or organization where he
works. This means that one has to exploit all the possible and required procedures before going public in cases of misconduct. Criminal justice
organizations should tackle police misconduct by first understanding the causes of misconduct. Usually the base of misconduct stems from the
management structure. Misconduct is more likely to be caused by workers higher in the rank than those lower. The other base of misconduct is brought
about as a result of organizational culture. Therefore, criminal justice organizations should deal with such cases creating awareness at the two bases. In

The Advancement of Police Departments
Intro Policing is a field that is forever advancing. Different police departments are using different technologies to combat more sophisticated criminals.
Criminals now a days do not have to be in your presence to steal from you or attack you, criminals can steal your information over the Internet as well
as bully/harass you through social media. What I will be looking at are the different methods police departments use to deter and stop crime. These
technologies include things such as social media, body cameras, and GPS vehicle pursuit darts. Are these items helping or hindering police, as well as
how does the public feel about the implementation of this technology.
Background In an article by CNN about how Police are using social media sites as crime fight tools. The article states "We leave small clues about
our lives all over the Internet like fingerprints." The article talks about a man named Melvin Colon who is facing charges of murder, along with
weapons and drug related crimes. His page was private, however a friend of his on Facebook gave police access to Colon's private information.
Which showed incriminating posts, references to past crimes, and photos that showed gang affiliation. Other ways police use these sites are by creating
fake profiles to befriend the suspect to view their private information or authorities can request private information from social networks with subpoenas
or warrants. These techniques are growing popular in different police

The Pros And Cons Of The Police Department
Police departments across the country and their actions of their employees have been scrutinized a lot lately in the media. Not only the way their
employees behave but the way they recruit potential employees. Police officers take an oath to protect the communities that they serve in and uphold
the constitution no matter what race, gender or ethnicity. With that being said, police officers should also be made up of people of different genders,
races, and ethnicities.
I am currently employesd at the Hollywood Police Department in Hollywood, Florida. As a department, we are made up of approximately 346 sworn
police officers and 259 non–sworn civilian employees. Out of those 605 employees, 23 are black, 246 are Hispanic, and the rest are white. There
aquates to abpproximately 4 percent black employees, 40 percent Hispanic and 56 percent white employees. Out of these, 76 percent of the employees
are male and 24 percent are female.
These numbers are very lopsided and uneven seeing as through the city of Hollywwod is composed of approximately 50 percent white, 25 percent
black and 25 percent Hispanic citizens. I belive that the police department should mirror or closely morror the community.
In my opinion, the department is doing a poor job in diversifying its employees. There should be more of an effort by the department to aggressively
recruit different races.
There is one main thing that hinders the recruitment in the police departments and that is the racial

Police: Breakdowns that allowed corruption are still uncorrected, study finds. The chief concedes that mediocrity became a way of life at all levels of
the department. The Los Angeles Police Department failed time and again to take steps that might have headed off the worst corruption scandal in its
history, according to a sweeping self–indictment prepared by the department's own leaders. In a letter accompanying the long–awaited Board of Inquiry

Some of those issues, as well as others identified in the report, are hardly new.
Police critics have been complaining for more than a decade that the LAPD ignores civilian complaints about officer misconduct. Under Parks, the
department recently revamped its procedures for evaluating citizen complaints, but the report makes it clear that the department's unwillingness to take
officer misconduct seriously continued well into the 1990s, long after the Christopher Commission, the American Civil Liberties Union and others had
pointed to the problem. In 1998, the LAPD's leadership announced that it had fulfilled nearly all

In Oakland, California residents voted by margin of 82 percent to approve a "measure that will establish an independent police commission to oversee

is a result of the police scandals associated with the department this year, including sexual misconduct involving several officers and the teenage
daughter of a police dispatcher, racist text message exchanges between officers and the resignations or firings of several police chiefs. Oakland

Corruption In The Police Department
A single bullet being fired can start a riot, spike racial tension, or even as extreme as ending a career. Police corruption is an abuse of authority by an
officer for personal gain. This would mean accepting bribes, extortion, or any other illegal activity that involves profit. This term could also refer to
patterns of misconduct throughout the department where there are repeat offenses that officers have failed to correct. Every police department is to
establish a code of conduct for their employees, new hires, undercover detectives, or any other officer within the department. When hiring new
candidates, many agencies avoid hiring those who have low ethical standards and have identified them as not being ones to embrace the department 's
integrity. There has been research done on new methods for the hiring process for their psychological tendency to act ethically (Martin, 2011). People
are hired as police officers to serve and protect their country or as simple as their community. Police officers should not be participating in illegal
criminal activity and still consider themselves officers of the law.
Police corruption became widespread after the formation of the first American police departments in the 1800s. Employment could only be guaranteed
if the person followed orders of the political parties by protecting illegal activities that were taking place by members of the political party. This
corruption led to further practices that only benefited individual officers

(freedom, equality and justice) of all Americans. Police officers shall perform their duties in a dignified, impartial manner despite race, sex or religion.
Furthermore, police officers must consistently use discretion when rendering moral judgment which is acquired through experience. Subsequently,
personnel should develop quality working relationships with their coworkers in order to perform their duties efficiently and effectively. First–line

An Informal Complaint With The Police Department
Immediately following an adverse interaction with the police, an individual may choose to file a complaint with the relevant police department. Two
different complaint formats, informal and formal, are generally accepted in both countries. An informal complaint offers the least opportunity for
recoverysome relief, as the individual is merely making an oral statement to a responding officer. Further hindering the process is the inherently biased
nature of the forum; an informal complaint is made to a coworker of the violating officer, who may have an interest in suppressing the claim. Studies
indicate that a "code of silence" pervades many police departments, whereby members of a police agency collectively attempt to bury evidence of
wrongdoing. Considering the unlikelihood that a party's informal complaint will receive department recognition, the procedure is typically employed
only where an individual has suffered minor complaints and does not plan to pursue legal relieflitigation.
Beyond informal complaint, a party can also present his claims by way of a formal complaint to the responsible police department. Formal complaints
offer the individual a somewhat stronger channel within which he may present his argument, as the officer's actions are presented in written format,
rather than orally. Although a formal and informal complaint are similarly handled by a police department, where an officer's co–workers receive the
individual's complaint, a written

Police Department Should Be A Police Officer Essay
Officers Safety
As being a police officer becomes more and more scrutinized by the community and media, it is difficult to find citizens to fill these positions. When
a lot of what officers do day to day currently is continuously watched, it makes it hard to please the community and also keep the safety of everyone,
so it is evermore excruciating that officers stay safe. With our ever changing world Police Officers have to keep up as well to learn and adapt to how
the world works to keep everyone and themselves safe. The Greeley Police Department should provide more extensive training on educating officers
to stay safer because it will keep officer safety a priority, understand why they should have body cams and dash cams, and learn to properly deal with
mental health patients.
With choosing the job occupation of being a Police Officer it inherently has its own risks and dangers that come with the title. A routine traffic stop
can be one of many dangers that can lead to tragedy by sometimes not taking the correct precautions for the officer when dealing with a dangerous
situation. One of the many options that an officer can take to be proactive in reducing these situations from going south, is actually, keeping more
space between a suspect fand the officer. "In the 30 years between 1985 and 2014, the trend rose slightly higher. During this period 69.7 percent of

Police Enforcement And The Police Department Essay
Policing the Police
Abstract
There are thousands and thousands of law enforcement agencies in the United States and most of these agencies are local, small to medium sized
agencies. These agencies are tasked to do the dirty work outside of the larger cities and can be relied on heavily by people for the public safety being
sought out. Every agency is different about how they go about handling these allegations regarding police conduct, corruption and the complaints from
citizens. Unfortunately, there is no consistency between all the agencies which is sad. The agency I am writing this paper on is Inglis Police
Department, a police department that was small agency and are no longer in existence as of 2012. The department is no longer in existence because the
city needed funds for other matters and decided to grant Levy County the option to patrol the area. Throughout this paper I will be outlining the process
of how complaints are processed and investigated when they are sent into the department, also touching on the police conduct and corruption that can
take place within the department and what can be improved moving forward to better serve the citizens of the area. Keywords: Conduct, Complaints,
Corruption
Introduction Before we dive into the good stuff, I would like to define some terms that I will be touching base on throughout my paper, one of those
terms being a complaint. A complaint is any formal document that lays out the facts and logical reasons that

A New York Police Department
Picture a woman standing in a subway station in New York City. Her purse is slung over her shoulder as she reads the railway map. A thief
approaches her from behind and snatches the leather handle of her purse from her grip. He dashes away as she helplessly watches him go. The woman
does not call the police or even ask passersby for help. She knows no one will come to her aid, especially not the NYPD. Such a scenario is
shocking and not a little discomforting, especially when placed in the jurisdiction of the nationally acclaimed New York Police Department.
Unfortunately, such scenes of distress began to proliferate in late December of 2014 as the NYPD dramatically reduced the number of arrests made
for petty crimes, such as purse theft. The police used the cutback as a response to a multitude of policy blunders from the office of Mayor de Blasio,
many of which the NYPD considered offensive and inappropriate. Although the mayor's actions doubtless deserve more scrutiny, the police ofNew
York City were devastatingly blind to the ethical implications of their rash decisions. By indulging in an egocentric worldview and morally
disengaging from their decisions, the NYPD gave reign to emotion and released their wrath by endangering the population of their city. According to
the New York Times, the NYPD's disrespect for Mayor de Blasio built gradually as errors and oversights slighting the police accumulated. The mayor's
staff hired a former aid to a prominent religious figure

Multicultural Education In Police Departments
Claim: I think that our police departments and society as a whole would benefit a great deal from the use of multicultural education. After the deaths of
Michael Brown and Eric Garner, our country's distrust for the police has reached a boiling point, and must be addressed immediately. There is much
work to be done when it comes to providing multicultural education to our police departments, but it is definitely vital to rebuilding trust and thriving as
a society.
Evidence: Multicultural education teaches that all students (or people in general) should experience equality. This is regardless of gender, ethnicity, race
, culture, language, social class, sexual orientation, or exceptionality. (Pg. 3 and 20) Police departments are currently acting with preconceived bias
regarding other cultures and ethnicities. Research has shown that even when people claim and believe they have no bias towards others, they may
have implicit bias. This could explain the staggering statistics that show racial prejudice in arrest and incarceration rates. African Americans are almost
four times as likely to be arrested on drug charges, even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The best way to rebuild this trust is to insure that the police are treating everyone fairly and without bias. I think police departments should begin
designing and implementing programs that teach officers and staff about the different cultures they may encounter. These programs should be created
with the help of the local community. These cultures should be examined thoroughly, so the officers may better understand the beliefs and perspectives
of others. Officers also need to attend prejudice reduction training, to help foster more positive attitudes toward other races and cultural groups. It is
important to remember that multicultural education is a continuing process, but it is a process that needs to be started right

Worn Cameras And The Police Department
ody–worn Camera in the Police Department
Xing Huang
Overview of the Policy Issue
Recently, using advanced technologies in law enforcement agencies is becoming a current trend, because the police accountability has been a hot topic
among the general public. It's a relatively difficult choice for some police executives to decide whether to implement the policy of using the body–worn
cameras. The main idea to using the advanced technologies in law enforcement agencies is to help investigate crimes and communicate with the public.
Body–worn cameras are considered as one of the most popular solutions proposed to deal with the racial inequalities and inappropriate use of force
among police. At the meantime, using body–worn cameras can also help the police department to avoid the false claims against the police force as well.
However, policy makers should consider the policy related issues, such as privacy and trust issue, implementation issue and other factors. The privacy
and trust issue leads to some key questions about the nature of the problem of body worn cameras, for example when is appropriate for officer to
record, should notifications given to whom is being recorded, how to ensure the compliance, who has the access to the records, and how long will the
footage be retained. The implementation issue involves with financial cost, community relationships, and internal department affairs. Even though
some states have already deployed the body–worn cameras in the police

The goal of discipline is to produce desirable behavior. This function can be accomplished by encouraging appropriate behavior and punishing
inappropriate or unacceptable behavior. (More & Miller, 2014) As we can see in the case study of the Astonville Police Department there were
some mistakes made as far as supervision goes. Some of the problems discussed could have been avoided had sound judgement and supervision
been accounted for. Too many times officers are left unsupervised which can lead to an array of problems for the officers and the department as we

Their situation went unwatched or supervised and lead to some severe problems. Problems that could be detrimental to the police department and their

Sergeant Williams already knew that FTO Tibbetts was seen as a "ladies man" within the department. This should have been a red flag for the Sergeant
as he himself viewed Officer Roberts as "an attractive young woman". The sergeant in this case thought that the officer would be able to handle FTO
Tibbetts' advances and be a professional. I'm sure he also thought that FTO Tibbetts would be professional. This, however, was not the case.
Sergeant Williams did not monitor the training that was going on and did not see a problem until it was already too late. Knowing what he did in
the beginning, Sgt. Williams should have assigned Officer Roberts to another FTO. Sergeant Williams should have seen the signs of a possible
romantic relationship going on between Officer Roberts and FTO Tibbetts. Officer Roberts received high marks for her evaluations, even after she
was cleared and released on her own she would rely solely on FTO Tibbetts for advice and back up, rumors were going around the department about

History Of Rocklin Police Department

  • 1. History Of Rocklin Police Department History of Rocklin Police Department Thirty miles east of California's State Capitol lies a unique town called Rocklin. This small town which was originally known as "Secret Ravine" originated in 1860, with a population of 440 and is recognized throughout history for its rock quarries and railroads. According to Roy Ruhkala (1974) Rocklin built its first city jail in the middle of the 1880's, and was crafted of granite, with a small steel window and door. Each night a watchman patrolled the streets and approximately every evening at 8:00pm a curfew bell would ring, warning all vagrants to leave town and notify children to get home. Gary Day (2003–2016) claims the jail was intended to house criminals, but in the early 20th century, it became a place for hobos to escape the long cold nights; however, there was one stipulation, they had to be locked up for the night for fear they would steal the bedding. In 1946 a young boy named Ernest Willard became Rocklin's first chief of police, his father George was the town marshal. Every morning on his way to school, Ernest would go by the Jailhouse to let the hobos out. This haven for hobos was an act of compassion and community service that will forever be remembered. Earnest Willard passed away in 1987 at the age of 90, but in 1983 he served as an honorary marshal in the Rocklin Jubilee parade, at the time he still possessed a key to the original jail house. • 2. The Incident Of The Platteville Police Department The ride along occurred on March 2nd of 2016, with the Platteville Police Department. The ride along itself was done by a female police officer, known as Sierra Vessels with her badge number being 913. The time of the ride along was during one of the non–busier times, as it occurred from 2pm to 6pm. The reason for choosing the Platteville Police Department was because during the time of establishing the ride along my driver's license was suspended. The only transportation that I had was either my parents or my legs, so I decided on my legs. Coming into the ride along there was nothing to my knowledge as to how exactly law enforcement was accomplished. Other than being in traffic incidents the job itself was always a question to me as what they do over all. Doing the ride along in a small town meant that it would not be as eventful as doing it with a bigger department. This did not in fact stop the idea of broadening my knowledge about the daily duties that a law enforcement officer goes through. After the ride along I can say that they should be appreciated more often, as they are only doing their job by keeping everyone safe, and enforcing the law in order to prevent terrible accidents. The female officer that took me on the ride along was very friendly so I had the chance to ask multiple questions. Her experience level was small as she had only been a police officer for six months. She received her bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Colorado State University. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Police Department Creating An Environment Is the US Police department creating an environment in where it is allowed to wrongly use police force? I would agree. In most cases along with many documentaries, alleged crimes like these are not always properly addressed by the Justice Department, sometimes even being shrugged off by the system. In my own simpler words I feel as if this is almost unfair. For those who might not know what this common, yet almost unrecognizable crime among officers is simply when authorities abuse of their power, causing grave problems throughout the different communities across the country to which must be immediately addressed by the system. Along with this particular social issue, it is mandatory to suggest a few ideas on how the government can further prevent predicaments like this. Such as the idea of small miniature cameras placed on the shirt/jackets of the members of the Police department. Another prevention would be that thorough investigations involving excessive research in background history about the suspect and victim in such cases must be rechecked by other individuals from higher ranking as well as not related to the crime. Finally the amount of expenses that the government has to pay every year in order to undergo investigations in these cases are around the millions to billions giving

  • 6. The Welasco Police Department Law enforcement is one of the three major components of the criminal justice system of the United States, along with courts and corrections. It operates primarily through governmental police agencies. Enforcement purposes of these agencies are the investigations to the courts, and the temporary detention of suspended criminals pending judicial action. Police officers work in partnerships with the communities they serve to maintain law and order, prevent crime, reduce the fear of crime and improve the quality of life for all citizens, and protect the members of the public and their property. The Weslaco Police Department has eleven divisions. It has a great patrol division and community policing division. One of the department's goals is to be more involved with the community, parents, and children. Similarities that the Weslaco Police Department and the textbook "An Introduction to Policing", are the hiring and recruiting process. Almost every police department in the United States works the same way in that process. Many police departments require that applicants be high school graduates and with a certain number of college hours. Applicants must be at least twenty–one years of age and U.S. citizens. In some departments weight and height are not important. Since most police departments fall under the civil service regulations, all applicants must pass written tests that measure their analytical skills. Applicants must also pass a physical exam. Provide a list. * Patrols serve many functions for police work. Some commonly used methods of patrol include: * Random Patrol * Directed Patrol * Aggressive Patrol * Saturated Patrol * Random Patrol consists of officers patrolling areas in a random way so that patterns cannot be detected. Random patrols are designed detect crimes taking place and to deter crimes from taking place due to officer patrol presence. Directed patrol is designed to target hot spots or areas known from high crime rates. A saturated patrol is effective by placing a large number of patrols within the same areas. The most common form of police patrolling is with an automobile (Grant & Terry, 2012). Automobile patrols have an advantage because they can cover a large area faster than other means of ... (minimum 250 words) The two main paths in life no matter how complicated or hard it can get will always be defined into two sections. These are the people who will follow the written laws and try to live life according to them, or those who chose to break the law and live according to their own code of principles that are not agreed upon by the established framework of society. The best thing about this choice is the fact that whether you're a law–abiding citizen, police officer, construction worker, politician, or any career that you find suits your abilities as a person will always be under... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The simple answer to it is because, the department needs to stay on–top of crime. The long and drawn out answer is that, the nature of police work do not only apply in the United States, but all over the world need to replace ineffective styles and methods of policing with more advanced, sustainable, timely, and sophisticated improvements to not only eliminate crime, but allow for better response times and better preparation for future disasters. Without any sort of improvement within the department we would still be stuck on a small township model from the days of the Ancient Romans which as we all know, wouldn't achieve a single goal if we kept that model into the modern ages. Time changes, and so should our department in how we handle situations. Every day crime gets more and more advanced in how it operates and what it extorts. With the increase of availability in electronic goods, this has not only expanded criminal networks on a global scale, but rapidly drove up possible victims who can now be tormented, robbed, etc done over a screen. Without continuous improvement within the police department, we would not be able to properly track and deter these criminals and protect the victims who otherwise would live in torment because we're ill equipped to handle these new threats. • 10. The Militarization Of American Police Departments I chose to do this second paper on the militarization of American police departments. This will lend to the thesis Greg and I intend to submit for our final presentation – so we are beginning our research now. As discussed in class, the militarization of police departments is leading American police departments – city or small towns – to act like occupational forces. This is due to several different factors ranging from the availability of weaponry and tanks, to the training of the police departments, to the accessibility of locating crime by advanced surveillance and tracking systems. To further our exploration, Greg and I chose two episodes of the HBO show Vice to watch and elaborate on. For our final presentation we will incorporate these as well as a book Greg has read and some interesting research we will find online. Not only is the militarization of police departments a controversial subject, the consequences of such a transition of our police is detrimental to many. The episode of Vice, and something we are all aware of and have discussed extensively in our courses, reference that the consequences are felt far more severely on the African American population and in low income areas. The two episodes of vice interview several different people about the effects this has on them individually and their communities. These effects, in turn, lead to lack of faith in law enforcement. The first episode of Vice is titled "Surveillance City" and takes place is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Research Report On The Boston Police Department 7.Ongoing Research Work Introduction The second part of the research is focused on studying the emotions and sentiments expressed by people who retweeted the Boston Police Department (BPD) tweets. The goal of this phase was to observe the sentiment among the users who were retweeting the BPD tweets. We wanted to observe the impact of BPD tweets on the users before they retweeted the BPD tweet and after they retweeted. By doing this we wanted to capture the shift in sentiment among the users, which would give us the impact of BPD tweet. In order to do the above analysis, the tweets of those users who had retweeted the BPD tweet were collected. Topsy API was used to collect the historical tweets for the time duration (April 15th 2013 19:50... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The next step was to observe the sentiment among the users, before and after they had retweeted. We aggregated the 'before' set for all users corresponding to a particular tweet and generated a set of 145 files. Similarly we generated a set of 145 files for 'After' set as well. Then we used LIWC to generate the sentiment score for files corresponding to each BPD tweet. Thus for each of the 145 BPD Tweet, we generated sentiment score of 'before' and 'after', and so we have 290 rows of data as an output by LIWC. When we request Topsy for 200 retweeters of a particular BPD Tweet, we got a random sample of 200 retweeters. For some of these users, the retweets were outside our time interval of consideration. Therefore the number of users considered is not the same across all BPD tweets, it is always a number less than 200. Therefore we added 2 new columns for analysis, the number of users considered and the total number of tweets considered. Later we divided the BPD tweets into two segments 1. Incident related (The tweets by BPD which spoke about the incident and things related to it) 2. Informational (The tweets by BPD which were sent out to public about the road being blocked or about parking related etc.). The reason for dividing into 2 segments was to further observe the difference of impact on users by these tweets, with the help of sentiment scores generated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Police Department Roles and Functions Police Department Roles and Functions CJA/214 September 20, 2012 Scott Mann Roles and Functions The Police Department must serve many roles and purposes so they also must take care of any issues that arise, dealing with the law or public safety. For this reason they have different specialized concentrations of officers designed to carry out certain functions. This also varies according to jurisdiction where there are state, local and even federal jurisdictions. This also affects what are their basic roles while doing patrol work or carrying out the specialized detail for whatever function they need enforced. In the United States the mission of law enforcement is to maintain the public safety, by reducing the occurrence of crimes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Criminal investigation is also performed as a function of a patrolling officer if they are the first responder to a scene of a crime, they need to secure the scene, gather evidence and provide emergency assistance, but only a small amount of time is actually spent doing this. Understanding or predicting crime and partnering with community organizations solve and avoid social problems. Patrol officers also need support services such as their dispatch, training and human resources; these help maintain an internal organization that is efficient and effective for officers. (Schmallenger, 2011) Conclusion The Police Department serve many roles and purposes in the community as previously discussed and in doing so they efficiently take care of issues that arise in the public concerning their safety. The specialized concentrations of officers and their functions for crime prevention and patrol deter criminal activity. Jurisdiction does not bound any criminal so there are many different law enforcement agencies to help with these issues and conduct investigations to enforce laws based on these special needs. The United States mission of law enforcement is to maintain its public safety and with so many agencies, trained officers and ever evolving goals; they do reduce the crime occurrence ... • 13. The Police Department Is A Systematic Approach Baltimore City has seen an influx in violent crimes consisting of homicide, sexual assaults and robbery. It's also noted that there is a strong connection with gang and drug related crimes. Due to the seriousness of crimes, low public opinion and community cries for help this matter because highly urgent. The mayor of Baltimore City Shelia Dickson and Governor O Malley wants the amount of violent crimes decreased drastically. I have chosen 6 departmental units to help assist with the influx of crimes and they are as followed. Patrol police, homicide, sex crimes, gangs, narcotics/vice and crimes against person departments. Community Police department is a systematic approach that allows police to immediately answer or respond to any concerns of the community. American business environment has responded to this matter by expanding differing qualities in the work environment. In addition, increasing the differing qualities of the workforce is a typical response to globalization, and one that has ended up being fruitful as more organizations use it. Authorization of Chicago's very own police force occurred on January 31, 1835. On August 15, 1835, the Chicago Police Department was born. The department's mission reads, "The Chicago Police Department, as part of, and empowered by, the community, is committed to protect the lives, property, and rights of all people, to maintain order, and to enforce the law impartially. We will provide quality police service in partnership with other members of the community. To fulfill our mission, we will strive to attain the highest degree of ethical behavior and professional conduct at all times." Orsemus Morrison was elected Chicago's first constable; he was assisted by Constables Luther Nichols and John Shrigley. The three men served and protected a population of about 3,200. In the year 1837, the Municipal Court of Chicago was created. It had co–jurisdiction with the Cook County Court within corporate limits of the city of Chicago. Between the years 1838 and 1854, the Chicago P.D consisted of very few collection of officers, constables, and part–time night watchers to maintain the quickly–expanding city. In 2001, Chief David M. Singer took oath to take upon the leadership of the department. Prior to his new role, he came onboard with years of law enforcement experiences and held the position of Chief of Signal Hill. Singer implemented public service area policing and created a system where it held the police department accountable to resolving neighborhood problems. According to City of Wittier, "Department History" (2015) Singer has implemented the first ever injunction against street gangs like "Whittier Varrio Locos" and added numerous technology such as thegraffiti tracker system, automatic license plate hunter and remove cameras in high risk locations. BPD should only assign officers to work in a jurisdiction where they are familiar with the residents and the demographics of the area. For example, if an area is 90% African American and is known for high drug trafficking, an officer from a county with majority white residents and only a discriminatory point of view on African Americans should not be assigned to work in this area. It is important that officers familiarize themselves with the area they are policing because it will give them a certain level of understanding and aid in determining how they should approach situations. The most important one is to know that one has all the facts before he chooses the avenue of the reporting the officer to the seniors. These facts may include records, pictures, physical objects and any other piece that may be used to back up the report. The other consideration to be made is to ensure that the decision would be in tandem with the law. Criminals now a days do not have to be in your presence to steal from you or attack you, criminals can steal your information over the Internet as well as bully/harass you through social media. What I will be looking at are the different methods police departments use to deter and stop crime. These technologies include things such as social media, body cameras, and GPS vehicle pursuit darts. Are these items helping or hindering police, as well as how does the public feel about the implementation of this technology. Background In an article by CNN about how Police are using social media sites as crime fight tools. The article states "We leave small clues about our lives all over the Internet like fingerprints." The article talks about a man named Melvin Colon who is facing charges of murder, along with weapons and drug related crimes. His page was private, however a friend of his on Facebook gave police access to Colon's private information. Which showed incriminating posts, references to past crimes, and photos that showed gang affiliation. • 25. The Pros And Cons Of The Police Department Police departments across the country and their actions of their employees have been scrutinized a lot lately in the media. Not only the way their employees behave but the way they recruit potential employees. Police officers take an oath to protect the communities that they serve in and uphold the constitution no matter what race, gender or ethnicity. With that being said, police officers should also be made up of people of different genders, races, and ethnicities. I am currently employesd at the Hollywood Police Department in Hollywood, Florida. As a department, we are made up of approximately 346 sworn police officers and 259 non–sworn civilian employees. Out of those 605 employees, 23 are black, 246 are Hispanic, and the rest are white. There aquates to abpproximately 4 percent black employees, 40 percent Hispanic and 56 percent white employees. Out of these, 76 percent of the employees are male and 24 percent are female. These numbers are very lopsided and uneven seeing as through the city of Hollywwod is composed of approximately 50 percent white, 25 percent black and 25 percent Hispanic citizens. I belive that the police department should mirror or closely morror the community. In my opinion, the department is doing a poor job in diversifying its employees. There should be more of an effort by the department to aggressively recruit different races. There is one main thing that hinders the recruitment in the police departments and that is the racial ... • 31. Corruption In The Police Department A single bullet being fired can start a riot, spike racial tension, or even as extreme as ending a career. Police corruption is an abuse of authority by an officer for personal gain. This would mean accepting bribes, extortion, or any other illegal activity that involves profit. This term could also refer to patterns of misconduct throughout the department where there are repeat offenses that officers have failed to correct. Every police department is to establish a code of conduct for their employees, new hires, undercover detectives, or any other officer within the department. When hiring new candidates, many agencies avoid hiring those who have low ethical standards and have identified them as not being ones to embrace the department 's integrity. There has been research done on new methods for the hiring process for their psychological tendency to act ethically (Martin, 2011). People are hired as police officers to serve and protect their country or as simple as their community. Police officers should not be participating in illegal criminal activity and still consider themselves officers of the law. Police corruption became widespread after the formation of the first American police departments in the 1800s. • 33. An Informal Complaint With The Police Department Immediately following an adverse interaction with the police, an individual may choose to file a complaint with the relevant police department. Two different complaint formats, informal and formal, are generally accepted in both countries. An informal complaint offers the least opportunity for recoverysome relief, as the individual is merely making an oral statement to a responding officer. Further hindering the process is the inherently biased nature of the forum; an informal complaint is made to a coworker of the violating officer, who may have an interest in suppressing the claim. Studies indicate that a "code of silence" pervades many police departments, whereby members of a police agency collectively attempt to bury evidence of wrongdoing. Considering the unlikelihood that a party's informal complaint will receive department recognition, the procedure is typically employed only where an individual has suffered minor complaints and does not plan to pursue legal relieflitigation. Beyond informal complaint, a party can also present his claims by way of a formal complaint to the responsible police department. Formal complaints offer the individual a somewhat stronger channel within which he may present his argument, as the officer's actions are presented in written format, rather than orally. With our ever changing world Police Officers have to keep up as well to learn and adapt to how the world works to keep everyone and themselves safe. Every agency is different about how they go about handling these allegations regarding police conduct, corruption and the complaints from citizens. Unfortunately, there is no consistency between all the agencies which is sad. The agency I am writing this paper on is Inglis Police Department, a police department that was small agency and are no longer in existence as of 2012. The department is no longer in existence because the city needed funds for other matters and decided to grant Levy County the option to patrol the area. A thief approaches her from behind and snatches the leather handle of her purse from her grip. He dashes away as she helplessly watches him go. The woman does not call the police or even ask passersby for help. She knows no one will come to her aid, especially not the NYPD. Such a scenario is shocking and not a little discomforting, especially when placed in the jurisdiction of the nationally acclaimed New York Police Department. Unfortunately, such scenes of distress began to proliferate in late December of 2014 as the NYPD dramatically reduced the number of arrests made for petty crimes, such as purse theft. The police used the cutback as a response to a multitude of policy blunders from the office of Mayor de Blasio, many of which the NYPD considered offensive and inappropriate. Although the mayor's actions doubtless deserve more scrutiny, the police ofNew York City were devastatingly blind to the ethical implications of their rash decisions. By indulging in an egocentric worldview and morally disengaging from their decisions, the NYPD gave reign to emotion and released their wrath by endangering the population of their city. According to the New York Times, the NYPD's disrespect for Mayor de Blasio built gradually as errors and oversights slighting the police accumulated. • 37. Multicultural Education In Police Departments Claim: I think that our police departments and society as a whole would benefit a great deal from the use of multicultural education. After the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, our country's distrust for the police has reached a boiling point, and must be addressed immediately. There is much work to be done when it comes to providing multicultural education to our police departments, but it is definitely vital to rebuilding trust and thriving as a society. Evidence: Multicultural education teaches that all students (or people in general) should experience equality. This is regardless of gender, ethnicity, race , culture, language, social class, sexual orientation, or exceptionality. (Pg. 3 and 20) Police departments are currently acting with preconceived bias regarding other cultures and ethnicities. Research has shown that even when people claim and believe they have no bias towards others, they may have implicit bias. This could explain the staggering statistics that show racial prejudice in arrest and incarceration rates. African Americans are almost four times as likely to be arrested on drug charges, even ... I think police departments should begin designing and implementing programs that teach officers and staff about the different cultures they may encounter. These programs should be created with the help of the local community. These cultures should be examined thoroughly, so the officers may better understand the beliefs and perspectives of others. Officers also need to attend prejudice reduction training, to help foster more positive attitudes toward other races and cultural groups. It is important to remember that multicultural education is a continuing process, but it is a process that needs to be started right ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It's a relatively difficult choice for some police executives to decide whether to implement the policy of using the body–worn cameras. The main idea to using the advanced technologies in law enforcement agencies is to help investigate crimes and communicate with the public. Body–worn cameras are considered as one of the most popular solutions proposed to deal with the racial inequalities and inappropriate use of force among police. At the meantime, using body–worn cameras can also help the police department to avoid the false claims against the police force as well. However, policy makers should consider the policy related issues, such as privacy and trust issue, implementation issue and other factors. The privacy and trust issue leads to some key questions about the nature of the problem of body worn cameras, for example when is appropriate for officer to record, should notifications given to whom is being recorded, how to ensure the compliance, who has the access to the records, and how long will the footage be retained. • 40. Evaluation Of The Police Department The goal of discipline is to produce desirable behavior. This function can be accomplished by encouraging appropriate behavior and punishing inappropriate or unacceptable behavior. (More & Miller, 2014) As we can see in the case study of the Astonville Police Department there were some mistakes made as far as supervision goes. Some of the problems discussed could have been avoided had sound judgement and supervision been accounted for. Too many times officers are left unsupervised which can lead to an array of problems for the officers and the department as we saw in this case. This stems from the top supervisors all the way down to the street officers. The Astonville Police Department seems to be a great place to work and seems to have a... Looking at the above reference scenario, we can say that Sergeant Williams did not take the appropriate actions to protect everyone involved. Sergeant Williams already knew that FTO Tibbetts was seen as a "ladies man" within the department. This should have been a red flag for the Sergeant as he himself viewed Officer Roberts as "an attractive young woman". The sergeant in this case thought that the officer would be able to handle FTO Tibbetts' advances and be a professional. I'm sure he also thought that FTO Tibbetts would be professional. This, however, was not the case. Sergeant Williams did not monitor the training that was going on and did not see a problem until it was already too late. Knowing what he did in the beginning, Sgt. Williams should have assigned Officer Roberts to another FTO. Sergeant Williams should have seen the signs of a possible romantic relationship going on between Officer Roberts and FTO Tibbetts. Officer Roberts received high marks for her evaluations, even after she was cleared and released on her own she would rely solely on FTO Tibbetts for advice and back up, rumors were going around the department about the two being seen kissing, and he himself saw them in a heated argument. All of these were opportunities for Sergeant ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
