2. Internet
• The internet is a global network of computers,
providing an assortment of information and
communication services
3. Domain Names and IP Addresses
• An IP Address is the unique serial
number given to a computer with the
internet
• It is used for identification purposes
• A domain name is the name given to
this IP address to make it easier to
identify for humans
• For example: A car has a number
plate, but instead of identifying what
car you own by its number plate, you
would tell someone else what make
your car is to identify it
4. Data Packets
• Packet data is how data is being transferred over
the internet
• When data is being transferred, it is broken
down into smaller chunks, called, in order to
make it easier to transport, and is recollected
again once it has reached its destination
• This is known as packet switching
5. Routers
•Routers determine where to send
information from one computer to
another
•They ensure that information
makes it to the intended
destination, and that information
doesn’t go where it isn’t necessary
•It joins two networks, ensuring
that information is passed safely
from one to the other
