2. Telecommunications
❖ Telecommunication is
communication of information by
electronic means (digital data,
video, audio transmissions)
❖ Components: computers to
process information, terminals
(input/output), communications
processors and softwares
❖ Main functions: transmit
information, establish interface
between sender and receiver, route
messages, perform processing of
information and editorial tasks,
convert message speed and
format, control information’s flow
3. Types of signals: Analog VS Digital
❖ Analog signal: continuous
waveform, passes through
communications medium,
used for audio, video and
voice communications
❖ Digital signal: discrete
waveform, transmits data
coded into two discrete
states as 1-bits and 0-bits,
used for data
communications
4. Method of conversion: analog to digital
Modem - converts
computer’s digital
signals into analog and
visa versa
5. Communication channels
❖ Wired transmission:
• Twisted wire: Telephone systems
• Coaxial wire: Cable television
• Fiber optics and optical networks: dense wave devision
multiplexing (DWDM)
❖ Wireless transmission: microwave, satellites, paging
systems and etc.
❖ Transmission speed: baud, bandwidth
6. Communication processors and software
❖ Frond-end processor: manages communications for
the host computer
❖ Concentrator: collects and temporarily stores
messages
❖ Controller: supervises communication traffic
❖ Multiplexer: enables single communication channel to
carry data transmissions
7. Network topologies
❖ Star network
❖ Bus network
❖ Ring network
❖ Local Area Networks (LAN) (own dedicated channels,
gateway, router and etc)
❖ Wide Area Networks (WAN) (large geographical
distance, microwave and etc)
9. Main concepts
❖ The Domain Name system is a hierarchal distributed naming system
for computers, services or any resource connected to the Internet or a
private network. Translates domain names meaningful to humans.
❖ Push technology refers to the style of internet-based communications,
where the request for a given transaction is initiated by the publisher or
central server
❖ Content Management System (CMS) is a system providing a
collection of procedures used to manage work flow in a collaborative
environment
❖ Main functions of CMS: maintaining security; managing objects,
servers, auditing; maintaining reports.
