Teen Television Dram The Next Generation, By The Bell And...
Every television show falls into one genre or another. Whether its an Action, Comedy, Drama,
Adventure show, they all fall into the category of different types of television genres. The concept of
a genre can be used in "rhetoric, literary theory, media theory and more recently linguistics, to refer
to a distinctive type of 'text'" (Chandler, 1). Thus, every aspect of television exhibits a reliance on
genre in which becomes a principal factor of framing texts which support comprehension.
Throughout this essay, I will focus specifically on the genre of Teen TV Drama using the television
show Degrassi: The Next Generation, and comparing it to two other programs such as Saved by the
Bell and Beverly Hills of 90210. Through this notion, we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Presently, there are many iconic television shows that draw on the generic identity of teen drama for
instance, "Degrassi: The Next Generation."
Linda Schuyler and Kit Hood's, Degrassi: The Next Generation. Degrassi is known to be a very
popular television show that first started in the 1980's. It is a franchise of five television shows that
focus on the lives of young teenage students. Some of Degrassi franchise includes the kids of
Degrassi Street, Degrassi junior high, and Degrassi classic. However, in 2001, there was a new
addition of Degrassi that was premiered, Degrassi: The next generation. During its eight seasons, the
viewers kept up with numerous different regular teenagers who go to school at Degrassi High school
and learn to juggle school while being able to maintain a social life and basically just trying to fit in
and finding their place in the world.
Looking back to these three popular shows, we are able to discuss the central genre of teen drama.
However, when examining the three teen drama television shows, there are many focal points that
must be considered. As chandler mentioned before, genre is known to be a distinctive type of "text."
However, there are a number of things that must be considered when analyzing a genre. Not only do
we study the text, but also the creators and producers of the text, the effect the text has

Teenage Maturity In Adulthood
We all love it when we see a teen going out of there way to help someone,we love it because this
teen just has something about themselves that stands out from other teens. It almost seems like this
kid is an adult, but that's not right it's just that this kid is very mature. We all love it when someone
is mature especially when this someone is a teen because it always seems like teens are lacking in all
common sense. As teens are struggling to figure out who they are, they are learning about maturity,
and how it affects them. Parents are watching their teens struggle to discover their path, they are
wondering why this generation is so behind and lacks the early signs of maturity. To begin, the
youth of our day are missing many signs of maturity. Tim Elmore in the article, The Mark of
Maturity, says, " This generation of kids is advanced intellectually but behind emotionally." Tim
Elmore is pointing out that modern teens are not very mature, but what is maturity? First off, Tim
says, "There's a portion when the child part of the brain has been pruned, but the adult portion is not
fully formed." Tim is trying to say that most teens aren't very mature because their brains haven't
fully advanced past the stage of a child into a fully formed adult. In the article, The Mark of
Maturity, time Elmore give some signs of early maturity here's a few; able to keep long–term goals,
has spirit and humility, unshaken by flattery or criticism, express gratitude, prioritize others above

To Be True to Yourself in a World That Is Constantly...
To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly making you something else is a great achievement
All of us possess qualities that differentiate us from other human beings. These distinguishing
features could be more or less highlighted in appearance, mindset or capabilities, but they will
always persist and determine the nature of our personality. Unfortunately these characteristic
attributes are deteriorating as humanity is moulding us into the "perfect person" influencing us to
stray away from who we are (our so called "insignificant" selves) to what is desirable (a flawless
model). Staying true to yourself means to stick to what you believe in and being whom you were
meant to be, it means not sacrificing who you are to fit in with ... Show more content on

According to Anastasia Goodstein, from Huffington Post, "80 percent of girls have purchased an
item as a result of an ad in a teen magazine and 63 percent trust magazine ads." As a result girls
become convinced that they require particular fashions to belong in a society that emphasizes
materialism. Moreover, most of the fashion, diet and lifestyle advice is directed toward being
desirable to men. Magazines stress sexuality as a central identity, minimizing all other attributes.
The girls reading teen magazines begin to digest and trust the message that they are only sexual
objects.
Peer pressure is the influence exerted by a social group or an individual, encouraging other persons
to change their attitudes, values, or behaviours in order to conform to group norms. Peer pressure is
most commonly associated with youth, in part because most youth spend large amounts of time in
schools and other fixed groups that they do not choose and are seen as lacking the maturity to handle
pressure from friends. Peer pressure can also have positive effects when people are pressured toward
positive behaviour, such as volunteering for charity or excelling in academics or athletics, by their
peers. However Risk taking behaviour is seemingly the most common as these same people engage

Female Supers Essay
There is no secret that the demand for female #superheroes is on the rise. From #WonderWoman's
success at the box office (We love you, #PattyJenkins!) to the upcoming #Batgirl, fans are coming
out in force.
Even before WonderWoman, #YoungJustice helped to launch female supers into a male dominated
world.
Young Justice evenly uses its male and female characters. Within the first season of the show, there
are only two main female heroes. During Season 2, additional female characters were added.
Let's take a good, long look at the female characters in Young Justice that kicked butt.

Analyzing an Advertisement for a Texas Instruments Calculator
Get your own. These words literally speak for themselves when it comes to the Texas Instruments
calculator: TI–83+ silver edition. "Get your own" is the title that appears at the top of the
advertisement for the TI–83+ silver edition. The title is reemphasized by a group of teenagers
pictured below the title. The teens pictured in the photo are all playfully trying to get their hands on
the coveted TI–83+ silver edition–graphing calculator. Directly below the picture of the teens, is a
graphic of an enlarged graphing calculator, and displayed on the screen of the calculator is the new
phonebook feature. Then, to the right of the graphic are three short phrases that reemphasize ...

Teens, or girls in general read this magazine, and by placing an ad such as this in the magazine
would generally boost sales. Another aspect of this ad that would commonly appeal to the teen age
group would have been the choice of colors, and the background of the advertisement.
As far as background goes, historical background is also relatively important in the relevance of the
TI–83+ silver edition graphing calculator advertisement. Teens have many choices when it comes to
graphing calculators, so that is probably why the author chose to include a feature that not all
calculators have. The phonebook feature would appeal greatly to the viewer, hence its purpose. This
particular feature, the phonebook, would be of importance because in the past no calculator
including all other Texas Instruments calculators has offered such a feature.
The Texas Instruments advertisement also allows the viewer to make assumptions in relation to the
pictures and text displayed on the page. These assumptions could be anything from the approximate
cost of the tool, to the pondering of the ray of colors used in the composition of the calculator itself.
These different conjectures are made due to the actual composition of the advertisement itself.
Then comes the purpose of the advertisement. The advertisement is presented to show the viewer
what a unique tool the TI–83+ silver edition is, and what new features are included in the calculator.
Another purpose of the

Semiotic Analysis of Teenage Magazine Front Covers
Siân Davies
In this essay I will hope to analyse the semiotic codes of the front covers of teenage magazines to
demonstrate how the media constructs the image and behavioural ideology of the teenage girl. I will
analyse issue 359 of More! (December 27 th 2001 – January 8th 2002) and compare it with the
January 2002 edition of 19. I have chosen these specific texts as they are popular mainstream
magazines that are available in most newsagents, and therefore arguably represent to the reader what
constitutes the modern teenage girl. These are also the most recent issues available for analysis and
therefore demonstrate an up–to–date representation of constructed femininity in our media and
society.
Jonathan Bignell (1997) argues that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These assumptions pervade the contents of mainstream teenage magazines, with features such as
"Position of the Fortnight" and "Celebrity Hair Special" frequently appearing within the pages. This
is the reader to whom most teenage magazines cater – they broadcast to a stereotypical mass (which
is arguably an artificial representation and does not reflect the identities and lives of all teenage
girls). In order to analyse the image and behavioural ideology of the teenage girl offered within
teenage magazines, I will attempt to investigate some semiotic codes within More! and 19.
The front cover is an important aspect of the magazine as it initially attracts the reader and is a taster
of what can be seen within the contents of the magazine. It is an "important advertisement" and
"serves to label its possessor" (McLoughlin 2000: 5). This is certainly a factor that influences the
purchasing behaviours of young teenage girls who attempt to appear more mature and more sexually
knowledgeable by buying a magazine aimed at girls 4 or 5 years their senior. The front cover will
also promise that "the contents of the magazine... will fulfil the needs of the individual and her
group" and sells a "future image" of the reader as "happier, more desirable" (Bignell 1997: 67). By
merely looking at the front cover of a magazine therefore, a potential reader will be able

The Media and Body Image Essay
Mass media is designed to reach large audiences with technology. Its purpose is meant to give us
entertainment and information we need to act as a society. Media is everywhere; there is no escaping
from it. Almost every home in America has at least one TV, the internet, and a cell phone. You
cannot drive down the street without seeing billboard signs. Checking out at the grocery store can be
tricky if trying to avoid magazines. There are more forms of media available today then ever before;
consequently, teens are exposed to a lot of information. The media is supposed to portray what is
normal; therefore, it affects what society considers normal. Teens are much more impressionable
then adults. What the media tells them is normal affects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In reality the media is not showing the real picture of the diverse world we live in. According to the
online recourse Common Sense Media, 74 percent of characters on TV are Caucasian, and 64
percent of video games characters are males. In reality most of the images teens see in the media are
edited, photo shopped, or enhanced with special effects. Even though a teen may be aware of this
fact, seeing the stereotyped image still has an affect on their body image. Often teens are not being
educated about sex; therefore, are learning about if from porn, or other forms of media. The
encouragement of sexual behavior is widely displayed in the media. Sex is being portrayed as more
casual, without commitment, contraception, or consequences. Teen dramas and music videos portray
the cool kids as the ones have sexual relations. The casual attitude about sex has sparked a new trend
involving cell phones called Sexting. This is when a teen takes a nude photo with their mobile phone
and sends it to another mobile phone. It is against the law to view and distribute child porn; because
teens are minors, sexting is considered just that. Sexting is very dangerous, because teens
unknowingly set themselves up for a criminal record. The internet is becoming a very popular place
to meet and make friends. MySpace and Facebook have become very popular social websites. Teens
feel pressure to portray themselves in seductive ways, to be like the teens

Religion And Teen Views Of Gay Marriage
People who attend church regularly will be more likely to be opposed to homosexual relations, all
else being equal. Religion and views on homosexuality are closely linked. As Amy Adamczyk and
Cassady Pitt note in their research, "Shaping attitudes about homosexuality: The role of religion and
cultural context," "religion is often seen as an important predictor of attitudes about homosexuality."
The reason for this is because some people believe views on homosexuality are written into the
Bible, and that this provides evidence with which to justify discrimination against homosexuals.
Therefore, regularly attending church not only implies a strong affiliation and deeply held beliefs,
but constant exposure to these views. Not all religions profess the same views on homosexuality, but
the most popular one, the Catholic Church, tends to hold negative views on the subject. Albert L.
Winseman's paper "Religion Colors Teen Views of Gay Marriage" has also looked into this
relationship, except this focuses explicitly on youth views.
Research Design In order to retest this hypothesis, I will be using data from the GSS (General Social
Survey) 2012 dataset. The unit of analysis will be individual people. Specifically, there will be an
examination of people's church attendance, while controlling for educational status and political
views to see how church attendance may be correlated with views on homosexual sex. There will be
1,163 units that will be studied. I will be

Cultural Destruction Essay examples
Cultural Destruction
American pop culture can readily been seen in many aspects of American life. "Pop" was originally
coined to mean "popular." While this literal meaning still holds true, pop culture has spun into a new
generation. While pop still describes what is popular, the term has taken on a negative connotation.
Today, the term is used to describe bands such as the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync. Britney Spears
has also been coined as a pop singer. The term pop is often seen as a downfall and indicates
temporary fame. Many pop artists are thought to be just that: pop artists. They do nothing more than
achieve their five minutes of fame and then move on. Pop culture is destroying the greatness of
American culture and putting the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Teenage boys do not care that Britney Spears is completely constructed through plastic surgery. The
American music industry forces music into popularity based on trivial, vain criteria instead of true
talent.
Music used to convey true emotions and ideas but the music industry has destroyed these truths in
the music. Music used to have meaning and expression. The lyrics of pop songs simply convey the
empty emotion. Bottum writes, "The problem begins with the general failure of lyrics, the incapacity
of sung words to introduce and maintain in music the ideas the music itself lacks" (Bottum). The
producers are more concerned with how the words flow with the music instead of the actual content
of the lyrics. The music industry creates a certain sound from the music but the content is not really
important. American pop culture is the intended audience of this music and so the music industry
feeds them the empty songs with a pretty face. If a person has ever had a song stuck in their head,
odds are that they do not really know what the words mean. They merely regurgitate the hottest
chorus from the newest pop song without really knowing the meanings of the words. We have
destroyed the truth in our music by allowing ourselves to succumb to the music industry's ideas of
pop culture and pop music itself.
The music industry produces these monstrosities that we call pop artists and then forces the

Perk Of Being A Wallflower, And The Perks Of Being A...
To the average American teenager, high school may have seemed like a real–life nightmare. So why
is it that so many movies today revolve around this hellish concept? According to David Denby, the
author of "High–School Confidential: Notes on Teen Movies", there is a whole genre of these teen
films. As explained by Denby, such genre films include stereotypical male and female villains of the
social queen or jock type, mixed up emotions and teens rising above the "poisonous system of
status, snobbery and exclusion" that is commonly known as high school (Denby 367). By this
definition, the film The Perks of Being a Wallflower can be categorized as a teen film. Based on the
book published in 1999, The Perks of Being a Wallflower follows Charlie ... Show more content on

However, for the majority or teens, there is a considerable amount of teen angst that comes from this
emotional growth. When depicted in movies, Denby explains that "these films arise from
remembered hurts which then get recast in symbolic form." (Denby 369). In Denby's example, the
main character may have suffered from the death of a parent and thus "is ill equipped for the
emotional pressures of school." (Denby 369). This can be seen to be incredibly true for the main
character of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Through out the film, there are memories brought up
from Charlie's past about his best friend's suicide, his Aunt's Death, and his past sexual abuse. For
example, when Sam kisses Charlie and rubs his leg, Charlie gets flashbacks of a similar situation in
which his adult Aunt sexually abuses him. Due to his past, Charlie is depicted as unable to cope with
the problems he faces, through his actions over the course of the film. Charlie takes a passive role in
his life. For example, when his sister is abused by her boyfriend, Charlie does not step in. He also
doesn't speak up when Mary Elizabeth declares that she and Charlie are dating, though he clearly
doesn't have any interest in her. From the audience's point of view, it is known that his passive
actions are a result of his emotional problems. However, as explained by Denby, "the motherless
child also has powers and will someday be a

Essay about The Aesthetics of Pop Music
"It All Sounds The Same These Days!"
In just about every home in America at just about any given time the words: "It all sounds the same
these days!" is uttered to a teenage child, while the mother is screaming "Turn it down!" in the
background. The teenager storms to his bedroom and turns the radio up to full volume and thinks,
"They just don't get it!" Then proceeds to dance around the room singing into the hairbrush. This is
the pleasure principal of pop music. Whether accredited to innocence or ignorance, a unreconciled
naivety has survived this culture since its inception. They're everywhere. We cannot escape the
wrath of teen pop bands, you can love 'em or hate 'em, but they are a representation of an ever
changing culture. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Attributing to another frequently heard phrase "I don't even like that song and I know all the words!"
How can the aesthetics of pop music be measured? From person to person tastes in music differ
greatly and the effect that music has on ones self can be very abstract, so how can the aesthetics of a
classification of music, pop, that is: simple, predictable and repetitious be measured? The most
obvious way to measure aesthetics would be personal opinion, then scaled to public opinion and in
turn, economic market value. One's personal opinion, although often times thought to be objective
when one is defending a favorite song it is difficult to measure an exact aesthetic value of a song.
Why is it that so many cringe at the mere mention of the Spice Girls or Britney Spears? If pop music
is a reflection of current culture, and is taken as just pure enjoyment and fun, meaningless lyrics and
feel good music, any scientific or musically theoretical measurements should be dismissed. Onelike?
would be more successful embracing the lightheartedness of the song and, in turn, embracing the
emotions that it provokes. During the short lived "career" of the Spice Girls there was a influx of

the teen drama.
This concept of the teen drama is not a foreign one, and there is something about teens with insane,
over–dramatic lives that has everyone hooked.
It all started in 1990, when the first show to ever be classified as a teen drama was put into our

girl next–door who without intention mixes up the love interests, and the other boy friend who is

Superhero Comparison Essay
Superhero Compare and Contrast Why are Deadpool and Deathstroke so similar? Marvel and DC
have both discretely plagiarized character ideas for decades. It seems a writer can not create an
original idea for a superhero without copying a trait or personality from some other popular
superhero character. When observing a biographical website or article about the newly created

Essay on Censorship in the Music Industry
Censorship in the Music Industry
Censorship in the music industry can be divided into two categories involving new music
technology and music products. In the United States, the issue of censorship doesn't necessarily
concern music products but rather new music technology. The music industry has become
increasingly concerned with the online peer–to–peer services like Kazaa and Morpheus using the
MP3 format or motion pictures expert group which allows users to download music free and fast
(Cloonan, 2003). In almost every other part of the world, music is censored someway or another
usually by a country's government, religious leaders, or individual broadcasters who are financed by
their government (Cloonan, 2003). For example, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This particular type of censorship occurred in South Korea in 1997 when the state radio station KBS
banned teen pop music due to the clothing style the entertainers wore (Cloonan,2003). A more
recent event of censorship occurred in Morocco in March 2003 when 14 heavy metal fans between
the ages of 22 and 35 were convicted and jailed for "acts capable of undermining the faith of a
Muslim" and "possessing objects which infringe morals" (Index Online, 2003). All were sentenced
between 1 to 12 months in jail.
The People's Republic of China is one of the most heavily regulated countries involving music
censorship. The Chinese record industry is controlled by the state government through the
publishing houses which are also owned by the state (Cloonan, 2003). Essentially, publishers decide
to release a music product, arrange the duplication of the master tape, and distribute it throughout
the country. Since all the music appears on the market through a publishing house, the government
has the power to censor music which they deem to be sensitive (Cloonan, 2003). All music is
reviewed by the government in order to check compliance with Article 102 of the Chinese criminal
law which states that it is an offence for any person "to confuse right and wrong, to poison people's
minds, to incite the masses and create chaos, to undermine socialist revolution and construction, and

Vampire Diaries Characters
The T.V show The Vampire Diaries is a CW teen drama series that involves danger, romance, action
and suspense. The show is not just about vampires and werewolves, but it also has other
supernatural elements such as hybrids, witches and vampire hunters. Let's just say that even though
it's compared to the Twilight movies, The Vampire Diaries is an old fashion love story where you
can expect the unexpected. Where the audience can also connect with the character's situations.
Even though it's a fictional show, it involves real life situations that an ordinary person can go
through. The producer Julie Plec did a beautiful job with the plot, the relationship of the characters,
how the show itself connected with the audience, and the setting.

My Favorite Superheros
Ever since I was a little girl I have looked up to and loved superheroes. Most of the superheroes are
from Detective Comics or DC Comics for short (yes, that is Detective Comics Comics.) Nightwing
has been my favorite superhero for as long as I can remember. Obviously, Wonder Woman as well,
she is a big reason why I am a feminist. The Flash has been one of my favorite superheroes since I
was super young. However, I do not care so much for the second Flash, Barry Allen or even the
original Flash, Jay Garrick. I have always preferred the third Flash, Wally West. My favorite Green
Lantern is John Stewart. To me, all of the superheroes in DC Comics are my favorite superheroes,
but those ones stand out the most to me. Not Marvel, they suck. Nightwing. Dick ... Show more

Soon after the adoption of the nine year old boy, he became Batman's first sidekick to use the name
"Robin." The first time I ever seen Dick Grayson was when I was around three years old in the
anime–styled cartoon titled, Teen Titans. I absolutely adored that show and I still do. However,
looking back on it and rewatching episodes, they really made him be a lot like Batman, which is fine
if you do not know the comic book character because I did not at the time. His character in the
comics is definitely different than how they portrayed him in the show. He is more outgoing than
Batman and is very sarcastic. He will talk to his enemies and distract them that way. He is not a
depressed boy in a costume trying to scare people, that is Batman. To me, Batman just does not have
any personality compared to Robin. I just wish they would have portrayed him better than they did.
Anyhow, after years of being Robin, Dick Grayson wanted to be an independent superhero. At age
eighteen, he made that happen by getting an all new suit that was all black with a blue bird on it
(unless we are talking about the original Nightwing suit because that was light

Teens And Mtv's Unrealistic Beliefs On Teen Pregnancy
Research article authors Nicole Martins and Robin E. Jensen, intended to study the relationship
between MTV's series "Teen Mom" reality show and teenagers' unrealistic beliefs about what is like
to be a teen mom. The seven motivations for asking "why" are used to convince the audience that it
is worthy of research by exploring the relationship with the intentions to discredit the previous
findings that state, "Teen Mom" and "16 and Pregnant" is one of the best public service campaign to
prevent teen pregnancy. This topic presents a number of complications in the lives of both induvial
and societal as a whole; providing evidence to answer the readers question on why this topic is of
importance and worthy of research. Yearly, $7 billion are taxed to all U.S citizens for welfare and
healthcare relating to teen pregnancy, driving the United States to the top as the highest rated
country with teen pregnancy. Consequently, almost half of teen mothers are unable to receive a high
school diploma; leading to lower occupation income for both fathers and mothers. I myself have
personally witnessed the toll it takes on one's life from three women who became mothers at a
young age. Many teens are unaware of the high risks and consequences of becoming pregnant or are
in denial of the possibility. Being able to be a part of their journey has increased my belief of the
importance on this topic and related research.
When comparing this article to a good literature review, it successfully provides an adequate
overview of previous research done and uses it to enhance the project at hand. When evaluating the
quality and relevance of this article, Martins and Jensen do an admirable job communicating the
purpose of research to the reader and organizing its literature review. The data from other studies is
in chronological order and are structured from broader studies to more specific ones which is seen
when the sources are cited. An analysis was provided after presenting the findings from previous
studies and the authors were able to communicate how those studies influenced their own research.
As a whole, the literature review was well organized by key ideas and topics that logically lead to
the research Martins and Jensen were

Analysis Of Mean Girls
Teen girl films are Janus–like in nature, being aimed at teen girls themselves, but also at opening up
the world of teen girls to their parents and society at large. The marketing for Mark Water's 2004
film Mean Girls reflects this divided focus, using a two–pronged approach to attempt to attract the
largest range of paying customers. On an aesthetic level, from the appearance of the promotional
website to the music used in the trailers, the film tries is aimed at teenage girls. However, on a less
superficial level, the high–brow humor used in the promotional videos and the written content of the
website, is aimed at adults. Mean Girls is praised for success in spite of genre, and the praise is
focused it's satire and humor. This is indicative of a larger trend in views on teen girl films. A real
teen girl's life may revolve around passing midterms or trying to fit in at school, but a film about
those struggles must views those struggles with humor. The personal drama in the lives of teenage
girls isn't taken seriously by this film or it's marketing, and critics and studios don't think it should
be. At first glance, the theatrical trailer for Mean Girls fulfills all clichés the 'high school' or 'teen
girl' genre. Our protagonist, Cady, is the new girl school, who's been homeschool her entire life. Her
new nerdy friends explain all the cliques of the school to her, including an introduction to each

"Kyle!" the yell coming from Superman accompanies us as we round the hill to see our peer yelp

blast of crimson red emerges from Kyle 's body, enough to startle the two villains and allow him to
soar upwards, away from his captors.
Charging forwards towards Adam, Superman leaves the other to the entire group. Yet, Wonder

managed to pin down Black Adam against the desert floor, allowing the Flash to unleash a flurry of
super–speed punches into the villain 's undefended face. Whether it was a hundred strikes or ten,
they held enough power to shake Adam visibly. Finishing off the cruel being is Martian Manhunter,
thinning out his fingers and probing inside the head of Adam, abruptly knocking him out.
"What did he just do?" I incredulously mutter to myself, jumping down from the arch.
Heading over to where the group is forming around the twitching ragdoll of Count Vertigo, Wally

"Honestly, I have no idea. I thought that I would give it a try." the Martian replies, quite amusingly.

The further 'off the rails' Cassie goes, the more extreme the sexual situations, at one point 'courting'
a female and then a few minutes after the female leaves a male arrives. "Sexuality strongly
influences people's identity." (Op. cit. p.22) And at this point in the series we find that Cassie has a
very mixed up idea about who she is and what she wants.
This can also be seen in Season 1 when Maxxies best friend Anwar refuses to tell his parents about
Maxxies sexuality due to their religious beliefs. We see that Maxxie is torn between who he is and
whom Anwar wants him to be and this puts the friendship under great strain resulting in Maxxie
refusing to turn up to Anwars party. "Gay adolescents who are more conventional in their gender
characteristics have the option of passing as straight and many do." (Op. cit. p. 461) This situation
happens a lot in real life but can be the cause of many problems, both for the person dealing with
feelings of homosexuality and hiding them and those around that person. Many people have
reported having feelings of being 'trapped within themselves' and having pent up aggression due to
being in such a situation, which isn't hard to believe when we think that adolescence is when we
discover ourselves sexually. "Adolescence involves the development of a sense of self and social
identity independent of one's parents (Erikson, 1968; Steinberg 2004). Answering questions about

Examples Of Stereotypes In Teenage Movies
According to Campbell and Kean, teen movies are filled with stereotypes which can be divided into
five categories: jocks, cheerleaders, nerds, goths and stoners (Campbell and Kean 274). For the
purpose of this essay, they will be referred to as princesses (formerly cheerleaders), loners (formerly
goths) and rebels (formerly stoners). In this essay, I will argue that 10 Things I Hate About You does
not have the mentioned stereotypes. In 10 Things I Hate About You the main characters can be
divided into these categories. Kat Stratford is the loner. She is described by Cameron James as "anti
sociable". A student of L. Monique Pittman states "[s]he's harsh and brash and not calm, submissive

herself from her fellow school mates, by outing her dislike of prom and standing up in class because
she does not agree with what the teacher says. Bianca is the princess. Bianca is pretty, which is
confirmed by Cameron and Joey who are both trying to date her. In the beginning of the movie
Bianca is described by Cameron's friend Michael as "conceited", which would argue that Bianca is
self–centered. She is obedient to whatever her father says. For example, when her father says that
Bianca cannot date until Kat does, Bianca is annoyed by this, but accepts it and does not actually
date until Kat does. Patrick Verona is the rebel. He expresses bad boy behavior by smoking, playing
with fire in class and performing a song at the football field, which gets him into detention. There

A Sigh For Cybergenetics By Felica Lamppost
Along with this excitement, however, came skeptics. As the culture of science fiction and
intergalactic worlds grew in popularity, the fear of new technology superseding mankind was also
bubbling up. The overall fear in the 1960s involved man creating Artificial intelligence to the point
where it is too great and mankind becomes subservient to the machine it created. This technophobia

High School Confidential
High school in real life is full of surprises, but according to David Denby in his article "High School
Confidential," High School in the movies is very predictable. The typical Hollywood "High School
Scene" opens with the jock and the cheerleader characters. Blonde and buff, the Jock and the
Cheerleader are superficial and proud to proclaim it. They are popular and perky, and always too
good to be true. The cheerleader is usually the enemy of the hero or heroine. She is generally rich,
blonde, and queen bee of the social circle, with no sense of selflessness. The jock is usually the
bully, muscular, good looking and not very smart.(Denby 343) In an essence, the male counterpart

school so that she can tryout for the male soccer team and show her now ex–boyfriend that girls can

problem is, he thinks she 's a boy. Violet is not your typical movie heroine, in the beginning of the
movie she seemingly has everything a girl could want, however her passion for soccer drives her to
step outside the norm and prove herself. Although the main character in this movie contradicts
Denby 's view of teen movies, there are many other characters in the movie who fall directly in line
with Denby 's theory. For example, Sebastian 's girlfriend Monique is a typical cheerleader type
character. She has no regard for anyone 's life but her own. Also, Violet 's divorced parents are
completely unaware that their son Sebastian is in London playing with a band, and their daughter
Violet is impersonating him in order to play soccer. In retrospect, Denby 's views hold up in
analysis. Occasionally there is a movie or a character that steps outside Denby 's stereotype,
however most teen movies are similar.

High School Confidential : Notes On Teen Movies By David...
The author of the essay "High–School Confidential: Notes on Teen Movies," David Denby, purpose
was to explain the stereotypical high school movie genre. Most teen movies follow certain criteria
that some may feel has little reflection on what high school is truly like while others may feel these
movies are exactly what high school is like. In typical teen movies, there are usually the cool kids,
the popular cheerleader with the jock boyfriend, and that outsider nerd or outcast. Where that cool
kids control the playground and the outcast just try to fit in and be part of the cool clique or stay as
far away as possible and avoid humiliation. The film "Easy A" proves to follow this exact pattern
that Denby speaks of, just as stereotypical as any other teen film.
The movie chosen to be written about was "Easy A" where the director, Will Gluck, directs a film
about a student, Olive Penderghast, who feels bad for those who do not necessarily fit in. Therefore,
she allows them to spread rumors about her and certain sexual exploitations. In doing so she
becomes the school's most talked about student, while jeopardizing her reputation, while at the same
time making some financial gains. She first pretends to lose her virginity to a friend who is too
afraid to come out and say he is gay, causing praise for him and humiliation for her. This rendezvous
begins a whirlwind of endeavors and a chain reaction of situation she would soon regret. Luckily, in
this movie, there is also a

Are Teen Movies Get It Wrong?
Being a young adult, constantly circling the edge of the abyss of adulthood, is one of the most
critically important and talked about moments in a person's life. That's why 'bildungsroman' novels
have their own section in Barnes and Nobles and why teen movies are still one of the most popular
genres: because the transition into adulthood is fascinating. And yet, most acclaimed teen movies get
it wrong. From John Bender's borderline rape–y advances towards Claire in The Breakfast Club and
still getting to kiss the girl to (insert another example), most films that focus around young adults
simply aren't accurate and don't portray the realities of being a young adult. To quote Cher from the

It's as if Enid and Rebecca are attempting to remain suspended in this moment, as if they're trying to
avoid making decisions because they don't know what they want: it is the teenage condition and
they're afraid of making mistakes.
The entire movie feels like something of a documentary, perhaps it's the subtle 90s coloring or the
way Zwigoff chose (insert something about camera angles) or maybe it's because I myself was in an
identical position on the cusp of adulthood nearly three years ago. Ghost World is suburbia,
complete with the strip malls and dinky themed diners. It's hellish for Enid and Rebecca and yet,
they're seemingly stuck. Ghost World is a representation of the entire youth experience, something
out of a teenage nightmare and a universal experience: the yearning to escape and simultaneously
the possibility that you never will, highlighted through Enid and Rebecca's characters. It's an
unspecified location thus it's everywhere. A ghost world is something you carry around with you.
Throughout the film, Zwigoff attempts to make a point of the truth of growing up is difficult; it's
about a desire to fit in while also hating that you care what your peers thing of you. Additional
tension is created with the fact that both Enid and Rebecca internalize their struggles and don't
communicate openly with one another, an all

Stereotypes In Mean Girls
Everyone has had their fair share of high school drama; whether it's rude stares down the hallway,
distant whispering behind your back, spreading rumors about students and faculty, social sabotage,
or segregated school lunch tables. The teen drama film Mean Girls delves into the sociocultural
environment of teenage academia. This two hour film documents how Cady, the new girl from
Africa, starts her first day of public school. Throughout her high school adventures she learns the
social hierarchy and rules created by the students for the students. As she begins to adjust, she
climbs the social ladder and becomes one of the cool kids, or as everyone calls them, "the plastics".
In the article, High–School Confidential Notes on Teen Movies, by David Denby, he claims that the
enemy in teen movies is not the authority figure as many may believe, but rather it is the students
themselves, and the surrounding climate that they create. The film Mean Girls is the perfect example
that show cases Denby's claim through superiority mindsets, social cliques, and lack of parental
involvement.
Some high school students are reserved and get through the day as quickly as possible, while others
take control and claim superiority. They see others as inferiors and make it their mission to
intentionally make others students feel like outcasts. For example, a reoccurring symbol throughout
the film is the burn book, an album filled with rumors and photos of women in the school created by

Comparing Cosmogirl and Cosmopolitan Essay
Comparing Cosmogirl and Cosmopolitan
A comparison between "Cosmogirl" and "Cosmopolitan". Two successful magazines. One woman's'
and one teenage.
Would you read the same magazines as your daughter? Would you expect the contents in a magazine
aimed at women to be diversely different from a magazine aimed at teenagers?
I think that because teenagers are at very different stages of their lives to adults and therefore have
different concerns, issues and perspectives on life, they should have separate influences such as
magazines. Magazines portray a fantasy lifestyle for many people and so they are attracted to, and
influenced by, them.
I am going to investigate the differences and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The "Cosmo" part of the title is in the same font as "Cosmopolitan". This links it to the successful,
well–loved, parent magazine. This automatically gives it credibility and attracts younger audiences
who want to be like the women in "Cosmopolitan" when they grow up. The "girl" part in the title
obviously suggests the target audience and the fact that it differs from "Cosmopolitan". It could also
appeal to a younger audience because "Cosmopolitan" is abbreviated to "Cosmo" for this title and
abbreviating words is a trend amongst young people.
Secondly I am going to look at the next thing you would see after the title, the models. Both models
on "Cosmopolitan" and "Cosmogirl" are female because the audience is female and want a
magazine that can tell them how to look and act and the models are examples. They are around the
expected age of the readers and are maybe what the magazines editors' picture as their ideal reader.
They reflect what the magazine stands for and the position of that age group at the time. For
example, a magazine aimed at eleven to twelve year olds would have a younger model on the cover
and it would be girlier than a magazine aimed at teenagers aged fifteen to seventeen.
In the case of my magazines the cover girls are very attractive but in different ways. The model for
"Cosmopolitan" is aged around twenty whereas the model for

Teenage Stereotypes
"Lazy," "Disrespectful," "Selfish," "Technology Crazed." These are just a few of the words that
come to mind when the typical adult describes the everyday teenager. To some, these descriptions
are taken as a given fact and lack recognition of the issue this poses to the individuals on the
receiving end of such. This is the exact issue present in discrimination and stereotyping. For years, a
specific group of individuals has been reduced to the negative connotations presented against them
by every other group that lacks such quality such as their race, gender, appearance, age ...etc. Every
instance applicable contains the common ground in which the other groups fail to recognize the
harm in their superficial classifications of one another due to narrow–minded tendencies. This is the
basis to every single form of discrimination. An incredibly oppressed group who is by far, no
stranger to these circumstances are teens who continuously receive the hostility of adults for simply
belonging to their age group. Present day teenagers have come to be placed in an inaccurate box that
classifies them as a selfish, immature group by adults due several factors, the most prominent being
the media and the form it introduces teens to the average adult. The constant incorrect portrayal of
teens in movies, t.v. and other platforms has caused adult audiences to believe these classifications
and thus, cause several issues to be inflicted upon teens in several areas of their lives that calls for

implication was that they do not. However, with the internet's advancements and the accessibility of
communication with massive amounts of people, teenagers today can form authentic cultures that
are not contaminated by the corporate media. When the documentary was produced, media exposure

The media chooses to portray and sell sex, violence, drama and role models because it appeals to
teenagers' biological and evolutionary instincts. The excessive amounts of sex hormones being
produced in teenagers boosts libido causing displays of eroticism to be very alluring. Scenes of
action or violence release adrenaline and endorphins for emotional stimulation and teen idols like
NSYNC and Edward Cullen portray the ideal mate for many girls. The music presented is mostly
homogenous and simple to promote familiarity and emotional response. Had these businesses tried

Cool, Rushkoff goes to a teenage party to survey rising trends and notices a strange phenomenon.
The girls dancing in front of his camera seemed to be selling the same exaggerated sex appeal that
corporations were selling to the teenagers. He labeled this sensation a sort of "giant feedback loop"
which implied that, since corporations try to mirror teenage behavior and then pervert that into a
more explicit version to sell back, which in turn causes teenagers to emulate the corporation's
behavior, teenagers are incapable of having a genuine culture to call their own, much like the young

Peer Pressure In Teenage Movies
Bullying and peer pressure are issues that most every student in school has to deal with. Because
this is such a pertinent issue, movies are made based on these problems. This is the teen genre.
Movies from this genre are from a teenagers point of view so they can relate to them. Heathers is a
dark teen movie where the bullies are killed off in an attempt to clean out the school. Peer pressure
and bullying are a necessary part of the teen genre because of how big a part it takes in teen society.
Almost every film genre is based around groups of people who exist in real life. People who are ten
through nineteen make up over one tenth of the earth's population. This creates a demand for films
based upon the issues and hardships they go through. Just like how adults can relate to movies about
people barely making enough money to pay bills or working in a boring office. Who else would be
the antagonist in a teen movie except for bullies or those who peer pressure kids? These seem to be
the biggest problems teenagers face and that is why it is always the issue in teen movies.
Heathers starts off with a group of female teen bullies practically running a school. One of them,
Veronica Sawyer, regrets joining the group because of what she is now involved in. Heather
Chandler, the leader, peer pressures Veronica, who is evidently a great calligraphist, into forging
notes to appear to be from other people. She then uses these notes to make people think someone

You see us as you want to see us –– in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions: a
brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal. Correct?
That's the way we saw each other at 7:00 this morning. We were brainwashed.
The opening scene acts as commentary to a universal struggle: the relationship between teenagers
and their parents. Immediately, they are classified by their stereotypical high school identities which
ultimately analyzes the social class. After the opening credits, the camera focuses on the front of a
Mercedes Benz car, a "swank sedan" (Wood, 1986), framing its logo in close up to emphasise the
wealth of the owner, a character who is successful in Reagan's capitalist America. Claire and her
father are the occupants and her role as the rich popular girl or the princess is immediately
established. Her father's clothes reinforces their wealthy status as he wears a Burberry scarf and a
"Brooks Brothers suit" (Wood 1986). Claire is depicted as pretty, pristine, clean–cut and "exudes an
elite nonchalance"' (Shary, 2002). But her true character is revealed as more complex and infused

The Life Of A Volunteer Job
Barry 's POV
As I woke up from my all night food coma I woke up in my armor and decided to wear a simple
jogging outfit consisting of a wife beater and some dark sweat pants.
As I ran I pondered what I should do in this universe. I ran a couple miles until I ran past a hospital
next to a retirement home. "Smart move there." I backtracked remembering how my father was a
docter and how I always loved helping people.
I made up my mind as I chose to enter the retirement home first to apply for a volunteer job, I
figured that not all of the elderly relish their time left on Earth and some have nothing really left for
them here and wish for the rest they 've earned. So killing two birds with one stone I could work
here and release the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Powering up the phone I activated it and it gave me my number. As I rushed back to the retirement
home I saw Tiffany was gone I signed my phone number and left.
As I walked out my clothes changed to a dark shirt regular leather jacket, jeans and boots. As I
walked the streets of this National City I saw the life flourishing around me until I noticed
something odd. When I saw one person I always saw their life force flowing inside them but on one
person I saw something weird. What I saw was their life force being drained by and small, invisible,
human like creature. In an instant I transformed and dashed over calling out my scythes to slash at it
only for it to vanish before me and the man falling limp into my arms. I laid him down banishing my
scythes but as I stood back up I just narrowly dodged a punch to the face by letting it faze through
me.
As I rushed away I came face to face with... Kara Zor–El better known as Supergirl. As she saw the
collapsed man she put my sudden appearance and his sudden collapsing as my doing, but then I saw
the small human floating behind Supergirl taunting me as I growled in frustration as lightning burst
from me, he began taunting me to catch him. I smirked at this getting into a running position. Then I
looked at the small human mouth something I haven 't heard in a long time.
'Run. Barry. Run. '
As I read its lips my eyes charged with lightning as I took the first step I rocketed fazing through

Teenage Culture And The Normalization Of A Teenage Society
Being a teenager isn't easy. At no point in history has being a teenager ever been easy. Since the
moment you turn thirteen, you are plunged into a world where your thoughts are plagued and your
emotions trap you. Teenage culture has become the normalization of peer pressure, drug and alcohol
abuse, bullying, cliques, etc. Teenagers are the ones who decide who and what is cool or not.
Teenagers create the social boundaries and characteristics that every generation has come to know.
They are the control of the media and have more power than most people are willing to ever realize
or understand. But they are constantly placed in boxes and labeled. Teenagers have become walking
cliches and are treating poorly by many because of that. In the movie, Legally Blonde, the main
character, Elle Woods, is a popular blonde sorority girl who is constantly torn down and criticized
for simply being herself. The movie begins with music playing. The beginning credits show and the
stage is set. The camera shows a desk of perfume and makeup. Suddenly a bunch of fun popular
girls appear on screen. Confusion fills the air of the audience. Minutes pass and we are introduced to
our main character. She is popular and beautiful and... blonde. The audience begins to panic. How
could it possibly be that the main girl is not nerdy and introverted? The audience demands for a
clarification, waiting for her to strike so we can establish her as "villain." The strike never comes.
The audience begins to

Teen Television Dram The Next Generation, By The Bell And...

  • 1. Teen Television Dram The Next Generation, By The Bell And... Every television show falls into one genre or another. Whether its an Action, Comedy, Drama, Adventure show, they all fall into the category of different types of television genres. The concept of a genre can be used in "rhetoric, literary theory, media theory and more recently linguistics, to refer to a distinctive type of 'text'" (Chandler, 1). Thus, every aspect of television exhibits a reliance on genre in which becomes a principal factor of framing texts which support comprehension. Throughout this essay, I will focus specifically on the genre of Teen TV Drama using the television show Degrassi: The Next Generation, and comparing it to two other programs such as Saved by the Bell and Beverly Hills of 90210. Through this notion, we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Presently, there are many iconic television shows that draw on the generic identity of teen drama for instance, "Degrassi: The Next Generation." Linda Schuyler and Kit Hood's, Degrassi: The Next Generation. Degrassi is known to be a very popular television show that first started in the 1980's. It is a franchise of five television shows that focus on the lives of young teenage students. Some of Degrassi franchise includes the kids of Degrassi Street, Degrassi junior high, and Degrassi classic. However, in 2001, there was a new addition of Degrassi that was premiered, Degrassi: The next generation. During its eight seasons, the viewers kept up with numerous different regular teenagers who go to school at Degrassi High school and learn to juggle school while being able to maintain a social life and basically just trying to fit in and finding their place in the world. Looking back to these three popular shows, we are able to discuss the central genre of teen drama. However, when examining the three teen drama television shows, there are many focal points that must be considered. As chandler mentioned before, genre is known to be a distinctive type of "text." However, there are a number of things that must be considered when analyzing a genre. Not only do we study the text, but also the creators and producers of the text, the effect the text has ... • 3. Teenage Maturity In Adulthood We all love it when we see a teen going out of there way to help someone,we love it because this teen just has something about themselves that stands out from other teens. It almost seems like this kid is an adult, but that's not right it's just that this kid is very mature. We all love it when someone is mature especially when this someone is a teen because it always seems like teens are lacking in all common sense. As teens are struggling to figure out who they are, they are learning about maturity, and how it affects them. Parents are watching their teens struggle to discover their path, they are wondering why this generation is so behind and lacks the early signs of maturity. To begin, the youth of our day are missing many signs of maturity. Tim Elmore in the article, The Mark of Maturity, says, " This generation of kids is advanced intellectually but behind emotionally." Tim Elmore is pointing out that modern teens are not very mature, but what is maturity? First off, Tim says, "There's a portion when the child part of the brain has been pruned, but the adult portion is not fully formed." Tim is trying to say that most teens aren't very mature because their brains haven't fully advanced past the stage of a child into a fully formed adult. To be true to yourself in a world that is constantly making you something else is a great achievement All of us possess qualities that differentiate us from other human beings. These distinguishing features could be more or less highlighted in appearance, mindset or capabilities, but they will always persist and determine the nature of our personality. Unfortunately these characteristic attributes are deteriorating as humanity is moulding us into the "perfect person" influencing us to stray away from who we are (our so called "insignificant" selves) to what is desirable (a flawless model). Staying true to yourself means to stick to what you believe in and being whom you were meant to be, it means not sacrificing who you are to fit in with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Anastasia Goodstein, from Huffington Post, "80 percent of girls have purchased an item as a result of an ad in a teen magazine and 63 percent trust magazine ads." As a result girls become convinced that they require particular fashions to belong in a society that emphasizes materialism. Moreover, most of the fashion, diet and lifestyle advice is directed toward being desirable to men. Magazines stress sexuality as a central identity, minimizing all other attributes. The girls reading teen magazines begin to digest and trust the message that they are only sexual objects. Peer pressure is the influence exerted by a social group or an individual, encouraging other persons to change their attitudes, values, or behaviours in order to conform to group norms. Peer pressure is most commonly associated with youth, in part because most youth spend large amounts of time in schools and other fixed groups that they do not choose and are seen as lacking the maturity to handle pressure from friends. Peer pressure can also have positive effects when people are pressured toward positive behaviour, such as volunteering for charity or excelling in academics or athletics, by their peers. However Risk taking behaviour is seemingly the most common as these same people engage in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From #WonderWoman's success at the box office (We love you, #PattyJenkins!) to the upcoming #Batgirl, fans are coming out in force. Even before WonderWoman, #YoungJustice helped to launch female supers into a male dominated world. Young Justice evenly uses its male and female characters. Within the first season of the show, there are only two main female heroes. During Season 2, additional female characters were added. Teens, or girls in general read this magazine, and by placing an ad such as this in the magazine would generally boost sales. Another aspect of this ad that would commonly appeal to the teen age group would have been the choice of colors, and the background of the advertisement. As far as background goes, historical background is also relatively important in the relevance of the TI–83+ silver edition graphing calculator advertisement. Teens have many choices when it comes to graphing calculators, so that is probably why the author chose to include a feature that not all calculators have. The phonebook feature would appeal greatly to the viewer, hence its purpose. This particular feature, the phonebook, would be of importance because in the past no calculator including all other Texas Instruments calculators has offered such a feature. The Texas Instruments advertisement also allows the viewer to make assumptions in relation to the pictures and text displayed on the page. These assumptions could be anything from the approximate cost of the tool, to the pondering of the ray of colors used in the composition of the calculator itself. These different conjectures are made due to the actual composition of the advertisement itself. Then comes the purpose of the advertisement. The advertisement is presented to show the viewer what a unique tool the TI–83+ silver edition is, and what new features are included in the calculator. Another purpose of the ... • 12. Semiotic Analysis of Teenage Magazine Front Covers Siân Davies In this essay I will hope to analyse the semiotic codes of the front covers of teenage magazines to demonstrate how the media constructs the image and behavioural ideology of the teenage girl. I will analyse issue 359 of More! (December 27 th 2001 – January 8th 2002) and compare it with the January 2002 edition of 19. I have chosen these specific texts as they are popular mainstream magazines that are available in most newsagents, and therefore arguably represent to the reader what constitutes the modern teenage girl. These are also the most recent issues available for analysis and therefore demonstrate an up–to–date representation of constructed femininity in our media and society. Jonathan Bignell (1997) argues that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These assumptions pervade the contents of mainstream teenage magazines, with features such as "Position of the Fortnight" and "Celebrity Hair Special" frequently appearing within the pages. This is the reader to whom most teenage magazines cater – they broadcast to a stereotypical mass (which is arguably an artificial representation and does not reflect the identities and lives of all teenage girls). In order to analyse the image and behavioural ideology of the teenage girl offered within teenage magazines, I will attempt to investigate some semiotic codes within More! and 19. The front cover is an important aspect of the magazine as it initially attracts the reader and is a taster of what can be seen within the contents of the magazine. It is an "important advertisement" and "serves to label its possessor" (McLoughlin 2000: 5). This is certainly a factor that influences the purchasing behaviours of young teenage girls who attempt to appear more mature and more sexually knowledgeable by buying a magazine aimed at girls 4 or 5 years their senior. The front cover will also promise that "the contents of the magazine... will fulfil the needs of the individual and her group" and sells a "future image" of the reader as "happier, more desirable" (Bignell 1997: 67). By merely looking at the front cover of a magazine therefore, a potential reader will be able ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. The Media and Body Image Essay Mass media is designed to reach large audiences with technology. Its purpose is meant to give us entertainment and information we need to act as a society. Media is everywhere; there is no escaping from it. Almost every home in America has at least one TV, the internet, and a cell phone. You cannot drive down the street without seeing billboard signs. Checking out at the grocery store can be tricky if trying to avoid magazines. There are more forms of media available today then ever before; consequently, teens are exposed to a lot of information. In reality most of the images teens see in the media are edited, photo shopped, or enhanced with special effects. Even though a teen may be aware of this fact, seeing the stereotyped image still has an affect on their body image. Often teens are not being educated about sex; therefore, are learning about if from porn, or other forms of media. The encouragement of sexual behavior is widely displayed in the media. Sex is being portrayed as more casual, without commitment, contraception, or consequences. Teen dramas and music videos portray the cool kids as the ones have sexual relations. The casual attitude about sex has sparked a new trend involving cell phones called Sexting. This is when a teen takes a nude photo with their mobile phone and sends it to another mobile phone. It is against the law to view and distribute child porn; because teens are minors, sexting is considered just that. Sexting is very dangerous, because teens unknowingly set themselves up for a criminal record. The internet is becoming a very popular place to meet and make friends. MySpace and Facebook have become very popular social websites. Teens feel pressure to portray themselves in seductive ways, to be like the teens ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Religion And Teen Views Of Gay Marriage People who attend church regularly will be more likely to be opposed to homosexual relations, all else being equal. Religion and views on homosexuality are closely linked. As Amy Adamczyk and Cassady Pitt note in their research, "Shaping attitudes about homosexuality: The role of religion and cultural context," "religion is often seen as an important predictor of attitudes about homosexuality." The reason for this is because some people believe views on homosexuality are written into the Bible, and that this provides evidence with which to justify discrimination against homosexuals. Therefore, regularly attending church not only implies a strong affiliation and deeply held beliefs, but constant exposure to these views. Not all religions profess the same views on homosexuality, but the most popular one, the Catholic Church, tends to hold negative views on the subject. Albert L. Winseman's paper "Religion Colors Teen Views of Gay Marriage" has also looked into this relationship, except this focuses explicitly on youth views. Research Design In order to retest this hypothesis, I will be using data from the GSS (General Social Survey) 2012 dataset. The unit of analysis will be individual people. • 20. Cultural Destruction Essay examples Cultural Destruction American pop culture can readily been seen in many aspects of American life. "Pop" was originally coined to mean "popular." While this literal meaning still holds true, pop culture has spun into a new generation. While pop still describes what is popular, the term has taken on a negative connotation. Today, the term is used to describe bands such as the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync. Britney Spears has also been coined as a pop singer. The term pop is often seen as a downfall and indicates temporary fame. Many pop artists are thought to be just that: pop artists. They do nothing more than achieve their five minutes of fame and then move on. Pop culture is destroying the greatness of American culture and putting the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Teenage boys do not care that Britney Spears is completely constructed through plastic surgery. The American music industry forces music into popularity based on trivial, vain criteria instead of true talent. Music used to convey true emotions and ideas but the music industry has destroyed these truths in the music. Music used to have meaning and expression. The lyrics of pop songs simply convey the empty emotion. Bottum writes, "The problem begins with the general failure of lyrics, the incapacity of sung words to introduce and maintain in music the ideas the music itself lacks" (Bottum). The producers are more concerned with how the words flow with the music instead of the actual content of the lyrics. The music industry creates a certain sound from the music but the content is not really important. American pop culture is the intended audience of this music and so the music industry feeds them the empty songs with a pretty face. If a person has ever had a song stuck in their head, odds are that they do not really know what the words mean. They merely regurgitate the hottest chorus from the newest pop song without really knowing the meanings of the words. We have destroyed the truth in our music by allowing ourselves to succumb to the music industry's ideas of pop culture and pop music itself. • 22. Perk Of Being A Wallflower, And The Perks Of Being A... To the average American teenager, high school may have seemed like a real–life nightmare. So why is it that so many movies today revolve around this hellish concept? According to David Denby, the author of "High–School Confidential: Notes on Teen Movies", there is a whole genre of these teen films. As explained by Denby, such genre films include stereotypical male and female villains of the social queen or jock type, mixed up emotions and teens rising above the "poisonous system of status, snobbery and exclusion" that is commonly known as high school (Denby 367). By this definition, the film The Perks of Being a Wallflower can be categorized as a teen film. Based on the book published in 1999, The Perks of Being a Wallflower follows Charlie ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, for the majority or teens, there is a considerable amount of teen angst that comes from this emotional growth. When depicted in movies, Denby explains that "these films arise from remembered hurts which then get recast in symbolic form." (Denby 369). In Denby's example, the main character may have suffered from the death of a parent and thus "is ill equipped for the emotional pressures of school." (Denby 369). This can be seen to be incredibly true for the main character of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Through out the film, there are memories brought up from Charlie's past about his best friend's suicide, his Aunt's Death, and his past sexual abuse. For example, when Sam kisses Charlie and rubs his leg, Charlie gets flashbacks of a similar situation in which his adult Aunt sexually abuses him. Due to his past, Charlie is depicted as unable to cope with the problems he faces, through his actions over the course of the film. Charlie takes a passive role in his life. For example, when his sister is abused by her boyfriend, Charlie does not step in. He also doesn't speak up when Mary Elizabeth declares that she and Charlie are dating, though he clearly doesn't have any interest in her. From the audience's point of view, it is known that his passive actions are a result of his emotional problems. In just about every home in America at just about any given time the words: "It all sounds the same these days!" is uttered to a teenage child, while the mother is screaming "Turn it down!" in the background. The teenager storms to his bedroom and turns the radio up to full volume and thinks, "They just don't get it!" Then proceeds to dance around the room singing into the hairbrush. This is the pleasure principal of pop music. Whether accredited to innocence or ignorance, a unreconciled naivety has survived this culture since its inception. They're everywhere. Attributing to another frequently heard phrase "I don't even like that song and I know all the words!" How can the aesthetics of pop music be measured? From person to person tastes in music differ greatly and the effect that music has on ones self can be very abstract, so how can the aesthetics of a classification of music, pop, that is: simple, predictable and repetitious be measured? The most obvious way to measure aesthetics would be personal opinion, then scaled to public opinion and in turn, economic market value. One's personal opinion, although often times thought to be objective when one is defending a favorite song it is difficult to measure an exact aesthetic value of a song. Why is it that so many cringe at the mere mention of the Spice Girls or Britney Spears? If pop music is a reflection of current culture, and is taken as just pure enjoyment and fun, meaningless lyrics and feel good music, any scientific or musically theoretical measurements should be dismissed. • 32. Essay on Censorship in the Music Industry Censorship in the Music Industry Censorship in the music industry can be divided into two categories involving new music technology and music products. In the United States, the issue of censorship doesn't necessarily concern music products but rather new music technology. The music industry has become increasingly concerned with the online peer–to–peer services like Kazaa and Morpheus using the MP3 format or motion pictures expert group which allows users to download music free and fast (Cloonan, 2003). In almost every other part of the world, music is censored someway or another usually by a country's government, religious leaders, or individual broadcasters who are financed by their government (Cloonan, 2003). For example, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This particular type of censorship occurred in South Korea in 1997 when the state radio station KBS banned teen pop music due to the clothing style the entertainers wore (Cloonan,2003). A more recent event of censorship occurred in Morocco in March 2003 when 14 heavy metal fans between the ages of 22 and 35 were convicted and jailed for "acts capable of undermining the faith of a Muslim" and "possessing objects which infringe morals" (Index Online, 2003). All were sentenced between 1 to 12 months in jail. The People's Republic of China is one of the most heavily regulated countries involving music censorship. The Chinese record industry is controlled by the state government through the publishing houses which are also owned by the state (Cloonan, 2003). Essentially, publishers decide to release a music product, arrange the duplication of the master tape, and distribute it throughout the country. Since all the music appears on the market through a publishing house, the government has the power to censor music which they deem to be sensitive (Cloonan, 2003). All music is reviewed by the government in order to check compliance with Article 102 of the Chinese criminal law which states that it is an offence for any person "to confuse right and wrong, to poison people's minds, to incite the masses and create chaos, to undermine socialist revolution and construction, and to achieve the final goal of overthrowing the people's ... Consequently, almost half of teen mothers are unable to receive a high school diploma; leading to lower occupation income for both fathers and mothers. I myself have personally witnessed the toll it takes on one's life from three women who became mothers at a young age. The marketing for Mark Water's 2004 film Mean Girls reflects this divided focus, using a two–pronged approach to attempt to attract the largest range of paying customers. On an aesthetic level, from the appearance of the promotional website to the music used in the trailers, the film tries is aimed at teenage girls. However, on a less superficial level, the high–brow humor used in the promotional videos and the written content of the website, is aimed at adults. Mean Girls is praised for success in spite of genre, and the praise is focused it's satire and humor. This is indicative of a larger trend in views on teen girl films. Many people have reported having feelings of being 'trapped within themselves' and having pent up aggression due to being in such a situation, which isn't hard to believe when we think that adolescence is when we discover ourselves sexually. "Adolescence involves the development of a sense of self and social identity independent of one's parents (Erikson, 1968; Steinberg 2004). • 49. Examples Of Stereotypes In Teenage Movies According to Campbell and Kean, teen movies are filled with stereotypes which can be divided into five categories: jocks, cheerleaders, nerds, goths and stoners (Campbell and Kean 274). For the purpose of this essay, they will be referred to as princesses (formerly cheerleaders), loners (formerly goths) and rebels (formerly stoners). In this essay, I will argue that 10 Things I Hate About You does not have the mentioned stereotypes. In 10 Things I Hate About You the main characters can be divided into these categories. Kat Stratford is the loner. She is described by Cameron James as "anti sociable". A student of L. In the beginning of the movie Bianca is described by Cameron's friend Michael as "conceited", which would argue that Bianca is self–centered. She is obedient to whatever her father says. For example, when her father says that Bianca cannot date until Kat does, Bianca is annoyed by this, but accepts it and does not actually date until Kat does. Patrick Verona is the rebel. As the culture of science fiction and intergalactic worlds grew in popularity, the fear of new technology superseding mankind was also bubbling up. The overall fear in the 1960s involved man creating Artificial intelligence to the point where it is too great and mankind becomes subservient to the machine it created. • 55. High School Confidential High school in real life is full of surprises, but according to David Denby in his article "High School Confidential," High School in the movies is very predictable. The typical Hollywood "High School Scene" opens with the jock and the cheerleader characters. Blonde and buff, the Jock and the Cheerleader are superficial and proud to proclaim it. They are popular and perky, and always too good to be true. The cheerleader is usually the enemy of the hero or heroine. She is generally rich, blonde, and queen bee of the social circle, with no sense of selflessness. The jock is usually the bully, muscular, good looking and not very smart.(Denby 343) In an essence, the male counterpart of the cheerleader. The Jock and the Cheerleader are almost ... Violet is not your typical movie heroine, in the beginning of the movie she seemingly has everything a girl could want, however her passion for soccer drives her to step outside the norm and prove herself. Although the main character in this movie contradicts Denby 's view of teen movies, there are many other characters in the movie who fall directly in line with Denby 's theory. For example, Sebastian 's girlfriend Monique is a typical cheerleader type character. She has no regard for anyone 's life but her own. Also, Violet 's divorced parents are completely unaware that their son Sebastian is in London playing with a band, and their daughter Violet is impersonating him in order to play soccer. In retrospect, Denby 's views hold up in analysis. Occasionally there is a movie or a character that steps outside Denby 's stereotype, however most teen movies are similar. ... • 59. High School Confidential : Notes On Teen Movies By David... The author of the essay "High–School Confidential: Notes on Teen Movies," David Denby, purpose was to explain the stereotypical high school movie genre. Most teen movies follow certain criteria that some may feel has little reflection on what high school is truly like while others may feel these movies are exactly what high school is like. In typical teen movies, there are usually the cool kids, the popular cheerleader with the jock boyfriend, and that outsider nerd or outcast. Where that cool kids control the playground and the outcast just try to fit in and be part of the cool clique or stay as far away as possible and avoid humiliation. The film "Easy A" proves to follow this exact pattern that Denby speaks of, just as stereotypical as any other teen film. The movie chosen to be written about was "Easy A" where the director, Will Gluck, directs a film about a student, Olive Penderghast, who feels bad for those who do not necessarily fit in. Therefore, she allows them to spread rumors about her and certain sexual exploitations. In doing so she becomes the school's most talked about student, while jeopardizing her reputation, while at the same time making some financial gains. She first pretends to lose her virginity to a friend who is too afraid to come out and say he is gay, causing praise for him and humiliation for her. This rendezvous begins a whirlwind of endeavors and a chain reaction of situation she would soon regret. Luckily, in this movie, there is also a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Are Teen Movies Get It Wrong? Being a young adult, constantly circling the edge of the abyss of adulthood, is one of the most critically important and talked about moments in a person's life. That's why 'bildungsroman' novels have their own section in Barnes and Nobles and why teen movies are still one of the most popular genres: because the transition into adulthood is fascinating. And yet, most acclaimed teen movies get it wrong. From John Bender's borderline rape–y advances towards Claire in The Breakfast Club and still getting to kiss the girl to (insert another example), most films that focus around young adults simply aren't accurate and don't portray the realities of being a young adult. • 63. Stereotypes In Mean Girls Everyone has had their fair share of high school drama; whether it's rude stares down the hallway, distant whispering behind your back, spreading rumors about students and faculty, social sabotage, or segregated school lunch tables. The teen drama film Mean Girls delves into the sociocultural environment of teenage academia. This two hour film documents how Cady, the new girl from Africa, starts her first day of public school. Throughout her high school adventures she learns the social hierarchy and rules created by the students for the students. As she begins to adjust, she climbs the social ladder and becomes one of the cool kids, or as everyone calls them, "the plastics". In the article, High–School Confidential Notes on Teen Movies, by David Denby, he claims that the enemy in teen movies is not the authority figure as many may believe, but rather it is the students themselves, and the surrounding climate that they create. The film Mean Girls is the perfect example that show cases Denby's claim through superiority mindsets, social cliques, and lack of parental involvement. Some high school students are reserved and get through the day as quickly as possible, while others take control and claim superiority. They see others as inferiors and make it their mission to intentionally make others students feel like outcasts. For example, a reoccurring symbol throughout the film is the burn book, an album filled with rumors and photos of women in the school created by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Would you read the same magazines as your daughter? Would you expect the contents in a magazine aimed at women to be diversely different from a magazine aimed at teenagers? This automatically gives it credibility and attracts younger audiences who want to be like the women in "Cosmopolitan" when they grow up. The "girl" part in the title obviously suggests the target audience and the fact that it differs from "Cosmopolitan". It could also appeal to a younger audience because "Cosmopolitan" is abbreviated to "Cosmo" for this title and abbreviating words is a trend amongst young people. Secondly I am going to look at the next thing you would see after the title, the models. • 67. Teenage Stereotypes "Lazy," "Disrespectful," "Selfish," "Technology Crazed." These are just a few of the words that come to mind when the typical adult describes the everyday teenager. To some, these descriptions are taken as a given fact and lack recognition of the issue this poses to the individuals on the receiving end of such. This is the exact issue present in discrimination and stereotyping. For years, a specific group of individuals has been reduced to the negative connotations presented against them by every other group that lacks such quality such as their race, gender, appearance, age ...etc. Every instance applicable contains the common ground in which the other groups fail to recognize the harm in their superficial classifications of one another due to narrow–minded tendencies. This is the basis to every single form of discrimination. An incredibly oppressed group who is by far, no stranger to these circumstances are teens who continuously receive the hostility of adults for simply belonging to their age group. Present day teenagers have come to be placed in an inaccurate box that classifies them as a selfish, immature group by adults due several factors, the most prominent being the media and the form it introduces teens to the average adult. The constant incorrect portrayal of teens in movies, t.v. and other platforms has caused adult audiences to believe these classifications and thus, cause several issues to be inflicted upon teens in several areas of their lives that calls for ... In the late 1990's when the documentary was made, the implication was that they do not. However, with the internet's advancements and the accessibility of communication with massive amounts of people, teenagers today can form authentic cultures that are not contaminated by the corporate media. Because this is such a pertinent issue, movies are made based on these problems. This is the teen genre. Movies from this genre are from a teenagers point of view so they can relate to them. Heathers is a dark teen movie where the bullies are killed off in an attempt to clean out the school. Peer pressure and bullying are a necessary part of the teen genre because of how big a part it takes in teen society. Almost every film genre is based around groups of people who exist in real life. People who are ten through nineteen make up over one tenth of the earth's population. This creates a demand for films based upon the issues and hardships they go through. Just like how adults can relate to movies about people barely making enough money to pay bills or working in a boring office. Who else would be the antagonist in a teen movie except for bullies or those who peer pressure kids? These seem to be the biggest problems teenagers face and that is why it is always the issue in teen movies. Heathers starts off with a group of female teen bullies practically running a school. One of them, Veronica Sawyer, regrets joining the group because of what she is now involved in. At the end of the film the high school a voiceover of Brian reading out a letter written by him to Mr Vernon, the teacher, effectively embodies the teen process of finding their identity: You see us as you want to see us –– in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions: a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal. Correct? That's the way we saw each other at 7:00 this morning. We were brainwashed.
