Midway, the Battle That Ultimately Doomed Japan in WWII
By: John King Could a loss at Midway have cost America the Pacific, and led to WWII ending in a
different way? The Battle of Midway is know as the turning point of the war in the Pacific. It turned
the tables and put the United States into an offensive position. Midway was one, if not the, most
important battle of World War II because of the background, strategies, battle tactics, and most
importantly the outcome and effects of this battle. "Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 – a date which
will live in infamy – the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval
and air forces of the Empire of Japan." These words were spoken the day after the bombing of Pearl

The U.S. lost one aircraft carrier, the USS Lexington, and the USS Yorktown was severely damaged,
but would make it back to port for repair. These Pacific battles were what led to the Japanese Empire
trying to deliver a finishing blow to the U.S. Navy. The Japanese commander, Admiral Isoroku
Yamamoto was in command of the Japanese Pacific Fleet. The Japanese plan was very simple. First,
they would create a diversion by launching an attack on the Aleutian Islands. Then, they would send
three groups of ships to Midway. One was a group of soldiers to invade the island. The second group
was battleships, the heavy gun power. One of these happened to be the largest battleship in the
world, the Yamato. And finally, the third group contained four big aircraft carriers and their battle
task force. The carriers held a combined 248 planes. They planned to attack and destroy the U.S.
base. This attack would make the U.S. send their carriers to the island to try and save the island.
They would ambush the U.S. carriers and destroy them once they got there. To the Japanese, their
plan was unstoppable because they had three times more ships than the U.S. and the element of
surprise.
Unfortunately for Japan, they made the mistake of under–estimating the U.S. intelligence agency. In
Pearl Harbor, where the war started, the U.S. deciphered the code the Japanese were using to
communicate. They were able to learn very important details that would help incredibly in their

47 ships firing constantly hitting other ships, and planes. This was the battle of Midway the turning

Japan. A battle is taking place in the pacific ocean offshore of Midway, On June 7 1942 about six
months after the bombing of pearl harbor. A battle that not only took place on the ground, but on
water, and in the air.
The immediate cause of the battle of midway, was pearl harbor, when Japan bombed are naval base.
This conflict probably could have been avoided if Japan never bombed us, yet then the U.S. and
Japan were in a fight before the pearl harbor incident. And japan was on the axis forces where we

The invasion of Manchuria was a Japanese invasion that tried to expand japan. When japan attack
china they attacked our oil imports on china. So when embargoed all oil exports in that area, which
led them to attack pearl harbor. Which is the immediate cause of the U.S. joining WWII.
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Events_leading_to_the_attack_on_Pearl_Harbor)This was a
geographic issue.
Another cause that led to the battle of midway is Adolf Hitler. After the bombing of pearl harbor,
Hitler's reaction was an opportunity. If Japan kept the U.S. distracted Germany and Italy could
attack Britain without us sending backup overseas, because 1 Japan was attacking us and, 2 we were
low on ships. Therefore, Hitler saw this as an amazing opportunity. This was a social issue at the
time.
The last and probably most important factor is the bombing of pearl harbor. The bombing of pearl
harbor was important because it brought the U.S. into the war and led japan and us to literally be at
war against each other. Which if it didn't happen, we wouldn't have been going into the war for that
reason. And we probably would have released the embargo after the war was over. Therefore if we
were never even in the war at all the battle of midway cow would have never even happened. This
was a huge Political Factor because it brought us into

The Battle of Midway
The Battle of Midway, one of the most important battles of World War II, took place from June 4,
1942 to June 7, 1942. The battle occurred about five months after the Japanese capture of Wake
Island, and exactly six months after the Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. Before the Battle of Midway,
the Japanese were on the offensive through South–East Asia and the Pacific. The Japanese attacked
Wake Island Pearl Harbor and other atolls, which strengthened their empire and severely damaged
the U.S. Navy. During the Battle of Midway, the Imperial Japanese Navy lost four carriers: Akagi,
Kaga, Hiryu, and the Soryu. After the Battle of Midway, the U.S. Navy was able to make their first
offensive move at the Battle of Guadalcanal. Before the Battle of Midway, U.S. morale was low
because the Japanese were rampaging through the Pacific, but after the Battle of Midway, the Kido
Butai was permanently damaged which meant the U.S. Navy was able to take back the Pacific using
General MacArthur's "Island Hopping" strategy.
The Imperial Japanese Navy was not a force to be reckoned with. In 1939, Japan started to capture
tiny atolls surrounding the island in order to make a perimeter. Japan's Empire started to expand
tremendously because their Imperial Navy was so strong. They were a devastating threat to the
United States because Japan outnumbered the U.S. Navy in soldiers and carriers. Between
December 1941 and the middle of 1942, the Imperial forces took from the Dutch, Americans

The Battle of Midway is known as one of the most miraculous naval battles in modern history. It
was a battle in which the enemy was seen as far superior and near invincible. This would be a battle
fought from the skies with bombs that land in the ocean by Navy, Marine, and Army fighter pilots.
The weather would prove crucial during aviation reconnaissance and attack missions. Since low
ceilings and visibilities reduced by squalls and showers make adequate scouting difficult by the
defending forces, bad weather during the approach and rendezvous increase the possibility of a
surprise attack. Simply put for aviators it is great to have high ceilings and good visibility over the
target area. However, low ceilings are better for carriers. The ... Show more content on

It was no secret that the United States pilots were young and inexperienced while the Japanese pilots
were Veterans who had never known defeat. In a 4 day span on an island 1,300 miles north of Oahu,
America would give Japan their first loss of World War II. This battle would prove to be the turning
point in the war against Japan and start the rebuild of the United States Navy. Set the Stage In the
early morning of June 4th 1942, four Nakajima B5N aircraft attacked and caused heavy damage to
the United States base on the island of Midway. These attacks were expected, according to valuable
intelligence gathered by the U.S. Naval cryptologist using a machine nicknamed "magic". The
machine intercepted and decoded Japanese communications. America knew Japan was planning a
surprise attack, they just didn't know where. The base at Midway sent out a false report that the
water systems were down. That report was relayed by the Japanese and at that point America knew
when and where the next attack was planned. The cryptography technology proved to be the most
valuable tool used during this entire battle. Shortly after the initial attacks on the base at Midway,
American combat forces took the

reach, carrier based aircraft could reach the mainland. However, the bombers in the raid did not have
enough fuel to return, and were forced to land in China. The raid had a significant impact on the
outcome of the war because it baited the Japanese to counterattack, which led to the disastrous
Battle of Midway. After the successful attack naval commanders began to see the aircraft carrier as a
valuable weapon, and began to use them more. The strategy of long distance strikes developed from
the raid would later be used by both sides during the Battles of Midway and the Coral Sea.
Battle of Midway and the Coral Sea Due to the significant changes the aircraft carrier caused in
naval warfare, many commanders began to change their tactics. The Battle of Midway was one of
the first battles to show these changes in tactics. During the battle, the cruisers and battleships

A Nimitz class carrier can hold up to 90 aircraft and also can carry helicopters. It has a designated
launch pad separate from the regular runway so a helicopter and an aircraft can launch at the same

patrols. The lead ship of the class was launched in 1975 and the last ship was launched in 2009.
With a total of ten ships it is the most produced class currently. The Nimitz class has influenced
many operations during its service. During The Gulf War they provided air support or engaged other
surface ships. Some of the carriers provide air support for the ongoing Operation Enduring Freedom

The Battle Of The Midway
The Battle of Midway The battle of midway was arguably the most important battle in the pacific
because it shifted the tides of WWII from and American defensive to an American offensive in the
Pacific. Midway Island is located in the North Pacific Ocean, 2010km (1250 mi) northwest of
Honolulu. The two islands (east and sand island) combined have an overall area of 25sq miles. For
such a small island, the battle was one of the largest of WWII. The Battle of Midway occurred only
six months after Pearl Harbor. After the attack on Peal Harbor Japan 's fleet with ten aircraft carriers
dwarfed the United States ' four. The Battle of Midway is best explained and understood by focusing
on the people involved. Historians say that the Japanese plan was extremely complicated, consisting
of many attacks starting simultanisley. historians also say that the japenese fleet out gunned the

What was the Battle of Midway? Who was it between? Who won the battle? What was the cause of
the battle? The Battle of Midway was fought between Japan and the U.S. The Doolittle Raid made
Japan think their perimeter security was weak ("The Battle of Midway"). They wanted to avenge the
bombing of Japanese home islands, fix the hole in their Eastern defensive perimeter from the U.S.
control of Midway, finish the US Pacific Fleet, and take Hawaii (Morgenthau and Tuerkheimer).
Japan decided to attack Midway in order to get the U.S.A out of the Pacific and strengthen their
border. At 4:30 a.m. on June 4, 36 Japanese fighter planes and bombers attacked Midway (Krasner

When the Battle of Midway was won by the U.S., FDR was able to assist Britain when Germany
invaded them. Midway saved the decision by the Americans and British to focus their major effort
against Germany (Morgenthau and Tuerkheimer). The U.S. was able to send Britain 300 Sherman
tanks and artillery. If the U.S. had not sent the tanks, Rommel would have won and Britain would
have been occupied by German military (Morgenthau and Tuerkheimer). The Japanese crippled the
Pacific Fleet, driven Britain's Royal Navy out of the Indian Ocean, and threatened to link up with
the Germans in the Middle East. If Japan and Germany met up, they would have cut British and
American supply line through Iran to the Soviet Union, and pull the British and French colonies in
the Middle East into the Axis orbit. If that happened, Britain may lose control of the Eastern
Mediterranean and the Soviet Union might have negotiated an armistice with Germany (Lambert).
Though they seem unrelated, the Battle of Midway did in fact help defeat Hitler. While Japan and

they were able to turn their attention towards Great Britain and Hitler and help Great Britain defeat

Turning Point Of The Battle Of Midway
By the end of 1941 Japan had control of most of the Pacific theater. It was not until after the attack
on Pearl Harbor that the United States formally declared war on the Axis Powers. By the beginning
of 1942, the United States Navy, switched from being in a defensive position to an offensive
position and took the fight to the Japanese military in the Pacific. The Battle of Midway is
considered the turning point in the Pacific Theater during WWII. However, the Battle of Midway
may not have happened as it did if it were not for the men who tirelessly worked to break the
Japanese JN–25 code. The ability to decipher the encrypted Japanese messages gave the United
States Navy the upper hand in the Pacific theater and by the end of the war the Japanese ... Show

Returning to their aircraft carriers to refuel and rearm the Japanese bombers noticed the U.S. fleet
and prepared for their attack. Sent from the aircraft carriers were Devastator Torpedo Bombers and
Dauntless Dive Bombers. The first to attack were the Torpedo Bombers, flying low to the sea the
Japanese were able to defend their ship's with ease. The Japanese destroyed 35 Torpedo Bombers,
only 6 made it to their target destination which was one of the four Japanese aircraft carriers, but to
their surprise none of their torpedo's hit the intended target. Although the Torpedo Bombers did not
hit their target their sacrifice was not in vain. High above the Dauntless Dive Bombers were closing
in on their targets without any resistance. With just enough cloud coverage the Dive Bombers were
able to approach their targets with ease. Within the first day the Japanese carriers Akagi, Kaga, and
Soryu, were hit, set ablaze, and abandoned (). According to ..: Over the next two days, the US Navy
and US forces on Midway continued their attacks, forcing the Japanese to abandon the battle and
retreat to Japan. The Japanese lost approximately 4,800 men, four carriers, one cruiser, and hundreds
of aircraft, while the United States lost approximately 307 men, one carrier, one destroyer, and over
100 aircraft.
The critical victory at Midway, which crippled Japan's naval force was the turning point in the
Pacific. The U.S. was finally able to stop the growth of the Japanese Empire and started to push
back. Over the next three years the U.S. continued to decipher the JN–25 messages and by 02

The Battle of Midway, also referred to as 1943, will be analysed subjectively under the following

Anyone who grew up in the arcades is very much familiar with 1943: The Battle of Midway. The
game is set in the Pacific theater of World War II, off the coast of the Midway Atoll. In terms of
story, what separates the 1942 from the 1943 is that the latter sets specifically on aerial combat
around Midway.
"We filter reality through our sense, and through our minds, and the consciousness we actually
experience is a kind of illusion – not really reality at all." [J.Schell, 2008]

The Battle of Midway
The Battle of Midway was not the first battle or the last battle of the Second World War, but there is
not question that it was the most decisive battle of World War II in the Pacific. Midway is nothing
special–just a small string of islands six miles across built up to form coral–however its location and
resources are important. If the United States of America had not been in possession of Midway, the
Empire of Japan could have easily attacked Pearl Harbor, or possibly even the west coast of the
United States. I believe the possession of the Island of Midway was a key ingredient to winning the
war in the Pacific. Japan, which has almost no natural resources, would ... Show more content on

Despite all the success Japan had early in the war, they did not do as much damage to the United
States Pacific fleet as they would have like to have done. This gave America a false sense of security
at the time when Japan was preparing to take stronger action. Rear Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's
plan was to draw in the remaining American ships into an area where they could be attacked and
destroyed by a much greater number of Japanese vessels. Admiral Yamamoto thought that if Japan
captured valuable territory like the Midway Islands that the United States could not afford to give
up, he could destroy the remaining American ships with ease because the Americans would have no
supply chain. On April 18, 1942, the Japanese capitol city of Tokyo and the nearby cities of Nagoya,
Osaka and Kobe were bombed by sixteen United States Army B–25 bombers. In these attacks the
United States damaged ammunition factories and steel plants. These small bombings did not really
do much damage, but they did do their job, however, boosting the confidence of the American
people. Captured Americans flying in the B–25 bombers were not considered Prisoners or War, but
criminals, and went to trial. The Americans were put to death in some cases. Japan continued to
build up a massive fleet that included four aircraft carriers, seven battleships, thirteen cruisers, forty
destroyers, sixteen submarines and many troop transport ships (McGowen 24). The Japanese sailors

The Battle of Midway was a turning point in World War II. The Battle of Midway happened six
months after Pearl Harbor. After the attack on Pearl Harbor there was a lot of destruction;
consequently, the United States wanted revenge on Japan. United States made an attempt to do some

The U.S. Navy and Marines also began planning for an operation on Guadalcanal against the
Japanese. As Rear Admiral Raymond Spruance, one of the Navy's carrier task force commanders at
Midway, put it after the battle of Midway, "We had not been defeated by these superior Japanese
forces. Midway to us at the time meant that here is where we start from, here is where we really
jump off in a hard, bitter war against the Japanese." These keywords emphasized the true meaning to
the Battle of Midway, "... here is where we start from..." Midway, then, was a turning point in the
ally war effort, but the leaders of Japan and Germany ready to just give in to the ally forces.
Moreover, the real nature of the Battle of Midway was poorly understood for some months after the
Japanese defeat. On 9 June 1942, The New York Times noted that, "So far as we can now learn, the
main damage to the Japanese fleet off Midway was inflicted by our land–based airplanes. The battle
shows what land–based air power can do to naval and air power attacking from the open sea when
that land–based air power is alert, well–trained, courageous, and exists in sufficient quantity..." But
this statement was dead wrong. The Army Air Force B–17s and B–26s did not land a single hit on
the Japanese carriers. The really only effective attacks were made by the carrier dive bombers. The
proof of this came on 19– 20 June 1944, in the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Which is considered to
be the second coming of the Battle of Midway. Fought near the island of Saipan in the Marianas
group, the Battle of the Philippine Sea set the rebuilt Japanese carrier force, led by Vice Admiral
Jisaburo Ozawa, against Admiral Spruance's Fifth Fleet. Both Admirals had studied the Battle of

The Battle of Midway
The Battle of Midway began on June 4, 1942, and lasted until June 7 of the same year. This battle
was a major turning point in World War II, delaying Japan's navy for the remainder of the war. The
Japanese sent most of their navy towards Midway Island, which was currently being used by the
U.S. as an airfield. The battle was fought by aircraft launched from aircraft carriers. Four Japanese
fleet carriers were lost among their crew.
Six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States defeated Japan in one of the most
destructive naval battles of World War II. The U.S. was unable to counter Japan's planned ambush of
its few remaining aircraft carriers, causing permanent damage on the Japanese Navy. It was also a
big turning point in the Pacific campaign. The victory allowed the United States and its allies to
move into an offensive possession. The Battle of Midway was more than an epic World War II clash

Gordon Prange, the distinguished historian, noted that "Midway was a positive American victory not

concentrate our limited forces to meet there naval advance on Midway when they otherwise 3,000
miles out of place."
In the end, Yamamoto's biggest fears had become a real. Due to an impressive mix of leadership,
determination, and skill on the part of Admiral Nimitz, the officers and men of Station Hypo, the
pilots and soldiers, and the sailors and marines who carried the fight to the enemy, Japan was on the
defensive for the rest of the war. The rising sun of Dai Nippon, which had shone so brightly for so

The Battle of Midway was a sea–based battle between the United States and Japan which occurred
between June 4th and June 7th, 1942. Named for its location near the Midway Island in the Pacific
Ocean, the Battle of Midway was important because it was the first decisive victory for Allied
Forces in the Pacific during World War II. The United States sunk four Japanese carriers (the only
four that Japan brought to the fight) and one heavy cruiser, significantly damaged two destroyers
and second heavy cruiser, and destroyed 248 aircraft. In comparison, the United States lost only one
carrier, one destroyer, and 150 aircraft.
The Battle of Midway occurred only about six months after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. The
Japanese had won numerous battles after Pearl Harbor, and were very strong in the Pacific.

First, the United States broke Japan's JN–25 code shortly before the battle commenced. As a result,
the United States knew at least a week in advance that the Japanese would attack Midway on June
4th or 5th. Therefore, much unlike the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States knew where and
when Japan would attack, and even knew roughly how many ships and planes it would attack with.
Second, in preparation for the known strength, the commander of the Pacific fleet brought a
reinforcement carrier, the Yorktown. The Yorktown had recently sustained significant damage, and
despite estimates that it would be months before the ship would be ready for battle, it sailed to
Midway after only three days of repairs at Pearl Harbor. Had the JN–25 code not been broken, the
Yorktown certainly would not have been rushed to Midway. Although the ship was ultimately sunk,

The Battle of Midway
On June 3rd, 1942, the United States declared war on Imperialistic Japan and Nazi Germany. Due to
the bombing of the United States' naval base at Pearl Harbor by the Japanese the U.S. was forced to
take action. The United States began their first naval battle near the Midway islands in defense of its
pacific fleet and positioning. Midway was the Japanese' last goal for its western expansion in the
Pacific. Just after midnight on June 4th,1942, the United States attacked a fleet of Japanese transport
ships. One American torpedo plane took out fleet tanker "Akabono Maru". Later that morning at
about 6:30am, Japanese planes began bombing midway island installations, though causing minimal

into World War II. During the Start of the war the United States encountered The Battle of Midway.
This battle would be one of the major turning points during World War II. The Japanese' motive for
the bombing Pearl Harbor was to destroy the United States Pacific fleet so that the Japanese could
have complete naval control of the Pacific Ocean as well as to go through with the Japanese Pan
Asian program with–out the United
States interference. Midway was the first major naval battle between the United Stated and Japan
after Pearl Harbor. It was also one of the most important battles in all of World
War II. The battle of Midway began in June of 1942 and ended just 4 days later. Though it was a
relatively short battle, it was still immensely important to the United States victory over Japan in
World War II. The Battle of Midway was fought with a variety of naval ships such as battleships,
destroyers, aircraft carriers, as well as naval planes and submarines. Many of these ships and planes
were lost during this battle especially for the Japanese.(Cressman, Robert J., "No End Save Victory",

However, to certain extent, they are right. The Americans being able to predict where the Japanese

On the other hand, many historians think that Japanese were the cause of their own destruction.
Evidently, when they attack Pearl Harbor. Japanese knew that there will be revenge for this, but their

Battle of Midway was a major naval battle, widely regarded as the most important one of the Pacific
Campaign of World War II.[3] It took place from June 4 to 7, 1942, approximately one month after
the Battle of the Coral Sea, five months after the Japanese capture of Wake Island, and exactly six
months to the day after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. The United States Navy decisively defeated a
Japanese attack against Midway Atoll.
Both sides sustained significant losses. Four Japanese aircraft carriers and a heavy cruiser were sunk
in exchange for one American aircraft carrier and a destroyer. The heavy losses permanently

did consider Midway vital; after the battle, establishment of a U.S. submarine base on Midway
extended submarine range 2,400 miles (3,900 km). An airstrip on Midway served as a forward
staging point for bomber attacks on Wake Island.[14] Midway Atoll, several months before the
battle. Eastern Island (with the airfield) is in the foreground, and the larger Sand Island is in the
background to the west.
Typical of Japanese naval planning during the Second World War, Yamamoto's battle plan was quite
complex.[15] Additionally, his designs were predicated on optimistic intelligence information
suggesting USS Enterprise and USS Hornet, forming Task Force 16, were the only carriers available
to the U.S. Pacific Fleet at the time. USS Lexington had been sunk and USS Yorktown severely
damaged (and believed by the Japanese to have been sunk) at the Battle of the Coral Sea just a
month earlier. The Japanese were also aware that USS Saratoga was undergoing repairs on the West
Coast after taking torpedo damage from a submarine.
More important, however, was Yamamoto's belief that the Americans had been demoralized by their
frequent defeats during the preceding six months. Yamamoto felt deception would be required to
lure the U.S. fleet into a fatally compromised situation.[16] To this end, he dispersed his forces so
that their full extent (particularly his battleships) would be unlikely to be discovered by the
Americans prior to battle. However, his

The power of homefront was one of the causes why the United States had won the war. After the
attack at Pearl Harbor, the Japanese navy had outnumbered the American war equipments such as
battleships, aircraft carriers and many others. And they had rejoice celebrated and planned for
territorial expansions. During this time, the industrial power boomed in the United States. There
were constructions of the ammunition industries and battleship industries that repaired the broken
ships from the Pearl Harbor attack. Industries propagated the United States to look superior over the
Japanese due to their huge naval force that the Japanese never expected. In addition to that, this
period also gave America to train its army well and equipped for the revenge on Japan. However,
Admiral Yamamoto, during his career years, had visited the United States and noticed the power of
the industries. He had inferred that if the Japanese were to go to war with American and it had lasted
long, American industries would rise and outnumber the amount of aircrafts, weapons, and
battleships with that of Japan easily. Even though, Admiral Yamamoto knew the consequences, he

This needless division of their fleets held major repercussions in the future because when the Mobile
force was surprised by American Task force 16 and 17, the main force could not support the mobile
force due to the large distance between them. The other main contributor to the Japanese loss at the
battle of midway was the fact that the American Fleet caught the Japanese fleet off guard and
surprised them thanks to breaking their code. In May of 1942 a group of code breakers who worked
for the Navy's office of Intelligence learned that the Japanese were planning an invasion of the atoll
of Midway. Because of this information, Task force 16 and 17 were able to get into position to
surprise the Japanese fleet while they were trying to attack the atoll of midway. Due to these issues
with their code being cracked by Naval intelligence and their unconventional organization of their
fleet, the Japanese suffered a devastating defeat at the Battle of Midway. The "Chapter 5: The Battle

The battle began with a Japanese plan to attack Midway Island, a US airbase, and use the airfields to

The battle started from June 3 and ended on June 7, 1942. It was held in Midway, an island located
in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, about halfway between Asia and North America. The Battle of
Midway was a result caused by the Japanese naval, who wanted to take over Hawaii. The battle of
Midway destroyed Japan's strength when the Americans attacked and obliterated four of its aircraft
carriers and more. The attack on Pearl Harbour, six months before the battle of Midway, caused the
American navy to weaken, but they were definitely not out of the war. As the Japanese worked on

The Japanese, however, figured that the Americans were coming when they were attacking Midway,
which caused them to change plans immediately. They had to a launch more planes to sink the U.S
navy who were already attacking them at that time. The Americans were proven to be very clever.
The U.S dive–bombers caught the Japanese carries while they were refueling their weapons, which
left them helpless and vulnerable. This caused the Japanese to lose four of their carriers, which were
their main strength (Akagi, Soryu, Kaga, and Hiryu), along with 322 aircraft, more than five
thousand sailors in that battle and their heavy cruiser, Mikuma. The U.S lost 147 aircraft and over
300 seamen. As a result, the Japanese turned back and chose to attack Hawaii instead. However,
they needed a strategic plan and so, they chose to invade a target that was relatively close to Pearl
Harbour, in order for them to draw out the American fleet. They then planned to invade an island
called Midway, which was about 1300 miles around Hawaii. With the ability of the U.S navy to
solve Japanese navy codes, the Americans figured out the exact plan of the Japanese and the exact

Who was involved?
In the battle of Midway, the first attack was committed by the Americans led by Admiral Nimitz and
Commander Fletcher inside the homeland of Japan. This forced the Japanese forces led by Admiral
Yamamoto (the same leader who planned to attack on Pearl Harbour) to push the Americans in the
middle of the Pacific Ocean where the actual battle was begun.
Why did they take the actions they did?
The reason behind this crucial battle was that as the Americans were pushed back in the middle of
the Pacific Ocean, the Japanese developed a plan to sneak up on the US forces. This was
deliberately done to trap the Americans aircraft carriers so they can destroy them. If the plan turned
to be successful, this would give the Japanese a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

This is what caused Japan to attack Midway. They did not want to get attacked again by American
air forces. Japan had thought of a very simple plan to attack Midway, but it would be difficult to
execute perfectly. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was given permission to come up with the plan and
lead the attack on Midway. He was the one to do this because he thought of the attack on Pearl
Harbor. The Japansese plan consisted of two parts, Operation AL and Operation MI. Operation AL
was actually hundreds of miles away from Midway. This part of the plan was a strategy that was
made to pull in many ships to the Aleution Islands. If this were to happen successfully, many
American forces would be in the north and not defending Midway. Operation MI was the attack on
Midway. The Japanese would destroy Midway and then would attack any other U.S. forces that
came later to help defend Midway (White 5). The Battle of Midway began on June 4, 1942. The
group of Japanese ships, called the Main Body, sat and waited in the water for the American forces.

Background Information
Battle of Midway was a great naval battle between the United State and the Empire of Japan during
World War II, which was lasted for 5 days (4th – 7th June 1942) and located in the Pacific Theater
(see Fig 1). Due to the rampant fanaticism in Japan about expanding territory via colonization, the
Empire of Japan aimed to claim the naval supremacy in the central Pacific region, which was also
the main aim of this battle. However, this was contrary to America's ideology that threatened its
hegemony in the Pacific region. It was a decisive contest for naval authority in the Pacific Theater
between the United States Navy and the Japanese Imperial Navy (pacificwar, 2016). (Figure 1: the

Japan had won many other battles after Pearl Harbor and was particularly strong in the Pacific. The
Japanese plan, like the earlier attack on Pearl Harbor, tried to eliminate the United States being the
main ruler in the Pacific. This would give Japan the opportunity to establish its Greater East Asia
Co–Prosperity Sphere. The Japanese hoped that another discouraging lose would force the United
States to surrender in the Pacific War, guaranteeing Japan the dominance in the Pacific (Museum of
Military Memorabilia). Because the Japanese wanted to seize Midway and attack the United States,
Commander Yamamoto Isoroku sent out the Japanese navy including four heavy and three light
aircraft carriers. He ordered the soldiers to occupy and destroy the American fleet and invade
Midway. However, the U.S. intelligence was already aware of Japanese intentions after breaking
their naval code. With this advantage the United States prepared three heavy aircraft carriers. These
ships were placed 350 miles northeast of Midway and awaited the move of Yamamoto's navy. While

The Importance Of The Battle Of Midway
Why was the battle of Midway so crucial? On the 4th of June in 1942 started the victorious win of
the Americans that was soon to begin World War II! It was quite an amazing battle because the
Japanese should have won, but the Americans out smarted them, hacking naval codes, being ready,
and being where they needed to be at the right time. The Americans took down the Japanese keeping
control of Midway. The battle of Midway between the Americans and the Japanese was the most
decisive naval battle in history it was the turning point because it brought the Americans into the

The Japanese Threat During the time between Pearl Harbor and Midway, the Americans attacked
Japan several times and Japan decided to strike back at Midway. Following Pearl Harbor, Germany

The Battle of Midway
The United States faced the Japanese in the Pacific Ocean during World War II in what was later
known as some of the most gruesome battles in either country's history. The Pacific theatre of World
War II consisted of a series of bloody conflicts in which the United States responded to early
Japanese victories with an offensive campaign that won a decisive victory for the Allies. Although
many significant battles were fought in the Pacific, the most important battle was the Battle of
Midway, because it was a decisive victory for the Allies that changed the course of the war
completely.
The United States officially joined World War II on December 8, 1941, the day after the devastating
attack on Pearl Harbor and the loss of more than 2,000 lives. However, American forces were
already on the defensive as the Japanese military pushed British Borneo, Hong Kong, Guam, and the
Philippines. The battle that occurred at Luzon was a devastating defeat, resulting 76,000 American
soldiers surrendering to Japanese forces. These men were forced to march from Bataan, a long and
terrible journey in which thousands of men were killed by Japanese soldiers, malnutrition, and
diseases such as malaria. Losing the Philippines was disastrous; the Bataan death march and the
defeat of General MacArthur seriously damaged the morale of the American people. The islands of
the Philippines itself were also a major loss to the United States as their location had provided for a

Aesthetics In 1943: The Battle Of Midway
Aesthetics
1943: The Battle of Midway is one of many commercially and critically successful games from the
golden age of arcade video games that are remembered. The graphics in Galaga matches nicely with
the optical experience/flow of the games design. [Fig.5] The aesthetics in 1943: The Battle of
Midway are extremely effective; the use of CRT fixed colours for the monitor completely
determined the game's visual style. The scene creates a kind of 'hyper–real' look, which fits perfectly
with the theme. This resulted back with the objects in the game being more emphasized and making
the gamer more aware of where everything is. 1943's aesthetics attempts to put the player in the
middle of the action. This is clear from the very outset. The first think that the player engages with is
the cabinet itself, prior to any engagement with the game itself. The design of the cabinet has gone
through a number of iterations. The original is the most functional in terms of aesthetics.
Despite similar technology to 1942, the sequel 1943 was far more advanced in terms of graphics.

The Turning Point Of War: The Battle Of Midway
World War Two was fought between the Allied and the Axis powers. The Japanese joined in the war
because they wanted to expand their control over the Pacific, something that the United States also
wanted more control over. This is what lead to the bombing of Pearl Harbour. Japan wanted the
United States out of the Pacific. The war in the Pacific made opportunity for creative battle
strategies, considering it wasn't the typical battlefield. Strategists had to navigate the ocean as well
as take and keep control of islands that were far apart. The Battle of Midway took place from June
4th to June 7th, 1942, About six months after the bombing of Pearl Harbour. Midway is about 1,300
miles northwest of Oahu. Japanese Admiral, Isoroku Yamamoto, had planned to execute a surprise

war between the United States and Japan. The loss of four carriers seriously hindered the Japanese's
ability to attack offensively. The Japanese were never able to regain the full strength of its navy. The
United States would continue to push through Japanese defences in the Pacific. In my mind, what

This intelligence allowed Nimitz to avoid a secondary naval battle and concentrate a surprise attack
unforeseen by the Japanese at Midway. Nimitz was able to position the fleet out of the Japanese
carrier's striking range and hide fall under the protection of land based air at Midway. Aligning the
three carriers and land–based air power was instrumental in matching and defeating the larger and

Yamamoto had numerical naval superiority in the Pacific to defeat the Americans at sea but

instruments, filling the air with a sweet melody. Walking along this beautiful parkway, looking out at
the blue waters crashing against the docks, I could not help but realize how blessed and grateful I
am to be free in such a great nation.
The first attraction I saw was a huge granite monument just across the street from the Midway. It
honored the second most decorated ship in WWII, known as the USS San Diego CL–53. This ship
was a tiny cruiser that had tremendous

Battle Of Midway Research Papers
The Battle of Midway showed the true might of the sleeping giant: the United States of America.
The tenacity, intelligence, and damage control would determine the beginning of the end of the
Japanese Empire, and the rise of the Americans in the Pacific. The outcome of this battle would
determine the end of the World War II. The Battle of Midway was one of the most significant battles
in the Pacific theatre; a stunning victory by the Americans who were almost outnumbered two to
one. To understand why the Battle of Midway was so important, we must look back before America
joined the war. It was a beautiful morning on December 7th, 1941, there seemed to be not a problem
in sight until the sounds of hundreds of roaring engines in the sky and ... Show more content on

Next the Marine Corps on the island sent it's bombers to attack the Japanese Fleet which disrupted
Japanese cohesion. Strikes were launched by US Aircraft Carriers showing the Japanese that the US
was in the vicinity. Next what is sometimes referred to as the fateful five minutes in these 5 minutes
3 of the 4 japanese carriers would be disabled or destroyed and the last would be destroyed later in
the day. Japanese on the carriers Akagi, Kaga were getting ready to launch aircraft when American
bombers attacked them without warning. The unsuspected Japanese aboard Kaga were only alerted
at the last second when lookouts screamed "Helldivers!" as four 1000 pound bombs tore through the
deck of Kagai turning it into a fiery hell. The focus went off of Kaga and to the Japanese flag ship
Akagi who had 2 legendary pilots of earlier conflicts aboard as they watched Kaga burn awaiting in
fear of what would happen next, again the only warning they had was "Helldivers!" they were hit
with extreme accuracy and precision igniting secondary explosions and fires within the ship. Soryu
and Hiryu Japan's last carriers standing met the same fortune it's sisters met Soryu only minutes
after its two sisters and Hiryu later in the day. Not only did the Japanese lose its carriers it lost its
most experienced pilots because instead of bringing their experienced pilots back to the mainland to
train the new pilots like the Americans they kept their experienced pilots fighting which was
horrible for the Japanese because of these pilots were lost their skill could not be replaced. After the
battle the Americans called the inexperienced Japanese pilots "The Great Marianas Turkey shoot"
because they would be killed at such high numbers. America didn't come out of this battle unscaved
either America went into this battle with 3 aircraft

Midway, The Battle That Ultimately Doomed Japan In WWII...

  • 1. Midway, the Battle That Ultimately Doomed Japan in WWII... Midway, the Battle That Ultimately Doomed Japan in WWII By: John King Could a loss at Midway have cost America the Pacific, and led to WWII ending in a different way? The Battle of Midway is know as the turning point of the war in the Pacific. It turned the tables and put the United States into an offensive position. Midway was one, if not the, most important battle of World War II because of the background, strategies, battle tactics, and most importantly the outcome and effects of this battle. "Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 – a date which will live in infamy – the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." These words were spoken the day after the bombing of Pearl ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The U.S. lost one aircraft carrier, the USS Lexington, and the USS Yorktown was severely damaged, but would make it back to port for repair. These Pacific battles were what led to the Japanese Empire trying to deliver a finishing blow to the U.S. Navy. The Japanese commander, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was in command of the Japanese Pacific Fleet. The Japanese plan was very simple. First, they would create a diversion by launching an attack on the Aleutian Islands. Then, they would send three groups of ships to Midway. One was a group of soldiers to invade the island. The second group was battleships, the heavy gun power. One of these happened to be the largest battleship in the world, the Yamato. And finally, the third group contained four big aircraft carriers and their battle task force. The carriers held a combined 248 planes. They planned to attack and destroy the U.S. base. This attack would make the U.S. send their carriers to the island to try and save the island. They would ambush the U.S. carriers and destroy them once they got there. To the Japanese, their plan was unstoppable because they had three times more ships than the U.S. and the element of surprise. Unfortunately for Japan, they made the mistake of under–estimating the U.S. intelligence agency. In Pearl Harbor, where the war started, the U.S. deciphered the code the Japanese were using to communicate. They were able to learn very important details that would help incredibly in their ... The Japanese boats vs the U.S. Navy for Midway an island in between Hawaii and Japan. A battle is taking place in the pacific ocean offshore of Midway, On June 7 1942 about six months after the bombing of pearl harbor. A battle that not only took place on the ground, but on water, and in the air. The immediate cause of the battle of midway, was pearl harbor, when Japan bombed are naval base. This conflict probably could have been avoided if Japan never bombed us, yet then the U.S. and Japan were in a fight before the pearl harbor incident. And japan was on the axis forces where we were supplying military goods to the allied forces. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The invasion of Manchuria was a Japanese invasion that tried to expand japan. When japan attack china they attacked our oil imports on china. So when embargoed all oil exports in that area, which led them to attack pearl harbor. Which is the immediate cause of the U.S. joining WWII. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Events_leading_to_the_attack_on_Pearl_Harbor)This was a geographic issue. Another cause that led to the battle of midway is Adolf Hitler. After the bombing of pearl harbor, Hitler's reaction was an opportunity. If Japan kept the U.S. distracted Germany and Italy could attack Britain without us sending backup overseas, because 1 Japan was attacking us and, 2 we were low on ships. Therefore, Hitler saw this as an amazing opportunity. This was a social issue at the time. The last and probably most important factor is the bombing of pearl harbor. The bombing of pearl harbor was important because it brought the U.S. into the war and led japan and us to literally be at war against each other. Which if it didn't happen, we wouldn't have been going into the war for that reason. And we probably would have released the embargo after the war was over. Therefore if we were never even in the war at all the battle of midway cow would have never even happened. This was a huge Political Factor because it brought us into ... • 13. The Battle of Midway The Battle of Midway, one of the most important battles of World War II, took place from June 4, 1942 to June 7, 1942. The battle occurred about five months after the Japanese capture of Wake Island, and exactly six months after the Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. Before the Battle of Midway, the Japanese were on the offensive through South–East Asia and the Pacific. The Japanese attacked Wake Island Pearl Harbor and other atolls, which strengthened their empire and severely damaged the U.S. Navy. During the Battle of Midway, the Imperial Japanese Navy lost four carriers: Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu, and the Soryu. After the Battle of Midway, the U.S. Navy was able to make their first offensive move at the Battle of Guadalcanal. Before the Battle of Midway, U.S. morale was low because the Japanese were rampaging through the Pacific, but after the Battle of Midway, the Kido Butai was permanently damaged which meant the U.S. Navy was able to take back the Pacific using General MacArthur's "Island Hopping" strategy. The Imperial Japanese Navy was not a force to be reckoned with. In 1939, Japan started to capture tiny atolls surrounding the island in order to make a perimeter. Japan's Empire started to expand tremendously because their Imperial Navy was so strong. They were a devastating threat to the United States because Japan outnumbered the U.S. Navy in soldiers and carriers. Between December 1941 and the middle of 1942, the Imperial forces took from the Dutch, Americans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Battle Of Midway Research Paper The Battle of Midway is known as one of the most miraculous naval battles in modern history. It was a battle in which the enemy was seen as far superior and near invincible. This would be a battle fought from the skies with bombs that land in the ocean by Navy, Marine, and Army fighter pilots. The weather would prove crucial during aviation reconnaissance and attack missions. Since low ceilings and visibilities reduced by squalls and showers make adequate scouting difficult by the defending forces, bad weather during the approach and rendezvous increase the possibility of a surprise attack. Simply put for aviators it is great to have high ceilings and good visibility over the target area. However, low ceilings are better for carriers. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was no secret that the United States pilots were young and inexperienced while the Japanese pilots were Veterans who had never known defeat. In a 4 day span on an island 1,300 miles north of Oahu, America would give Japan their first loss of World War II. This battle would prove to be the turning point in the war against Japan and start the rebuild of the United States Navy. Set the Stage In the early morning of June 4th 1942, four Nakajima B5N aircraft attacked and caused heavy damage to the United States base on the island of Midway. These attacks were expected, according to valuable intelligence gathered by the U.S. Naval cryptologist using a machine nicknamed "magic". The machine intercepted and decoded Japanese communications. America knew Japan was planning a surprise attack, they just didn't know where. The base at Midway sent out a false report that the water systems were down. That report was relayed by the Japanese and at that point America knew when and where the next attack was planned. The cryptography technology proved to be the most valuable tool used during this entire battle. Shortly after the initial attacks on the base at Midway, American combat forces took the ... The raid had a significant impact on the outcome of the war because it baited the Japanese to counterattack, which led to the disastrous Battle of Midway. After the successful attack naval commanders began to see the aircraft carrier as a valuable weapon, and began to use them more. The strategy of long distance strikes developed from the raid would later be used by both sides during the Battles of Midway and the Coral Sea. Battle of Midway and the Coral Sea Due to the significant changes the aircraft carrier caused in naval warfare, many commanders began to change their tactics. The Battle of Midway was one of the first battles to show these changes in tactics. During the battle, the cruisers and battleships provided additional anti–aircraft support, ... • 25. The Battle Of The Midway The Battle of Midway The battle of midway was arguably the most important battle in the pacific because it shifted the tides of WWII from and American defensive to an American offensive in the Pacific. Midway Island is located in the North Pacific Ocean, 2010km (1250 mi) northwest of Honolulu. The two islands (east and sand island) combined have an overall area of 25sq miles. For such a small island, the battle was one of the largest of WWII. The Battle of Midway occurred only six months after Pearl Harbor. After the attack on Peal Harbor Japan 's fleet with ten aircraft carriers dwarfed the United States ' four. The Battle of Midway is best explained and understood by focusing on the people involved. Historians say that the Japanese plan was extremely complicated, consisting of many attacks starting simultanisley. historians also say that the japenese fleet out gunned the Americans heavenly. After the Pearl Harbor America was crippled and with out the large military presence of America in the pacific america and the islands it controlled were left vonrable. The Battle of Midway was fought between Japan and the U.S. The Doolittle Raid made Japan think their perimeter security was weak ("The Battle of Midway"). They wanted to avenge the bombing of Japanese home islands, fix the hole in their Eastern defensive perimeter from the U.S. control of Midway, finish the US Pacific Fleet, and take Hawaii (Morgenthau and Tuerkheimer). Japan decided to attack Midway in order to get the U.S.A out of the Pacific and strengthen their border. At 4:30 a.m. on June 4, 36 Japanese fighter planes and bombers attacked Midway (Krasner 28). When the Battle of Midway was won by the U.S., FDR was able to assist Britain when Germany invaded them. Midway saved the decision by the Americans and British to focus their major effort against Germany (Morgenthau and Tuerkheimer). The U.S. was able to send Britain 300 Sherman tanks and artillery. If the U.S. had not sent the tanks, Rommel would have won and Britain would have been occupied by German military (Morgenthau and Tuerkheimer). The Japanese crippled the Pacific Fleet, driven Britain's Royal Navy out of the Indian Ocean, and threatened to link up with the Germans in the Middle East. If Japan and Germany met up, they would have cut British and American supply line through Iran to the Soviet Union, and pull the British and French colonies in the Middle East into the Axis orbit. If that happened, Britain may lose control of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Soviet Union might have negotiated an armistice with Germany (Lambert). It was not until after the attack on Pearl Harbor that the United States formally declared war on the Axis Powers. By the beginning of 1942, the United States Navy, switched from being in a defensive position to an offensive position and took the fight to the Japanese military in the Pacific. The Battle of Midway is considered the turning point in the Pacific Theater during WWII. However, the Battle of Midway may not have happened as it did if it were not for the men who tirelessly worked to break the Japanese JN–25 code. Essay On The Battle Of Midway 1943: The Battle of Midway [1987] 1943: The Battle of Midway is a shoot 'em up arcade game, or more accurately a vertical scrolling shooter game, designed and developed by Capcom and published in 1987. The game was the sequel to Capcom's 1984 game, 1942 which was the first in the 19XX series. In this game analysis of 1943: The Battle of Midway, also referred to as 1943, will be analysed subjectively under the following headings: story, technology, aesthetics, and mechanics. Story "We have the ability to project ourselves into just about anything we control." [J.Schell, 2008] Anyone who grew up in the arcades is very much familiar with 1943: The Battle of Midway. The game is set in the Pacific theater of World War II, off the coast of the Midway Atoll. In terms of story, what separates the 1942 from the 1943 is that the latter sets specifically on aerial combat around Midway. "We filter reality through our sense, and through our minds, and the consciousness we actually experience is a kind of illusion – not really reality at all." [J.Schell, 2008] As this game is somewhat fictional in its nature, Schell states a very relevant point about reality and this 'illusion' games create for us. ... Battle Of Midway Essay U.S. History Since 1877 November 29, 2005 The Battle of Midway The Battle of Midway was not the first battle or the last battle of the Second World War, but there is not question that it was the most decisive battle of World War II in the Pacific. Midway is nothing special–just a small string of islands six miles across built up to form coral–however its location and resources are important. If the United States of America had not been in possession of Midway, the Empire of Japan could have easily attacked Pearl Harbor, or possibly even the west coast of the United States. I believe the possession of the Island of Midway was a key ingredient to winning the war in the Pacific. Japan, which has almost no natural resources, would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite all the success Japan had early in the war, they did not do as much damage to the United States Pacific fleet as they would have like to have done. This gave America a false sense of security at the time when Japan was preparing to take stronger action. Rear Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's plan was to draw in the remaining American ships into an area where they could be attacked and destroyed by a much greater number of Japanese vessels. Admiral Yamamoto thought that if Japan captured valuable territory like the Midway Islands that the United States could not afford to give up, he could destroy the remaining American ships with ease because the Americans would have no supply chain. On April 18, 1942, the Japanese capitol city of Tokyo and the nearby cities of Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe were bombed by sixteen United States Army B–25 bombers. In these attacks the United States damaged ammunition factories and steel plants. These small bombings did not really do much damage, but they did do their job, however, boosting the confidence of the American people. Captured Americans flying in the B–25 bombers were not considered Prisoners or War, but criminals, and went to trial. The Americans were put to death in some cases. Japan continued to build up a massive fleet that included four aircraft carriers, seven battleships, thirteen cruisers, forty destroyers, sixteen submarines and many troop transport ships (McGowen 24). Midway to us at the time meant that here is where we start from, here is where we really jump off in a hard, bitter war against the Japanese." These keywords emphasized the true meaning to the Battle of Midway, "... here is where we start from..." Midway, then, was a turning point in the ally war effort, but the leaders of Japan and Germany ready to just give in to the ally forces. Moreover, the real nature of the Battle of Midway was poorly understood for some months after the Japanese defeat. On 9 June 1942, The New York Times noted that, "So far as we can now learn, the main damage to the Japanese fleet off Midway was inflicted by our land–based airplanes. The battle shows what land–based air power can do to naval and air power attacking from the open sea when that land–based air power is alert, well–trained, courageous, and exists in sufficient quantity..." But this statement was dead wrong. The Army Air Force B–17s and B–26s did not land a single hit on the Japanese carriers. The really only effective attacks were made by the carrier dive bombers. The proof of this came on 19– 20 June 1944, in the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Which is considered to be the second coming of the Battle of Midway. This battle was a major turning point in World War II, delaying Japan's navy for the remainder of the war. Named for its location near the Midway Island in the Pacific Ocean, the Battle of Midway was important because it was the first decisive victory for Allied Forces in the Pacific during World War II. The United States sunk four Japanese carriers (the only four that Japan brought to the fight) and one heavy cruiser, significantly damaged two destroyers and second heavy cruiser, and destroyed 248 aircraft. In comparison, the United States lost only one carrier, one destroyer, and 150 aircraft. The Battle of Midway occurred only about six months after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. The United States Navy decisively defeated a Japanese attack against Midway Atoll. Both sides sustained significant losses. Eastern Island (with the airfield) is in the foreground, and the larger Sand Island is in the background to the west. Typical of Japanese naval planning during the Second World War, Yamamoto's battle plan was quite complex.[15] Additionally, his designs were predicated on optimistic intelligence information suggesting USS Enterprise and USS Hornet, forming Task Force 16, were the only carriers available to the U.S. Pacific Fleet at the time. USS Lexington had been sunk and USS Yorktown severely damaged (and believed by the Japanese to have been sunk) at the Battle of the Coral Sea just a month earlier. The Japanese were also aware that USS Saratoga was undergoing repairs on the West Coast after taking torpedo damage from a submarine. More important, however, was Yamamoto's belief that the Americans had been demoralized by their frequent defeats during the preceding six months. Yamamoto felt deception would be required to lure the U.S. fleet into a fatally compromised situation.[16] To this end, he dispersed his forces so that their full extent (particularly his battleships) would be unlikely to be discovered by the Americans prior to battle. The Battle of Midway was an intense naval battle between the United States and Japan, that was fought in June 1942. The battle was important to the Pacific Theatre, and it greatly affected the outcome of the war in the Far East. The Battle of Midway was a decisive turning point in the war: the Japanese plan of attack on the island was discovered by US codebreakers, the Battle of Midway was an intense air and aircraft carrier fight, and the battle of Midway turned the tides of the war against Japan. The battle began with a Japanese plan to attack Midway Island, a US airbase, and use the airfields to hunt down US carriers (Zapotoczny para 1). Before Midway, The Japanese had won a string of victories across the Pacific and were thought unstoppable by many people. They had won victories in Burma, Singapore, The Philippines, Hong Kong, Borneo, The Dutch East Indies, and many more. These decisive and tactical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Midway turned the tides of the war against Japan. It ended the string of uninterrupted Japanese victories and rid of the Japanese supposed "invincibility" (Zapotoczny para 4). The battle allowed the US and the allies to go on the offensive and start their island hopping campaign. After Midway, there were operations in Guadalcanal and The Solomon islands (Zapotoczny para 5). Japanese industry would take a great deal of time to replace its losses of 4 of its total 6 fleet carriers, 300+ aircraft, and 3,000+ troops. In the time it would take Japan to make 3 aircraft carriers, the US could make 24 aircraft carriers (Reynolds para 33). The Battle of Midway's results gave the allies a great advantage in the ... • 101. Battle Of Midway Research Paper The battle started from June 3 and ended on June 7, 1942. It was held in Midway, an island located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, about halfway between Asia and North America. The Battle of Midway was a result caused by the Japanese naval, who wanted to take over Hawaii. The battle of Midway destroyed Japan's strength when the Americans attacked and obliterated four of its aircraft carriers and more. The attack on Pearl Harbour, six months before the battle of Midway, caused the American navy to weaken, but they were definitely not out of the war. As the Japanese worked on fulfilling their overall plan of seizing territories all over Southeast Asia, the US navy worked on trying to stop them. The Japanese navy's plan at that point of time, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Japanese, however, figured that the Americans were coming when they were attacking Midway, which caused them to change plans immediately. They had to a launch more planes to sink the U.S navy who were already attacking them at that time. The Americans were proven to be very clever. The U.S dive–bombers caught the Japanese carries while they were refueling their weapons, which left them helpless and vulnerable. This caused the Japanese to lose four of their carriers, which were their main strength (Akagi, Soryu, Kaga, and Hiryu), along with 322 aircraft, more than five thousand sailors in that battle and their heavy cruiser, Mikuma. The U.S lost 147 aircraft and over 300 seamen. As a result, the Japanese turned back and chose to attack Hawaii instead. However, they needed a strategic plan and so, they chose to invade a target that was relatively close to Pearl Harbour, in order for them to draw out the American fleet. They then planned to invade an island called Midway, which was about 1300 miles around Hawaii. With the ability of the U.S navy to solve Japanese navy codes, the Americans figured out the exact plan of the Japanese and the exact location and time of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 105. Battle Of Midway Who was involved? In the battle of Midway, the first attack was committed by the Americans led by Admiral Nimitz and Commander Fletcher inside the homeland of Japan. This forced the Japanese forces led by Admiral Yamamoto (the same leader who planned to attack on Pearl Harbour) to push the Americans in the middle of the Pacific Ocean where the actual battle was begun. Why did they take the actions they did? The reason behind this crucial battle was that as the Americans were pushed back in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the Japanese developed a plan to sneak up on the US forces. This was deliberately done to trap the Americans aircraft carriers so they can destroy them. If the plan turned to be successful, this would give the Japanese a ... Japan had thought of a very simple plan to attack Midway, but it would be difficult to execute perfectly. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was given permission to come up with the plan and lead the attack on Midway. He was the one to do this because he thought of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japansese plan consisted of two parts, Operation AL and Operation MI. Operation AL was actually hundreds of miles away from Midway. This part of the plan was a strategy that was made to pull in many ships to the Aleution Islands. If this were to happen successfully, many American forces would be in the north and not defending Midway. Operation MI was the attack on Midway. The Japanese would destroy Midway and then would attack any other U.S. forces that came later to help defend Midway (White 5). The Battle of Midway began on June 4, 1942. The group of Japanese ships, called the Main Body, sat and waited in the water for the American forces. Earlier, Americans discovered coded messages that were sent between Japanese ships and bases. Admiral Nimitz signalled that every Ameircan ship should come to Pearl Harbor if possible. The Americans now knew how big the Japanese army was and that the Japanese would attack Midway. Battle Of Midway Research Paper Background Information Battle of Midway was a great naval battle between the United State and the Empire of Japan during World War II, which was lasted for 5 days (4th – 7th June 1942) and located in the Pacific Theater (see Fig 1). Due to the rampant fanaticism in Japan about expanding territory via colonization, the Empire of Japan aimed to claim the naval supremacy in the central Pacific region, which was also the main aim of this battle. However, this was contrary to America's ideology that threatened its hegemony in the Pacific region. It was a decisive contest for naval authority in the Pacific Theater between the United States Navy and the Japanese Imperial Navy (pacificwar, 2016). Nimitz led the United States and Isoroku Yamamoto led the Japanese navy. It was a turning point in the Pacific war, because this battle was the first decisive victory for the Allied Forces against the Imperial Japanese Navy. The Battle of Midway altered the balance of naval superiority, demonstrating the capable power and proficiency of the U.S. navy. They destroyed Japan's first–line carrier strength and best–trained naval pilots, which decreased the threat of Japanese expansion in the Pacific (Britannica). Japan had won many other battles after Pearl Harbor and was particularly strong in the Pacific. The Japanese plan, like the earlier attack on Pearl Harbor, tried to eliminate the United States being the main ruler in the Pacific. This would give Japan the opportunity to establish its Greater East Asia Co–Prosperity Sphere. The Japanese hoped that another discouraging lose would force the United States to surrender in the Pacific War, guaranteeing Japan the dominance in the Pacific (Museum of Military Memorabilia). Because the Japanese wanted to seize Midway and attack the United States, Commander Yamamoto Isoroku sent out the Japanese navy including four heavy and three light aircraft carriers. He ordered the soldiers to occupy and destroy the American fleet and invade Midway. However, the U.S. intelligence was already aware of Japanese intentions after breaking their naval code. With this advantage the United States prepared three heavy aircraft carriers. These ships were placed 350 miles northeast of Midway and awaited the move of Yamamoto's navy. It was quite an amazing battle because the Japanese should have won, but the Americans out smarted them, hacking naval codes, being ready, and being where they needed to be at the right time. The Americans took down the Japanese keeping control of Midway. The battle of Midway between the Americans and the Japanese was the most decisive naval battle in history it was the turning point because it brought the Americans into the forefront of the war that eventually helped defeat Hitler. The Japanese Threat During the time between Pearl Harbor and Midway, the Americans attacked Japan several times and Japan decided to strike back at Midway. Because the Japanese had so many more forces, they were expected to win (Wildenberg,2006). The defenders of Midway would have had excellent observation and fields of fire into attacking enemy aircraft. This would have hindered the Japanese and their ability to advance undetected towards the island, as they would have been easy to spot against the backdrop of the horizon. • 133. The Battle of Midway The Battle of Midway The United States faced the Japanese in the Pacific Ocean during World War II in what was later known as some of the most gruesome battles in either country's history. The Pacific theatre of World War II consisted of a series of bloody conflicts in which the United States responded to early Japanese victories with an offensive campaign that won a decisive victory for the Allies. Although many significant battles were fought in the Pacific, the most important battle was the Battle of Midway, because it was a decisive victory for the Allies that changed the course of the war completely. The United States officially joined World War II on December 8, 1941, the day after the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor and the loss of more than 2,000 lives. However, American forces were already on the defensive as the Japanese military pushed British Borneo, Hong Kong, Guam, and the Philippines. The battle that occurred at Luzon was a devastating defeat, resulting 76,000 American soldiers surrendering to Japanese forces. These men were forced to march from Bataan, a long and terrible journey in which thousands of men were killed by Japanese soldiers, malnutrition, and diseases such as malaria. Losing the Philippines was disastrous; the Bataan death march and the defeat of General MacArthur seriously damaged the morale of the American people. Aesthetics In 1943: The Battle Of Midway Aesthetics 1943: The Battle of Midway is one of many commercially and critically successful games from the golden age of arcade video games that are remembered. The graphics in Galaga matches nicely with the optical experience/flow of the games design. [Fig.5] The aesthetics in 1943: The Battle of Midway are extremely effective; the use of CRT fixed colours for the monitor completely determined the game's visual style. The scene creates a kind of 'hyper–real' look, which fits perfectly with the theme. This resulted back with the objects in the game being more emphasized and making the gamer more aware of where everything is. 1943's aesthetics attempts to put the player in the middle of the action. This is clear from the very outset. The first think that the player engages with is the cabinet itself, prior to any engagement with the game itself. The design of the cabinet has gone through a number of iterations. The original is the most functional in terms of aesthetics. Despite similar technology to 1942, the sequel 1943 was far more advanced in terms of graphics. Unlike earlier arcade games such as Space Invaders, Asteroids was entirely monochrome with white lines on a jet–black background, 1943 provides the player not only with more colours but also with greater ... In this fashion, the attrition mechanic limits the usefulness of the high firing rate and encourages accuracy in shooting. The Turning Point Of War: The Battle Of Midway World War Two was fought between the Allied and the Axis powers. The Japanese joined in the war because they wanted to expand their control over the Pacific, something that the United States also wanted more control over. This is what lead to the bombing of Pearl Harbour. Japan wanted the United States out of the Pacific. The war in the Pacific made opportunity for creative battle strategies, considering it wasn't the typical battlefield. Strategists had to navigate the ocean as well as take and keep control of islands that were far apart. The Battle of Midway took place from June 4th to June 7th, 1942, About six months after the bombing of Pearl Harbour. Midway is about 1,300 miles northwest of Oahu. The Battle of Midway is considered to be the key turning point in the war between the United States and Japan. The Americans lost one aircraft carrier, one destroyer, 150 aircraft, and 307 personnel. Historically, Midway has been considered the turning point in the Pacific theater of World War II. Japan's shipbuilding and pilot training programs were unable to keep pace in replacing their losses, while the U.S. steadily increased its output in both areas that inevitably led denying Japan the ability to achieve its limited policy objective: to destroy the American carrier force in the Pacific and use the Aleutians and Midway Island as stepping stones for a Japanese ... Nimitz was able to position the fleet out of the Japanese carrier's striking range and hide fall under the protection of land based air at Midway. Aligning the three carriers and land–based air power was instrumental in matching and defeating the larger and more competent Japanese fleet. On the Japanese side of intelligence, Yamamoto believed to have the element of surprise at Midway, which was thought to draw the Americans out of Pearl Harbor. Yamamoto had numerical naval superiority in the Pacific to defeat the Americans at sea but remained unaware that the code breakers ascertained its operational and strategic plan to attack at Midway.
