The Issue Of Tobacco Advertising
The issue of how tobacco companies try to influence teenagers into adulthood to consume tobacco was further highlighted in a legal case in the US that
resulted in a ban on certain adverts that were said to attract the young into smoking Camel cigarettes.
The supporters made a strong argument on the financial contribution of the tobacco industry to the Indian economy, in that they showed that not only
the profits made in tax were low, but the spending made on health as a result of smoking, surpassed the tax profits by one third of the tax revenue. In
regards to lost jobs as a result of decreased sales of tobacco products, it was claimed that a study found that there was a good chance for job creation, as
consumers will shift their money to other industries that require more workers than the tobacco industry.
Supporters of the ban used a research made by the World Bank which highlighted the positive results a total ban on tobacco advertising had in other
countries across the world. The same results were found by the UK government and these were presented by the supporters to strengthen their case.
Another robust piece of evidence was a research by the International Union against Cancer that clearly showed a slump in tobacco use of 14 to 37%
following a total ban of tobacco advertising. These reliable scientific pieces of evidence clearly showed that a ban on advertising of tobacco products
does work.

Introduction
Advertising in general influences everyone in many ways, particularly children imperiled by advertisements and its effects. (Raju & Lonial, 1989) I
think it is an important topic to protect the children from advertising, specifically from tobacco advertising, because we all know that smoking is not
good for your health, might cause cancer and could lead on to death.
Statement of Purpose
I want to show some examples of tobacco advertising and discuss especially why the industry selected children as a target group with a short history
and giving some examples how they targeting children. I also want to share the advertising regulations that were made all over the world to restrict
tobacco advertising in the countries particularly to children.

Research also showed that smoking bans not only enhanced the environment but also people's professional
prospects. People simply used their finances on purchasing items other than tobacco. This could lead to more jobs the researched showed. According
to the study the numerous countries that had such advertising plans should great drops in consumer usage amongst the population. So with the
added benefits of better health, The proponents of the ban were totally against the big brother effect. Government is and shall not be in the business
of telling the people what to do, how to live their lives, what to consume. Why get in the way of a profitable industry; which makes money for the

these products contribution of these products to the national GDP cannot be neglected. As a result, of the huge sum, the government gets from these

to the advertising of tobacco products. By 2001 many other nations had already decided to either place bans on or strongly restrict the advertising of
tobacco products in an attempt to curb usage and thereby avoid the ill health effects associated with the product. While the notion of banning
advertisement had and continues to have many supporters, there are also critics who claim that banning advertising is akin to restricting rights and

The second reason why tobacco advertising attracting teenagers should be forbidden is the positive impression which teenagers get from tobacco

The arguments in favor of the ban on tobacco related advertising in India are plentiful. First, proponents of the ban assert that the state has the right to
intervene in the name of public health. Second, there are other precedents for dangerous or potentially dangerous products' advertising being restricted
such as firearms or pharmaceuticals. Third, tobacco related deaths are projected to increase over the next few years and we need to take action to stem
the flow of new users. Fourth, youth targeted advertising campaigns are wrong and the tobacco industry's own released documents indicate that the
14–24 year old demographic is targeted as "tomorrow's cigarette business", these campaigns need to stop to reduce the number of young people
getting addicted to cigarettes. Fifth, policies aimed at reducing tobacco use are forecast to increase employment despite the tobacco industry itself
contracting due to the fact that the money spent on tobacco products does not leave the economy if not spent on those products but actually is used on
more complex products. Finally, complete bans on tobacco marketing result in reduced use of tobacco products over time according to studies in
Norway, Finland, New Zealand and France, but the ban needs to cover all media outlets.

The topic for this case study is the ethics of government policy in regards to a ban on advertising for tobacco smoking. On Feb 6, 2001, the
Government of India announced they would impose a ban on advertising for tobacco smoking. Healthcare reports identified smoking tobacco was the
leading cause of preventable deaths. Smoking tobacco caused cancer, lung disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema and
chronic bronchitis. The increase in illness and death related to tobacco smoking prompted the Indian Government to propose a ban of all forms of

At this point I have smoked cigarettes for approximately ten years. I have a daughter, husband, and a blossoming career in the nursing field. I
know the need to quit smoking is there for all the reasons I stated, but the habit remains. In the past, I have tried nicotine gum and the prescription
Chantix in efforts to quit but my addiction remains. I had a brief period of success, lasting five months without a single cigarette, but quickly

Ban Tobacco Advertising Is The Right Move
Introduction
In 2001, the Government of India proposed a bill that would place a ban on tobacco ads to discourage the use of tobacco products among the
teenagers. This decision gave rise to a huge debate about the ethical responsibility of the government on the use of tobacco products. In this analytical
essay, the arguments of the proponents that are both in favor and opposed to the ban will be summarized, while discussing the conflict of interest that
exists among the government and the tobacco companies. Lastly, final thoughts and opinions will be provided of why the Government of India 's
decision to ban tobacco advertising was the right move. This will be done in light of the case study found at icmrindia.org titled "Ban on tobacco Ads
by the Government of India".

Those in favor put forth the argument that smoking kills millions of people every year and that these figures are on the rise. Furthermore, that animated
figures such as that of "Joe Camel" cigarettes is enticing young children to take up smoking is a huge concern. They also point out the examples of
other nations which have deemed it constitutional to place such bans on tobacco advertising. They claim that studies have shown that in these countries
the consumption of tobacco products among the younger crowd has dropped. It is also claimed that the ban itself won 't hurt the economy because in

Some of the arguments which support the placing of the tobacco advertising ban in India are:
В· Some might feel that people's freedom of choice is being affected by this ban imposed by the government but it could also be argued the state
should be able to intervene in a situation where its subordinates' health is at risk, just like a father looks after his underage baby who is not aware of

The Issue Of Tobacco Advertising The issue of how tobacco companies try to influence teenagers into adulthood to consume tobacco was further highlighted in a legal case in the US that resulted in a ban on certain adverts that were said to attract the young into smoking Camel cigarettes. The supporters made a strong argument on the financial contribution of the tobacco industry to the Indian economy, in that they showed that not only the profits made in tax were low, but the spending made on health as a result of smoking, surpassed the tax profits by one third of the tax revenue. In regards to lost jobs as a result of decreased sales of tobacco products, it was claimed that a study found that there was a good chance for job creation, as consumers will shift their money to other industries that require more workers than the tobacco industry. Supporters of the ban used a research made by the World Bank which highlighted the positive results a total ban on tobacco advertising had in other countries across the world. The same results were found by the UK government and these were presented by the supporters to strengthen their case. Another robust piece of evidence was a research by the International Union against Cancer that clearly showed a slump in tobacco use of 14 to 37% following a total ban of tobacco advertising.
