Example Of A Public Speaking Community
Discourse Community Analysis Do you fear of speaking in the public? If yes, you might be one of
seventy–four percentage of Americans who suffer from 'glossophobia' – a public speaking anxiety
(source: 'National Institute of Mental Health', 23 Nov. 2013). You might also be surprised to know
that a large number of people fear of speaking in the public than their death. Well, I was also afraid
of presenting in the crowd some years ago when I was in the high school, but now I can effectively
do it. The following essay is to convey to you, my classmates and my instructor, how I effectively
joined a public speaking community by learning presentation and persuasive skills as well as by
proving myself above board. After completing my high school, I was in the application process for
my further studies. I got an opportunity to join this community when I was in the capital of my
country – Kathmandu. The public speaking community I joined was named 'SMART CLUB', a
group of more than fifty high school graduates who endeavored to be successful speakers. The
purpose of this club was to train the members to speak in the public effectively by providing a
platform to learn how to present themselves into the public. The meetings were held every Saturday
morning from 6 am to 9 am, where three speakers would speak in any of the pre–decided, self–
decided or impromptu topics each. There were two commentators who used to comment on two
areas: the way of presentation and the content of the speech.

The Importance Of A Speech On The Audience
When making a speech, it is important that the speaker understands who their audience is. By
understanding the characteristics of their listeners, the speaker is able to tailor their speech so that it
involves topics that interest the audience. The listeners will then be more attentive and interest in
listening to the message. In this Communication class, my classmates are my audience because they
are the ones who will be listening and giving me feedback. In order to make effective speeches,
there are specific characteristics that I must take into consideration to make sure that I modify my
speeches according to their values and interests so that they will listen attentively.
Knowing the demographics of my audience beforehand can really help me prepare for the message
of my speech. Therefore, a characteristic of my listeners is that they are all young adults between the
ages of seventeen and twenty–one. In order to appeal to this age group, I must make sure that the
topic that I choose to present must be something that this age group values so that they 'll show
interest. Also, I must make sure any references or words I use must be something that they all can
understand or relate to. If I am using a reference or word that they do not understand, I have to make
sure that I include enough explanation or content for them to understand. By providing sufficient
amount of explanation or examples, my listeners will not be lost or confused.
Another characteristic of my audience

Men have a right to decide, control, and judge us as well. As result, whenever I am in front of
public, I decide not to fully engage in conversation. All my interventions are limited with brief
comments about what is being discussed. I believe that is the mean reason why I am not feeling
fully comfortable to talk in front of audience. The oriental culture that I grew up in plays a vital role
to impact my way of delivering my speech, thoughts, and concerns. Regardless of those facts, I am
fully aware that public speaking is a task that each one of us should master. This is the reason why I
am here at Valencia. Assigning for this class is one of the steps that I choose to overcome my
weaknesses. I decide to be myself not someone else. My expected goals that I would love to gain
from this class are: learning how to overcome the stage fright, being organized during my
presentations, and finding a style that will allow me to convince my audience. After watching the
video and reading the assigned article, I came to the following results: in order to be organized in
my presentations, I should gather my thoughts and try to be specific rather than talking abroad. In

Audience Analysis Paper When it comes to writing and presenting a speech, the audience is a big
factor to account for. Who are you speaking to? How do you grab their attention? Where, when, and
why are you speaking to these people? There are a lot of things to consider when there is a
presentation to be given. When analyzing an audience, there is a process in which to go about doing
so. First, identify the characteristics of your audience, whether demographic or situational, then ask
yourself what techniques can help you meet the audience characteristics, and finally what are some
potential problems that could go along with your analysis. By analyzing your audience, ... Show

Definition Publicistic style of speech represents a functional version of a literary language and will
widely be applied in various spheres of a public life: in newspapers and magazines, on TV and
radio, in public political performances, and public associations. Here it is necessary to add the

The types of texts that are distinguished by the pragmatic aspect of the communication are called
functional styles of language (FS); the special media of language which secure the desirable effect
of the utterance are called stylistic devices (SD) and expressive means (EM). ' . .
The first field of investigation, i.e. SDs and EMs, necessarily touches upon such general language
problems as the aesthetic function of language, synonymous ways of rendering one and the same
idea, emotional colouring in language, the interrelation between language and thought, the
individual manner of an author in making use of language and a number of other issues.
The second field, i.e. functional styles, cannot avoid discussion of such most general linguistic
issues as oral and written varieties of language, the notion of the literary (standard) language, the
constituents of texts larger than the sentence, the generative aspect of literary texts, and some others.
The word s t у I e is derived from the Latin word 'stylus' which meant a short stick sharp at one end
and flat at the other used by the Romans for writing on wax tablets. Now the word 'style is used in
so many senses that it has become a breeding ground for ambiguity. The word is applied to the
teaching of how to write a composition (see below); it is also used to reveal the correspondence
between thought and expression; it frequently denotes an individual manner of making use of
language; it

Rhetorical Analysis
Oratory is about getting the job done as quickly as possible and not how efficiently or the best way
to fulfill it. With Socrate's discussion with Callicles, he determines what he is looking to fulfill and
what oratory accomplishes, he declares, "I'd like to find out from the man what his craft can
accomplish, and what it is that he both makes claims about and teaches" (Plato, 1987, p.2). Oratory
has the power to persuade people into specific ways of thinking and producing information on what
is being told. I see it as being a public speaker is essentially being an orator, not only is the orator
expressing their beliefs to the public, but they are also persuading their viewers into believing they
are skilled and how they should follow their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

A Reflection On My Values Speech
By reflecting upon my Values Speech, I will be more aware of what skills I have already
accomplished and what skills I need to improve on in order to prepare myself better for the next big
speech as well as to further improve my public speaking skills. Now that I look back at the
recording of my presentation, I clearly saw strengths that were shown, but there were also
weaknesses that I revealed, diminishing the overall powerful effect that my speech should have
gave. As I watched Amy Cuddy's TED talk called "Your body language shapes who you are", I
learned more about body language and what I should've done when I presented my Values Speech.
Throughout my reflection, I will discuss my strengths that I portrayed during my speech such as
pacing and eye contact as well as the limitations, for instance, stuttering and abruptly finishing my
sentences, and then I will finish off my reflection with the levels of confidence and body language I
portrayed.
First off, there were many strengths that I believed were demonstrated within my Values Speech
such as pacing and eye contact with my fellow classmates, but despite the strengths that were seen,
the weaknesses of stuttering and finishing sentences abruptly created a weak feeling at the end of
my presentation. As I watched the recording of my presentation on repeat, I noticed that my pacing
was very well executed. I didn't speak too fast nor did I speak too slow, which is good because my
classmates were able to follow along with what I was saying. Not only that, but I also provided eye
contact to my classmates, showing that I was well prepared and did not need to read my note cards
as much. Of course, with strengths, there were also weaknesses portrayed. I often stuttered at a
couple of phrases because of my anxiety and I would also finish some of my sentences abruptly,
leaving a poor execution. I realized that once I began saying a certain sentence and mess up mid–
way through, I would end the sentence with words that wouldn't be as clear. Now knowing my
weaknesses and strengths, I will better prepare myself for my next upcoming speech by practicing
my speeches with more word choices when I say it verbally, allowing myself to become more aware

when I was confused, and felt overwhelmed, I found the Trevor Project website. Simple things
saying, "Talk to me" and "It Get's Better" let me know, that I could make it through the night. After I
joined TrevorSpace, I learned that there were kids just like me, in the same situations, and people all
around me, just waiting for me to open my mouth, and talk. And even if there wasn't anyone, the
Trevor Lifeline was open, giving me reassurance, that if I had nowhere else to turn, I could always

Professor Workm Speech Analysis
Coming into this semester, I was scared that I was taking a speech class. The thought of speaking in
front of a group of people did not fit well with me. I knew in order to earn the grade I wanted, I had
to do speeches. I did not know the class would only be about 25 kids, so that made it easier.
Professor Workman did her best to make sure we weren't nervous or had any anxiety before our
speeches which helped a lot. Throughout the semester we had to do a total of 2 speeches. One
speech was an informative speech and the other was persuasive. The first speech was the
informative speech. I believe this speech was a bit easier due to the fact we had a PowerPoint to

improvement overall is that I am now confident in my public speaking abilities and yes there will
always be a little nervousness but no anxiety. I have become a more confident speaker compared to
what I was before I took this class. Although the progress is not huge, it is progress and I am very
satisfied with the progress I have made throughout this semester. I cannot wait to use the skills I

Fish Out Of Water Speech
The Fish Out of Water Feeling like a fish out of water is a hard emotion or feeling for me to feel. I
pride myself in being an outspoken leader. Situations where I need to adapt or change I don't panic.
One example would be public speaking. By simply understanding that once I start, it'll be over soon,
is good enough for me. I've been like this most my life except for one day that I can remember.
When I was in elementary school, I was nominated to speak. I was graduating the third grade and
was chosen by faculty to speak about my experience as a third grader and what to expect in the
fourth grade. I also was nominated to model the upcoming school's uniforms. These were great
honors that I was grateful, and scared to attend. The fear that clouded my heart was colossal. I can
remember practicing every day and night. I've never had to speak in front of the whole school prior
to this and it had me super nervous. My days and nights were filled with tremendous amounts of
time spent practicing my speech. I was required to speak for ten minutes and that ten minutes felt
like forever. My mother gave me a few pointers that still stick with me to this day. My mother taught
me a lot about public speaking. One of those important messages were speak with confidence. When
you speak confidently about something, others believe what you're saying. You must speak as
though you're confident about every word that comes out. When speaking, if I give too much eye
contact, I used to get tongue

Essay about Speechmaking vs. Oration
Speechmaking vs. Oration
In Plato's dialogue, Gorgias, Socrates raises the issue of speechmaking. He asks his interlocutors to
refrain from making speeches in their usual drawn on manner, and to simply answer his questions.
While, for the most part, the three sophists avoid long speeches, Socrates himself often makes
comments at length. His questioning, while usually short and to the point, at times takes on aspects
of the same methods that he chastises his conversationalists for. Socrates' speeches, however, avoid
the use of oratory and rhetoric language. While he does make extended statements, he does not
attempt to use his speeches to push his opinions, but rather, to explain his thoughts in greater detail.
Unlike the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He poses questions to himself, such as "Tell me Socrates, what is the art of arithmetic?" (451),
merely to show Gorgias what type of answers he expects.
Hypothetical questioning is a reoccurring theme in Socrates' many speeches during the dialogue. He
does so during his conversations with all three interlocutors and it is this subtle difference that
distinguishes his speeches from those of Polus and Callicles. By stating his beliefs in the form of
hypothetical questions, as he does with Gorgias (451–2), and then later with Polus (469) and
Callicles (493), Socrates avoids making forcefully opinionated statements. When he does choose to
push his opinions, he invites his interlocutors to "hear what I have to say and then raise objections if
you like." (478) For the most part, Socrates' speeches are based solely upon further explaining his
points, rather than all at once forming and concluding his opinions.
In the case of Polus and Callicles, it is evident that their training as sophists is used throughout their
dialogue. Both often find themselves being led in a discussion by Socrates, only to have to fight
their way out by use of rhetoric speeches. Despite their efforts, however, Socrates is neither
impressed nor deceived.
Before his dialogue with Polus, Socrates asks that he "keep in check the tendency to make long
speeches which [he] showed at the beginning of our

Frederick Douglass Speech Essay
Justified Words
Interlacing flawed feelings within a speech can be very stupefying to an audience. The majority of
the time either the orator is being narcissistic, fumbling over their own words, or their choice of
words see, spurious and somewhat timid, not actually presenting the point. Two honorable mentions
that actually have a notable speech are Frederick Douglass and Chief Seattle in the mid–1800s.
Feelings can always be flowed, but these two men presented amazing speeches that overall lacked
any falsehood within them. Both men saw the reality of the world during the time period they lived
in. Not only were they aware of it, many people were afraid to speak out against the wrongness of
the world then, but they were not afraid. Both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The speeches given by both men sever an absolute purpose. Whether or not the point does not seem
justifiable to a reader, the more one is to understand the speech, the more it would in fact be
justifiable. From reading both of them, it can be determined that each man had hope, regardless of
what was going on in the world. Douglass mentioned cleanly where his hope was formed, and why
he still had that hope. 'the arm of the Lord is not shortened," were Douglass's exact words. Words
that may somehow be an illusion unrecognizable to the uneducated but a deeper meaning lies within
Douglass's words. A meaning that represents his purpose for his people.
Seattle's words reside with the same effect. "Our God is the same God. You may think that you own
him as you wish to own our land, but you cannot. He is the Body of man, and his compassion is
equal for the Redman and the white." Seattle's faith is no short coming of his speech.
The emotion given by both men was rightfully crestfallen. And in the most of the speeches neither
men ever spoke with gratitude about themselves, or came across as thinking they had done
something more than others had. They simply spoke of what was, and encouraged change.
One comparison of both men's speeches is that both men spoke in a direct jarring diction appeal to
the audience. By using diction, whatever they were saying, however they were wanting it to come
across was very prominent, but in a fashioned manner. Which is one reason why

Importance Of Public Speaking Speech
Before I started taking UMUC SPCH 100, I never encountered a situation where I had to use public
speaking skills at all. Just the thought of having to speak in front of a class as a requirement made
me nervous. But that wasn't the only challenge I was facing mentally. Since I never had any public
speaking experience before, things such as body language, tone, eye contact, etc. were easily
forgotten since my last speech class over five years ago. All of that was easily spotted in the process
of making my self–introduction video when I kept deciding to do retakes repeatedly. In the end, I
managed to produce a product that would keep me from failing but it was nothing that I could be
proud of.
When it came time for the second speech to be due I was relieved almost that it would be another
prerecorded session. I thought about how I could have sort of cheat the fundamentals of public
speaking by just doing retakes any time I messed up. But my luck ran out when it was changed to an
in–class project where we would use our peers as an interview partner. I was glad that we have been
doing a few impromptu speeches up to this point. Without any sort of warm up beforehand it would
have been a far worse speech than it already was. After interviewing my partner, I thought I had
compiled enough information but I failed to transition it to a well–organized speech. I took this as a
good wakeup call that I really needed to practice the basic of public speaking. After delivering my

Before Parent's Oratory Night
"Grab a pencil, show emotion and be ready to present your piece" those were the commands that I
would always hear every time I entered the drama classroom for Oratory practice. These words
shook me up and often made me question why I joined the team in the first place, if I was too shy to
present my piece even to my teammates. I would always make up an excuse in order to escape
presenting my piece. Time passed and I kept avoiding my piece, but the competition was a week
away and the Parent's Oratory Night, an activity where we present our pieces to our parents and the
student body, was one day away. I still remember how much I cried the night before Parent's Night;
my fear was getting the worst out of me. I thought that I couldn't do it, so I made my decision; I was

opportunity that will change your life forever, and in the future, you will strongly regret your

The second step of this sequence, is so important because it is in it that the speaker works to get the
audience to feel a need or want, convinces the audience there's a problem. The set of statements
uttered by the speaker must help the audience realize that what's happening right now isn't good
enough – and it needs to change. The third is satisfaction, it is the solution to the problem (need).
The speaker can't offer a solution, without first clearly stating what the problem or need is.

Polus Vs Plato
Plato makes the distinction between an orator and a philosopher in the Gorgias, by using characters
such as Polus and Socrates. He also uses these characters to illustrate that Socratic discussion––not
oratory––is the only legitimate philosophical path of finding the truth way to discovering the truth.
Plato does this by orchestrating the debate between Polus and Socrates and later showing that
Socrates developed the idea of happiness in his last refutation.
In the beginning of the book, Plato orchestrates banter between Chaerephon and Polus to illustrate
his opinions on oratory and show that careful speechmaking often avoids the question instead of
directly searching for the truth. In the banter Chaerephon asks Polus' opinion on the title ... Show

Plato utilized Polus to show that orators are never subject to any deeper thought because they are not
questioned by others with different schools of thought. He, however, uses Socrates to exemplify that
a true philosopher utilizes discussion to deepen his own thoughts. Polus had a view on happiness as
a feeling in the moment, which is only analyzing happiness surface level. This led him to believe
that tyrants such as the Great King are happy despite the injustices they commit (471 a– 471 d).
However, Socrates views true happiness as a state of being in which one receives a favorable
judgement in the afterlife (525 a– 525d). Their discussion shows that the comparisons of both their
beliefs and a development of the idea of happiness could not have been brought to light without
Socratic discussion. Plato shows that all parties benefit from Socratic discussion in developing
philosophical thought because Socrates did not mention punishment in any of his previous
refutations until Polus brought the idea to light. This ultimately shows that Socratic discussion is the
only way to discover the truth because it instigates a conversation between different schools of
thought. The idea of punishment influencing happiness is developed in Socrates' last refutation,
showing how

Oratory Physical Strength Categories
When talking about physical strengths, most people think you are referring to athletic ability, but
physical strengths also include many other bodily actions (Millard 112). Physical strengths can be
broken up into eight main categories: muscular strength, artistry, music, mechanics, craftsmanship,
oratory, flexibility, and appearance (Millard 114–117). When thinking of what physical strengths
you have, you can classify them based on these eight categories. Personally, I excel at the oratory
physical strength. Throughout my life, I feel I have been most accomplished in very few of the
physical strength categories. When I was little, there were no major things that I can remember

Ancient Oratory Essay
John Quincy Adams believed the art of oratory was the highest form of power a citizen could
possess in a republic. At the end of his inaugural lecture, Adams lectured to his students the
importance of studying ancient rhetoric and the lessons that could be learned from it. Adams
believed the study of ancient rhetoric would prepare students to consecrate their abilities to the
cause of truth, freedom, and humanity. In this paper, I will defend Adam's position by presenting
parallels between his ideology and that of two selected works of ancient oratory. I will evaluate an
Ancient Athenian work by Thucydides titled: the Mytilenian debate, and an ancient Roman work by
Livy titled: History of Rome. I will show how these two works reinforce Adam's belief that ancient
oratory could assist his students in becoming better civic leaders and how contemporary American
students can do the same. The democratic republic of the United States could be argued as one of the
greatest forms of government the world has ever seen. A form of government which relies on the
hopes that its' political processes represent a form of truth to create transparency, a concept of
freedom that allows all citizens the right of participation, and a sense of humanity that reinforces the
greatness of a nation. In the ancient oratory of Thucydides Mytilenian debate, we discover Athens is
sending a trireme to kill all the men of Mytilene and enslave all the women and children. However,

Audience Responses
Different responses to standing in front of an audience arise depending on the reason I am up there.
For instance, when I am giving a speech I have much more trouble than when I am acting. Speeches
often give me anxiety. I start to shake and get jittery and sweaty. Sometimes I bite my lip, shake my
leg, or pace. In other words, I have a response similar to what most people call stage fright. It
becomes hard to stand still. I constantly worry about what people think. The classic
visions/nightmares of being naked in front of an audience occur. I freak. One thing that has been
pointed out to me numerous times is that when I give a speech, I sound like I am holding back tears

Satan as portrayed by John Milton is a very different kind of a character. Abercrombie remarks
"Paradise Lost exists for one figure that is Satan". He is also the most important character of the
epic. The leader of the rebel–angels in Heaven and the uncrowned monarch of Hell, Satan uses his
words tactfully which helps know his personality. When we hear the word, Satan, we immediately
think evil. Evilness is the trademark of Satan's personality but Satan actually has characteristics of a
respectable person, which is quite evident through his speeches. Satan's character is multifaceted
and can be interpreted in numerous lights.

says a lot about our character. The way one speaks to others can jeopardize the amount of respect
and trust others have for them. From the way one pronounces a word to their posture can affect the
way an audience interprets what is being said. Personally, I am not confident with my speaking
skills at this point. I would like my audience to fully comprehend the concepts or facts that I would
present to them. In order to do so I must improve my speaking skills I believe that a problem most
people, including myself, have when giving speeches is facing an audience. Just looking out to an

The whole point of a speech is to get a message across to an audience or a group of people. If you
speed through a speech and just mumble, you are not only wasting your own time but your
audiences' as well.
When giving a speech it is handy to have a list of key concepts with you that you want to get across
to your audience. Writing out your whole speech will not do. Writing out your full speech may cause
you to have your head buried in your notes for your entire presentation. As a high school student
you can get away with this, but in the real world no one will trust you unless you look them in the
eye when talking to them. I must admit that it is very hard for me to look at people when I am giving
a speech, but it is imperative that I do so. I not only want my audience to understand what I am
trying to say to them, but I want them to believe me as well. Also, when you don't face your
audience they tend to lose interest and start conversations or activities of their own. In order to gain
the trust and respect of your audience, it is absolutely necessary to look them in the eye when
speaking to them.
I hate it when people speak in monotone, but it happens to the best of us. It is so boring to hear a
speech that is given in a monotonous voice without any variety in their tone. Speaking in monotone
puts your audience to sleep. This can happen to anyone who is reading their speech word for word.
It has happened to me, and before I knew it my

Steve Jobs Address Rhetorical Analysis
The "Steve Jobs Commencement Address" speech by Steve Jobs is recognized as one of the best
speech because of how he connected with his audience. In public speaking we learn how to create
our own speeches. Since ancient times a predominant way students learn about speech making is
through analysis, interpretation and evaluation of how others have created their speeches. Today I
will analysis exemplary speech by Steve Jobs through five canons of rhetoric and modes of
Persuasion. Steve Jobs starts his speech by saying "I am honored to be with you today at your
commencement form one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college.
Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you
three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories." Steve jobs clearly start his
speech using first canons of rhetoric: invention. Invention is the most difficult phase in creating a
speech since you have to lay the groundwork for all the other phases in your speech. In invention
phase you have to consider your audience, means of persuasion, and evidence. Steve Jobs uses "I" in
his first paragraph to show that this speech is going to be about his personal experience. He also
tries to build the groundwork in his first few sentences to tell what his three stories form his life are
going to be about. Steve jobs talked about his experience in college since ... Show more content on

Therefore, Steve jobs chose a conversational style for his speech which was great decision since
almost all his audience were college students. His speech was clear and simple and it was easily

he used logical argument to show his emotions to his audience and those arguments or his
experiences enhanced his overall credibility

Reflection Paper
GLPO Spring Semester This semester has been an interesting one in every subject. Though only a
few were particularly amazing. In biology I grew globally because I now know what climates are in
different parts of the world. For example the Tundra is located in Northern Canada and Greenland.
In Drama I grew socially because the class performed a play called Personal Statement and the
actors and I promoted the play through social media. Finally, I grew academically in english. In here
I learned how to properly write and deliver a speech. This can help me out so much in the future
because i will be able to write a more detailed resume. The most important thing to remember about
speeches is that the longer you practice it the better it sounds my favorite experience in the unit was
going to the theater because it was something new for me. The biggest challenge for me was coming
up with the wedding toast because I had no idea what Friar Francis would say if he were there.
Something I learned from public speaking was it takes a long time to get it down perfect. The speech
had many difficulties for me but the biggest one was probably keeping a straight face while
delivering it. In the future I will try to prepare more than I did before I give my speech. Also, I'll
stay in character so it's more realistic. Something I did really well was probably my speech details
because I tried my best to implement as many details as I possibly could from the play. The biggest

Martin Luther King's Speech And I Have A Dream Speech...
Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech and King George VI's wartime speech are equally
well–written and spoken, while both having distinctive presentations, type of speech, and effect on
society.
The first comparison between "I Have a Dream" speech and the King's wartime speech is that they
served for different situations and how Marin Luther King's delivery was more powerful. The
purpose of MLK's speech was to call for the end racism in America to push for Civil Rights. In
doing so, MLK's presentation took place at the Lincoln Monument Memorial and was presented in
front of approximately 250,000 Civil Rights supporters. "I Have a Dream" speech touched the
audience's heart and moved them emotionally. On the other hand, King George VI needed to
announce Britain's entry into World War Two, thus he had to introduce an official declaration of war.
When the King presented his speech, he did not have a physical audience. Instead, he had the entire
British Empire to broadcast his speech over the radio. King George VI recited his speech in a
peaceful environment, in a quiet room with only his speech therapist around. The first speech
regarding warfare and his stammering issue placed the King under tremendous amounts of pressure
to recite well. The oration was well–delivered and clear. Although both speeches were under
different circumstances, the audience placed the speakers under pressure to present orally well. That
being, one can say that MLK presented his speech better while under heavy stress in front of a
physical crowd. MLK's speech demonstrated how one can move an audience with words and tone of
voice.
MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech was exceptionally well–written and orally presented based on
important factors, such as the delivery and style of the speech. In comparison with King George VI
wartime speech, the two speeches had drastically different tones and voice while presenting. An
important consideration, MLK was a confident and well–spoken person who knew how to use his
voice volume and confidence to engage the audience's attention. On the contrary, King George VI
was not a confident speaker. Furthermore, the use of rhetorical devices is highly evident in MLK's
speech as it helped with the success

Speeches Are Scary For Anyone Who Hates Public Speaking
Obviously, speeches are scary for anyone who hates public speaking. I happen to be one of those
people; I get terribly nervous see all the faces staring at me. I am nervous about that sort of stuff, but
I'm trying to get over it. Honestly, I think it was a great thing that I was able to get this speech out of
the way. Once I get through doing something like this, I tend to get a lot more comfortable
afterwards with my classmates. Doing these speeches even when I don't want to is definitely a pro;
it prepares me for the real world. I really liked the topic I presented. I felt that when I did this speech
it was much better than the last one. I believe this happened because the topic was something I have

After practicing in my basement so much I was comfortable with the topic that I didn't have say
things in order or word for word I was able to change it up on the spot. While using any type of
delivery style it is always important to have eye contact. Eye contact is a crucial part of giving a
proper speech. While I was setting up to give my speech I looked around the room to see who was
there so that I don't get distracted by seeing a new face. I established eye contact with only most of
the class because some were looking away. Keeping eye contact while I was giving my speech was
quite hard. I tried the technique of going around the room and making eye contact which each
person but that actually made me a bit more nervous. I became a bit nervous because while trying to
make eye contact I noticed a few were on their phones, and looking away. I started to feel that my
speech wasn't that good because they weren't paying attention, but I got rid of this feeling by
looking at the people that were actually paying attention. That helped get some confidence. I feel
like if when I was giving the speech if more people had smiles on their faces and not the expression
of "oh I just want to leave already" it would make giving eye contact a lot easier. Even though eye
contact is crucial part of a speech, physical delivery is key part as

My High School Campaign
As the other speakers delivered their campaign speeches, I sat incessantly shaking. My campaign for
Student Body Vice President head reached the point where I would present my campaign oratory to
the collective high school student body. Soon it would be my turn to take the podium and articulate
my reasoning in support of my candidacy. Sitting there awaiting my turn in the front, I thought back
to the year prior when I had been among the candidates for the Junior Class Vice President. During
my Junior year campaign, I plastered the walls of the campus in cheeky campaign slogans and
purposeful puns. In addition, I had shaken hands, kissed babies, and participated in other various
typical political tradecraft. The time had come for the one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

When my name was called, I rose and purposefully strode to the podium to address my audience. In
that the moment I had the eyes of hundreds of individuals, including the teachers and administrators
who recalled last year's defining moment, watching and wondering what would happen next. In the
pursuing span of minutes, I held at my disposal countless minds that could be changed and opinions
that could be influenced based on my clear and concise communication. The speech was triumphant
and to a certain extent, redemptive. To attain the long sought after and much coveted goal of a
proper speech, delivered well, was much sweeter than the ensuing campaign victory. After the
speeches and assembly concluded and the audience had dispersed, I sat alone in that same spot
realizing that I was no longer the untested apprentice. The ideas of persistence, grit, hard–work, and
preparation had actual concrete meaning to me as opposed to just being words on a page. No
physical metamorphosis had taken place, but as I walked out of that building and into the shining
Spring sun, the child who went into that building a year prior was not the man who exited today. My
thinking changed, for I now understood and embraced the age old axiom, "If you want something

Lisa, head publisher of a rising publishing firm company. She starts her day by speaking to her

all of the editors she represents. At a lunch meeting Lisa talks to the executive board on a couple of
manuscripts she has been championing. Would one think that Lisa is a public speaker? Most people
would say no, but after reading Stephen Lucas the Art of Public Speaking, I have learned that Lisa is
a public speaker and is using her public speaking skills to inform her coworkers. Chapter 15 is about
speaking to inform an audience. Lucas begins this chapter with the types of informative speeches
and some analysis and organization skills for each topic. There are many ways to classify an
informative speech, Lucas breaks it down into four main topics: objects, processes, events, and
concepts. Lucas begins this chapter by speaking on speeches about objects. Lucas defines an object
as "Objects include anything that is visible, tangible, and stable to form. ... Here are examples of
subjects for speeches about objects e–book readers, Susan B. Anthony, service dogs, titanium,
human eye and Golden Gate Bridge" (Lucas, 2012, pg. 278.). Lucas reminds us that whatever
subject a speaker will pick they must know that they will not be able to tell everything on the
subject. To instead pick the most important ideas the speaker wants to get across and use those to
develop a main point. Next Lucas shows

Throughout the public speaking course, I 've learned a variety of methods and strategies that have
strengthened the effectiveness of my last speech or any speech, that may occur in the near distant

making the same mistakes and to have a clear understanding where I may have fallen short in the
past and could improve in the future of public speaking. When constructing the persuasive speech, it
was important to use the rhetorical methods such as the a few of the 5 canons of Rhetoric as well as

In addition to class lectures as well as following along with the textbook I had collected tons of

Essay on Written Speech Analysis
Sunni Brown, the co–author of "Gamestorming: A Playbook for Innovators, Rulebreakers, and
Changemakers", makes a sound and coherently proficient case in which she suggests that the
definition of 'Doodling' be changed to "make spontaneous marks to help yourself think". Brown's
speech at the March 2011 'TED' conference in Long Beach, California before academics and her
peers, was entitled "Doodlers, unite!". She suggests in a both informative and persuasive manner
that the act of doodling is undervalued, at times ridiculed but more often than not will assist people
in learning and retaining knowledge. The speech's structure, content, implemented speech devices
and delivery will be analysed as to whether they were successful or unsuccessful. ... Show more

Brown introduction may be seen in the eyes of many as unsuccessful because of her lack of pull on
the audiences interest. It is commonly said that an audience member will make a judgement as to
whether they will pay full attention to a speaker in the first five to fifteen seconds of a speech
(Steven A. Bebe and Susan J. Bebe, 2011, p. 112). It is slightly distressing to think that some people
who are quick to judge may have missed Brown's important message because of her uninteresting
opening. She immediately follows with an establishment of her credibility, and as indicated by
Pamela Thompson (2005, p. 23), this is a highly recommended element of speech as doing so can
have a favorable effect the audience. Brown follows on by defining her problem with the wide belief
that doodling is "considered to be anti–intellectual and counter to serious learning" (Sunni Brown,
2011). It is at this juncture in her speech that Brown begins to make her first main point, 'the reality
of doodling', by giving statistics and examples of the perceptions of doodling in western society and
effectively giving the audience reasons to laugh at how they may have previously perceived the act
of doodling by weaving in thoughtful comparisons and well known research. This was greatly
effective because it created a feeling of familiarity in the audience which promotes a greater level of
audience engagement as reiterated by Patsy McCarthy and Caroline Hatcher (2002 , p. 13). Brown

Brianna is a waitress in a small town in Washington state. As she takes orders and serves food,
repeats, "Hello, my name is Brianna and I will be your waitress today. Can I start you off with a

if the steak is really as good as everyone says or how she'll celebrate her birthday in a few weeks.

What does this mean? It means that anyone in this room can fall into the vicious pulpit of Modern
Day Slavery.
As you can imagine there are hundreds of thousands of stories like Brianna's: the 31 year old
African housekeeper who was held prisoner for 22 months, sleeping on a bathroom floor and eating
rarely, the Moldovan mother who left her six year old for a business venture that did not turn out
well. The Indonesian man that wanted nothing more than to come to the U.S. to be a registered
nurse, but was deceived into a slavery. The 16 year old Chinese boy that needed to make money to
provide for his mother and two younger brothers. The 15 year old Mexican girl who was sold into
slavery by her boss for $200. After five years of imprisonment her "boss" was murdered and she was
finally liberated, only to be thrown in jail for over 20 years for that murder.
Why do these stories exist? What compels a person to enslave another? The answer to these
questions is simple a lot simpler than one might think. Most people in the community are unaware
of human trafficking, there aren't many laws that specifically address human trafficking, help isn't
typically offered to victims of human trafficking. All of these factors make it that much easier for
the traffickers to get away with their crimes. To put it in perspective, one trafficker is convicted for
every 405 slaves. Since these traffickers don't run a legal business, don't pay taxes and don't

Summary Of Angelina Grimke's Speech
Of the four oratory performances that we watched, most effective was Sydney H.'s as Angelina
Grimke because of her use of tone, hand motions, and usage of the audience. Firstly, the speech
begins with a rhetorical question. When delivering the line, Sydney's voice used a questioning tone
correctly. As the question repeated, she used the same tone but with more emphasis. Also, towards
the end of the speech, Sydney raised her voice at the correct time and transmitted empowerment to
her audience. The line was crucial to the speech, and Sydney correctly emphasized it. Within the
oratories, all of the speakers used tone well, but it stuck out to me more in Sydney's. Secondly,
Sydney's hand–motions made her oratory very effective. For example, when

Public Speech On Public Speaking
Public Speaking Goals I chose to take this course because I have enjoyed previous units I have had
about public speaking in high school English classes and it is a requirement for my major. As a pre–
pharmacy major, public speaking does not seem like a necessary class, but the more I think about
how often public speaking is used, the more I understand the reasoning for public speaking as a
required course. Public speaking is a major foundation for everyday communication. Growing up, I
can recall several common instances where I was exposed to public speaking. A guest speaker
coming to talk to our class, the priest giving a homily at mass, large assemblies with inspirational
speakers, and our graduation speech are a few examples that come to mind. Although it seems like
only famous people or teachers ever have to speak in public, in reality, almost everyone will have to
give a speech in front of a large group at some point in their lives. This is why public speaking is a
required course for most students. Public speaking is important when proposing an idea with a large
group of people, explaining a plan of action for a specific task, sharing a new medical discovery
with a group of physicians, or giving a talk on leadership to a group of business professionals. All of
these cases are applicable to almost any career, which is why it is important for all students to
understand the basics of public speaking and how to effectively communicate with a large audience.

A Reflection Of Speech
Now that day two speakers have finished their speeches, I have considered the feedback given about
my speech and compared it to other speakers in the class. I reviewed in my head what I did wrong
and went back in my mind to remember those speakers who I believed did better than me in the
categories I scored low in. We learn from each other's strengths as well as our mistakes.
Accordingly, chapter ten focuses on the beginning and ending a speech. An effective introduction
gets the speaker off on the right foot. The "right foot" means that the speaker has accomplished the
goal of a great hook to attract the audience's attention. A speaker's introduction is a way to make the
audience feel intrigued and want to continue listening so that he or she will feel as though what is
about to be said is to benefit them. An effective conclusion ends the speech on a strong note. The
"strong note" is the speaker going back to review what was previously said so that the audience can
remember that information and use it somehow in a way that the speaker intended it to be used.
During my speech, I felt that greeting my peers and informing them on what I will be speaking
about, which was introducing my partner, would be a great start for my audience to be awake and to
feel included on what they will be putting their attention on. Out of the eight methods in the first
objective, I used the last one which was gaining their attention by referring to the occasion. I

Oratory Leadership Style
According to the Spanish Royal Academy of Language, the definition of oratory is "The art of
speaking with eloquence".
On the other hand, leadership is defined as: "condition of leader", and this in turn responds to the
description of "person to which a group follows".
For me, an apprentice in oratory and leadership, the unification of both concepts leads me to the
definition that the art of speaking in public from a leadership position is the set of:
Possess the ability to handle verbal and nonverbal language effectively and dexterously.

Rhetorical Analysis Of Patrick Henry And The Massachusetts...
Oration is one of the most ancient art forms in the world and can be used to instigate wars, ally
countries, and fight for one's personal beliefs. "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" by Patrick
Henry and "To the Massachusetts Convention" by Jonathan Smith are two of the strongest orations
of the 18th century. While they are in many ways similar, they are also vastly different. Although
they both begin with the exact same address of, "Mr. President," they have many more differences,
including contexts, purposes, and rhetorical strategies. They are also given by two men who share
virtually nothing in common. Patrick Henry and Jonathan Smith both use rhetorical strategy to
address the president of their time, George Washington; however, the two speeches that develop
from those initial phrases convey completely different ideals and spur dissimilar outcomes.
As one explores the meaning of these two speeches which were both delivered during the time of
the American Revolution, many interpretations and conclusions can be drawn, but the commonly
accepted understandings of both speeches show connections and separations. As previously stated,
both of the speeches begin with the introductory phrase, "Mr. President." Patrick Henry and
Jonathan Smith were addressing George Washington ("History.org: The Colonial Williamsburg
Foundation 's Official History and Citizenship Website"), but he was not officially the president until
1778, when Jonathan Smith gave his speech. Although their first

what I was experiencing. If I was given more information about what the church's history and

sold plants and books and even snacks and drinks. It felt degraded to the actual purpose of the
Oratory. I am pleased that I went, and would like to experience more church's such as this one later

Example Of A Public Speaking Community

  • 1. Example Of A Public Speaking Community Discourse Community Analysis Do you fear of speaking in the public? If yes, you might be one of seventy–four percentage of Americans who suffer from 'glossophobia' – a public speaking anxiety (source: 'National Institute of Mental Health', 23 Nov. 2013). You might also be surprised to know that a large number of people fear of speaking in the public than their death. Well, I was also afraid of presenting in the crowd some years ago when I was in the high school, but now I can effectively do it. The following essay is to convey to you, my classmates and my instructor, how I effectively joined a public speaking community by learning presentation and persuasive skills as well as by proving myself above board. After completing my high school, I was in the application process for my further studies. I got an opportunity to join this community when I was in the capital of my country – Kathmandu. The public speaking community I joined was named 'SMART CLUB', a group of more than fifty high school graduates who endeavored to be successful speakers. The purpose of this club was to train the members to speak in the public effectively by providing a platform to learn how to present themselves into the public. The meetings were held every Saturday morning from 6 am to 9 am, where three speakers would speak in any of the pre–decided, self– decided or impromptu topics each. There were two commentators who used to comment on two areas: the way of presentation and the content of the speech. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Importance Of A Speech On The Audience When making a speech, it is important that the speaker understands who their audience is. By understanding the characteristics of their listeners, the speaker is able to tailor their speech so that it involves topics that interest the audience. The listeners will then be more attentive and interest in listening to the message. In this Communication class, my classmates are my audience because they are the ones who will be listening and giving me feedback. In order to make effective speeches, there are specific characteristics that I must take into consideration to make sure that I modify my speeches according to their values and interests so that they will listen attentively. Knowing the demographics of my audience beforehand can really help me prepare for the message of my speech. Therefore, a characteristic of my listeners is that they are all young adults between the ages of seventeen and twenty–one. In order to appeal to this age group, I must make sure that the topic that I choose to present must be something that this age group values so that they 'll show interest. Also, I must make sure any references or words I use must be something that they all can understand or relate to. If I am using a reference or word that they do not understand, I have to make sure that I include enough explanation or content for them to understand. By providing sufficient amount of explanation or examples, my listeners will not be lost or confused. Another characteristic of my audience ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Reflect on your personal fears related to public speaking. 1–What is your experience with public speaking? 2– How do you feel about public speaking? 3– Identify three positive results you would like to gain from this course (organization, speech delivery, managing anxiety, etc) Provide concrete examples of how you plan to achieve these results. In your reflection, consider incorporating some or all of the following concepts from your reading assignment and lesson; explain how they come into play in relation to those positive results: glossophobia, self–esteem, perception, confidence, and culture. As result, whenever I am in front of public, I decide not to fully engage in conversation. All my interventions are limited with brief comments about what is being discussed. I believe that is the mean reason why I am not feeling fully comfortable to talk in front of audience. The oriental culture that I grew up in plays a vital role to impact my way of delivering my speech, thoughts, and concerns. Regardless of those facts, I am fully aware that public speaking is a task that each one of us should master. This is the reason why I am here at Valencia. Assigning for this class is one of the steps that I choose to overcome my weaknesses. I decide to be myself not someone else. My expected goals that I would love to gain from this class are: learning how to overcome the stage fright, being organized during my presentations, and finding a style that will allow me to convince my audience. After watching the video and reading the assigned article, I came to the following results: in order to be organized in my presentations, I should gather my thoughts and try to be specific rather than talking abroad. Audience Analysis Of Speech Melanie Ramsey Jared Birnbaum Communications 3, 3:00 – 3:50 September 17, 2016 Audience Analysis Paper When it comes to writing and presenting a speech, the audience is a big factor to account for. Who are you speaking to? How do you grab their attention? Where, when, and why are you speaking to these people? There are a lot of things to consider when there is a presentation to be given. When analyzing an audience, there is a process in which to go about doing so. First, identify the characteristics of your audience, whether demographic or situational, then ask yourself what techniques can help you meet the audience characteristics, and finally what are some potential problems that could go along with your analysis. Introduction: Definition Publicistic style of speech represents a functional version of a literary language and will widely be applied in various spheres of a public life: in newspapers and magazines, on TV and radio, in public political performances, and public associations. Here it is necessary to add the political literature for the mass reader and documentary cinema. In various textbooks on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The types of texts that are distinguished by the pragmatic aspect of the communication are called functional styles of language (FS); the special media of language which secure the desirable effect of the utterance are called stylistic devices (SD) and expressive means (EM). ' . . The first field of investigation, i.e. SDs and EMs, necessarily touches upon such general language problems as the aesthetic function of language, synonymous ways of rendering one and the same idea, emotional colouring in language, the interrelation between language and thought, the individual manner of an author in making use of language and a number of other issues. The second field, i.e. functional styles, cannot avoid discussion of such most general linguistic issues as oral and written varieties of language, the notion of the literary (standard) language, the constituents of texts larger than the sentence, the generative aspect of literary texts, and some others. The word s t у I e is derived from the Latin word 'stylus' which meant a short stick sharp at one end and flat at the other used by the Romans for writing on wax tablets. Now the word 'style is used in so many senses that it has become a breeding ground for ambiguity. The word is applied to the teaching of how to write a composition (see below); it is also used to reveal the correspondence between thought and expression; it frequently denotes an individual manner of making use of language; it ... • 21. Rhetorical Analysis Oratory is about getting the job done as quickly as possible and not how efficiently or the best way to fulfill it. With Socrate's discussion with Callicles, he determines what he is looking to fulfill and what oratory accomplishes, he declares, "I'd like to find out from the man what his craft can accomplish, and what it is that he both makes claims about and teaches" (Plato, 1987, p.2). Oratory has the power to persuade people into specific ways of thinking and producing information on what is being told. I see it as being a public speaker is essentially being an orator, not only is the orator expressing their beliefs to the public, but they are also persuading their viewers into believing they are skilled and how they should follow their ... • 25. A Reflection On My Values Speech By reflecting upon my Values Speech, I will be more aware of what skills I have already accomplished and what skills I need to improve on in order to prepare myself better for the next big speech as well as to further improve my public speaking skills. Now that I look back at the recording of my presentation, I clearly saw strengths that were shown, but there were also weaknesses that I revealed, diminishing the overall powerful effect that my speech should have gave. As I watched Amy Cuddy's TED talk called "Your body language shapes who you are", I learned more about body language and what I should've done when I presented my Values Speech. Throughout my reflection, I will discuss my strengths that I portrayed during my speech such as pacing and eye contact as well as the limitations, for instance, stuttering and abruptly finishing my sentences, and then I will finish off my reflection with the levels of confidence and body language I portrayed. First off, there were many strengths that I believed were demonstrated within my Values Speech such as pacing and eye contact with my fellow classmates, but despite the strengths that were seen, the weaknesses of stuttering and finishing sentences abruptly created a weak feeling at the end of my presentation. As I watched the recording of my presentation on repeat, I noticed that my pacing was very well executed. I didn't speak too fast nor did I speak too slow, which is good because my classmates were able to follow along with what I was saying. Not only that, but I also provided eye contact to my classmates, showing that I was well prepared and did not need to read my note cards as much. Of course, with strengths, there were also weaknesses portrayed. I often stuttered at a couple of phrases because of my anxiety and I would also finish some of my sentences abruptly, leaving a poor execution. I realized that once I began saying a certain sentence and mess up mid– way through, I would end the sentence with words that wouldn't be as clear. Now knowing my weaknesses and strengths, I will better prepare myself for my next upcoming speech by practicing my speeches with more word choices when I say it verbally, allowing myself to become more aware of the variety of ... Unfortunately, this is the reality for me, and thousands of other teens across the United States. The only reason why they are isolated, beaten, and rejected as a whole, is because Sally likes Jane, and Jessie just wants to be Jessica. Doing things such as launching "The Day of Silence" where we acknowledge the silence that so many LGBT teens have had to face. During a time in my life, when I was confused, and felt overwhelmed, I found the Trevor Project website. Simple things saying, "Talk to me" and "It Get's Better" let me know, that I could make it through the night. After I joined TrevorSpace, I learned that there were kids just like me, in the same situations, and people all around me, just waiting for me to open my mouth, and talk. I knew in order to earn the grade I wanted, I had to do speeches. I did not know the class would only be about 25 kids, so that made it easier. Professor Workman did her best to make sure we weren't nervous or had any anxiety before our speeches which helped a lot. Throughout the semester we had to do a total of 2 speeches. One speech was an informative speech and the other was persuasive. The first speech was the informative speech. I believe this speech was a bit easier due to the fact we had a PowerPoint to somewhat help us. I believed I developed my points and supported each one using ... Situations where I need to adapt or change I don't panic. One example would be public speaking. By simply understanding that once I start, it'll be over soon, is good enough for me. I've been like this most my life except for one day that I can remember. When I was in elementary school, I was nominated to speak. I was graduating the third grade and was chosen by faculty to speak about my experience as a third grader and what to expect in the fourth grade. I also was nominated to model the upcoming school's uniforms. These were great honors that I was grateful, and scared to attend. The fear that clouded my heart was colossal. I can remember practicing every day and night. I've never had to speak in front of the whole school prior to this and it had me super nervous. My days and nights were filled with tremendous amounts of time spent practicing my speech. I was required to speak for ten minutes and that ten minutes felt like forever. My mother gave me a few pointers that still stick with me to this day. My mother taught me a lot about public speaking. One of those important messages were speak with confidence. • 41. Essay about Speechmaking vs. Oration Speechmaking vs. Oration In Plato's dialogue, Gorgias, Socrates raises the issue of speechmaking. He asks his interlocutors to refrain from making speeches in their usual drawn on manner, and to simply answer his questions. While, for the most part, the three sophists avoid long speeches, Socrates himself often makes comments at length. His questioning, while usually short and to the point, at times takes on aspects of the same methods that he chastises his conversationalists for. Socrates' speeches, however, avoid the use of oratory and rhetoric language. While he does make extended statements, he does not attempt to use his speeches to push his opinions, but rather, to explain his thoughts in greater detail. Unlike the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He poses questions to himself, such as "Tell me Socrates, what is the art of arithmetic?" (451), merely to show Gorgias what type of answers he expects. Hypothetical questioning is a reoccurring theme in Socrates' many speeches during the dialogue. He does so during his conversations with all three interlocutors and it is this subtle difference that distinguishes his speeches from those of Polus and Callicles. By stating his beliefs in the form of hypothetical questions, as he does with Gorgias (451–2), and then later with Polus (469) and Callicles (493), Socrates avoids making forcefully opinionated statements. When he does choose to push his opinions, he invites his interlocutors to "hear what I have to say and then raise objections if you like." (478) For the most part, Socrates' speeches are based solely upon further explaining his points, rather than all at once forming and concluding his opinions. In the case of Polus and Callicles, it is evident that their training as sophists is used throughout their dialogue. Both often find themselves being led in a discussion by Socrates, only to have to fight their way out by use of rhetoric speeches. Despite their efforts, however, Socrates is neither impressed nor deceived. Before his dialogue with Polus, Socrates asks that he "keep in check the tendency to make long speeches which [he] showed at the beginning of our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Frederick Douglass Speech Essay Justified Words Interlacing flawed feelings within a speech can be very stupefying to an audience. The majority of the time either the orator is being narcissistic, fumbling over their own words, or their choice of words see, spurious and somewhat timid, not actually presenting the point. Two honorable mentions that actually have a notable speech are Frederick Douglass and Chief Seattle in the mid–1800s. Feelings can always be flowed, but these two men presented amazing speeches that overall lacked any falsehood within them. Both men saw the reality of the world during the time period they lived in. Not only were they aware of it, many people were afraid to speak out against the wrongness of the world then, but they were not afraid. Both ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The speeches given by both men sever an absolute purpose. Whether or not the point does not seem justifiable to a reader, the more one is to understand the speech, the more it would in fact be justifiable. From reading both of them, it can be determined that each man had hope, regardless of what was going on in the world. Douglass mentioned cleanly where his hope was formed, and why he still had that hope. 'the arm of the Lord is not shortened," were Douglass's exact words. Words that may somehow be an illusion unrecognizable to the uneducated but a deeper meaning lies within Douglass's words. A meaning that represents his purpose for his people. Seattle's words reside with the same effect. "Our God is the same God. You may think that you own him as you wish to own our land, but you cannot. He is the Body of man, and his compassion is equal for the Redman and the white." Seattle's faith is no short coming of his speech. The emotion given by both men was rightfully crestfallen. And in the most of the speeches neither men ever spoke with gratitude about themselves, or came across as thinking they had done something more than others had. They simply spoke of what was, and encouraged change. One comparison of both men's speeches is that both men spoke in a direct jarring diction appeal to the audience. By using diction, whatever they were saying, however they were wanting it to come across was very prominent, but in a fashioned manner. Which is one reason why ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Just the thought of having to speak in front of a class as a requirement made me nervous. But that wasn't the only challenge I was facing mentally. Since I never had any public speaking experience before, things such as body language, tone, eye contact, etc. were easily forgotten since my last speech class over five years ago. All of that was easily spotted in the process of making my self–introduction video when I kept deciding to do retakes repeatedly. In the end, I managed to produce a product that would keep me from failing but it was nothing that I could be proud of. When it came time for the second speech to be due I was relieved almost that it would be another prerecorded session. I thought about how I could have sort of cheat the fundamentals of public speaking by just doing retakes any time I messed up. But my luck ran out when it was changed to an in–class project where we would use our peers as an interview partner. I was glad that we have been doing a few impromptu speeches up to this point. Without any sort of warm up beforehand it would have been a far worse speech than it already was. After interviewing my partner, I thought I had compiled enough information but I failed to transition it to a well–organized speech. I would always make up an excuse in order to escape presenting my piece. Time passed and I kept avoiding my piece, but the competition was a week away and the Parent's Oratory Night, an activity where we present our pieces to our parents and the student body, was one day away. I still remember how much I cried the night before Parent's Night; my fear was getting the worst out of me. He also uses these characters to illustrate that Socratic discussion––not oratory––is the only legitimate philosophical path of finding the truth way to discovering the truth. Plato does this by orchestrating the debate between Polus and Socrates and later showing that Socrates developed the idea of happiness in his last refutation. In the beginning of the book, Plato orchestrates banter between Chaerephon and Polus to illustrate his opinions on oratory and show that careful speechmaking often avoids the question instead of directly searching for the truth. In the banter Chaerephon asks Polus' opinion on the title ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Plato utilized Polus to show that orators are never subject to any deeper thought because they are not questioned by others with different schools of thought. He, however, uses Socrates to exemplify that a true philosopher utilizes discussion to deepen his own thoughts. Polus had a view on happiness as a feeling in the moment, which is only analyzing happiness surface level. This led him to believe that tyrants such as the Great King are happy despite the injustices they commit (471 a– 471 d). However, Socrates views true happiness as a state of being in which one receives a favorable judgement in the afterlife (525 a– 525d). Their discussion shows that the comparisons of both their beliefs and a development of the idea of happiness could not have been brought to light without Socratic discussion. Plato shows that all parties benefit from Socratic discussion in developing philosophical thought because Socrates did not mention punishment in any of his previous refutations until Polus brought the idea to light. This ultimately shows that Socratic discussion is the only way to discover the truth because it instigates a conversation between different schools of thought. • 69. Ancient Oratory Essay John Quincy Adams believed the art of oratory was the highest form of power a citizen could possess in a republic. At the end of his inaugural lecture, Adams lectured to his students the importance of studying ancient rhetoric and the lessons that could be learned from it. Adams believed the study of ancient rhetoric would prepare students to consecrate their abilities to the cause of truth, freedom, and humanity. In this paper, I will defend Adam's position by presenting parallels between his ideology and that of two selected works of ancient oratory. I will evaluate an Ancient Athenian work by Thucydides titled: the Mytilenian debate, and an ancient Roman work by Livy titled: History of Rome. I will show how these two works reinforce Adam's belief that ancient oratory could assist his students in becoming better civic leaders and how contemporary American students can do the same. The democratic republic of the United States could be argued as one of the greatest forms of government the world has ever seen. A form of government which relies on the hopes that its' political processes represent a form of truth to create transparency, a concept of freedom that allows all citizens the right of participation, and a sense of humanity that reinforces the greatness of a nation. In public speaking we learn how to create our own speeches. Since ancient times a predominant way students learn about speech making is through analysis, interpretation and evaluation of how others have created their speeches. Today I will analysis exemplary speech by Steve Jobs through five canons of rhetoric and modes of Persuasion. Steve Jobs starts his speech by saying "I am honored to be with you today at your commencement form one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories." Steve jobs clearly start his speech using first canons of rhetoric: invention. Invention is the most difficult phase in creating a speech since you have to lay the groundwork for all the other phases in your speech. In invention phase you have to consider your audience, means of persuasion, and evidence. Steve Jobs uses "I" in his first paragraph to show that this speech is going to be about his personal experience. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech and King George VI's wartime speech are equally well–written and spoken, while both having distinctive presentations, type of speech, and effect on society. The first comparison between "I Have a Dream" speech and the King's wartime speech is that they served for different situations and how Marin Luther King's delivery was more powerful. The purpose of MLK's speech was to call for the end racism in America to push for Civil Rights. In doing so, MLK's presentation took place at the Lincoln Monument Memorial and was presented in front of approximately 250,000 Civil Rights supporters. "I Have a Dream" speech touched the audience's heart and moved them emotionally. On the other hand, King George VI needed to announce Britain's entry into World War Two, thus he had to introduce an official declaration of war. When the King presented his speech, he did not have a physical audience. Instead, he had the entire British Empire to broadcast his speech over the radio. King George VI recited his speech in a peaceful environment, in a quiet room with only his speech therapist around. The first speech regarding warfare and his stammering issue placed the King under tremendous amounts of pressure to recite well. The oration was well–delivered and clear. Although both speeches were under different circumstances, the audience placed the speakers under pressure to present orally well. That being, one can say that MLK presented his speech better while under heavy stress in front of a physical crowd. MLK's speech demonstrated how one can move an audience with words and tone of voice. MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech was exceptionally well–written and orally presented based on important factors, such as the delivery and style of the speech. In comparison with King George VI wartime speech, the two speeches had drastically different tones and voice while presenting. An important consideration, MLK was a confident and well–spoken person who knew how to use his voice volume and confidence to engage the audience's attention. On the contrary, King George VI was not a confident speaker. Furthermore, the use of rhetorical devices is highly evident in MLK's speech as it helped with the success ... Chapter 15 is about speaking to inform an audience. Lucas begins this chapter with the types of informative speeches and some analysis and organization skills for each topic. There are many ways to classify an informative speech, Lucas breaks it down into four main topics: objects, processes, events, and concepts. Lucas begins this chapter by speaking on speeches about objects. Lucas defines an object as "Objects include anything that is visible, tangible, and stable to form. ... Here are examples of subjects for speeches about objects e–book readers, Susan B. Anthony, service dogs, titanium, human eye and Golden Gate Bridge" (Lucas, 2012, pg. 278.). Lucas reminds us that whatever subject a speaker will pick they must know that they will not be able to tell everything on the subject. To instead pick the most important ideas the speaker wants to get across and use those to develop a main point. Next Lucas shows ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on Written Speech Analysis Sunni Brown, the co–author of "Gamestorming: A Playbook for Innovators, Rulebreakers, and Changemakers", makes a sound and coherently proficient case in which she suggests that the definition of 'Doodling' be changed to "make spontaneous marks to help yourself think". Brown's speech at the March 2011 'TED' conference in Long Beach, California before academics and her peers, was entitled "Doodlers, unite!". She suggests in a both informative and persuasive manner that the act of doodling is undervalued, at times ridiculed but more often than not will assist people in learning and retaining knowledge. The speech's structure, content, implemented speech devices and delivery will be analysed as to whether they were successful or unsuccessful. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Brown introduction may be seen in the eyes of many as unsuccessful because of her lack of pull on the audiences interest. It is commonly said that an audience member will make a judgement as to whether they will pay full attention to a speaker in the first five to fifteen seconds of a speech (Steven A. Bebe and Susan J. Bebe, 2011, p. 112). It is slightly distressing to think that some people who are quick to judge may have missed Brown's important message because of her uninteresting opening. She immediately follows with an establishment of her credibility, and as indicated by Pamela Thompson (2005, p. 23), this is a highly recommended element of speech as doing so can have a favorable effect the audience. Brown follows on by defining her problem with the wide belief that doodling is "considered to be anti–intellectual and counter to serious learning" (Sunni Brown, 2011). It is at this juncture in her speech that Brown begins to make her first main point, 'the reality of doodling', by giving statistics and examples of the perceptions of doodling in western society and effectively giving the audience reasons to laugh at how they may have previously perceived the act of doodling by weaving in thoughtful comparisons and well known research. This was greatly effective because it created a feeling of familiarity in the audience which promotes a greater level of audience engagement as reiterated by Patsy McCarthy and Caroline Hatcher (2002 , p. 13). As she takes orders and serves food, repeats, "Hello, my name is Brianna and I will be your waitress today. Can I start you off with a drink?" over and over, she thinks of many things. Perhaps she thinks about cheering at the next football game or the fact that she'll have to clean her room when she gets home. Maybe she wonders if the steak is really as good as everyone says or how she'll celebrate her birthday in a few weeks. She doesn't worry about the middle aged man staring her down from across the floor, she doesn't worry about the way he and his "wife" seem a little too interested in the life of a 17 year old girl. She gets a little suspicious when the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What does this mean? It means that anyone in this room can fall into the vicious pulpit of Modern Day Slavery. As you can imagine there are hundreds of thousands of stories like Brianna's: the 31 year old African housekeeper who was held prisoner for 22 months, sleeping on a bathroom floor and eating rarely, the Moldovan mother who left her six year old for a business venture that did not turn out well. The Indonesian man that wanted nothing more than to come to the U.S. to be a registered nurse, but was deceived into a slavery. The 16 year old Chinese boy that needed to make money to provide for his mother and two younger brothers. The 15 year old Mexican girl who was sold into slavery by her boss for $200. After five years of imprisonment her "boss" was murdered and she was finally liberated, only to be thrown in jail for over 20 years for that murder. Why do these stories exist? What compels a person to enslave another? The answer to these questions is simple a lot simpler than one might think. Most people in the community are unaware of human trafficking, there aren't many laws that specifically address human trafficking, help isn't typically offered to victims of human trafficking. All of these factors make it that much easier for the traffickers to get away with their crimes. To put it in perspective, one trafficker is convicted for every 405 slaves. • 129. Summary Of Angelina Grimke's Speech Of the four oratory performances that we watched, most effective was Sydney H.'s as Angelina Grimke because of her use of tone, hand motions, and usage of the audience. Firstly, the speech begins with a rhetorical question. When delivering the line, Sydney's voice used a questioning tone correctly. As the question repeated, she used the same tone but with more emphasis. Also, towards the end of the speech, Sydney raised her voice at the correct time and transmitted empowerment to her audience. The line was crucial to the speech, and Sydney correctly emphasized it. Within the oratories, all of the speakers used tone well, but it stuck out to me more in Sydney's. Secondly, Sydney's hand–motions made her oratory very effective. For example, when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Public Speech On Public Speaking Public Speaking Goals I chose to take this course because I have enjoyed previous units I have had about public speaking in high school English classes and it is a requirement for my major. As a pre– pharmacy major, public speaking does not seem like a necessary class, but the more I think about how often public speaking is used, the more I understand the reasoning for public speaking as a required course. Public speaking is a major foundation for everyday communication. Growing up, I can recall several common instances where I was exposed to public speaking. A guest speaker coming to talk to our class, the priest giving a homily at mass, large assemblies with inspirational speakers, and our graduation speech are a few examples that come to mind. Although it seems like only famous people or teachers ever have to speak in public, in reality, almost everyone will have to give a speech in front of a large group at some point in their lives. This is why public speaking is a required course for most students. Public speaking is important when proposing an idea with a large group of people, explaining a plan of action for a specific task, sharing a new medical discovery with a group of physicians, or giving a talk on leadership to a group of business professionals. All of these cases are applicable to almost any career, which is why it is important for all students to understand the basics of public speaking and how to effectively communicate with a large audience. • 137. A Reflection Of Speech Now that day two speakers have finished their speeches, I have considered the feedback given about my speech and compared it to other speakers in the class. I reviewed in my head what I did wrong and went back in my mind to remember those speakers who I believed did better than me in the categories I scored low in. We learn from each other's strengths as well as our mistakes. Accordingly, chapter ten focuses on the beginning and ending a speech. An effective introduction gets the speaker off on the right foot. The "right foot" means that the speaker has accomplished the goal of a great hook to attract the audience's attention. A speaker's introduction is a way to make the audience feel intrigued and want to continue listening so that he or she will feel as though what is about to be said is to benefit them. An effective conclusion ends the speech on a strong note. The "strong note" is the speaker going back to review what was previously said so that the audience can remember that information and use it somehow in a way that the speaker intended it to be used. During my speech, I felt that greeting my peers and informing them on what I will be speaking about, which was introducing my partner, would be a great start for my audience to be awake and to feel included on what they will be putting their attention on. Out of the eight methods in the first objective, I used the last one which was gaining their attention by referring to the occasion. I introduced the fact that my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

On the other hand, leadership is defined as: "condition of leader", and this in turn responds to the description of "person to which a group follows". • 150. Rhetorical Analysis Of Patrick Henry And The Massachusetts... Oration is one of the most ancient art forms in the world and can be used to instigate wars, ally countries, and fight for one's personal beliefs. "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" by Patrick Henry and "To the Massachusetts Convention" by Jonathan Smith are two of the strongest orations of the 18th century. While they are in many ways similar, they are also vastly different. Although they both begin with the exact same address of, "Mr. President," they have many more differences, including contexts, purposes, and rhetorical strategies. They are also given by two men who share virtually nothing in common. Patrick Henry and Jonathan Smith both use rhetorical strategy to address the president of their time, George Washington; however, the two speeches that develop from those initial phrases convey completely different ideals and spur dissimilar outcomes. As one explores the meaning of these two speeches which were both delivered during the time of the American Revolution, many interpretations and conclusions can be drawn, but the commonly accepted understandings of both speeches show connections and separations. As previously stated, both of the speeches begin with the introductory phrase, "Mr. President." Patrick Henry and Jonathan Smith were addressing George Washington ("History.org: The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation 's Official History and Citizenship Website"), but he was not officially the president until 1778, when Jonathan Smith gave his speech.
