Comparing Film And Luhrmann's Film
In Zeffirelli's film and Luhrmann's film, there are many similar elements as well as many different
elements. Both the settings are based out side, make up is similar, cinematography has the same
characters, and the acting is serious as well as dramatic in both films. Some things that were
different are the costumes, props, and sounds. In Zeffirelli's film, the setting is outside in a village
shopping type area with a fountain. Mercutio and Benvoleo see the Capulets coming there way. I
think the reason why Zeffirelli decided to have them fight outside on the village area was because
there are many people who can watch the fight see who killed who. In Luhrmann's film, the setting
is at a beach, still filled with many people. Mercutio is sitting by the other Montagues when Tybalt
and the other Capulets come there way. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many layers to their clothes as the main color on top is the house colors blue and orange.
For their pants, they are leggings. In Luhrmann's, the Montagues are wearing their tropical shirts
with no under layers, and the Capulets are wearing all black, a bit more formal than the Montagues.
The style costumes still represent who the two houses still are. Because of the different time
settings, the outfits are anywhere near the same style. In both of the films, the actors had lots of dirt
on their face from rolling around and fighting on the floor. In Zeffirelli's film there is less blood on
Romeo's face and Tybalt's face, but in Luhrmann's film there is a lot more dirt and blood on Romeos
face and shirt as well as Tybalts face and clothes. I think the reason why Luhrmann's film had a bit
more blood, dirt, and more tears was to show how much Mercutio mean't to Romeo as a friend. In
Zeffirelli's film there is less tears, blood, and tears but Romeo still shows how upset he is with
Tybalt by his dramatic sword fighting and

Comparing Zeffirelli's Romeo And Juliet
Oftentimes, a writer or director wants to change a book into a movie or TV show. When doing this,
he/she has the option of sticking to the original story line or changing significant details. Franco
Zeffirelli chose the latter when making his film Romeo and Juliet. He strengthened the plot that
came from William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet such as the love between
Romeo and Juliet and the hatred of their families, but, ultimately, when remaking Shakespeare's
play, Zeffirelli left the audience confused about why Romeo is our tragic hero and what happened
between the families after the two lovers die.
Zeffirelli improves upon some scenes from the play by adding more detail and giving the audience a
good visualization. Throughout the play, Shakespeare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shakespeare delivers this scene in a way that does not truly explain what Mercutio was doing to the
Nurse. In contrast, the film enhances this scene by truly showing the audience just how much of an
important character the Nurse is. He does this by incorporating her into the scenes after serious
moments, such as after Romeo asks Friar Lawrence to marry him and Juliet he has Mercutio mock
the Nurse. Comedic scenes, like the one's played by the Nurse, are important to keep the audience's
attention. Furthermore, in the play, Shakespeare describes the party scene where Romeo and Juliet
fall in love with each others physical appearances (1.5.43–52) to be much less passionate and

Essay on William Shakespeare's Hamlet movie
I am not a big fan of the 1990 movie version of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, starring Mel Gibson.
I feel that while it stands alone as a very well made movie and contains great acting performances
throughout, I think that it strays too far from the original text and layout of the play. The omissions
and transposing makes the play weaker, and while it is a great screenplay, it fails in comparison to
Shakespeare's original work. The three things which bother me the most are the omission of
Fortinbras and the handling of the, "To be or not to be..." soliloquy and the "Get thee to a nunnery..."
scene, and Hamlet's Oedipus complex. Omitting the subplot of Fortinbras took away the whole
political aspect of the piece. It also weakened the ending. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

I felt they through away the Hamlet/Ophelia scene and turned something beautiful into something
boring. The only thing that makes it work is the great acting performances of Mel Gibson and
Helena–Bonham Carter. Carter is superb as Ophelia, much better than Kate Winslet, who was great
in the Branagh version.
I was pleasantly shocked at the performance, especially the scene where goes insane after finding
out her father is dead. That is something else that greatly bothers me. I don't like the way Gibson
was directed to play the scene in which he kills Polonius. He doesn't even play it like he cares that
he did it. That also makes Hamlet seem like a man who does not have a mind. I read somewhere
once that Gibson felt the same thing about the scene.
Ian Holm gives a very fine performance as Polonius. Alan Bates also shines as Claudius. He gives
such a fine performance in the role. I am not a big fan of Glenn Close, but she was wonderful as
Queen Gertrude. I just don't agree with Oedipus story line. I don't feel that the original text calls for
it to be so played out.
Shakespeare hints at incestual activities in a lot of his plays, including between Tybalt and his aunt
in Romeo & Juliet. But I don't feel it should be taken so literally. It made Hamlet seem as
though he really was completely insane. That, to me, keeps the whole play from working. But again,
as a movie, it works. Mel Gibson gives a very fine performance as the tragic hero.
The only times which he

Zeffirelli Versus Luhrmann's Film
Zeffirelli's film depiction of the balcony scene is superior to Luhrmann's film because it is truer to
Shakespeare's play and has a better interpretation of the play to film. The films are similar in that it's
night and Juliet looks out her balcony as Romeo leaves her house. Although the Luhrmann film
depiction during the balcony scene was in a lavish house which would have never been seen during
the time frame of when the play was written. There may have been lavish houses during the time the
play was written, but they don't come close to the setting in the Zeffirelli film. This plays a key role
in the film seeing that the accuracy of the events of the scene help to give the viewers an enhanced
feel to the original atmosphere. Another significant

"For never was a story of more woe

– William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, 5.3
'Romeo and Juliet' is a tragic play about two star crossed lovers written by Shakespeare in 1595. The
play is a timeless teenage tradgedy. "The play champions the 16th Century belief that true love
always strikes at first sight," (Lamb 1993: Introduction) and even in modern times an audience still
want to believe in such a thing as love at first sight. Act II Scene II the balcony scene displays that
romantic notion perfectly.

Luhrman has based his version at Verona Beach; America and instead of basing it in the 16th
century like Zeffirelli, he had his film based in the 20th century, with mansions, shiny cars and
bright lights. While Zeffirelli paced his film in an Iambic pentameter – a traditional Shakespeare
pace; Luhrman never kept his film at a solid pace. "By modernizing these aspects of the play, and
reconstructing the prologue, Luhrmann creates a movie that is more interesting to the modern
viewers." ("Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet." 123HelpMe.com). As
Zeffirelli may have believed famous actors would steal his show he instead hired fresh new faces to
give the movie a more fresh, innocence value, But Luhrman used well known actors to play the lead
roles. This worked because more people were attracted to the film by the actors.
Zeffirelli used symbols to help capture his audience. Some were subtle, others were meant to get the
audiences attention. For example Romeo climbing over the high wall to reach Juliet's balcony was a
subtle symbol showing the heights and challenges he would face for true love, and even the fact the
scene was set on a balcony overlooking an orchid which was may have been meant to symbolise the
'natural love' or 'green' being fresh and inexperienced. Some more prominent symbols were used,
such as Juliet's particular costume in this scene, a symbol

The Adaption of William Shakespeare´s Romeo and Juliet
The Adaptation of Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet, written by Shakespeare, is a world–known
tragedy. Torn between two enemy households, Romeo and Juliet try to keep their love alive. The
passionate story of their love has been adapted into several movies. While each movie has its own
charm, Baz Luhrmann's modern adaptation has its noteworthy features that dissociate it from Franco
Zeffirelli's adaptation. By staying true to the story, the characters, and the creativity he uses,
Luhrmann takes the movie to a next stage. The tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet is known
around the world. To make it as virtuous as Shakespeare has written, the scenes should be prepared
thoughtfully, and the consistency should be preserved. Peter Travers, an American critic, writes in
Rolling Stone, "Luhrmann cuts the text as well, though not as damagingly (as Zeffirelli). His point
is not to distract you from the words, as Zeffirelli did, but to lead you to them." (Travers) Travers
emphasizes on the accomplishment that Luhrmann has achieved by cutting the write scenes. Unlike
Zeffirelli did in the scenes of first–sight love and the fight scene between Romeo and Tybalt,
Luhrmann takes the play, and evaluates it effectively. He accomplishes the play by abridging the
play tactically. Luhrmann takes separate paths with Zeffirelli, and uses the scenes smoothly, and
keeps his audience interested. While Luhrmann succeeds to preserve the consistency of the play,
Zeffirelli manages to display some

Act 2 Scene 2 Comparison Of Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet Act 2 Scene 2 Comparison There are millions of different well–known plays
around the world, some of these plays have been performed many times over and over again. Even
though these plays are repeatedly performed, every time there is a difference, every time something
has changed. Directors have this power and ability, to be able to change how a character looks, or
the point of view, or even just the facial expressions of the character. All of these little differences
affect the play and make it look brand new every single time. This will be shown through the
comparison of two different Romeo and Juliet production of Act 2 Scene 2, the balcony scene. One
of the productions is by Franco Zeffirelli and the other by Baz Luhrmann. In my opinion, the

Setting is an element which can be looked over by the viewer. Sometimes what makes a scene work
can be fully tied to its setting and props. With a setting that is realistic and well thought, you can
truly tie a scene together. In the Franco Zeffirelli version of the play, we can see that the setting is
around the Capulet mansion, by Juliet's balcony. Romeo is below hiding in the bushes. The leaves of
the bushes and how Romeo is below them show us how he is hiding and can't be seen by anyone,
the night sky and how dark it is in this scene also hide Romeo. Juliet is sitting on the ledge of her
balcony. In this production, the balcony is made very wide, so in the scene, Juliet can walk along the
entire balcony before Romeo speaks. This also gives her enough space to run away when she is
scared by Romeo's voice. The plot is not affected too much by these choices other than being able to
have Juliet almost run away from Romeo. Through these setting options that Franco Zeffirelli took
during his production, we have a medieval time period look and a more original looking production.

William Shakespeare 's Hamlet And Franco Zeffireli 's Film...
William Shakespeare's Hamlet and Franco Zeffireli's film version of the story are different in many
ways, but the basic characters and basic plot remain the same. Franco Zeffirelli's screenplay is an
edited, re–vamped version of the original tragedy in which lines are cut and scenes are modified.
Additionally, Zeffirelli modifies Shakespeare's ghost scenes and uses narrative and film techniques
to both create an overall suspenseful atmosphere and generate empathetic feelings towards Hamlet.
The various changes made by Zeffirelli are interesting, and attempting to analyze the decisions
made by the film director allowed for not only a deeper understanding of the film, but of the story
Hamlet in general. In Act One of the play ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In act one, scene one, line 28, the guards state that they have seen something frightening: "What, has
this thing appeared again tonight?" (1.1.28). It is here that the audience is able to witness the ghosts,
particularly when one guard says, "Look where it comes again" (1.1.49). The ghosts now appear on
stage. Horatio, a man of logic and reason, is also scared and admits that, "It harrows me with fear
and wonder," thereby allowing the audience to learn that the former king, father of Hamlet, is dead.
There is a ghost clothed in his armor strolling the castle's battlements all through the night. The
barricades in the ghost scene of the film are foggy, filled with moonlight, and dark. The setting gives
the scene an even eerier feel, giving the viewer the idea that what is about to take place could be
frightening, suspenseful, or spooky in some way. The icy clouds of breath hovering throughout the
shot chill the viewer. The sky is empty, creating an isolated feeling. It is obvious that this scene
takes place at night, when the ghosts are able to freely roam; however, the background lighting
indicates that day is approaching, and that the ghost will soon have to return to wherever it stays
during the day.
In the film, the ghosts do not appear as soon as they do in the play. Instead, Zeffirelli rearranges the
order of some of the scenes. Occasionally, he even adds scenes that were not present in
Shakespeare's play. The first scene of the film is the king's funeral – a

Differences Of Romeo And Juliet In Zeffirelli Film
In Act 2, the balcony scenes from both films show the quick and youthful love of Romeo and Juliet,
but the films display a difference between the two relationships. In the Zeffirelli film, when Romeo
and Juliet are kissing, it is sloppy and messy. The kisses they share look rushed. Romeo is kissing
Juliet all over the place, not letting her talk. While Juliet is trying to finish her sentences, she gets
smothered with kisses from Romeo. This conveys to the viewer that the lovers are in a youthful
relationship with a lot of commitment but with little experience from both of them. They are not
mature enough to carry on with this starry–eyed relationship if they are not on the same page. These
two lovers seem a little naive and in a "fools in love"

Romeo And Juliet And Franco Zeffirelli's
Timeless yet calamitous, Romeo and Juliet is the classic story of two star–crossed lovers. Written by
William Shakespeare in 1597, it has been read by many over the course of hundreds of years.
Having been adapted into plays and films several times over, the archetype of two star–crossed
lovers is prevalent in many pieces of literature and movies. Starring Olivia Hussey as Juliet and
Leonard Whiting as Romeo, the movie released in 1968 was directed by Franco Zeffirelli; Baz
Luhrmann directed his own interpretation less than thirty years later, which starred Leonardo
DiCaprio as Romeo and Claire Danes as Juliet. Both versions of the play had very diverse
screenplays, but both movies were able to keep the original storyline of Shakespeare's original play.

Found in these two characters, innocence is essential to the storyline because this element is a major
factor that influenced the character's actions. Both Romeo and Juliet are relatively young; especially
Juliet because she is said to be thirteen. Also, it is important for the actors in the movies to be able to
portray this youthful quality. Despite maturity being a desirable trait for many people, it is necessary
for Juliet to be depicted as young and naïve. Franco Zeffirelli is capable of achieving this by casting
Olivia Hussey. Acting well, Olivia was capable of playing the role of Juliet, as it would have been in
the play. On the other hand, Claire Danes playing Juliet, as seen in Luhrmann's adaptation, was
good; but could have been performed better. Her character seemed to mature to portray the naïveté
that Juliet possesses. By casting Hussey as Juliet, Zeffirelli was able to come closer to the true
nature of the play because Juliet's innocence was captured in her character more

Hamlet Movie Adaptation
Hamlet was written in 1609 by William Shakespeare; Shakespeare is one of the greatest poets and
playwrights. Since the original performance of Hamlet, there have been many movie adaptations.
Some of the many well–known film directors for these movies are Kenneth Branagh, Franco
Zeffirelli and Sir Laurence Olivier. From the above film directors, I will compare and contrast
Zeffirelli's production of Hamlet to the original Shakespeare's play Hamlet.
Zeffirelli's version of Hamlet is one of the sound versions of Hamlet. It was produced and starred
Mel Gibson in the late 1900s. Comparing the film version of Hamlet to the play, Zeffirelli has made
noticeable changes in the movie including some clothing choices and characters' reactions. He also
altered and cut lines from the original Shakespeare play.
Shakespeare centralized the theme of revenge in the ghost scene in Act 1 Scene 5 with the use of
literary devices. In the movie adaptation, Zeffirelli used a different approach to portray the theme,
without the use of any literary devices. He instead used costume choices, characters' reactions and
different word choices.
Zeffirelli used a creative way to portray Hamlet's father wearing a white shirt with black pants
instead of Shakespeare's choice of armour. He used this to show how Hamlet's father would look in
90's society. He made Hamlet wear black clothing throughout the movie to show that Hamlet was
the only one who cared and grieved throughout his mother's marriage and until his own death.
Zeffirelli changed the characters' reactions throughout the scenes. One of the character changes is
during Hamlet's father's ghost soliloquy. Instead of his father being projected as angry towards his
wife and his brother in the movie, he uses a calm tone. In the movie while Hamlet was listening to
his father, he should have looked angry and upset. Instead he had no emotions while listening to his
father. In the movie, he should have an angry tone and should be eager to plot revenge on who killed
his father, instead he did not talk throughout his father's death story. Zeffirelli chose this so that the
audience will wait and anticipate when Hamlet's anger will grow and his reaction during the scene.

Comparing Zeffirelli's Romeo And Juliet
Franco Zeffirelli's film contains an accurate portrayal of the balcony scene in Romeo & Juliet as a
result of the language portrayed in the movie, the clothing worn, and the setting conveyed in the
scene. Instead of adapting Shakespeare's language, Zeffirelli decided to keep most of the wording
similar to the book, which made the movie seem authentic. The clothing worn in the scene is an
correct representation of Shakespeare's play as it mirrors clothes worn in Renaissance England
rather than parodying it with urbanized clothing. The setting conveyed in the scene is similar to the
setting described in the play, mainly due to it being set in the same time period as the play. However,
Baz Luhrmann's depiction of this scene in his movie contained more accurate actors and also kept
some of the language true to the original play. The actors in Luhrmann's play are closer to the ages
of Romeo and Juliet than Zeffirelli's actors. Luhrmann kept some of the original language of the
play, however, most of it adapted to be more American. Zeffirelli's film is a precise portrayal of the
balcony scene. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Zeffirelli loosely translated the transcript, which created an legitimate feel to the movie. Zeffirelli
used very similar language to Shakespeare's language in the original play. The actors in the movie
seem to be wearing clothes relevant to the time period that the play is set in, consequently
contributing to make the movie feel authentic. The setting of the play is at the Capulets' house, on
and near Juliet's balcony, and in the movie the setting is also the same place, also the movie and the
play both appear to be set in the same time period. Zeffirelli did a wonderful job of recreating the

The Importance Of Stage Directions In Shakespeare's Romeo...
In the very beginning of Act 1, Scene 1 of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, there is a fight between
the Montagues' and the Capulets' servants about them biting their thumbs at each other; biting their
thumbs at each other was a sign of disrespect. The variations in the intonation, tones, and stage
directions in the four different variations of the scene, show the viewer or the audience how
differently they were created and how each director has different ideas about how it should look and
sound. They had different ideas about how to show the emotions of the characters. The stage
directions in the first scene by George Cukor are pretty general. They show how the characters do
have a rivalry with each other. During the fight, you could tell that each person had different
directions to follow during the fight. During the second scene by Alvin Rakoff, they had more
emotion in their actions, which you could tell was through their stage directions. The director had a
different idea about the part when Sampson asks a question quietly to ... Show more content on

they never once had a tone that suggested that they may be nervous or scared. They showed
confidence and courage with their tones. The scene created by Franco Zeffirelli has very confident
tones radiating from the actors. They each do not show fear. Their voices show us that they both
think they are better than the other. In the last scene by Baz Luhrmann, there are very intense tones

Hamlet Movie Vs Play
In Zeffirelli's portrayal of Hamlet, there are parts added and subtracted from the play in part to make
the movie closer to standard movie length but also to show more of how Hamlet's mind can work
the way it does. There are several other movie adaptations of Hamlet that stay more aligned with the
original play, but movies are supposed to make some interpretations of plays because the actors
need to try and express their characters' feelings. Arguably the most realistic interpretation of the
original Hamlet would be Zeffirelli's adaptation because, although it cuts out the scene with the
ghost, it adds reason to why Hamlet would be suspicious of more characters by adding him silently
to the background of the scene.
In Hamlet Act 1 of the play there is no trace of Hamlet while Polonius is talking to Ophelia yet in
Act 2 Hamlet knows that Polonius is using Ophelia which is why Hamlet berates Polonius so much
(Shakespeare 1.3.95–145 2.2.187–237). How could Hamlet know about what Polonius is doing with
Ophelia if it is not mentioned that Hamlet is present yet discreet while the conversation takes place.
Either Hamlet would have to be within earshot or one of his close friends would have to tell him.

Hamlet more reason to obey its wishes because it appears to everyone around but if the ghost is only
seen by Hamlet then it would be easier for Hamlet to question the very existence of the ghost later
on in the play when he decides to trick the king into giving away the fact that he was indeed guilty

Safe and predictable, there is nothing remotely surprising (and, therefore, interesting) about this
rudimentary remake. The movie is so simple and sappy in its plotting that it seems more suited for
the Hallmark Channel than the big screen. It also doesn't take much to see that it's sampling more of
the work of Nicholas Sparks than Spencer's book. Since there isn't a movie adaptation of a Sparks

opportunity and envisions how Sparks would've handled "Love" if he wrote it.

Zeffirelli Hamlet Comparison
Unlike many other adaptations of William Shakespeare's "Hamlet", Franco Zeffirelli's version is
unique in the manner in which the character of Hamlet is portrayed. Unlike the tone that
Shakespeare sets for the protagonist in his original play (and therefore the tone that many major
directors base their adaptations on) Zeffirelli paints Hamlet in an extremely upbeat light. He strays
away from the norm of depicting the character a lost soul–doomed, in a sense, from the very start,
and instead chooses to give audiences a healthy and happy Hamlet, who has "nothing fundamentally
awry until everything in his life goes wrong in one swift motion", as film critic Robert Ebert writes.

The pair understood that the primal issue with Shakespearean language is that it is often difficult to
convey to modern audiences; regardless of the fact that Shakespeare's plays convey timeless themes
and are full of clever and entertaining banter by witty and relatable characters, average people with
no prior knowledge of Shakespearean dialect often have troubling following along. Zeffirelli knew
that once audiences had a better idea of what was going on, they would be able appreciate the film
in the way that many robust Shakespeare fans do. Zeffirelli is known for bridging the gap between
original works and ones of modernity, and therefore had no qualms shifting some dialogue and
adding in a scene that does not exist in the original play. In this scene, he gave clarification to
audiences, as they watch Hamlet, Gertrude and Claudius confront each other during the wake of
Hamlet's father. It is during this fabricated scene that we also see the sexual attraction between
Hamlet's mother and his Uncle, which works to clarify the preceding angst and tension Hamlet

Zeffirelli Comparison Of Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet is one of William Shakespeare's most famous tragedies. It tells the story of "a pair
of star–cross'd lovers" (1.prologue.6) in the Italian city of Verona. Throughout the play, Shakespeare
intertwines various themes, emotions and characters traits. Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 film adaptation
strongly mirrors many of these attributes. One of these key themes is predetermined destiny.
Shakespeare explores this theme through his use of foreshadowing and coincidence. Zeffirelli omits
and includes certain parts of the original story to emphasise the theme of fate. The theme of fate is
very strong throughout the play, but some aspects of their destiny have to be accredited to the
character's actions and choices. Shakespeare explores ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was their choices that contribute to their destiny more than fate did. For example, it was entirely
Romeo's choice to kill himself when he hears of Juliet's death. Fate did not have an input into his
decision, he decided his own fate. The message of Juliet's fake death not reaching Romeo aids his

part in Romeo's choice. He decides his own fate, which is o be banished to Mantua. He then calls
himself "fortune's fool" (3.1.134), in which he blames fate instead of himself for his misfortunes.
Other choices that contributed to Rome and Juliet's 'predetermined' destiny include Romeo's
decision to attend Capulet's party, and Friar Laurence's choice to marry the couple. Predetermined

Romeo And Juliet: The 1968 Franco Zeffirelli Version
William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet has been made into many art forms. One popular form
is film. However, the films are all very different. The 1968 Franco Zeffirelli version of Romeo and
Juliet varies from 1997 Baz Luhrmann version called William Shakespeare´s Romeo and Juliet. The
balcony scene in each movie highlights the differences. These scenes differ in setting, costume, and
music. The first way they're different is with the setting. In the Zeffirelli version, the balcony is
wrapped all around the house, in the 1997 version, the balcony is only a small section and Juliet
doesn't even go on it. The Luhrmann version has a pool in their backyard and surrounding it is
pavement. In the 1968 version, it´s like a jungle, there are trees and grass all over. For the lighting in
the Luhrmann version theyŕe using fairy lights but in the Zeffirelli version they use fire for the
lighting. During this scene, the Zeffirelli version is more authentic because itś very Shakespearean
times because they use fire for the light and Romeo actually gets on the balcony with Juliet. ... Show

In the Zeffirelli version, Juliet is wearing a very flowy white dress which is form–fitting on the bust

costume which is a pure white dress with a flowy skirt. Romeo is wearing a silver knight costume
with a mask so no one will know he is a Montague. The Zeffirelli version is more authentic to the
time because during the shakespearean time they wouldn't have angel costumes or knight costumes

Hamlet: Zeffirelli vs. Branagh Essay
To play one of Shakespeare's most complex roles successfully on stage or on screen has been the
aspiration of many actors. William Shakespeare's Hamlet has been the focus on various accounts
throughout the 20th Century, each actor attempting to bring something unique and unmarked to the
focal character. Franco Zeffirelli and Kenneth Branagh, both film directors, introduce varying levels
of success on the screen through downright differences in ways of translation and original ideas.
Zeffirelli's much shorter interpretation of the film is able to convey the importance of Hamlet as a
masterwork by using modern approaches to film but still capturing the traditional work behind
Shakespeare's well–known play.

The entire scenery throughout this movie is very appropriate and what one would expect to see
during Shakespearean time. Similarly, the costumes are also in sync with the scenery, at times
appear very heavy and dull looking; everything about the presence of this movie emerges to be
traditional at first glance.
Kenneth Branagh's interpretation of Hamlet emphasized different importance's of the play. His
version differs from that of Zeffirelli's because; he makes use of the entire text from Shakespeare's
original work. Branagh also does not hold the time period authentic. Although his version of the
play was not altered as much as Zeffirelli's, he is still able to hold the attention of modern critics and
viewers. However, by transfiguring the play into a Victorian background, Branagh's film completely
alters the mindset and feel of a true Shakespearean play.
The opening scene (1.1.1) of Branagh's movie is when Hamlet gives his monologue, the lighting at
this point is very bright and the camera is slanted vertically. Hamlet is acted out as a very angered
character; he leans his weight into a chair, trying to hold back, but eventually collapses dramatically.
The camera is approached from the back of him, and his dark clothing makes him pop out to the rest
of the brightly colored audience. As this scene

Comparing Zeffierllli's Narrative And Film
In the Zeffierlli version, the director uses narrative and film techniques to create a suspenseful
atmosphere and generate feelings of empathy for Hamlet. He makes significant changes in narrative
techniques, specifically for the first act of the play, by reflowing the play's plot, adding to the
settings of each scene and by cutting some dialogue. These changes reinterpret some elements of the
play and intensify Hamlet's dilemma for the viewer. First, Zeffierelli changes the plot and rearranges
the action of Hamlet to get straight to the main action and characters. Act one, scene one of the play
establishes the conflict: Denmark is preparing for a war. It also establishes the believability of a
ghost. The guards first say they have seen something

Essay Comparing Zeffirelli's Romeo And Juliet
Zeffirelli and Luhrmann both have productions of the Shakespeare tragedy Romeo and Juliet.
Franco Zeffirelli's "Romeo and Juliet" was released in 1968. Zeffirelli was a Italian director, he was
a director and a producer for operas, flims, and television. Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo and Juliet" was
released in 1996. Luhrmann was a Australian director, he was also a writer and producer for flim,
television, opera, theatre, music, and recording industries. Baz was also the director of "The Great
Gatsby" in 2013. From all other scenes in the book Romeo and Juliet Act I Scene V stood out from

low vibe to it. Zeffirelli doesn't really adapt Shakespeare's language but he does reduce some lines

sometimes it was way different than the book. The directors both gave a strong visual impact on
there version of the book. In Zeffirelli's interpretation he shows very neutral colors. He uses icons

Interpretation of the Balcony Scene by Baz Luhrmann and Franco Zeffirelli of William
Shakespreare's Romeo and Juliet "Romeo and Juliet" is a famous love story written by William
Shakespeare. Two interpretations were made of this text into a film by the two directors, Baz
Luhrmann (1996) and Franco Zeffirelli (1968). The films use different types of media to portray the
characters and the overall context of Shakespeare's play. I will be focusing on Act two Scene ii (the
balcony scene) where I will compare how the two directors use media in the films. In Baz

It triggers off when Romeo bumps into the statues and smashes them on the floor which makes the
dogs bark and there is an addition of rustling leaves, these are some of the sound effects that have
been used, which builds up tension and causes more of a scene. In action to this, Romeo climbs up
the wall that leads to Juliet's balcony in order to get to her. The camera shot used is a close up of
Romeo to show his emotional distress that he is feeling. The statues in this scene represent Juliet as
a goddess and that she is very important, this is a key fact to remember in Romeo's eyes. This
version is different to the text as Juliet does not say her famous lines from the balcony, but comes
down from her room to the pool outside, where she recites her lines with passion thinking of her
dear Romeo. In Zeffirelli's account of the film, Romeo is shown down below in the bushes whereas
Juliet is the higher and more powerful person out of the two of them, and she is shown as the higher
person sitting on the balcony. Once again this has been showing the higher and lower and lower
angle shots. It also shows a point of view camera shot throughout this scene, meaning that the film
would be played throughout the character's eyes, as if Romeo or Juliet were filming it themselves.

William Shakespeare 's Romeo And Juliet
When one thinks of the word "love," the idea of romance often comes to mind.
Therefore, platonic love (non–romantic love) is often forgotten, though it is equally as strong as
its romantic counterpart, and can lead to consequences much more tragic. Such is the case with
William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Despite the dominating romance between the two
young lovers, as the play progresses, one would realize that the platonic love of those around
Romeo and Juliet, though no one can be at fault, is what actually leads the lovers to their ends. In
Franco Zeffirelli's movie rendition of the play, this underlying love is revealed as well and is
shown evidently. Therefore, Zeffirelli manages to portray this love clearly, allowing the ... Show

This love, however, contributes to
the death of Romeo and Juliet because if Capulet had not delayed the wedding, Juliet would
already be a wife, and would not be able to have a romantic relationship with Romeo. If Juliet
did not have a relationship with Romeo, then neither of them would eventually commit suicide
for each other.
1
Despite Capulet's mistake of trying to protect his daughter, the lovers may still have been
spared from death if not for the love from Friar Lawrence. Friar Lawrence's mistake is his giving
permission for Romeo to marry Juliet. Even after saying that "Young men's love then lies/ Not
truly in their hearts, but in their eyes" (II, iii, 71–72), he gives permission for the marriage due to
his love, which is shown by his actions (of allowing the marriage), for them and their families, as
he wishes the marriage will end the hatred between the two households. This is demonstrated in
his dialogue when he says: "In one respect I'll thy assistant be...To turn your households' rancor
to pure love" (II, iii, 97–99). If Friar Lawrence had not given them permission to marry, then the
lovers would either have no good reason to continue loving each other and move on (as young
love often fades quickly due to it being based on attractiveness rather than true love), or they
would not be obliged to conform to the roles of a husband and a wife, as one of them doing so
contributes to their demises.

Hamlet Vs Franco Zeffirelli's
Almost four hundred years after William Shakespeare wrote one of his most famous plays,
"Hamlet", Franco Zeffirelli directed a film inspired my William Shakespeare's play, "Hamlet", and
also titled his work "Hamlet". It would make sense that there would be different kinds of adaptations
to the works of Shakespeare considering his fame. He is one of the most influential people in
regards to the English language, so it is logical that Franco Zeffirelli saw potential in creating a
movie about "Hamlet". William Shakespeare's play "Hamlet" and Franco Zeffirelli's "Hamlet" have
many similarities such as characters and plot. Both works also have several differences such as

For example, the play opens up with a scene which included castle guards talking about and spotting
the ghost of the dead king, whereas the movie begins with a scene of Hamlet Sr.'s funeral. This
scene is not found in the original playwright written by Shakespeare. It is rather a creation of
Zeffirelli created for storytelling purposes. Another way the movie differs from the play is that
Laertes never asked Claudius for permission to leave to France. In the play he asks Claudius, "my
dread lord, your leave and favour to return to France" (Act 1, Scene 2, page 20). Zeffirelli decided to
leave this scene out. Another difference between the movie and the play is that the famous soliloquy
in which Hamlet says "To be or not to be" (Act 3, Scene 1, page 138) is said too early in the movie.
In the play, Hamlet says this famous line to himself during the third act, however in the movie,
Hamlet says this soliloquy closer to the first act. Additionally, the ghost of Hamlet Sr. was not
wearing armour in the movie, whereas he was wearing armour in the play. Finally, the movie chose
to focus on the incestuous relationship between Hamlet and Gertrude much more than the play

Comparing Hamlet And Zeffirelli's Movies
All films about Hamlet have extremely close similarities. However, certain aspects of one movie
enhances the play even more. Though all three films were great, the most exceptional film of the
three is the version by Franco Zeffirelli. The reason why this film is better than the others is because
Hamlet's character is more compelling, Freudian theory makes the play more interesting, and
because the small details in the movie make the play better.
To begin, Hamlet's character in Franco Zeffirelli's film is more interesting than the other three films
watched because Hamlet's character is more insane than the other two. To give an example, in the
first movie, Hamlet's character shows his insanity by contemplating suicide on a cliff. This scene ...

With Freudian theory, the play Hamlet is even more interesting. With the Freudian theory lens, when
watching Hamlet, one could see how the Oedipus complex is present. Without learning the lens, the
play Hamlet would be straightforward and the viewers would lack the ability to see the tension
between Hamlet and his mother. Without Freudian theory, Hamlet is like any other typical movie
about revenge, however with the addition of this lens, the audience has a newer perspective on the
film which makes it more interesting. The first film has a little Freudian theory present, but it does
not show what Hamlet truly wants greatly, thereby making the plot of the play boring. The audience
already has an idea about how the movie will end, which is with Claudius dying. In the last film, the
audience can also assume what is going to happen to Claudius because the plot is very
straightforward. The difference in the second movie, however, is that Freudian theory is shown.
Freudian theory adds to the plot and theme of the play and this prevents the watchers from knowing
what the plot is about. Not only does Hamlet want to kill his uncle, he also wants to have sexual
intercourse with his mother. The audience cannot extrapolate this idea from the plot and because of
this it surprises them and enhances the

Sanity: Boundaries of the Mind
The mind is a beautiful thing. The boundaries that someone can extend their rationality is different
in each and every person. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, the balance of sanity and madness is tested.
Hamlet's way of thinking is changed, but in a way that his personality is only a front. By looking at
the different events that Hamlet overcame, we can observe the passion for acting that many readers
do not come across; knowing the importance of acting is imperative when questioning Hamlet's
sanity, since he is only acting insane, and is rational and in control of himself throughout the play.

All along Hamlet had been trying to prove that Claudius has killed King Hamlet and the play was
the perfect way to do it. The
"Mouse–trap" is about the murder of a king, meant to be King Hamlet, and the murder was of a king
dying by poison being put into his ear, exactly the way that Claudius had killed King Hamlet.
Hamlet wanted to see the guilty reaction of Claudius and hope that everyone would then know the
truth. In act III scene ii, Hamlet is discussing the play with the actors. From the beginning of the
play, Hamlet has been acing insane, and this moment shows that excellent acting ability. Before the
play commences, Hamlet is giving the players tips and advice on acting and how the play should be
read. He tells the players to "Speak the speech I pray you as pronounced it to you, /trippingly in the
tongue, but if you mouth it as many of/your players do, I had as life the town–crier spoke my/lines"
(Shakespeare). What he is trying to emphasize is that he want them to make the play very believable
and as real as possible. Hamlet is trying to make the play come to life in a way that people can see
that the actors are portraying real life. After Hamlet gives the players the lesson, a question comes to
mind; what would Hamlet know about acting? When Hamlet starts giving the players tips and

Comparing Zeffirelli's Adaptation Of Romeo And Juliet
"We look at the same stars and see such different things." In their film adaptations of William
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet directors Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann interpreted act 3
scene 1 very differently. Although these different interpretations have essentially the same dialogue
they contain different performances and different tones. Different performances can contribute
different things to the same scene, this is evident when comparing Zeffirelli and Luhrmann's
interpretations of act 3 scene 1. For starters in Zeffirelli's version actor Bruce Robinson plays
Benvolio as calm and collected throughout this film. This makes sense for the most of the film but
Benvolio should definitely be emotional when Mercutio dies. On the contrary, ... Show more

One example of this is Mercutio's motivation for fighting Tybalt. In Luhrmann's adaptation,
Mercutio decides to fight Tybalt because Tybalt is attacking Romeo, and Romeo is refusing to fight
back, it's dramatic and shows how much Mercutio cares about Romeo. In Zeffirelli's version,
Mercutio fights Tybalt because when Mercutio is sitting in a fountain Tybalt splashes him and
Benvolio, it's playful and sets the comedic tone for their fight. These different tones continue when
Mercutio and Tybalt begin to fight. Luhrmann's fight scene is an intense rage fueled duel between
the two men, you can feel their hatred for eachother. As opposed to the fight in Zeffirelli's scene
which is more of a fun game then a serious test of their fighting abilities, they don't want to hurt
each other they just want to have a good time. Furthermore, where Zeffirelli's scene takes place
during a normal sunny day the weather in Luhrmann's film is used to make this scene darker. In
Luhrmann's scene when Mercutio Delivers his line "a plague on both your houses" thunder booms
and the sky goes great, the weather worsens as the scene goes on, and it begins to rain at the climax
of the scene when Romeo kills Tybalt and the rain continues when Benvolio explains what
happened to Prince Escalus and Prince Escalus banishes Romeo. The Tone in Luhrmann's scene
makes the characters death's more emotional and sets the tragic tone for the rest of the film whereas,
the tone of Zeffirelli's makes it more fun to watch and contrasts how dark the rest of the film

I think it is also important that the statue is smaller than the skyscrapers as this suggests that the
families in this time were so powerful that they were in fact more influential than God. I think that
the purpose of the frantic introduction and the short takes represent snapshots taken by a camera and
give the impression that there is a lot of action in the film. Zeffirelli, however uses only 2 shots in
his opening with slow panning from left to right, this connotes a slow, more tranquil film. Luhrmann
ignores the stereotypes of Shakespeare, so therefore he has more freedom to portray the film in a
modern way. There is a quiet string quartet playing in Zeffirelli's opening which creates a calm
atmosphere. The non diegetic music in Luhrmann's is 'Cammina Burra', which is a dramatic opera
and as the music crescendos, all of the snapshots become faster and have more dramatic images like
gun battles and fighting. This makes the audience realise that the music will be connected to what is
happening in the film, and the directors could use a diminuendo to build tension during tense
moments. This opera connotes the emotions anger, despair and confusion, and because the music
climaxes early on, before the audience has time to settle into the film, suggests that the film is going
to be action packed and will grab their attention straight away. The uses of the various sizes of

Hamlet is one of Shakespeare's most well–known and most frequently performed plays. Many
people have enjoyed reading and watching hamlet, both on stage and theatrically. Directors often
add different styles to their pieces to invoke different moods. These styles change as time

direction of William Shakespeare's' Hamlet act 3 scene 1. Zeffirelli's interpretation of Shakespeare's

Branagh's use of setting is not as effective as other cinematic depictions of the play, as it does not
fully enlighten the sad mood. Branagh's style of direction takes away the sad mood. To begin,
Branagh uses a colorful setting to take away the emphasis on the surrounding sadness, while
maintaining a sad mood. In Branagh's version his portrayal of the setting during the interaction
between Hamlet and Ophelia captures the sad mood. Branagh captures Hamlets movement through
an array of rare emotion as he takes in Ophelia's words. When Hamlet and Ophelia first see each
other, happy music and warm light and bright setting create a light, triumphant mood that showcases
their deep love. The statement "I did love you once" (3.1.14) is spoken with tears in his eyes that
capture Hamlet's love. When Ophelia's returns the tokens Hamlet shows his feelings of betrayal and
all of his emotions shift as he grapples at understanding. As Hamlet's anger rises, the music shifts to
match it. This interpretation suggests that with deep love comes the ability to hurt each other deeply.
Shortly after Ophelia's sorrowful speech helps aid in developing a sad mood. The use of setting is
not as effective as other depiction of the scene yet it prevails in its intention of creating a sad mood.
Next, the setting during Hamlet's soliloquy is what establishes a sad mood. Branagh's makes Hamlet
speaks his soliloquy steadily in a large room filled with mirrors. Mirrors are often used to suggest
self–reflection and clarity. It is ironic Branagh's emotionally susceptible Hamlet is associated with
an item of reflection and clarity. Branagh's Hamlet does not shift from suicidal to contemplative at

The prologue gives the audience helpful information on the latest goings on in Verona, which helps

Shakespearian language that is used, " The fearful passage of their death–marked love." The use of
opposition within the text is effective in conveying the contrast between Romeo and Juliet and the
two families. As well as this, death and love are opposites that don't normally feature in the same
sentence, causing a strong, instant effect on the audience. Although the Luhrmann film has a modern
setting and opens with a news anchorwoman reading the prologue from the play, it is read in one go

a traditional presentation of the words so that when his vision appears it is even more explosive.
Although Luhrmann works hard at communicating the text, the American–speaking actors prove a
difficulty. Dialogue is certainly not of prime importance in this film. In Luhrmann's film the words

Hamlet Film Comparison
William Shakespeare's Hamlet, a play that has been turned into films numerous times by many
directors, is one of the most admired plays written by Shakespeare. Kenneth Branagh and Franco
Zeffirelli are both known for their adaptations of William Shakespeare's Hamlet. They have both
created two completely different and unique films from the same widely known play. Based on the
interpretation of the Ghost, the character of Ophelia, as well as Hamlet's "To be or not to be" speech,
Franco Zeffirelli's adaption of Hamlet proves to be significantly superior to Kenneth Branagh's film.

In Zeffirelli's adaptation, Ophelia is constantly being portrayed as small and fragile. For instance,
she is shot from a high angle, making her appear more defenseless and powerless. Zeffirelli's choice
of casting Helena Bonham Carter as Ophelia reinforces the idea of innocence since she appears to
be very young and naïve. Throughout the film, Ophelia is constantly being shown separate from
everyone else, which hints at her impending insanity in the hands of Hamlet. By leaving Ophelia
and killing her father, Hamlet causes her to be truly isolated and alone. Close to the end, Zeffirelli
shows Ophelia as an unstable girl driven mad by Hamlet's cruel tactics and her father's murder.
When Gertrude sees Ophelia through the window, she sees how truly mad she has become. Dressed
in dirty rags and speaking nonsense, her innocence seems to be lost when she acts in a sexual
manner towards one of the guards by grabbing his belt. As Ophelia sings during the mad scene,
Gertrude is very clearly frightened by what she sees. The camera close–ups also separate Ophelia
from everyone else by showing the singular response of everyone to her madness. Her loneliness
and irrational behaviours causes the audience to empathize with Ophelia. Although the effect that
she has on the film is overall very emotional, she makes the audience see Hamlet in an unflattering
light as the one who drove her to madness. Ophelia brings about the idea of crumbling innocence,

Hamlet is a tragic play, written by William Shakespeare between 1599 and 1602, but as years have
gone by, there have been made many movies produced in order to visually illustrate how the events
of the play occurred. This allows the film director's interpretation of Hamlet to have an effect on the
audience's understanding of the play, because they understand the play the same way as the director.
One of the most significant act and scene in the whole play is Act I Scene V. The film work of

Also, Gibson's Hamlet being stronger shows the impact of the setting on the story of Hamlet,
because everyone cast appears either healthier or stronger than one would imagine them from

Hamlet, some of which remain true to the text while others take greater liberties from the original
format. Director Kenneth Branagh's 1996 production of Hamlet was true to Shakespeare's work in
that the films dialogue was delivered word or word as it is presented in the text. In contrast, Franco
Zeffirelli conducted his 1990 production of Hamlet in a much more liberal direction in which lines,
scenes and characters were omitted from film. I argue that from the perspective of an individual
with moderate knowledge in Shakespearian literature, that the best film versions of Hamlet are those
that take the most liberties from the text. I concur that the following elements reflect the level of
liberty taken in regards to the text and that these elements determine which film is the best; changes
to dialogue, changes to plot, presence of theme portrayal of emotions and the setting.
In 1996 Kenneth Branagh starred as Hamlet in his self–directed version of the play. Branagh's script
for the film was fiercely loyal to Shakespeare's original words which resulted in a four hour
cinematic experience. The immense amount of dialogue was delivered rapidly and added a layer of
complexity which effected the audience's ability to analyze and comprehend the story line. A lack of
understanding is problematic as it contributes to a loss of character development as well as
confusion within the

Romeo And Juliet Compare And Contrast
Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet has been made into many different art forms. One of the main
ways that the play is portrayed is in film. The 1968 Franco Zeffirelli version of Romeo and Juliet
differs from the 1997 Baz Luhrmann version called William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The
balcony scene is each movies highlights many differences in each film. These two scenes differ in
setting, believability, and costumes. In the balcony scene in each versions of this play the setting is
very different. In Zeffirelli's version of the play the scene is based in and "Old timey" home, sort of
looks like a castle, which is probably what the house for the wealthy would look like in
Shakespeare's time. Also in this version Romeo isn't right at her ... Show more content on

In the 1968 version Romeo is wearing some variety of a doublet. Which in the times that the 1968
versions were portraying that would be the normal thing to wear to the type of party Juliet's family
held that night. In Luhrmann's version Romeo just got out of a costume party, so instead of wearing
a normal evening outfit, he was wearing a knight costume. In each balcony scene Juliet was
preparing to go to bed, so she was wearing her pajamas. In Zeffirelli's version Juliet was dressed to
go to sleep, but she was wearing a very uncomfortable looking, very tight, "showy" nightgown.
While as in the Luhrmann's version Juliet was also wearing a nightgown. But she wore one that was
fit to actually go to sleep in, something more comfortable and reasonable. Both of these scenes have
very similar costumes, but in the 1997 Luhrmann's version the outfit that Juliet has to wear in my
opinion, is a lot more reasonable and believable for what Juliet would be wearing at that time of
night, and Romeo looks casual and reasonable because the party just ended, for that reason I feel
that Luhrmann's version is a lot more reasonable making it

Zeffirelli's Romeo And Juliet
Love is powerful, bringing both joy and harm. Romeo and Juliet are two unlucky lovers that had to
see the dangerous side of love. Two children from opposing families fall madly and irrationally in
love. They run away, but Juliet is supposed to marry Paris. The plot is to escape by pretending Juliet
is dead by using a potion, reviving her, and running away but the plan doesn't work and they kill
themselves because they can't live without one another. In this play the setting plays an important
role because the setting can be an extremely impact of a movie and even become a part of the story.

who the people are and the way they live. In telling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

set on stage, it can convey so much about who the people are and the way they live. In telling the
story of Romeo and Juliet, Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann use different methods and make
different director choices to develop the setting in the story. Franco Zeffirelli is more effective
because he does an excellent job on the setting because he makes look like a modern day. Here are
three examples why it's effective, one reason is he adds a lot of flowers and candles around Juliet's
bed which makes it look modern because it looks like it's taking place today because a lot of people
take flowers. Another reason is the bed in which Juliet lays is set up high on the altar, it has stairs
leading up to it which makes it look modern as well because it looks like when the corpse is in a
funeral home. The final reason is that the pathway leading to Juliet is illuminated by the lit up
candles which makes it look realistic

Romeo And Juliet By Franco Zeffirelli

  • 1. Romeo And Juliet By Franco Zeffirelli The name of the movie is Romeo and Juliet. The director was Franco Zeffirelli. The film studio or distributor was Paramount Pictures. The film was released in 1968. The main characters were Romeo who was played by Leonard Whiting and Juliet who was played by Olivia Hussey. Other characters where Juliet's Nurse who was played by Pat Heywood and Mercutio who was played by John McEnery and also Tybalt who was played by Michael York. William Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design and an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. It also won a Golden Globe for Best English–Language Foreign Film and both actors won a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer. During the first part of the film ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Comparing Film And Luhrmann's Film In Zeffirelli's film and Luhrmann's film, there are many similar elements as well as many different elements. Both the settings are based out side, make up is similar, cinematography has the same characters, and the acting is serious as well as dramatic in both films. Some things that were different are the costumes, props, and sounds. In Zeffirelli's film, the setting is outside in a village shopping type area with a fountain. Mercutio and Benvoleo see the Capulets coming there way. I think the reason why Zeffirelli decided to have them fight outside on the village area was because there are many people who can watch the fight see who killed who. In Luhrmann's film, the setting is at a beach, still filled with many people. Mercutio is sitting by the other Montagues when Tybalt and the other Capulets come there way. ... In Luhrmann's, the Montagues are wearing their tropical shirts with no under layers, and the Capulets are wearing all black, a bit more formal than the Montagues. The style costumes still represent who the two houses still are. Because of the different time settings, the outfits are anywhere near the same style. In both of the films, the actors had lots of dirt on their face from rolling around and fighting on the floor. In Zeffirelli's film there is less blood on Romeo's face and Tybalt's face, but in Luhrmann's film there is a lot more dirt and blood on Romeos face and shirt as well as Tybalts face and clothes. I think the reason why Luhrmann's film had a bit more blood, dirt, and more tears was to show how much Mercutio mean't to Romeo as a friend. In Zeffirelli's film there is less tears, blood, and tears but Romeo still shows how upset he is with Tybalt by his dramatic sword fighting and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Comparing Zeffirelli's Romeo And Juliet Oftentimes, a writer or director wants to change a book into a movie or TV show. When doing this, he/she has the option of sticking to the original story line or changing significant details. Franco Zeffirelli chose the latter when making his film Romeo and Juliet. He strengthened the plot that came from William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet such as the love between Romeo and Juliet and the hatred of their families, but, ultimately, when remaking Shakespeare's play, Zeffirelli left the audience confused about why Romeo is our tragic hero and what happened between the families after the two lovers die. Zeffirelli improves upon some scenes from the play by adding more detail and giving the audience a good visualization. Throughout the play, Shakespeare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shakespeare delivers this scene in a way that does not truly explain what Mercutio was doing to the Nurse. In contrast, the film enhances this scene by truly showing the audience just how much of an important character the Nurse is. He does this by incorporating her into the scenes after serious moments, such as after Romeo asks Friar Lawrence to marry him and Juliet he has Mercutio mock the Nurse. Comedic scenes, like the one's played by the Nurse, are important to keep the audience's attention. Furthermore, in the play, Shakespeare describes the party scene where Romeo and Juliet fall in love with each others physical appearances (1.5.43–52) to be much less passionate and meaningful ... • 4. Essay on William Shakespeare's Hamlet movie I am not a big fan of the 1990 movie version of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, starring Mel Gibson. I feel that while it stands alone as a very well made movie and contains great acting performances throughout, I think that it strays too far from the original text and layout of the play. The omissions and transposing makes the play weaker, and while it is a great screenplay, it fails in comparison to Shakespeare's original work. The three things which bother me the most are the omission of Fortinbras and the handling of the, "To be or not to be..." soliloquy and the "Get thee to a nunnery..." scene, and Hamlet's Oedipus complex. Omitting the subplot of Fortinbras took away the whole political aspect of the piece. It also weakened the ending. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I felt they through away the Hamlet/Ophelia scene and turned something beautiful into something boring. The only thing that makes it work is the great acting performances of Mel Gibson and Helena–Bonham Carter. Carter is superb as Ophelia, much better than Kate Winslet, who was great in the Branagh version. I was pleasantly shocked at the performance, especially the scene where goes insane after finding out her father is dead. That is something else that greatly bothers me. I don't like the way Gibson was directed to play the scene in which he kills Polonius. He doesn't even play it like he cares that he did it. That also makes Hamlet seem like a man who does not have a mind. I read somewhere once that Gibson felt the same thing about the scene. Ian Holm gives a very fine performance as Polonius. Alan Bates also shines as Claudius. He gives such a fine performance in the role. I am not a big fan of Glenn Close, but she was wonderful as Queen Gertrude. I just don't agree with Oedipus story line. I don't feel that the original text calls for it to be so played out. Shakespeare hints at incestual activities in a lot of his plays, including between Tybalt and his aunt in Romeo & Juliet. But I don't feel it should be taken so literally. It made Hamlet seem as though he really was completely insane. That, to me, keeps the whole play from working. But again, as a movie, it works. Mel Gibson gives a very fine performance as the tragic hero. The only times which he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Zeffirelli Versus Luhrmann's Film Zeffirelli's film depiction of the balcony scene is superior to Luhrmann's film because it is truer to Shakespeare's play and has a better interpretation of the play to film. The films are similar in that it's night and Juliet looks out her balcony as Romeo leaves her house. Although the Luhrmann film depiction during the balcony scene was in a lavish house which would have never been seen during the time frame of when the play was written. There may have been lavish houses during the time the play was written, but they don't come close to the setting in the Zeffirelli film. This plays a key role in the film seeing that the accuracy of the events of the scene help to give the viewers an enhanced feel to the original atmosphere. Another significant ... • 6. Comparing Zeffirelli and Luhrmann's Versions of Romeo and... "For never was a story of more woe Than this of Juliet and her Romeo." – William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, 5.3 'Romeo and Juliet' is a tragic play about two star crossed lovers written by Shakespeare in 1595. The play is a timeless teenage tradgedy. "The play champions the 16th Century belief that true love always strikes at first sight," (Lamb 1993: Introduction) and even in modern times an audience still want to believe in such a thing as love at first sight. Act II Scene II the balcony scene displays that romantic notion perfectly. "The most filmed of all plays, 'Romeo and Juliet', with its universal themes... remains uniquely adaptable for any time period," (Botnick, 2002). Directors Franco Zeffirelli (1968) and Baz Luhrman ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Luhrman has based his version at Verona Beach; America and instead of basing it in the 16th century like Zeffirelli, he had his film based in the 20th century, with mansions, shiny cars and bright lights. While Zeffirelli paced his film in an Iambic pentameter – a traditional Shakespeare pace; Luhrman never kept his film at a solid pace. "By modernizing these aspects of the play, and reconstructing the prologue, Luhrmann creates a movie that is more interesting to the modern viewers." As Zeffirelli may have believed famous actors would steal his show he instead hired fresh new faces to give the movie a more fresh, innocence value, But Luhrman used well known actors to play the lead roles. This worked because more people were attracted to the film by the actors. Zeffirelli used symbols to help capture his audience. Some were subtle, others were meant to get the audiences attention. For example Romeo climbing over the high wall to reach Juliet's balcony was a subtle symbol showing the heights and challenges he would face for true love, and even the fact the scene was set on a balcony overlooking an orchid which was may have been meant to symbolise the 'natural love' or 'green' being fresh and inexperienced. • 7. The Adaption of William Shakespeare´s Romeo and Juliet The Adaptation of Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet, written by Shakespeare, is a world–known tragedy. Torn between two enemy households, Romeo and Juliet try to keep their love alive. The passionate story of their love has been adapted into several movies. While each movie has its own charm, Baz Luhrmann's modern adaptation has its noteworthy features that dissociate it from Franco Zeffirelli's adaptation. By staying true to the story, the characters, and the creativity he uses, Luhrmann takes the movie to a next stage. The tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet is known around the world. To make it as virtuous as Shakespeare has written, the scenes should be prepared thoughtfully, and the consistency should be preserved. Peter Travers, an American critic, writes in Rolling Stone, "Luhrmann cuts the text as well, though not as damagingly (as Zeffirelli). His point is not to distract you from the words, as Zeffirelli did, but to lead you to them." (Travers) Travers emphasizes on the accomplishment that Luhrmann has achieved by cutting the write scenes. Unlike Zeffirelli did in the scenes of first–sight love and the fight scene between Romeo and Tybalt, Luhrmann takes the play, and evaluates it effectively. He accomplishes the play by abridging the play tactically. Luhrmann takes separate paths with Zeffirelli, and uses the scenes smoothly, and keeps his audience interested. While Luhrmann succeeds to preserve the consistency of the play, Zeffirelli manages to display some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Act 2 Scene 2 Comparison Of Romeo And Juliet Romeo and Juliet Act 2 Scene 2 Comparison There are millions of different well–known plays around the world, some of these plays have been performed many times over and over again. Even though these plays are repeatedly performed, every time there is a difference, every time something has changed. Directors have this power and ability, to be able to change how a character looks, or the point of view, or even just the facial expressions of the character. All of these little differences affect the play and make it look brand new every single time. Setting is an element which can be looked over by the viewer. Sometimes what makes a scene work can be fully tied to its setting and props. With a setting that is realistic and well thought, you can truly tie a scene together. In the Franco Zeffirelli version of the play, we can see that the setting is around the Capulet mansion, by Juliet's balcony. Romeo is below hiding in the bushes. The leaves of the bushes and how Romeo is below them show us how he is hiding and can't be seen by anyone, the night sky and how dark it is in this scene also hide Romeo. Juliet is sitting on the ledge of her balcony. In this production, the balcony is made very wide, so in the scene, Juliet can walk along the entire balcony before Romeo speaks. This also gives her enough space to run away when she is scared by Romeo's voice. The plot is not affected too much by these choices other than being able to have Juliet almost run away from Romeo. Through these setting options that Franco Zeffirelli took during his production, we have a medieval time period look and a more original looking production. However, the ... William Shakespeare's Hamlet and Franco Zeffireli's film version of the story are different in many ways, but the basic characters and basic plot remain the same. Franco Zeffirelli's screenplay is an edited, re–vamped version of the original tragedy in which lines are cut and scenes are modified. Additionally, Zeffirelli modifies Shakespeare's ghost scenes and uses narrative and film techniques to both create an overall suspenseful atmosphere and generate empathetic feelings towards Hamlet. Horatio, a man of logic and reason, is also scared and admits that, "It harrows me with fear and wonder," thereby allowing the audience to learn that the former king, father of Hamlet, is dead. There is a ghost clothed in his armor strolling the castle's battlements all through the night. The barricades in the ghost scene of the film are foggy, filled with moonlight, and dark. The setting gives the scene an even eerier feel, giving the viewer the idea that what is about to take place could be frightening, suspenseful, or spooky in some way. The icy clouds of breath hovering throughout the shot chill the viewer. The sky is empty, creating an isolated feeling. It is obvious that this scene takes place at night, when the ghosts are able to freely roam; however, the background lighting indicates that day is approaching, and that the ghost will soon have to return to wherever it stays during the day. In the film, the ghosts do not appear as soon as they do in the play. Instead, Zeffirelli rearranges the order of some of the scenes. Differences Of Romeo And Juliet In Zeffirelli Film In Act 2, the balcony scenes from both films show the quick and youthful love of Romeo and Juliet, but the films display a difference between the two relationships. In the Zeffirelli film, when Romeo and Juliet are kissing, it is sloppy and messy. The kisses they share look rushed. Romeo is kissing Juliet all over the place, not letting her talk. While Juliet is trying to finish her sentences, she gets smothered with kisses from Romeo. This conveys to the viewer that the lovers are in a youthful relationship with a lot of commitment but with little experience from both of them. Despite maturity being a desirable trait for many people, it is necessary for Juliet to be depicted as young and naïve. Franco Zeffirelli is capable of achieving this by casting Olivia Hussey. Acting well, Olivia was capable of playing the role of Juliet, as it would have been in the play. On the other hand, Claire Danes playing Juliet, as seen in Luhrmann's adaptation, was good; but could have been performed better. • 13. Hamlet Movie Adaptation Hamlet was written in 1609 by William Shakespeare; Shakespeare is one of the greatest poets and playwrights. Since the original performance of Hamlet, there have been many movie adaptations. Some of the many well–known film directors for these movies are Kenneth Branagh, Franco Zeffirelli and Sir Laurence Olivier. From the above film directors, I will compare and contrast Zeffirelli's production of Hamlet to the original Shakespeare's play Hamlet. Zeffirelli's version of Hamlet is one of the sound versions of Hamlet. It was produced and starred Mel Gibson in the late 1900s. Comparing the film version of Hamlet to the play, Zeffirelli has made noticeable changes in the movie including some clothing choices and characters' reactions. He also altered and cut lines from the original Shakespeare play. Shakespeare centralized the theme of revenge in the ghost scene in Act 1 Scene 5 with the use of literary devices. In the movie adaptation, Zeffirelli used a different approach to portray the theme, without the use of any literary devices. He instead used costume choices, characters' reactions and different word choices. Zeffirelli used a creative way to portray Hamlet's father wearing a white shirt with black pants instead of Shakespeare's choice of armour. He used this to show how Hamlet's father would look in 90's society. He made Hamlet wear black clothing throughout the movie to show that Hamlet was the only one who cared and grieved throughout his mother's marriage and until his own death. Zeffirelli changed the characters' reactions throughout the scenes. One of the character changes is during Hamlet's father's ghost soliloquy. Instead of his father being projected as angry towards his wife and his brother in the movie, he uses a calm tone. In the movie while Hamlet was listening to his father, he should have looked angry and upset. Instead he had no emotions while listening to his father. In the movie, he should have an angry tone and should be eager to plot revenge on who killed his father, instead he did not talk throughout his father's death story. Zeffirelli chose this so that the audience will wait and anticipate when Hamlet's anger will grow and his reaction during the scene. With the removal and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Instead of adapting Shakespeare's language, Zeffirelli decided to keep most of the wording similar to the book, which made the movie seem authentic. The clothing worn in the scene is an correct representation of Shakespeare's play as it mirrors clothes worn in Renaissance England rather than parodying it with urbanized clothing. The setting conveyed in the scene is similar to the setting described in the play, mainly due to it being set in the same time period as the play. However, Baz Luhrmann's depiction of this scene in his movie contained more accurate actors and also kept some of the language true to the original play. The actors in Luhrmann's play are closer to the ages of Romeo and Juliet than Zeffirelli's actors. The variations in the intonation, tones, and stage directions in the four different variations of the scene, show the viewer or the audience how differently they were created and how each director has different ideas about how it should look and sound. They had different ideas about how to show the emotions of the characters. The stage directions in the first scene by George Cukor are pretty general. They show how the characters do have a rivalry with each other. During the fight, you could tell that each person had different directions to follow during the fight. Hamlet Movie Vs Play In Zeffirelli's portrayal of Hamlet, there are parts added and subtracted from the play in part to make the movie closer to standard movie length but also to show more of how Hamlet's mind can work the way it does. There are several other movie adaptations of Hamlet that stay more aligned with the original play, but movies are supposed to make some interpretations of plays because the actors need to try and express their characters' feelings. Arguably the most realistic interpretation of the original Hamlet would be Zeffirelli's adaptation because, although it cuts out the scene with the ghost, it adds reason to why Hamlet would be suspicious of more characters by adding him silently to the background of the scene. In Hamlet Act 1 of the play there is no trace of Hamlet while Polonius is talking to Ophelia yet in Act 2 Hamlet knows that Polonius is using Ophelia which is why Hamlet berates Polonius so much (Shakespeare 1.3.95–145 2.2.187–237). If Friar Lawrence had not given them permission to marry, then the lovers would either have no good reason to continue loving each other and move on (as young love often fades quickly due to it being based on attractiveness rather than true love), or they would not be obliged to conform to the roles of a husband and a wife, as one of them doing so contributes to their demises. Hamlet Vs Franco Zeffirelli's Almost four hundred years after William Shakespeare wrote one of his most famous plays, "Hamlet", Franco Zeffirelli directed a film inspired my William Shakespeare's play, "Hamlet", and also titled his work "Hamlet". It would make sense that there would be different kinds of adaptations to the works of Shakespeare considering his fame. He is one of the most influential people in regards to the English language, so it is logical that Franco Zeffirelli saw potential in creating a movie about "Hamlet". William Shakespeare's play "Hamlet" and Franco Zeffirelli's "Hamlet" have many similarities such as characters and plot. For example, the play opens up with a scene which included castle guards talking about and spotting the ghost of the dead king, whereas the movie begins with a scene of Hamlet Sr.'s funeral. This scene is not found in the original playwright written by Shakespeare. It is rather a creation of Zeffirelli created for storytelling purposes. Another way the movie differs from the play is that Laertes never asked Claudius for permission to leave to France. In the play he asks Claudius, "my dread lord, your leave and favour to return to France" (Act 1, Scene 2, page 20). Zeffirelli decided to leave this scene out. Another difference between the movie and the play is that the famous soliloquy in which Hamlet says "To be or not to be" (Act 3, Scene 1, page 138) is said too early in the movie. In the play, Hamlet says this famous line to himself during the third act, however in the movie, Hamlet says this soliloquy closer to the first act. • 29. Comparing Hamlet And Zeffirelli's Movies All films about Hamlet have extremely close similarities. However, certain aspects of one movie enhances the play even more. Though all three films were great, the most exceptional film of the three is the version by Franco Zeffirelli. The reason why this film is better than the others is because Hamlet's character is more compelling, Freudian theory makes the play more interesting, and because the small details in the movie make the play better. To begin, Hamlet's character in Franco Zeffirelli's film is more interesting than the other three films watched because Hamlet's character is more insane than the other two. To give an example, in the first movie, Hamlet's character shows his insanity by contemplating suicide on a cliff. This scene ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With Freudian theory, the play Hamlet is even more interesting. With the Freudian theory lens, when watching Hamlet, one could see how the Oedipus complex is present. Without learning the lens, the play Hamlet would be straightforward and the viewers would lack the ability to see the tension between Hamlet and his mother. Without Freudian theory, Hamlet is like any other typical movie about revenge, however with the addition of this lens, the audience has a newer perspective on the film which makes it more interesting. The first film has a little Freudian theory present, but it does not show what Hamlet truly wants greatly, thereby making the plot of the play boring. The audience already has an idea about how the movie will end, which is with Claudius dying. In the last film, the audience can also assume what is going to happen to Claudius because the plot is very straightforward. The difference in the second movie, however, is that Freudian theory is shown. Freudian theory adds to the plot and theme of the play and this prevents the watchers from knowing what the plot is about. Not only does Hamlet want to kill his uncle, he also wants to have sexual intercourse with his mother. The audience cannot extrapolate this idea from the plot and because of this it surprises them and enhances the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The boundaries that someone can extend their rationality is different in each and every person. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, the balance of sanity and madness is tested. Hamlet's way of thinking is changed, but in a way that his personality is only a front. By looking at the different events that Hamlet overcame, we can observe the passion for acting that many readers do not come across; knowing the importance of acting is imperative when questioning Hamlet's sanity, since he is only acting insane, and is rational and in control of himself throughout the play. All along Hamlet had been trying to prove that Claudius has killed King Hamlet and the play was the perfect way to do it. The "Mouse–trap" is about the murder of a king, meant to be King Hamlet, and the murder was of a king dying by poison being put into his ear, exactly the way that Claudius had killed King Hamlet. Hamlet wanted to see the guilty reaction of Claudius and hope that everyone would then know the truth. In act III scene ii, Hamlet is discussing the play with the actors. From the beginning of the play, Hamlet has been acing insane, and this moment shows that excellent acting ability. Before the play commences, Hamlet is giving the players tips and advice on acting and how the play should be read. He tells the players to "Speak the speech I pray you as pronounced it to you, /trippingly in the tongue, but if you mouth it as many of/your players do, I had as life the town–crier spoke my/lines" (Shakespeare). What he is trying to emphasize is that he want them to make the play very believable and as real as possible. Hamlet is trying to make the play come to life in a way that people can see that the actors are portraying real life. • 31. Comparing Zeffirelli's Adaptation Of Romeo And Juliet "We look at the same stars and see such different things." In their film adaptations of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet directors Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann interpreted act 3 scene 1 very differently. Although these different interpretations have essentially the same dialogue they contain different performances and different tones. Different performances can contribute different things to the same scene, this is evident when comparing Zeffirelli and Luhrmann's interpretations of act 3 scene 1. For starters in Zeffirelli's version actor Bruce Robinson plays Benvolio as calm and collected throughout this film. This makes sense for the most of the film but Benvolio should definitely be emotional when Mercutio dies. On the contrary, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One example of this is Mercutio's motivation for fighting Tybalt. In Luhrmann's adaptation, Mercutio decides to fight Tybalt because Tybalt is attacking Romeo, and Romeo is refusing to fight back, it's dramatic and shows how much Mercutio cares about Romeo. In Zeffirelli's version, Mercutio fights Tybalt because when Mercutio is sitting in a fountain Tybalt splashes him and Benvolio, it's playful and sets the comedic tone for their fight. These different tones continue when Mercutio and Tybalt begin to fight. Luhrmann's fight scene is an intense rage fueled duel between the two men, you can feel their hatred for eachother. As opposed to the fight in Zeffirelli's scene which is more of a fun game then a serious test of their fighting abilities, they don't want to hurt each other they just want to have a good time. Furthermore, where Zeffirelli's scene takes place during a normal sunny day the weather in Luhrmann's film is used to make this scene darker. In Luhrmann's scene when Mercutio Delivers his line "a plague on both your houses" thunder booms and the sky goes great, the weather worsens as the scene goes on, and it begins to rain at the climax of the scene when Romeo kills Tybalt and the rain continues when Benvolio explains what happened to Prince Escalus and Prince Escalus banishes Romeo. I think it is also important that the statue is smaller than the skyscrapers as this suggests that the families in this time were so powerful that they were in fact more influential than God. I think that the purpose of the frantic introduction and the short takes represent snapshots taken by a camera and give the impression that there is a lot of action in the film. Zeffirelli, however uses only 2 shots in his opening with slow panning from left to right, this connotes a slow, more tranquil film. Luhrmann ignores the stereotypes of Shakespeare, so therefore he has more freedom to portray the film in a modern way. There is a quiet string quartet playing in Zeffirelli's opening which creates a calm atmosphere. The non diegetic music in Luhrmann's is 'Cammina Burra', which is a dramatic opera and as the music crescendos, all of the snapshots become faster and have more dramatic images like gun battles and fighting. This makes the audience realise that the music will be connected to what is happening in the film, and the directors could use a diminuendo to build tension during tense moments. Directors often add different styles to their pieces to invoke different moods. These styles change as time progresses; predominant in the comparison between Franco Zeffirelli's and Kenneth Branagh's direction of William Shakespeare's' Hamlet act 3 scene 1. Zeffirelli's interpretation of Shakespeare's Hamlet act 3 scene 1 is more effective than Branagh's interpretation. Branagh's use of setting is not as effective as other cinematic depictions of the play, as it does not fully enlighten the sad mood. Branagh's style of direction takes away the sad mood. To begin, Branagh uses a colorful setting to take away the emphasis on the surrounding sadness, while maintaining a sad mood. In Branagh's version his portrayal of the setting during the interaction between Hamlet and Ophelia captures the sad mood. Branagh captures Hamlets movement through an array of rare emotion as he takes in Ophelia's words. When Hamlet and Ophelia first see each other, happy music and warm light and bright setting create a light, triumphant mood that showcases their deep love. The statement "I did love you once" (3.1.14) is spoken with tears in his eyes that capture Hamlet's love. When Ophelia's returns the tokens Hamlet shows his feelings of betrayal and all of his emotions shift as he grapples at understanding. As Hamlet's anger rises, the music shifts to match it. This interpretation suggests that with deep love comes the ability to hurt each other deeply. Shortly after Ophelia's sorrowful speech helps aid in developing a sad mood. The use of setting is not as effective as other depiction of the scene yet it prevails in its intention of creating a sad mood. Next, the setting during Hamlet's soliloquy is what establishes a sad mood. Branagh's makes Hamlet speaks his soliloquy steadily in a large room filled with mirrors. Mirrors are often used to suggest self–reflection and clarity. It is ironic Branagh's emotionally susceptible Hamlet is associated with an item of reflection and clarity. The prologue gives the audience helpful information on the latest goings on in Verona, which helps to fill you in on what is happening. As the prologue continues I become aware of the original Shakespearian language that is used, " The fearful passage of their death–marked love." The use of opposition within the text is effective in conveying the contrast between Romeo and Juliet and the two families. As well as this, death and love are opposites that don't normally feature in the same sentence, causing a strong, instant effect on the audience. Although the Luhrmann film has a modern setting and opens with a news anchorwoman reading the prologue from the play, it is read in one go and there is nothing offered to the viewer to make it clearer. It seems that Luhrmann wants to set up a traditional presentation of the words so that when his vision appears it is even more explosive. Although Luhrmann works hard at communicating the text, the American–speaking actors prove a difficulty. Dialogue is certainly not of prime importance in this film. Zeffirelli's choice of casting Helena Bonham Carter as Ophelia reinforces the idea of innocence since she appears to be very young and naïve. Throughout the film, Ophelia is constantly being shown separate from everyone else, which hints at her impending insanity in the hands of Hamlet. By leaving Ophelia and killing her father, Hamlet causes her to be truly isolated and alone. Close to the end, Zeffirelli shows Ophelia as an unstable girl driven mad by Hamlet's cruel tactics and her father's murder. When Gertrude sees Ophelia through the window, she sees how truly mad she has become. Dressed in dirty rags and speaking nonsense, her innocence seems to be lost when she acts in a sexual manner towards one of the guards by grabbing his belt. As Ophelia sings during the mad scene, Gertrude is very clearly frightened by what she sees. The camera close–ups also separate Ophelia from everyone else by showing the singular response of everyone to her madness. Her loneliness and irrational behaviours causes the audience to empathize with Ophelia. Hamlet Film Analysis Over the course of the past fifty years there have been many cinematic productions of Shakespeare's Hamlet, some of which remain true to the text while others take greater liberties from the original format. Director Kenneth Branagh's 1996 production of Hamlet was true to Shakespeare's work in that the films dialogue was delivered word or word as it is presented in the text. In contrast, Franco Zeffirelli conducted his 1990 production of Hamlet in a much more liberal direction in which lines, scenes and characters were omitted from film. I argue that from the perspective of an individual with moderate knowledge in Shakespearian literature, that the best film versions of Hamlet are those that take the most liberties from the text. I concur that the following elements reflect the level of liberty taken in regards to the text and that these elements determine which film is the best; changes to dialogue, changes to plot, presence of theme portrayal of emotions and the setting. In 1996 Kenneth Branagh starred as Hamlet in his self–directed version of the play. Branagh's script for the film was fiercely loyal to Shakespeare's original words which resulted in a four hour cinematic experience.
