File formats
1.
2. .Jpg
• Joint Photograph Expert Group is a raster file meaning that it
uses pixel data. Some advantages of using .Jpg are that it is
widely supported for digital photography and the internet. it’s
also the most used out of all the file formats. The variable
compression allows you to change the file size. So this will
allow you to change the quality for example, when sending an
example of your work for someone to look over you don’t
need as good quality as when your printing off your work.
Disadvantages of using .Jpg is not suitable for simpler pictures
that contain few colours, broad areas of the same or similar
colours or stark differences in brightness. Also when
compressing a file it losses quailty.
3. .Bmp
• Windows Bitmap . This file format uses raster graphics which
means this format also uses pixels. The advantages when
using bitmap supports a wide range of colours which means
you will keep most of the colours in the photo and they will
not blend in with others. Also windows bitmap is compatible
with a wide range of existing windows programmes. The
Disadvantages when it comes to using .Bmp file format, is it
dose not support variable compression this makes it a big file
so it is nearly impossible to email. Windows Bitmap does not
support web browsers so it can only be used by windows, an
example of where this file format could be used is in office
jobs using windows programmes.
4. .Png
• Portable Network Graphics uses raster graphics this means it uses pixels
in the file format. advantages of using this file format is that it is a
platform independent format this is an advantage as it means you are able
to use this file format in many platform and your not tied down to one
type of platform. using this file format is that it can be opened by itself
also supports high-level lossless compression, lossless compression is
where you are able to make the file size smaller without the loss of quality
this is an advantage as if you are working for a media company and you
need to send a picture to someone because of the the file size you may
have to decrease the file size, however the quality of the picture will also
decrease so therefore using lossless compression you are able to make
large files smaller without decreasing the quality. Disadvantages are when
using this file format are, if you have an older browser and older programs
then .png may not support them and another disadvantage is that as an
internet file format, also it offers no support for multi-image files or
animated files.
5. .Cgm
• Computer Graphics Metafile CGM is a metafile,
which means it uses raster and vector data.
Advantages of using cgm is that it is a Free file format
which works on many systems. Also it is International
standard. Some Disadvantages are In some programs, CGM
needs a filter to convert it.
6. .Gif
• Graphics Interchange Format is a file format that uses raster
graphics which means they use pixels which are little squares
that make up images. Some of the advantages of using this
type of file format is that it is supported by a wide internet
standard it is easier for more people to access this type of file
format. also it uses lossless compression which means that
you are able to make large files smaller this it doesn’t ruin the
quality. Some of the disadvantages when using this file format
are that .gif supports only a 256 colour palette; therefore
detailed pictures and photo-realistic images may lose colours
and/or formation. Finally the last disadvantage is that lossless
compression is limited and inferior to other formats.
7. .Pdf
• Portable Document Format this format uses both raster and
vector graphics this means it uses pixels and mathematical
equations. Advantages of using this type of file format is that
it is able to be opened on any software. They also have small
file sizes which makes them easier to share and once the file
has been saved using this file type it cannot be manipulated
which means your work will be safe. disadvantages of this file
format is that if you check for it to be reviewed by someone
they wont be able to help you make improvements. An
example is Exam boards would be the most likely to use this
file format as you can save big files in a small file size and the
work is also protected
