2. Raster Graphics
• Give a definition of Raster Graphics
• Raster graphics are made up of bitmaps, bitmaps are created by multiple pixels each pixel containing the information and
content for that specific part of the image
3. Vector Graphics
• Give a definition of Vector Graphics
• Vector graphics are made up of multiple vectors, vectors have both a start and end point with many
angles and curves between them, this information can make any shape, due to this vectors can be resized
to match their use, for example , a logo can be used for a small business card but also has the ability to be
resized to a billboard
5. JPEG
Stands For Joint Photographic Experts Group
Used For/Example A JPEG is used for photographs and web
photo content
Advantage Advantages of using this format is they are
idea as a publishing format to send across
the internet and for use as such things as
storing photos or use as a desktop
background due to the high quality
Disadvantage Quality can be lost due to multiple edits
6. TIFF
Stands For Tagged Image File Format
Used For/Example This format is used by graphic designers to
create books and magazines in adobe in-
design
Advantage An advantage of this format is that you
can use the feature of lossless
compression meaning that you do not
loose any quality when you compress the
file
Disadvantage A possible disadvantage is that the files
are very large and most websites do not
offer the feature to upload in this format
7. GIF
Stands For Graphics interchange Format
Used For/Example The main use of this format is short
animations common on the internet
Advantage This format is a small file size therefore in
can be uploaded to the internet with
minimum quality loss
Disadvantage A possible disadvantage of this format is
that it only has a small colour pallet of 256
colours meaning it can sometimes look
poor due to blocky clumps of colour
8. BMP
Stands For Bitmap Image File
Used For/Example A BMP file is used to store colour data for
each pixel in an image without the use of
compression an example would be a
20x20 grid would contain 200 pixels of
colour, they are normally used for
printable media
Advantage An advantage of this format is that is can
be high quality if unaltered
Disadvantage A possible disadvantage to this is that
Bmp’s have a large file size
10. PSD
Stands For Photoshop Document
Used For/Example This is format that Photoshop mainly saves
data in, for non export
Advantage An advantage of this is that you can return
to your project as many times as you wish
with no loss of quality and all your images
are still in the same place you left them
*layers, effects etc…
Disadvantage This file is mainly only recognised by
Photoshop and a couple of other image
manipulation programs, therefore if you
were a designer sending to a client you
would have to change the format to match
what they can view
11. AI
Stands For Adobe Illustrator Artwork
Used For/Example One of the main uses of this format is logo
creation, so this software is mainly used
by graphic designers
Advantage This format is beheld as the most
advanced vector format available and it
has a wider compatibility for a native
vector format
Disadvantage Newer versions of this file can contain
compatibility issues so they may not
behave as a non standard format
12. FLA
Stands For Flash Files
Used For/Example This format is used to create animations
and certain games
Advantage The advantage of using this format is that
you can have a high quality video with a
small file size and contain both sound and
video
Disadvantage You cannot publish your project to the
web in this format it is required to use the
export option and make it an .swf file to
achieve this
13. WMF
Stands For Windows Metafile
Used For/Example The main use for this file is for logos
Advantage This file type is a vector so it can be scaled
big and small and the vectors have no loss
in definition, these files can contain parts
of both vector and bitmap images
Disadvantage Very few programs offer support for this
file, there are a lot of other formats that
are more accessible
15. Compression
Definition A file can be reduced by compression to
save space, they're two main types of
photo compression there is lossy
compression this is where the file size is
minimised by changing the amount of data
that is saved, and lossless that compresses
files without the loss of data
Advantage This helps to minimise the file size, and
save space when saving files, this is
especially useful if you're trying to email
an idea to a client
Disadvantage The problem with lossy compression is
that images can become pixelated and
have a large loss of quality when you're
uncompressed the file, this is why it is not
good for delivering images to a client
16. Image Capture
Method Scanner
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
A physical piece of paper is placed on the
scanner glass and then scans it in and
converts it to a useable format with most
scanners this is usually a jpeg file
Method Camera
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
A camera is used to take an image from
the real world and convert it into a range
of pixels creating a photo this can later be
transferred to a computer for editing
usually in a jpeg format
Method Graphics Tablet
How is it used for image capture of
graphics
A graphics tablet allows a designer to draw
straight into the digital world, this is
commonly used in AI for drawings and
logos and flash for animations or games
17. Optimising
Why would you optimise? You would use optimising to upload a
large file to the internet
How can you optimise? You can optimise in Photoshop by
changing the bit depth or the overall
image size
Advantage to optimising An advantage of this is you can have faster
upload and download speeds
Disadvantage to optimising The disadvantage of this is that you loose
a substantial amount of quality depending
on how far you optimise
19. File Size
What could affect a Working Scale
(Photoshop) document file size?
Photoshop files become larger depending
how many layer or shape are in the
document, large pixel ratio can also lead
to a large file size
How could you reduce the file size of a
Working Scale document without
affecting quality?
To reduce the size of this type of
document you can simply just change the
file type
What is an advantage of scaling up
images before exporting?
The advantage of this is it allows for easy
resizing after exporting for less quality loss
What is a disadvantage of scaling up
images before exporting?
This can lead to having a large file size and
it makes it harder to send to a client
20. File Naming Conventions
What naming conventions could you use
when creating your video game assets?
It’s easier and more organised to not use
the default naming of untitled and give
objects or images names that refer to
what they are such as “Phone (1)”
Why is it a good idea to accurately name
your assets?
If items are not named correctly you can
end up with messy files making it more of
a task to find documents you are looking
for
21. Asset Management
Why would you use folders when storing
your assets?
Folders further help to organise items in
your project such as “house images” this
helps to section different parts of your
project
What folders would you create and what
would you save within them
I would start with my main folder and
then create a group of subfolders from
that including all the necessary thing I
require to create my game such as my
research to my final product
