The Fetal Pig And Human Anatomy
Hypothesis I believe if we observe a fetal pig specimen, it will serve as a very helpful comparative
tool in learning human anatomy because much of the fetal pig's organ systems are very similar in
anatomy and physiology to that of the human, as the pig and human are both mammals. From the
fetal pig, we can gain an understanding of organ size, the relation between organ systems and how
they function together as a whole.
Introduction Pigs are one of the most similar animals to humans, and can be analyzed to learn about
the organ systems of the body. Both pigs and humans are mammals, omnivores, furless and
featherless, and their fetuses receive nutrients from their mothers through the umbilical cord as they
develop (Field). These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the fetal pig, the heart was enclosed in a pericardial cavity, with the right and left lungs on each
side of it (Freeman, et. al). The mediastinum, which includes the pericardium, the esophagus, the
trachea, and other structures separates the thoracic cavity into right and left sides (Field, pg. 11). The
muscular diaphragm separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal pelvic cavity, where the
digestive and urinary systems are located (Field p. 11). As we worked through the dissection we
were able to observe each organ system individually and look deeper into all of the anatomical
structures that play a role in its function.
The purpose of the dissection was to develop a deeper understanding of how the anatomy and
physiology of organ systems are influenced by each other. The dissection allows us to take the
knowledge we've learned from the fetal pig and to apply it in the context of the human body, as a
valuable learning experience.
Materials and Procedures
To observe the anatomy and physiology of the fetal pig through dissection, the procedures for Labs
22–26 of the Biology 1107 Principles of Biology Laboratory Manual, 2017 were followed directly.

Anatomy Reflection
What went wrong
As with other PA faculties, you may be aware of the general complaints made by the first year PA
students about the Anatomy course. I do know my classmates were affected different; however,
these were my own personal challenges with the Anatomy course:
Disorganization of course material o Class reading assignments did not match Lecture o Lecture
PowerPoints were not provided despite request from several students. It was usually provided a
couple of days before the test. This shortened the time to study, memorize and focus on the
necessary anatomical structures.
Lack of guidance on how to study the information presented
– As recommended during the PA orientation, I read the assigned readings for my courses; however,
for anatomy, this exercise quickly became futile only because it did not contribute to helping to
understand lectures provided in class. With voluminous reading assignments, many times, the
anatomy lecture focused little or none from the information in the textbook. Lectures mostly
presented anatomical structures and so focus on images were paramount. Therefore, the reading did
little to help understand lecture material if one is not familiar enough with the anatomical structures.
While this was the case, the PowerPoints with the anatomical structures were not provided.
Insufficient & consistent guidance in the Anatomy Cadaver lab
– Initially there was no tutoring and/or review sessions for the lab. Many of us were confused and

Anatomy Personal Statement
In my school, I have been given the option to learn anatomy this year. Before this class, I was not
sure about what I would like to do in the future. My father has been a rheumatology nurse for many
years now and continues to be one today. He has given me background information and advice if I
ever considered going into nursing for my future. So, with my father as a nurse, I have always
admired the medical industry. When I found out anatomy was an option to take for my senior year, I
was ecstatic. In my 11 years of private school, I never had the option to learn more about the human
body. I have only been given the option to learn about environmental sciences. I have always hated
science in school, in fact, it used to be my worst subject. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

My mother brought me up in an environment where I could express my feelings in artistic ways. I
remember being a child and seeing her sketch or paint nature. Nature was her favorite thing to look
at and recreate in her own way. She would view nature and draw it according to how she felt that
day. For example, red mountains when she was angry or a sunny sky when she was happy. Her style
of art helped influence my style of art. She was born with an artistic hand while mine needed – and
still needs – a little more practice. She knew this yet, she never let me attend any art classes to
improve. She taught me that I could improve myself and not with anyone to help me. So, it was not
until sophomore year of high school when I took an art class. I found that it was an option and told
my mother immediately. She knew how much I like expressing my feelings through art so she
agreed I take it. In that class, I sketched, sculpted, and painted. I enjoyed that class so much that I
decided to take advanced art the next year. In that class, all the students had more developed artistic
skills than I did, so I realized that painting was not my forte even though I enjoy it the most. I love
to express myself through art so I began talking to my teacher and asked her what other things I
could do to express myself. I mentioned to her my secret passion for photography. I love

Anatomy And Physiology During The Hellenistic Period
Anatomy is to physiology, as geography is to history; it describes the theatre of events. Medical
culture that emphasized the study of anatomy through human vivisection peaked in Alexandria in
the 3rd century BC, with Herophilus and Erasistratus– the two primary anatomists of the 3rd
century– spearheading this movement. Alexandria was the ideal place to study anatomy and
physiology during the Hellenistic period since the research was not tied down by civil laws, taboos,
or moralism that prevailed on the Greek mainland. Although the practice of human vivisection was
decreed by the priesthood throughout the rest of Egypt and Athens, it was not so in this well–
insulated center of learning.
Herophilus and Erasistratus, owing to their freedom to perform experiments and autopsies on living
human cadavers, made phenomenal anatomical discoveries that significantly advanced the
understanding of the human body. Herophilus developed the theory of the diagnostic value of the
pulse and produced an elaborate classification of the different types of pulse according to criteria
such as speed, rhythm, intensity, and evenness. He established that the brain was the center of the
nervous system, not the heart. His work on the eye, stated to be accurate even in modern medicine,
revealed the existence of the optic nerve, the vitreous humor, and retina. Erasistratus emphasized the
role of mechanical processes in digestion, elaborately describing the movement and breakdown of

Greys Anatomy Characters
Greys Anatomy is a fiction show surrounding the professional and personal lives of a group of
surgeons at Seattle Grace–Mercy West (SGMW) hospital in Seattle, Washington. The main character
in show is Dr. Meredith Grey, who is a surgical resident at the hospital. Meredith was hired by Dr.
Richard Webber, an older surgeon who was the Chief of Surgery. Hired in the same year as Meredith
was Alex Karev and Cristina Yang; Cristina Yang is Meredith's best friend and desires to specialize
in Cardiothoracic surgery and currently trains under Dr. Teddy Altman, who has a past friendship
with Christina's husband, Dr. Owen Hunt, who is the current Chief of Surgery at SGMW. Teddy
Altman also just recently lost her husband, Henry, in a surgery performed by Cristina. Meredith

Cristina is the kind of person who never skipped classes in high school or college, she is strong–

at any time in her life. Owen and Cristina are married but have had some difficulties due to
difference in lifestyle choices and personality differences. When Cristina got pregnant recently, she
had an abortion. Owen supported her, but not her decision and still holds resentments towards her
for this. This scene was a representation of a struggle with another, a conflict with someone else .
There were things that went well with communication and things that didn't. They both listened to
non–verbal cues, including tone, volume and body language to gauge the emotions of one another,
which is good. They didn't respond in an empathic manner, but rather responded with the same
perceived emotion. Non–verbal cues are behaviors that signal or convey meaning to others without

Historical Anatomy And Scientific Anatomy
The history of anatomical illustration attracts the interest of both medical and art historians. Ludwig
Choulant published one of the earliest catalogues of anatomical illustrations in 1852. The
Geschichte und Bibliographie der Anatomischen Abbildung continued to attract attention as
Mortimer Frank revised and translated the catalogue in 1920 and in 1945 an expanded version was
published which remains a useful resource of early anatomical illustration. The 1852 edition
included 43 woodcuts and three chromolithographs to illustrate the entries which range from the
earliest Arabic manuscript illuminations to anatomical atlases published in Choulant's time.
Choulant understands the history of anatomic illustration to allow for an easy distinction between
artistic and scientific anatomy. Artistic anatomy according to Choulant idealises anatomical beauty
and overlooks particulars for the sake of perfection. Scientific anatomy and illustration has a
didactic purpose, while artistic anatomy is not intended to instruct anyone with the exception of
other artists. Without doubt, scientific anatomy must also generalise in order to teach anatomy,
though it would be better at displaying the functions and relative positions of organs than artistic
anatomy, where the primary concern lies in musculature. Choulant dedicates a large section of his
study not the social history of medical illustration, which is also included, but to specific examples
from artists' books and medical textbooks.

Anatomy And Physiology Essay
How we came to know what we know now about anatomy and physiology has always been a great
curiosity of anyone interested in the medical field. Knowing the history can lead to even more
discoveries in the future. When you think of anatomy you imagine something like this picture below.
But here is where it all began....
The beginning of anatomy and physiology, ironically, began with a curiosity in biology. The first
man to create an important contribution to biology was Alcmaeon, in the 5th century, BC. He was
the first scientist to have worked with dissection. His focus was in trying to find out from where and
how human intelligence came to be. His research never intended to be anatomical. He merely
stumbled upon anatomical research. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is famous for his dissection of apes and pigs, it is said he never once dissected a human cadaver.
He believed apes were anatomically identical to humans. His work was never questioned until 100's
of years later when, Vesalius, a Renaissance anatomist showed people the difference between apes
and humans. He discovered more than 200 differences. In 1540, Vesalius showed exactly what
Galen was wrong about. Galen's work was much respected regardless. He got a lot right, but also a
fair amount wrong . For example, he stated that apes had hearts with 3 ventricles, as did humans.
During the Renaissance era, slicing open human cadavers was approved by many people, but
unfortunately a lot of professors bypassed the idea. Vesalius was a very dedicated man. He did
dissect criminals, but he also managed to snatch the bodies himself. Based on his research, Vesalius
created a very detailed book called De Humani Corporis Fabrica.(The Structure of the Human
Body). This was the most famous anatomy book of that era.
Just like Galen, Hippocrates never once dissected a human cadaver. He stated that "dissection was
unpleasant if not cruel," as stated on page 53 of the book Stiff by Mary Roach. Hippocrates believed
tendons to be nerves and believed the brain was a mucous secreting gland. Hippocrates was dubbed
the Father of Medicine.
In 1489 to 1515, Leonardo da Vinci, began to illustrate anatomical features. He is ordered to stop
dissecting in 1515 by

Anatomy And Physiology And Describe Their Subdivisions
1) Define anatomy and physiology and describe their subdivisions.
– Anatomy studies the structure of body parts and their relationships to one another. Body structures
can be seen, felt, and examined closely.
– Gross, or macroscopic, anatomy: Study of large body structures visible to the naked eye, such as
the heart, lungs and kidneys.
– Regional anatomy, all the structures (muscles, bones, blood vessels, nerves, etc.) in a particular
region of the body, such as the abdomen or leg, are examined at the same time. – Systemic
anatomy– Body structure is studied system by system. When studying the cardiovascular system,
you would examine the heart and the blood vessels of the entire body. – Surface anatomy– Study of
internal structures as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, bones can support and protect body organs because they contain hard mineral deposits.
Blood flows in one direction through heart because heart has valves that prevent backflow.
3) Name the different levels of structural organization that make up the human body, and explain
their relationships.
1. Chemical level– atoms combine to form molecules.
2. Cellular level– molecules, in turn, associate in specific ways to form organelles, basic
components of the microscopic cells. Cells are smallest units of living things.
3. Tissue level– Tissue are groups of similar cells that have a common function. The four basic
tissue types:
– Epithelium– covers body surfaces and lines its cavities.
– Muscle provides movement.
– Connective tissue supports and protects body organs.
– Nervous tissue provides a means of rapid internal communication by transmitting electrical
impulses.
4. Organ level– Organs are made up of different types of tissues. Organ is a discrete structure
composed of at least two tissue types that performs a specific function for the body.
5. Organ system level– Organs that work together to accomplish a common purpose make up an
organ system.
6. Organismal level represents the sum total of all structural levels working together to keep us
alive. Contains organism, the living human being.
4) List the 11 organ systems of the body, identify their components, and briefly explain the major
functions of each

Greys Anatomy Analysis
As society undergoes a progressive change in the media and sexuality sector, there has been an
increase in the "queering" of characters across all media platforms, most specifically film and
television. Furthermore, in order to better understand the changes that have been ongoing in recent
years, I looked at ABC Studio Production's hit drama series Grey's Anatomy. Shonda Rhimes
created the Golden Globe winning series, which first aired in March of 2005 and is still running
today. In addition to creating the show, Rhimes serves as an executive producer along with Betsy
Beers, Mark Gordon, Tony Phelan, Joan Rater and Rob Corn. Further, the reason I selected this
example was because I am a dedicated fan of the show and also because the show has ... Show more

show brought awareness to the topic and likely aided in many peoples acceptance of same–sex
relationships. All in all, Callie Torres is a poster image of what it is for the media to "queer" a

Grey's Anatomy: Is it helpful?
The medical field is the structure that holds the health of the people together. Everyone expects the
best care and treatment from a skilled physician and nursing staff. Thus, students in the nursing
program and obtaining the basics for the program are needing to learn how to use correct leadership
skills, how to rightfully connect them with patients, and how to solve problems at hand. Television
shows like Grey's Anatomy, House, and Scrubs are portrayed as medical dramas that make you feel,
connect with patients, and get caught up in the drama. Doctors and critics analyze these shows
finding the good and bad aspects of watching episodes for learning experience. My paper will
mainly focus on the television series, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Writers and producers knew from there on out they had to carry on a defining medical drama with
the medicine as the main backbone. Ingrid Katz and Alexi Wright wrote a descriptive journal article
over the problems seen in episodes of Grey's Anatomy. Of course they found the minor problems
with the drama, confrontations, and authority. There were a few more problematic scenes included
in the series. Katz and Wright go on to explain the true problems such as, "Two of the characters
experiment on a patient, performing an illegal autopsy against a family's wishes. On the show, the
characters are forgiven, instead of arrested, because they discover the patient had a rare genetic
disease (which Oh blithely mispronounces)"(2). Television shows should explain what can and can't
be done in the medical field along with the consequence that follow. Throughout my searching I
found another problematic scene from season eleven. This episode leaked personal information
pertaining to a resident and a checkup she had. The information made its way through the hospital
and made her reputation feel ruined. AS a result the nurse who told a private matter was sent home
for two weeks. ("Bend & Break") With many critics explaining how the show is used in the medical
field, I would suggest that the writers of Grey's Anatomy add more learning experiences in each
show and not focus on outrageous

Anatomy is wonderful, isn't it? It is the embodiment of well...our bodies. I guess the best place to
start would be skin. The only organ we see on a daily basis without being grossed out.
Your skin has three layers: the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous fat. I feel wonderful knowing
that part of my skin is literally fat, don't you?
The epidermis is the first layer of your skin and the only layer you actually see when you're walking
down the street. If you're a surgeon, you probably see the dermis and subcutaneous fat as well, but
for now, we are just covering the epidermis.
The function of the epidermis is to form brand–spanking new skin cells. How very nice of it. Once
these new cells are completely developed they made their way to the

Grey's Anatomy Observation
Grey's Anatomy is a drama medical show that has been airing on TV since 2005. The show is based
on the surgical unit of Seattle Grace Hospital. Throughout the show, we have seen characters evolve
from interns to residents to fellows and to attendings and maybe if the character is lucky, they
become head of a surgical department. Characters also develop multiple relationships with their
colleagues. Some of these relationships are appropriate for the work setting like friendships while
some are inappropriate like having a romantic relationship with a colleague. Although I love Grey's
Anatomy and could binge watch it all the time, I believe that the sexual encounters characters have
at the hospital are unrealistic. Grey's Anatomy is a wonderful ... Show more content on

Lower ranked characters, like interns, are having romantic relationships with superior characters
such as attendings. We see this in the very first episode of the show. Meredith Grey, an intern, sleeps
with her boss so to speak, Derek Shepard, an attending. However, they hook up before knowing that
either of them work at the same hospital. In real life people would see this as sleeping with the boss
to gain special treatment such as getting to assist in more surgeries and better their education. Later
in the season, other interns find out that Meredith and Derek have had sexual encounters and they do
believe that she does it so she can assist on more surgeries. During multiple episodes characters
would hook up in the on–call rooms. This is unrealistic because on–call rooms are for people who
need to sleep over in case they are needed for an emergency. They are also used for people who are
working a double shift and would like to take a nap on one of their breaks. Characters in the show
always seem to find some free time to hook up in the on–call rooms. Again, this is unrealistic
because doctors are always busy, especially surgeons. It is unlikely that two surgeons that like each
other are going to have a bit of free time at the same time. It is for these reasons why the sexual

Human Anatomy And The Physiology Of The Body At The...
Born into a family of engineers and accountants, a career in medicine did not immediately strike me
as the obvious choice until high school. Being a recreational gymnast for most of my life, I have
always been fascinated with human anatomy. However, I discovered my interest in science after
taking an advanced biology class with a dissection component which made me awestruck,
appreciate the anatomy and made me want to study the physiology of the body at the molecular
scale. Dissections demanded a precision which enticed the artist in me. While still in high school in
India, I discovered that I exceptionally enjoyed being with people and making them feel better in
any capacity whether it was volunteering with blood drives or a school for deaf and speech impaired
children. It struck me that there was a vast need for people to be in every corner of the earth helped
whether they were ill, homeless, or depressed and lonely.
I was intrigued by medicine towards the end of high school and the desire to become a physician
was confirmed in freshman year of college. When I moved to Canada for undergraduate school, I
furthered my interest in science by tutoring, as I enjoyed educating people and going on research
laboratory rotations for a couple of weeks. A supervisor at one of the labs mentioned that my skill
set would be much better suited for medicine than for bench science because she felt I was not able
to fully emerge on account of me being unable to use some of the skills I

Grey's Anatomy, By Shonda Rhimes
Grey's Anatomy, created by Shonda Rhimes (first airing in 2005), is a television show that focuses
not only on the journey of the protagonist, Meredith Grey, but also follows the other characters in
their difficult path of becoming doctors in the surgical field ("About Grey's Anatomy, n.d.). The
television series takes place in a medical center formerly known as Seattle Grace Hospital, but over
the course of the show is later changed to Seattle Grace–Mercy West Hospital (due to a merge) and
then Grey–Sloan Memorial Hospital ("About Grey's Anatomy", n.d.). Grey's Anatomy not only
demonstrates the struggle of balancing a personal life as well a professional one among the cast, but
also illustrates the difficult decisions and situations that they are faced with as medical practitioners.
Through the difficult and life changing circumstances that the aspiring doctors overcome, many
examples of Anatomy can be seen as a key factor integrated within the series. The venue, Grey–
Sloan Memorial Hospital, incorporates many examples of Anatomy throughout the different cases as
well as the surgeons themselves. For instance, each surgeon specializes in the different organ
systems of the body; Cardiothoracic surgeon (Cristina Yang), Trauma surgeon (Owen Hunt),
Pediatric surgeon (Arizona Robbins), Neurosurgeon (Derek Shepherd), Plastic surgeon (Mark

still on going. When the show first premiered it was a mid season replacement on ABC and became
one of the overall top ten shows in the United States. With the relationship drama, workplace drama,
and the never ending guessing game of what will happen next, Grey's Anatomy is definitely a TV
series I would recommend.
The show focuses on Meredith Grey whose mother is a famous general surgeon. Meredith is
following in her mothers footsteps by going into the residency program as an intern at Seattle Grace

movement where medical schools are "increasingly engage their students in more independent
learning of anatomy through interactive computer technology" (Saxena, 2008). At the University of
California–San Francisco School of Medicine, students were provided video dissections of
upcoming labs that followed scripted instructions adapted from anatomy syllabi and "were
specifically edited to review the important steps of the dissection procedure, and to identify the key
anatomic structures" (Saxena, 2008). This resource allowed students to prepare for the upcoming
laboratory leading to their maximizing of dissection hours and a 3.4%

What I Learned In Anatomy Class
My hand was sprinting across the page with charcoal in palm, and the finish line of my sketch was
in sight. The image of a model's face was quickly appearing, and the proportions of her eyes–to–
nose and ear–to–mouth were just right. Proportions of the human face were something I learned in
art class, whereas the details in her eyes were something I learned in anatomy class.
I never knew how much I loved science until my love for art developed. As a child, I grew up in a
home where my parents encouraged me to flourish creatively. While we lived in Europe, I thrived
on new adventures as they took me to museums, cathedrals, and castles throughout several
countries. The sculptures and paintings of people always amazed me. My small brain could ... Show

During my time there, I shadowed a pediatric doctor. While I was asking him questions, he was
called into an emergency surgery, and I was unfortunately not old enough to watch according to the
hospital restrictions. So as I was waiting around, a PA swooped me up and let me shadow her
instead. I was embarrassed to admit to her that I was not aware of a PA's responsibilities to the
hospital. Throughout the rest of the day, I followed the PA into patient rooms and recovery rooms. I
was able to observe how the PA interacted with patients with such a reassuring and caring attitude
that I had not seen with the previous physician I had met. I not only respected her compassionate
personality, but I related to it.
My senior year, I desired to see more of what life was like as a PA. Thankfully, I was finally within
the age requirement to stand in on surgeries. That day I saw the PA make the first cut and suture the
last stitch. Both were made with such precision and perfection. It hit me; the PA was an artist just
like Rubens, Giorgione, and Michelangelo. The sutures were just as beautiful as the paintings in all

1. Identify a related pair of medical, anatomical, or physiology terms that has given you difficulty.
The anatomical terms that have always given me problems are the name of the parts of the bone in
legs and arms: diaphysis, epiphysis, and metaphysis.
2. Explain the system you use to distinguish them in your mind. Include references to any texts or
tools used.
Since I noticed that I have to go back to my references to be able to identify the parts of the bone, I
created a "formula." I used the first letter of the name of the part of the bone with a number in front
to remember that there are two parts with the same name: 2E2M1D that stands for epiphysis x 2,

character, Meredith Grey, is young, white female with "daddy issues". The protagonist falls in love
with a married man and struggles to deal with her absent parents. Every show needs someone to
cheer on and hoping that eventually things will work out, and Meredith Grey is this show's
someone. Then there's Christina Yang, the ambitious and competitive Asian. She is made out to be

Representation of race and gender is effortlessly shown throughout the American medical drama
series, Grey's Anatomy. It was released on ABC television in 2005 and continued to air until 2016. It
narrates five medical students in Seattle, Washington's hospital in which they all progress through
the seasons to become a doctor. They also goas well through drama and difficult situations, while
trying to keep their personal love lives maintained. "One of the best things in Grey's Anatomy is that
none of the characters are perfect; they all have glaring imperfections" (Wilson, 2009, p.2). Grey's

For instance, the opening scene of the episode shows Derek and Meredith, which are both white
characters. However, the series also tends to represent different races equally, not just heavily
focusing on the white race. The African American character that holds a major role in the series is
Richard Webber, the chief of surgery. During the first episode, he is introduced touring his fellow
interns around the surgical room, while discussing their roles. Another African American character
that is introduced after is Miranda Bailey, with the role of a female superior doctor who speaks in a
formal and assured manner nicknamed as 'the Nazi' in the hospital because of the way she treats her
interns. For example, she is harsh to everyone in the episode which makes the interns come to
respect her. "Miranda Bailey offers one of the more intriguing examples of how blackness is figured
in a text such as Grey's Anatomy as a matter of personal and communication style, rather than
political and social differences" (Havens, 2013, p. 125). Racial stereotypes are presented in this
series differently, as African Americans are given major roles. This is an advantage towards
destroying the racial stereotype of the audience believing only white characters are intended to main
roles. The series also displays an Asian character, Christina Yang. She is introduced in the first

Anatomy And Physiology Study Guide
1. Distinguish between anatomy and physiology
Anatomy is the study of the structure and shape for the body and its parts and their relationship to
one another. Anatomy is most commonly related to gross anatomical studies because in these studies
preserved animals and their organs are dissected and examined. And microscopic anatomy is the
study of body structures that can only be seen through a microscope. Physiology is the study of how
the body and its parts work or function. Physiology is similar to anatomy in a way that they have
many subdivisions. Physiology has; neurophysiology which explain the function of the nervous
system. It also has cardiac physiology which is the study of the heart. Anatomy and Physiology are

The lights in the ER blink as the storm rages on outside. I snap back from the sadness of the weather

lives, but we didn't always have this information. Anatomy has a history, however, how did it all
begin, and who brought the knowledge of human anatomy to us. To understand where it all began
we have to journey back to 300 BC in the ancient city of Alexandria where we meet Herophilus. For
him, it wasn't easy to study human anatomy because there was a ban on dissections in Alexandria.
However once that ban was lifted Herophilus was the first person in Greece to publicly dissect both
human cadavers and animals. Herophilus was then deemed the father of anatomy and with more
studying on the brain he learned that it was the center of the nervous system. Before his time though
there was the father of medicine or Hippocrates. Hippocrates was one of the greatest physicians of
his time, and also brought the world of anatomy the Hippocratic oath. Now back to today we've
advanced further in the knowledge of anatomy and

Anatomy and Physiology is the study of the human body. Anatomy is the study of the internal and
external structure of body parts. Physiology is the study of the function of those body parts. In an
anatomy and physiology course you will examine the body parts and the way that these body parts
function together to keep us alive. The definition of homeostasis is the means or ability to keep the
body stable in order to compensate for environmental changes. A really good example of
homeostasis is the body keeping the average temperature of 98.6 degrees. Homeostasis is important
because cells rely on the body to live and operate. Homeostasis keeps the body environment under

There are positive feedback mechanisms and negative feedback mechanisms. Positive feedback is a
closed system that occurs in a feedback loop and the response of the system relies on the feedback
system to function. A good example of this would be a blood clot. When a vessel is harmed,
platelets begin to stick to the harmed site and discharge chemicals that pull in more platelets. The
platelets keep on heaping up and discharge chemicals until a coagulation is formed and you now
have a blood clot. Negative feedback is a response that causes a decline in its function. It is a
reaction to some kind of stimulus. It usually causes the output of a system to lessen which in turn
tends to stabilize the system. The skin protects underlying tissues and organs, excretes salts, water,
and organic wastes. It also regulates your body temperature. The hair protects your scalp from UV
rays, cushions blows to the head, and insulates the skull. Nails protect the sensitive tips of your
fingers and your toes. Exocrine glands keep the skin oily, produce sweat, and secrete earwax to keep
the ear from drying out. Ensure the body's inner living tissues and

The sheer amount of terminology and conceptual knowledge required for anatomy and physiology
can be overwhelming for students. Educational games are one approach to reinforce concepts. In
this activity, students work in teams to review anatomy and physiology concepts by creating arrays
of descriptive tiles to define a term. Once guessed, students use their spatial knowledge to locate the
structure or process within the body. The game challenges students to think about course vocabulary
in a different way and to pool their knowledge to get their classmates to guess the words. Pre–/post–
test data reveal that students achieve statistically significant learning gains after playing the game,
and a survey of student perceptions demonstrates that the game is helpful for learning vocabulary as
well as fun to play. The game is easily adaptable for a variety of courses.
Introduction
Anatomy and Physiology courses are dense with terminology. Students struggle learning the
vocabulary in addition to linking structure and function, explaining concepts, and making broader
connections. To help facilitate understanding, instructors often turn to classroom activities that
promote active learning. (Michael 2006, Lujan 2006, Jensen 2015)
Active learning strategies are diverse, but most focus on asking students to reflect on what they
know and apply it through an activity. The rise of flipped and active–learning classrooms has
resulted in the development of a vast collection of tools to

The Anatomy of Grey When times get tough and the only way to survive is to keep fighting, there
are two choices: either you sink or you swim. At least that's the mentality that belongs to the young,
soon–to–be medical doctors in the 2005 TV series Grey's Anatomy. Already having 8 seasons of
surgical miracles, everlasting camaraderies, problematic love triangles, and life–threatening
decisions, Grey's Anatomy portrays a "dramedy" which focuses on a highly intellectual group of
interns, residents, and attendings that strive to one–up each other in order to rank as the best, save
the lives of patients, and keep the reputation of Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital. Nonetheless,

Izzie Stevens follows her instincts and cuts Denny Duquette's (a patient she fell in love with) LVAD
wire with intent to move him up the heart donor list. At first with his condition, Denny is moved up
the list; however, his condition quickly begins to worsen which causes him to die. Ultimately
regretting what she had done, Izzie blames herself for what had happened to the man she loved. In
addition, another example representing that mistakes are a part of life is shown when Dr. Derek
Shepard made an honest mistake in surgery resulting in the death of a man's wife. In the episode
"An Honest Mistake" the husband snaps at Derek quoting, "Stop saying you're sorry, you killed her,
you're a murderer..." Being accused for an accidental mistake, Derek ultimately decides to take a
leave from being a doctor because he discovers that the number of the patients he's saved was
significantly lower than the lives he killed unintentionally. Grey's Anatomy displays that no matter
how hard we try to avoid them, mistakes are simply just a part of life. "We have to make our own
mistakes. We have to learn our own lessons. We have to sweep today's possibility under tomorrow's
rug until we can't anymore. Until we finally understand for ourselves what Benjamin Franklin
meant. That knowing is better than wondering... And that even the biggest failure, even the worst

Grey's Anatomy Critique
The ABC television drama "Grey's Anatomy" written by Shonda Rhimes and produced by Ann
Kindberg, is a popular medical drama about a group of surgeons who work at Grey Sloan Memorial
Hospital in Seattle, Washington. The show focuses mostly around the main character, Meredith
Grey, who is at first is a surgical resident and soon becomes a general surgeon, her background
story, relationships with others, and her life as a surgeon. The storyline, big–time surgeries/medical
cases, intense scenes, and romantic chemistry between the characters make "Grey's Anatomy" a
successful medical show. I first started watching "Grey's Anatomy" on a gloomy Saturday morning
during my freshman year of high school. I was bored so I decided to browse for new shows to watch
and came across "Grey's Anatomy". At first, I was a bit skeptical of the show because I thought it
would a typical medical show where the doctors were very serious, and there would not be a story
line, just surgeries. After the first episode, I realized I was wrong, the show humorous and addicting.

I do not like how the writers and producers make the life of a doctor seem easy and you do not
really have to work hard to become a surgeon. The writers make the profession of a doctor seem
easy and stress less. Which in reality is not true at all, it is hard to become a doctor and you need to
be focused and be dedicated to the job to become successful. "Grey's Anatomy" focuses a lot on big
cases or cases where solutions are close to impossible and the surgeons pull a miracle and come up
with a solution. One other thing is that the writer, Shonda Rhimes kill off a lot of the characters. The
amount of death that happens in "Grey's Anatomy" is insane. I understand it's a medical show and in
an actual medical setting the number of deaths are similar, but the doctors do not need to die. Most
of the deaths are occurred by motor vehicle

The Fetal Pig And Human Anatomy

  • 1. The Fetal Pig And Human Anatomy Hypothesis I believe if we observe a fetal pig specimen, it will serve as a very helpful comparative tool in learning human anatomy because much of the fetal pig's organ systems are very similar in anatomy and physiology to that of the human, as the pig and human are both mammals. From the fetal pig, we can gain an understanding of organ size, the relation between organ systems and how they function together as a whole. Introduction Pigs are one of the most similar animals to humans, and can be analyzed to learn about the organ systems of the body. Both pigs and humans are mammals, omnivores, furless and featherless, and their fetuses receive nutrients from their mothers through the umbilical cord as they develop (Field). These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the fetal pig, the heart was enclosed in a pericardial cavity, with the right and left lungs on each side of it (Freeman, et. al). The mediastinum, which includes the pericardium, the esophagus, the trachea, and other structures separates the thoracic cavity into right and left sides (Field, pg. 11). The muscular diaphragm separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal pelvic cavity, where the digestive and urinary systems are located (Field p. 11). As we worked through the dissection we were able to observe each organ system individually and look deeper into all of the anatomical structures that play a role in its function. The purpose of the dissection was to develop a deeper understanding of how the anatomy and physiology of organ systems are influenced by each other. The dissection allows us to take the knowledge we've learned from the fetal pig and to apply it in the context of the human body, as a valuable learning experience. Materials and Procedures To observe the anatomy and physiology of the fetal pig through dissection, the procedures for Labs 22–26 of the Biology 1107 Principles of Biology Laboratory Manual, 2017 were followed directly. This includes all materials and steps included (Lombard, Terry, Malinoski, 2017, Pages ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Anatomy Reflection What went wrong As with other PA faculties, you may be aware of the general complaints made by the first year PA students about the Anatomy course. I do know my classmates were affected different; however, these were my own personal challenges with the Anatomy course: Disorganization of course material o Class reading assignments did not match Lecture o Lecture PowerPoints were not provided despite request from several students. It was usually provided a couple of days before the test. This shortened the time to study, memorize and focus on the necessary anatomical structures. Lack of guidance on how to study the information presented – As recommended during the PA orientation, I read the assigned readings for my courses; however, for anatomy, this exercise quickly became futile only because it did not contribute to helping to understand lectures provided in class. With voluminous reading assignments, many times, the anatomy lecture focused little or none from the information in the textbook. Lectures mostly presented anatomical structures and so focus on images were paramount. Therefore, the reading did little to help understand lecture material if one is not familiar enough with the anatomical structures. While this was the case, the PowerPoints with the anatomical structures were not provided. Insufficient & consistent guidance in the Anatomy Cadaver lab – Initially there was no tutoring and/or review sessions for the lab. Many of us were confused and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Anatomy Personal Statement In my school, I have been given the option to learn anatomy this year. Before this class, I was not sure about what I would like to do in the future. My father has been a rheumatology nurse for many years now and continues to be one today. He has given me background information and advice if I ever considered going into nursing for my future. So, with my father as a nurse, I have always admired the medical industry. When I found out anatomy was an option to take for my senior year, I was ecstatic. In my 11 years of private school, I never had the option to learn more about the human body. I have only been given the option to learn about environmental sciences. I have always hated science in school, in fact, it used to be my worst subject. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My mother brought me up in an environment where I could express my feelings in artistic ways. I remember being a child and seeing her sketch or paint nature. Nature was her favorite thing to look at and recreate in her own way. She would view nature and draw it according to how she felt that day. For example, red mountains when she was angry or a sunny sky when she was happy. Her style of art helped influence my style of art. She was born with an artistic hand while mine needed – and still needs – a little more practice. She knew this yet, she never let me attend any art classes to improve. She taught me that I could improve myself and not with anyone to help me. So, it was not until sophomore year of high school when I took an art class. I found that it was an option and told my mother immediately. She knew how much I like expressing my feelings through art so she agreed I take it. In that class, I sketched, sculpted, and painted. I enjoyed that class so much that I decided to take advanced art the next year. In that class, all the students had more developed artistic skills than I did, so I realized that painting was not my forte even though I enjoy it the most. I love to express myself through art so I began talking to my teacher and asked her what other things I could do to express myself. I mentioned to her my secret passion for photography. I love ... • 7. Anatomy And Physiology During The Hellenistic Period Anatomy is to physiology, as geography is to history; it describes the theatre of events. Medical culture that emphasized the study of anatomy through human vivisection peaked in Alexandria in the 3rd century BC, with Herophilus and Erasistratus– the two primary anatomists of the 3rd century– spearheading this movement. Alexandria was the ideal place to study anatomy and physiology during the Hellenistic period since the research was not tied down by civil laws, taboos, or moralism that prevailed on the Greek mainland. Although the practice of human vivisection was decreed by the priesthood throughout the rest of Egypt and Athens, it was not so in this well– insulated center of learning. Herophilus and Erasistratus, owing to their freedom to perform experiments and autopsies on living human cadavers, made phenomenal anatomical discoveries that significantly advanced the understanding of the human body. Herophilus developed the theory of the diagnostic value of the pulse and produced an elaborate classification of the different types of pulse according to criteria such as speed, rhythm, intensity, and evenness. He established that the brain was the center of the nervous system, not the heart. His work on the eye, stated to be accurate even in modern medicine, revealed the existence of the optic nerve, the vitreous humor, and retina. Greys Anatomy Characters Greys Anatomy is a fiction show surrounding the professional and personal lives of a group of surgeons at Seattle Grace–Mercy West (SGMW) hospital in Seattle, Washington. The main character in show is Dr. Meredith Grey, who is a surgical resident at the hospital. Meredith was hired by Dr. Richard Webber, an older surgeon who was the Chief of Surgery. Hired in the same year as Meredith was Alex Karev and Cristina Yang; Cristina Yang is Meredith's best friend and desires to specialize in Cardiothoracic surgery and currently trains under Dr. Teddy Altman, who has a past friendship with Christina's husband, Dr. Owen Hunt, who is the current Chief of Surgery at SGMW. • 13. Historical Anatomy And Scientific Anatomy The history of anatomical illustration attracts the interest of both medical and art historians. Ludwig Choulant published one of the earliest catalogues of anatomical illustrations in 1852. The Geschichte und Bibliographie der Anatomischen Abbildung continued to attract attention as Mortimer Frank revised and translated the catalogue in 1920 and in 1945 an expanded version was published which remains a useful resource of early anatomical illustration. The 1852 edition included 43 woodcuts and three chromolithographs to illustrate the entries which range from the earliest Arabic manuscript illuminations to anatomical atlases published in Choulant's time. Choulant understands the history of anatomic illustration to allow for an easy distinction between artistic and scientific anatomy. Artistic anatomy according to Choulant idealises anatomical beauty and overlooks particulars for the sake of perfection. Scientific anatomy and illustration has a didactic purpose, while artistic anatomy is not intended to instruct anyone with the exception of other artists. Without doubt, scientific anatomy must also generalise in order to teach anatomy, though it would be better at displaying the functions and relative positions of organs than artistic anatomy, where the primary concern lies in musculature. Choulant dedicates a large section of his study not the social history of medical illustration, which is also included, but to specific examples from artists' books and medical textbooks. ... • 15. Anatomy And Physiology Essay How we came to know what we know now about anatomy and physiology has always been a great curiosity of anyone interested in the medical field. Knowing the history can lead to even more discoveries in the future. When you think of anatomy you imagine something like this picture below. But here is where it all began.... The beginning of anatomy and physiology, ironically, began with a curiosity in biology. The first man to create an important contribution to biology was Alcmaeon, in the 5th century, BC. He was the first scientist to have worked with dissection. His focus was in trying to find out from where and how human intelligence came to be. His research never intended to be anatomical. He merely stumbled upon anatomical research. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is famous for his dissection of apes and pigs, it is said he never once dissected a human cadaver. He believed apes were anatomically identical to humans. His work was never questioned until 100's of years later when, Vesalius, a Renaissance anatomist showed people the difference between apes and humans. He discovered more than 200 differences. In 1540, Vesalius showed exactly what Galen was wrong about. Galen's work was much respected regardless. He got a lot right, but also a fair amount wrong . For example, he stated that apes had hearts with 3 ventricles, as did humans. During the Renaissance era, slicing open human cadavers was approved by many people, but unfortunately a lot of professors bypassed the idea. Vesalius was a very dedicated man. He did dissect criminals, but he also managed to snatch the bodies himself. Based on his research, Vesalius created a very detailed book called De Humani Corporis Fabrica.(The Structure of the Human Body). This was the most famous anatomy book of that era. Just like Galen, Hippocrates never once dissected a human cadaver. He stated that "dissection was unpleasant if not cruel," as stated on page 53 of the book Stiff by Mary Roach. Hippocrates believed tendons to be nerves and believed the brain was a mucous secreting gland. Hippocrates was dubbed the Father of Medicine. In 1489 to 1515, Leonardo da Vinci, began to illustrate anatomical features. He is ordered to stop dissecting in 1515 by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Anatomy And Physiology And Describe Their Subdivisions 1) Define anatomy and physiology and describe their subdivisions. – Anatomy studies the structure of body parts and their relationships to one another. Body structures can be seen, felt, and examined closely. – Gross, or macroscopic, anatomy: Study of large body structures visible to the naked eye, such as the heart, lungs and kidneys. – Regional anatomy, all the structures (muscles, bones, blood vessels, nerves, etc.) in a particular region of the body, such as the abdomen or leg, are examined at the same time. – Systemic anatomy– Body structure is studied system by system. When studying the cardiovascular system, you would examine the heart and the blood vessels of the entire body. – Surface anatomy– Study of internal structures as ... Blood flows in one direction through heart because heart has valves that prevent backflow. 3) Name the different levels of structural organization that make up the human body, and explain their relationships. 1. Greys Anatomy Analysis As society undergoes a progressive change in the media and sexuality sector, there has been an increase in the "queering" of characters across all media platforms, most specifically film and television. Furthermore, in order to better understand the changes that have been ongoing in recent years, I looked at ABC Studio Production's hit drama series Grey's Anatomy. Shonda Rhimes created the Golden Globe winning series, which first aired in March of 2005 and is still running today. In addition to creating the show, Rhimes serves as an executive producer along with Betsy Beers, Mark Gordon, Tony Phelan, Joan Rater and Rob Corn. Everyone expects the best care and treatment from a skilled physician and nursing staff. Thus, students in the nursing program and obtaining the basics for the program are needing to learn how to use correct leadership skills, how to rightfully connect them with patients, and how to solve problems at hand. Television shows like Grey's Anatomy, House, and Scrubs are portrayed as medical dramas that make you feel, connect with patients, and get caught up in the drama. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Writers and producers knew from there on out they had to carry on a defining medical drama with the medicine as the main backbone. Ingrid Katz and Alexi Wright wrote a descriptive journal article over the problems seen in episodes of Grey's Anatomy. Of course they found the minor problems with the drama, confrontations, and authority. There were a few more problematic scenes included in the series. Katz and Wright go on to explain the true problems such as, "Two of the characters experiment on a patient, performing an illegal autopsy against a family's wishes. On the show, the characters are forgiven, instead of arrested, because they discover the patient had a rare genetic disease (which Oh blithely mispronounces)"(2). Television shows should explain what can and can't be done in the medical field along with the consequence that follow. Throughout my searching I found another problematic scene from season eleven. This episode leaked personal information pertaining to a resident and a checkup she had. The information made its way through the hospital and made her reputation feel ruined. AS a result the nurse who told a private matter was sent home for two weeks. • 27. Grey's Anatomy Observation Grey's Anatomy is a drama medical show that has been airing on TV since 2005. The show is based on the surgical unit of Seattle Grace Hospital. Throughout the show, we have seen characters evolve from interns to residents to fellows and to attendings and maybe if the character is lucky, they become head of a surgical department. Characters also develop multiple relationships with their colleagues. Some of these relationships are appropriate for the work setting like friendships while some are inappropriate like having a romantic relationship with a colleague. Although I love Grey's Anatomy and could binge watch it all the time, I believe that the sexual encounters characters have at the hospital are unrealistic. Grey's Anatomy is a wonderful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lower ranked characters, like interns, are having romantic relationships with superior characters such as attendings. We see this in the very first episode of the show. Meredith Grey, an intern, sleeps with her boss so to speak, Derek Shepard, an attending. However, they hook up before knowing that either of them work at the same hospital. In real life people would see this as sleeping with the boss to gain special treatment such as getting to assist in more surgeries and better their education. Later in the season, other interns find out that Meredith and Derek have had sexual encounters and they do believe that she does it so she can assist on more surgeries. During multiple episodes characters would hook up in the on–call rooms. This is unrealistic because on–call rooms are for people who need to sleep over in case they are needed for an emergency. They are also used for people who are working a double shift and would like to take a nap on one of their breaks. Characters in the show always seem to find some free time to hook up in the on–call rooms. Again, this is unrealistic because doctors are always busy, especially surgeons. Born into a family of engineers and accountants, a career in medicine did not immediately strike me as the obvious choice until high school. Being a recreational gymnast for most of my life, I have always been fascinated with human anatomy. However, I discovered my interest in science after taking an advanced biology class with a dissection component which made me awestruck, appreciate the anatomy and made me want to study the physiology of the body at the molecular scale. Dissections demanded a precision which enticed the artist in me. While still in high school in India, I discovered that I exceptionally enjoyed being with people and making them feel better in any capacity whether it was volunteering with blood drives or a school for deaf and speech impaired children. It struck me that there was a vast need for people to be in every corner of the earth helped whether they were ill, homeless, or depressed and lonely. I was intrigued by medicine towards the end of high school and the desire to become a physician was confirmed in freshman year of college. When I moved to Canada for undergraduate school, I furthered my interest in science by tutoring, as I enjoyed educating people and going on research laboratory rotations for a couple of weeks. A supervisor at one of the labs mentioned that my skill set would be much better suited for medicine than for bench science because she felt I was not able to fully emerge on account of me being unable to use some of the skills I ... The television series takes place in a medical center formerly known as Seattle Grace Hospital, but over the course of the show is later changed to Seattle Grace–Mercy West Hospital (due to a merge) and then Grey–Sloan Memorial Hospital ("About Grey's Anatomy", n.d.). Grey's Anatomy not only demonstrates the struggle of balancing a personal life as well a professional one among the cast, but also illustrates the difficult decisions and situations that they are faced with as medical practitioners. Through the difficult and life changing circumstances that the aspiring doctors overcome, many examples of Anatomy can be seen as a key factor integrated within the series. • 64. Anatomy And Anatomy Of Anatomy The lights in the ER blink as the storm rages on outside. I snap back from the sadness of the weather to the job at hand. I rush to the ER to see my patient has broken bones, a punctured lung, and a laceration along his calf. There's so much blood everywhere, coming from every open wound on his body. His muscles torn apart and his heart pounding trying to stay alive. Now was my chance everything I learned about anatomy could help me in this moment. No more time to be wasted I go into the room with anatomy deep in my veins. The knowledge of anatomy helps in the saving of lives, but we didn't always have this information. Anatomy has a history, however, how did it all begin, and who brought the knowledge of human anatomy to us. To understand where it all began we have to journey back to 300 BC in the ancient city of Alexandria where we meet Herophilus. For him, it wasn't easy to study human anatomy because there was a ban on dissections in Alexandria. However once that ban was lifted Herophilus was the first person in Greece to publicly dissect both human cadavers and animals. Herophilus was then deemed the father of anatomy and with more studying on the brain he learned that it was the center of the nervous system. Before his time though there was the father of medicine or Hippocrates. Hippocrates was one of the greatest physicians of his time, and also brought the world of anatomy the Hippocratic oath. Now back to today we've advanced further in the knowledge of anatomy and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. Anatomy And Physiology Research Paper Anatomy and Physiology is the study of the human body. Anatomy is the study of the internal and external structure of body parts. Physiology is the study of the function of those body parts. In an anatomy and physiology course you will examine the body parts and the way that these body parts function together to keep us alive. The definition of homeostasis is the means or ability to keep the body stable in order to compensate for environmental changes. A really good example of homeostasis is the body keeping the average temperature of 98.6 degrees. Homeostasis is important because cells rely on the body to live and operate. Homeostasis keeps the body environment under control and keeps the environment right for cells to live and operate. Without ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are positive feedback mechanisms and negative feedback mechanisms. Positive feedback is a closed system that occurs in a feedback loop and the response of the system relies on the feedback system to function. A good example of this would be a blood clot. When a vessel is harmed, platelets begin to stick to the harmed site and discharge chemicals that pull in more platelets. The platelets keep on heaping up and discharge chemicals until a coagulation is formed and you now have a blood clot. Negative feedback is a response that causes a decline in its function. It is a reaction to some kind of stimulus. It usually causes the output of a system to lessen which in turn tends to stabilize the system. The skin protects underlying tissues and organs, excretes salts, water, and organic wastes. It also regulates your body temperature. The hair protects your scalp from UV rays, cushions blows to the head, and insulates the skull. Nails protect the sensitive tips of your fingers and your toes. Exocrine glands keep the skin oily, produce sweat, and secrete earwax to keep the ear from drying out. Ensure the body's inner living tissues and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. Math And Anatomy And Physiology Courses The sheer amount of terminology and conceptual knowledge required for anatomy and physiology can be overwhelming for students. Educational games are one approach to reinforce concepts. In this activity, students work in teams to review anatomy and physiology concepts by creating arrays of descriptive tiles to define a term. Once guessed, students use their spatial knowledge to locate the structure or process within the body. The game challenges students to think about course vocabulary in a different way and to pool their knowledge to get their classmates to guess the words. Pre–/post– test data reveal that students achieve statistically significant learning gains after playing the game, and a survey of student perceptions demonstrates that the game is helpful for learning vocabulary as well as fun to play. The game is easily adaptable for a variety of courses. Introduction Anatomy and Physiology courses are dense with terminology. Students struggle learning the vocabulary in addition to linking structure and function, explaining concepts, and making broader connections. To help facilitate understanding, instructors often turn to classroom activities that promote active learning. (Michael 2006, Lujan 2006, Jensen 2015) Active learning strategies are diverse, but most focus on asking students to reflect on what they know and apply it through an activity. The rise of flipped and active–learning classrooms has resulted in the development of a vast collection of tools to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The layers of the epidermis from deep to most superficial are the stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum grandulosum, stratum lacidum, and the stratum corneum. Each of these layers are unique due to the type of cells located in them which they are named after. They all together make up the epidermis, an avascular, superficial, and made up of epithelial cells. a. The stratum basale is the basal layer of the epidermis. It is the basement layer of the epidermis, the deepest layer. This is a single layer of keratinocytes that are rapidly dividing. The melanocytes synthesize melanin (dark brown/reddish pigment). They are in the deepest layer of the epidermis, the stratum basale. The melanocytes are located on the superficial part of the nucleus of the keratinocytes. The help protect the keratinocytes and the rest of the cells by shielding and absorbing the UV radiation, forming the color. For those who have darker skin there is more melanin produced from these melanocytes. The melanosomes (granules) which are transported along the actin filaments is where the melanin accumulates. i. b. Merkel cells are those located in the epidermal/dermal junctions. They are the cells that branch out into the dermis and connected to sensory neurons. They are the touch receptors located in the deeper in the dermal layer of the skin. i. c. • 77. Greys Anatomy Sharon Lan ENG 104 Terry Bening 22 May 2012 The Anatomy of Grey When times get tough and the only way to survive is to keep fighting, there are two choices: either you sink or you swim. At least that's the mentality that belongs to the young, soon–to–be medical doctors in the 2005 TV series Grey's Anatomy. Already having 8 seasons of surgical miracles, everlasting camaraderies, problematic love triangles, and life–threatening decisions, Grey's Anatomy portrays a "dramedy" which focuses on a highly intellectual group of interns, residents, and attendings that strive to one–up each other in order to rank as the best, save the lives of patients, and keep the reputation of Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital. Nonetheless, many of the characters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Izzie Stevens follows her instincts and cuts Denny Duquette's (a patient she fell in love with) LVAD wire with intent to move him up the heart donor list. At first with his condition, Denny is moved up the list; however, his condition quickly begins to worsen which causes him to die. Ultimately regretting what she had done, Izzie blames herself for what had happened to the man she loved. In addition, another example representing that mistakes are a part of life is shown when Dr. Derek Shepard made an honest mistake in surgery resulting in the death of a man's wife. In the episode "An Honest Mistake" the husband snaps at Derek quoting, "Stop saying you're sorry, you killed her, you're a murderer..." Being accused for an accidental mistake, Derek ultimately decides to take a leave from being a doctor because he discovers that the number of the patients he's saved was significantly lower than the lives he killed unintentionally. Grey's Anatomy displays that no matter how hard we try to avoid them, mistakes are simply just a part of life. "We have to make our own mistakes. We have to learn our own lessons. We have to sweep today's possibility under tomorrow's rug until we can't anymore. Until we finally understand for ourselves what Benjamin Franklin meant. That knowing is better than wondering... And that even the biggest failure, even the worst most intractable mistake, beats the hell out of not trying" (Meredith Grey in "If ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 79. Grey's Anatomy Critique The ABC television drama "Grey's Anatomy" written by Shonda Rhimes and produced by Ann Kindberg, is a popular medical drama about a group of surgeons who work at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in Seattle, Washington. The show focuses mostly around the main character, Meredith Grey, who is at first is a surgical resident and soon becomes a general surgeon, her background story, relationships with others, and her life as a surgeon. The storyline, big–time surgeries/medical cases, intense scenes, and romantic chemistry between the characters make "Grey's Anatomy" a successful medical show. I first started watching "Grey's Anatomy" on a gloomy Saturday morning during my freshman year of high school. I was bored so I decided to browse for new shows to watch and came across "Grey's Anatomy". At first, I was a bit skeptical of the show because I thought it would a typical medical show where the doctors were very serious, and there would not be a story line, just surgeries. After the first episode, I realized I was wrong, the show humorous and addicting. I zoomed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I do not like how the writers and producers make the life of a doctor seem easy and you do not really have to work hard to become a surgeon. The writers make the profession of a doctor seem easy and stress less. Which in reality is not true at all, it is hard to become a doctor and you need to be focused and be dedicated to the job to become successful. "Grey's Anatomy" focuses a lot on big cases or cases where solutions are close to impossible and the surgeons pull a miracle and come up with a solution. One other thing is that the writer, Shonda Rhimes kill off a lot of the characters. The amount of death that happens in "Grey's Anatomy" is insane. I understand it's a medical show and in an actual medical setting the number of deaths are similar, but the doctors do not need to die. Most of the deaths are occurred by motor vehicle ... Disease can suddenly fade away, tumors go missing, and we open someone up to discover the cancer is gone. It's unexplained, It's rare, but it happens. We call it misdiagnosis, say we never saw it in the first place, any explanation but the truth. That life is full of vanishing acts.
