Papoose Analysis
It is safe to say that Laura has a fascination with the Indians. It is the promise of seeing Indians, and
most importantly Indians babies, that allows Pa to secure Laura's desire to move west. However, she
does not associate the Indians with humanity but rather views them as a form of entertainment; more
specifically a form of animalistic entertainment. Laura's main obsession with Indians is their babies.
She asks several times "Pa, when are we going to see a papoose?" (Wilder 123). Her pleading
resembles the attitude I would have when going to the Phoenix Zoo as a child. Whenever there was
a new baby animal, I was so excited to go and look at it. I'd race passed my favorite animals just so I
could view the baby faster. Laura does not want to see a "papoose" because it is a baby and babies
are cute. She already has a baby in the family, and she doesn't show as much interest in Baby Carrie
as she does in a baby Indian. She is interested in the exotic nature of the Indian baby, and treats it
like a different species baby at a zoo. While Laura likely never visited what we think of as a zoo
today, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are described as mostly naked and often wearing animal furs, presently them in a physically
animalistic context, and were free to roam where they pleased. But not that the area is being
colonized, they are being herded out of the way. The portrayal of Indian in an animalistic way
restates the attitudes towards slaves, attempting to "...collapse the boundaries between human and
animal" (Ginsberg 91). Wilder does not describe the communication between the two Indians that
enter their home as language, but as "short, hard sounds" (140). Making a "sound" rather than
speaking depict animalistic communication between the Indians. The language barrier between the

The Dragon's Child By Laurence Yep
Laurence Yep is a Chinese–American writer, and was born 1948 in San Francisco, California. He
studied at many colleges including: University at Buffalo, Marquette University, and University of
California. Yep has been a successful author to over 50 books and is still writing more. He has
earned different awards for his books including the John Newbery Medal, Laura Ingalls Wilder
Medal, Phoenix Award, and the Jane Addams Children's Book Award. When Yep was young, his
teacher would joke with the class and say the only way to earn an "A" in her class was to have a
piece of writing accepted into a magazine. This sparked an interest of writing in his life. Yep worked
in his family store and often observed people to make his fictional characters seem more real.
Yep was born in San Francisco, but he had a Chinese family. One of the problems he faced was
trying to fit into his family's Chinese background. Yep felt like he was too American to fit into
Chinatown and too Chinese to fit anywhere else. Many of his books have this homogeneous point of
conflict in them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The book is about a young Chinese boy named Yep Gon and his journey with his father to work in
the Golden Mountain (San Francisco). Yep's father, a Yeoman, is torn between his family living in
China as he works in the US. Yep's Father was born in the US and has the problem of not being able
to feel more Chinese than American. In the book Yep and his father are faced with xenophobia
Americans not wanting foreigners in the USA. The book explains how hard it is for foreigners to

My Love Of My Life
Running on the vast, open field with the glimmering sun trailing behind as it descends behind the
tall prairie grass, my friend Laura Ingles Wilder and I would play for hours. Although our lives were
separated by many years, I followed her journey and experienced her life through her novels. My
love of books stemmed from my mom. Since before I could read, I would lose track of time as she
read the tales of Laura and her family to me as they traveled across the country and built new houses
wherever they landed. After my parents divorced, my life began to resemble the Wilders' nomadic
lifestyle as we bounced between rentals every year for seven years until my grandpa helped us
purchase a townhouse of our own in a better school district. Since that stage in my life, I have
continued to use the books to carry me through difficult times. In elementary school, I read the
Magic Treehouse series about two kids who travel in time and space by touching pictures in novels
because it gave me the opportunity to do the same. I trampled through the thick evergreen in the
rainforest while my parents argued over child support and who had my sister and I for the holidays.
I sprinted across the steaming lava in Pompeii as my father was passed out drunk on the couch and
my sister grew tired of inventing games for us to play. The characters demonstrated the large
amount of change young people can bring upon the world as they saved numerous lives on their
adventures. This inspired me to help my

Essay on Narrative Style of Little House on The Prairie
Narrative Style of Little House on The Prairie
When you first start reading Little House on the Prairie you notice it is told through the eyes of a
little girl named Laura. Her point of view is very realistic and captivating. She pays very close
attention to the details of the day to day living and the events that are happening around her. She
also notices how the prairie looks and what the weather is like each day. With her descriptions you
can picture everything in your mind clearly, and you feel like you are right there next to Laura living
her life.
When Laura is describing something she appeals to our senses by informing you how something
smells, feels, sounds, or tastes. She describes how Ma makes their food and what ... Show more

First, he unhitched and unharnessed Pet and Patty, and he put them on their picket–line. While Pet
and Patty were rolling, Pa pulled all the grass from a large, round space of ground. When the space
was clear of grass, Pa laid a handful of dry grass in its center. From the creek bottoms he brought an
armful of twigs and dead wood. He laid small twigs and larger twigs and then the wood on the
handful of dry grass, and he lighted the grass. Then Pa brought water from the creek, while Mary
and Laura helped Ma get supper" (28, 29).
Another part of the story that Laura describes very deeply was when Pa built the log cabin, chimney,
and the well digging. You knew every step and how he did it and what he used to make everything.
If a person wanted to, they could probably build a log cabin or dig a well by her descriptions.
Laura enjoys describing the way the prairie looks each day because she loves it so much. She pays
close attention to the details of the flowers and grasses and how the wind is blowing. The animals
on the prairie are described often also since the prairie was full of wildlife back then. You often
found her describing the weather too. She found the weather on the prairie very interesting and quite
different than the weather in Wisconsin. "Day after day was hotter then the day before. The wind
was hot. The grass was turning yellow. The whole world was rippling green and gold under the
blazing sky. At noon the wind died. No birds

How Laura Ingalls Wilder Changed My Life
Simplicity Living in Wisconsin all of my life I've come to love many aspects of its history and
culture, but the most amazing part about Wisconsin is the inspirational people who have lived here.
One such person, Laura Ingalls Wilder, is best known for her Little House On The Prairie book
series, telling tales of her childhood living with her family on the prairie. Her stories and legacy will
always be an inspiration to people everywhere, including myself. Laura once said, "It is the sweet,
simple things of life which are the real ones after all." This single quote changed my perspective on
life. Growing up I didn't always have much; I wasn't by any means poor, but this being said I also
wasn't rich. My family and I had to often make do with what we had. Now, although after the fact,
I've begun to finally realize that while I may not have had much money, I was blessed with many
other things. I had a mom who could find everything free, a brother who could invent whatever we
couldn't buy, and a sister and dad who could make me laugh about practically anything. We weren't
wealthy with money , but we had time, talent, and a love ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

She is remembered by many as the lovable, charismatic little girl in the Little House On The Prairie

remembered when I die. Knowing this, every day I try to be a bubbly, loving person to everyone I
meet, never taking life too seriously. I want to be helpful and caring, not selfish and cold. . Although
we all have our moments when we are feeling down or we put others down, I strive to not let such
moments affect my entire life. . This single quote from Laura Ingalls Wilder inspires me everyday to

Quad Text Set Assignment: My Side of the Mountain
Target Text The story takes place in eastern New York in the Catskill Mountains. It is set around the
1950s and the main character is a teenage boy names Sam. Sam is a teenager who gets permission
from his father to find his great–grandfathers land and live there. He does this because he feels
cramped in his New York house. As he goes on living in the woods, he finds himself struggling for
survival. He trains a falcon to hunt for him and learns how to live off the land. The book talks about
survival and living on your own. It's a realistic book about the dangers and rewards of living
isolated. Since the setting is in the 1950s, it gives discussion for the students on how things were
back then, and how they are different today. One of the hard aspects that I think students will have

The video is about Laura Ingalls Wilder's biography. It explains how she was raised and the daily
life she experience. The life of Laura will get students interested in the life of the past of the early
settlers. The clip briefly describes the locations that Laura and her family traveled as they went
across America. Laura's family had intrinsic values that focused on community, relationships, and
personal growth. Students can discuss the differences between the values held back then and the
values held now. Intrinsic values vs extrinsic values could be the topic. This text will hook the
students into seeing how cool it is to be living off the land and how you can have fun working
outside and doing chores that build character. I believe it will support the target text by giving the
students an idea of how life was for the Ingalls and other early settlers. This all goes back to how
they will read the main text and see how Sam struggled for survival but also reaped rewards for his
hard efforts.

How To Visualize Laura In The Big Woods
One of the first times a reader can visualize Laura as a tomboy is in the book Little House in the Big
Woods. The scene is set that Laura, Mary and Pa are playing an outdoor game. This particular game
calls for the players to be rugged and courageous. At this point, it is clear to a reader that Laura and
Mary are a representation of two different types of a female character. The game calls for a chase to
begin and "with a wild leap and a scramble she went over the woodbox" dragging her sister, Mary,
with her to safety. Wilder is clearing stating in her narrative that Laura and Mary are afraid of their
Pa just by seeing the look in his eyes as they became "so fierce that it all seemed real" (BW 35).
This is the section where the personalities of Mary and Laura separate. ... Show more content on

When they look into their Pa's eyes Mary is "so frightened that she could not move" (35), whereas
Laura is not afraid and quick on her feet. She is so rugged like a tomboy that she is strong enough
(even though she is younger and smaller than Mary) to save the both of them in the game of "Mad
Dog". Laura's father reinforces this tomboy persona with the declaration "You're only a little half–
pint of cider half drunk up, but by Jinks! you're as strong as a little French horse!" (BW 35). This
particular scene might be the beginning of where Laura became son like to Pa. This direct
connection to being a tomboy is alluded to in the color of Laura's hair. The two characters of Laura
and Mary have different color hair; Laura's is brown whereas Mary's is blond. Laura states Mary is
rarely punished and says, "Mary was a good little girl who always kept her dress clean and neat and
minded her manners. Mary had lovely golden curls" (BW 174–75). Laura is often punished for
being mischievous and when she slaps Mary because of her blond curls, Pa states, "Well, Laura, my
hair is brown"

By:Callie Pagel
Laura Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7, 1867, near Pepin, Wisconsin. From 1882–1885 she
was a teacher in South Dakota. She married Almanzo Wilder in 1885. In 1932, she published Little
House in the Big Woods, the first of her "Little House" books. Wilder finished the last book in 1943.
On February 10, 1957, she died at age 90, on her farm in Mansfield, Missouri.
Early Life
Laura Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7, 1867, to Charles and Caroline Ingalls in their log
cabin just outside of Pepin, Wisconsin. In her books, Wilder would later come to call the cabin "The
Little House in the Big Woods." Two years after her birth, in 1869, her family moved to Kansas,
which would become the setting for her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During her time teaching at Bouchie School, her parents often sent a family friend named Almanzo
Wilder to pick her up and bring her home for weekend visits.
Marriage and Children
Over the course of their wagon rides home, Laura and Almanzo fell in love. On August 25, 1885,
the two were married at a congregational church in South Dakota. Afterward, Laura quit teaching to
raise children and help Almanzo work the farm. In the winter of 1886, Laura gave birth to a
daughter, Rose. In August of 1889 she had a son who tragically died within a month of his birth. Not
long after, Almanzo contracted diphtheria and was partially paralyzed. To make matters worse, in
1890, the Wilders ' home burned to the ground.
After four years of drifting from place to place, in 1894 the Wilders bought a 200–acre farm in the
Ozarks of Mansfield, Missouri. On Rocky Ridge Farm, as they came to call it, the Wilders built a
farmhouse, raised livestock and did all their own farm work.
The 'Little House ' Series
In the 1910s Wilder 's daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, by then grown up and a reporter for the San
Francisco Bulletin, encouraged her mother to write about her childhood. In the 1920s, Wilder 's first
attempt at writing an autobiography, called Pioneer Girl, was uniformly rejected by publishers.
Determined to succeed, Wilder spent the next several years reworking her writing,

Gender Roles in Children’s Books: An Examination of...
People use several different classification systems to help organize a complex society. For example,
scientists use a system composed of hierarchies in order to place animals in their proper kingdom,
phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. By creating this classification system, people of
society are better able to understand the relationships that these animals have with each other. Just
as scientists use this hierarchy to organize animals, people use the concept of gender to classify their
own kind. However, many people fail to realize that gender, unlike the system of hierarchies used by
scientists to classify animals, is not biologically based. While sex is a biological concept, gender can
be defined as the sociological, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From birth, baby boys are dressed in blue and baby girls are dressed in pink and are sometimes
characterized by pierced ears.
Once gender roles are assigned, people treat one another accordingly. Boys are taught to be
competitive and are trained to use teamwork, whereas girls are treated more delicately because
society expects them to be nurturing. From birth on, then, girls and boys are taught by society what
it means to be feminine and masculine, respectively.
Another sociologist, Michael Messner, illustrates how society "does gender" by discussing the
elective affinity between masculinity and sports through his piece entitled, "Boyhood, Organized
Sports, and the Construction of Masculinities" (Messner, 1990). In this article Messner claims that
sports teach people to devalue femininity, which is evident through negative expressions coined by
society such as "You throw like a girl." Because playing sports teaches aggression and teamwork,
the world of sports is an institution that is built around masculinity. Even when women play sports,
they are masculinized.
Due to the idea that gender roles are assigned at birth, it would be interesting to explore how
children's book authors promote masculinity and femininity through the messages conveyed in their
storytelling. Two books from different time periods, Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House in the Big
Woods and J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, will be examined.
Lorber would argue that in

Laura Ingalls Wilder Research Paper
Have you ever wondered about how people lived in the late 1800s in America? Historians aren't the
only ones who can teach you about those times. Laura Ingalls Wilder lived in those days and
experienced all of the joys, pain and hardship of living the pioneer life. She decided to write about
her experiences later in life, and those writings became famous for providing a window into what
life was like then. This paper will detail the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her contributions to
literature and recording american history as the writer of the Little House book series.

A Brief Biography Of Laura Ingalls Wilder
Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote many books that we are familiar with today; in particular, the Little
House series. Even before Laura Ingalls Wilder had the fame of the books, which were not
published until later in her life, she would write short nonfiction pieces for newspapers and
magazines (Hines). Laura Ingalls Wilder started first as a teacher, fell in love with and married
Almanzo Wilder which caused her to quit teaching, and subsequently had two children – a daughter
named Rose and a son who died soon after his birth. Although Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote many
books which are what gained her lasting success; she also wrote essays about her outlook on life as
well as politics during WWI. Rose, her daughter, grew up and like her mother eventually began to
write for a newspaper. She encouraged her mother to write about her childhood. The original story
Ms. Wilder wrote was very different than the one we are familiar with today. Originally called,
Pioneer Girl, it was a first person account covering her life from about the time she was three until
the age of eighteen, and began with the words "Once upon a time..." (Mumford). The publishers
kept on rejecting it, but Laura never gave up (Hines). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

that is exactly what her writings have done, they have captured the essence of the pioneer way of life
that those of us today can only imagine about. Her characters have remain well loved and enjoyed

Little House On The Prairie
Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House series has been praised as a classic and beloved story of manifest
destiny and one family's travels west. Though typically classified as children's fiction, Ingalls
Wilder presents the books as a memoir of her own childhood; the books are written in third person,
but the protagonist is a girl named Laura who has very specific memories of her young life traveling
around the Midwest. In Little House on the Prairie, young Laura and her family leave their cozy
home in the woods of Wisconsin to travel into Indian Territory near Independence, Kansas. Pa and
Ma are fiercely independent and determined to succeed in their new, completely wild surroundings.

When leaving Wisconsin, the Ingalls must say goodbye to all of their family that lives close by,
resigning themselves to writing yearly letters instead. In this situation, the nuclear family chooses to
assert its individualism by leaving both their family and the newly crowded woods. Libertarianism
largely glorifies the free will of the individual, thus the choice to break free and become independent
certainly espouses the ideology. The family continues its independent streak as Ma, Pa, Mary, Laura,
and Baby Carrie construct their new house and lives on the Kansas prairie. They travel with only
their most important belongings but, for the most part, must build an entirely new house and
furnishings. This task, of course, is presented as incredibly easy. When the family finally arrives at
an acceptable plot of land, the land is completely empty; however, Pa hauls logs from the creek
bottoms and "all by himself, he built the house three logs high" (58). The family must also make all
new furniture (luckily, Pa is a skilled carpenter), put in a puncheon floor, install a working fireplace
and chimney, hunt for their own food, and trade furs in Independence to buy a plow for the next
farming season. The family's success can certainly be attributed to luck or Pa and Ma's skills, but
may also be an outcome of their fierce independence and determination to be on their own. The
most striking example of independence comes when Pa decides to put a real roof on their home,

What Is The Role Of Laura Ingalls Wilder's Early Childhood
The role of a pioneer women usually involved cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children.
The school houses were really far apart from where most people lived because everything was so
spread out, so most of the kids in the pioneer days were taught at home by the women in the house,
or they went to the school houses by wagon or they had to walk depending on how close it was.
Some of the women worked as partners with the pioneer men with establishing homes. Once and in
a while they would bring the wood in, but they mostly just did the household stuff, and they took
care of the kids.

Evaluation Of Lesson Assessments:. • The First Assessment
Evaluation of Lesson Assessments:
The first assessment is an informal assessment and it addresses objective three. It does not however,
provide much insight as to if the students are accomplishing objective two. Also, I do not think that
there is enough class discussion about the contrast of roles of family members, historical fiction, and
memoirs to gain much of an understanding about where the students are with their learning.
The T–Chart assessment is well thought out. However, there is no rubric so it will be difficult for the
students to remember and know what is expected of them. It also, really only addresses objective
three. This is a good idea, but it could be improved upon by the use of a rubric.
The final assessment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Demonstrate comprehension by answering questions about a text after listening to it. o The second
objective is measurable because you can determine if the students understand by the student's
answers to the questions. However, I do not like how vague the objective is. I think that the
objective needs to add something about what type of questions they will be answering such as, key
detail questions, character questions, etc. The objective is realistic, but there is no time, however,
time is not always needed. o I would rewrite the objective this way:
By the end of the lesson the students will be able to demonstrate comprehension of the text by
answering questions about key details in the text.
Practice analysis by drawing connections between a text and their own experiences, by comparing
and contrasting ways families are alike and different, and by categorizing information using a
graphic organizer o This third objective is very wordy and seems confusing to me. I think that it is
trying to address two separate standards in one objective, which is overwhelming. The objective is
measurable, specific, and action–oriented however. The only problem is that the objective is
unrealistic for one lesson because it addresses too many concepts in one objective. It also crosses
curriculums, which could get confusing when assessing. o I would rewrite the objective this way:
By the end of the lesson, the students will be

The Nameless Governess in The Turn of the Screw: Hero or...
Something is amiss in Bly. The nameless Governess has always been a person of interest in
literature. She has been analyzed time and time again from a trusting standpoint; taking everything
she says at face value. Taken with no thought of deception and that ghosts are real and the
Governess' is attempting to protect Miles, not harm him. Also from a psychological or Freudian
perspective indicating she was mentally disturbed and kills Miles. Whether the Governess was
simply a confused youth, thrust into a position beyond her ability and is further saddled with the
tasks of protecting her two charges with ghosts or a manipulative shrew who means nothing but
harm to those around her because her mental state is questionable. The Governess ... Show more

One critical response by Edmund Wilson regarded the Governess as hallucinatory. Suggesting that
the ghosts she saw were so detailed that they were of her own imagining. "The governess is viewed
as an unreliable narrator, either neurotic or actually insane; and the children are considered either
uncorrupted or corrupted by the treatment of the governess herself (Henry James, The Turn of the
Screw – Introduction)." He further goes on to suggest that, "...the governess is a neurotic spinster
whose repressed passion for her employer, the children's bachelor uncle, causes her to hallucinate."
Wilson took a very Freudian approach to his critical response of The Turn of the Screw, for when
Wilson was reviewing it psychology was all the rage in 1934.
Each writer of critical analysis for this story seems to oppose the others. Some people believe it to
be a battle of good and evil, while others suggest that it was the Governess who was corrupt, and yet
still others who believe that the Governess was truly saving the children.
One critical analysis of The Turn of the Screw comes to us from Robert Heilman who took the good
vs. evil view. Heilman suggest that the children are representative of good and the ghosts of evil.
The Governess' description of the children indicates their purity and goodness, referring to them
repeatedly as beautiful and even angelic or

2016, 7th ed.), addressing Christians and non–believers. Paul uses the directing style when
addressing Christians, and he models prayer (King James Version: Book of Colossians, 1). He uses
the coaching style when approaching the born–again Christians, encouraging them to actively seek
forgiveness (Book of Col., 1). Paul's toil in the establishment of the early Christian Church
exemplifies his supporting style (Book of Col, 1). Finally, Paul demonstrates delegating style when
he offers is Final Instructions (Book of Col., 4) to his followers.
The communication used by a Situational Leader varies according to the style the Leader has to
employ with his follower. The communication is focused on goal achievement when directing, while
coaching and supporting tacks on encouragement to reach goals (Northouse). Proper communication
is essential during these stages. However, communication is in the follower's court when the leader
is delegating, as "[...] followers take responsibility for getting the job done the way they see fit
(Northouse, p. 95–96).
Contingency Leadership: Satan
I might be going out on a limb here, but I think Satan provides a good example of a Contingency
Leader. He tries repeatedly to manipulate the situation to his benefit (Northouse, 2014, 6th ed.). It
didn't work in Heaven when he tried to overthrow God (Book of Isaiah, 14), thus, this type of
leadership is not

Essay on In Defense of Historical Fiction
The genre of historical fiction novels can be subdivided into many categories and often crosses
genres, such as historical mysteries and romances. The traditional definition of the historical fiction
genre is "fiction set in the past" where the author is writing from research rather than personal
experience. This definition leaves a lot of room for interpretation, controversy, and contradiction.
Critics in the media, even when they praise individual historical novels in their reviews, somehow
manage to turn this praise into criticism of the genre as a whole. In 1950, author Howard Fast, a
historical novelist himself, wrote: "This is an era of many historical novels, few of them good and
very few indeed which have more than a nodding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is a classic example of a successful historical
fiction novel depicting the life and adventures of youthful boys in the Mississippi River town of St.
Petersburg, Missouri and various locations along the river through Arkansas. Readers of this novel
are confronted with difficult themes such as slavery and revolution in the south before the Civil War.
In chapter 6 of the novel we see Huck's father, Pap, confronted with a finely dressed and educated
free African American. As the man passes Pap states, "There, now – that's a specimen. They call that
a govment that can't sell a free nigger till he's been in the State six months. Here's a govment that
calls itself a govment, and lets on to be a govment, and thinks it is a govment, and yet's got to set
stock–still for six whole months before it can take a hold of a prowling, thieving, infernal, white–
shirted free nigger." (Twain 151). This little speech by Pap shows that he's a blatant racist who treats
African–Americans as though they are not at all human beings. This novel is full of authentic points
of view from the various characters Huck encounters on his adventures. Twain uses dialog such as
this to educate readers about past conflicts such as the Civil War and slavery. Although highly
controversial, this novel has been used as an educational tool in English literature classrooms for
years. The point is there are numerous historical fiction

The Agriculture Industry By How The Producer Orchestrates...
Envision a long day of sorting off cattle, doing chores, and doing odd jobs around the farm then
having to come home and make supper for the family and still try to be engaged in a child's day at
school? After a long day, a family often sits in the living room and watches hours of television
shows, or browses movies on Netflix, but the only shows that you receive are the farming shows.
Although these shows may be relaxing and interesting, they can form negative views about the
agriculture industry by how the producer orchestrates the program. When people watch a movie,
they talk about how farming culture has enough farming specific mannerisms that other non–
farming people will misunderstand when they see popular representations of it in modern culture.
For example, glimpses of farm life on the internet and television can show how each gender plays a
role in the agriculture industry. People think the only gender who can normal labor are the
stereotypical "farmer boys." When in reality anyone can work in agriculture. The public perception
of farming culture is outdated, as revealed by gender roles in the mainstream representation of
agricultural living.
When people think of the farming movies, a couple of generalizations come to their mind. The
women are inside the house cooking meals, cleaning and putting everything in order, sending the
kids off to school, and helping with their homework, as well as making a chore list for them to help
the men out. The men, on the other

The conflict plays a big part in the book because it provides the climax of the story. It's what the
character is fighting with or against. There are two types of conflict, external and internal. External
conflict is when a character is against an outside force. Internal conflict is when the character is
experiencing two different desires , such as good vs. evil thoughts. The conflict in Little House on
the Prairie is external because soldiers are coming in from New York to take the white settlers off of

Wilder's 'Ma' By Wilder: Analysis
"So as much food as possible must be stored away in the little house before winter came" (Wilder

is storing away food for the winter and it talks about what specific process they go through annually.
This represents the family's constant battle to survive against nature. This is significant because it
sets up the main point of the plot for the entire book.
"'Pick up the pretty pebbles, Laura' Ma said. 'And another time, don't be so greedy'" (Wilder 174).

##ymbolism, And Language In The Little House By Laura...
Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote many books, and even received five Newberry Honor Medals for them.
She was born on February 7th 1876 and lived until age ninety. Wilder was the author of The Little
House series the second book in the series is about her husband's experiences growing up on a farm
in New York. The third book is about the time Wilder spent on the American Prairie. In these books,
Wilder uses imagery, symbolism, and language from when she was growing up. One of the most
common elements is Wilder's writing is imagery. She uses beautiful compilations of words to paint a
picture in the minds of readers. An example of this is, "In a perfect circle the sky curved down to the
level land and the wagon was in the circle's exact middle," (13). This is a description of how it
looked when Wilder was traveling on the American Prairie. This quote could make you feel two
different things, freedom and loneliness. At this point in time, Wilder and her family were probably
feeling a mix of both. Later in the book, Wilder provides another example, Everything was striped
there. Stripes of sunshine came through the cracks in the west wall, and stripes of shadow came
down from the poles overhead. The stripes of shade and sunshine were all across Laura's bare feet.
And through the cracks between the logs she could see stripes of prairie. The sweet smell of the
prairie mixed with the sweet smell of cut wood. This particular piece of imagery describes how it
looked when Pa first finished

The Giver Themes
In the book The Giver, each dwelling owns three reference books. The books include a dictionary, a

books are the books I would miss the most and are some of my favorite books. Ever since I was

Manifest Destiny In Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House On...
The level of entitlement involved in Manifest Destiny might be considered childish when boiled
down to the brass ideas around why the Americans of the nineteenth century felt promised to
connect The east coast to the west coast, but the way in which Wilder shows this infant demand for
the entire continent seems almost puritan in nature. Through the innocent perspectives of Laura and
her siblings, the reader of Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House on the Prairie," is presented with an
edited first hand response to the dogmatism of manifest destiny by means of overcoming every
obstacle ever so seamlessly and the confusion of why they are allowed to just settle the west under
new ownership.
This concept of the promised people, the American people, being blessed with God's grace of
overcoming the odds of settling in this harsh environment is basically a predetermined mentality of
inevitability set forth by the puritans that are the backbone of the society in the novel. This entire
attitude can be outlined in the catch phrase of the entire novel: "All's well that ends well," (Ingalls
24). It doesn't matter if it's a flash flood, a pack of wolves, carbon monoxide, native americans or
even wildfires, for the Ingalls, representing the western American settler culture as an ideal whole,
the odds are in their favor, despite the harsh reality of the indifferent environment. They might be
afraid in the moments that decide if they flourish or perish, but the family as a whole is never

Historical authenticity refers to the use of language, the depiction of the details of everyday life, the
faithfulness to the historical record and the need for readers to perceive that the language situation

Even though she wrote them much later in life, she could recall an amazing tale of life as a child,

The Importance Of Bringing Little House To Television
Little House on the Prairie is one of the most beloved television series of all time and is based on the

and didn't want another rural show. Friendly then contacted Michael Landon and asked him if he
would direct the pilot movie should any network end up expressing interest. Landon had starred in
Bonanza until it was cancelled in 1972. He was under contract to do another series for NBC, but
didn't like any of the ideas they had come up with. He read the pilot script, had his children read the
books and then told Friendly he would like to direct and play the father, Charles Ingalls. Friendly
agreed and said NBC probably wouldn't have been interested without Landon's involvement. Karen
Grassle, Melissa Gilbert, and Melissa Sue Anderson were cast as Caroline, Laura, and Mary Ingalls,
while Carrie Ingalls was played by twins, Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush. Last but not least, Victor
French played Mr. Edwards and turned in a memorable performance in the pilot movie. The movie
was filmed in January 1974 and broadcast on March 30, 1974 as the NBC Saturday movie of the
week. It drew great ratings and was picked up as a series on NBC's fall

Themes And Characters In The Book 'Amaroq The Wolf'
A. The writer's style is his personal choice dependent on the setting, plot and characters means these
three aspects of the story will be taken by the author and decided how it will best tell his story. The
writer must use his skill with words to develop his style for the story, since the reader is completely
at the mercy of the writer waiting for his words to write so he can feel, hear, see, smell and
contemplate what is going to happen next. The writer must tell the reader what the world looks like
and how it changes, who is in it and where the reader is going. One writer will deal with a genre
completely different from another, developing their own style and vision. Often a writer's style can
become so familiar readers they can recognize the author just from reading a passage.
B. Connotations that greatly extend their dictionary meaning that was noticeable included: sick,
something thought of as extremely cool or nice, feel me is used to expressed an understanding of
dissention. Lastly there was the word stiff indicating someone who is not up to date or full of rules.
C. The use of similes and metaphors were greatly used in the first part of the book called Amaroq
the Wolf.
Simile: "then he bayed a wild note that sounded like the wind on a frozen sea" Metaphor: "Jello
went back to the puppies and the three sped away like dark birds."
Hyperbole: "The great wolf's eyes softened at the sight of the little wolves then quickly hardened in
to brittle yellow jewels"

Papoose Analysis

  • 1. Papoose Analysis It is safe to say that Laura has a fascination with the Indians. It is the promise of seeing Indians, and most importantly Indians babies, that allows Pa to secure Laura's desire to move west. However, she does not associate the Indians with humanity but rather views them as a form of entertainment; more specifically a form of animalistic entertainment. Laura's main obsession with Indians is their babies. She asks several times "Pa, when are we going to see a papoose?" (Wilder 123). Her pleading resembles the attitude I would have when going to the Phoenix Zoo as a child. Whenever there was a new baby animal, I was so excited to go and look at it. I'd race passed my favorite animals just so I could view the baby faster. Laura does not want to see a "papoose" because it is a baby and babies are cute. She already has a baby in the family, and she doesn't show as much interest in Baby Carrie as she does in a baby Indian. She is interested in the exotic nature of the Indian baby, and treats it like a different species baby at a zoo. While Laura likely never visited what we think of as a zoo today, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are described as mostly naked and often wearing animal furs, presently them in a physically animalistic context, and were free to roam where they pleased. But not that the area is being colonized, they are being herded out of the way. The portrayal of Indian in an animalistic way restates the attitudes towards slaves, attempting to "...collapse the boundaries between human and animal" (Ginsberg 91). Wilder does not describe the communication between the two Indians that enter their home as language, but as "short, hard sounds" (140). Making a "sound" rather than speaking depict animalistic communication between the Indians. The language barrier between the Ingalls and the Indians parallel the language barrier between humans and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Dragon's Child By Laurence Yep Laurence Yep is a Chinese–American writer, and was born 1948 in San Francisco, California. He studied at many colleges including: University at Buffalo, Marquette University, and University of California. Yep has been a successful author to over 50 books and is still writing more. He has earned different awards for his books including the John Newbery Medal, Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal, Phoenix Award, and the Jane Addams Children's Book Award. When Yep was young, his teacher would joke with the class and say the only way to earn an "A" in her class was to have a piece of writing accepted into a magazine. This sparked an interest of writing in his life. Yep worked in his family store and often observed people to make his fictional characters seem more real. Yep was born in San Francisco, but he had a Chinese family. One of the problems he faced was trying to fit into his family's Chinese background. Yep felt like he was too American to fit into Chinatown and too Chinese to fit anywhere else. Many of his books have this homogeneous point of conflict in them. ... • 3. My Love Of My Life Running on the vast, open field with the glimmering sun trailing behind as it descends behind the tall prairie grass, my friend Laura Ingles Wilder and I would play for hours. Although our lives were separated by many years, I followed her journey and experienced her life through her novels. My love of books stemmed from my mom. Since before I could read, I would lose track of time as she read the tales of Laura and her family to me as they traveled across the country and built new houses wherever they landed. After my parents divorced, my life began to resemble the Wilders' nomadic lifestyle as we bounced between rentals every year for seven years until my grandpa helped us purchase a townhouse of our own in a better school district. Since that stage in my life, I have continued to use the books to carry me through difficult times. In elementary school, I read the Magic Treehouse series about two kids who travel in time and space by touching pictures in novels because it gave me the opportunity to do the same. I trampled through the thick evergreen in the rainforest while my parents argued over child support and who had my sister and I for the holidays. I sprinted across the steaming lava in Pompeii as my father was passed out drunk on the couch and my sister grew tired of inventing games for us to play. The characters demonstrated the large amount of change young people can bring upon the world as they saved numerous lives on their adventures. This inspired me to help my ... • 4. Essay on Narrative Style of Little House on The Prairie Narrative Style of Little House on The Prairie When you first start reading Little House on the Prairie you notice it is told through the eyes of a little girl named Laura. Her point of view is very realistic and captivating. She pays very close attention to the details of the day to day living and the events that are happening around her. She also notices how the prairie looks and what the weather is like each day. With her descriptions you can picture everything in your mind clearly, and you feel like you are right there next to Laura living her life. When Laura is describing something she appeals to our senses by informing you how something smells, feels, sounds, or tastes. She describes how Ma makes their food and what ... While Pet and Patty were rolling, Pa pulled all the grass from a large, round space of ground. When the space was clear of grass, Pa laid a handful of dry grass in its center. From the creek bottoms he brought an armful of twigs and dead wood. He laid small twigs and larger twigs and then the wood on the handful of dry grass, and he lighted the grass. Then Pa brought water from the creek, while Mary and Laura helped Ma get supper" (28, 29). Another part of the story that Laura describes very deeply was when Pa built the log cabin, chimney, and the well digging. You knew every step and how he did it and what he used to make everything. If a person wanted to, they could probably build a log cabin or dig a well by her descriptions. Laura enjoys describing the way the prairie looks each day because she loves it so much. She pays close attention to the details of the flowers and grasses and how the wind is blowing. The animals on the prairie are described often also since the prairie was full of wildlife back then. You often found her describing the weather too. She found the weather on the prairie very interesting and quite different than the weather in Wisconsin. "Day after day was hotter then the day before. The wind was hot. The grass was turning yellow. The whole world was rippling green and gold under the blazing sky. At noon the wind died. No birds ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Her stories and legacy will always be an inspiration to people everywhere, including myself. Laura once said, "It is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all." This single quote changed my perspective on life. Growing up I didn't always have much; I wasn't by any means poor, but this being said I also wasn't rich. My family and I had to often make do with what we had. Now, although after the fact, I've begun to finally realize that while I may not have had much money, I was blessed with many other things. I had a mom who could find everything free, a brother who could invent whatever we couldn't buy, and a sister and dad who could make me laugh about practically anything. It is set around the 1950s and the main character is a teenage boy names Sam. Sam is a teenager who gets permission from his father to find his great–grandfathers land and live there. He does this because he feels cramped in his New York house. As he goes on living in the woods, he finds himself struggling for survival. He trains a falcon to hunt for him and learns how to live off the land. The book talks about survival and living on your own. It's a realistic book about the dangers and rewards of living isolated. • 8. How To Visualize Laura In The Big Woods One of the first times a reader can visualize Laura as a tomboy is in the book Little House in the Big Woods. The scene is set that Laura, Mary and Pa are playing an outdoor game. This particular game calls for the players to be rugged and courageous. At this point, it is clear to a reader that Laura and Mary are a representation of two different types of a female character. The game calls for a chase to begin and "with a wild leap and a scramble she went over the woodbox" dragging her sister, Mary, with her to safety. Wilder is clearing stating in her narrative that Laura and Mary are afraid of their Pa just by seeing the look in his eyes as they became "so fierce that it all seemed real" (BW 35). This is the section where the personalities of Mary and Laura separate. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When they look into their Pa's eyes Mary is "so frightened that she could not move" (35), whereas Laura is not afraid and quick on her feet. She is so rugged like a tomboy that she is strong enough (even though she is younger and smaller than Mary) to save the both of them in the game of "Mad Dog". Laura's father reinforces this tomboy persona with the declaration "You're only a little half– pint of cider half drunk up, but by Jinks! you're as strong as a little French horse!" (BW 35). This particular scene might be the beginning of where Laura became son like to Pa. This direct connection to being a tomboy is alluded to in the color of Laura's hair. The two characters of Laura and Mary have different color hair; Laura's is brown whereas Mary's is blond. Laura states Mary is rarely punished and says, "Mary was a good little girl who always kept her dress clean and neat and minded her manners. Mary had lovely golden curls" (BW 174–75). Laura is often punished for being mischievous and when she slaps Mary because of her blond curls, Pa states, "Well, Laura, my hair is brown" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For example, scientists use a system composed of hierarchies in order to place animals in their proper kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. By creating this classification system, people of society are better able to understand the relationships that these animals have with each other. Just as scientists use this hierarchy to organize animals, people use the concept of gender to classify their own kind. However, many people fail to realize that gender, unlike the system of hierarchies used by scientists to classify animals, is not biologically based. While sex is a biological concept, gender can be defined as the sociological, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From birth, baby boys are dressed in blue and baby girls are dressed in pink and are sometimes characterized by pierced ears. Once gender roles are assigned, people treat one another accordingly. Boys are taught to be competitive and are trained to use teamwork, whereas girls are treated more delicately because society expects them to be nurturing. From birth on, then, girls and boys are taught by society what it means to be feminine and masculine, respectively. Another sociologist, Michael Messner, illustrates how society "does gender" by discussing the elective affinity between masculinity and sports through his piece entitled, "Boyhood, Organized Sports, and the Construction of Masculinities" (Messner, 1990). In this article Messner claims that sports teach people to devalue femininity, which is evident through negative expressions coined by society such as "You throw like a girl." Because playing sports teaches aggression and teamwork, the world of sports is an institution that is built around masculinity. Even when women play sports, they are masculinized. Due to the idea that gender roles are assigned at birth, it would be interesting to explore how children's book authors promote masculinity and femininity through the messages conveyed in their storytelling. Two books from different time periods, Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House in the Big Woods and J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, will be examined. Lorber would argue that in ... Though typically classified as children's fiction, Ingalls Wilder presents the books as a memoir of her own childhood; the books are written in third person, but the protagonist is a girl named Laura who has very specific memories of her young life traveling around the Midwest. In this situation, the nuclear family chooses to assert its individualism by leaving both their family and the newly crowded woods. The family continues its independent streak as Ma, Pa, Mary, Laura, and Baby Carrie construct their new house and lives on the Kansas prairie. They travel with only their most important belongings but, for the most part, must build an entirely new house and furnishings. This task, of course, is presented as incredibly easy. When the family finally arrives at an acceptable plot of land, the land is completely empty; however, Pa hauls logs from the creek bottoms and "all by himself, he built the house three logs high" (58). The family must also make all new furniture (luckily, Pa is a skilled carpenter), put in a puncheon floor, install a working fireplace and chimney, hunt for their own food, and trade furs in Independence to buy a plow for the next farming season. It does not however, provide much insight as to if the students are accomplishing objective two. Also, I do not think that there is enough class discussion about the contrast of roles of family members, historical fiction, and memoirs to gain much of an understanding about where the students are with their learning. The T–Chart assessment is well thought out. However, there is no rubric so it will be difficult for the students to remember and know what is expected of them. • 19. I Think Paul Exemplifies A Situational Leader I think Paul exemplifies a Situational Leader. He tailors his message to his audience (Northouse, 2016, 7th ed.), addressing Christians and non–believers. Paul uses the directing style when addressing Christians, and he models prayer (King James Version: Book of Colossians, 1). He uses the coaching style when approaching the born–again Christians, encouraging them to actively seek forgiveness (Book of Col., 1). Paul's toil in the establishment of the early Christian Church exemplifies his supporting style (Book of Col, 1). Finally, Paul demonstrates delegating style when he offers is Final Instructions (Book of Col., 4) to his followers. The communication used by a Situational Leader varies according to the style the Leader has to employ with his follower. The communication is focused on goal achievement when directing, while coaching and supporting tacks on encouragement to reach goals (Northouse). Proper communication is essential during these stages. However, communication is in the follower's court when the leader is delegating, as "[...] followers take responsibility for getting the job done the way they see fit (Northouse, p. 95–96). Critics in the media, even when they praise individual historical novels in their reviews, somehow manage to turn this praise into criticism of the genre as a whole. Although these shows may be relaxing and interesting, they can form negative views about the agriculture industry by how the producer orchestrates the program. When people watch a movie, they talk about how farming culture has enough farming specific mannerisms that other non– farming people will misunderstand when they see popular representations of it in modern culture. For example, glimpses of farm life on the internet and television can show how each gender plays a role in the agriculture industry. People think the only gender who can normal labor are the stereotypical "farmer boys." When in reality anyone can work in agriculture. The public perception of farming culture is outdated, as revealed by gender roles in the mainstream representation of agricultural living. When people think of the farming movies, a couple of generalizations come to their mind. The women are inside the house cooking meals, cleaning and putting everything in order, sending the kids off to school, and helping with their homework, as well as making a chore list for them to help the men out. The speaker is the narrator in a third person point of view. This represents the family's constant battle to survive against nature. This is significant because it sets up the main point of the plot for the entire book. She was born on February 7th 1876 and lived until age ninety. Wilder was the author of The Little House series the second book in the series is about her husband's experiences growing up on a farm in New York. The third book is about the time Wilder spent on the American Prairie. In these books, Wilder uses imagery, symbolism, and language from when she was growing up. One of the most common elements is Wilder's writing is imagery. She uses beautiful compilations of words to paint a picture in the minds of readers. An example of this is, "In a perfect circle the sky curved down to the level land and the wagon was in the circle's exact middle," (13). This is a description of how it looked when Wilder was traveling on the American Prairie. This quote could make you feel two different things, freedom and loneliness. At this point in time, Wilder and her family were probably feeling a mix of both. Later in the book, Wilder provides another example, Everything was striped there. Stripes of sunshine came through the cracks in the west wall, and stripes of shadow came down from the poles overhead. The stripes of shade and sunshine were all across Laura's bare feet. And through the cracks between the logs she could see stripes of prairie. The sweet smell of the prairie mixed with the sweet smell of cut wood. • 31. Manifest Destiny In Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House On... The level of entitlement involved in Manifest Destiny might be considered childish when boiled down to the brass ideas around why the Americans of the nineteenth century felt promised to connect The east coast to the west coast, but the way in which Wilder shows this infant demand for the entire continent seems almost puritan in nature. Through the innocent perspectives of Laura and her siblings, the reader of Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House on the Prairie," is presented with an edited first hand response to the dogmatism of manifest destiny by means of overcoming every obstacle ever so seamlessly and the confusion of why they are allowed to just settle the west under new ownership. This concept of the promised people, the American people, being blessed with God's grace of overcoming the odds of settling in this harsh environment is basically a predetermined mentality of inevitability set forth by the puritans that are the backbone of the society in the novel. This entire attitude can be outlined in the catch phrase of the entire novel: "All's well that ends well," (Ingalls 24). It doesn't matter if it's a flash flood, a pack of wolves, carbon monoxide, native americans or even wildfires, for the Ingalls, representing the western American settler culture as an ideal whole, the odds are in their favor, despite the harsh reality of the indifferent environment.
