The Walt Disney Effect
Thousands of books, documentaries, and television series' about Disneyland have flooded the market since its opening and have provided evidence that
would suggest the Disney Company to have created not only the first, but the most successful theme park in history. Walt Disney created a niche in
what was a dying industry leading to Disneyland's success that is still observed today as the most popular and most recognizable park in the park
entertainment industry. Although Disneyland was not the firstamusement park, Walt Disney did perfect the idea of an amusement park and give birth to
the first ever theme park which blossomed into the theme park industry. The influence Disneyland commands as the first theme park has impacted
American pop culture, society, economics, marketing, entertainment and tourism by creating what has been called the "Disney effect". This "Disney
effect" has been argued between historians, economist, and psychologists since Disneyland's opening in 1955.
How could one park cause such a drastic effect across a significant number of subjects? What made it different from other amusement parks to
provide such success that was never before seen? By exploring and analyzing work from Disney historians like Michael Barrier, Steven Watts, Alan
Bryman they provide Disney's historical insight which can be further analyzed and broken down by psychologist like Jackie Ogden, who works for
Disney studying guest experience, their work explores what makes Disneyland

Racism In Walt Disney
The mouse we all grew up to love and adore, Mickey Mouse, the face of the Walt Disney Corporation, has a racist past. Although he was initially
created to become a satirical character, he ended up as the face of racism as well. Sadly, not many are aware of Mickey Mouse's cartoon shorts,
Mickey's Mellerdrammer and The Opry House, which incorporate blackface in a minstrel and vaudeville show. Considering, that these films were
made in the early 1930s, it is not surprising that they contain racist ideals. Thus, this raises questions about Disney's past. It even makes me wonder if
this all started from the creator, Walt Disney, because many assume that "Walt Disney himself was a famous anti–Semite, and under his direction,
notoriously racist and sexist films were completed" (Dague 1). For instance, after the Mickey Mouse debacle, films, such as Pocahontas and Peter
Pan; contained racist characteristics. Ironically, Disney always reiterates the importance of teaching a moral lesson, so it is quite baffling that they
would have forms of racism and cultural appropriation in their films. Thus, the best thing that Disney could do to ramify their mistakes is remake
some of their older films. In a sense, they have a social responsibility to uphold because films, such as Aladdin, Pocahontas, and Peter Pan are still very
popular, even though they contain racist ideals. As a historically racist company their main goal should be about becoming more progressive. Although
they are on a

Walt Disney Struggles
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again! No entrepreneur becomes famous overnight. It takes years of hard work. Struggles. Difficulties. Some
give up; some persevere. But they aren't remembered for their mistakes. Who remembers that Steve Jobs dropped out of college? Or how Oprah
Winfrey lived in poverty as a child? They encountered struggles. But did they give up? No! They persevered. And so did Walter Elias Disney. Despite
his struggles early on, Walt Disney worked hard and became a famous entrepreneur who transformed the entertainment industry.
Discovering Disney's Talents

Soon, Disney began to produce short animations for local businesses. The young man worked at Kansas City Art Studio on the animation team. There
he learned cut–out animation and began to experiment with different forms of animation at home (Walt Disney Biography). The aspiring cartoonist
discovered that celluloid animation, which is animation by hand drawn characters on transparent paper, was much more efficient than the current
animation being used. However, he was unable to persuade his boss about its effectiveness, so Disney quit the job (Walt Disney Wikipedia). Next, Walt
Disney started his own company of cartoons, called "Laugh–O–Grams". Focusing mostly on short animations, Disney produced six short films within a
short time of the company starting up. The nineteen–year–old was startled by his success and kept on producing animations, combining fairy tales with
modern events. However, the company didn't make enough money by itself so the man found a side job to earn more income. Soon Disney began
working on Alice In Wonderland, which combined live action with animation. The twelve–minute film was released in 1923. Sadly, the money came
too late. Laugh–O–Grams went bankrupt, so the lad packed up and moved to Hollywood that same year. There he partnered with his brother, Roy, and
the Disney Brother's Studio was born on October 16, 1923. The creative brothers invented a new character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, and began
producing short films about the loveable character (Walt Disney– Producer, Entrepreneur). In 1925, Disney married the love of his life, Lillian Bounds,
who also happened to be a newly hired employee at Disney's studio. After starting up his own company and getting married, Disney continued to
produce short animations, and success was on its way, or so he hoped. Sadly, just a few years after the creation of

Walt Disney
Walt Disney. I remember the first time I saw that name. I may not know the day or the time but I remember the place. I was at home watching "Snow

soon enough. A week later our bags were packed my mom, dad we 're off to show me who Disney was. I realized who he was when I first stepped

Soon came their first child Diane Marie Disney on December 18, 1933. Three years later they adopted their second daughter Sharon Disney in
December 1936. They loved having two daughters running around, dressing up, and having fun. Sometimes Roy and his family would come over
and grill out and make forts on the back yard with chairs, sheets, and pillows. Walt got the idea to make an amusement park for families. He would
call it Disneyland; he got the inspiration of the design of the park from his trip to a park in the "Tivoli" park in Denmark. Disneyland costed $17
million, and opened in 1955. The opening was a disaster, it was too hot, and people were not enjoying their time because of the extreme heat.
When Walt was making the Jungle Book, was when he started to have health problems. He found out he had lung cancer, from smoking all the

Walt Disney Biography Essay
Throughout history, there have been many notable American figures that had enormous impacts on almost everyone's daily lives. Although, one figure
stands out among many, and that man worked his hardest to make his dreams come true, Walt Disney. Disney made a reputation of brilliance and
"[t]he combination of Disney's desire to try new techniques and his striving to make a better product set him apart from most other animators" (Nardo
25). How could anyone forget classics like Mickey Mouse, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Fox and the Hound, the Little Mermaid, and many
more all created by Disney? "He created a cast of memorable animated and live–action characters that have been forever associated with the Disney
name" (Nardo 10). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Disney was 16, his brother Roy decided to fight in World War I. He was too young to also join, but he still wanted to be close to his brother.
"So when he heard that ambulance drivers for the Red Cross needed to be only seventeen, he changed his birth date on his birth certificate and
managed to enlist" (Nardo 18). He spent most of his time in France, where he would draw all over his ambulance and draw fake medals on his
friends' jackets. In 1919, with the war over, he returned back to the United States, as he now knew what his true passion in life was, art.
Disney searched for a job with the love of art on his mind. He landed a job as an apprentice illustrator for an agency and while there he met Ub
Iwerks. Disney quickly mastered simple techniques and was soon bored with the basics. "With the goal of making his own cartoon shorts and
attempting to get local theaters to show them, he borrowed a camera, and he and Iwerks began doing their own animation at night" (Nardo 20). Disney
and Iwerks put in long hours on their cartoons and precision. "Most young aspiring animators usually tried to play it safe with uncomplicated, familiar
material, but ambitious Disney wanted to attempt something more challenging" (Nardo 20).
On his own, Disney set up and opened his own studio. His business began to grow and along with it so did

Walt Disney Recession
It would be true to say that the Walt Disney Company receives large amounts of its money from the resort and theme park subsidiaries. With the effects
of the great recession Walt Disney Company stated that its second–quarter net income from 2009 fell 46 percent, hauled down by failing movie releases
and the impact of the recession on its theme parks. With attendance levels at similar levels from prior years it was due to the fact that fewer guests
had excess spending cash to use, and also reduced the amount of income from merchandising. As a way to fight the recession ticket prices steadily
increased after the recession and due to the inflation of ticket prices less and less people were attending parks causing the Walt Disney Company as a
whole to loss great amounts of profits. (Adam Kasi, Jan 29, 2016 freepestelanalysis.com) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

I believe this little ordeal made Walt realize his passion and creativity in art, and interest in setting the bar high for the rest of his life. Immediately
after, Walt's interest in the arts made his determination unveil, for the second time Walt beat his disability, Walt set a goal for himself. Walt's
triumph against his disability caused him to peruse and follow through with his passion for art. Walt's goal was eventually reached, when he got
the acceptance letter in the mail to attend McKinley High School in Chicago, studying art and photography. I feel personally that doing something
of such importance like overcoming a disability even if only two minor times, but in Walt's case, two major times would set incentive for me to
always try as hard as I could and be determined to do what I wanted to, and so did Walt. At the end of Walt's high school glory days Walt in his third
feat of defeating dyslexia set a goal and was determined to reach it. The goal was to serve his country. At first Walt enlisted to the military to serve,

Walt Disney Accomplishments
Walt Disney "If you can dream it, you can do it" (Brainy). Walt Disney certainly was a dreamer, but he turned his dreams into a reality. Walt Disney
was an inspiring man who "set the standard" of the cartoon–animation industry. He did not have an easy start in his early years of childhood, and he did
not just keep 'climbing the ladder' in the cartoon industry, but his trials and hardships led to the many accomplishments attached to his name. His work
not only affected those of his lifetime, but is still impacting the lives, both young and old, to this day. On the 5th of December in 1901, Walter Elias

But one of the most well–known creations of Disney's work is Mickey Mouse. Mickey Mouse was created quickly after rights to Oswald were stolen
(Biography). Walt Disney once said, "Mickey Mouse is, to me, a symbol of independence. He was a means to an end" (Brainy). Mickey Mouse did,
in fact, have a rough start, but pulled through during Walt's time of trouble. In the beginning of the animation stages, two silents shorts were made
for Mickey Mouse, but failed to get a start. After two shorts were down the drain, Disney created a third, but he added sound this time. As Walt
being the voice of Mickey, the new short, Steamboat Willie, quickly rose in popularity. Disney created Silly Symphonies in 1929 as an addition to
Mickey Mouse, including a variety of Mickey's friends. At the end of the year in 1937, Disney put another page in the history books. He released the
first full–length animation, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Over the following years, more full–length animations of Disney's were created and
released, including: Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, and Bambi. In 1939, the new "Walt Disney Studios" in Burbank opened, but they hit a bit of a
rough patch. It would essentially be years before the studio fully recovered from this time of trouble (Biography). During World War II, Disney's
studio created educational films for the government. After the war, however, Disney's movie creations started to decrease in number (Smith). In the
year 1949, Disney released animation shorts that would be grouped together in "package features", but by 1950, he was back to creating full–length
animated movies again. In the 1950s and early 60s, Disney released Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty,
and 101 Dalmatians. Disney also went on to create animated shorts that were shown on television. His final hit was Mary Poppins, which was both

Peet described Walt as a man of many faces. He could be on the highest of spirits one day and in the lowest of spirits the very next, and you never
could tell just which

The success of Snow White, in combination with Walt receiving an honorary academy award in 1939, led to the production of other full–length movies
such as,
Pinnochio, Fantasia, and the classic tale of Bambi. Disney's studios also took in earnings from smaller, less–notable wildlife films in the late 30's and
early 40's. In 1950 however
Disney's studios began experimenting with a new medium: live–action video, which they used to produce the movie, Treasure Island, in 1950, the
success of which led to the even more successful, and possibly the most beloved live–action Disney film of all time, Mary
Poppins (Gale Group).
In creating Mary Poppins, Disney's studios used state of the art special effects technology, including bluescreen, still a popular method of adjusting and
changing backgrounds today. The film was for the most part a musical, and heavily sentimental, which is probably why it was as successful as it was.
Disney was a master at plucking the heartstrings of his audience, young and old. (Hahn, Don)

The result was Mickey Mouse. When Mickey failed to elicit much interest, Walt tried to attract a distributor by adding synchronized sound–something
that had 8,9 never been attempted in a cartoon. His gamble paid off handsomely with the release of Steamboat 10 Willie in 1928. Overnight, Mickey
Mouse became an international sensation known variously as "Topolino" (Italy), "Raton Mickey" (Spain), and "Musse Pigg" (Sweden). However, the
company was still strapped for cash, so it licensed Mickey Mouse for the cover of a pencil tablet–the first of many such licensing agreements. Over
time, as short–term cash problems subsided, Disney began to worry 11 about brand equity and thus licensed its name only to "the best companies." The
Disney brothers ran their company as a flat, non–hierarchical organization, in which everyone, including Walt, used their first names and no one had
titles. "You don't have to have a title," said 12 Walt. "If you're important to the company, you'll know it." Although a taskmaster driven to achieve
creativity and quality, Walt emphasized teamwork, communication, and cooperation. He pushed 13 himself and his staff so hard that he suffered a

in Hollywood. If their business were successful, it would be the first studio in the city strictly for producing animation. Walt and Roy got their studio
up and moving within a few weeks and hired several animators. They first produced a mini–series called Alice that played in the previews of movie
theatres, but they knew it wouldn't compare to Felix the Cat. Walt felt something was missing at their studio and realized a need for a master
animator. Walt quickly called upon his old friend, Ubbe Iwerks. Ubbe was convinced and headed straight to Hollywood. With Walt creating stories,
Ubbe producing spectacular animation and Roy taking care of finances they had a perfect formula.
Walt often worked late at night. "Mice gathered in my wastebasket when I worked late at night. I lifted them out and kept them in little cages on
my desk. One of them was my particular friend." (Disney qtd. in Fanning, 53) Walt first drew the mouse up late at night and named it
"Mortimer," but Roy was not fond of this name. However Walt was too stubborn to change it. Roy talked to Walt's wife, Lillian, and she
eventually got him to change it after days of pleading. In fact, it was Lillian who ultimately named the mouse "Mickey."
They first put Mickey in the short animation called, Plane

Walt Disney Conflicts
Jones (2013) states that organizational conflict is the clash that occurs when the goal–directed behavior of one group blocks or thwarts the goals of
another (p. 391). In the case study Politics at Walt Disney the CEO Eisner began losing favor with the company when the firm's performance began
to fall. Despite having handpicked a majority of the board members Eisner could not deny the company's loss of performance. Pondy (as cited by
Jones, 2013) developed a model of organizational conflict which lists five sources of conflict in stages. In stage one latent conflict is described as not
having any direct obvious conflicts; however disparities and divisional differences are apparent. Stage two perceived conflict occurs when another
division believes their goals are being restrained by another section. Stage three felt conflict each section begin harboring direct resentment against each
other. Stage four manifest conflict happen when each section exhibits some form of retaliation against the other department. Finally, stage five conflict
aftermath happens when the conflict has been resolved, but more often than not the conflict arises again. "All the members of the top–management
team are corporate managers, whose responsibility is to set strategy for the corporation" (Jones, 2013, p. 40). The various sources of conflict and
politics that plagues Walt Disney in the past were in operating under his agenda instead of for the company and its shareholders. Eisner

Walt Disney Controversy
Walt Disney was well known for being a patriarch in the animation industry. His employees, numbering 800+, were the most experienced and well
paid in the whole field. Just less than a decade earlier, Walt and his studio had struck gold with the success of the first ever full–length animated
feature film, Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. The film had become, at the time, the most successful sound movie ever. Walt had decided to take a
large sum of the profit from Snow White and use it to finance a new animation studio located in Burbank, California – the same studio that Disney
operates out of today. Profits were also used to fund new ventures into the largely undiscovered world of animation and stereophonic sound. However,

Many benefits were also axed at the new studio – regular employees could no longer access the gymnasium, steam room, restaurant, and other luxuries

International growth/ New Market Disney has an opportunity to expand its movie production to such countries as India or China, where movie
production industries have developed good quality infrastructure. This would result in lower movie production costs and more localized movies for
India and China's markets. Changes in technology and consumer consumption The company that stays on abreast of the rapid pace of technology
change achieves higher advantage. With new media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, it seems that the company that best takes advantage of
these forums is at the forefront of pop culture–right where an entertainment corporation would hope to be. B. External Threats Economic recession A
major threat to Disney's success is the current market stagnation, as consumers do not have money to spend on Disney's products and vacations.
Changes in technology and consumer consumption The rate at which media and technology has changed in the last in the last 15 years is
unprecedented. Since widespread availability of the Internet occurred in the late 1990s, media and technological advances have bred more media and
technological advances. While that is wonderful news for the consumer, it leaves companies struggling to stay on top of changes occurring at an almost
daily rate–so much so that often time technological departments have been bolstered just to keep organizations competitive on the online. Intellectual

The Walt Disney Corporation was founded in 1923 under the name Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio by brothers Walt and Roy Disney. The company
brandished its current name in 1986 after the death of Walt Disney (1). This company like other large conglomerates has a vice grip on the flow of
information that reaches consumers like you and me. Some people believe that having these corporations constricting our access to information leads
to a generation of uninformed people, but in the day and age when anybody can get onto to google and search with specific enough criteria to find
articles proving any stand point... they were going to be uninformed any way. For example, there are people out there who believe vaccines cause

Walt Disney : The Disney
Walt Disney is famous for his animated movies through the 20th century. It all started in the 1920s with a series Walt Disney directed consisting of
seven fairy tales. Walt Disney is most famously known for his character Mickey Mouse, which appears first in Steamboat Willie, in 1928. It was the
first Disney cartoon to be produced with synchronized sound. From this, an empire was created. The Walt Disney Company still produces cartoons to
this day, but how did we get to the movies children watch today, such as Toy Story, Monsters Inc, and Frozen?
In 1937, Snow White and the Seven Drawfs was released. This was two years before World War II began, and at the end of the Great Depression.
People were watching television and movies to escape reality, so fairy tale cartoons were enjoyed by adults and children alike. Walt Disney
experimented with ground–breaking technology, producing Snow White as one of the first technicolor films and the first full length Disney feature,
according to a review written by Roger Ebert. Disney also experimented with the multiplane camera, which gave the illusion of a scene being
three–dimensional by placing multiple levels of drawing on top of one another, and moving them. Until computer animations came along, this was a
trick used in many animated movies. The story of Snow White sets the stage for most future Disney princess movies. There is a princess, or a
princess–to–be, waiting for the man of her dreams to come and save and eventually marry her.

themed stores, first opened in 1987. To this day, the Company continues to utilize the recognition and popularity of its brands and characters to increase

In 1940, Walt Disney Productions become a publicly traded company and issued its first stock. However, after years of effort to create a
successful production studio, Walt Disney is said to have still been unsatisfied with the companies' achievements ("A History," 2000). Against the
advice and reservations of others, he developed an idea for a "theme park" like no other ("A History," 2000). Disneyland opened in 1955 in
Anaheim California, and what some believed to be "Walt's folly" became a lucrative and prosperous part of the company ("A History," 2000). Walt
Disney believed "Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world" and his ideals continue
to be followed (Disney, 1999). Today, the

Walt Disney's first animated film was Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs in 1937. Over the years Walt Disney came out with family friendly movies
such as, Sleeping Beauty (1959), Pocahontas (1995), Aladdin (1992), and Cinderella (1950). Walt Disney influenced many people in many ways with

A moment of nostalgia may set in if you think back to your early childhood. Most of us have a favorite cartoon and chances are it's probably one
created by Walt Disney. A man from humble beginnings, grew to be one of the most influential entrepreneurs in film history. Early life for Disney
was a bit complicated he dropped out of high school at the age of 16. He wanted to join the army during WW1 but due to his age he was rejected,
Walt was able to serve in the Red Cross Ambulance Corps after he forged his age to 17. "Walt's actual birth year reflected, 1901, would still keep him
from the Ambulance Corps so Walt himself, determined to go, changed it to 1900. On September 16, 1918, he enlisted."(waltdisney.org) After serving
ten months he was home. Its a good thing he didn't meet his demise in the war. The world would certainly have been a little less magical. Fortunately,

Walt Disney Essay
The Walt Disney Company has come a long way since Steamboat Willie where, the iconic face representing the brand, Mickey Mouse appeared in
1928 (Telotte, 2008). Walt Disney theme parks and the iconic mouse were accessible only in America for 28 years; more specifically, in California and
Florida (Ferrell, O., Hirt, & Ferrell, L., 2009). Mickey Mouse, who is "arguably known by more people around the world than any other American"
(Eisner, 1995, n.p.) brought fans and tourists from all over the world to visit the "happiest place on earth" (Ferrell, O., Hirt, & Ferrell, L., 2009, p.
112). Naturally, the clever minds behind the success of the of theWalt Disney company theme parks recognized the draw from a global perspective,
which led to the assumption its theme parks would be successful internationally. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Planning in a global economy requires businesspeople to understand the economic, legal, political, and sociocultural realities of the country in
which they will operate" (Ferrell, O., Hirt, & Ferrell, L., 2009, p. 106). There is an inherent need to focus and develop an international strategy
prior to a leap for "leaping" sake. Simply assuming a business will do well elsewhere because of the level of success in its home court, is not
enough for true globalization efforts. The company learned it could not impose the American way of operations and facilities on another culture
(Ferrell, O., Hirt, & Ferrell, L., 2009). Despite, those loyal fans that traveled to America to visit the parks, an understanding of the culture is
imperative for success, as it illustrates a respect for their way of living. There is no brand that can cross barriers without modifications to fit the culture
of which it will exist, not even the famous Mickey

The Walt Disney Effect

  • 1. The Walt Disney Effect Thousands of books, documentaries, and television series' about Disneyland have flooded the market since its opening and have provided evidence that would suggest the Disney Company to have created not only the first, but the most successful theme park in history. Walt Disney created a niche in what was a dying industry leading to Disneyland's success that is still observed today as the most popular and most recognizable park in the park entertainment industry. Although Disneyland was not the firstamusement park, Walt Disney did perfect the idea of an amusement park and give birth to the first ever theme park which blossomed into the theme park industry. The influence Disneyland commands as the first theme park has impacted American pop culture, society, economics, marketing, entertainment and tourism by creating what has been called the "Disney effect". This "Disney effect" has been argued between historians, economist, and psychologists since Disneyland's opening in 1955. How could one park cause such a drastic effect across a significant number of subjects? What made it different from other amusement parks to provide such success that was never before seen? By exploring and analyzing work from Disney historians like Michael Barrier, Steven Watts, Alan Bryman they provide Disney's historical insight which can be further analyzed and broken down by psychologist like Jackie Ogden, who works for Disney studying guest experience, their work explores what makes Disneyland ... • 3. Racism In Walt Disney The mouse we all grew up to love and adore, Mickey Mouse, the face of the Walt Disney Corporation, has a racist past. Although he was initially created to become a satirical character, he ended up as the face of racism as well. Sadly, not many are aware of Mickey Mouse's cartoon shorts, Mickey's Mellerdrammer and The Opry House, which incorporate blackface in a minstrel and vaudeville show. Considering, that these films were made in the early 1930s, it is not surprising that they contain racist ideals. Thus, this raises questions about Disney's past. It even makes me wonder if this all started from the creator, Walt Disney, because many assume that "Walt Disney himself was a famous anti–Semite, and under his direction, notoriously racist and sexist films were completed" (Dague 1). For instance, after the Mickey Mouse debacle, films, such as Pocahontas and Peter Pan; contained racist characteristics. Ironically, Disney always reiterates the importance of teaching a moral lesson, so it is quite baffling that they would have forms of racism and cultural appropriation in their films. Thus, the best thing that Disney could do to ramify their mistakes is remake some of their older films. In a sense, they have a social responsibility to uphold because films, such as Aladdin, Pocahontas, and Peter Pan are still very popular, even though they contain racist ideals. As a historically racist company their main goal should be about becoming more progressive. Although they are on a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some give up; some persevere. But they aren't remembered for their mistakes. Who remembers that Steve Jobs dropped out of college? Or how Oprah Winfrey lived in poverty as a child? They encountered struggles. But did they give up? No! They persevered. And so did Walter Elias Disney. Despite his struggles early on, Walt Disney worked hard and became a famous entrepreneur who transformed the entertainment industry. Discovering Disney's Talents During his childhood, Disney worked hard at whatever he did. The boy had a true talent in drawing, which he worked hard to develop from a young age. At the age ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Soon, Disney began to produce short animations for local businesses. The young man worked at Kansas City Art Studio on the animation team. There he learned cut–out animation and began to experiment with different forms of animation at home (Walt Disney Biography). The aspiring cartoonist discovered that celluloid animation, which is animation by hand drawn characters on transparent paper, was much more efficient than the current animation being used. However, he was unable to persuade his boss about its effectiveness, so Disney quit the job (Walt Disney Wikipedia). Next, Walt Disney started his own company of cartoons, called "Laugh–O–Grams". Focusing mostly on short animations, Disney produced six short films within a short time of the company starting up. The nineteen–year–old was startled by his success and kept on producing animations, combining fairy tales with modern events. However, the company didn't make enough money by itself so the man found a side job to earn more income. Soon Disney began working on Alice In Wonderland, which combined live action with animation. The twelve–minute film was released in 1923. Sadly, the money came too late. Laugh–O–Grams went bankrupt, so the lad packed up and moved to Hollywood that same year. There he partnered with his brother, Roy, and the Disney Brother's Studio was born on October 16, 1923. The creative brothers invented a new character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, and began producing short films about the loveable character (Walt Disney– Producer, Entrepreneur). In 1925, Disney married the love of his life, Lillian Bounds, who also happened to be a newly hired employee at Disney's studio. After starting up his own company and getting married, Disney continued to produce short animations, and success was on its way, or so he hoped. Sadly, just a few years after the creation of ... Although, one figure stands out among many, and that man worked his hardest to make his dreams come true, Walt Disney. Disney made a reputation of brilliance and "[t]he combination of Disney's desire to try new techniques and his striving to make a better product set him apart from most other animators" (Nardo 25). "So when he heard that ambulance drivers for the Red Cross needed to be only seventeen, he changed his birth date on his birth certificate and managed to enlist" (Nardo 18). He spent most of his time in France, where he would draw all over his ambulance and draw fake medals on his friends' jackets. In 1919, with the war over, he returned back to the United States, as he now knew what his true passion in life was, art. Disney searched for a job with the love of art on his mind. He landed a job as an apprentice illustrator for an agency and while there he met Ub Iwerks. Disney quickly mastered simple techniques and was soon bored with the basics. "With the goal of making his own cartoon shorts and attempting to get local theaters to show them, he borrowed a camera, and he and Iwerks began doing their own animation at night" (Nardo 20). Disney and Iwerks put in long hours on their cartoons and precision. "Most young aspiring animators usually tried to play it safe with uncomplicated, familiar material, but ambitious Disney wanted to attempt something more challenging" (Nardo 20). With the effects of the great recession Walt Disney Company stated that its second–quarter net income from 2009 fell 46 percent, hauled down by failing movie releases and the impact of the recession on its theme parks. With attendance levels at similar levels from prior years it was due to the fact that fewer guests had excess spending cash to use, and also reduced the amount of income from merchandising. As a way to fight the recession ticket prices steadily increased after the recession and due to the inflation of ticket prices less and less people were attending parks causing the Walt Disney Company as a whole to loss great amounts of profits. Walt Disney was an inspiring man who "set the standard" of the cartoon–animation industry. He did not have an easy start in his early years of childhood, and he did not just keep 'climbing the ladder' in the cartoon industry, but his trials and hardships led to the many accomplishments attached to his name. His work not only affected those of his lifetime, but is still impacting the lives, both young and old, to this day. Walt Disney once said, "Mickey Mouse is, to me, a symbol of independence. He was a means to an end" (Brainy). Mickey Mouse did, in fact, have a rough start, but pulled through during Walt's time of trouble. In the beginning of the animation stages, two silents shorts were made for Mickey Mouse, but failed to get a start. After two shorts were down the drain, Disney created a third, but he added sound this time. As Walt being the voice of Mickey, the new short, Steamboat Willie, quickly rose in popularity. Disney created Silly Symphonies in 1929 as an addition to Mickey Mouse, including a variety of Mickey's friends. At the end of the year in 1937, Disney put another page in the history books. He released the first full–length animation, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Over the following years, more full–length animations of Disney's were created and released, including: Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, and Bambi. In 1939, the new "Walt Disney Studios" in Burbank opened, but they hit a bit of a rough patch. It would essentially be years before the studio fully recovered from this time of trouble (Biography). During World War II, Disney's studio created educational films for the government. After the war, however, Disney's movie creations started to decrease in number (Smith). In the year 1949, Disney released animation shorts that would be grouped together in "package features", but by 1950, he was back to creating full–length animated movies again. In the 1950s and early 60s, Disney released Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, and 101 Dalmatians. Disney's studios also took in earnings from smaller, less–notable wildlife films in the late 30's and early 40's. In 1950 however Disney's studios began experimenting with a new medium: live–action video, which they used to produce the movie, Treasure Island, in 1950, the success of which led to the even more successful, and possibly the most beloved live–action Disney film of all time, Mary Poppins (Gale Group). In creating Mary Poppins, Disney's studios used state of the art special effects technology, including bluescreen, still a popular method of adjusting and changing backgrounds today. It all started in the 1920s with a series Walt Disney directed consisting of seven fairy tales. Walt Disney is most famously known for his character Mickey Mouse, which appears first in Steamboat Willie, in 1928. It was the first Disney cartoon to be produced with synchronized sound. From this, an empire was created. The Walt Disney Company still produces cartoons to this day, but how did we get to the movies children watch today, such as Toy Story, Monsters Inc, and Frozen? In 1937, Snow White and the Seven Drawfs was released. This was two years before World War II began, and at the end of the Great Depression. People were watching television and movies to escape reality, so fairy tale cartoons were enjoyed by adults and children alike. Walt Disney experimented with ground–breaking technology, producing Snow White as one of the first technicolor films and the first full length Disney feature, according to a review written by Roger Ebert. Disney also experimented with the multiplane camera, which gave the illusion of a scene being three–dimensional by placing multiple levels of drawing on top of one another, and moving them. Until computer animations came along, this was a trick used in many animated movies. The story of Snow White sets the stage for most future Disney princess movies.
