12. Micro Features
• Performance – a new concept
• The way in which the actors play their roles
and the way they interact with each other.
• Can be made up of aspects like body position,
body language, movement, use of voice,
delivery of dialogue, body posture, gestures
etc
13. Key Concepts
• Identifying how micro features ‘construct
meanings and contribute to the sensory
impact of film.’
• Reflecting on your individual response to
micro features of films
• Exploring the relationship between the film
and spectator
• Develop an awareness of how you as a
spectator have an active role in film viewing
14. The Assessment
• An analysis of a film extract – 1500 words
• You are required to explore how one or more
micro elements construct meaning and
provoke response in a film extract
• You are encouraged to support your work will
illustrative visual material.
• You can choose any film BUT make it a good
one
• The extract should be about 3-5 mins long
16. What do you already know?
• Watch the follow film extract paying close
attention to the micro elements we have just
been discussing.
• Choose 1-2 examples for each of the 5 micro
element and explain how it is used in the film
and what effect it creates.
Editor's Notes
Explain in general terms that what directors use certain techniques to envoke a certain response in their audience
How do you respond to these pictures? How do you feel about the people pictured and/or the location? How is this feeling created?
Stimulate discussion around things like Mise en scene (setting, props, cotume facial expressions shot, make up), Cinematography (camera position, colour lighting, framing etc)

Do the first one on the board as a class. Do the rest on paper and students walk around and make comments

NOTE that are some differences from the way OCR GSCE grouped elements. In the Spec it lists these as some examples
Photographic elements (eg camera position, colour, lens, depth of focus), Lighting, framing and composition, and special effects
Let them know that there will be quite a lot of new terminology here but for now see what the know/remember
Basically picking apart an extract from a film to demonstrate that they understand micro elements and the effect they have one the audience.
