Compound subjects function like plural subjects

Be aware that the subject and the verb are sometimes
separated by interrupting phrases that make
agreement a challenge.
The gift that was given to all the audience members was
well-received .
The first day of classes is hectic.
6. Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement
The new student at Gilford School for Boys must
remember to bring his calculator to math class.
The new student at Thistewaite Academy must
remember to bring his or her textbooks to class.
New students often lose their way in a new school
building.
