The sun rose at six but the night lingered, needy and obsessed like an abandoned lover hanging
around the old places. Veronique lay on the roof of Villa Maldorme, on a white bedspread. Last
night, she had a near overdose. For many hours she lay on the roof, floating in a blue, deflated world
until the gentle gurgling of the morning's transfusion woke her. The arteries of the sky, which only a
few hours before unwilling poured their blood into the vague, moody sea, were not being refilled,
slowly swelling with light pumped from the luminous water. A gull lunged towards Veronique with a
homicidal screech. She covered her head but was only brushed by the gull's vulture–shadow.

"It didn't start. It happened over a few days." "When?" "Last year." "Was it ... triggered by
something or just ..." "It happened after my father had an accident." "Did he ..." "Yes." The
simplicity and flatness of this one word wounded her. She wanted to get up and walk out, slam the
door in his shocked and uncomprehending face, be alone for a long time, for the rest of the time. But
which time and when would it end? She couldn't talk about her father to a virtual stranger, even if he
was her traveling companion. One word, unchangeable, and so brutally, callously casual. Yes. He
could've asked her if she'd had breakfast. If she'd ever sky–dived. The faded plush curtains of the
myth–making years parted. The Aegean light revealed a place she recognised in a way she would
recognise a blurry face in the background of a forgotten photograph. The harbour of Thessaloniki
from which the stink of sewage rose when the vardari, the northern wind, pierced the city. The
warm–faced people dishevelled by the vardhini. The now deserted, windswept, unbearable beaches
of Halkidiki. Everywhere, she had to stop herself from looking for the tall, stooped, bald silhouette,

Rain. That's the one thing I heard. It was only making the situation worse. It seemed as if the world
was grieving as well. The trees really did seem like weeping willows. The sky was as cloudy as my
heart, not letting a single ray of light out. The wind sounding like spirits having cries of their own. It
was all, just so, depressing. Seeing the situation only made me start a storm of my own. As the tears
trickled down my cheek, soon forming into niagara falls. My tears came gushing down, the paleness
of my mom's face, deflated my soul, only leaving the negative emotions and the realization that he

I told myself, "It'll be alright," I told myself, "everything is going to be okay." But buried at the back
of my mind, there was a thundering voice screaming, "You know what's going to happen." A phone
call saved me from overthinking the possibility. Staring at the phone, the bold white letters, spelling
out my signal. "Mama! Is everything okay?" I didn't have to see her to know how she felt, the
silence, followed by sobbs shrieked millions of words. "Mija, he's, he's, gone, dead. I felt faint at the
thought of it being the truth. It's not possible, not so soon! "I'm sorry mija, but this is reality." Those
words, this is reality, confirmed it: he really is gone.
I felt the truth come back and smack me in the face. The white roses, above the polished coffin, only
bringing back those tender, sweet memories I have with him. His smile, now diminishing from
existence. His eyes enough to express thousands of thoughts in a blink, now eternally silenced. Then
his voice, reminding me that I am safe in his arms, sheltering me from harm, now unable to help me
at a time like this. But, in the end, I hope to treasure his tender love, though at this moment, I'll just

The Role Of The Gods In Oedipus The King By Sophocles

Unfortunately, to her disbelief, she is just perpetuating the problem. Jocasta believes that she can
take the world into her own hands and prevent the awful tragedy that is her son killing her husband,
King Laius, as well as sleeping with and bearing children with her murderous son. To prevent that
awful occurrence from happening, she and King Laius bind the child up when he is just three days
old and leave him to die on the side of a mountain so there is absolutely no chance of the prophecy
being completed; however, she is greatly mistaken. She says feeling confident in her preventative
measures, "...So in this case Apollo's purpose failed...so much for oracles that map our future..."
(Sophocles 29). Jocasta believes at that point in the selection that she has thwarted the prophecy of
the gods. However, she later realizes that even though she takes precautionary measures to prevent
that occurrence from ever happening, she is not greater than the gods. This is purely another
example of the gods being sovereign rulers of the people of Thebes. In addition, the gods make sure
the prophecy comes true and Oedipus commits the awful acts that he is destined to perform.
Because of this, the gods remain victorious and in complete power over her life, her son's, and the
events that occur within

Painting Analysis : Cafe Terrace At Night, Van Gogh
One of the most important observations anyone could make while viewing a painting is the artist's
delicate choice and use of colors. In paintings, colors serve two different but equally important
purposes. One purpose is to draw attention to the painting, while the other purpose is to display
emotions. An artist that understood the importance of color in paintings extremely well was the late
talented Vincent Van Gogh. In his painting Café Terrace at Night, Van Gogh incorporates a vast
array of colors to arouse emotions from within the audience. In order to assess which colors aroused
which emotions two important questions must be answered. What emotions do the specific colors
used within the painting give off to the audience? How have the emotions behind the colors been
learned through normal human experience over time?
Most colors within the visible light spectrum hold specific emotions that are conveyed to individuals
by artists through their pieces of art. Van Gogh carefully incorporated both vibrant and dark colors
in his iconic painting Café Terrace at Night, of which span across a vast array of emotions. One of
the colors that stand out when you first observe the painting is the vibrant yellow used for the
exterior of the café. The color yellow is known within the art community as a cheerful and warm
color, helping the café to come across as an inviting gathering place to the individuals observing the
painting. Another color that Van Gogh used which quickly grabs

The Kite Runner Analysis
Amir's merciless encounter with his childhood enemy Assef and Hassan's rape relates to the
violence of the islamic revolution and chaos of Afghanistan, which illustrates the importance of the
past, the feeling of guilt and the redemption for one's past sins.
Khaled Hosseini regained control of the beauty of Afghanistan, especially the city of Kabul, in his
novel The Kite Runner. He narrates the turbulent journey of a man named Amir, who is haunted by
his past and the ghosts of his sins. The novel is not just the history of Afghanistan before the Taliban
took over, but it is also the story of redemption. Throughout the novel, Hosseini explores important

Violence, in general, is known to be severe and cruel, and language dictionaries meet as a harsher
expression aimed at reform and deterrence, violence against compassion, violence in a harsh sense,
violence and its cruelty, and a severe denial of its action in order to change, reform and deter. And
the intensity without tenderness and softness. The concept of violence in terms of terminology is
consistent with what the term is defined in the language, and it has been shown to show the
accompanying situation and diversity, as it is the strongest statement, the extreme action, the strong
opinion, it is the extract of the words, deeds, and conditions, and the show of severity and cruelty in
it, and from different types and manifestations such as violence. Any behavior that leads to our aims

Sheltering Sky versus Blood Meridian Essay
Extreme circumstances bring about substantial changes in people. At least that is what Paul Bowles
and Cormac McCarthy seem to be saying in the writing of their respective books, The Sheltering
Sky and Blood Meridian. Both authors place their characters in difficult locations, dealing with
difficult people and expect them to emerge changed, for better or for worse. In The Sheltering Sky,
Bowles takes his American trio and places them in the desert lands of the African continent where
the wide, dry impossibly desolate terrain takes its toll on their minds and bodies. Likewise,
McCarthy takes his ragged bunch of marauders, most prominently the Kid, and has them wandering
the massive expanse of the untamed west. This convention of forced ... Show more content on

Both parties chance upon characters, both eccentric and dangerous, and all involved seem to get
themselves into the most impossible situations imaginable. Apparently the point Bowles and
McCarthy are trying to convey to the reader is that great change and substantial inner growth can
only come about through intense emotional stress and physical challenge.
Kit, in The Sheltering Sky, learns some very interesting things about herself through the course of
our travels with her. She starts out as Port's wife, a secondary character of sorts, afraid to voice her
opinions on virtually everything. We have the inside track on her thought s and feelings though, and
are privy to the fact that she is unhappy not only with her situation and current location, but also
with her marriage and identity. We get our first glimpse of her realization of these problems on her
train ride with Tunner, as Port is traveling with the Lyles. Her spontaneous affair with Tunner is a
symptom of her unhappiness and is the beginning of a downward spiral that takes her to the brink of
insanity and far beyond. We see the beginning of her growth in her encounter in the Fourth Class
cabin of the train when see comes in close contact with the miserable peasant folk and she realizes
that aside from their cultural differences she is no better than these simple folk and in some ways
she is far worse. As her story progresses we, the reader, get to see the progress of her downfall due

Break Day In The Trenches
The Western Front in World War One was a bleak place for soldiers. Men died from bullets,
shrapnel, concussive blasts, gas, disease, dehydration, trench foot, and exposure. The life expectancy
in the trenches was only six weeks (War History Online). In "Break Day in the Trenches", Isaac
Rosenberg documents the feelings of a sentry at dawn. The sentry watches the sun begin to rise and
plucks a poppy to put behind his ear. He watches a rat and internally converses with it, before
coming under attack by an artillery barrage. In "Break Day in the Trenches", Isaac Rosenberg uses
symbols of poppies and rats to support an implicit claim that death is always nearby on the front
lines. In the first line of the poem, Rosenberg evokes imagery of death, writing, "The darkness
crumbles away". Darkness and death have been conjoined in human consciousness since the
beginning of time, and the use of the verb "crumbles" connotes decay and death. The narrator views
the sunrise, normally a symbol of life and rebirth, as a symbol of death. He takes this unusual stance
because dawn was a common time to begin artillery barrages in anticipation of an attack.
Confirming the poem is taking place before a dawn barrage, the author calls no–man's–land "the
sleeping green", with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a previous incarnation of the poem, called "In the Trenches", symbolism was more overt. In this
draft, the speaker gives a "blood red poppy" to his companion in the trenches and places another
behind his ear. Then an artillery shell lands, killing his companion in the trenches. Impacts litter the
bottom of the trench with poppies and cover everything in dust. An artillery shell kills the narrator's
fellow in a gruesome way and he is "smashed"

Jannette's View on Freedom
When I was little, one of my fondest memories was during Christmas while living out in the desert.
My parents, unable to purchase presents due to a lack of money this time of year, or most times of
the year, settled for something different. Dad took us kids out into the desert one by one and told
each of us to pick out a star in the night sky; we could pick out any star we wanted. I remember
staring up at the night sky and being totally astonished seeing all of the twinkling stars and lights
and then my father crouched down next to me: "Rich city folks, he'd say, lived in fancy apartments,
but their air was so polluted they couldn't even see the stars. We'd have to be out of our minds to

"Sorry for wasting your time Mr Hackl–" "Here, take ten dollars, sir," someone asserted from

Descriptive Essay: Middle School
In my bedroom closet, folded and tucked neatly in a box, is a blanket. At a glance, the piece of
patchwork looks rather mundane. As one looks closer, "blanket" is a rather generous word for the
piece, considering it is a part of an unfinished project. So why keep this small scrap of fabric? It
provides warmth, not to my appendages, rather to my soul. The blanket itself is a rather odd shape.
Small and square, it is not the right length for a baby, much less a full grown human. Though
incomplete, the work that was performed to the blanket was skillful, even beautiful. A soft floral
pattern was woven into each quilted square. Only a delicate hand would be capable of making each
stitch so precise. There are nine symmetrical squares, each the size of small napkins. Each square
holds four triangles, touching on the tip, two solid blocks of color and two whimsically patterned.
The colors of the coverlet are soft yet vibrant all in the same view. Different shades of peach and
pink mimic the most beautiful of flowers. Small specks of blue contrast triangles of white, similar to
clouds parting into a clear sky. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

A Family Of Five Were The First Group Shot
A family of five were in the first group shot. A gray–haired elderly woman cradled a baby. The child
couldn't have been more than three months old. She was singing and tickling the little one to keep
her from crying. The baby cooed with delight. Everyone was standing around with tears in their
eyes.
A father holding the hand of his six–year–old spoke softly to him. The boy wept from fear. His
father stroked the boy's head and pointed to the skies. It was as though he was explaining something
to him. The machine guns opened up. They and others fell backward into the dry riverbed.
There was an elderly frail snow–white haired woman. Others helped her undress to the shouts of the
insurgent's to hurry up. Two young women helped carry her to her place in line in front of the
makeshift grave.
A young couple held each other tightly. Their wedding day was the following weekend. Looking
into each other's eyes, the man spoke tenderly to her. He told her about how their families had
arranged a nearby hotel for their honeymoon. Now they lay together in a cold, uncaring hollow in
the ground. About thirty people at a time they led to the slaughter.
When the little girl's turn, came. As she made her way to the pit, she saw a mound of bodies tightly
wedged together. In the distance, she heard screams from other people being killed a little way
away. The terrorists dragged their blood covered bodies over to the riverbed and dumped them in on
top of the others.

identify the killer of Laius and save the city from the plague. In his conversation with Oedipus about
this matter, he reveals to him that even if he speaks the truth, the events that are predetermined by
the gods will still happen (Sophocles 16). Oedipus, like many others in the play, believes that he can
change what the gods have set forth in his life before him, but the gods will strike that theory right
out of the sky as he learns later that regardless of the steps he took to prevent his fate from being
completed, he still ended with the same result. They made sure he knew that they were in complete
and utter control of his life. The gods are acting liking tyrants in the way that they micromanage his

Aunt Nicey: A Short Story

Persuasive Essay On Sports Games
During youth athletics, many seasons end with a gathering, a cook–out perhaps, and more often than
not, participation trophies are given out to the young players. A coach hands a plastic trophy or a
plaque to the players whether or not they actually earned it and a successful season took place. Sure,
a nice plastic participation trophy might fill the empty space on your dusty shelves, but is it instilling
false expectations in children? As we get older, we realize that participating in events does not
necessarily mean that we will always receive something in return. Since that is the truth, why are
Americans subconsciously instilling the opposite value in children? In youth athletics, children
should not be rewarded with participation trophies because these types of trophies do not encourage
children to improve or be competitive. In turn, a lack of desire to improve and compete may harm a
child's ability to be successful in the future. Recently, a debate has been ignited among parents,
coaches, players, and sports influencers alike over participation awards and their true value. A recent
Reason–Rupe poll discovers that "when it comes to kids and their trophies, fifty–seven percent of
Americans think only the winning players should receive [trophies]" (Elkins). The debate was
further fueled when Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison took to Instagram and publicly
returned his eight and six year–old children's participation awards asserting; "While I am very proud

The Scarlet Ibis Doodle's Life
In the life of a boy named Doodle, a remarkable tale by, James Hurst, " The Scarlet Ibis". This is a

Doodle's story is inspiring because of all he has gone through. His heart was not stable and he was

It is not a mental crazy, but more rather a fun, happy crazy. This is what makes Doodle such a

quite funny actually. "He even came up with the idea that he could marry Mama and I could marry
Daddy" (Hurst 559). Well, Doodle is having fun and that is all he needs to have in life. The main
point of life is to live it. I don't blame Doodle for his crazy ideas, but some of them are very crazy.
"We chose to reveal it all on October eighth, Doodle's sixth birthday, and for weeks ahead we

probably the craziest one of them all. It was a good thing to do on Doodle's birthday, but that could

Theme Of The Scarlet Ibis
In the short story "The Scarlet Ibis," James Hurst uses the setting to have a greater effect on how the
reader feels while reading the text. Hurst uses the setting to describe the lighthearted parts of the
text, such as Doodle learning how to walk and stand, the dark parts of the narrative, such as when
Doodle dies, and also uses setting to bring attention to the emotions felt by the reader and mood of
the story. Hurst uses setting to describe the lighthearted parts of the text in order to affect how the
audience feels while reading the story. Doodle stands up for the first time in Old Woman Swamp,
which is a very "happy" and "carefree" place. There, "the grass beneath [them] was soft and the
smell of the swamp was sweet." When Doodle finally stands up, there's a sense of relief and
happiness that we have for Doodle, as he has made a major life achievement. He completes this
achievement in Old Woman Swamp, which was a very happy place. Doodle himself calls Old
Woman Swamp "'So pretty, pretty, pretty.'" Many flowers can be found in Old Woman Swamp, and
Brother describes these flowers as "jewels." Brother also makes note of the way the sunlight touched
the tops of the trees, "[where] the slanted rays of the sun [burns] orange in the tops of the pines."
This gives Old Woman Swamp a glowing and heaven–like feeling, which translates to the reader, so
the reader will feel just as lighthearted and carefree as Doodle and Brother felt while they were at

Analysis Of Speak By Laurie Anderson
The book Speak by Laurie Anderson is a book about how Melinda Sordino overcomes the troubles
in her life, and how she learned to speak up for herself. The author uses a lot of archetypes and

which will help the readers to better understand what Anderson is trying to tell.
When Melinda started her first day of high school, she suffered from peer pressure with her best

mindset also began to get better as well. If the tree meant "to shelter", then Melinda sure developed
a very nice shelter for herself in the end. Laurie Anderson also used allusions while describing
Melinda's trauma. "IT sees me. IT smiles and winks. Good thing my lips are stitched together or I'd
throw up." (Anderson 96). The book Maya Angelou is written by a girl who was once raped. The
experience is similar between Melinda and Angelou. The audience may not fully understand what
Melinda was thinking during that time, but the book, Maya Angelou, fully describes the life of a
raped girl which gave us a fuller understanding of the situation that Melinda was dealing with. She
also used the archetype of darkness, when Melinda was raped, it was night time. Darkness
represents Chaos, emblem of bad judgment and destruction, for instance, Melinda was raped in the
darkness. This word should give the readers a clear "foreshadowing" of what will happen next. The
author also used the archetype of coldness throughout the story. For instance, at

Similes In The Scarlet Ibis
Frail, Weak, and Thin
If anybody had any clue what the title of the story indicates, they would understand that the scarlet
ibis is one of the most fragile animals known to mankind. With only stick–thin legs holding up their
tiny frames, the scarlet ibis appears seemingly incapable of holding up its own tiny frame. Similar to
the ibis, a story that shares the same name as the bird itself features a character with the same
physical disabilities. Through these disabilities, his brother, who is also the narrator of the story,
tries to help him break through these disabilities, but doesn't always participate in doing it for the
good of his crippled brother.Throughout the short story "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst, Hurst

At the beginning of the story, the narrator is displeased about his handicapped brother, as the
narrator feels let down by his healthy sibling misfortune. One obvious signal of this mentality is the
quote provided early in the story, as the narrator mentions "I made plans to kill him... he was a
burden in many ways" (1,2). Although that statement may seem slightly exaggerated to the reader, it
still does provide the reader an idea about the feelings that the narrator is demonstrating toward
Doodle. However, rather than the narrator remaining eternally perplexed about his brother's health
condition, the narrator eventually decides to help his brother with his quest, and once he
accomplishes this task, he explicitly showcases his feelings proclaiming "I cried, and he cried too...
the grass beneath us was soft and the smell of the swamp was sweet" (3). As it is clearly stated, the
collectiveness between accomplishing the goal was shared amongst both of them, as the
descriptiveness of the swamp and grass further indicates this positive nature. Although the narrator
has his ups and downs with his brother, the overall bond that they share is very unique, finalizing the
important elements of the ever important external

Essay On The Truth In To Kill A Mockingbird
The American actress Goldie Hawn once said that "the biggest lesson you can learn in life, or teach
your children, is that life is not castles in the skies, happily ever after. The biggest lesson we have to
give our children is truth" (Safire 99). In Harper Lee's novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch, a
lawyer, emphasizes teaching his children the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. To Kill
a Mockingbird exposes the reader to several situations in Maycomb County, Alabama, in the 1930s,
and reveals Atticus's beliefs concerning those situations. Atticus's beliefs can be seen through the
lessons he teaches his children, which center around a reliance on coping skills and personal
fortitude when dealing with unjust ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The church and God are synonymous with righteousness. Therefore, Atticus uses the widespread
influence of religion to equate the moral teachings of God with how he dutifully carries out the
defense of an innocent black man. These instances in which Atticus's true character is revealed, both
directly and indirectly, teach Scout and Jem that keeping a good conscience is the perfect antidote to
"Maycomb's usual disease", which is just a small strain of the larger societal problem of prejudice.
Atticus teaches the children how to not only recognize this problem of prejudice, but also how to
defeat it. When a mob of men try to lynch Tom Robinson at the jailhouse and Atticus protects Tom,
Scout innocently involves herself in the situation and as a result forces Mr. Cunningham to put
himself in Atticus's shoes. In his moment of realization, he disbands the mob, which saves Tom's
life. Atticus later explains to his children that "A mob's always made up of people, no matter what.
Mr. Cunningham was part of a mob last night, but he was still a man. Every mob in every little
Southern town is always made up of people you know – doesn't say much for them, does it?" (Lee
179). Atticus says this in order to give his children a better understanding of the events of the
previous night. He also wants the children to understand that all chains have a weak link, and
finding that weak link in Mr. Cunningham

Dead: A Fictional Narrative
Rain dribbled down the gravestones, down the monuments, down the men with bowed heads. The
sky was trademark English grey, the sort of colourless, dreary sky that so many cynics and sceptics
had been born under, the grass was less of a green colour, and more of a dead brown, and the
poppies had bowed their head, weighed down by the drizzle, and out of respect for the dead. The
only things that looked clean and not devoid of life were the gravestones: white marble, drenched in
rain, almost gleaming. The gravestones didn't slump like their onlookers, with their backs arched
and legs bent, but rather stood upright, perfectly balanced, in neat, faultless rows. Each row was
perfect, neat, and even rather beautiful. There was something breath–taking about the thousands and
thousands of rows of white slabs, all anonymous and impersonal, standing at attention.
The rain pattered on the umbrellas as the village church chimed out the eleventh hour. One of the

focused on the teardrops dribbling down the marble, trying to ignore a child grumbling to it's father
on how the man with one arm to his side was scaring him and the father's shushing, not out of
respect for the others, but out of fear for his impeccable social image.
Tenth chime. The hunched man met eyes with the veteran to his side. He didn't know him, he had

Scarlet Ibis Symbolism
Pakistani novelist Nadeem Aslam once said, "Pull a thread here and you'll find it's attached to the
rest of the world." This simple phrase explains how a single action, big or small, can make an
impact bigger than itself. This can be true in literature as well. Symbolism in a story can lead to
deeper understanding of the meaning of the text; one simple element can create something bigger
than itself, such as the theme of the text. A theme is the central topic of a text which is an important
part in literature. James Hurst includes symbolism in the short story "The Scarlet Ibis." The
symbolism which is included is a thread in the story that is attached to the big picture, the theme.
Death is the theme of the short story. Symbolism in "The Scarlet ... Show more content on

The scarlet ibis is one of the ways that the color red is included in the story because the ibis is red.
Doodle sets eyes on the bird and announces, "It's a great big red bird" then it "tumbled down" and "
[laid] on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers" (321). Doodle sees the "great big red bird" in
the yard which is how the scarlet ibis is described before they know the type of bird. The bird died
as it "tumbled down" the tree and hit the ground. The ibis is compared to a "broken vase of red
flowers" when it is lying on the ground dead. This is another connection to the color red because of
red flowers. The broken red vase is symbolic of the broken ibis and the red flower are the ibis. Red
is connected to the ibis again through the vase and red flowers. The scarlet ibis is symbolic of death
because of how it dies in the story. The color red has the same symbolism as the scarlet ibis because
they are linked by color. Death, as a theme is developed because this link creates the symbolic
meaning of the color red. Doodle is found at the end of the story with blood coming from his mouth.
The narrator finds that Doodle "had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his
shirt were stained a brilliant red" (323). The color red is found in the "brilliant red" blood "from
[Doodle's] mouth." Seeing Doodle's "neck and the front of his shirt stained" with blood is an
indication that Doodle is gone. The red blood is a sign, symbolic of death. As the blood is red, the
color red is then a symbol that stands for death. The color red stands for death because the color of
the blood connects the symbolism of the blood to the symbolism of the color. The color isn't
symbolic alone, but with the tie to the blood through color it becomes symbolic. The theme of death
is created because the color red is symbolic of death based on what objects are

Second Skin : New Design Organics
The body has been a key focus in the design world across all history according to Ellen Lupton as
people like to build and make things that look like them. It's also prevalent as objects made come
into contact with the skin and at times, act as extensions for the body allowing it to do things it
cannot. In her essay Second Skin: new design organics (2006), Lupton discusses the surfaces of
objects; from lights, to chairs, and to building materials, acting like skin which allow for a
fluctuating understanding of the objects meaning and function. Representing the body in
architecture has been a common practice for almost all of architectural history dating back to
Vitruvius however Anthony Vidler believes that the practice of architecture is distancing itself
further from the body. Sigmund Freud describes this a tradition of body projection which leads to
the creation of object–surrogates where one thing represents the other. For example, the telescope as
an eye, electrical circuits as a nervous system and a dwelling as the womb . This section of the paper
will show how Vidler's statement is untrue through an analysis of work from the likes of Le
Corbusier and Filaret, then, see how it can be extended to FOA's design of the terminal
Vidler's main argument for the loss of the body in architecture is from his belief that the
development of modern, technology dependent architecture has muted the need for a perfect bodily
proportion that was prevailing in classical and

Futility, Spring Offensive And Exposure By Wilfred Owen
Eco–critics ask questions such as whether or not 'Everything is connected to everything else', in
order to explore the realms of human thought. In relation to Wilfred Owen's poems; Futility, Spring
Offensive, and Exposure, this theory that all living things are interconnected is a multifaceted one.
Nature is used heavily as a centralised motif in each of them, albeit in different ways, in order to
represent a range of both internal and external battles Owen's soldiers are forced to undergo during
active service in the war. The soldiers are also depicted to depend on, as well as exploit their rural
surroundings in equal measure, particularly concerning military action. As a concept, ecocriticism is
a contemporary approach and it is therefore highly unlikely that Owen would have intentionally
included such heavily cited links with eco criticism, especially considering that he claimed his
subject to be, 'war and the pity of war'. Owen himself believed that the war he was fighting was
needless, and only caused pain and suffering. His work sheds light on the harsh, brutality of warfare
whilst challenging the patriotic nature of other existing war poems at the time, believing that they
did not truly depict the war he was all too familiar with, "true Poets must be Truthful". However,
applying Owen's work through an ecological perspective is not a completely futile, as Owen's depth
of understanding can provide us with insight into the effect humans, particularly soldiers, had on
their biosphere during this period in history and vice versa; this is, "The fundamental premise that
human culture is connected to the physical world, affecting it and affected by it." It is these
connections with the natural world that highlight both Owen's love of the natural world, influenced
by the likes of Romanticist poet John Keats, and his sense of anguish towards humanity and their
distorted concept of war.
The obscure relationship between man and environment is addressed abundantly throughout each of
the throughout the three poems, as it is made apparent that Owen tended to use pathetic fallacy as a
motif to reflect the internal conflicts of the soldiers. When the weather is peaceful, the soldiers are
too, as seen briefly in

Now, as any of my friends would readily testify, I am a hot–house girl so the nearest I got to bearing

living in Iceland among the highest in the world.
Within a short drive of the Hotel Ranga – constructed in an attractive alpine style with wood, which
is rare in Iceland since there are very few trees – we were marvelling at the power of vast waterfalls
which crashed down the face of dark cliffs into deep pools and out again into salmon rivers.
Bjorn, who was generously acting as our guide for the day, explained that the lowland areas would
be filled with acres of purple–coloured Alaskan lupins early in the summer, introduced to encourage
plant growth on the volcanic rock and soil which would otherwise have remained moss–covered or
barren.
Although 70% of Iceland is uninhabitable, a main ring road runs the complete circumference of the

pretty, long–maimed, miniature ponies playing and sheltering from the wind at every twist and turn.
Almost as a compensation for the darkness of the volcanic scenery and winter conditions – it isn't
fully light until around 10am in November – the population choose a rainbow of bright colours for
their homes. Cheerful red and blue roofs sit on top of white walls. From a distance, the buildings

Causes Of The Mass Extinction Of Dinosaurs
We know that there is evidence that dinosaurs once roamed the earth. The only thing dinosaurs left
behind is their bones that has helped us learn more about them like what they might have looked
like, what they ate, and where they lived but the biggest mystery that still has not been explained is,
what exactly caused this mass extinction of dinosaurs to be wiped off the face of the earth?
Dinosaurs lived for 165 millions years until 66 million years ago when they went extinct. In this
mass extinction 70 percent of species including dinosaurs, plants, and ocean animals were hit the
hardest and caused them to die. In the ocean organisms like foraminifera that are single celled

My belief is that both the asteroid and ice age theory played a big role as to when the dinosaurs had
become extinct. After the meteor had hit the earth, some of the dinosaurs and other life did die from
the impact causing the destruction to the land on the earth and to the environment causing them to
die off because of bad air quality, the loss of photosynthesis, and the little food there was for their
survival. The others that had stayed alive would have probably migrated to other areas on earth
where it was least affected and livable for the dinosaurs to live in and continue to live their lives for
many years to come before they too eventually died off. Since the meteor was very large and
powerful, it could have done some damage to the earth but of course it didn't because it is still here
but it could have tilted earth's axis in which it slowly affected the climate change. This was probably
the start of the ice age slowly coming together. Eventually the dinosaurs that did survive starting
feeling the effects of low dropping temperatures in the new climate change, something that they
were not used to before because they were cold blooded animals and needed the sun to keep their
bodies warm. Eventually the low temperatures caused ice to form on the North and South poles
making the oceans colder and possibly freezing the oceans. The dinosaurs would not be able to

Comparing The Silk Road Trials And Triumphs
Silk Road Trials and Triumphs Traders prospered from the Silk Road, but they had to overcome the
many dangers along the route before they could gain their wealth. These challenges, ranging from
human to natural, made trading along the Silk Road a more difficult task. In order to be successful,
merchants were required to be innovative and adapt to the conditions. Much of the Silk Road route
is over trying terrain, such as high altitude mountains and arid deserts that stretch for miles. The
mountain ranges along the trail include Tienshan, Hindu Kush, Mongolian Altai, and Pamir , and
traders had to search for passes to get through them because they were too steep and tall to climb
over. Even so, the passes were not much safer than the peaks, such as an account of a traveler
through one of these passes: The barrier formed by the Suspended Crossing is such that it cannot be
easily traversed. There is a path that is 20 inches wide, that leads forward for a length of twelve
miles, overlooking a precipice whose depth is unfathomed. Travelers passing on horse or foot hold

The Theme Of Love In James Hurst's 'The Scarlet Ibis'
Love is the strongest force on the planet. It can move mountains and bend rivers. Love is affection
and passion. But love cannot consistently be there for a person. Love is not guaranteed. Love is not
like a good pair of shoes waiting to be worn. Love is the only thing in the world that can save and
ruin a person, just like how it wrecked Doodle's brother. Doodle and his brother seemed inseparable.
Doodle constantly had his brother's back, but Doodle's brother did not seem to have his. Brother
took Doodle's love for granted and he did not realize it until Doodle was gone, along with his love.
In the story of The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, the theme of when love is taken for granted, people
do not realize it until it is gone can be revealed through foreshadowing and symbolism. First and
foremost, the idea of people not realizing love before it is gone can be shown through
foreshadowing. When Doodle was born, his family thought he was not going to make it because he
was not fully there. When Doodle continued to live, which was not expected, his casket was put up
in the barn attic. One day, Brother decided to to take Doodle up to the barn attic and did not let
Doodle leave until he put his hands on the casket. Brother adds, "Doodle was paralyzed, so I put him
on my shoulder and carried him down the ladder, and even when we were outside in the bright
sunshine, he clung to me, crying, 'Don't leave me. Don't leave me.'"(Hurst 2) This quote shows how

Canada declares war on Germany. Adolf Hitler, leader of Nazi Germany started to rise in Europe by
conquering Poland, which had agitated the British and French, making them declare war on
Germany. So, a week later Canada decided to declare war with the support of the government as
well as their British and French citizens to help their motherlands fight the Germans. This is
significant, because Canada independently came to the decision of declaring war on Germany. Also,
from that day Canada became apart of one of the biggest events to occur in Canadian and world
history.

War Measures Act invoked, which means enemy aliens could be sent to internment camps. This act
provided the government to do anything important for the security, peace and welfare of Canada. So,
anybody who was considered a threat would be sent to internment camps. Unfortunately, the
Japanese suffered the most of this act in 1942. This act was significant, because people who came to
Canada from war countries needed their help and support, but their situation became worse by being
sent to internment camps. Also significant, because it helped Canadians be safer and gave
government more power, but it made enemy aliens suffer even more.

depict: the bushes in Our English Coasts are fluid, they appears to grow everywhere and the grasses
in A converted British Family sheltering a Christian Missionary from the Persecution of the Druids
is very flexible, able to blend and tilt any direction. The wheats in Fairlight Downs, for me, are very
solid, unable to bend and will break if the sheep wanders near it. However, the farther I look into the
painting, the wheat blends together more and merge with the lustfully green grass where the sheep
roam. I think that the stiff wheat near the beginning is to symbolize that Britain is going through
fragile time, where one mistake can break Britain dominance during over the world. But the blend of
grass and wheat is very smooth, as if saying that by moving forward, everything will fall into place
as everyone, the sheep, as people, and the dog, as the Queen, work together to achieve the end
result: creation of factories, expansion of land, and advancement of trade; the sheep provide the
means to create goods and the dog monitors the process. Even the clouds in the background
seemingly represent support from the heaven by the depiction of shining lights. On the edge of the
sky, there

Woman In Berlin
The Reading A Woman in Berlin details the experiences of a women during the time when Russia
occupied Berlin, Germany. While reading about her experience we are able to understand many
things about Russia occupation in Berlin, Germany. Her diary expresses the problems women faced
in regards to the Russian soldiers, the affect the war played on the Germans in Berlin, and how the
German people dealt with the Russia soldiers.
Young women in particular face serious forms of abuse during this time. The author describes on
multiple occasions when she was assaulted by Russian soldiers. While she describes how horrible
this makes her feels, she knows that having the Russian officers around her does protect her in
certain ways. She is the companion of Russian soldier by the name of Anatol. He and other soldiers

During this meeting the German women relayed all the information she had on the what was
happening in the war. She writes, "very quickly, as fast as I can speak, I report what news I've
gleaned from Russian papers and from the Russians themselves" (pg. 84). Her connection with
Russia military men (while not very pleasant) did give her the ability to gain information on what
was happening. These meeting are time to spread information about the war as well as about the
people in this community. A woman from Hamburg tells the group that she had been hiding her from
the Russians in a false ceiling (pg. 84). The Germans had to have some type of organization and
strategies to survive under the harsh rules of the Russians. This journal was by far the most
interesting to me. This German women autobiography gave us a personal account of how the it felt
to live during the time of WWII. Most importantly, this was during the time when the Germans had
lost control and were being overran by their adversaries. Also this diary gave us a lot of insight from
the perspective of a women during this

Learning And Identity: What Does It Mean To Be A Half-Elf?
I found great meaning in the essay "Learning and Identity: What does it mean to be a Half–Elf ?",
by James Paul Gee. After reading through Gee's analysis of video games I was particularly drawn to
the connection he made with learning in the classroom. I feel that the projective identity (picturing
what one would like to be in a given role) is critical to learning, as is learning at the threshold
between one's boundaries and beyond. While I agreed with Gee in most principles regarding deep
learning, I disagreed with his statement against learning in the "skill and drill method" (Gee 66). I
also felt that while the "Psychosocial Moratorium Principle" (Gee 64) holds true, sometimes risk in
the real world can help one learn valuable lessons not possible in a reduced risk environment such as
a video game. In subsequent paragraphs I will expand upon these statements using logical reasoning
and personal experience. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Just as one has to learn a subject or learn how to play a video game, I had to master usage of the
camera in order improve the quality of my pictures. One of the biggest step towards taking better
photos is shooting in the manual mode on a DSLR camera. When shooting high action wildlife such
as birds, I was always afraid to shoot in manual because I felt that I would either miss the shot I
wanted while adjusting settings, or mess up the exposure if I hurried through the process. Unlike
video games, the consequences I faced were tangible and irreversible. Suppose that I was
photographing a hawk flying. Were I to mess up my settings or spend too much time adjusting the
camera I could blow the opportunity, or even miss it altogether. I couldn't "save" the moment and
revisit it like I could a Call of Duty campaign, and the moment would be

A Report On Passive Solar Architecture
PASSIVE SOLAR ARCHITECTURE INTRODUCTION:1 The last two decade has witnessed a
severe energy crisis in developing countries especially during summer season primarily due to
cooling load requirements of buildings. The energy consumption in buildings is quite high and is
expected to further increase because of improving standards of life and increasing world population.
Air conditioning use has increasingly penetrated the market during the last few years and greatly
contributes in the upsurge of absolute energy consumption. INTRODUCTION 2: Buildings account
for at least 40% of energy use in most countries. The construction sector in India is witnessing a fast
growth due to several factors. Some of the key growth drivers are increased demand for housing,
strong demographic impetus, expansion of organized retail, increased demand for commercial office
spaces by multinationals and IT (information technology) hubs, and coming up of SEZs (special
economic zones). The gross built–up area added to commercial and residential spaces was about
40.8 million square metres in 2004/05, which is about 1% of annual average constructed floor area
around the world, and the trend shows a sustained growth of 10% over the coming years. With a
near consistent 8% rise in annual energy consumption in the residential and commercial sectors,
energy consumption in buildings has seen an increase from a low of 14% in the 1970s to nearly 33%
in 2004/05. This is directly related to higher greenhouse gas

  • 1. The sun rose at six but the night lingered, needy and... The sun rose at six but the night lingered, needy and obsessed like an abandoned lover hanging around the old places. Veronique lay on the roof of Villa Maldorme, on a white bedspread. Last night, she had a near overdose. For many hours she lay on the roof, floating in a blue, deflated world until the gentle gurgling of the morning's transfusion woke her. The arteries of the sky, which only a few hours before unwilling poured their blood into the vague, moody sea, were not being refilled, slowly swelling with light pumped from the luminous water. A gull lunged towards Veronique with a homicidal screech. She covered her head but was only brushed by the gull's vulture–shadow. Adriatic white–scapes in the day, bodyscapes in the night, ... "It happened after my father had an accident." "Did he ..." "Yes." The simplicity and flatness of this one word wounded her. She wanted to get up and walk out, slam the door in his shocked and uncomprehending face, be alone for a long time, for the rest of the time. But which time and when would it end? She couldn't talk about her father to a virtual stranger, even if he was her traveling companion. One word, unchangeable, and so brutally, callously casual. Yes. He could've asked her if she'd had breakfast. If she'd ever sky–dived. The faded plush curtains of the myth–making years parted. The Aegean light revealed a place she recognised in a way she would recognise a blurry face in the background of a forgotten photograph. The harbour of Thessaloniki from which the stink of sewage rose when the vardari, the northern wind, pierced the city. The warm–faced people dishevelled by the vardhini. The now deserted, windswept, unbearable beaches of Halkidiki. Everywhere, she had to stop herself from looking for the tall, stooped, bald silhouette, carrying paper–cones darkly full of sunflower seeds. She found a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It seemed as if the world was grieving as well. The trees really did seem like weeping willows. The sky was as cloudy as my heart, not letting a single ray of light out. The wind sounding like spirits having cries of their own. It was all, just so, depressing. Seeing the situation only made me start a storm of my own. As the tears trickled down my cheek, soon forming into niagara falls. Staring at the phone, the bold white letters, spelling out my signal. "Mama! Is everything okay?" I didn't have to see her to know how she felt, the silence, followed by sobbs shrieked millions of words. "Mija, he's, he's, gone, dead. I felt faint at the thought of it being the truth. It's not possible, not so soon! "I'm sorry mija, but this is reality." Those words, this is reality, confirmed it: he really is gone. I felt the truth come back and smack me in the face. The white roses, above the polished coffin, only bringing back those tender, sweet memories I have with him. His smile, now diminishing from existence. His eyes enough to express thousands of thoughts in a blink, now eternally silenced. • 5. The Role Of The Gods In Oedipus The King By Sophocles Final Copy Does anyone like being told what to do, where they need to be, or how they are to live their life? Of course not, no one likes to have his or her life micromanaged for them. In the world–renowned Ancient Greek tragedy, Oedipus the King, by the famous playwright Sophocles, that is exactly what the gods do by controlling all aspects of the Thebans' lives. The gods in this Ancient Greek tragedy are tyrants in that they determine one's fate with no terrestrial hope of changing it and command the Thebans to find the killer of Laius or face a crippling plague. One of the main themes of this Greek tragedy is that no one can change his or her fate that has been predetermined by the gods. One example of this is when Teiresias is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unfortunately, to her disbelief, she is just perpetuating the problem. Jocasta believes that she can take the world into her own hands and prevent the awful tragedy that is her son killing her husband, King Laius, as well as sleeping with and bearing children with her murderous son. To prevent that awful occurrence from happening, she and King Laius bind the child up when he is just three days old and leave him to die on the side of a mountain so there is absolutely no chance of the prophecy being completed; however, she is greatly mistaken. She says feeling confident in her preventative measures, "...So in this case Apollo's purpose failed...so much for oracles that map our future..." (Sophocles 29). Jocasta believes at that point in the selection that she has thwarted the prophecy of the gods. However, she later realizes that even though she takes precautionary measures to prevent that occurrence from ever happening, she is not greater than the gods. This is purely another example of the gods being sovereign rulers of the people of Thebes. In addition, the gods make sure the prophecy comes true and Oedipus commits the awful acts that he is destined to perform. Because of this, the gods remain victorious and in complete power over her life, her son's, and the events that occur within ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Painting Analysis : Cafe Terrace At Night, Van Gogh One of the most important observations anyone could make while viewing a painting is the artist's delicate choice and use of colors. In paintings, colors serve two different but equally important purposes. One purpose is to draw attention to the painting, while the other purpose is to display emotions. An artist that understood the importance of color in paintings extremely well was the late talented Vincent Van Gogh. In his painting Café Terrace at Night, Van Gogh incorporates a vast array of colors to arouse emotions from within the audience. In order to assess which colors aroused which emotions two important questions must be answered. What emotions do the specific colors used within the painting give off to the audience? How have the emotions behind the colors been learned through normal human experience over time? Most colors within the visible light spectrum hold specific emotions that are conveyed to individuals by artists through their pieces of art. Van Gogh carefully incorporated both vibrant and dark colors in his iconic painting Café Terrace at Night, of which span across a vast array of emotions. One of the colors that stand out when you first observe the painting is the vibrant yellow used for the exterior of the café. The color yellow is known within the art community as a cheerful and warm color, helping the café to come across as an inviting gathering place to the individuals observing the painting. Another color that Van Gogh used which quickly grabs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Kite Runner Analysis Amir's merciless encounter with his childhood enemy Assef and Hassan's rape relates to the violence of the islamic revolution and chaos of Afghanistan, which illustrates the importance of the past, the feeling of guilt and the redemption for one's past sins. He narrates the turbulent journey of a man named Amir, who is haunted by his past and the ghosts of his sins. • 13. Sheltering Sky versus Blood Meridian Essay Extreme circumstances bring about substantial changes in people. At least that is what Paul Bowles and Cormac McCarthy seem to be saying in the writing of their respective books, The Sheltering Sky and Blood Meridian. Both authors place their characters in difficult locations, dealing with difficult people and expect them to emerge changed, for better or for worse. In The Sheltering Sky, Bowles takes his American trio and places them in the desert lands of the African continent where the wide, dry impossibly desolate terrain takes its toll on their minds and bodies. Likewise, McCarthy takes his ragged bunch of marauders, most prominently the Kid, and has them wandering the massive expanse of the untamed west. This convention of forced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both parties chance upon characters, both eccentric and dangerous, and all involved seem to get themselves into the most impossible situations imaginable. Apparently the point Bowles and McCarthy are trying to convey to the reader is that great change and substantial inner growth can only come about through intense emotional stress and physical challenge. Kit, in The Sheltering Sky, learns some very interesting things about herself through the course of our travels with her. She starts out as Port's wife, a secondary character of sorts, afraid to voice her opinions on virtually everything. We have the inside track on her thought s and feelings though, and are privy to the fact that she is unhappy not only with her situation and current location, but also with her marriage and identity. • 15. Break Day In The Trenches The Western Front in World War One was a bleak place for soldiers. Men died from bullets, shrapnel, concussive blasts, gas, disease, dehydration, trench foot, and exposure. The life expectancy in the trenches was only six weeks (War History Online). In "Break Day in the Trenches", Isaac Rosenberg documents the feelings of a sentry at dawn. The sentry watches the sun begin to rise and plucks a poppy to put behind his ear. He watches a rat and internally converses with it, before coming under attack by an artillery barrage. In "Break Day in the Trenches", Isaac Rosenberg uses symbols of poppies and rats to support an implicit claim that death is always nearby on the front lines. In the first line of the poem, Rosenberg evokes imagery of death, writing, "The darkness crumbles away". Darkness and death have been conjoined in human consciousness since the beginning of time, and the use of the verb "crumbles" connotes decay and death. The narrator views the sunrise, normally a symbol of life and rebirth, as a symbol of death. He takes this unusual stance because dawn was a common time to begin artillery barrages in anticipation of an attack. Confirming the poem is taking place before a dawn barrage, the author calls no–man's–land "the sleeping green", with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dad took us kids out into the desert one by one and told each of us to pick out a star in the night sky; we could pick out any star we wanted. As one looks closer, "blanket" is a rather generous word for the piece, considering it is a part of an unfinished project. So why keep this small scrap of fabric? It provides warmth, not to my appendages, rather to my soul. The blanket itself is a rather odd shape. Small and square, it is not the right length for a baby, much less a full grown human. Though incomplete, the work that was performed to the blanket was skillful, even beautiful. A soft floral pattern was woven into each quilted square. Only a delicate hand would be capable of making each stitch so precise. There are nine symmetrical squares, each the size of small napkins. Each square holds four triangles, touching on the tip, two solid blocks of color and two whimsically patterned. The colors of the coverlet are soft yet vibrant all in the same view. Different shades of peach and pink mimic the most beautiful of flowers. Small specks of blue contrast triangles of white, similar to clouds parting into a clear sky. ... • 25. The Role Of The Gods In Oedipus The King Does anyone like being told what to do, where they need to be, or how they are to live their life? Of course not, no one likes to have his or her life micromanaged for them. In the world–renowned Ancient Greek tragedy, Oedipus the King, by the famous playwright Sophocles, that is exactly what the gods do by controlling all aspects of the Thebans' lives. The gods in this Ancient Greek tragedy are tyrants in that they determine one's fate with no terrestrial hope of changing it and command the Thebans to find the killer of Laius or face a crippling plague. One of the main themes of this Greek tragedy is that no one can change his or her fate that has been predetermined by the gods. One example of this is when Teiresias is summoned to help the kingdom identify the killer of Laius and save the city from the plague. In his conversation with Oedipus about this matter, he reveals to him that even if he speaks the truth, the events that are predetermined by the gods will still happen (Sophocles 16). Oedipus, like many others in the play, believes that he can change what the gods have set forth in his life before him, but the gods will strike that theory right out of the sky as he learns later that regardless of the steps he took to prevent his fate from being completed, he still ended with the same result. They made sure he knew that they were in complete and utter control of his life. The gods are acting liking tyrants in the way that they micromanage his life and make things ... Persuasive Essay On Sports Games During youth athletics, many seasons end with a gathering, a cook–out perhaps, and more often than not, participation trophies are given out to the young players. A coach hands a plastic trophy or a plaque to the players whether or not they actually earned it and a successful season took place. Sure, a nice plastic participation trophy might fill the empty space on your dusty shelves, but is it instilling false expectations in children? As we get older, we realize that participating in events does not necessarily mean that we will always receive something in return. Since that is the truth, why are Americans subconsciously instilling the opposite value in children? In youth athletics, children should not be rewarded with participation trophies because these types of trophies do not encourage children to improve or be competitive. In turn, a lack of desire to improve and compete may harm a child's ability to be successful in the future. Recently, a debate has been ignited among parents, coaches, players, and sports influencers alike over participation awards and their true value. A recent Reason–Rupe poll discovers that "when it comes to kids and their trophies, fifty–seven percent of Americans think only the winning players should receive [trophies]" (Elkins). Hurst uses the setting to describe the lighthearted parts of the text, such as Doodle learning how to walk and stand, the dark parts of the narrative, such as when Doodle dies, and also uses setting to bring attention to the emotions felt by the reader and mood of the story. Hurst uses setting to describe the lighthearted parts of the text in order to affect how the audience feels while reading the story. Doodle stands up for the first time in Old Woman Swamp, which is a very "happy" and "carefree" place. There, "the grass beneath [them] was soft and the smell of the swamp was sweet." When Doodle finally stands up, there's a sense of relief and happiness that we have for Doodle, as he has made a major life achievement. He completes this achievement in Old Woman Swamp, which was a very happy place. Doodle himself calls Old Woman Swamp "'So pretty, pretty, pretty.'" Many flowers can be found in Old Woman Swamp, and Brother describes these flowers as "jewels." Brother also makes note of the way the sunlight touched the tops of the trees, "[where] the slanted rays of the sun [burns] orange in the tops of the pines." This simple phrase explains how a single action, big or small, can make an impact bigger than itself. This can be true in literature as well. Symbolism in a story can lead to deeper understanding of the meaning of the text; one simple element can create something bigger than itself, such as the theme of the text. A theme is the central topic of a text which is an important part in literature. James Hurst includes symbolism in the short story "The Scarlet Ibis." The symbolism which is included is a thread in the story that is attached to the big picture, the theme. Death is the theme of the short story. Symbolism in "The Scarlet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The scarlet ibis is one of the ways that the color red is included in the story because the ibis is red. Doodle sets eyes on the bird and announces, "It's a great big red bird" then it "tumbled down" and " [laid] on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers" (321). Doodle sees the "great big red bird" in the yard which is how the scarlet ibis is described before they know the type of bird. The bird died as it "tumbled down" the tree and hit the ground. The ibis is compared to a "broken vase of red flowers" when it is lying on the ground dead. This is another connection to the color red because of red flowers. The broken red vase is symbolic of the broken ibis and the red flower are the ibis. Red is connected to the ibis again through the vase and red flowers. The scarlet ibis is symbolic of death because of how it dies in the story. The color red has the same symbolism as the scarlet ibis because they are linked by color. Death, as a theme is developed because this link creates the symbolic meaning of the color red. Doodle is found at the end of the story with blood coming from his mouth. The narrator finds that Doodle "had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red" (323). The color red is found in the "brilliant red" blood "from [Doodle's] mouth." Seeing Doodle's "neck and the front of his shirt stained" with blood is an indication that Doodle is gone. The red blood is a sign, symbolic of death. As the blood is red, the color red is then a symbol that stands for death. The color red stands for death because the color of the blood connects the symbolism of the blood to the symbolism of the color. The color isn't symbolic alone, but with the tie to the blood through color it becomes symbolic. The theme of death is created because the color red is symbolic of death based on what objects are ... • 47. Second Skin : New Design Organics The body has been a key focus in the design world across all history according to Ellen Lupton as people like to build and make things that look like them. It's also prevalent as objects made come into contact with the skin and at times, act as extensions for the body allowing it to do things it cannot. In her essay Second Skin: new design organics (2006), Lupton discusses the surfaces of objects; from lights, to chairs, and to building materials, acting like skin which allow for a fluctuating understanding of the objects meaning and function. Representing the body in architecture has been a common practice for almost all of architectural history dating back to Vitruvius however Anthony Vidler believes that the practice of architecture is distancing itself further from the body. Sigmund Freud describes this a tradition of body projection which leads to the creation of object–surrogates where one thing represents the other. For example, the telescope as an eye, electrical circuits as a nervous system and a dwelling as the womb . This section of the paper will show how Vidler's statement is untrue through an analysis of work from the likes of Le Corbusier and Filaret, then, see how it can be extended to FOA's design of the terminal Vidler's main argument for the loss of the body in architecture is from his belief that the development of modern, technology dependent architecture has muted the need for a perfect bodily proportion that was prevailing in classical and ... • 49. Futility, Spring Offensive And Exposure By Wilfred Owen Eco–critics ask questions such as whether or not 'Everything is connected to everything else', in order to explore the realms of human thought. In relation to Wilfred Owen's poems; Futility, Spring Offensive, and Exposure, this theory that all living things are interconnected is a multifaceted one. Nature is used heavily as a centralised motif in each of them, albeit in different ways, in order to represent a range of both internal and external battles Owen's soldiers are forced to undergo during active service in the war. The soldiers are also depicted to depend on, as well as exploit their rural surroundings in equal measure, particularly concerning military action. As a concept, ecocriticism is a contemporary approach and it is therefore highly unlikely that Owen would have intentionally included such heavily cited links with eco criticism, especially considering that he claimed his subject to be, 'war and the pity of war'. Owen himself believed that the war he was fighting was needless, and only caused pain and suffering. His work sheds light on the harsh, brutality of warfare whilst challenging the patriotic nature of other existing war poems at the time, believing that they did not truly depict the war he was all too familiar with, "true Poets must be Truthful". However, applying Owen's work through an ecological perspective is not a completely futile, as Owen's depth of understanding can provide us with insight into the effect humans, particularly soldiers, had on their biosphere during this period in history and vice versa; this is, "The fundamental premise that human culture is connected to the physical world, affecting it and affected by it." It is these connections with the natural world that highlight both Owen's love of the natural world, influenced by the likes of Romanticist poet John Keats, and his sense of anguish towards humanity and their distorted concept of war. The obscure relationship between man and environment is addressed abundantly throughout each of the throughout the three poems, as it is made apparent that Owen tended to use pathetic fallacy as a motif to reflect the internal conflicts of the soldiers. Water was to become a constant theme for our four–night say in this fascinating island of contrasts which has featured in the news ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite the current blasts of an economic freeze, this is just one factor that keeps the standard of living in Iceland among the highest in the world. Within a short drive of the Hotel Ranga – constructed in an attractive alpine style with wood, which is rare in Iceland since there are very few trees – we were marvelling at the power of vast waterfalls which crashed down the face of dark cliffs into deep pools and out again into salmon rivers. Bjorn, who was generously acting as our guide for the day, explained that the lowland areas would be filled with acres of purple–coloured Alaskan lupins early in the summer, introduced to encourage plant growth on the volcanic rock and soil which would otherwise have remained moss–covered or barren. Although 70% of Iceland is uninhabitable, a main ring road runs the complete circumference of the cost, while the planes support small villages and farmsteads, dotted along the route, with huddles of pretty, long–maimed, miniature ponies playing and sheltering from the wind at every twist and turn. Almost as a compensation for the darkness of the volcanic scenery and winter conditions – it isn't fully light until around 10am in November – the population choose a rainbow of bright colours for their homes. Summary Of 'The Tale Of The Plowman' Canterbury Tales The tale of the Plowman July 12th 1392 The Boiling sun casts a blanket of heat over the mile long fields, a faint voice can be heard in the peaceful atmosphere the calling repeats and a man wearing an tabard smock raises his head from the line of crops to attend to the noise he picks up the bucket of bruised vegetables and travels towards the voice as he gets closer it gets louder and more audible the man slightly drained from the sun and work responds to the voice "Yes dear?" it was his wife Alice she was a hard working woman from another part of the country they met in a church when she was on a family vacation to see her sick mother to her at the time the man was just considered his local name "The Plowman" but this soon changed after meeting frequently at the lords house. • 55. Causes Of The Mass Extinction Of Dinosaurs We know that there is evidence that dinosaurs once roamed the earth. The only thing dinosaurs left behind is their bones that has helped us learn more about them like what they might have looked like, what they ate, and where they lived but the biggest mystery that still has not been explained is, what exactly caused this mass extinction of dinosaurs to be wiped off the face of the earth? Dinosaurs lived for 165 millions years until 66 million years ago when they went extinct. In this mass extinction 70 percent of species including dinosaurs, plants, and ocean animals were hit the hardest and caused them to die. In the ocean organisms like foraminifera that are single celled protists with shells, echinodermata marine invertebrate known as starfish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My belief is that both the asteroid and ice age theory played a big role as to when the dinosaurs had become extinct. After the meteor had hit the earth, some of the dinosaurs and other life did die from the impact causing the destruction to the land on the earth and to the environment causing them to die off because of bad air quality, the loss of photosynthesis, and the little food there was for their survival. The others that had stayed alive would have probably migrated to other areas on earth where it was least affected and livable for the dinosaurs to live in and continue to live their lives for many years to come before they too eventually died off. Since the meteor was very large and powerful, it could have done some damage to the earth but of course it didn't because it is still here but it could have tilted earth's axis in which it slowly affected the climate change. This was probably the start of the ice age slowly coming together. Eventually the dinosaurs that did survive starting feeling the effects of low dropping temperatures in the new climate change, something that they were not used to before because they were cold blooded animals and needed the sun to keep their bodies warm. Eventually the low temperatures caused ice to form on the North and South poles making the oceans colder and possibly freezing the oceans. The dinosaurs would not be able to ... Comparing The Silk Road Trials And Triumphs Silk Road Trials and Triumphs Traders prospered from the Silk Road, but they had to overcome the many dangers along the route before they could gain their wealth. These challenges, ranging from human to natural, made trading along the Silk Road a more difficult task. In order to be successful, merchants were required to be innovative and adapt to the conditions. Much of the Silk Road route is over trying terrain, such as high altitude mountains and arid deserts that stretch for miles. The mountain ranges along the trail include Tienshan, Hindu Kush, Mongolian Altai, and Pamir , and traders had to search for passes to get through them because they were too steep and tall to climb over. Even so, the passes were not much safer than the peaks, such as an account of a traveler through one of these passes: The barrier formed by the Suspended Crossing is such that it cannot be easily traversed. There is a path that is 20 inches wide, that leads forward for a length of twelve miles, overlooking a precipice whose depth is unfathomed. Travelers passing on horse or foot hold on to one another and pull each other along with ropes. • 61. The Theme Of Love In James Hurst's 'The Scarlet Ibis' Love is the strongest force on the planet. It can move mountains and bend rivers. Love is affection and passion. But love cannot consistently be there for a person. Love is not guaranteed. Love is not like a good pair of shoes waiting to be worn. Love is the only thing in the world that can save and ruin a person, just like how it wrecked Doodle's brother. Doodle and his brother seemed inseparable. Doodle constantly had his brother's back, but Doodle's brother did not seem to have his. Brother took Doodle's love for granted and he did not realize it until Doodle was gone, along with his love. In the story of The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, the theme of when love is taken for granted, people do not realize it until it is gone can be revealed through foreshadowing and symbolism. First and foremost, the idea of people not realizing love before it is gone can be shown through foreshadowing. When Doodle was born, his family thought he was not going to make it because he was not fully there. When Doodle continued to live, which was not expected, his casket was put up in the barn attic. One day, Brother decided to to take Doodle up to the barn attic and did not let Doodle leave until he put his hands on the casket. Brother adds, "Doodle was paralyzed, so I put him on my shoulder and carried him down the ladder, and even when we were outside in the bright sunshine, he clung to me, crying, 'Don't leave me. Don't leave me.'"(Hurst 2) This quote shows how Doodle was terrified of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The first to perform was the Concert Band, conducted by Dr. Emily Threinen (Director of Bands at the Univeristy of Minnesota School of Music), with pieces such "Nitro" by Frank Ticheli and "Sheltering Sky" by John Mackey. Adolf Hitler, leader of Nazi Germany started to rise in Europe by conquering Poland, which had agitated the British and French, making them declare war on Germany. So, a week later Canada decided to declare war with the support of the government as well as their British and French citizens to help their motherlands fight the Germans. This is significant, because Canada independently came to the decision of declaring war on Germany. Also, from that day Canada became apart of one of the biggest events to occur in Canadian and world history. 1939 War Measures Act invoked, which means enemy aliens could be sent to internment camps. This act provided the government to do anything important for the security, peace and welfare of Canada. So, anybody who was considered a threat would be sent to internment camps. Unfortunately, the Japanese suffered the most of this act in 1942. This act was significant, because people who came to Canada from war countries needed their help and support, but their situation became worse by being sent to internment camps. Also significant, because it helped Canadians be safer and gave government more power, but it made enemy aliens suffer even more. June 10, 1940 Battle of Britain ... Whereas some people may individually explain the symbolic meaning of each pieces of the painting, I rather look at the painting as a whole while also keeping in mind that Hunt painted this painting over a course of six years. At a closer look, the painting appears to depict the evolution of Britain over the six years; there are depictions of farmer land and factories; and sailboats and steamboats. These illustrations represent Britain's Industrial Revolution, which happened between the 18th and 19th century. At the front of the paintings is red wheat bathing in the red glow of the sun as it sets. However, the wheat appears very rigid, they are stiff instead of flexible plants that some of Hunt's other paintings depict: the bushes in Our English Coasts are fluid, they appears to grow everywhere and the grasses in A converted British Family sheltering a Christian Missionary from the Persecution of the Druids is very flexible, able to blend and tilt any direction. The wheats in Fairlight Downs, for me, are very solid, unable to bend and will break if the sheep wanders near it. However, the farther I look into the painting, the wheat blends together more and merge with the lustfully green grass where the sheep roam. I think that the stiff wheat near the beginning is to symbolize that Britain is going through fragile time, where one mistake can break Britain dominance during over the world. But the blend of grass and wheat is very smooth, as if saying that by moving forward, everything will fall into place as everyone, the sheep, as people, and the dog, as the Queen, work together to achieve the end result: creation of factories, expansion of land, and advancement of trade; the sheep provide the means to create goods and the dog monitors the process. After reading through Gee's analysis of video games I was particularly drawn to the connection he made with learning in the classroom. I feel that the projective identity (picturing what one would like to be in a given role) is critical to learning, as is learning at the threshold between one's boundaries and beyond. While I agreed with Gee in most principles regarding deep learning, I disagreed with his statement against learning in the "skill and drill method" (Gee 66). I also felt that while the "Psychosocial Moratorium Principle" (Gee 64) holds true, sometimes risk in the real world can help one learn valuable lessons not possible in a reduced risk environment such as a video game. In subsequent paragraphs I will expand upon these statements using logical reasoning and personal experience. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unlike video games, the consequences I faced were tangible and irreversible. Suppose that I was photographing a hawk flying. • 77. A Report On Passive Solar Architecture PASSIVE SOLAR ARCHITECTURE INTRODUCTION:1 The last two decade has witnessed a severe energy crisis in developing countries especially during summer season primarily due to cooling load requirements of buildings. The energy consumption in buildings is quite high and is expected to further increase because of improving standards of life and increasing world population. Air conditioning use has increasingly penetrated the market during the last few years and greatly contributes in the upsurge of absolute energy consumption. INTRODUCTION 2: Buildings account for at least 40% of energy use in most countries. The construction sector in India is witnessing a fast growth due to several factors. Some of the key growth drivers are increased demand for housing, strong demographic impetus, expansion of organized retail, increased demand for commercial office spaces by multinationals and IT (information technology) hubs, and coming up of SEZs (special economic zones). The gross built–up area added to commercial and residential spaces was about 40.8 million square metres in 2004/05, which is about 1% of annual average constructed floor area around the world, and the trend shows a sustained growth of 10% over the coming years. With a near consistent 8% rise in annual energy consumption in the residential and commercial sectors, energy consumption in buildings has seen an increase from a low of 14% in the 1970s to nearly 33% in 2004/05.
