Atticus Finch Compassion
"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view– until you
climb in his skin and walk around in it," says Atticus Finch. This iconic quote from Harper Lee's To
Kill a Mockingbird highlights the compassion for others that shows up several times in the story.
Empathy is a prevalent theme in To Kill a Mockingbird and is displayed by several characters.
Atticus Finch is one of the most compassionate characters. He sets an example for his kids, who also
learn to empathize. Several other characters besides the Finch family show compassion for each
other. The title of the novel itself symbolizes empathy for the innocent and accentuates the role of
compassion in this novel.

In court, Tom said that the reason he helped Mayella Ewell was because he "felt right sorry for her,
she seemed to try more'n the rest of 'em " (Lee, 197). Feeling sorry for Mayella became his only
crime. After the trial, Miss Maudie sympathized with Jem, telling him that not everyone was against
Tom; in fact, people like Judge Taylor, Heck Tate, and of course Atticus were for him. When Tom
was shot, most of Maycomb didn't care, but Mr. Underwood of The Maycomb Tribune "likened
Tom's death to the senseless slaughter of songbirds by hunters and children" (Lee, 241). He
recognized that Tom was innocent and his death was undeserved. Sheriff Heck Tate showed
empathy for Boo Radley after Mr. Ewell attacked the Finch children. He says, "To my way of
thinkin', Mr. Finch, taking the one man who's done you and this town a great service an' draggin'
him with his shy ways into the limelight–to me, that's a sin. It's a sin and I'm not about to have it on
my head" (Lee, 276). He knew Boo wouldn't be able to cope with the stress of being the town's
celebrity, so he decided to pretend that Mr. Ewell fell on his own knife and the children got away by
themselves. Several people in Maycomb cared for each other and looked at things from another's
point of view. Many characters in To Kill a Mockingbird demonstrated empathy throughout the
novel. Atticus strived to understand what other people were going through in all situations.

Jem Finch Climax
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, the author Harper Lee conveys that being different can lead to
being brave. In the book there are many events that led up to the main climax. The story takes place
in a small town in Alabama named Maycomb, where there may be the strangest characters anyone
could think of. Jean Louise Finch but also known as "Scout" is taking place as the narrator, Jem
Finch as her brother, and Atticus Finch who is an outstanding lawyer with high morals, are all the
main characters of the impacting novel. When the story begins, there is a hard impact of a strange
character that everyone seem to be interested in, this character is the infamous Boo Radley from the
Radley place. The children, Scout, Jem, and a new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Atticus has been asked to be lawyer of his case as he is the only one compatible to do so, and a new
journey begins. The trial had involved rape and abuse along with lying under the oath of honesty.
The trial was very hard to the point where the jury had decided that Tom Robinson was guilty even
if the facts and logic were as clear as day that it could hurt someone's eyesight, but the word of a
black man could never be trusted against a white woman's. It was surprising for the folks of
Maycomb that the Ewell's, also known as "trash" in the county of Maycomb could have won the
case. It was even more unexpected that even after the astonishing and realistic speech from Atticus
about equality and rationality the case was denied. Even after having the chance to actually turn the
tables, Tom was killed with seventeen merciless bullets. An unexpected visit has come before all of
the trial had happened and the name of the new character is Aunt Alexandra, the sister of Atticus
Finch. As soon as she came she had tried to shape and change the already stable family in the
traditional Finch's. Although she does this, she's quite one of the most extraordinary strong woman

Atticus Finch
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is one of the most classic novels of American literature which
has withstood the test of time, continuing to teach the reader the lessons that Atticus teaches his own
children. Set in the 1930's, the novel follows the story of Scout Finch's childhood adventures during
a critical time in her life where the things she learns will be inculcated into her disposition for the
rest of her life since she is in her developmental years making it important for Atticus to parent them
the way he does. For this reason, Atticus Finch, her father who is a respectable and unbiased lawyer,
instills the good morals which he himself possesses into his daughter Scout and son Jem. During this
time period, authoritative parenting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout the novel, Jem and Scout get into mischief as young children might do. One particular
instance would be when Jem destroyed Mrs. Dubose's camellia garden because he was angry about
the nasty comments he heard about his father from the women. As a result of his actions, Atticus
gives Jem the consequence of reading to Mrs. Dubose. At first to Jem this punishment appears to be
rather bothersome until his father enlightens him about the reason for the implementation of this
specific consequence. Atticus orders to Jem, "Then you'll do it for a month"(Lee 105). This
consequence had the job of teaching Jem the lesson about what real courage is. Courage does not
have to be something grandiose or as the example in the novel puts it, courage does not have to be a
man with a gun in his hand, it could be anything that's conquered by someone who sees the task as
frightening. In the situation of Mrs. Dubose, she was addicted to morphine and refused to die
addicted to the drug. For her, this task seemed impossible but with courage she overcame the
obstacle. For Jem to learn this lesson, reading to the older women provided him with a first hand
experience of real courage. According to Cornell University, children who receive consequences and
are parented in an authoritative household "[...] are

Atticus Finch Hero
"Atticus as a Hero" Atticus Finch is from Maycomb County, Alabama a town where pride was
everything. Mr. Finch is the towns most trusted lawyer. Atticus also serves on the Alabama State
Legislature for Maycomb County. Atticus, in his late fifties, has two children Jean Louise, "Scout,"
Finch and Jeremy, "Jem" Finch. Atticus will endure his hardest court case, in this small town and
will be a hero to some, and an enemy to others. Mr. Finch in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird is a
hero due to his honesty, his courage, and his want to persevere in hard times for all. Atticus Finch
must be honest and stay true to his word by being the man of better judgment. He must make hard
decisions without bias toward another group or person. Scout asked Atticus why he must defend
Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman, Atticus responded, "For a number of
reasons, Atticus said. The main one is, if I didn't I couldn't hold my head up in town, I couldn't

In spite of this he preserves through tough times and tries to do right by his kids. After Boo Radley
killed Bob Ewell at the end, Atticus did not want to lose his kids and said this, "If I convened at
something like this, frankly I couldn't meet his eyes, and the day I can't do that I'll know I've lost
him. I don't want to lose him and Scout, because there all I got." (Lee, 273) Atticus knows that the
upcoming trial would be lost because that in order to keep a good look on things, he would need to
keep strong, and push through the criticism. He also thought that his children need to learn to work
hard for what they wanted and he said "shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit 'em, but
remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." (Lee, 90) Atticus also did not want his children to take

Atticus Finch Symbolism
Another example of a symbolic Mockingbird, in To Kill a Mockingbird, is Atticus Finch because of
the many qualities he shares with a mockingbird in the book. First, all throughout the book, Atticus
treats the children like adults rather than children. Atticus knows that Scout and Jem like it when
they are treated like adults because they are treated like children every where else. Like a
Mockingbird, Atticus brings joy to Scout and Jem by treating them with respect. Also, In the
begging of the book, Scout doesn't want to go to school anymore because of the misfortunes that
happened that day. Atticus gives her a piece of advise, "If you just learn a single trick, Scout, you'll
get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really

Atticus Finch Quotes
One of the most moving characters in the 20th century American Literature is Atticus Finch.
Because of his significant intelligence, calm wisdom, and admirable behavior, Atticus was respected
by everyone in Maycomb, even the poor. Atticus Finch is one of the most authentic and noble
characters in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and his character remains, constant throughout
To Kill a Mockingbird. He began as a honorable citizen who was admired and respected by his
neighbors and even when he lost the trial, but still in the end, he was still looked up to, both of his
children and all levels of the community. As a lawyer in To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch

Atticus preached the wisdom of sympathy and understanding to Jem and Scout and never holds
grudges against anyone in Maycomb. Atticus was older than many other fathers, which embarrassed
Jem and Scout, but Atticus's wise parenting quotes, "Before Jem looks at anyone else he looks at
me, and I've tried to live so I can look squarely back at him," which ultimately wins their respect for
him. Another respectable thing he taught his children was how to be literate. He recognizes the
importance of teaching Jem and Scout how to respect others and learn about courage. An important
example, when Mr. Dubose was dying, he made Jem go read to her, which leads up to a crucial
lesson about strength and courage by stating "I wanted you to see what real courage is...it's when
you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through, no matter
what." The most important aspect in the major themes in To Kill a Mockingbird, was that he didn't
just tell his children things he wanted them to consider important, he actually lives according to such
lessons. For example, even though he knows he will not win the case and is "licked" he goes ahead
and pursues it anyway. As a father his most important role seems to be as a guidance above all else
and his children, much like the rest of the community respect him

Atticus Finch Injustice
The general topic in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, is criticising helpless people
that have done no harm, and how it is a terrible deed. In the Novel a Mockingbird is a symbol of one
of these helpless people. In part 1 of the novel, characters such as Boo Radley and Tom Robinson
are portrayed as "mockingbirds". The general topic also represents injustice, especially in the south.
Atticus Finch is presented as seeker of justice that believes in equality for all, as well as one of the
few characters to never rethink an opinion. Furthermore, Atticus is the father of Scout and Jem
Finch, who he treats like adults and answeres all questions honestly as he would to any other

When being morally courageous you have the ability to overcome barriers created by society and
others. One fictional character who demonstrates moral courage is Atticus Finch. Atticus welcomes
Walter Cunningham into his home for that night's supper as he would any other house guest. He
does not treat him differently just because he comes from a financially struggling family. Atticus
respects Walter for who he is and does not let their differences get in the way. As a result of Atticus's
equal treatment to all, he engages in conversations as he would with any other adult. "While Walter
piled food on his plate, he and Atticus talked like two men to the wonderment of Jem and me.
Atticus was expounding on farm problems" (Lee, 27). One of the most important characteristics of
morally courageous person is that they remain with their beliefs despite consequences. In this case,
treating all maycomb members equally including the cunninghams is a small act that shows much
morality. Atticus puts aside what maycomb county members think about the cunninghams such as
walter, but treats him like any other adult maycomb county member. Atticus's behaviour in
conversations, help reflect his primary character trait, such as

Scout Finch
Life is unpredictable, good and bad things are inevitable. Things are going to happen that will
change you forever. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee there are young kids that all
experience things that help them mature and change quicker than most children their age, but as you
know everything happens for a reason. For example, there is a young girl named Jean Louise, but
she goes by the name of Scout Finch, she is a total tomboy,at the start of the story she is about six
years old and narrates the story, the story goes on until she is about nine but she tells the story as an
adult. Scout Finch is unsuspecting, she will always say what is on her mind, even if it is totally
random. Scout Finch is full of rage and temper, if she has a problem, she would much rather solve it
with her fists opposed to reasoning through it, as the story progresses on she becomes awake in the
world, after going through things such as being a witness for the Tom Robinson case where she
learns about people being prejudiced, after being judgeful against people she doesn't even know,
even though she eventually learns what a great guy Arthur (Boo) Radley really is, ... Show more

House, but as the story progresses on he begins to realize that after all he had gone through touching
that house was not brave, what's brave is Atticus facing a vicious dog, or even how Scout confronted
those guys in front of the jail. Jem goes through the same thing every other teenage boy does, which

Atticus Finch Integrity
Atticus Finch is a lawyer in Maycomb, Alabama. Atticus goes to jury for a black person names Tom
robinson. He is a character in the pulitzer prize winner book, To kill a mockingbird by Harper Lee.
Atticus is taking a stand for Tom Robinson because he got accused of rape. Atticus does take a stand
for Tom Robinson. He is a caring person and is integrity.
First reason is Atticus is a caring person. Atticus defends a black person named Tom Robinson of
being accused of rape. "Do you defend niggers Atticus?" I asked that evening." "Of course i do.
Don't say nigger Scout, That's common." pg.99 Atticus was defending a nigger because he doesn't

"If Atticus Finch drunk until he was drunk he wouldn't be as hard as some men at their best." pg.46
Atticus would work harder than most people even when he is completely drunk. Atticus is saying we
get what happens in the end either good or bad like if you were upset or not. "Atticus was saying,
with people like us – that's all our share of the bill we generally get the jures we deserve. pg.292
Atticus was saying he's gonna share even if it's bad or not.
Some might say that it does not make sense for Atticus to take a stand. Some might say Atticus
shouldn't take the stand because Tom is a black person and they might not want a white person
taking a stand for a black person. Atticus is going to the jury to stick up for Tom. "Before I'm
through I intend to jury a bit – I think we'll have appeal" pg.117 However, That reinforces that
Atticus is a caring and strong person. If he defends a black people that makes him a caring person.
Since Atticus is a caring and integrity person he should take a stand. Atticus demonstrated of being a
caring person by helping Tom Robinson out of being accused of rape. Atticus demonstrated his
integrity because he's sharing with others and he takes care of his family. Atticus is a strong person
so he needs to take a stand because you wouldnt want to run into Bob Ewell. Some would rather run

Scout Finch Quotes
If your father was being ridiculed and made fun of all throughout your town, would you be loyal
enough to defend him? Loyalty is one of the many attributes that a little girl in the book, To Kill a
Mockingbird, has. Harper Lee is the author of this book, and she portrays Jean Louise in many
diverse ways. Throughout the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Jean Louise Finch, demonstrates that she
is very naive, intelligent, and loyal. Jean Louise Finch, or better known as Scout Finch, is very
naive. In the book, Scout was very frightened when she looked out the window one morning and
saw snow. She said "Next morning I awoke, looked out the window, and nearly died of fright. My

This quote shows that she is very naive, and she overreacted when she saw snow. Scout Finch is a
very intelligent girl. Before she even attended her first year of school, she already knew how to read
and write, and she was very good at it too. Scout recalls that, "I could not remember when the lines
above Atticus's moving finger separated into words, but I had stared at them all the evenings in my
memory, listening to the news of the day, Bills to be Enacted into Laws, the diaries of Lorenzo
Dow– anything Atticus happened to be reading when I crawled into his lap every night" (Lee 23).
This quote shows that Scout was reading and understanding very advanced words when she was
really little. Scout Finch is very loyal. She is most loyal to her father, Atticus, especially when
Atticus is defending a Negro man at trial, and the town was not very kind to him. Whenever Scout
heard someone say something bad about her father, she immediately became angry and would beat
up whomever she had to. In the book, Scout says, "With this in mind, I faced Cecil Jacobs in the
school–yard the next day: 'You gonna take that back

The Finch Family
The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee follows the Finch family through the hardships of
the 1930s. The story takes place in fictitious Maycomb County, Alabama during the 1930s, when
there were many racial issues such as the Jim Crow Laws. The Finch family consists of Jean Louise,
nicknamed Scout, her brother Jeremy Finch, nicknamed Jem, and their father Atticus Finch who is
one of the most prestigious lawyers in Maycomb County. The family experiences first hand, the

For example, as the Tom Robinson trial was nearing an end, Jem was disappointed with guilty
verdict and "his shoulders jerked as if each 'guilty' was a separate stab between them."(282). Jem
starts to feel that everyone has betrayed Tom because of his skin color, thus, causing Jem to lose
trust in the people that he has grown close to. For instance, during the cross–examination, Dill
finally realized that no matter what the white family will always win so "Dill started crying and
couldn't stop."(265). Dill suddenly felt the hatred towards Tom and all of the blacks. So, he finally
understands the issues from a black's perspective. Likewise, when Scout finally realizes all of the
items that Boo has given, she thinks of poorly of herself because "We never put back into the tree
what we took out of it; we had given him nothing."(373).This shows that Scout finally realizes what
Boo has done for them, and they didn't do anything in return. This causes her to look at herself and

Essay On Atticus Finch
In the classic To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, a book set in the 1940's during the Great

humility, compassion, and high moral standards as he defends an innocent black man being
prosecuted for a rape he did not commit because of the color of his skin.
Atticus Finch is a character of stability in a society going through one of the biggest economical

the people of his town he has chosen to live his life on his own terms and to try and teach those
values and morals to his children. In a world of prejudice and inequality, Atticus does not change his
belief that all individual are equal and none should be judged based upon the based on the color of

lesson to the kids when he told them, "You never really understand a person until you consider life

the core of Atticus belief and the belief he tries to give his children. Throughout the novel Harper

Atticus Finch Traits
Times are always changing and new ideas are born every day, nothing is static. New ideas, always
need a radical man or women to help the world see that there are better ways of thinking. The small
town of Maycomb county, in Harper Lee's book To Kill a Mocking Bird, had their man to bring
them into this new era of thinking, Atticus Finch. His gentle attitude shows an outstanding amount
of kindness, determination, and wisdom. He is faced with difficulties that have been around all his
life, and he never once falters in his character. His journey of trying to help Maycomb change, to
show that every man is equal, is a battle that is worth telling. Atticus Finch is a man of unwavering
character. He sticks to his virtues and is simple, kind man. For example, when Atticus walks past
Mrs. Dubose's house every day, he always greets her with a smile and wishes her a wonderful day.
He does this in spite of the fact that he knows she calls him a nigger lover. He would always be a
gentleman to Mrs. Dubose and say, "Good evening, Mrs. Dubose! You look like a picture this
evening."(133) His acts of kindness even in the face of cruelty show how true of a man that Atticus

and stood there as Mr. Ewell called him names. When Mr. Ewell calls him a coward for not fighting
him Atticus says, "No, too old,"(291) and he strolls on. Atticus knows when it is wiser to walk on
than to let his actions ruin all of his good work. It is said that a man who walks away from a fight is

Atticus Finch Identity
Personal Essay by David Kraus Identity is the distinguishing character or personality of an
individual. Families can play a huge role in establishing and shaping identity in a manner that can be
either beneficial or detrimental. Similarly, in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee illustrates
through the Finch family that families should instil values, morals, and life lessons so one can
develop into a healthy, productive, and moral person. However, families like the Ewells, who fail to
protect, teach, love, and guide with positive influences and surroundings, will lead to a negative and
non ethical identity of children. Mr. Atticus Finch is a role model for his children, Jeremy and Jean
Louise, or as better known Jem and Scout. Finch positively shapes his children's identities through
teachings, life lessons, morals and values. Firstly, Scout and Jem being naive, curious, and little
adolescents, do not understand the meaning of some words such as rape. This leads to them to ask
their father Atticus about the meaning of the word rape. Although some parents would not explain
those types of words to their young children, Finch believes it is always best to tell the truth and be
honest:"When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness' sake." (page 87) Finch
believes evasion confuses children. Finch's way of answering his children's questions with honesty
and the hundred percent truth helps satisfy their curiosity and provides Scout and Jem more insight

Essay on Atticus Finch
It is widely believed that Atticus Finch is one of the greatest heroes of modern literature. My opinion
varies greatly with this remark. Atticus Finch is not a hero because he only had greater morals than
the people of his time, he wanted to be a good role model for his children, and was only doing his
job as a lawyer. It was his responsibility to defend Tom Robinson and give him an honest trial. He
may have done things out of the way, but that was just to demonstrate his point. Atticus also never
did anything for the benefit of other people. He only put himself in danger to prove his point. One of
the leading reasons to think that Atticus Finch is not a hero is because he was merely doing his job.

Many everyday heroes such as firefighters and doctors save lives everyday. It is their job to save the
lives of people. Atticus Finch's job is not to save lives, only to provide a fair trial. Other heroes such
as Superman are constantly putting themselves in danger to protect the lives of people. Atticus put
himself in danger once to prove his point. He didn't even need to put himself in danger. It was not
necessary for his cause to put himself in danger, he only wanted to protect Tom, which someone else
could have done. It was not his job to protect Tom, only to represent him. Atticus may have taken
the case because of Scout and Jem. He wanted to be a good role model for his children so they
would look up to him and follow in his footsteps. He wanted to set a good example for Scout and
Jem and teach them to stand up for what is right. He wanted his children to go against racial
prejudice and follow what they believe. You can prove this because in the book, Atticus tells Scout
to view everybody as equals. He even has Walter Cunningham over for dinner so he can prove this.
He believes that everybody should properly represented. Talmage Boston states in his selection of
the Texas bar journal from June, 2010 that Atticus "recognizes that a lawyer has a responsibility to
serve those who can't afford to pay." (Boston, 485) It may be argued that Atticus is a hero because
he defended Tom Robinson and went against many other people in the city. A

How Atticus's Character Relates to "I Won't Back Down"
Have you ever wondered what person truly represents the meaning of courage and strength? That
person is Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. The reader appreciates and looks up to Atticus
because he demonstrates his mental endurance and courage through standing up to society and doing
what he thinks is right, and the song "I Won't Back Down" buy Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers
explains that these qualities are admirable which is why Atticus is such a likeable and relatable
character.

The main message the song is trying to convey is not to give up or "back down" no matter how
strenuous and hard it gets. Another message the song is trying to tell is not to let society change your
morals, and do what you think is right no matter how the world reacts. We can relate these messages
and song lyrics to Atticus Finch in many ways. There is a scene in To Kill a Mockingbird when Mrs.
Dubose called Atticus "no better than the n*****s and trash he works for" (Lee 135). Instead of
losing his head and getting angry he stood to what he believed and told Scout that " They're
certainly entitled to think that, and they're entitled to full respect for their opinions, but before I can
live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is
a person's conscience". (Lee 139–140). This scene relates to the song because we can see here how
Atticus doesn't let society or people's words drag him and his morals down, and that is one of the
biggest messages the song is trying to tell. Another way Mr. Finch's personality relates to "I Won't
Back Down" is how strong Atticus's mental endurance is. In the song there is a part where Tom
Petty says "Well I know what's right, I got just one life, In a world that keeps on pushin' me around,
But I'll stand my ground and I won't back down" ( Petty "I Won't Back Down"). These lyrics mean
that he

Atticus Finch Standards
As one of the most controversial novels and top banned school books, To Kill a Mockingbird has it's
uniqueness. In the story, one of the most important character is Atticus Finch. He is a white lawyer of
the fictional Maycomb County and the father of 2 children, Scout and Jem. Although the Maycomb
society is always portrayed as peaceful and reasonable , the reality underneath their skin is a
"disease" that Atticus Finch says most of the people in Maycomb have. "Reasonable people go stark
raving mad when anything involving a Negro comes up." It is caused by invisible "standards" that
basically everyone follows. You do not have to follow these standards however, if you choose to do
so then your reputation will be ruined. One of the society's "standards" is to not help a black person.
Atticus is a character that lives by his own standards and believes that you always have to do the
right thing no matter what happens. He always had an excellent reputation in the society until he
decided to defend Tom Robinson, an innocent black man that is accused of raping a white
woman. He was chosen to defend Tom Robinson so he could've simply chose follow the society's
standards by giving zero effort in defending Tom however, what makes Atticus Finch such a great

Atticus Finch Moral
"You never know a man until you put on his shoes and walk around in them," Atticus Finch said in
to To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic story about the struggle
for racial equality. It is set in Alabama in the 1930's and tells the story of a single father Atticus
Finch who is raising two children, Jem and Scout. Atticus is an attorney who is firm in his desire to
teach his children not to see the color of a person's skin. Atticus is a strong, consistent character who
shows morality and tremendous wisdom while seeking justice for others throughout the story.
One important characteristic that makes up Atticus Finch is morality. Morality is Atticus's backbone.
Everything Atticus does revolves around his morals. He is always getting on to Scout for beating up
kids and for opening her mouth. He believes she should just keep the peace and not start anything.
The way he defends Tom Robinson also shows his morals. One of his morals is respect. He treats
men and woman with respect every single day. For example, one day when Atticus is sitting on a
bench reading a newspaper, some men come up and try to start things with him. Even when the men
spit in his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He makes many wise statements in the novel like "Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit
'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." That is a wise statement because Tom Robinson
is like a mockingbird in the story. Another wise statement is "You rarely win, but sometimes you
do." Everything he does he thinks over and analyzes, so he acts wisely. He acts out of courage. Even
when he knows he cannot win, he sees things through. He never wants to say the wrong thing or act
out in anger. Although Atticus never gets truly angry, he still believes in peace. He wishes everyone
would just get along. He wants people to be nice to each other rather than lashing out and falsely
accusing people of crimes they did not

In many circumstances, people show different ways of reacting to a problem. People react with
anger, or revenge. Yet some react with wisdom and level–headedness. Although fictional, the
character Atticus Finch from Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird has the attributes of the wise
father figure of the classic novel. Atticus never spoke out against anyone or acted for his own
selfishness; but kept his eyes focused on the ones he loved. Through all the persecution he had faced
from the town, he kept his head high and fought for what he thought would bring justice. Atticus
wanted Jem and Scout to avoid and witness the injustice the town faces. Therefore, in Harper Lee's
novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the character, Atticus Finch, displays a Christ–like heart of
compassion, a justice seeking stature and the wisdom of a righteous man.
Throughout the entire book, Atticus treated people with compassion and kindness. Anytime Atticus
spent time with his children, it seemed as though they were his whole world. When he read with
Scout, he gave thorough care to her. Then with Calpurnia, he treated her as if she grew up in the
same home. Atticus has the heart of a person that loves no matter what race or what background that
person had. All in all, Atticus not only care for each and every one he knew, but genuinely ... Show

truth. "...this case should never have come to trial. This case is as simple as black and white" (206).

Atticus Finch Interpretation
The wise Atticus Finch introduces this excerpt from Harper Lee's only novel, To Kill a Mockingbird,
as he gives his daughter, Scout Finch, fatherly advice. This novel, set during the time of the Great
Depression, explains the story of siblings Scout and Jem Finch. One summer, Scout, Jem, and a
friend, Dill Baker, decide they want to see the town's recluse, Boo Radley, for the first time. In the
meantime, their father, Atticus Finch, is defending a black man, Tom Robinson, on trial for raping a
poor white girl. Tom is falsely accused, and the children soon are involved in the case. Tom is
sentenced to a death penalty, and this really affects the children. Later on, Jem and Scout are almost
killed by the white girl's father, Bob Ewell, but Boo Radley saves them by killing Bob. One of the
most important themes of To Kill a Mockingbird is "walking around in someone else's skin". ...

The complete quote is, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his
point of view... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it" (Lee 39). In other words, this is
an expression meaning do not judge a person until having lived their life, or are in their position. For
example, Scout and Jem heard rumors about Boo Radley, but when Scout saw him for the first time,
her judgments changed. She realized how truly innocent he was. After her horrible first day of
school, Atticus tells his daughter that it is not right for her to decide what she thinks of a person
before knowing the facts. This is basically what happens to Tom Robinson during the trial. The town
judges him based on the color of his skin, not the evidence or his character. There are many sayings

Atticus Finch Courageous
In the historical fiction novel, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, character Atticus defines
courage as, "When you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it
through no matter what." (149). In other words, courage is when something that have consequences
is overcome and done. By looking at the actions of Atticus, Calpurnia, and Dolphus Raymond, one
can see they are courageous by the way the deal with challenges in their lives regarding segregation.
Atticus Finch, a single father of two children, Jem and Scout, shows courage what he stands up for
Tom Robinson. For example, people spit harsh words at Atticus after finding out he was defending
Tom Robinson in a court case. Cecil Jacobs, a fellow classmate, said to Scout, "My Folks said your
daddy is a disgrace an' that n****** oughta hang from the water–tank!" (102). People around
Atticus are not fond of black people, and therefore are opposed to Atticus defending a black man.
However, Atticus went against them because he knows better than to treat one race differently than

lucky to have a father who does not agree with the mindset of racism. He guides them with his good

Maycomb, but Scout and Jem were not satisfied with the verdict due to Atticus' teachings. In
addition, he has many good traits which Scout and Jem look up to. He is highly respected in town
because of his no–nonsense lawyering. Atticus showed his bravery and commitment when he took a
case he knew he would lose, and Jem and Scout admire him for it. He also showed his children a
lesson through his actions and is a very good influence for them. As well, he teaches them valuable
lessons which ultimately change who they end up to be. For example, "You never really understand

The day after the significant trial in Maycomb, a humiliated Bob Ewell threatens Atticus. "Atticus
was leaving the post office when Mr. Ewell approached him, cursed him, spat on him and threatened

is what it takes to prompt equality in Maycomb, it is a necessary sacrifice. Later on, Atticus shows
courage when he stands guard outside the courthouse the day before the trial to protect Tom

Atticus Finch Quotes
Do you ever read a book and that one character just reaches through the pages and connects with
you? Well this is the exact thing that happened to me when I was reading To Kill a Mockingbird.
Atticus Finch is a passionate and fighting character in this story, I chose Mr.Finch to do my analysis
over because he is a character that I connect with. Atticus Finch is willing to do anything for the
people he loves and cares about. In my character analysis I will be showing this be giving evidence
and quotes. The first topic I would like to present is the type of father Atticus Finch is. In the book
we see just how well presented of a dad Mr.Finch is. He always puts his kid before him, and
example of this is the night at the jail when Atticus wants his kids to go home before the
confrontation escalates. We can see that he is a good father because of how well taken care his
children are. A quote to support Atticus' parenting is when he is talking to scout about a fight that
she had gotten into. Atticus states "you just hold your head high and keep those fists down".

doesn't mean that he can't try to help Tom. In this section of the story it also means that Atticus is
indifferent to the racial issue going on during this case (Tom Robinson is an African American).By
all of the components in this section it shows that no matter what the situation is Atticus will always

Atticus Finch Change
Common men struggle to adapt to change, but over time change may contribute to meaningful
results in terms of a social aspect. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee,
cruelty inflicted on major characters contribute to the idea of change leading to meaningful results
within the novel. Cruelty reveals many characteristics about characters named; Atticus Finch, Tom

a division of characters including Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson, and Mayella Ewell through social

Specifically, Lee creates sympathy for Mayella at the trial. For instance, she seems very timid and
nervous. Mayella feels threatened by Atticus and his confidence, she begins to cry. The poor girl
does not know what to do. Readers can infer Mayella knows the truth, but is too scared to expose it.
Overall, Mayella feels the need to save her father's reputation. However, Atticus is not the one
causing the cruelty, and it also is not the judge, or Tom. The one being cruel to Mayella is her father.
Mr. Ewell's cruelty becomes evident during the trial when Atticus was giving his evidence of why
Tom was innocent. The readers now know Mr. Ewell, her own father, was abusing her and now
forcing her to lie about it. Therefore, the reader does not know what to think because Mayella is
supposed to be the enemy, but now mixed feelings in the reader arise. Is Mayella the antagonist, or
is she the protagonist in the situation? The cruelty towards Mayella Ewell shifts readers feelings
towards the trial. Using characters like Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson, and Mayella Ewell are all
examples of the idea of both the good and bad results created from cruelty. The novel, To Kill A

The Beak of the Finch Summary
The Beak of the Finch by Jonathan Weiner explores evolution through the most famous examples in
history–the finches of the Galápagos Islands. Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection and the
process of evolution are applied directly to what scientists refer to as Darwin's Finches. Weiner
follows scientists Peter and Rosemary Grant as they study the finches in real time on the Galápagos.
Years of previous work, study and data is collected and analyzed. Different species of animals are
observed and explained throughout history. The Grants have one goal, and that is to find the origin
of the species, how organisms first began. They find that it really is about the "survival of the ...

The Grants observed how the two ground finches preformed while attempting to obtain a seed called
a Caltrop. Caltrops naturally have spikes around the seed as a defense against intruders. The
Magnirostris did not have a hard time cracking open the Caltrop, with its hard, powerful jaw.
However the Fortis would have to put more effort into cracking a single seed. The regular Fortis
would try for six times and then give up, moving on to another seed. They will often move onto a
different seed without trying. However the Fortis with a beak that is slightly deeper beak would
attempt to crack the caltrop, and after a few tries, will succeed. The Grant's are capable of studying
Darwin's theory of natural selection in action, after gathering data from their colleagues, Peter Boag
and Laurene Ratcliffe, who would be their watch on Daphne Island. Peter and Laurene witnessed an
important event in natural selection, during a life or death situation with the finches. Though the two
scientists were anxious for rain, but they did not receive a single drop that season. Rain would mean
reproduction and fertility for the finches; however, the birds were faced with e horrible drought.
Food became scarce and the finch population declined. Easy seeds to obtain on the ground were
nearly gone. The seeds with tougher defenses, such as the caltrop, were usually untouched, since
they were hard to crack. The finches with inadequate beaks did not

A small population of finches have been discovered on Darwin and Wallace Island. The population
is 200 finches at Darwin Island, and 200 finches at Wallace Island. The year is 1997, and scientist
measured the finch beak size from both Darwin and Wallace Island. The finches from both island,

20.0 cm. Scientists want to determine if precipitation was to increase, would the finch beak increase
in size? In this lab study, scientist will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the 2nd experiment, the scientist decided to change the independent variable. The year would
continue to start in 1997. The size of the finch beak will remain 12.00 mm. Precipitation will be
changed to 9.0 cm for Darwin Island, and 5.0 cm for Wallace Island. If precipitation went down, the
size of the finch beak would increase. In 2096, the beak size for the Darwin Island finch was 18.59
mm, while the beak size for the Wallace island finch increase to 18.18 mm. The population
increased to 351 for the Darwin Island finch, and 444 for the Wallace Island finch.
On the 3rd experiment for Darwin Island, the independent variable was increased to 78.cm, while
the independent variable for Wallace Island increased to 68. cm. The precipitation increase at
Darwin and Wallace Island, indicated a decrease in beak size. The finch beak size in 2096, was
measured at 10.72 mm. The decrease of the finch beaks at Wallace island measured at 11.61 mm.
The population at Darwin Island increased to 682, while the finch population at Wallace Island
increased to 660.
Once the scientist finished analyzing the data collected they were able to determine if their
hypothesis was correct or incorrect. The final results of the scientific hypothesis was proved to be
incorrect. The scientist believed that if the precipitation was to increase at Darwin and Wallace
Island, the finch beak would enlarge in size. The data collected determined that the increase of

Atticus Finch
Prompt 1: Impact of a Literary Character (#18). A literary character that impacted me a lot this year
was Atticus Finch, from To Kill A Mockingbird. He stood apart from all the other characters to me
because of his honesty and integrity, and the way he always fought for what was right. Instead of
going with the flow of society, he held himself to a higher standard of living than did his peers. His
standards are summed up by the following statement: "Before I live with other folks, I've got to live
with myself."
Atticus was put in some tough situations, raising two kids on his own after his wife died, and then
representing Tom Robinson when no one else would. Through it all, he never complained, and never

The whole class text that impacted me the most this year was To Kill a Mockingbird, and it had a
number of themes. One of them that impacted me was the theme of what real character looks like.
Atticus has some good ideas about this: "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting
the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you
begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what."
Atticus shows his character by doing the right thing even when it's hard. While sometimes the
wrong thing is the easier thing to do, Atticus knows that you can't lie to yourself. "The one thing that
doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience," is a point he makes to his children.
At one point, Aunt Alexandra tries to kick Calpurnia, their black maid, out of the house. Atticus
again show his character by putting his foot down. He says, "Alexandra, Calpurnia's not leaving this
house until she wants to. You may think otherwise, but I couldn't have got along without her all
these years. She's a faithful member of this family and you'll simply have to accept things the way
they are." Once again, while it would have been easier and more convenient to just let Calpurnia go,
Atticus chose to do the right thing. The character that he shows throughout the story made a big

characteristics as Atticus. Dr. Zaher Sahloul is one of those people. He has many of the same
characteristics as Atticus, some being empathy and selflessness. The first reason is that he gives up
tons of time to help the refugees in Syria. It takes great amounts of time and effort to help people
from very far away. You have to be diligent and unwavering ... Show more content on

Helping people in Syria may help lives, but it also puts your own in great danger according to
several articles. Dr. Zaher Sahloul "has visited Aleppo five times since the war began" (Gonzalez).
He puts his life, and others, at risk in order to help people who can't help themselves. In one
interview Dr. Zaher Sahloul speaks of 'barrel bombs' that are dropped in Syria, "Barrel bombs are an
invention of the Syrian regime. Big barrels stuffed with TNT, half a ton of TNT and shrapnels, metal
shrapnel" (Gonzalez). He then goes on saying, "And they're thrown from helicopters on urban areas,
on hospitals, on blocks, on civilian neighborhoods, on fruit markets, on schools" (Gonzalez). So
many people have been injured by these bombs. One mother lost her four children in just one of
these 'barrel bombs', one of her children were yet to be born. Because of these bombs and plenty of
other risks, "people no longer trust offers of peace" ("A Chicago Doctor"). This makes it
significantly harder to help supply the hospitals with supplies as "supply routes are at risk"
(Spencer). Not only are the supply routes at risk but so are the hospitals filled with people. The place
that Dr. Zaher Sahloul goes to is "in rebel–held Syria, the most bombed patch of territory in the
world, where hospitals and doctors clinics are specifically targeted for attack" (Spencer). In this
place and other places in Syria there are several

Atticus Finch Quotes
The term "saint–like" is given to people who help other people without realizing and expect nothing
in return. The following quote strongly explains the qualities that Atticus Finch's character
possesses. "Goodness is about character – integrity, honesty, kindness, generosity, moral courage,
and the like. More than anything else, it is about how we treat other people. (Helen Keller)" In the
story To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Atticus, teaches his community what the meaning of
character is. Throughout the whole story Atticus Finch is fighting for equality and along the way he
raises his children into well rounded people by himself with no mother figure around. Atticus
teaches not only his kids, but the whole community, that skin color does not make a person who they
are. Atticus is saint–like in his code of honor as a lawyer, a father, and as a man. ... Show more

This quote explains how even though Atticus knew he would lose the case, he still tried his hardest
to emancipate Tom. Any other lawyer in Maycomb would have abandoned the case the moment they
found out he was a black man, but Atticus tried his best to fight the battle of racism. Atticus has
worked day in and day out on the case, even though he knew it was over from the beginning. Scout
said,"'Do all lawyers defend n–negroes, Atticus?'... 'I'm simply defending a negro– his name's Tom
Robinson...'"(75).This proves Atticus saw Tom as a human and does not want his children to just
think of him as a black. When Atticus says Tom, he emphasizes his humanity and who he is as a
person and not his skin color. Atticus represents his beliefs in equality while taking this case and
puts racial viewpoints behind as he chases after

Jem Finch Traits
At one point or another most people have run into someone that they assume is just an awful person
without first trying to understand them. These assumptions are a very human thing. In the title To
Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee creates a variety of characters that have to handle difficult,
emotionally exhausting, and unfair situations. One of those characters is Jem Finch
In the title To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee portrays Jeremy Atticus Finch as someone who is
kind, compassionate, but also emotionally charged and uses him to shows how people might still try
to handle situations they don't fully understand. It is seen how emotional Jem Finch can be many
times throughout the novel. One of the most important example of this character trait is when he
runs into Mrs. Dubose, a mean old lady seems to take pleasure from verbally tormenting the kids in
her neighborhood. She at first starts yelling at Jem's sister Scout and Jem ignores it, but then she
starts mocking jem's father, which makes him become irrational and causes him to smash all her
flowers. Atticus Finch later explains to Jem why she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One example of this would be when his father was at Tom Robinson's jail cell and a lynching mob
showed up. Jem knew that something is wrong, so when his father asked him to leave he said no, not
fully understanding what the mob was capable of. Another example was the one explained before
were mrs. Dubose mocked jem's father and Jem destroyed her flowers. Jem did not know that the
reason she acted the way she did was because she had been going through withdrawal. In both
situations you see how Jem did what most people would have done: He went with his first instinct
without first trying to understand what was really going on. From this it is seen how Jem fueled by
emotion, unawarly jumped right into complex

Scout Finch Innocence
In To Kill a Mockingbird there are multiple objects/characters that arise, but the symbol of the
mockingbird stands out the most in the novel as they serve as an image of innocence.
Numerous characters in the book symbolize the idea of not harming anyone that has not committed
any atrocious actions. One of these characters is Scout Finch, who is only six at the start of the
novel. This means that she is still trying to figure out everything while slowly maturing. Scout hasn't
been exposed to most of the world yet, which is why she acts so naïve. In To Kill a Mockingbird,
Atticus Finch, Scout's father, and Miss Maudie, a neighbor, explain: "Shoot all the blue jays you
want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird"

Atticus Finch Compassion

  • 1. Atticus Finch Compassion "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view– until you climb in his skin and walk around in it," says Atticus Finch. This iconic quote from Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird highlights the compassion for others that shows up several times in the story. Empathy is a prevalent theme in To Kill a Mockingbird and is displayed by several characters. Atticus Finch is one of the most compassionate characters. He sets an example for his kids, who also learn to empathize. Several other characters besides the Finch family show compassion for each other. The title of the novel itself symbolizes empathy for the innocent and accentuates the role of compassion in this novel. Atticus Finch, though he himself was ... Feeling sorry for Mayella became his only crime. After the trial, Miss Maudie sympathized with Jem, telling him that not everyone was against Tom; in fact, people like Judge Taylor, Heck Tate, and of course Atticus were for him. When Tom was shot, most of Maycomb didn't care, but Mr. Underwood of The Maycomb Tribune "likened Tom's death to the senseless slaughter of songbirds by hunters and children" (Lee, 241). He recognized that Tom was innocent and his death was undeserved. Sheriff Heck Tate showed empathy for Boo Radley after Mr. Ewell attacked the Finch children. He says, "To my way of thinkin', Mr. Finch, taking the one man who's done you and this town a great service an' draggin' him with his shy ways into the limelight–to me, that's a sin. It's a sin and I'm not about to have it on my head" (Lee, 276). He knew Boo wouldn't be able to cope with the stress of being the town's celebrity, so he decided to pretend that Mr. Ewell fell on his own knife and the children got away by themselves. Several people in Maycomb cared for each other and looked at things from another's point of view. Many characters in To Kill a Mockingbird demonstrated empathy throughout the novel. Atticus strived to understand what other people were going through in all situations. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Jem Finch Climax In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, the author Harper Lee conveys that being different can lead to being brave. In the book there are many events that led up to the main climax. The story takes place in a small town in Alabama named Maycomb, where there may be the strangest characters anyone could think of. Jean Louise Finch but also known as "Scout" is taking place as the narrator, Jem Finch as her brother, and Atticus Finch who is an outstanding lawyer with high morals, are all the main characters of the impacting novel. The trial had involved rape and abuse along with lying under the oath of honesty. The trial was very hard to the point where the jury had decided that Tom Robinson was guilty even if the facts and logic were as clear as day that it could hurt someone's eyesight, but the word of a black man could never be trusted against a white woman's. It was surprising for the folks of Maycomb that the Ewell's, also known as "trash" in the county of Maycomb could have won the case. It was even more unexpected that even after the astonishing and realistic speech from Atticus about equality and rationality the case was denied. Even after having the chance to actually turn the tables, Tom was killed with seventeen merciless bullets. An unexpected visit has come before all of the trial had happened and the name of the new character is Aunt Alexandra, the sister of Atticus Finch. As soon as she came she had tried to shape and change the already stable family in the traditional Finch's. Although she does this, she's quite one of the most extraordinary strong woman in this ... Atticus Finch To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is one of the most classic novels of American literature which has withstood the test of time, continuing to teach the reader the lessons that Atticus teaches his own children. Set in the 1930's, the novel follows the story of Scout Finch's childhood adventures during a critical time in her life where the things she learns will be inculcated into her disposition for the rest of her life since she is in her developmental years making it important for Atticus to parent them the way he does. One particular instance would be when Jem destroyed Mrs. Dubose's camellia garden because he was angry about the nasty comments he heard about his father from the women. As a result of his actions, Atticus gives Jem the consequence of reading to Mrs. Dubose. At first to Jem this punishment appears to be rather bothersome until his father enlightens him about the reason for the implementation of this specific consequence. Atticus orders to Jem, "Then you'll do it for a month"(Lee 105). This consequence had the job of teaching Jem the lesson about what real courage is. Courage does not have to be something grandiose or as the example in the novel puts it, courage does not have to be a man with a gun in his hand, it could be anything that's conquered by someone who sees the task as frightening. In the situation of Mrs. Dubose, she was addicted to morphine and refused to die addicted to the drug. For her, this task seemed impossible but with courage she overcame the obstacle. For Jem to learn this lesson, reading to the older women provided him with a first hand experience of real courage. Atticus was older than many other fathers, which embarrassed Jem and Scout, but Atticus's wise parenting quotes, "Before Jem looks at anyone else he looks at me, and I've tried to live so I can look squarely back at him," which ultimately wins their respect for him. Another respectable thing he taught his children was how to be literate. He recognizes the importance of teaching Jem and Scout how to respect others and learn about courage. An important example, when Mr. Dubose was dying, he made Jem go read to her, which leads up to a crucial lesson about strength and courage by stating "I wanted you to see what real courage is...it's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through, no matter what." The most important aspect in the major themes in To Kill a Mockingbird, was that he didn't just tell his children things he wanted them to consider important, he actually lives according to such lessons. • 30. Atticus Finch Identity Personal Essay by David Kraus Identity is the distinguishing character or personality of an individual. Families can play a huge role in establishing and shaping identity in a manner that can be either beneficial or detrimental. Similarly, in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee illustrates through the Finch family that families should instil values, morals, and life lessons so one can develop into a healthy, productive, and moral person. However, families like the Ewells, who fail to protect, teach, love, and guide with positive influences and surroundings, will lead to a negative and non ethical identity of children. Mr. Atticus Finch is a role model for his children, Jeremy and Jean Louise, or as better known Jem and Scout. Finch positively shapes his children's identities through teachings, life lessons, morals and values. Firstly, Scout and Jem being naive, curious, and little adolescents, do not understand the meaning of some words such as rape. This leads to them to ask their father Atticus about the meaning of the word rape. Although some parents would not explain those types of words to their young children, Finch believes it is always best to tell the truth and be honest:"When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness' sake." (page 87) Finch believes evasion confuses children. Finch's way of answering his children's questions with honesty and the hundred percent truth helps satisfy their curiosity and provides Scout and Jem more insight ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Essay on Atticus Finch It is widely believed that Atticus Finch is one of the greatest heroes of modern literature. My opinion varies greatly with this remark. Atticus Finch is not a hero because he only had greater morals than the people of his time, he wanted to be a good role model for his children, and was only doing his job as a lawyer. It was his responsibility to defend Tom Robinson and give him an honest trial. He may have done things out of the way, but that was just to demonstrate his point. Atticus also never did anything for the benefit of other people. He only put himself in danger to prove his point. He didn't even need to put himself in danger. It was not necessary for his cause to put himself in danger, he only wanted to protect Tom, which someone else could have done. It was not his job to protect Tom, only to represent him. Atticus may have taken the case because of Scout and Jem. He wanted to be a good role model for his children so they would look up to him and follow in his footsteps. He wanted to set a good example for Scout and Jem and teach them to stand up for what is right. He wanted his children to go against racial prejudice and follow what they believe. You can prove this because in the book, Atticus tells Scout to view everybody as equals. He even has Walter Cunningham over for dinner so he can prove this. He believes that everybody should properly represented. Talmage Boston states in his selection of the Texas bar journal from June, 2010 that Atticus "recognizes that a lawyer has a responsibility to serve those who can't afford to pay." The main message the song is trying to convey is not to give up or "back down" no matter how strenuous and hard it gets. Another message the song is trying to tell is not to let society change your morals, and do what you think is right no matter how the world reacts. We can relate these messages and song lyrics to Atticus Finch in many ways. There is a scene in To Kill a Mockingbird when Mrs. Dubose called Atticus "no better than the n*****s and trash he works for" (Lee 135). Instead of losing his head and getting angry he stood to what he believed and told Scout that " They're certainly entitled to think that, and they're entitled to full respect for their opinions, but before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience". (Lee 139–140). This scene relates to the song because we can see here how Atticus doesn't let society or people's words drag him and his morals down, and that is one of the biggest messages the song is trying to tell. Another way Mr. Finch's personality relates to "I Won't Back Down" is how strong Atticus's mental endurance is. In the song there is a part where Tom Petty says "Well I know what's right, I got just one life, In a world that keeps on pushin' me around, But I'll stand my ground and I won't back down" ( Petty "I Won't Back Down"). In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus is a lawyer in the town of Maycomb as well as the sole parent of Scout and Jem Finch. In Scout's and Jem's adventures of growing up, they are constantly being guided by Atticus. His words of wisdom and honesty keep them from straying too far from good morals. Atticus is caring and respectable; he is always doing what is best for his children. He guides them with his good morals and they listen to him: "'I just hope that Jem and Scout come to me for their answers instead of listening to the town.'" (117) The case of Tom Robinson showcases the extreme racism in Maycomb, but Scout and Jem were not satisfied with the verdict due to Atticus' teachings. In addition, he has many good traits which Scout and Jem look up to. He is highly respected in town because of his no–nonsense lawyering. Atticus showed his bravery and commitment when he took a case he knew he would lose, and Jem and Scout admire him for it. He also showed his children a lesson through his actions and is a very good influence for them. As well, he teaches them valuable lessons which ultimately change who they end up to be. For example, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." (39) These moral lessons separate his children from the rest of the racism–affected children of Maycomb. Being a non–prejudice lawyer in Maycomb, Atticus' good traits and moral lessons impact Scout and Jem's lives greatly and makes him an outstanding role model; a trait which all good fathers should ... Later on, Atticus shows courage when he stands guard outside the courthouse the day before the trial to protect Tom Robinson. "Atticus remained where he was. The men hid from view. He in there Mr. Finch? He is we heard Atticus answer and he's asleep, don't wake him up. You know what we want, another man said get aside from the door" (Lee 80). • 56. Atticus Finch Quotes Do you ever read a book and that one character just reaches through the pages and connects with you? Well this is the exact thing that happened to me when I was reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus Finch is a passionate and fighting character in this story, I chose Mr.Finch to do my analysis over because he is a character that I connect with. Atticus Finch is willing to do anything for the people he loves and cares about. In my character analysis I will be showing this be giving evidence and quotes. The first topic I would like to present is the type of father Atticus Finch is. In the book we see just how well presented of a dad Mr.Finch is. He always puts his kid before him, and example of this is the night at the jail when Atticus wants his kids to go home before the confrontation escalates. We can see that he is a good father because of how well taken care his children are. A quote to support Atticus' parenting is when he is talking to scout about a fight that she had gotten into. Atticus states "you just hold your head high and keep those fists down". (Chapter 6) Atticus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this section of the story it also means that Atticus is indifferent to the racial issue going on during this case (Tom Robinson is an African American).By all of the components in this section it shows that no matter what the situation is Atticus will always try to help those before helping himself. Beak of the Finch Chapter Summaries Eliel Pepito 8/1/10 The Beak of the Finch Summary The Beak of the Finch by Jonathan Weiner explores evolution through the most famous examples in history–the finches of the Galápagos Islands. Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection and the process of evolution are applied directly to what scientists refer to as Darwin's Finches. Weiner follows scientists Peter and Rosemary Grant as they study the finches in real time on the Galápagos. Years of previous work, study and data is collected and analyzed. Different species of animals are observed and explained throughout history. The Grants have one goal, and that is to find the origin of the species, how organisms first began. The Grants observed how the two ground finches preformed while attempting to obtain a seed called a Caltrop. Caltrops naturally have spikes around the seed as a defense against intruders. The Magnirostris did not have a hard time cracking open the Caltrop, with its hard, powerful jaw. However the Fortis would have to put more effort into cracking a single seed. The regular Fortis would try for six times and then give up, moving on to another seed. They will often move onto a different seed without trying. However the Fortis with a beak that is slightly deeper beak would attempt to crack the caltrop, and after a few tries, will succeed. The Grant's are capable of studying Darwin's theory of natural selection in action, after gathering data from their colleagues, Peter Boag and Laurene Ratcliffe, who would be their watch on Daphne Island. Peter and Laurene witnessed an important event in natural selection, during a life or death situation with the finches. Though the two scientists were anxious for rain, but they did not receive a single drop that season. Rain would mean reproduction and fertility for the finches; however, the birds were faced with e horrible drought. Food became scarce and the finch population declined. Easy seeds to obtain on the ground were nearly gone. The seeds with tougher defenses, such as the caltrop, were usually untouched, since they were hard to crack. He stood apart from all the other characters to me because of his honesty and integrity, and the way he always fought for what was right. Instead of going with the flow of society, he held himself to a higher standard of living than did his peers. His standards are summed up by the following statement: "Before I live with other folks, I've got to live with myself." The whole class text that impacted me the most this year was To Kill a Mockingbird, and it had a number of themes. One of them that impacted me was the theme of what real character looks like. Atticus has some good ideas about this: "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what." Atticus shows his character by doing the right thing even when it's hard. While sometimes the wrong thing is the easier thing to do, Atticus knows that you can't lie to yourself. "The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience," is a point he makes to his children. At one point, Aunt Alexandra tries to kick Calpurnia, their black maid, out of the house. Atticus again show his character by putting his foot down. He says, "Alexandra, Calpurnia's not leaving this house until she wants to. You may think otherwise, but I couldn't have got along without her all these years. She's a faithful member of this family and you'll simply have to accept things the way they are."
