3. The Constructionist Principle:
Words Create Worlds
Reality, as we know it, is a subjective vs.
objective state and is socially created
through language and conversations.
4. The Simultaneity Principle:
Inquiry Creates Change
Inquiry is an intervention. The moment we
ask a question, we begin to create a
change. “The questions we ask are fateful.”
5. The Poetic Principle:
We Can Choose What We Study
Teams and organizations, like open books,
are endless sources of study and learning.
What we choose to study makes a
difference. It describes – even creates – the
world as we know it.
6. The Anticipatory Principle:
Image Inspires Action
Human systems move in the direction of
their images of the future. The more positive
and hopeful the image of the future, the
more positive the present-day action.
7. The Positive Principle:
Positive Questions Lead to Positive
Change
Momentum for [small or] large-scale change
requires large amounts of positive affect and
social bonding. This momentum is best
generated through positive questions that
amplify the positive core.

Editor's Notes
David Cooperider 1987
1. Valuing …
The act of recognizing the best in people and the world around us;
Affirming past and present strengths, successes, and potentials;
To perceive those things that give life (health, vitality, and excellence) to living systems.
2. To increase in value, e.g. the economy has appreciated in value.
Synonyms: valuing, prizing, esteeming,and honoring.
The act of exploration and discovery.
2. To ask questions; to be open to seeing new potentials and possibilities.
Synonyms: discovery, search, studyand systematic exploration.
Basic assumption:
“problem-to-be solved”
Basic assumption: “mystery” organization is a web of strengths linked to infinite capacity, infinite imagination… alive
“No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it. We must learn to see the world anew.”
“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”
Comes out of academia:
Positive emotions are necessary to allow us to function well and think effectively
People will rise up or down to match our expectations of them – what we believe about others can influence what they can achieve
Medical studies – the placebo effect – what we believe is a powerful factor – it can even heal usVisualization is a powerful factor to create what we want
What will organizations get out of it?
