2. SCOPE: These instruction cover test
requirement and procedure for obtaining
desire parameters for electrical equipment in
the locomotive. Before producing with test
secure the proper schematic diagram for
specific locomotive for guidance during test.
3. CAUTION: Before making a high performing
test, the insulation resistance should be
cheeked with a 500V meager. Do not conduct
high potential test on a circuit with a meager
reading of less than 1 mega ohm as the
circuit may be demand.
4. Have multi conductor plugs attached to the
governor and tachometer generator.
Open the battery switch ,BS.
Open ground cut-switch GRCO1 & GRCO2.
Disconnect the battery lead in the battery in
the battery component the close the battery
switch-BS.
Close all switch and circuit breakers in the
component and on the control stand ,
Move engine control switch ECS to “RUN”
position .
5. Move reveres handle to forward or reveres
position. Breaking switch must be in
“motoring”. Move main handle to 6th Notch
position.
Remove EXCP, TRP PANEL CARDS. Tie all high-
voltage terminal point together on the
excitation panel. These points are 34B, 34,
34T, 34A, 34C, 34E, 34G, 34F, 34R, 23 and
40V.
In power circuit of rectifier unit, short AC
terminals(R,Y & B) and DC terminals (GA1 &
GA2). Put jumpers between AC and DC
terminal(R & GA 11).
Measure insulation power resistance between
blower motor terminal R-28 and locomotive
frame .
6. Tie a jumper from braided shut of CK-1 to
braided shunt of CK-2 & CK-3.
Measure insulation power resistance between
control circuit and locomotive frame.
Connect megger to a CK contactor and
ground.
Measure insulation power resistance between
power circuit and locomotive frame.
Measure insulation power resistance between
power and control circuit to be sure that
they are not tied togther.
7. Ground control circuit to locomotive frame.
Short out load ammeter with hi-pot wire.
Attach one terminal of high-potential
transformer to locomotive frame and other
side to any convenient point in the traction
motor such as main contact of a “P” or “S”
contactor.
Apply high potential:
a. New locomotive: apply 2000V for 1 min
b. Locomotive in service: apply 1500 for 1 min
Repeat insulation test
8. Check wiring and terminal board. Correct
loss connection and faulty insulation .
Close all switches and insulation.
Remove temporary ground.
Short out the battery charging ammeter with
high potential.
Attach underground side of high-potential
transformer to main moveable contact of CK
contactor.
Apply high potential of 680V for 1 min.
9. Open all switches. Set main handle and
engine control switch (ECS) to “idle”. Close
ground cutout switch GRCO 1 & 2. remove all
ties on control voltage terminal point and
insert back EXCP TRP & VRP panel card .
Remove all shorting/jumpers.
Reconnect battery lead. Make sure that leads
or connected correctly with respect to
battery polarity .
