HOW TO USE THE LIST OF
DANGEROUS GOODS
* Selection the proper shipping name
* Items listed by name
* Item not listed by name
40. M. Tayfour 40
Selection the proper
shipping name
Dangerous goods must be
assigned to one of the proper
shipping name shown in the
list of IATA DGR section 4.2
41. M. Tayfour 41
Items listed by name
The following apply when
articles or substances are
listed by name.
43. M. Tayfour 43
Some UN numbers have several
acceptable proper shipping names.
Examples: UN 1203 and UN 1950
Example 1: UN 1203
44. M. Tayfour 44
The proper shipping name for UN 1203 is,
therefore, either: Gasoline, Motor Spirit or Petrol.
45. M. Tayfour 45
UN 1950 is the UN number for 17
different types of Aerosols.
46. Some articles and substances are
listed with more than one UN number
M. Tayfour 46
47. M. Tayfour 47
Items not listed by name
You must not interpret the
absence of an article or
substance from the list as
either permitting or not
permitting its transport by air.
48. M. Tayfour 48
Items not listed by name
When assigning the proper
shipping name for an item not
listed by name, select the
entry which most accurately
describes that item
49. M. Tayfour 49
Items not listed by name
⢠If the item is not forbidden, classify it by
comparing its properties with the
classification criteria describe in section 3.
⢠There are two types of generic or n.o.s.
proper shipping names: specific n.o.s. and
general n.o.s. entries;
⢠The specific n.o.s. entries cover a group of
substances or articles of a particular
chemical or technical nature. For example:
Alcohols, n.o.s.
50. M. Tayfour 50
Items not listed by name
⢠The general n.o.s. entries apply to a group of
substances or articles meeting the criteria of one
or more classes or divisions. E.g. Corrosive
solid, n.o.s.
⢠If available, use the specific n.o.s. entry in
preference to the generic n.o.s.
⢠Where there is ANY doubt as to whether a non-
listed article or substance is permitted for
transport by air, or under what conditions, the
shipper and/or operator must consult the
appropriate national authority.
51. M. Tayfour 51
Items not listed by name
The symbol in the List of
Dangerous Goods identifies those
proper shipping names which
require the addition of a technical
name. The symbol is not part of the
proper shipping name.
55. M. Tayfour 55
How to allocate Proper Shipping Name & UN Number
Example 1 â (Specific Entries)
Methyl propanoate, is an Ether with a flash point of -2°C and an initial boiling point of
80oC and is not listed in IATA DGR 4.2
STEP 1 Determine the characteristics of the substance (using Material Safety
Data Sheet (MSDS), test results, flash point, boiling point etc.) Flash
point -2°C; initial boiling point 80°C
STEP 2 Check if forbidden: According to IATA DGR 2.1.1 and 4.2 â (Not
forbidden)
STEP 3 Classify the substance: Class 3 Packing Group II
STEP 4 Assign the proper shipping name that most accurately describes the
substance using Table 4.1.A
56. M. Tayfour 56
â
â â is not part of proper shipping name therefore, must not be shown
when using the proper shipping name i.e. documentation and marking.
57. ⢠Technical name is required to be
supplemented in brackets
Proper Shipping Name: Ethers, n.o.s.
(Methyl propanoate) rather than hazard
name: Flammable liquid, n.o.s. (Methyl
propanoate).
M. Tayfour 57
58. M. Tayfour 58

Mixtures and Solutions with Single Hazard
A mixture or solution containing a substance Listed by name in the List of
Dangerous Goods (IATA DGR 4.2) mixed with one or more Substances not
subject to these Regulations Must be identified by the listed proper shipping
Name. The qualifying words âmixtureâ or âSolutionâ must be added, e.g.
Lead cyanide Mixture. The concentration of the mixture or Solution may be
added.
Example: Acetone 75% solution.
The proper shipping name of a mixture for
which the above mentioned exception applies is
the appropriate n.o.s. entry plus the technical
name in parentheses. The words âmixtureâ or
solution must be added, e.g. Toxic solid,
inorganic n.o.s. (Lead cyanide mixture).
Proper shipping Name of a Mixture or
Solution where the Degree of Hazard
Remains Unchanged
64. M. Tayfour 64
Mixtures and Solutions with Single Hazard
Example: The hazardous constituent in a mixture is Acetal. (Check the List of
Dangerous Goods for the packing group.)
Based on tests, the same Packing Group II has been established as for the pure
substance. Since neither hazard class nor the packing group has changed and there is no
significant change in the measures to be taken in emergencies, the proper shipping
name will be:
Acetal solution (UN 1088, Class 3, Packing Group II) or Acetal 80% solution (UN
1088, Class 3, Packing Group II).
Note:
âMixtureâ means a material composed of more than one chemical compound or
element.
âSolutionâ means any homogeneous liquid mixture of two or more chemical
compounds or element that will not undergo any segregation under conditions normal
to transportation.
65. M. Tayfour 65
Mixtures and Solutions with Single Hazard
Proper Shipping Name of a Mixture or Solution where the Degree of Hazard
Differs from that Shown in the List of Dangerous Goods
Example: Acetal is again the hazardous constituent in a mixture. But now, based on
tests, Packing Group III has been established for this mixture. The hazard class remains
the same, but as there is a change in the packing group, the proper shipping name will
be (DGR
4.1.3.1):
Flammable liquid, n.o.s. (Acetal) (UN 1993, Class 3, Packing Group III)
or Flammable liquid, n.o.s. (Acetal solution) (UN1993, Packing Group III)
or Flammable liquid, n.o.s. (containing Acetal) (UN1993, Packing Group III)
Note:
If the Acetal is mixed with such a large solution of a substance which is not subject to
these Regulations, that it no longer meets the criteria of Class 3 Flammable Liquid, or
the criteria of any other class.
It is no longer classified as dangerous goods, and the words âNot Restrictedâ should
be shown on the air waybill. DGR 4.1.3.2.
