3. WHAT IS ENDOSCOPY?
• The word endoscopy is derived from the Greek words "Endo" meaning
"inside" and "skopeein" meaning "to see". It is a word used in medicine to
describe the procedure used see inside various parts of the body.
• Medical endoscopy really came into its own after the invention and
application of fibre-optic technology to endoscopy.

4. 4 LIST OF THE MAJOR TYPES OF ENDOSCOPY
• GASTROSCOPY:To see the gullet, stomach and upper small intestine.
• COLONOSCOPY:To see the large intestine.
• LAPAROSCOPY:To see the "stomach cavity" and the organs therein.
• PROCTOSCOPY:This is used to check for piles and other conditions of the anus and rectum. The
picture on the right illustrates this.
• CYSTOSCOPY:To see the urinary bladder.
• BRONCHOSCOPY:To see the air passages to the lungs.
• LARYNGOSCOPY:To see the larynx or voice box.
• NASOPHARYNGOSCOPY:To see the nose and related cavities.
• ARTHROSCOPY:To see inside joints such as the knee joint.
• THORACOSCOPY:To see inside the chest cavity.
7. MEDICAL USES
• Investigation of symptoms
-nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing and
gastrointestinal bleeding
• Conformation of diagnosis:
-anemia, bleeding, inflammation and cancer of the digestive system
• Giving treatment

8. 1.CAPSULE ENDOSCOPY:
• A revolutionary procedure known as a capsule endoscopy may be used
when other tests aren’t conclusive. During a capsule endoscopy, you
swallow a small pill with a tiny camera inside. The capsule passes through
your digestive tract, without any discomfort to you, and creates thousands
of images of the intestines as it moves through.

12. 3. ENDOSCOPIC ULTRASOUND/FINE-NEDDDEL
ASPIRATION (EUS/NFA)
• EUS uses an ultrasound in conjunction with an endoscopy. This allows
doctors to see organs and other structures that aren’t usually visible
during a regular endoscopy.A thin needle can then be inserted into the
organ or structure to retrieve some tissue for viewing under a
microscope. This procedure is called fine needle aspiration.

16. 5. NARROW BAND IMAGING (NBI)
•NBI uses a special filter to help create more
contrast between vessels and the mucosa. The
mucosa is the inner lining of the digestive tract.

20. 20 PRECAUTION
• Patients with unstable airway or respiratory failure need tracheal
intubation before endoscopy
• Check for hypoxia during the procedure and titrate the
supplemental oxygen to avoid hypoxia
• Patients with massive bleeding with risk of aspiration need
tracheal intubation before endoscopy
• Patients with cardiac instability need proper management before
endoscopy
• Check for arrhythmia during the procedure
