Good afternoon everybody. My name is Erik Hendrix and active within Belgacom with the theme of New Way of Working. In the next 20 minutes I will not talk about our optimal quality mobile network or the status of 4G roll-out in Belgium. Other organisations like ‘Testaankoop’ already created enough press coverage on this. In this presentation I want to shed some light on a very strong trend that we see in the Western world. Companies feel the urge to rethink the way they are operating nowadays. To find ways to boost employee satisfaction and even engagement, with the goal to enhance the overall performance of the company as a whole. And of course, all this within the constraints of smaller budgets and economics turmoil on the markets. Does this sound OK?
Let me first take you back to 1994? Who of you did follow a management course or MBA? You will for sure recognise this model. It’s the Service Profit Chain which in short shows that employee satisfaction directly leads to more satisfied customers. The resulting increase in loyalty will automatically grow the top and bottom line of the company. Several empirical studies of this model, has led to the prove that the model actually work. Which turns this, as we called it, in a perennial best seller. It is here to stay. Now, why is this so important in the actual timeframe? For many companies this model forms the basis, the foundation to go through a necessary digital rethink phase.
The actual employee undergoes many challenges. Some examples:Increasing rising traffic jams : the economic cost is exploding with more employee being stuck in unproductive traffic jams. We will need to work longer: 2012 New Law hits the Belgian population.More demand for creative-, innovation- and service skills, and less making-skills: major shortage of talent in 2018. Education, labor market mobility is coming too late to enable an new generationBut also good news : ICT tools entered its maturity phase. Via the consumerization of technology, the new employees are used to work rendering themselves more productive. All these shifts, more strict demands from customers, more requests for flexibility from employees, financial troubles, etc. forces companies to rethink the way they work, knowing that they will hit the wall of the actual production led systems.
Companies feel the actual way of working will not withstand the future. Employees swarming around a physical place to work, with strict processes and task based procedures, governed by command & control culture. No, companies seek to build people centric organization where employees love to come to perform work and not spend time. And with the flexibility to choose the most optimal place to perform subtasks during the day. Hereby unleashing their full potential, there creativity. This implies 2 things: We need to step away from fixed workplaces and move towards virtual workspace. Who of you work in companies where they use open landscape offices? According a study at Univ Leiden it takes a human being on average 12 min to get ‘into flow’. Can you guess how many people reach the level of flow, when people are constantly disturbed? Concepts of activity based working are the solution, where employees can chose the place where they can perform the task at best. As a society we need to migrate from our dogma of time based contracts, where time spend leads to money paid.
On policy making level, the first steps are being taken to create new rules on working with flexible hours. Monica De Coninck is, as we speak, paving the road towards more flexibility in hours.
Now, more flexibility in hours and places implies more mobility of employees. Employees who off course needs to be equipped with the necessary ICT tools and policies to perform well in the new world of working.
What do companies say about this increase in flexibility and mobility of employees?Datanews recently published the result of a survey of +1000 Belgian companies on this matter. Let’s look at the 5 most important reasons to embark with mobility solutions.Does this ring a bell? It is exactly what Service Profit Chain promised down in 1994. Employees who are satisfied and engaged to their company, have better conversations with their customers, care more about their customers, render a better customer service, are more productive and hereby enhancing the company’s financial performance. That sounds great, but are the necessary tools for doing this available? What are the solutions needed to create mobility, to mitigate a cost/opex explosion and to allow professional and private usage?
As we indicated in the trend slide, we mentioned that technology has become mature.Let me guide you through our offering to enable the mobility of an employee. I will also explain financial optimisation that comes with it when employees use professional tools for private use.Packs for Employee: These packs provide the employee with the necessary connectivity to work mobile, in hotspots and at home. All the necessary connectivity tools are bundled in one commercial pack and is to intended for professional and private use. Mobile for Employee: The corporate tariff plan for mobile voice and data is offered in a split bill method to the employee. Depending on his profile, the companies pays an amount for professional use. The employee pays for the remaining private usage but on cheap corporate tariff. A nice WIN WIN situation, not?Device for Employee: Beginning 2014 we will launch a portal where employees can order the latest company’s smartphone. The delivery is done on a KIALI drop-off point. This is important for companies who consider smartphone logistics not being part of their core business. Employee privilege program: Every employee can obtain additional discounts in the Belgacom shops Now let me ask: Who of you, like me, is spending personal time in optimising his fiscal income statement typical in June timeframe? Almost everybody, not? There is nothing more rewarding than when the government pays thing for you.A Belgian Law was voted in 2002 aimed to boost Internet usage amongst the Belgian population. When a company pays for an employee’s Internet at home, it is considered as a wage that the company is paying. Hence, the cost of this becomes 100% tax deductible as well as the social insurance amount becomes 100 % deductible. The employee only have to pay a benefit in kind of 5€/month. That’s what I call a nice present from our government. I call it internet for free. And still it is strange to see that there are still companies in Belgium with sound cash flows, that haven’t used this opportunity yet.Why should you consider this?
A crucial step in mitigating the risk of exponentially growing costs, is profiling of your employees. Not all employees need the same tools and software licences. First start with defining the tool-set per profile, needed in your organisation. Every employee will have the capabilities that his profile requires. Also at Belgacom we discovered that one size fits all doesn’t mean that the TCO is better. By introducing profiling and targeted supplier negotiations, we ended up with supplying brand new toys for more people at the same TCO. An important driver here is optimisation of software licenses.
Once the profiling is done and the employee knows what his new working environment will be, Belgacom can take the responsibility of the total device life cycle management. From the purchase of the device all the way to the end-of-life of the device, Belgacom can help you. Our Mobile Managed Services will deliver you the value of the white blocks on the top of the slide. With our Mobile Device Management we cover the blue boxes. What about the security of this new mobile world? How can we control the access towards the enterprise?Inventory Managementintegrated, real-time view of all mobile devices deployed,… Remote Device ConfigurationEnables the configuration and update of device & applications over the air,… Policy ManagementImplementation of Profiles & Policies, remotes set up of password,... Application deploymentEnterprise app storeWhite / Black list of applicationSecurityRemote device lock and wipe, GPS location , certificate,... ReportingProvides an extensive library of management reports and logs, multiple access and reporting levels,…
In reality there will be several access methods depending from the physical location of the employee. We have access via the cellular network via our Pack for Employees. Or we could access via the WIFI of the company which we can consider trusted and save. But access can be via untrusted area’s like our FON public WIFI network or via the guest network at a customer premise or the lobby of a hotel, or railstation. Belgacom offers now the possibility to create Context Aware Security enabling the IT department to define a set of rules and policies to mitigate risks in access to the network or applications. A nice added value is when you conbine this with the mobile device management software. Even though a device is accessing in an appropriate way, if the mobile device itself is considered unsecure, who will not be allowed to pass. “You shall not pass!”
This brings us to the conclusion of this short session. As we pointed out throughout this presa, the service profit chain remains valid after all this years. Customer satisfaction and revenue can be influenced easily via the boosting engagement of employees. Companies must embark the journey and look for New ways of Working where a new way of flexibility for employees is created. As we saw, also Policy makers in Belgium are working to evolve towards those flexible time contracts.Technology is mature and secure, they will help you down the road on your journey. I would like to invite you to our booth in the hall, discovering all what’s possible with the Belgacom Mobility Solutions.
