bustles had dropped to knees, leading into the Natural Form period. By this time, a tall, slim figure
was born. Dresses were long and the bodice became long and tight. The Late bustle period brought
the bustle back into style. The skirts stayed long and tight, with a large amount of fabric gathered in
the back. The 1890's saw the disappearance of the bustle for good. At this time, skirts became plain,
and the bodice was dressed up with frills and puffed sleeves. The popular "Pigeon Silhouette" of the
Victorian era was born. The Edwardian Period was a time of ultimate femininity. The skirts became
soft and flowing, and the hobble skirt became popular (What is). This was probably the most
interesting part of my research, because I got a deeper look into the world of fashion.
The Queen's Fashion
I now needed to know what Queen Victoria did for fashion in this time period. I learned through my
next source that Queen Victoria and her daughters were often fashion models for women of this
period. Typical outfits of this time consisted of cotton fabrics, as they were in abundant supply and
allowed air into the often heavy fabrics. Day dresses were worn inside the home, and were

Quinceaneras and the Modern Day Fairytale Marked as a celebration of the transition from
childhood to womanhood, quinceaneras have been a long–standing tradition among Latin American
families. Though "quinceanera" literally means "fifteen year old girl," the term has become more
closely associated with the celebration itself, oftentimes by non–latinx people. Among Latin
American families and culture, the celebration is often referred to as "fiesta de quince años" (fifteen
year party) or simply a "quinces." To avoid any confusion, I use "quinceanera" to refer to the
celebration, rather than the individual, for the remainder of this paper. Historically, fifteen was seen
as the age when Latina girls were ready for marriage, and the quinceanera celebrated that transition.
While modern quinceaneras have drifted away from this initial intent, and now reflect more of a
celebratory coming of age narrative, the marriage and wedding–related symbolism is still apparent.

A majority of wedding dresses purchased in the United States are manufactured outside of the
country. The wedding dress industry relies heavily on the labor of foreign women and girls, often
from China, who work for around $12 a day (Ingraham pp. 70). By extent, this knowledge can be
applied to the quinceanera dress industry. There is a significant labor force present in Latin America
as well, which is somewhat ironic considering the quinceanera dress is a product that will be
marketed to Latin American girls in the United States. The socioeconomic difference between
Latina women in the Latin American labor market versus Latinx families in the US is what allows

Wedding Dress : A Wedding
Ends: While there could be multiple underlying relationship goals of a bridal appointment, the
primary purpose of this event is for the bride to find a gown to wear on her wedding day. The
function of having family members and friends present is to strengthen the bonds among the group
while also providing support for the bride's sometimes difficult decision. One of the entourages in
the store that I was not directly observing all wore pink to the appointment to show their group
identity and support of the bride. The act of finding a wedding dress brings people together and is an

Elizabeth, Laurin, and Ashley talked excitedly as Elizabeth showed them the pictures of potential
dresses that she had printed off of the interne. Sitting nearby, the two mothers talked quietly to one
another until the consultant, Melanie, approached the group and greeted them from afar:
– Melanie: "Hello! (In a raised tone) Elizabeth?"
– Elizabeth: [standing up to shake her hand] (friendly tone) "Hi...that's me."
– Melanie: [releasing her hand and gesturing to the entourage] "It's so good to meet you! Who do
we have with us?"
Elizabeth introduces the group, and then everyone stands and follows Melanie to the designated
area. She returns wearing one of the dresses that looks close to the picture that she had showed her
friends. Her mother's hands cover her mouth and she gasps. Both bridesmaids breathe out in an
"aww" or "ohhh" while clasping their hands together. Elizabeth steps in front of the large mirrors
and slowly turns around.
– Elizabeth: (smiling) "It's just how I'd thought."
– Melanie: (to Elizabeth, but facing the entourage) "We were saying the waist needed to be taken in
about an inch."
– Laurin: "Look at'chew! Perfect!" [standing and moving to see the front]
– Janet: [with hand in front of her mouth] "That's gorgeous."
– Ashley: "You're so perfect."
– Elizabeth: (hesitantly) "This is soo pretty...but I'm not settling quite yet." (to Melanie) "Can we–?"
Melanie helps her down and they return to the fitting room
