Stephen Grover Cleveland Essay
Stephen Grover Cleveland was born the fifth of nine children to a Presbyterian minister on March
18, 1837 in Caldwell, New Jersey. A few years after his birth, the family moved to upstate New York
in 1841, were Cleveland was raised. He was educated at Fayetteville Academy and the Clinton
Liberal Academy, but in 1853, Richard Falley Cleveland, Grover's father, died. This prompted
Cleveland to leave school and begin working to support his large family. Unable to afford a college
education, he worked as a teacher for the blind in New York City, then as a clerk at a law firm and
part–time law student in Buffalo. In 1859, he passed the state bar examination, which allowed him
to open his own law firm, which he did in 1862. He earned a reputation as a hard–working and ...

It began with the worst financial crisis in U.S. history, the Panic of 1893. It contained railroad
bankruptcies, bank failures, a nationwide credit crisis, and a stock market crash. Unemployment
rose to nineteen percent, and strikes crippled the mining and transportation industries. To make
matters worse, currency was being inflated by the coining of more silver. Once again, Cleveland had
to defend the gold standard. Cleveland believed that hardship built character, and refused to assist
any special group, refusing to give $10,000 to drought–striking Texan farmers. This economic
depression would last until the Klondike Gold Rush years later. Another problem he had to deal with
was the Pullman Strike. 150,000 railroad workers went on strike to protest against low wages and
long hours. Because the railroads were very important at the time, this strike crippled transportation
and communication. It ended with federal troops being sent in to over 20 railroad centers, crushing
the revolt and arresting the leaders. He famously proclaimed, "If it takes the entire army and navy of
the United States to deliver a postcard in Chicago, that card will be

Artists that Influenced The Beatles Essay
In the eyes of many, The Beatles are one of the most influential bands of the 20th century. They
have influenced me in my everyday life and so many great musicians in the past 50 years. This fact
alone, makes it hard to imagine that they were once influenced by someone else. While doing some
research, I found various artists that influenced them through the beginning of their careers until the
very end. In the following paragraphs, I will be sharing with you a few of the artists I thought to be
the most influential to The Beatles extremely successful career and why I thought them to be so
influential. In their youth, The Beatles were avid followers of early forms of Rock and Roll. Skiffle
was a popular form of music in post war Britain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"John was fascinated not only with Presley's voice, but also by the jagged guitar work that propelled
'Heartbreak Hotel'" (Hall 1). The Beatles admired him not only for his music, but for his style. They
quickly slicked their hair back, got sideburns, tight jeans called "drainpipes", and crepe–soled shoes,
all in true Elvis style. John was so inspired by Elvis, that it drove him to create his first skiffle group
called The Quarrymen. Another early influence of The Beatles, was one of the most influential
guitar players of early rock and roll, Chuck Berry. Berry was known for cultivation and
development of rhythm and blues music. He is known as one of rock and roll's pioneers. Not only
was Berry's style heard a lot in early Beatles albums, his songs "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Rock
and Roll Music" were later covered by The Beatles. In 1963, The Beatles reached their first number
one hit. Though "Please Please Me" has more of a high energy fast tempo, the song was inspired by
Roy Orbison's 1960 hit "Only the Lonely". It was John Lennon's attempt at writing a Roy Orbison
song. The Beatles were fond of Roy Orbison's song writing and distinct singing approach. "Roy
Orbison had one of the most distinctive and expressive voices, with a three to four octave range to
match, in rock and pop music" (Tranquillo 24). Another influence found in the chart topper was The
Everly Brothers. The opening verse of "Please

The Death Of A Great Deal
Once there was a man, wise, good looking, and overall extraordinarily successful. One might not
consider it when looking upon him, but he had suffered a great deal is his life thus far. Everything
was about to change yet again for him with the appearance of the instruments of his oldest hardship.
His brothers. As can be plainly seen, this is the life of Joseph, and at this point in the narrative his
brothers have just arrived on the scene. Backing up a tad, at the outset of Genesis 42, Jacob is
admonishing his eleven sons to head to Egypt to buy food. They agree and all head to Egypt save
Benjamin, Joseph 's only full blood brother. Benjamin did not make the trip because his father
worried excessively over him. They made it to Egypt and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This is a bit contradicting and shows the lack of Jacob 's faith in the Lord at this time in his life. In
accordance, it is quite mystifying as to the exact necessity of all ten brothers actually making the
journey. Were they afraid they would become lonely or was the food in Egypt metered out according
to persons present? A passage such as this also begs the question, why would did the brother 's first
response to accusation include family details and intimate information? Does this have something to
do with the previous question about quotas of food being dependent upon the number of family
members? Was it really the best way they could think of to show an Egyptian official their
innocence? Also, it is a bit puzzling why they would sort of admit to Joseph 's demise by saying 'he
is no more ' versus, 'a wild beast has devoured him ' as they told their father (Gen. 37:33). Notions
such as these can be more fully understood by looking into a solid Bible based commentary. After
consulting Paradise to Prison, by John J. Davis, concerning Genesis 42:1–15, the text became quite
clearer on the whole. Joseph 's true motive in all of this seems to be to humble his brothers (279). A
sentiment such as this is a bit hard to see in the text, but in hindsight truly acknowledges every facet
of Joseph 's behavioral eccentricities. Joseph, while he has

War, Disobedience And Provision From Judges And Carries...
1 Samuel picks up the theme of war, disobedience and provision from Judges and carries them
forward through God's use of Samuel and Saul. God used them to bring Israel victory over their
oppressors despite Israel's continued disobedience. Through his provision of the judges, victories
and kings, God displayed his omnipotence over the Israelites. Since these themes are carried over
throughout Judges and 1 Samuel, God is shown to be the same God over his people.
From the start of Judges, war is a prevalent theme. This theme is present in the first verse when the
Israelites asked, "Who shall go... against the Canaanites to fight against them?" Time and time again
the Lord raised up judges to deliver Israel from the oppression they faced. Even Gideon was referred
to by God as a "mighty warrior'' in chapter 6. Similar to the judges, Samuel was called by God to
deliver the people. According to the New Oxford Annotated Bible, Samuel is depicted as a
transitional figure leading up to the king the people asked for. Saul was appointed the king despite
God's warning that, "he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands...to make his implements
of war and the equipment of his chariots" in chapter 8. Saul's reign continued the theme of war
present in Judges and 1 Samuel. The Philistines were still a strong force to be reckoned with. The
Israelites were humbled when "defeated by the Philistines." As a result, they went back to their
roots, the Ark of the Covenant. God used the Ark to

Government Contribution To The Industrial Revolution...
Rapid growth of business, industrialization and monopolies, contributed to the Industrial Revolution
in the United States during the Progressive Era. Following a policy of laissez– faire failed to control
big businesses. Although some critics may believe that the government negatively impacted
businesses during the Industrial Revolution, the regulations put onto businesses positively
contributed to economic growth and protected the American Citizens from the big businesses. Prior
to the industrial revolution in America, businesses were small and family owned and did not cause
many problems. At the time the largest enterprises only employed around 50 people
("Corporations"). With only small businesses up to the 1870's the government was able to follow
laissez– faire policies. However, the industrial revolution grew in Europe and quickly made its way
to America. Businesses rapidly began to grow and monopolies formed. The need for railroads and
transportation supported the growth of industries ("Corporations"). The railroads made it easy to
transport manufactured goods across the nation ("Industrial"). Robber barons, John Rockefeller,
Andrew Carnegie, and J.P. Morgan, took advantage of the need for new industries and quickly began
to ruin the country; their monopolies controlled everything. The formation of monopolies and trusts
eliminated competition and drove prices of basic items up (Benson). Consumers began to have only
one expensive option for things they

CONCERT REPORT #2
Beatles Z320
For my second concert report I thought that I would write about my only experience hearing songs
of the Beatles live. The Rib America Festival was hosted by The Beatles Live Repertoire. The group
dressed exactly like the Beatles, even had the same names, John, Paul, George, and Ringo. I had
never heard any Beatles songs live before, so that was enough to get me off my butt. Not to mention,
it was free entertainment, not a bad time at all.
So the show starts, and I'm not sure what to expect. Paul comes out and introduces the band, ( very
good English accent ) and then started out with "I want to hold your hand ". He mentioned that their

Especially the age difference. There were old people, middle aged, teenagers and even little kids.
There was this one woman that stuck out like a sore thumb. She was just going crazy with the
dancing, and was just singing out every lyric to every song. But what was more impressing,
(especially since her dancing wasn't) here kids that couldn't have been any older than 9 or 10, were
also singing every lyric. They were singing songs that I had never even heard.
Anyway, "Can't buy me love", "Help", and " Yesterday" were the next songs played. "Can't buy me
love", "Help", were mediocre, but "Yesterday" was impressive. I have always liked that song, and it
was good to hear it live. Not to mention, the band players were very good with their instruments. "A
ticket to Ride", and "She loves You", were to follow. The festival was being sponsored by 104.5 fm,
and the DJ from 104.5 named Bruce something or other, stepped in and played drums on "She loves
You". He said that he had always wanted to play with the Beatles, and what an honor it was to be
able to do this. And I'm not doubting his enthusiasm, but, I think that the whole thing was rigged.
The next song was the last song before the band took their one and only break of the night. Very
impressive, that this band is putting on a show like they were getting $20/ ticket. They played for
about an hour and a quarter before taking the break.

Analysis Of ' The Beatles '

The Beatles There have been many people, known as artists, who have tried to change the world
through their art. "Art" can be paintings, music, dances, sculptures, literature, or photography. There
are many ways to communicate and express ones feelings but The Beatles did it through their
popular music. Although they didn't focus on changing the world of politics or try to protest through
their music they have songs that focus on those exact two things. In 1966, the English rock band that
consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr (the Fab Four),
released a song called "Taxman" on their album Revolver. George Harrison wrote this song after he
"discovered how much of The Beatles earnings went straight to the Treasury" (Taxman | The Beatles
Bible) and "in anger at finding out what the taxman did" ("Taxman." Wikipedia.). In the song, it
states "let me tell you how it will be, there 's one for you, nineteen for me" (Revolution). George
shared the meaning of that line. He said, "In those days we paid 19 shillings and sixpence [96p] out
of every pound" (Taxman | The Beatles Bible). "Taxman" is remember by The Beatles fans as "the
first song in which John, Paul, George and Ringo have expressed their discontent towards the
governmental measures and have made a political statement" (The Beatles – "Taxman").
Two years after "Taxman", The Beatles released a song that focused on politics,

The Impact Of The Federal Trade Commission
When the news that President McKinley had died reached J. Pierpont Morgan, his response was,
"'This is sad, sad, very sad news. It is very sad news, very sad'" (Gilmore and Sugrue 74). The
powerful financier and banker of the Progressive Era counted on McKinley's campaign manager to
maintain a laissez–faire market in which he could continue his railroad enterprises, namely the
company he co–owned, Northern Securities, which was created to fight off competition and create a
monopoly on nearly half of the nation's transportation system. When Roosevelt assumed McKinley's
office, he investigated Northern Securities under the pretense that they had violated the Sherman
Antitrust Act. Finding them guilty, a suit was filed. The case was taken to ... Show more content on

Monopolies defied the principles of a free market by promoting income inequality and giving
individuals an opportunity to control the price. Roosevelt said concerning them, "[W]here, in either
[unions] or [corporations], there develops corruption or mere brutal indifference to the rights of
others, and short–sighted refusal to look beyond the moment's gain, then the offender, whether union
or corporation, must be fought" (These United States 73). The Sherman and Clayton antitrust acts
were Congress's attempt to fight back. However, the Sherman Act failed to define monopoly and the
Clayton Act was merely a civil statute which carried no criminal penalties.
In response to those weaknesses, the Federal Trade Commission was created and given authority to
enforce the acts' provisions and "protect consumers by preventing anticompetitive, deceptive, and
unfair business practices... and accomplishing this without unduly burdening legitimate business
activity" ("About the FTC"). The Federal Trade Commission's responsibilities included preventing
and dissolving monopolies, bringing civil law suits against violators of the law, and monitoring the
business community for violations of law (Davis). Since its creation, rules such as the Telemarketing
Sales Rule, Pay–Per–Call Rule, and Equal Credit Opportunity Act were placed under the
Commission's jurisdiction, increasing their magnitude. However, in the Constitution Congress is
given power, "[t]o regulate

Examples Of Equality In Harrison Bergeron
The short story "Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut is a story about such an equal society that
people's lives are being ruined. Harrison Bergeron fought the government to free him and his society
of the handicaps that are used to create a perfectly equal world. Also, what is equality? Equality is
not a good quality for a society because, there is no room for change, and no one has the motivation
to continue. The definition of equality is " the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and
opportunities." In Harrison Bergeron, the Government took the equality to an extreme level, by
forcing equality upon the general population. They gave those who were strong, weights to slow
them down, those who are beautiful masks to wear, and the intelligent, headphones that produced
loud noises when they thought. The quote from Benjamin Franklin "Without continual growth and
progress such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning,"is and example
of what would happen to a society if it was perfectly equal. If America lived in a society today, ...

The Downfalls of Egalitarianism and Television
What would actually happen if everyone was forced to be equal? Kurt Vonnegut envisioned the fatal
outcome in his masterpiece, "Harrison Bergeron." The story illustrates "what would happen if a
government or some other power takes this notion serious" (Mowery). The protagonist, Harrison,
who is arrest for "exuberant individuality," escapes from prison and goes on national television
station to declare himself emperor, only later to be killed by the handicap general Diane Moon. In
"Harrison Bergeron," Kurt Vonnegut satirizes the movement toward egalitarianism and the effect of
television on people. Egalitarianism can be absurd and detrimental to American society. In the story,

Literary Critic, Newton Minow, called television "a vast wasteland" of destructive or meaningless
programs. Minow claimed that "instead of challenging people to think, television programming was
making it easier for people to avoid serious thought" (Hist. text). The uses of television desensitize
Harrison's Mother, Hazel. Although, she did shed a tear when she witnesses her son being murder on
television, she said, "I forgot, it was something real sad on television" (10). Hazel becomes so numb
from watching television; she forgot what she was crying about (Alvarez). In addition, one may
determine that Hazel has attention deficit disorder because she is not to focus on anything (Themes
and cons.). According to Karen Wood, "Harrison Bergeron concerns with technological problems
only as these problems express and explicate character– the character of the human race" (Wood). In
summary, the people gave up their individuality for the "good" of society of being equal.
Vonnegut's real point behind "Harrison Bergeron" is a serious attack on the idea of enforced equality
(Mowery). At the end of the story, Vonnegut proposes that no government is capable of suppressing
the individual completely. Rather, the inner strength of human nature at its finest is more powerful
that ill–conceived laws (Mowery). In a criticism, Stanley Schatt describes the death of Harrison as,
"the lost beauty, grace, and wisdom." In summary, Today American society can benefit from

Deciphering Memory : John Adams And Authorship Of The...
In this paper, I wanted to review "Deciphering Memory: John Adams and the Authorship of the
Declaration of Independence" by Robert E. McGlone. Many people knew that Thomas Jefferson
wrote the Declaration of Independence. John Adams was one of the people who supported
Independence and signed his name on the Declaration of Independence. From this article, I
understood that memory could help people to find the truth.
In the article, the author used lots resource and the pictures to explain that John Adams could
remembers all experiences in his life and he had an authority to write a draft of theDeclaration of
Independence.Because the Congress approved Jefferson's idea, no people were curious about the
draft and how many people were involved to plan for the draft.
The author's purpose was arguing that people's memories could explain the facts in their life.
McGlone wanted to let reader knew that memories was a key to solve some mysterious things. In
this essay, he argued that recent advances in cognitive psychology have cracked open a code book
that historians can use, even on memories two hundred years old.
I believe that the author did not challenge for the historical viewpoint. As similar as other article I
had read, McGlone just use lots of sources to support his argument.
First source:"In a letter dated August 22, 1822, to the once–mistrusted Timothy Pickering, Adams
recalled that he and Jefferson had formed a subcommittee to draft a declaration of independence.

How Did Benjamin Harrison Become President
Benjamin Harrison was the 23rd president of the United States of America. He was born on a small
Ohio farm on August 20, 1833, the second of nine children of hard working parents John Harrison
and Elizabeth Ramsey Harrison. In many ways Benjamin Harrison was "born to be President"
because of his heritage. He was named after his great grandfather who was a member of the House
of Burgesses and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was the grandchild of 19th
President of the United States William Henry Harrison, and the descendent of many other significant
political officers and patriots. All of these facts added up to his reputation and led up to his
presidency.

As Benjamin was about to leave for his studies, tragedy struck.
In the summer of august of 1850, just before Benjamin left, his mother Elizabeth gave birth to a son
named James. The birth was hard for Elizabeth and she never recovered. Days before Benjamin was
to leave for school, his mother passed away, and shortly afterwards the baby also died. Although her
death was incredibly depressing for Benjamin he went to college on time and continued his studies.
Benjamin began college in September 1850, and he was known as a "smart, stern, quiet, and
religious student." He followed his father's stern teaching and joined the local Presbyterian Church.
He did not have much of a social life outside of class and did not spend much time with his fellow
classmates. Even though, Benjamin quickly discovered that he had a gift for public speaking. He
impressed his teachers and peers alike with his words and his fluent thinking. He joined the Union
Literary society, a club at his local college, and became its president. Members of the club discussed
various subjects that Benjamin enjoyed, such as politics, literature, world history, American history,
and speech. Benjamin even gave speeches on these subjects to his classmates and his teachers.

(Townsend). As Townsend stated Kurt Vonnegut makes a satire about society in his fictional short
story Harrison Bergeron, which in their society there has been attempt of conformity through the

The handicaps are based on what the individual citizens is better at and what they are not. For
example, George one of the characters in the story, for whom is very intelligent and sharp. Because,
he's so intelligent his handicap has to be a device that has a loud distinct beep that disturbs his train
of thought every twenty minutes. George also has a bag of lead balls that weigh him down. The
irony of the so call handicaps is that the people of this nation like George will get use to their
handicaps. After a while a person will get use to the weight and learn to think faster than twenty

Technology is one of the main means of communication and entertainment. Such entertainment is
television, which was invented by John Baird in 1926. In a Newton Minow speech he states that
"violence as a contributor to this wasteland" he lists what people see on the television and what they
take from it. In the story Harrison 's mother watches her son on the television he get shot to death
and does not even remember what she saw five minutes later. After the commotion was over she
says, "I could tell that one was a doozy"(Vonnegut). That is what television does to a person that is
intellectually impaired.

of the people, the similarity authoritarian government, and the technology. As a result of these

Freemasonry principles and thought had a direct influence on the founders of America. The
principles and thought were partially the basis for the desire of rebellion and independence. There
have been many hints and minor discussions about the influence of Freemasonry and its association
with the revolution and the founding of the United States. While the bulk of research and works do
not specifically call it out, it is an underlying cause. Freemasonic influence is not readily used as a

Conkling followed nothing of this sort. In fact, in more than two decades in Congress, he never

Conkling's actions show the changes made only for personal benefit of this time period because
instead of during what was needed for the nation, he responded with actions that would help out
himself with more votes and by helping out only his friends.
The second of the two senators was a senator named James G. Blaine. Blaine was a Republican

the most popular Republican politician of the era. Charming, intelligent, witty, and able, he served

The Dangers of Total Equality in Harrison Bergeron
Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.'s "Harrison Bergeron" tells the story of an unbelievably talented young man that
defies the constraints of total equality in futuristic America, year 2081. Because of the 211th, 212th,
and 213th amendments, all citizens are subjected to a communist like state where everyone is made
to be equal in beauty, physique, and intelligence. Throughout "Harrison Bergeron," symbols such as
Harrison's defiance of the law, his physical attributes, and the setting presents the theme of the story
as the idea that total equality would be disastrous. Harrison's defiance against the government
symbolizes the rebellious nature of many people everywhere and in every time period. Harrison
breaks out of the prison that he was put into for being so dominant, just to show everyone what he
can become. He exclaims to the audience, ""Even as I stand here" he bellowed, "crippled, hobbled,
sickened – I am a greater ruler than any man who ever lived! Now watch me become what I can
become!"" (Vonnegut 5). His rebelliousness is a product of his human competitive nature.
Throughout all of time, people have always strived to be better than one another, and to be different
as well. The Olympics, Miss Universe, and the Nobel Prize are all examples of rewards people
receive when competing against one another to show exactly who is best. Being able to show one's
talents allows for more individuality to be recognized. Notably, Harrison's physical characteristics

3. Discussion of the Lyrics
The lyrics of song #1 have a poetic feel to them. You've got to hide your love away, can be

understanding the deep meaning of the song it becomes more personal and beautiful. That is where
an abstract and poetic image is made.

Analysis Of George Bergeron 's ' The Novel '
Charlie Kaufman's upcoming adaptation Harrison Bergeron takes a different approach to the original
short story. In the Vonnegut's story the year is 2081 and the world is finally equal or at least

living during this new era. They have a son named Harrison, but he was taken away before the
events of the story. Largely, Vonnegut's story presents itself as a satire to communism; however
Kaufman creates a darker much different perspective. During an early screening of Kaufman's
adaptation the viewer only gets a glimpse of the beginning of the film. Kaufman begins the narrative
using the same first line of the short story, "the year was 2081 and the world was finally equal"
(Vonnegut 7). Yet, there is a noticeable dramatic difference, the narration is told through George's
perspective. The choice is interesting because upon learning this fact the narration becomes bias.
George's narration seems bitter and clearly the system he lives in is not one that he supports. Still,
the perspective is interesting because there is a lot of static during the narrated moments,
presumably from George's handicap. A smart choice as it allows the reader to understand what the
handicap is like through George's eyes. At

Handicap Each to His Ability
Kurt Vonnegut paints a picture of American society 120 years past 1961. Society has made a gradual
change, but it is a drastic one nonetheless. After nearly two hundred amendments to the constitution,
everyone is supposed to be equal in every way. "Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody
was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else." (232
Vonnegut). In this landscape Vonnegut shows that people will never be completely equal, and trying
to force equality through controlling individuals will only create a new class system. In the sixties,
as today, equality was a frequent topic of debate. The Civil Rights movement was rapidly gaining
support, as was equal pay for women, protections of voting ... Show more content on

The cunning part is how the mask naturally will cause unhandicapped people to either fear her or be
repulsed by her. In effect, dehumanizing the one being oppressed. Additionally, they show a ruthless
efficiency in enforcing the handicap laws. When Glampers kills Harrison and his ballerina, it is done
with cameras rolling. The television remains on until after the musicians resume wearing their
handicaps. Her message could not be more clear; the penalty for open defiance is death. Hazel and
the announcer represent the two classes who believe themselves to be benefiting from this quasi–
utopian society. The announcer shows no apparent awareness of the burden forced equality has put
on others. Hazel, however, briefly does when she sees Harrison killed. "Hazel's feelings ought to be
a continued, placid satisfaction that all is well. But deep within her the sympathetic individual
cannot be stifled" (Mowery). Fortunately, for the H–G men she is of average intelligence and
quickly forgets. The average intelligence class is aware, George shows this when he thinks to
himself, "[the ballerinas] weren't very good–no better than anybody else would have been..."
(Vonnegut 232). He knows society has stagnated, but he lacks the will to do anything about it. he
has accept his handicaps, they are just a part of him. Harrison is the opposite, maybe his youth is the
reason, but he cannot withstand the torture of being limited and vilified. He has a natural hunger to

Forced Equality In Kurt Vonnegut's Harrison Bergeron
In 1961 Kurt Vonnegut wrote a short story titled Harrison Bergeron. The story starts out, "The Year
was 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law. They
were equal every which way."(Vonnegut) Forced equality is the major theme in this short story,
taking many features away from the characters including, their independent thought, their
individuality, and their constitutional rights. "Harrison Bergeron" takes place in the future where
everyone is subjected to wearing devices, also known as handicaps, that takes away unequaled,
unsurpassed characteristics of the each person, in order to make every person average and equal to
one another. Two of the main characters George and Hazel Bergeron are the first example of this
ruling that we see in the story. George is described as intelligent and strong and therefore is
subjected to many handicaps where his wife, Hazel Bergeron is considered to be average and
therefore is not subjected to any handicaps. Benjamin Reed describes Hazel as, "so average even her
name is the eye color between brown and blue. Her natural mental state is equivalent to George's
natural mind." (7) Reed later describes their son, Harrison Bergeron as, "[possessing] amazing
strength, god like beauty and stature and (presumably) a piercing intelligence," (8) all of the features
that the United States Handicapper General, Diana Moon Glampers, is trying to make uniform and
equivalent. Diana Moon Glampers has Harrison

Essay On The Populist Movement
Why was the Populist movement so popular in the late 1800s? Before answering this question,
answer this, what is the Populist movement? The populist movement was for a chance of political,
social, and economical equality within American society. Strongly appealing to the farmers and
industrial workers, the populists tried to bring the people back in power, rather than the money that
was controlling civilization. This movement was very popular in the 1800s because it was trying to
gain the rights back of the working class because of the rise in prices of crops and how the West was
over producing food, which caused them to be transport their food more, however, the railroads

This Party would impact the election of 1892 and 1896 in a huge way. There was two parties, the
Democrats who were the south and farmers, and the Republicans who were the north and wealthy
business. A plan was created to protect the farmer from downturns in agricultural prices. Under this
plan farmers could hold crops off the market when prices were low and then receive loans from the
government protected by crops in storage. To gain support from industrial workers, the platform also
created an eight–hour workday, pensions, and the restriction of immigration. This strategic political
goal of the Populist Party was to displace the Democratic Party by making an alliance between
farmers and industrial workers. The Populists, also tried to fix the social conflict between Southern
blacks and whites, arguing that shared economic interests were more important than racial
differences. The next important wave of populist reformism emerged in the 1890s. Various regional
farm groups, known as Farmers' Alliances, took root and grew rapidly. These included the Southern
Alliance and the Agricultural Wheel in the south, and the Northwestern Alliance in northern regions.
The Alliance also captured eight southern legislatures. In the West Alliance candidates dominated
elections in Kansas and Nebraska and secured important power bases in the legislatures of

The Components Of The Sherman Antitrust Act-1890
Peyton Fox 12/3/17 Block B7 Unit 4 legislation Project Sherman Antitrust Act– 1890 The Sherman
Antitrust Act is the oldest of America's Antitrust laws. It was signed into law by President Benjamin
Harrison on July 2, 1890. The purpose of the Sherman Antitrust Act was to preserve free
competition in business and made it a crime to take over any part of trade or commerce. It was
intended to regulate interstate commerce, and to regain a balance in industry allowing equal
opportunities to all businesses. The Sherman Antitrust Act had its supporters and detractors.
Supporters of the Sherman Antitrust Act were the farmers because they had no competition with the
big businesses. They also stated that prohibiting unreasonable restraints on trade would allow them
to expand their business. Those opposed of the Sherman Antitrust Act believed that big companies
should be able to decide what happens in business markets. Business owners also opposed this due
to protect the process of competition. Applying strong incentives for businesses to operate
efficiently, keeping prices down and quality up. Homestead Act 1862 The Homestead Act was
passed on May 20, 1862. It stated anyone over the age of 21 who was the head of a family could
obtain up to 160 acres of public land if they lived on it for five years and make improvements. It
was intended to move more settlers west, to give more free states voice in congress. People decided

Significance Of The Presidential Election Of 1892
A. Plan of Investigation
The investigation aims to evaluate the significance of third party candidates in the US presidential
election of 1892. In 1912, Teddy Roosevelt famously split the vote of the Republican party as a third
party candidate, and the investigation resolves to assess whether a third party candidate changed the
outcome of the election in 1892. The investigation will focus mainly on the influence of one
particular candidate from the Populist Party, James B. Weaver, as he won several electoral votes but
will also include John Bidwell of the Prohibition Party who also drew in votes, although he did not
gain an electoral vote. The candidate from the Socialist Labor Party will be excluded from the
investigation as he did not play a significant role in the election. A focus of the investigation will be
of the political views of those associated with the Populist party and Socialist party as well as why
they chose the a third party ticket over the major party candidates running. Two sources, Populism
and Political Realignment by L. Patrick Hughes and Populist Party Platform (1892) published by the
Omaha Morning Herald, will be evaluated for use in the investigation to demonstrate the purposes,
values, and limitations of the sources in context of the investigation.

Discrimination in Harrison Bergeron, after you my dear...
Discrimination in the Short Stories, Harrison Bergeron, after you my dear Alphonse, and The
Lottery
The trait of discrimination is the basis for the stories, Harrison Bergeron, after you my dear
Alphonse, and Lottery. Discrimination is when someone is hated or acted upon negatively for the
reason of race, sex, or nationality. In the short stories the author's feelings of discrimination are
expressed through the characters differently. In these stories the author has his own feelings and
thought depicted through the characters. By the popular theme of discrimination and racism it
suggests that these stories were written in the late sixties early seventies.
In the story Harrison Bergeron the whole country is handicapped except for ... Show more content

This shows discrimination against everyone because they are taking that person's freedom away and
judging them on their looks and abilities. A man named Harrison who would be a sport super star in
real life because of his outstanding talent is fitted with weights and other handicaps to make him like
everyone else. He revolts and overcomes his handicaps but is soon killed for breaking the law. In
this story discrimination plays a big part in how the main character revolts.
The next example is in the story, after you my dear alphonse. In this story a boy becomes friends
with an African American boy named Boyd and brings him home for lunch, when he gets home his
mother is shocked to see her son with this boy. The mother assumes that the father works hard labor
in the fields and that the boy will grow up and do the same. But that?s not the case, the boys father
works in a factory. This is an example of discrimination because the mother assumes things just
because he is black.
The last example of discrimination as a theme for a short story is in The Lottery. In this story a
community has a lottery every year and the winner is stoned to death. The theme of discrimination is
shown when they just pick a random person and kill them. That discriminates against that person
because they show hate for little or no reason.

Saving The Israelites Research Paper
Saving the Israelites
In the Book of Genesis, Joseph is utilized by God to save the Israelites which started due Joseph's
boasting habits. His story begins with his ten brothers and himself working for his father. Joseph had
tendencies to share his dreams in which he was presented as higher than his brothers. As a result,
Joseph's angry brothers planned to kill him, but ends up in slavery due to his brother Rueben trying
to save him. Therefore, God uses Joseph's hardships to allow the Israelites to end up in Egypt.
Shortly after presenting Jacob and his family's background, the Book of Genesis shares a few of

of Potiphar's property. Unfortunately, Potiphar's wife false rape accusation resulted in Potiphar's
officials imprisoning innocent Joseph. Although even during imprisonment, Joseph remains hopeful
in God to save him and attempts to tell the cupbearer to help him get released after he interperts his
dream. Fortunately, Potiphar has a dream that no one can interpret but Joseph, after the cupbearer
remembers him. Joseph explains to Pharaoh the famine that God proclaims will happen in seven
years. Again, God gives Joseph the ability to portray great leadership skills when Potiphar promotes
him to second in command. So, both men prepare for the famine and sell goods to people all over.
During the famine, Jacob sends Joseph's ten older brothers to Egypt to buy grain. Joseph reunites
with his brothers, though hostile, allows them to bring Israelites to Egypt. Although Joseph was
confrontational towards his brothers, it was more of a lesson rather than a revenge plot. To
demonstrate, Joseph states," But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth

Civil War, McKinley began writing papers. He was able to have one of his papers published that
stressed how important the Union's cause was. This letter was published. Later he met his lifelong
friend, Major Rutherford Hayes, who would motivate and influence him throughout his life. After
the war McKinley served in an attorney's office in Ohio. The year after this, he applied to and was
accepted to Albany Law School. After a year of studies he moved to Canton where established a

was here that William McKinley began giving political speeches. He spoke on the behalf of Hayes,
thus showing his first true step in the world of politics. Soon after, he became a prosecuting attorney
in Stark County, Ohio. This was an outstanding accomplishment because the prosecuting attorney
was almost always a Democrat. Finally, McKinley decided to campaign for his spot in Congress. All

The Square Deal: Social Reform to Avoid Disaster Essay
The Square Deal: Social Reform to Avoid Disaster      America at
the turn of the century was a very different place than it is today. The industrial revolution had set
into motion a series of events that empowered and enriched some and nearly enslaved others.
Theodore Roosevelt's "Square Deal" was a necessary response to growing social unrest. A severely
unequal distribution of wealth along with poor living and working conditions were leading workers
and capitalists to increasingly extreme means. By enacting a large body of legislation intended to set
right the wrongs in society and using whatever force necessary, Roosevelt avoided what could have

32). Though these industries were feeding unprecedented economic growth, only the privileged
were seeing the benefit. Common people were living and working in abhorrent conditions and
discontent began almost immediately. Overcrowding and political corruption were also serious
issues.      The press was all too quick to point out social problems
and served to bring many issues into public consciousness. Known as "muckrackers", journalists
like Lincoln Steffens and Upton Sinclair pointed out dirty politics, unsanitary handling of food food,
and dangerous working conditions. Political cartoons, too, were immensely popular and often
satirized common social problems.      "By 1900, the
transformation of the American economy from agricultural to industrial was in full swing, as the
nation of farmers and artisans was giving way tot hat of factory workers and manufacturing giants"
(Wattenberg, 1998, p. 32). Coinciding with this transformation, an atmosphere conducive to
entrepreneurship allowed single families to dominate individual industries, giving rise to the so–
called "trusts". As icons in American business, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and
Cornelius Vanderbilt were perceived as the enemy of the working class. Bertrand Russell, a well

soulless corporations. . ." (Thayer). This led into the 1920's a prosperous decade in which people
received "new money." Theodore Roosevelt stressed more for people to be responsible than to be

"Bigness not badness was the sin" (Miller). The biggest step that Roosevelt did using the Sherman
Act was stopping the Northern Securities Company from having a monopoly on the railroad
industry in the North. The Great Northern railroad company wanted to merge with the Northern
Pacific railroad company. Even though this was a part of the railroad industry Roosevelt did not like
where the merge might lead in the future, because he wanted to insure that other corporations could
compete. He also broke up the Standard Oil Trust and the Tobacco Trust. He felt that they were
getting too large and smaller companies had no where to go. In seven and a half years Theodore
Roosevelt had 44 prosecutions using the Sherman Act (Howland). After using the Sherman Act,
Roosevelt started using new legislature to conquer the Trusts and make labor conditions more
tolerable. The first department that he made to conquer Trusts was the Federal Department of
Commerce and Labor. The Commerce Department could not break down the Trusts, but they could
make working conditions better for all workers, and also set rates so the corporations could not over
charge. The Commerce department set a maximum rate for the railroad companies in which they
could charge companies. This way, the companies tnies could not survive and compete. Also, the

Harrison Bergeron, by Kurt Vonnegut Essay

The story shows the reader how the equality issue can have negative impacts on people's

an archetypical symbol that represents defiance, and individuality. He is used to represent the people

Bergeron is a valuable story that has underlying themes, which are very relevant in our current
society. The theme of equality can be seen throughout the book, and it is the principle that is
enshrined in America's constitution now, whereby they claim that all men are equal. Kurt Vonnegut
demonstrates the issue of equality in a Utopian society. Vonnegut in his story, cautions Americans on
the dangers of creating a truly equalitarian society, whereby citizens go to an extent of sacrificing
their freedom, and individuality to the state, to create a place where all people are equal. Vonnegut
creates a society whereby, all people are made equal. The beautiful are forced to wear hideous
masks to disfigure their beauty, those considered intelligent are to wear radio calls, and ear splitting
noises that are supposed to impede their thinking, and the strong are forced to wear weights around
their necks throughout the day. The author uses masks, and the weights as symbols to symbolize

Business, Industrialization And Monopolies During The...
Rapid growth of business, industrialization, and monopolies, contributed to the Industrial
Revolution in the United States during the Progressive Era. Following a policy of laissez– faire
failed to control big businesses. Although some critics may believe that the government negatively
impacted businesses during the Industrial Revolution, the regulations put onto businesses positively
contributed to economic growth and protected the American citizens from the big businesses. Prior
to the industrial revolution in America, businesses were small, family owned, and generally did not
cause many problems. At the time, the largest enterprises only employed around 50 people
("Corporations"). With only small businesses up to the 1870's, the government was able to follow
laissez–faire policies.

Analysis Of Kurt Vonnegut 's ' Harrison Bergeron '
POSSIBLE THESIS STATEMENTS
#1 Can we live in Kurt Vonnegut's story of "Harrison Bergeron" which is a Utopian society where
everyone is equal mentally, socially, and physically? Would we need to interact or come together
with others in society? #2 "Harrison Bergeron", a short story written by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Vonnegut
makes it well–known to his readers how dangerous it can be to have total equality. Throughout the
story, the author uses comedy, sarcasm, and tone. #3 In Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s short story, "Harrison
Bergeron", the author argues the dangers of a world that is based on total equality. Not only does
Vonnegut expose the negative results of being alike, he also shows that we desire to be different
from each other.
In the year 2081, all people are created or forced to be equal mentally, socially, and physically. You
are "NOT" allowed to be different, whether it is better or worse, than anyone else. If you are
intelligent, you must wear a handicapping radio in your ears at all times. This radio blasts a sharp
noise, every 20 seconds or so, so you would not use your brain. If you are good looking, you must
wear masks, and if you are strong and athletic, you are weighed down with heavy weights. This
contradicts everything that we believe in about our society today. This is also what Harrison
Bergeron hated about his society. George and Hazel Bergeron are husband and wife and the parents
of Harrison Bergeron. Harrison was jailed at the age of 14 due to

Stephen Grover Cleveland Essay

  • 1. Stephen Grover Cleveland Essay Stephen Grover Cleveland was born the fifth of nine children to a Presbyterian minister on March 18, 1837 in Caldwell, New Jersey. A few years after his birth, the family moved to upstate New York in 1841, were Cleveland was raised. He was educated at Fayetteville Academy and the Clinton Liberal Academy, but in 1853, Richard Falley Cleveland, Grover's father, died. This prompted Cleveland to leave school and begin working to support his large family. Unable to afford a college education, he worked as a teacher for the blind in New York City, then as a clerk at a law firm and part–time law student in Buffalo. In 1859, he passed the state bar examination, which allowed him to open his own law firm, which he did in 1862. He earned a reputation as a hard–working and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It began with the worst financial crisis in U.S. history, the Panic of 1893. It contained railroad bankruptcies, bank failures, a nationwide credit crisis, and a stock market crash. Unemployment rose to nineteen percent, and strikes crippled the mining and transportation industries. To make matters worse, currency was being inflated by the coining of more silver. Once again, Cleveland had to defend the gold standard. Cleveland believed that hardship built character, and refused to assist any special group, refusing to give $10,000 to drought–striking Texan farmers. This economic depression would last until the Klondike Gold Rush years later. Another problem he had to deal with was the Pullman Strike. 150,000 railroad workers went on strike to protest against low wages and long hours. Because the railroads were very important at the time, this strike crippled transportation and communication. It ended with federal troops being sent in to over 20 railroad centers, crushing the revolt and arresting the leaders. He famously proclaimed, "If it takes the entire army and navy of the United States to deliver a postcard in Chicago, that card will be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Artists that Influenced The Beatles Essay In the eyes of many, The Beatles are one of the most influential bands of the 20th century. They have influenced me in my everyday life and so many great musicians in the past 50 years. This fact alone, makes it hard to imagine that they were once influenced by someone else. While doing some research, I found various artists that influenced them through the beginning of their careers until the very end. In the following paragraphs, I will be sharing with you a few of the artists I thought to be the most influential to The Beatles extremely successful career and why I thought them to be so influential. In their youth, The Beatles were avid followers of early forms of Rock and Roll. Skiffle was a popular form of music in post war Britain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "John was fascinated not only with Presley's voice, but also by the jagged guitar work that propelled 'Heartbreak Hotel'" (Hall 1). The Beatles admired him not only for his music, but for his style. They quickly slicked their hair back, got sideburns, tight jeans called "drainpipes", and crepe–soled shoes, all in true Elvis style. John was so inspired by Elvis, that it drove him to create his first skiffle group called The Quarrymen. Another early influence of The Beatles, was one of the most influential guitar players of early rock and roll, Chuck Berry. Berry was known for cultivation and development of rhythm and blues music. He is known as one of rock and roll's pioneers. Not only was Berry's style heard a lot in early Beatles albums, his songs "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Rock and Roll Music" were later covered by The Beatles. In 1963, The Beatles reached their first number one hit. Though "Please Please Me" has more of a high energy fast tempo, the song was inspired by Roy Orbison's 1960 hit "Only the Lonely". It was John Lennon's attempt at writing a Roy Orbison song. The Beatles were fond of Roy Orbison's song writing and distinct singing approach. "Roy Orbison had one of the most distinctive and expressive voices, with a three to four octave range to match, in rock and pop music" (Tranquillo 24). Another influence found in the chart topper was The Everly Brothers. The opening verse of "Please ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Death Of A Great Deal Once there was a man, wise, good looking, and overall extraordinarily successful. One might not consider it when looking upon him, but he had suffered a great deal is his life thus far. Everything was about to change yet again for him with the appearance of the instruments of his oldest hardship. His brothers. As can be plainly seen, this is the life of Joseph, and at this point in the narrative his brothers have just arrived on the scene. Backing up a tad, at the outset of Genesis 42, Jacob is admonishing his eleven sons to head to Egypt to buy food. They agree and all head to Egypt save Benjamin, Joseph 's only full blood brother. Benjamin did not make the trip because his father worried excessively over him. They made it to Egypt and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is a bit contradicting and shows the lack of Jacob 's faith in the Lord at this time in his life. In accordance, it is quite mystifying as to the exact necessity of all ten brothers actually making the journey. Were they afraid they would become lonely or was the food in Egypt metered out according to persons present? A passage such as this also begs the question, why would did the brother 's first response to accusation include family details and intimate information? Does this have something to do with the previous question about quotas of food being dependent upon the number of family members? Was it really the best way they could think of to show an Egyptian official their innocence? Also, it is a bit puzzling why they would sort of admit to Joseph 's demise by saying 'he is no more ' versus, 'a wild beast has devoured him ' as they told their father (Gen. 37:33). Notions such as these can be more fully understood by looking into a solid Bible based commentary. After consulting Paradise to Prison, by John J. Davis, concerning Genesis 42:1–15, the text became quite clearer on the whole. Joseph 's true motive in all of this seems to be to humble his brothers (279). A sentiment such as this is a bit hard to see in the text, but in hindsight truly acknowledges every facet of Joseph 's behavioral eccentricities. Joseph, while he has ... • 7. War, Disobedience And Provision From Judges And Carries... 1 Samuel picks up the theme of war, disobedience and provision from Judges and carries them forward through God's use of Samuel and Saul. God used them to bring Israel victory over their oppressors despite Israel's continued disobedience. Through his provision of the judges, victories and kings, God displayed his omnipotence over the Israelites. Since these themes are carried over throughout Judges and 1 Samuel, God is shown to be the same God over his people. From the start of Judges, war is a prevalent theme. This theme is present in the first verse when the Israelites asked, "Who shall go... against the Canaanites to fight against them?" Time and time again the Lord raised up judges to deliver Israel from the oppression they faced. Even Gideon was referred to by God as a "mighty warrior'' in chapter 6. Similar to the judges, Samuel was called by God to deliver the people. According to the New Oxford Annotated Bible, Samuel is depicted as a transitional figure leading up to the king the people asked for. Saul was appointed the king despite God's warning that, "he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands...to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots" in chapter 8. Saul's reign continued the theme of war present in Judges and 1 Samuel. The Philistines were still a strong force to be reckoned with. The Israelites were humbled when "defeated by the Philistines." As a result, they went back to their roots, the Ark of the Covenant. God used the Ark to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Essay on Concert CONCERT REPORT #2 Beatles Z320 For my second concert report I thought that I would write about my only experience hearing songs of the Beatles live. The Rib America Festival was hosted by The Beatles Live Repertoire. The group dressed exactly like the Beatles, even had the same names, John, Paul, George, and Ringo. I had never heard any Beatles songs live before, so that was enough to get me off my butt. Not to mention, it was free entertainment, not a bad time at all. So the show starts, and I'm not sure what to expect. Paul comes out and introduces the band, ( very good English accent ) and then started out with "I want to hold your hand ". There was this one woman that stuck out like a sore thumb. She was just going crazy with the dancing, and was just singing out every lyric to every song. But what was more impressing, (especially since her dancing wasn't) here kids that couldn't have been any older than 9 or 10, were also singing every lyric. They were singing songs that I had never even heard. Anyway, "Can't buy me love", "Help", and " Yesterday" were the next songs played. "Can't buy me love", "Help", were mediocre, but "Yesterday" was impressive. I have always liked that song, and it was good to hear it live. Not to mention, the band players were very good with their instruments. "A ticket to Ride", and "She loves You", were to follow. The festival was being sponsored by 104.5 fm, and the DJ from 104.5 named Bruce something or other, stepped in and played drums on "She loves You". He said that he had always wanted to play with the Beatles, and what an honor it was to be able to do this. And I'm not doubting his enthusiasm, but, I think that the whole thing was rigged. The next song was the last song before the band took their one and only break of the night. Very impressive, that this band is putting on a show like they were getting $20/ ticket. • 13. Analysis Of ' The Beatles ' Kim Walker Boatwright Honors English 10, 1A 24, March 2015 The Beatles There have been many people, known as artists, who have tried to change the world through their art. "Art" can be paintings, music, dances, sculptures, literature, or photography. There are many ways to communicate and express ones feelings but The Beatles did it through their popular music. Although they didn't focus on changing the world of politics or try to protest through their music they have songs that focus on those exact two things. In 1966, the English rock band that consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr (the Fab Four), released a song called "Taxman" on their album Revolver. George Harrison wrote this song after he "discovered how much of The Beatles earnings went straight to the Treasury" (Taxman | The Beatles Bible) and "in anger at finding out what the taxman did" ("Taxman." Wikipedia.). In the song, it states "let me tell you how it will be, there 's one for you, nineteen for me" (Revolution). George shared the meaning of that line. He said, "In those days we paid 19 shillings and sixpence [96p] out of every pound" (Taxman | The Beatles Bible). "Taxman" is remember by The Beatles fans as "the first song in which John, Paul, George and Ringo have expressed their discontent towards the governmental measures and have made a political statement" (The Beatles – "Taxman"). • 15. The Impact Of The Federal Trade Commission When the news that President McKinley had died reached J. Pierpont Morgan, his response was, "'This is sad, sad, very sad news. The powerful financier and banker of the Progressive Era counted on McKinley's campaign manager to maintain a laissez–faire market in which he could continue his railroad enterprises, namely the company he co–owned, Northern Securities, which was created to fight off competition and create a monopoly on nearly half of the nation's transportation system. Roosevelt said concerning them, "[W]here, in either [unions] or [corporations], there develops corruption or mere brutal indifference to the rights of others, and short–sighted refusal to look beyond the moment's gain, then the offender, whether union or corporation, must be fought" (These United States 73). The Sherman and Clayton antitrust acts were Congress's attempt to fight back. However, the Sherman Act failed to define monopoly and the Clayton Act was merely a civil statute which carried no criminal penalties. In response to those weaknesses, the Federal Trade Commission was created and given authority to enforce the acts' provisions and "protect consumers by preventing anticompetitive, deceptive, and unfair business practices... and accomplishing this without unduly burdening legitimate business activity" ("About the FTC"). The Federal Trade Commission's responsibilities included preventing and dissolving monopolies, bringing civil law suits against violators of the law, and monitoring the business community for violations of law (Davis). • 17. Examples Of Equality In Harrison Bergeron The short story "Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut is a story about such an equal society that people's lives are being ruined. Harrison Bergeron fought the government to free him and his society of the handicaps that are used to create a perfectly equal world. Also, what is equality? Equality is not a good quality for a society because, there is no room for change, and no one has the motivation to continue. The definition of equality is " the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities." In Harrison Bergeron, the Government took the equality to an extreme level, by forcing equality upon the general population. They gave those who were strong, weights to slow them down, those who are beautiful masks to wear, and the intelligent, headphones that produced loud noises when they thought. The quote from Benjamin Franklin "Without continual growth and progress such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning,"is and example of what would happen to a society if it was perfectly equal. Kurt Vonnegut envisioned the fatal outcome in his masterpiece, "Harrison Bergeron." The story illustrates "what would happen if a government or some other power takes this notion serious" (Mowery). The protagonist, Harrison, who is arrest for "exuberant individuality," escapes from prison and goes on national television station to declare himself emperor, only later to be killed by the handicap general Diane Moon. Literary Critic, Newton Minow, called television "a vast wasteland" of destructive or meaningless programs. Minow claimed that "instead of challenging people to think, television programming was making it easier for people to avoid serious thought" (Hist. text). The uses of television desensitize Harrison's Mother, Hazel. Although, she did shed a tear when she witnesses her son being murder on television, she said, "I forgot, it was something real sad on television" (10). Hazel becomes so numb from watching television; she forgot what she was crying about (Alvarez). In addition, one may determine that Hazel has attention deficit disorder because she is not to focus on anything (Themes and cons.). According to Karen Wood, "Harrison Bergeron concerns with technological problems only as these problems express and explicate character– the character of the human race" (Wood). In summary, the people gave up their individuality for the "good" of society of being equal. Vonnegut's real point behind "Harrison Bergeron" is a serious attack on the idea of enforced equality (Mowery). At the end of the story, Vonnegut proposes that no government is capable of suppressing the individual completely. Rather, the inner strength of human nature at its finest is more powerful that ill–conceived laws (Mowery). John Adams was one of the people who supported Independence and signed his name on the Declaration of Independence. From this article, I understood that memory could help people to find the truth. The author's purpose was arguing that people's memories could explain the facts in their life. McGlone wanted to let reader knew that memories was a key to solve some mysterious things. In this essay, he argued that recent advances in cognitive psychology have cracked open a code book that historians can use, even on memories two hundred years old. I believe that the author did not challenge for the historical viewpoint. As similar as other article I had read, McGlone just use lots of sources to support his argument. • 31. The Dangers of Total Equality in Harrison Bergeron Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.'s "Harrison Bergeron" tells the story of an unbelievably talented young man that defies the constraints of total equality in futuristic America, year 2081. Because of the 211th, 212th, and 213th amendments, all citizens are subjected to a communist like state where everyone is made to be equal in beauty, physique, and intelligence. Throughout "Harrison Bergeron," symbols such as Harrison's defiance of the law, his physical attributes, and the setting presents the theme of the story as the idea that total equality would be disastrous. Harrison's defiance against the government symbolizes the rebellious nature of many people everywhere and in every time period. Harrison breaks out of the prison that he was put into for being so dominant, just to show everyone what he can become. He exclaims to the audience, ""Even as I stand here" he bellowed, "crippled, hobbled, sickened – I am a greater ruler than any man who ever lived! Now watch me become what I can become!"" (Vonnegut 5). His rebelliousness is a product of his human competitive nature. Throughout all of time, people have always strived to be better than one another, and to be different as well. The Olympics, Miss Universe, and the Nobel Prize are all examples of rewards people receive when competing against one another to show exactly who is best. • 35. Analysis Of George Bergeron 's ' The Novel ' Charlie Kaufman's upcoming adaptation Harrison Bergeron takes a different approach to the original short story. In the Vonnegut's story the year is 2081 and the world is finally equal or at least considered to be that way. Everyone wears handicaps to suppress whatever can give them an advantage, such as headpieces that stop a person from using their brain, weights to diminish strength, and masks to hide beauty. The short story looks at the lives of Hazel and George Bergeron living during this new era. They have a son named Harrison, but he was taken away before the events of the story. Largely, Vonnegut's story presents itself as a satire to communism; however Kaufman creates a darker much different perspective. During an early screening of Kaufman's adaptation the viewer only gets a glimpse of the beginning of the film. Kaufman begins the narrative using the same first line of the short story, "the year was 2081 and the world was finally equal" (Vonnegut 7). Yet, there is a noticeable dramatic difference, the narration is told through George's perspective. The choice is interesting because upon learning this fact the narration becomes bias. George's narration seems bitter and clearly the system he lives in is not one that he supports. Still, the perspective is interesting because there is a lot of static during the narrated moments, presumably from George's handicap. The story starts out, "The Year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way."(Vonnegut) Forced equality is the major theme in this short story, taking many features away from the characters including, their independent thought, their individuality, and their constitutional rights. "Harrison Bergeron" takes place in the future where everyone is subjected to wearing devices, also known as handicaps, that takes away unequaled, unsurpassed characteristics of the each person, in order to make every person average and equal to one another. Two of the main characters George and Hazel Bergeron are the first example of this ruling that we see in the story. George is described as intelligent and strong and therefore is subjected to many handicaps where his wife, Hazel Bergeron is considered to be average and therefore is not subjected to any handicaps. Benjamin Reed describes Hazel as, "so average even her name is the eye color between brown and blue. Her natural mental state is equivalent to George's natural mind." The Great Northern railroad company wanted to merge with the Northern Pacific railroad company. Even though this was a part of the railroad industry Roosevelt did not like where the merge might lead in the future, because he wanted to insure that other corporations could compete. He also broke up the Standard Oil Trust and the Tobacco Trust. He felt that they were getting too large and smaller companies had no where to go. In seven and a half years Theodore Roosevelt had 44 prosecutions using the Sherman Act (Howland). After using the Sherman Act, Roosevelt started using new legislature to conquer the Trusts and make labor conditions more tolerable. The first department that he made to conquer Trusts was the Federal Department of Commerce and Labor. The Commerce Department could not break down the Trusts, but they could make working conditions better for all workers, and also set rates so the corporations could not over charge. Rapid growth of business, industrialization, and monopolies, contributed to the Industrial Revolution in the United States during the Progressive Era. Following a policy of laissez– faire failed to control big businesses. Although some critics may believe that the government negatively impacted businesses during the Industrial Revolution, the regulations put onto businesses positively contributed to economic growth and protected the American citizens from the big businesses. Prior to the industrial revolution in America, businesses were small, family owned, and generally did not cause many problems. At the time, the largest enterprises only employed around 50 people ("Corporations"). With only small businesses up to the 1870's, the government was able to follow laissez–faire policies. However, the Industrial Revolution grew in Europe and quickly made its way to America. Businesses rapidly began to grow and monopolies formed. The need for railroads and transportation supported the growth of industries ("Corporations"). The railroads made it easy to transport manufactured goods across the nation ("Industrial"). Analysis Of Kurt Vonnegut 's ' Harrison Bergeron ' POSSIBLE THESIS STATEMENTS #1 Can we live in Kurt Vonnegut's story of "Harrison Bergeron" which is a Utopian society where everyone is equal mentally, socially, and physically? Would we need to interact or come together with others in society? #2 "Harrison Bergeron", a short story written by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Vonnegut makes it well–known to his readers how dangerous it can be to have total equality. Throughout the story, the author uses comedy, sarcasm, and tone. #3 In Kurt Vonnegut Jr.'s short story, "Harrison Bergeron", the author argues the dangers of a world that is based on total equality. Not only does Vonnegut expose the negative results of being alike, he also shows that we desire to be different from each other. In the year 2081, all people are created or forced to be equal mentally, socially, and physically. You are "NOT" allowed to be different, whether it is better or worse, than anyone else. If you are intelligent, you must wear a handicapping radio in your ears at all times. This radio blasts a sharp noise, every 20 seconds or so, so you would not use your brain. If you are good looking, you must wear masks, and if you are strong and athletic, you are weighed down with heavy weights. This contradicts everything that we believe in about our society today. This is also what Harrison Bergeron hated about his society. George and Hazel Bergeron are husband and wife and the parents of Harrison Bergeron. Harrison was jailed at the age of 14 due to ...
