assimilate the entire process and appreciate why it is rated as one of the most difficult change
brought in the history of any industry in the country.
WINDS OF CHANGE–THE INESCAPABLE ROUTE
The Necessity
6. The Indian trade, industry and economy had been stagnating in the years preceding 1991 due to
Govt regulating the industry, and state protection policies of licensing, high tariffs and administered
prices. These protectionist policies made our industries complacent and curtailed the competitive
spirit of the firms, making them inefficient in the intensely competitive global market. The state of
Indian economy was in such doldrums that there was a necessity for the Indian Govt to implement
drastic fiscal policies and a controlled deregulation.
7. The Economic Turnaround of 1991. The state of the Indian economy made the govt realise that
they could no more remain isolated from the world economy, and therefore, brought in economic
liberalisation and free economy. Deregulation, free flow of goods within and outside the country and
encouragement of foreign technology became the order of the day. The new policies brought in a
fierce competition, which epitomised the age old dictum of 'survival of the fittest'. Many firms were
forced to close shop because of obsolescence of their product or technology and lack of skills to

Internal Weakness Of Tata Steel
Internal Analysis of Tata Steel Strengths of Tata Steel
Abundant Resources of iron ore: Tata Steel has abundant resources of iron ore in India and across
the world too in various other countries. They have mines at four locations in India at Noamundi,
Joda , Khondbond, Katamati. All these mines are located in Jharkhand and Odisha.
Noamundi is a world class open cast ore mine equipped with latest technology.
Apart from these Tata Steel has iron ore projects in Canada, Mozambique, South Africa and Ivory
Coast.
Low cost production and cheap labour: Tata Steel has done downward integration and is thus able to
produce steel at low cost due to easy availability of iron ore for its steel plants. Tata Steel also pays
attention to the operational costs.

In turn electricity production is also dependent on coal. So, coal is the most widely used source of
energy in India for heavy industries. In the scenario of electricity or coal costs rising Tata Steel
would face.
Dependence on manufacture of steel making machinery from abroad : India lags behind on facilities
for producing machinery for steel production to be installed in steel plants. All the steel producing
firms including Tata Steel have to import almost all the machinery and equipment to be installed in
the plants from other countries. This tends to push up the set up costs to be investing while setting
up the plants. China on the other hand has a hub of such capital industries which gives them cost
advantage.
Opportunities for Tata Steel

Economic Issues For Tata Steel
Economic Issues concerning Tata Steel
Tata Steel: A Global Entity
Tata Steel is a truly global company with a well established presence not only in India but around
the world in large economies as well as emerging economies.. In the year 2013, it was the 11th
largest steel producing company in the world and the second largest steel company in India
(measured by domestic production) after the State run entity– Steel Authority of India Limited.
The 4 core economic issues that Tata Steel must factor in its decision making:
1) Understand the Global Market and operate within the rules.
2) Expansion plans must be carefully carried out.
3) Acquisitions and other partnerships must be carefully carried out.
4) Keep the finances and other key financials in check.
Tata Steel primarily serves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has to be changing with time and evolve constantly with respect to technology, best practices,
working conditions etc.
Tata Steel's major competitors include ArcelorMittal, Essar Steel, Jindal Steel and Power, JSW
Steel, SAIL and VISA Steel.
Other economic issues include falling International Iron Ore prices and Job Cuts in the Steel
Industry which can affect morale:
Steelmakers in India and worldwide, including Tata Steel, have cut prices to remain competitive in
the face of cheap imports from China and Russia. Global steel prices have fallen in tandem with
falling iron ore prices internationally. Some of its competitors have seen losses to their financial
numbers because of this. Tata must factor in all the international and global conditions.
Tata Steel mothballed some plants and cut 2000 jobs in Europe recently to combat widening losses
in a market which haven't yet recovered from downturn in the steel industry last decade. The
company tried to sell its loss–making long products business to Klesch but the deal fell through with
no signs on uptick in demand in the region.

Companies are returning to improve efficiencies, streamline processes, make intelligent choices,
ensure profitability and strengthen the corporate fibre in order to be more competitive. Change is
crucial. But the Jamshedpur–based Tata Motors' commercial vehicles division (CVD) has
discovered that managing people to manage change is even more important. Its department for
productivity services has been the change agent to achieve the dual task of employee involvement
and waste elimination. Says AK Dua, deputy general manager, productivity services, Tata Motors,
"We have tried to be innovative in each of our initiatives." For instance, the first thing that the team
addressed was the need to create champions and opinion leaders from various divisions within
CVD. Under the Total Productivity Model, the division started using a system under which an
individual would be the owner of a machine. It would be this person's responsibility to improve its
performance and to keep it clean. "When you deal with people, you deal with emotions. We found
that there was a lot of resistance and even hostility towards this model. Someone pulled out a peg
from a machine to spite the attempt. So four senior managers took up the ownership of one machine
each to set a precedent. They would clean up the machine themselves. Soon, we have others asking
if they can do this too," says Mr Dua. Even in the area of

Tata Group : A Global Leader Player
The late Jamsetiji Tata who holds nearly 100 companies with 300 subsidiaries in 40 businesses

segments specifically: engineering, materials, communications and information technology,
services, energy, consumer products and chemicals. Each company and subsidiaries functions

Critical factors like overseeing the operations in international locations and with variations in the
local regulations. Tata will faces problem in understanding the country's background and the
working nature of the country. (Luthan and Doh, 2009)
Ratan Tata strongly emphasize on corporate social responsibility, he exhausted substantial sum of
money to grow Jamshedpur, the home based of Tata Group and other rural–development projects.
However, in the event of an economy slow–down, the Tata firm will have to weigh the importance
and decide whether to sustain its businesses or to fulfill this culture. Moreover, Tata already has a
liability of $7.4 billion in its accounts.
As the case studies says, Ratan Tata is the chief steward handling all the main contracts himself and
is vastly involved in the details of his businesses. He is also the main decision maker for most of the
Tata group's main contracts.
The fact that Ratan Tata is unmarried and doesn't have a children, it was even tougher of who to take
over his positon, there wasn't a suitable candidate to be the next successor. (Luthans and Doh, 2009)
With the acquirement of Corus Mills of $13 billion, it also means that Tata group is taking the debt
of $7.4 billion and which in turn poses as a challenge. And with Corus' high operational cost, it will
wane the profit margin of Tata Steels.
The bidding of Jaguar and Land Rover will be a huge jump

The Namesake Character Analysis
In the novel The Namesake, author Jhumpa Lahiri offers an insight of what it's like for immigrants
that come here to America and try to associate themselves into such strange customs for someone
who grew up with completely distinct ones, in this case, Ashima and Ashuke a Bengali couple. They
try their best to fit in, but at the same time, they work hard to not lose those traditions and customs
they know and grew up with. They especially strive for their children to accept and acknowledge
these customs while they're growing with completely separate ones. As their children become older
they grow farther and farther away from their own family and customs try to pursue something they

A name that once reminded him of that horrifying day he almost died now brings him joy. Towards
the end, Gogol regrets changing his name the name that meant so much to his father.
"Gogol frowns, and his lower lip trembles. Only then, forced at six months to confront his destiny,
does he begin to cry." This quote especially makes me think of how he's already rejecting his
cultural traditions such as picking a dollar bill, some dirt, or a ballpoint pen to see what his future
withholds. Which reminds me of the traditions I refused to partake in since I was little till now
because I thought they were very odd and strange compared to what they do here. I used to eat so
many different kinds of things while I was growing up in Ecuador including Guinea Pig and when I
came here I found it revolting seeing as it's a pet here and not food.
There was so much to absorb from the Bengali culture. What fascinated me the most was how
children often don't have an official name till they're in their teens but instead a pet name because
their parents haven't figured out what their good name should be, that's what Ashima wanted to do
with Gogol, but couldn't due to the different customs we have in America. When children are first

2.1 History
In 1907, Jamsetji Tata, an industrialist, established Indians biggest and first steel plant. At the same
time it was Asia's initial private sector steel company. The reason of Tata Steel's establishing was
that Jamsetji had the idea of developing an iron and steel industry in his own country.

2.2 Strategic drift
One significant point in position analysis is the strategic drift, which is defined and illustrated
(exhibit 1.1) in appendix 1.
Since its establishment, Tata has shown a strategy of incremental change. Arguably, that point was
important because so the group might vary within the current market. In the nineteenth – century
steel was seen as an unprofitable section. Even more than 50 independent steel producers went into
bankruptcy in the USA (Business Monitor International Ltd, 2010: 54).
In the late twentieth century, demand growth was strongly low. In contrast, the twenty –first century
saw a boom in demand. For instance, Tata bought weaker players internationally, such as NatSteel in
2004, which was Tata Steel's first overseas acquisition, and the Anglo – Dutch giant Corus in April
2007. Through the investment in Corus, Tata has created a manufacturing and marketing network in
Europe, South East Asia and the pacific – rim countries. These acquisitions were also the result of
using a strategy of

Growth of the Automobile Industry in India
The automobile industry is the fastest growing sector in India. Growth in consumption patterns has
encouraged tremendous improvement in manufacturing sector and the auto industry has been
growing at a rapid pace recording "over 2.06 million four–wheelers (passenger cars, light, medium
and heavy commercial vehicles, multi–utility vehicles such as jeeps), and over 9 million two–and–
three wheelers (scooters, motorcycles, mopeds, and three wheelers) – in 2006–07." (SBH India,
2008)
It was this promising outlook for Indian auto industry that forced Fiat into a collaboration with Tata
Corporation India in 2007. However within few months, troubles were reported and by 2010, it was
officially considered an unfortunate venture since Fiat was losing in terms of sales and profits so
rapidly that it made Fiat and Tata rethink their Joint venture. In 2011, the two companies decide to
reorganize their distribution channels to allow separate distribution facilities.
Fiat Motors had initially planned to sell through Tata dealers but the channel tie–up did not prove
profitable as evidenced by sagging sales and in 2011 it was decided that separate dealerships might
work better.
"The joint–venture agreement with Tata Motors stands. We are altering our marketing strategy. We
have identified 20 cities where Fiat cars will now be sold separately and independently," said
Ranjeev Kapoor, CEO of Tata India. (BS reporters 2011)
Interestingly while Fiat sales were falling by 15 percent in India,

Corporate Social Responsibility
CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (CSR) is a term describing a company's obligation to
be accountable to all of its stakeholder in all its operation and activities. Socially responsible
companies consider the full scope of their impact on communities and the environment when
making decisions, balancing the needs of stakeholder with their need to make profit. A company's
stakeholders are all those who are influenced by and can influence a company's decisions and action,
both locally and globally. Business stakeholders include(but are not limited to) employees,
suppliers, customer, community organizations, subsidiaries and affiliates, joint venture partners,

Some would argue that the only reason to take on social projects is for utilitarian reasons, such as
currying favor with the public or with government, or to improve market standing. Others, such as
the philosopher Michael E. Berumen, suggest that a business is property belonging to the owners,
not stakeholders, and that a business is not equivalent to a mini–state for the purpose of creating
social justice or carrying out social planning, and that the owners have the right to dispose of their
property as they see fit within the limits of morality, including for profit, social good, or both.
Proponents of CSR would suggest a number of reasons why self interested corporations, seeking to
solely to maximize profits are unable to advance the interests of society as a whole: Corporations
care little for the welfare of the workers, and given the opportunity will move production to
sweatshops in less well regulated countries. Unchecked, companies will squander scarce resources.
Companies do not pay the full costs of their impact. For example the costs of cleaning pollution
often fall on society in general. As a result profits of corporations are enhanced at the expense of
social or ecological welfare. Regulation is the best way to ensure that companies

Specializing in auto–mobiles, Tata started losing focus on its niche and went on to acquire new
businesses in completely different industries massively. This included plans to invest $28 billion in
steel, autos, telecom, power, chemicals, and more. Unfortunately, the lack of central strategy
resulted in investments on the wrong industries, such as the Tata Teleservices (TTSL), a mobile
telephony business. It yielded the worse negative margins amongst the whole of Tata Group's
businesses (Pannu, Singh, 2013 ). Another separate industry has it that Tata Steel was loaded with
$7.4billion of liability for the acquisition of Corus. On its core auto–mobile business, Tata Motors

Russi Mody As an outstanding man–manager in his heyday with a hands–on style which earned him
the Padma Bhushan, Moday had many precedents.
He was appointed as Tisco's Managing Director in 1974 and became the chairman in 1984.
He displayed a singular lack of finesse during his last few years with Tatas.
He was to officially retire on May 21 1993, but was sacked on April 19, 1993. Had he behaved with
greater decorum, he could've had a much more graceful exit and assured himself pride of place in
Tata history.
Mody had accused Ratan Tata (Tisco's then deputy chairman) and Jamshed. J. Irani (its managing
director) of mismanaging Tisco's affairs and causing it's share prices to crash.
He aslo threatened to launch a campaign to mobilize support for himself from shareholders and
financial institutions.
Since he refused to agree with the management policies, he was unanimously voted out and was
fired.
Mody wanted to move up Aditya Kashyap (corporate executive director), his protege and Ishaat

A report on Indian Iron and Steel Industry
OVERVIEW
1.1 Background The Indian iron and steel industry is nearly a century old, with Tata Iron & Steel Co
(Tata Steel) as the first integrated steel plant to be set up in 1907. It was the first core sector to be
completely freed from the licensing regime (in 1990–91) and the pricing and distribution controls.
The steel industry is expanding worldwide. For a number of years it has been benefiting from the
exceptionally buoyant Asian economies (mainly India and China). The economic modernization

This is a growth of 4–5 per cent over the two–year period. However, according to IISI, the cost of
raw materials and energy was to continue to represent a major challenge for the world's steel
industry. Higher production of value–added products, capacity expansion, upgradation of production
process achieveing cost effective production in an environment friendly manner, have been the
major thrust areas of the Indian Iron and steel producers in the recent times. After liberalization,
there have been no shortages of iron and steel materials in the country. 1.4.1 Production of Carbon
Steel The total production of finished carbon steel in the country has been 42.636 million tonnes in
2005–06 as compared to 29.77 million tonnes in 2000–01, indicating an average increase of 57 per
cent. The high share of the secondary sector in finished steel production is largely due to substantial
supplies of semis, the basic feed material from the main producers for conversion to needed shapes
by rolling.

Job Design and Employees Motivation
All in a day's work Employee empowerment is the latest buzzword in business and a variety of Tata
companies are working overtime to place their people in the driver's seat The crowd holds its
collective breath as Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar prepares to strike. But the batsman, B
Muthuraman, is unperturbed. The delivery is sent flying into the stands. The cheers get louder as the
Tata Steel managing director raises his bat in triumph. Not real life, but an inspirational film. "It's a
part of our Vision 2007 campaign," explains Niroop Mahanty, vice president (HRM), Tata Steel.
Adds BN Sarangi, chief, HR/IR, Tata Steel, "The idea was to motivate employees to accomplish the
impossible, like hit a six off Shoaib Akhtar." Or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is one of the key elements of the company's Stars, or Special Thanks and Recognition Systems
programme. Since its launch three years ago, the globally acclaimed model has triggered soaring
employee satisfaction scores, besides numerous employee suggestions and innovations, many of
which are best practices today. "Whether it's an indigenously manufactured bathroom mat or a new
chemical for the laundry, every idea is big and shared across the hotel chain," says Mr Martyris. "It
has shattered the myth that only people at the top are creatively inclined." There is a huge reservoir
of innovation waiting to be tapped among all levels of employees. The success of the earlier
programme led Indian Hotels to introduce 'Stars Plus', a spin–off for its service providers, and 'Joy
at the Workplace', which is aimed at team building and bringing cheer to the office. From
celebrating birthdays to organising cricket matches between the various Taj properties, the objective
is to keep employees motivated. Instead of major initiatives, HR is engaging in small but innovative
activities which might appear mundane but make the employee feel at home while at work. The
human factor HR has also discovered the lost art of listening. Employee satisfaction surveys and
primary mood reflectors within the organisation have become sacred. This helps in

Another challenge is to formulate strategies for over 100 companies in more than 80 countries.
Besides this, another problem of Tata Group is the high involvement of Ratan Tata, who is the chief
steward of the group of nine senior executives sitting on the boards of the Tata companies, in both
the negotiations of major deals and the details of his auto–making, telecom or steel businesses
(Luthans and Doh 2009). The next challenge for Tata is on how to absorb the struggling Corus mills.
Other challenges for the future include deciding on which businesses to spin–off and which to
pursue, what will happen to the conglomerate during an economy slow–down. The most challenge
issue for Tata Group perhaps would be to fill the void left behind by the energetic and visionary Mr
Ratan Tata – Chairman of the Tata Group, when he retire (Koontz and Weihrich 2010).
3. Secondary Problems

3.1.1 Diversification of investments and businesses
From the case study, it is evident that a major problem for Tata Group is its diversification of its
investments and businesses over so many different countries. The group is subjected inevitably to
the different market situations and the culture of each individual market.
3.1.2 The continuation of operation of Corus mills
Another long–term problem for Tata Group is whether they should continue operating the struggling

  • 40. One significant point in position analysis is the strategic drift, which is defined and illustrated (exhibit 1.1) in appendix 1. Since its establishment, Tata has shown a strategy of incremental change. Arguably, that point was important because so the group might vary within the current market. In the nineteenth – century steel was seen as an unprofitable section. Even more than 50 independent steel producers went into bankruptcy in the USA (Business Monitor International Ltd, 2010: 54). In the late twentieth century, demand growth was strongly low. In contrast, the twenty –first century saw a boom in demand. For instance, Tata bought weaker players internationally, such as NatSteel in 2004, which was Tata Steel's first overseas acquisition, and the Anglo – Dutch giant Corus in April 2007. Through the investment in Corus, Tata has created a manufacturing and marketing network in Europe, South East Asia and the pacific – rim countries. Growth in consumption patterns has encouraged tremendous improvement in manufacturing sector and the auto industry has been growing at a rapid pace recording "over 2.06 million four–wheelers (passenger cars, light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles, multi–utility vehicles such as jeeps), and over 9 million two–and– three wheelers (scooters, motorcycles, mopeds, and three wheelers) – in 2006–07." (SBH India, 2008) It was this promising outlook for Indian auto industry that forced Fiat into a collaboration with Tata Corporation India in 2007. However within few months, troubles were reported and by 2010, it was officially considered an unfortunate venture since Fiat was losing in terms of sales and profits so rapidly that it made Fiat and Tata rethink their Joint venture. In 2011, the two companies decide to reorganize their distribution channels to allow separate distribution facilities. Fiat Motors had initially planned to sell through Tata dealers but the channel tie–up did not prove profitable as evidenced by sagging sales and in 2011 it was decided that separate dealerships might work better. "The joint–venture agreement with Tata Motors stands. We are altering our marketing strategy. We have identified 20 cities where Fiat cars will now be sold separately and independently," said Ranjeev Kapoor, CEO of Tata India. Socially responsible companies consider the full scope of their impact on communities and the environment when making decisions, balancing the needs of stakeholder with their need to make profit. A company's stakeholders are all those who are influenced by and can influence a company's decisions and action, both locally and globally. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some would argue that the only reason to take on social projects is for utilitarian reasons, such as currying favor with the public or with government, or to improve market standing. Others, such as the philosopher Michael E. Berumen, suggest that a business is property belonging to the owners, not stakeholders, and that a business is not equivalent to a mini–state for the purpose of creating social justice or carrying out social planning, and that the owners have the right to dispose of their property as they see fit within the limits of morality, including for profit, social good, or both. Proponents of CSR would suggest a number of reasons why self interested corporations, seeking to solely to maximize profits are unable to advance the interests of society as a whole: Corporations care little for the welfare of the workers, and given the opportunity will move production to sweatshops in less well regulated countries. Unchecked, companies will squander scarce resources. Companies do not pay the full costs of their impact. For example the costs of cleaning pollution often fall on society in general. As a result profits of corporations are enhanced at the expense of social or ecological welfare. Regulation is the best way to ensure that companies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
