1. GROUP VIOLENCE - DESENSITIZATION - VIOLENCE IN THE MEDIA

2. Objective:
I can identify violence and how it has impacted my life
● I can identify the four factors that contribute to an individual’s choice to act in
violent ways.
● I can recognize the difference between Emotional and Instrumental Violence.
● I can identify that people are more violent in groups than when acting alone.
● I can infer each individual is ultimately responsible for his or her behavior.
● I can assess the impact to myself and others from my incident.
● I can identify violence in the media.

3. Trigger: The event that releases emotional arousal.
Arousal: A physiological state that is a reaction to stress. The body is
getting ready for action. Involuntary symptoms such as heart beating faster,
breathing increases, face flushes, hands shake or sweat.
Weapon: Every act of violence requires a weapon, a sharp tongue,
hands, knife, etc.
Target: Sometimes the target is a trigger.
Four Factors in Aggression

4. Emotional Violence
People commit acts of emotional violence in
response to pain, a threat or frustration.

5. Instrumental Violence
● Instrumental Violence is used to attain a
goal or an award.
● People who commit acts of Instrumental
Aggression may not be ANGRY!
