Camera
We used a Canon 100D for filming, this
meant we had a good level of quality.
We used two different lens’. The 18-135mm for close-
ups and the 18-55mm for wider shots.
We decided from our prelim tasks that we wanted a
higher quality.
We also used the tripod more as at the start of the
process we did a number of handheld shots that were
shaky and un-useable.
Editing
To edit we used Final Cut Pro, we used several effects such as enhancing the colour on the
clips of the little girl in the memory, and taking away saturation from the shots of the older
protagonist.
Ident
For the ident we liked the idea of spreading the name ‘Acrylic Productions’ onto
paper like paint, so I faded it in to match the the movement of the pallet knife, and
then also added the shock feature to make the letter move and look more
interesting.
Title
For the title I used similar
effects to give the letters a
scared/menacing effect, and
added some red to the outline,
to be reminiscent of blood.
The title starts with a clip of a
hand turning off a light to
symbolise the end of safety,
as the opening ident has a playful happy feeling to it, and plays on the primal fear of
the dark we’ve all felt turning off our bedroom light as a child.
Sound
We used a handheld sound recording device to record diegetic sound for the film,
such as a three minute recording we did of atmospheric sounds in the park so it
would sound real.
To create the music we used Garage Band, as it allows you to record multiple
instruments using a keyboard, so that we could have a background string
ensemble as well as piano melody and chords.
Staging
We deliberately re-arranged and staged the
character’s bedroom to reveal aspects of her
character and hints to the plot.
For example we wanted to hint at the character
being interested in art to add depth to the
meaning of the child’s drawing. So we left the
fashion photographs on the wall and allowed
them to become a main feature of the shot. Her
room is also littered with little pieces of
equipment such as the fabric and discarded
sewing on the floor, and the paint brushes and
water colours on her desk.
We also included hints to the menace of the plot. Such as
the painting that can be seen in the mirror, which is actually
a ballerina but looks at a glance like a person hunched over
in pain. There is also a black glove lying on her bedside
table, similar to the one the figure is wearing in the younger
girl’s memory, it is darker than anything else on the table to
demonstrate it is out of place, and to very subtly present
something as slightly wrong.
