1. Historical Background
Until the 1970s, tourism was not regarded as an important economic activity in Malaysia. The
Tourism Development Corporation of Malaysia (TDC) was set up in 1972, with the responsibility to
act as a development authority, but the sector was given a low priority. Dut partly to limited
financial allocations, TDC faced constraints in the effective performance of its catalytic role.
As a result, Malaysia remained a relatively unknown destination, while other countries in the region
such asSingapore, Thailand and Indonesia built on their established reputations as mass tourism ...

Some smaller sites have attracted fewer visitors, but are known internationally among a sector of the
potential market. Examples include Fraser's Hill and Kuala Selangor, both of which are of particular
interest for birdwatchers and are now on the regular itineraries of some specialist and general tour
companies.

The market in specialist adventure activities (four–wheel drive, microlight, whitewater rafting, etc.)
is more recent but is rapidly expanding. Most of these activities only marginally qualify as
ecotourism when practiced in parucularly careful ways, and some are harmful to the environment.
They are indicative of the conflicts that can arise between adventure tourism, nature–based tourism
and ecotourism, both in objectives and practice.
Despite the fact that some tourists have pursued activities that could be defined as ecotourism for

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to provide abridgment of the current state of affairs in Kenya, critically
examine the impacts and the challenges of ecotourism; investigate the potential of ecotourism as a
strategy for sustainable development and suggest ways to improve Ecotourism in Kenya. What are

The meaning and use of the term are plagued by disagreements, confusion, and propaganda
(Weaver, 1999).The term ecotourism merged in the late 1980s as a direct

result of the world's acknowledgement and reaction to sustainable practices and global ecological
practice (D. Dianatis, 1999). Ecotourism was first defined as "travelling to relatively undisturbed or
uncontaminated natural areas with the specific objective of studying, admiring, and enjoying the
scenery and its wild plants and animals, as well as existing cultural manifestation (both past and
present) found in these areas. ( Ceballos– Lascurain, 1987:14;1991a,b)."
Ecotourism definition by Ecotourism in Australia "Ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary
focus on experiencing natural areas that fosters environmental and cultural understanding,
appreciation and conservation (Ecotourism Australia, 2003)".
International Ecotourism Society (2004) "Responsible travel to natural areas that conserve the
environmental and sustain the well–being of local people".
Irrespective of unique perspectives and different definitions, there is considerable consensus that
ecotourism must be beneficial to local communities and have a positive effect on protecting the
environment (Buchsbaum, 2004). As the term ecotourism has evolved, definitions have become
more precise, with stronger ties to principles of sustainable development (Blamey, 2001).

Ecotourism in South American Countries Essay
Ecotourism in South American Countries
Synopsis:
We are living in a world that tends to put developed nations against indigenous peoples. Foreign
developers seeking cheap labor and natural resources on untouched lands are exploiting cultures that
have survived for centuries on their own.
South America is a continent that possesses rich indigenous culture that is still relatively untouched
by outsiders. Americans have the ability to preserve that heritage through organized efforts to
encourage certain types of visitors to indigenous areas to create an economy that will take the place
of potential mining, logging, and ranching enterprises. That economy is ecotourism.

To act as a means of improving the status of these poor countries, the idea of Ecotourism was
developed. Though the idea of Ecotourism was one with good intentions, the local people in the
countries where Ecotourism has been in effect are not gaining much at all.
History of Ecotourism:
The idea that led to Ecotourism emerged in the late sixties when people like Oswaldo Muñoz, now
president of the Ecuadorian Ecotourism Association, started guiding tourists around their countries
to view natural wonders. Many companies began to set up lodging near parks and reserves and even
began to develop tours of those areas. The vision of showing off exotic plants, animals and the
overall natural beauty of countries like Ecuador also attracted them. Yet early on, this did little to
help the local economies. It actually contributed to other problems: In Ecuador, half of the country's
rain forest disappeared, and environmental groups and other organizations promoting ecotourism
flocked to places where endangered species, including many indigenous populations, lived. But with
the growing environmental awareness of

Ecotourism vs Volunteer Tourism
The discussion on ecotourism and its essence has led to over eighty different definitions of the topic
(Fennell, 2008). However, one of the most used and comprehensive definitions is reported by
Weaver (ibidem). It describes ecotourism as "a form of tourism that fosters" awareness, education
and enjoyment of the natural environment and the local values in a sustainable way (Weaver,
2001a:15). Hence, ecotourism, while thriving for profitability, aims to promote education and
cultural awareness of destinations without compromising their ecosystems. Eco–tourists demand for
more authentic and meaningful forms of travel and; according to Orams (1996) (in Weaver, 2001a),
they can be classified in two different categories: hard and soft ones. The hard eco–tourists believe
in "radical" self–commitment with their destination, in order to ameliorate the natural environment
(give back something) through "not–mediated" (Weaver, 2001b:106), challenging physical activities
immersed in the site's nature (ibidem). However, the soft visitors have shallower levels of
commitment to the environment than hard eco–tourists. Indeed, while hard eco–visitors tend to
organise independently (where high competence and time availability are required and low level of
services expected on–site), soft ones rely on eco–tour–operators to organise less physically
demanding tours (tab. 1.1a) (ibidem). Nevertheless, further distinctions can be created between these
two categories depending on the antagonism

The Concept Of Ecotourism And Its Effects On The Environment
The concept of Ecotourism ( a concept pioneered during the early 1970's to combat the negative
impacts of mass tourism) is defined as "environmentally conscious, enlightening travel, to relatively
undisturbed natural areas in order to enjoy and appreciate nature, while promoting local
environmental conservation...and providing local socio–economic benefits through the participation
of the local communities". Responsible ecotourism programs are those that (1) minimize negative
aspects of mass tourism on the environment, (2) contributes to environmental preservation efforts,
(3) is economically beneficial for the local population and, (4) educates the tourist themselves.
Ecotourism today is one of the tourism industry 's fastest growing subsector, with an estimated
global annual growth of 15–19%. With this much money involved, governments as well as, tourism
corporations heavily promote ecotourism programs, with their claims of environmental and social
sensitivity but, there exist well founded concerns on its actual environmental impact, and whether it
is viable as a solution to the world 's environmental problems. In this paper we will try to dissect the
supposed benefits brought by ecotourism and provide an alternative and more viable solution.
We will start by attacking the claim (1) which is that ecotourism minimizes the negative aspects of
mass tourism. Due to the fact that environmental regulations in areas where ecotourism programs
are often badly implemented or

The Impacts And Benefits Of Ecotourism To Costa Rica
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impacts and benefits of ecotourism to Costa Rica in the
perspective of the environment, local community and development of tourism sustainability; the
ways ecotourism creates awareness of the importance of natural and cultural conservation; and the
prospective benefits and risks of ecotourism to Costa Rica in term of the local community, the
biodiversity and the environment.
2.0 The Impacts and Benefits of Ecotourism to Costa Rica As tourism is clearly going mainstream in
Costa Rica currently, it must have leave an impacts to the country, be it an advantages or
disadvantages to the country.
2.1 Protection of Nature As mentioned earlier, in 1983, almost half of the woodland was cut down.
But when Costa Rica began the industry of ecotourism and build more national parks and wildlife
parks, the annual deforestation rate had dropped. In 1998 the deforestation rate had dropped to zero,
and currently, the forest cover has increased to more than 50%, which doubled from 1983 (Blasiak
2011). The expansion of the protected area of the country to 30% had saved many areas from being
used for logging, farming or mining, which will cause a lot of flora and fauna to extinct, given that

To point it out, with the overflowing amount of tourists coming in to Costa Rica, new hotels,
facilities and infrastructures will have to be built. As a result, disturbance of wildlife and vegetation
damage will happen, and as a matter of fact, in the Manuel Antonio area, this has already cause
biodiversity losses and it is expected that the same will happen to the Monteverde region not far in
the future (Koens

Taking a Look at Ecoturism
Ecotourism is the capable venture out to common zones that saves nature's domain and enhances the
prosperity of nearby individuals. The Eco–tourism is to instruct voyagers and to give trusts to
biological preservation. Encourage regard for diverse societies and human rights. Ecotourism is
about uniting preservation, groups and practical travel. Ecotourism is held as essential by the
individuals who partake in it so that future eras may encounter parts of nature's turf untouched by
human mediation. With this said, we can decrepit some basic standards of ecotourism. There are a
few sorts of exercises advertised in "ecotourism". Ecotourism advertises responsible travel; this is
possible in the event that we decrepit at any rate of the basic principles we should follow in order to
preserve nature. Initially, they must minimize sway, the less they upset nature, the less effect will
their vicinity desert. They ought to likewise fabricate natural and social mindfulness and
appreciation. In a few societies, it is greatly insolent to do certain things. In the event that we
demonstrate that we are mindful of their society and admiration their ways, were are demonstrating
that we are great individuals. Give positive encounters to both guests and hosts. In the event that we
do all we are going to a certain spot it ought to just be right to monitor the area in any capacity
conceivable regardless of the possibility that it's monetarily. Give money related profits and

Ecotourism in the Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica and Tanzania
When it comes to the topic of ecotourism, most of us will readily agree that it is a less harmful
alternative to mass–tourism and that it promotes responsible and low–impact travel to areas where
flora, fauna and cultural heritage are the primary drawing power. Where this agreement usually
ends, however, is on the question of what the impact of ecotourism actually is and what its long–
term consequences are. Whereas some are convinced that ecotourism provides the basis for
sustainable development, particularly in places that suffer from exploitation and excessive resources'
usage, and that could only improve the general conditions of the local people, others maintain that
we are still far from true ecotourism, for many are those in the ... Show more content on

Nonetheless, since an overwhelming majority of the industry is owned and managed by foreign
operators, the social and economic contribution to the Galapagos Islands are minimal; "[w]hile
foreign visitors outnumber domestic tourists almost four to one, [...] just 15.1 percent of the foreign
expenditures stayed in the Galapagos local economy, compared to 95.2 percent of the money spent
by Ecuadorians" (130–1). Both mass tourism and ecotourism can arguably provide an excellent
opportunity for development, but their negative impact is sure to be seen, and could potentially
outweigh the benefits that they have brought. Another country that has significantly embraced
ecotourism is Costa Rica. A tiny Central American country located just a few hours' flight from the
United States, Costa Rica rapidly transformed to a green destination, and in 1992 the U.S.
Adventure Travel Society declared Costa Rica "the number one ecotourism destination in the world"
(160). Its success finds its root in a mix of positive conditions that most of the other ecotourism sites
lack, varying from a stable democracy to the abolition of the army, and including one of the highest

Ecotourism, Tourism, and Development in Mexico Essay
Ecotourism, Tourism, and Development in Mexico
"The issue of growth in the travel industry – how much, how fast, what kind – is crucial to the future
of communities, local lifestyles and cultures, and the natural environment. There are a variety of
instabilities and inequities associated with the expansion of tourism. If the social costs of infinite
growth (human consequences of ecological pollution, centralized concentration of power,
inequitable income distribution) are as high as they appear to be, our current social systems cannot
support such growth indefinitely. Tourism remains a passive luxury for thousands of travelers. This
must change" (Rethinking Tourism and Ecotravel by Deborah McLaren, 1998, p. 6).

While these activities are most intimately tied to the environment, it is important to recognize that
any tourist activity necessarily impacts the environment, and any development that supports tourism
and travel has environmental consequences. We found that the ocean, reef, fish, beach, mangroves,
jungle, ancient and contemporary Mayan culture, and drinking water are all being drastically
effected. We will examine the problems and what can be done to increase environmentally ethical
(eco)tourism, which could be considered tourism that focuses on experiencing and learning about
the nonhuman and human aspects of a place while critically examining the effects of one's
individual actions and the combined effects of one's role as part of a group.
Our study area stretched from Cancun (the northeast tip of the Yucatan Peninsula) southward along
the Carribean coast as far south as Akumal (although development has went far beyond there.

Its market reforms still aren't complete and its per capita income is still much lower than any
advanced country, which has led to China's high inequality. Along with economic issues, the rapid
economic growth has caused multiple other issues. China's main focus has been solely on its
economic aspects for so long that it almost seems as if they have been blind to the environmental
degradation, increasing rural crisis, growing unemployment and poverty, government corruption,
deteriorating public services, as well as escalating social unrests that is and has been occurring for a
while now. Although all of these issues at hand are important, the issue that I will be focusing on is
the massive environmental degradation and how it has been affected by the increases in Buddhist
religious freedom and ecotourism.
In 1949, China's natural forests were nationalized and private forests were collectivized, this gave
state enterprises control over the forests. The main problem that came out of this was that these
enterprises promoted leadership with higher profits from timber production. This caused managers
of companies to try to increase their profits from timber production but wouldn't use any of those
profits for replanting timber resources because they had no incentive to. This led to China's annual
forest volume harvested to be greater than the growth in forest volume, which directly connects to
deforestation. "China had

Ecotourism In 'See The Planet, Save The Planet'
Most people hear the word ecotourism and immediately tune out because they assume it does not
apply to them. Well you know what happens when someone assumes. The facts are that at a point in
someone's life their parents dragged them to go on a tour of a some sort of nature. The parents
probably told them not to hurt it and in doing so they have been an ecotourist! Ecotourism is
responsible travel to natural areas or nature–based areas that conserves the environment and
preserves the well–being of local people. Some ecotourists mess up sometimes and others do not.
Although many people think Ecotourism is butchering the environment, it actually can be beneficial
for the environment and the people involved. Even though people may cause damage ... Show more

Most people, at some point, try to do something to the best of their ability, yet in the end it does not
end up perfect. No one is perfect so everyone will screw up at one point or another. In Eviana
Hartmans's article "See The Planet, Save The Planet" she explains that one of the most common
thing people do, which is "one of the worst environmental actions you can do", is buy a plane ticket.
The carbon emission from the plane are very harmful to the environment, yet 1,731,342 ride on an
airplane a day. Most people do not know the harm a plane can do to the environment. The carbon
that is released into the atmosphere traps heat which is most known as climate change. In Katy
Koontz's article "Is Ecotourism Killing The Golden Goose" she explains that "locals are encouraged
to protect their resources and provide quality goods and services rather than pursue environmentally
damaging activities". They are starting to try to change the things that they do to lower the harm
they are doing to the environment. They are minimizing the carbon footprint that they are putting on
the Earth. There are many different activities you can do that will not hurt the environment. In Katy
Koontz's article she explains that some "Guides seeking bug tips reportedly drive off the road,
harassing wildlife in an attempt to give tourists a closer look at the animals". People's greed may
mean the end of the healthy environment that we live in today. People willing to hurt the Earth for a
few extra dollars need to change the way that they think because that is not healthy or right. We only
have one earth. Yet later in Katy Koontz's article she says that some eco–tour operators are
"preparing people to look with new eyes at what they see or have a new consciousness". All people
need to do is change the way that they think about the environment. They need to think of the world

Eco Tourism in Australia
In Twenty–First Century, pollution is a big issue in over the world so people are carefully pay more
their attention on protecting the environment than ever. Therefore, ecotourism has been introduced
to customer by many tourism businesses include hotel, resort, airline or safari. This essay will
compare and contrast some tourism business's sustainable programs such as Eco Beach Resort,
Habitat HQ Hostel and Qantas Airline. Then it will discuss the impacts of these sustainable options
may have on the consumer's decision process.
Now people very care how their activities can impact to the environment. People want to live close
the wildlife and less impact to the environment. To participant in world protecting environment,
many tourism businesses try to introduce their green program to their customer. The essay compares
three different types of tourism businesses and their green programs.
First of all, it is Eco Beach Resort which is located in Broome, West Australia. This is completely
one hundred percent eco resort. According to their website (Eco Beach Resort, 2014), their mission
is providing high standard and fabulous wilderness experience to the customer and trying to leave

Benefits Of Ecotourism: New Belgium
George Wallace's first Ecotourism Principle requires minimizing negative impacts to locals and the
environment (Wallace, 1999). New Belgium directly reflects this principle through their core value
of being environmental stewards by, "minimizing resource consumption, maximizing energy
efficiency and recycling," (New Belgium Brewery, 2017b). As stated previously, New Belgium has
their own wastewater treatment plant that promotes to reduce, reuse, and recycle water and
eventually return to the city for residential use. Furthermore, their core value of constantly
innovating quality and enhancing improvements enforces minimal negative impacts to locals and the
environment (New Belgium Brewery, 2017b).
The second Principle of Ecotourism encourages ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
New Belgium harmonizes the need of the company, employees, and their families (New Belgium
Brewery, 2017b). Barley, yeast, and grains are used to make beer, and the byproduct is typically
discarded by other breweries. However, New Belgium collects all their spent grain and yeast and
sells it to local farmers to feed livestock for $30 per semi–truckload, seven times a day (Personal
Communication, 2017). This is very beneficial to the local farmers who reuse grains and yeast to
feed their livestock so that money is kept within the community. Also, New Belgium points out that
they are, "incredibly lucky to create something fine that enhances people's live while surpassing
[their] consumers' expectations," (New Belgium Brewery, 2017b). Thus, New Belgium is benefiting
locals by providing world–class beer close to home.
Wallace's sixth, and final, Principle of Ecotourism offers locals and tourism employees to
understand why tourists come to visit natural areas (Wallace, 1999). A few of New Belgium's core
values align with the sixth Principle: producing world–class beers, encouraging responsible
enjoyment of beer and beer culture, and having fun (New Belgium Brewery, 2017b). New Belgium's
world–class beer lures in people from all around the world. Offering free brewery tours as well as
free tastings during the tour, locals can be educated and

'Sustainable Tourism is a Myth.' To what extent do you agree with this statement? (15 Marks)
Sustainable Tourism is essentially an industry committed to making a low impact on the natural
environment and local culture, while helping to generate income and employment for local people.
As Global economists forecast continuing international tourism growth, this continuous growth will
place great stress on remaining biologically diverse habitats and indigenous cultures, which are
often used to support mass tourism. Therefore it is important that sustainable tourism is promoted
and that people are educated about the opportunities provided in order to minimize the effects that

Furthermore, both LEDC's and MEDC's are becoming to reliant on mass tourism and are not taking
into the account the impacts in the long term for example 85% of Majorca's income is through
tourism which means there is a lack of economic independence because if the island were to
suddenly become unfashionable then the Island would be left in a vulnerable income. This is
especially the case here as tourism has destroyed farming and agricultural labour which used to be
the main source of income which means Majorca has no other form of income to fall back on if
tourism was to decrease in the area.
Moreover, one of the main issues that sustainable tourism tries to embrace is having a low impact on
tourism but many countries who undertake in mass tourism have failed to properly take this into
account. For example, tourism around the Great Barrier Reef in Australia is the largest commercial
activity there and accounts for 87% of the reefs economic output. However, this tourism has created
pollution through waste disposal, pollution from boats etc. This easily damages the Coral reef which
thus affects the species dependent on them. In addition, tourists disturb the wildlife as many seabirds
nest on the ground and when disturbed leave the nest which thus exposes young or eggs to predators
and developments for tourism damage coastal ecosystems such as the mangrove forests and
estuaries

Costa Rica: The Accidental Green Tourist
General Problem/Issue
Costa Rica is labeled as one of the green countries in the world. It has faced its fair share of
environmental concerns going back to when it was the number one producer of beef for McDonald's
in the 1970s. The country experienced extreme deforestation as a result of the increased cattle
grazing. Since then, Costa Rica has managed to move away from deforestation through efforts of
forest conservation, nature reserves, and national parks. It has used ecotourism as a tool, and has
proven to be the biggest helper in reversing the status of environmental degradation. Ecotourism has
proven to be a very lucrative industry helping to sustain the country, but has shown to have both
positive and negative impacts on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many scholars argue that the progress in education offered by ecotourism is capable of educating the
masses about environmental concerns and how the environment can be sustained through different
measures. Then there are scholars such as Ling, Pleumarom, and Raman that argue against
ecotourism and the celebration of the impacts of tourism. These scholars have researched that there
is data supporting mass–tourism caused by ecotourism, which leads to an exacerbation of
ecosystems degradation, loss of biological and cultural diversity, disruption of local economies, and
displacement and dispossession of communities and indigenous peoples. Their study led them to
Bangkok as one of the locations where there are cases of detrimental effects of logging: "massive
development projects – some involving logging –were in full steam in national parks countrywide."
These types of projects are funded by loans from the World Bank's Social Investment Project and
the Japanese Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund.
Ecotourism is becoming a larger phenomenon with more concentration on the environment and
society. According to Buckley, "Ecotourism has now been debated in theory, and attempted in
practice, for at least two decades." Buckley has shown supportive information that ecotourism can
be utilized in a positive way: "mechanisms by which

The Importance Of The Green Environment
Society as a whole is struggling to balance old dominant western environment ideals with new green
environment ideals. As science shows the effects of climate change, and the detriments of a Western
consumerist culture on the environment, many people are shifting towards a more green, eco–
friendly philosophy. This shift of being conscious of the environment, has prompted some people
and companies to make honest changes to preserve and help the environment. This starting shift in
society of being eco–friendly has prompted many businesses to jump on this trend, as it looks better
to consumers and often saves or makes the companies money. Despite, this new societal shift toward
a green paradigm, many parts of society want to hold onto to dominant western ideals of controlling
and using the environment's resources to the advantage of humans. Society is currently wrestling,
with whether to follow the ideas of the dominant western paradigm, or the newer green paradigm.
Many parts of society are shifting towards a green paradigm, but is this for genuine environmental
reasons, or to make money and products, that continue to feed into the consumerism ideals of the
old dominant western paradigm? The dominant western environmental paradigm can be described
as, "the anthropocentric belief that humans are separate from and superior to the natural
environment, which has status only as 'resource' or commodity available for exploitation through
technology. It has no intrinsic worth."

Benefits Of Ecotourism In Kenya
1.0 Introduction
To study the ecotourism in Kenya, this report was written. Ecotourism is a travel to protected areas
that attempts to be low impact and small scale. It helps to educate the traveller, provide funds for
conservation, directly benefit the economic development and political empowerment of local
communities, and cultivate respect for different cultures and for human rights (Honey 2008, 33).
However, the concept evolved to encompass considerably more than simply "nature–based travel" to
"natural" areas, with subsequent definitions including the importance of distributing environmental
and socio–economic benefits to the local population (Honey 2008; Ross and Wall 1999; Epler–
Wood 2002). Kenya is one of the global leaders in tourism and community–based ecotourism,
working with the many local ethnic group to protect the environment and local culture. Many

The most obvious and immediate benefits of ecotourism associated with local communities are
employment opportunities and income generation for the host region. Community in Mara and
Amboseli have businesses linked to tourism. Local communities can benefit from ecotourism
economically if they play a greater participatory role in the tourism process. Economic
empowerment is also related to a community's access to productive resources in an area targeted by
ecotourism( ). When ecotourism focuses on preservation of natural resources, economic livelihoods

Pros And Cons Of Ecotourism
Abstract
Eco–tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the world today. It is a form of natural
resources based tourism focused on experiencing and learning about nature. The term ecotourism
can be well described with the following five criteria: nature conservation, low impact,
sustainability, meaningful community involvement, and environmental education. Environmental
education must be fulfilled to perform ecotourism and is the step towards the process of
understanding the natural ecosystems.
Ecotourism has been growing rapidly over the last decades. Yet, while ecotourism has the potential
to create positive environmental and social impacts, it can unfortunately be as damaging as mass
tourism if not done properly.

Forest and marine habitats are being destroyed and some of the wildlife they contain is being driven
to extinction under the pressures of hunting, logging, agriculture, and fishing. Where areas have
been officially reserved for nature conservation, many developing country governments lack
sufficient funds to manage and protect them. These areas are being destroyed because they are not
fully valued for their role as nature's genetic reservoirs of the world's biological resources. It is the
major threat to the rich biodiversity and natural habitats of the wilds in the jungles.

Essay On Ecotourism
Definition of Ecotourism
'Ecotourism is responsible travel to natural locations that conserves the environment, sustains or if
possible benefits the well–being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education' –as
put by TIES, and now one of my understandings of ecotourism.
Benefits Provided By Organisations/Bodies Regarding Ecotourism
There are many benefits of ecotourism:
Financial gains are made by the local people by bringing in tourists to the area while still keeping
the environment safe and in a good state. A good and stable economy can result from this. Poverty
can be diminished with this influx of tourism and income of money. So too can a fragile
environments be saved if there is ecotourism: protecting various flora, flora and natural structures.
And a major benefit to the local community would be the fact of advising to other parts of society,
politics etc., of the importance of the natural environment to if successful influence greatly on the
state of their homeland.

Introduction
Robinson and Novelli (2005) note 'niche tourism' has become a growing trend occurring in current
years in contrast to what is frequently related to as 'mass tourism'. Cusack and Dixon (2006) add
niche tourism is known to present diversity and provide opportunities with a form of tourism that
aims towards sustainability alongside considering expenditure from tourists. Furthermore, it
suggests a more practical set of strategies that distinguishes tourists. Gartner (1996) demonstrates
how niche tourism consists of distinct interests, culture and/or activity built tourism including small
proportion of tourist in authentic surroundings. Moreover, niche tourism can fall into more specific
categories where cultural, environmental, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is important to note Ecotourism accounts for 6% of the worldwide GDP with an astounding
growing rate of 5% per annum (Nora, 2012).
Page and Dowling (2002) cite the relevance of understanding the different components between
"hard" and "soft" ecotourism. For example hard ecotourism is the desirable type which emphasises a
long term attitude towards nature. Additionally, trips tend to be specialised i.e. undertaken for
ecotourism purposes only, with participants likely to be environmentalists who are dedicated to the
principles of sustainability (Sharpley and Telfer 2002). In contrast soft ecotourism is the
consideration of the short term and favourable with many participants who are tourists with less
appreciation for the environment. Moreover, soft ecotourism occurs in a less natural setting such as
wildlife parks, however is usually accompanied by a high level of service and facility provision
(Weaver and Lawton, 2002).
Orams (1995) highlights the purpose for ecotourism becoming an important aspect in recent years.
He suggests the term can be outlined back to the 1980's, with invention being the outcome of
increased acknowledgment of and response to negative effects as a consequence of mass tourism in
natural spaces. Middleton and Hawkins

Connection Between 'Endangered Pandas And Saving The Panda'
There are many ways to make a connection between "Endangered Pandas" and "Saving the Panda
through Ecotourism." It can be by the central idea, genre, word choices, or even its tone and mood. I
believe that the main connection between the passages is their central idea. The central idea of both
passages is that pandas are getting endangered and how the pandas now live their lives. The main
connection between the sections, "Endangered Pandas" and, "Saving the Panda through Ecotourism"
is that on the two passages the main idea is about how pandas live their lives. In the passage
"Endangered Pandas" it mostly explains how pandas are endangered and how they live their lives.

Taking a Look at Ecotourism
Some of the definitions of ecotourism have proved popular in recent years. Although any number of
principles of ecotourism can be devised, an analysis of definitions such as these indicates that three
dimensions can represent the main essence of the concept. According to this interpretation,
ecotourism is:
nature based,
environmentally educated, and
sustainably managed.
The last dimension is taken to encompass both the natural and cultural environments involved in
supplying the ecotourism experience (Blamey, 2001). Thus, where Ross and Wall (1999) outline five
fundamental functions of ecotourism; namely:
i. protection of natural areas; ii. education; iii. generation of money; iv. quality tourism; and
v. local participation.
The seemingly endless definitional rhetoric has not only caused mass confusion for the operational–
side of the industry, but it has also proved a challenge in terms of identifying legitimacy. In this way,
the major struggle has been a matter of operational implementation and monitoring (Donohoe, 2006;
Ross and Wall, 1999; Russell and Wallace, 2004). The actual application of a given ecotourism
definition then often takes the form of adhering to a corresponding set of principles. Honey (2008)
advocates for the all–or–nothing principle, meaning authentic ecotourism is only present if all of the
predetermined principles are in effect.
Conversely, Orams (1995) views the application of ecotourism on a spectrum with the level of

As We Saw Previously, We Can Divide The Touristic Industry
As we saw previously, we can divide the touristic industry into two major categories, the modern–
day massive tourism and ecotourism. Both forms have a distinctive history, definition, economic
benefits and environmental impact. Although both are growing at lightning speed, especially as our
societies become wealthier and eager to explore the world around them, the biggest dilemma lies on
which, ecotourism or tourism, is a better alternative to pursue to balance economic development and
environmental protection. To find the answer, we need to analyze and compare the main premises
about the two topics.
In regards to history, the idea of being a tourist has been around for centuries. As we saw previously,
humans have dreamed of traveling and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In David Fennell's argument, we can't properly define tourism because we might leave a key
element economic activity out, especially if we understand that just in the category of attractions we
have museums, festivals, sports, cinemas, theme parks and others. The array of options in the
industry of tourism has made it one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world. However,
its massive scope might not make tourism the best environmental alternative.
In the case of ecotourism's definition and scope, it is easier to understand its objective. In Martha
Honey's book, she introduced us to the seven characteristics of real ecotourism, which clearly limit
the definition to activities to natural destinations with an environmental educational purpose and
with the objective of benefiting financially local people and conservation areas. Based on that
definition, ecotourism is a better environmental alternative than regular tourism. However, its
limited scope and smaller scale programs place ecotourism at a disadvantage regarding financial
development.
In terms of economic benefits, the tourism industry has been growing at an unprecedented speed. It
ranks number third in exports category with 7% of the yearly totals. As an industry, it represented
1.5 trillion dollars in 2015, with $1260 billion earned by the receipts in the same year. Tourism

Creating New Services in the Ecotourism Industry
New Service Business Idea
Creating New Services in the Eco Tourism Industry
Executive Summary
There are many possibilities for a new service oriented business. However, one trend that has been
identified is an increased interest in sustainability and people who are becoming more aware of
environmental and social issues. Consumers are increasingly considering factors involving
sustainability into their purchasing decisions. Therefore, it seems reasonable to expect that the niche
referred to as ecotourism will represent one service oriented model that will expand indefinitely.
This growing demographics of consumers that consider environmental and social issues will be
demand innovative and unique opportunities for leisure that are consistent with their perspective.
Marketing to this growing market segment will be a complex task that will require that service
providers act ethically on all fronts. The development of the service strategy must consider all
aspects of both social and environmental impacts of the business and the services they provide.
Furthermore, the promotion of the services must also be consistent with the CSR practices. This
analysis will consider industry environment that would be relevant to a new ecotourism business in
the near future.

responsibility (CSR) will be an increasingly salient factor for consumption of various services in the

The Pros And Cons Of Ecotourism
According to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, tourism is the fastest and biggest
growing industry in the world a sentiment shared also by world economic bodies such as the World
Bank(UNWTO, 2013).. Despite the recent challenges face by the industry such as the economic
recession back in 2008, and the various outbreaks such as SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome) and Bird flu the industry managed to weather out the storm, recovering albeit at a slower
pace. By 2011 international tourism receipts was US$1.03 trillion with international tourist arrivals
surpassing 1 billion tourists globally for the first time in 2012(UNWTO, 2012a). Three years later
international tourist arrivals within the industry grew to 1.135 billion, furthermore international

ensures meeting the tourism needs of the current generation, whilst also safeguarding the tourism
opportunities of future generations. One form of sustainable tourism is Ecotourism which has
become the trend in tourism. Ecotourism is seen a one of the fastest growing sectors within the
tourism industry worldwide with an annual growth rate of 10–15% worldwide (Buckley, 2000).
According to The International Ecotourism Society or (TIES) which describes ecotourism as

Whilst eager tourists strive to see the untouched beauty of the natural world, the increased majority

1.2 Benefits and Drawbacks Particular stakeholders can benefit from ecotourism, whether it be
through raised awareness for the need for conservation or economical revenue for local
communities, tourist companies and governments (Dodds, 2012). [National benefit] With the
growing concern for conservation on a global scale, ecotourism has justified the need for
conservation, resulting in a closer relationship between ecotourism and conservation groups
(Reynolds and Braithwaite, 2001). Income is dependent on a maintained and well managed
ecosystem, having no target species or healthy natural environments for tourists to observe could
collapse the ecotourism industry (Dodds, 2012). Therefore, managing and maintaining a healthy
natural environment inevitably strives towards conservation goals (Reynolds and Braithwaite,
2001), but will additionally make the ecotourism industry aware that additional benefits are possible
from a well conserved protected area (Sekhar, 2003). In addition, keeping target

Lodges and resorts are one of most important sector in ecotourism industry. Most of popular venues
of ecotour are related with natural environment including mountain, ocean, National park, and

Especially tour programs related with National Parks and World Heritage Sites are need to run and

Additionally, Eco rating system is a great criterion in sustainable accommodations which are giving
benefits to local communities, using natural sources, and making energy conservation. The Eco–
rating System will be a guidelines for both of lodging operators and customers. Operators can design
and keep their properties to be more sustainable and eco–friendly as following criteria of Eco–rating
System. Ecotourism consumers can choose more reasonable accommodations as checking Eco–rate.

The International Ecotourism Society
Often times when people think think of the environment they think of fields, lakes, or wild animals.
This, however, is no longer the reality of our world today. Because of human impacts on the
environment, fields have been turned to shopping malls, lakes have been dried up, and
undomesticated creatures are being wiped out by the thousands. One main perpetrator of this
destruction is ecotourism. ecotourism is defined as, "travel to natural areas in ways that conserve the
environment and improve the welfare of local people." ("Significance of Protecting Natural Sites for
Ecotourism Development"). The term "ecotourism" was first used in the 1970's, but became popular
only in 1990 when the International Ecotourism Society (TIES) was founded. The main goals of
ecotourism were to have a means for people to tour natural places, but without having a negative
impact on the environment. ("Ecotourism"). This, however, has not been the case. Preservation of
the environment is no longer the main goal of ecotourism companies, for the great profits have
become many of their main concerns. The positives aspects of ecotourism are not worth the
extinction of endangered animals, the overuse of natural resources, and the disturbance of local
communities.
Ecotourism has had a wide and vast history, spanning all around the globe. The International
Ecotourism Society (TIES) was first founded in 1990 and is the world's longest running ecotourism

Is Ecotourism a Viable Tool Toward Sustainability? Essays
The debate over ecotourism's success as a tool for conservation and development in the developing
world is aggravated by the dispute over what exactly ecotourism is. The International Ecotourism
Society offers a succinct and often cited definition: "responsible travel to natural areas that
conserves the environment and improves the well–being of local people" (TIES). Ecotourism is
often tied to the concept of sustainable development. "Sustainable tourism development meets the
needs of present tourists and host regions while protecting and enhancing opportunities for the
future" (WTOa).

While these areas enjoy a high level of protection, they often displace local people or mean
enforcement of land use that marginalizes historical stewards of the land. However, "it is now
recognized in parts of Africa, for example, that local people should be compensated for the loss of
access to resources they suffer when wildlife parks are created" (Scheyvens 1999: 246).
Private reserves that tourists pay to visit have been successful in terms of conservation in Latin
America and Africa (Kiss 2004; Langholz et al 2000). When Costa Rica imposed steep hikes in park
entrance fees in 1994 there was a shift of visitation to private reserves (Hearne and Salinas 2002). If
these parks choose to register with the government they receive benefits ranging from tax breaks, to
assistance with projects, and expulsion of squatters (Honey 1999). Langholz et al (2000) studied the
economics of 68 private reserves in Costa Rica and found that although they can be profitable this
was not the only motivator for their preservation. Most owners placed a high non–market worth on
the land such as its bequest value. Although the reserves in Costa Rica are not big in size, the quality
of protection they are receiving is very high (Langholz et al 2000). In South Africa the total area of
private reserves now exceeds that of state owned protected areas despite being smaller in average
size (Kiss 2004). These reserves can be particularly successful in the

This was concerning to the government, but unlike the Philippines, the Costa Rican government
agreed with the locals to invest and trust in ecotourism for a decade. After nine years, in 1973, Costa
Rica had broke even. In 1974 they made over ten million. Ever since 1974, profits had come in
exponentially. From 1974 to 1994 over six hundred million was brought in. In 1999 for the first time
in Costa Rican history over one million ecotourists came to Costa Rica. They brought in over one
billion in revenue. Many speculate that the Philippines were on the same track, but the lack of
communication between the government and people proved catastrophic. Costa Rica is known as the
focal point for ecotourism worldwide.
Ecotourism began in Costa Rica in the 1970's. It was very small and began to grow exponentially in
the late 1980's. In 1970 Costa Rica had a GNP, gross national product of 1000 million in 1995 that
number nonuple to 9000 million. Many consider 1978 the first year ecotourism began in Costa Rica.
At that time, Costa Rica had a GNP/capita of 1500. After the ecotourism boom, the number
ballooned to 2000 in 1992. It is evident by the 33% increase in GNP/capita that ecotourism was a
positive influence economically on Costa Rica. Another key problem is that the economic benefit of
ecotourism does not always reach the local community. One of ecotourisms main goals is to help the
local community generate domestic employment and

Taking a Look at Ecotourism
Ecotourism is the activity of going to natural environments and enjoying what it has to offer such as
breath taking scenery and wildlife. Home to approximately four million people ("Costa Rica"),
Costa Rica is known for being one of the most bio–diverse areas in the world which leads to the
popularity of ecotourism in the country. There is a growing demand of eco–tourists and this country
is able to fulfill the market. The developing country has much to offer such as rain forests, natural
parks, and wildlife. Tourists are inclined to visit the protected areas and natural parks. As a result,
these natural resources bring tourists income into the country. Although the government's attempts at
attracting visitors to the ecotourism industry in Costa Rica seem to be successful, it also has its
negative effects on the economy. Ecotourism seems to be a great profit for Costa Rica. The
government puts much emphasis on marketing for ecotourism and takes advantage of maximizing
profits. By having US tourists come into the country, they have been bringing great amounts of
money through their travels. One of the biggest attractions is visiting rain forests. According to
Menkhaus and Lober the estimated the consumer surplus is approximately $1,150, which represents
the average annual per person valuation of the ecotourism value of protected areas in Costa Rica
calculated in a sample of US travelers. They also estimated the annual ecotourism value to Costa

The Pros And Cons Of Ecotourism
Over the past few decades, the tourism industry has grown leaps and bounds in regards to the
amount of traveling and recreational opportunities available. Many of these options now include fine
dining on airlines, unique lodging options worldwide, and other activities. Although the industry
may be evolving, consequently many legal issues arise as a result. These issues become a challenge
for travel officials, as they work together to find effective solutions to settle them. One of the larger
issues at hand in the world today is ecotourism. Ecotourism allows people to visit areas around the

Essentially, "Showing people a rainforest rather than logging... is a good compromise if the forest is
preserved" (qtd. in ). Then there are the negatives associated with ecotourism as a whole. Various
reports such as the damaging of coral reefs by tourists involved in scuba diving activities have
become a prevalent issue, while the building of "eco–lodges" in forests and jungles have resulted in
the continual disturbance of the animals who live in those areas as well as the continuous removal of
natural vegetation which may also contain food supplies for animals. Safari tours that take place in
Africa also have similar results, as many tourists who ride in jeeps contribute to the disturbance of
food sources, such as game that lions depend on for survival. In Africa, many indigenous peoples
such as the Masai in Kenya have lost their land to the ecotourism industry, and have been forced to
move elsewhere. Environmentalists argue that, "Unwittingly, the tourists are destroying the culture
that they are paying to preserve. Ecotourism seeks to go to the remotest places. These places are
often not well policed. There is nothing stopping people taking money from tourists as well as
pursuing environmentally unfriendly activities" (qtd. in

Analysis Of David Weaver 's Ecotourism
David Weaver is a professor at Griffith University on the Gold Coast in Australia. He has a Ph.D. in
Geography and has over 30 years of experience regarding tourism – and his specialities are within
the areas of ecotourism, sustainable tourism and destination management. He has been both teaching
and researching during his 30 years in the field, and also published academic books and other
research materials. Some of his books are currently used in tourism courses at universities
worldwide. There is a course called Globally Responsible Tourism at the Norwegian School of
Hotel Management in Stavanger, which is mandatory for students studying a bachelor degree in
tourism management. In this course Professor Weaver's ecotourism book is used as the textbook,
and in light of this course we became interested in sustainability and ecotourism in the first place.
Luckily, he was teaching at the university we did our exchange semester at, and due to that we got
the opportunity to interview him in person for this bachelor thesis. As already mentioned, the
research question for this bachelor thesis is about how GBR can be seen as a sustainable destination.
To figure this out, it is important to understand how tourism or visitors affect the GBR. During the
interview with Weaver, he expresses himself about climate change, chemical waste, tourism
impacts, global warming, etc. According to Weaver, tourism impacts includes that the good
outcomes overwhelmed the negative impacts in GBR.

What Is Ecotourism
What is ecotourism? Normally, natural travel can be called as ecotourism. Eco came from the Greek
words called 'OIKOS', it means the habitat and it is an abbreviation of the words 'ecology'. This
word actually came from the scientific study of the relationship of living organisms to each other
and their surroundings. Therefore, in this point of view, ecotourism means ecological tourism;
whereby ecological has both of the social content and environmental. According to Page & Dowling
(2002), since most of the definition of ecotourism have been explained, it is not so much as a word
but a philosophy and a commitment which evolved from environmental awareness of 1960s, there

What Is The Importance Of Tourism And The Environment
Moreover, tourism and the environment are balancing sectors in terms of vision and goals. The
environment is the right climate for sustainable tourism development, and sustainable tourism
focuses on environmental planning. Perhaps the most important element on which eco–tourism is
based is not to disturb the ecological balance resulting from human actions, which are represented
by the behavior of tourists in the case of ecotourism and the pollution it may cause. In addition,
natural areas form the basis for ecotourism from marine tourism and land tourism, and recent studies
have shown that eco–tourism generates direct financial resources. What is more, the main objective
of ecotourism is to promote and improve the standards of living of the local community (Kuhdairi,
2012)
7. The Importance of Ecotourism
Eco–tourism has an importance that it helps to achieve different importance. One is keeping
environmental balance and protecting the natural life of land, sea and air from pollution. Therefore,
it is way to protect environment. Another is that sets behavioral controls in the use of materials or
consumption in order to maintain public health and safety, and renew resources. Another importance
is that ecotourism provides easy, simple life away from discomfort, anxiety and stress by preventing
noise and gaseous emissions that affect human efficiency because tourists go to clean and
comfortable areas. Moreover, there is an economic importance for eco–tourism as it brings

Ecotourism And Mitigation Of Carbon Emissions : Transport...
Ecotourism and mitigation in carbon emissions: transport solutions
Sara Campana,
Tuesday 30 September 2014
In the last decade the increase in carbon emissions has become one of the main problems and their
reduction one of the fundamental goals, which the global community shall achieve in the following
years.
Most of the activities correlated to the tourism demand energy directly in the form of fossil fuels or
indirectly in the form of electricity. The consumption of energy raises the emission of greenhouse
gases, mainly carbon dioxide.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most important greenhouse gas, accounting for an estimated 60% of the
global warming caused by greenhouse gases.
It is well known that several sectors are mutually responsible in the release of CO2 within different
environmental compartments.
Have you never thought that among these sectors the tourism industry plays a key role in facing the
challenges of climate change?
The System of National Accounts does not include the tourism as a traditional sector; consequently
it is very rare that countries produce appropriate national statistics on the energy demand or
emissions clearly resulting from tourism. Just recently researchers started to study energy
consumption by tourist activities and the resulting greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to the
anthropogenic component of global warming.
Concerning this issue, one of the most recent contributions focussed on emissions, impacts,
adaptation and mitigation

Ecotourism In Malaysia

  • 1. Ecotourism in Malaysia G. DEVELOPMENT OF ECOTOURISM IN MALAYSIA –Mohd Director, Nawayai Zoo Park Yasak Melaka Malaysia Department of Wildlife and National 1. Historical Background Until the 1970s, tourism was not regarded as an important economic activity in Malaysia. The Tourism Development Corporation of Malaysia (TDC) was set up in 1972, with the responsibility to act as a development authority, but the sector was given a low priority. Dut partly to limited financial allocations, TDC faced constraints in the effective performance of its catalytic role. As a result, Malaysia remained a relatively unknown destination, while other countries in the region such asSingapore, Thailand and Indonesia built on their established reputations as mass tourism ... The meaning and use of the term are plagued by disagreements, confusion, and propaganda (Weaver, 1999).The term ecotourism merged in the late 1980s as a direct 4 result of the world's acknowledgement and reaction to sustainable practices and global ecological practice (D. Dianatis, 1999). Ecotourism was first defined as "travelling to relatively undisturbed or uncontaminated natural areas with the specific objective of studying, admiring, and enjoying the scenery and its wild plants and animals, as well as existing cultural manifestation (both past and present) found in these areas. • 11. Ecotourism in South American Countries Essay Ecotourism in South American Countries Synopsis: We are living in a world that tends to put developed nations against indigenous peoples. Foreign developers seeking cheap labor and natural resources on untouched lands are exploiting cultures that have survived for centuries on their own. South America is a continent that possesses rich indigenous culture that is still relatively untouched by outsiders. Americans have the ability to preserve that heritage through organized efforts to encourage certain types of visitors to indigenous areas to create an economy that will take the place of potential mining, logging, and ranching enterprises. That economy is ecotourism. The following paper displays some of the pros and cons of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To act as a means of improving the status of these poor countries, the idea of Ecotourism was developed. Though the idea of Ecotourism was one with good intentions, the local people in the countries where Ecotourism has been in effect are not gaining much at all. History of Ecotourism: The idea that led to Ecotourism emerged in the late sixties when people like Oswaldo Muñoz, now president of the Ecuadorian Ecotourism Association, started guiding tourists around their countries to view natural wonders. Many companies began to set up lodging near parks and reserves and even began to develop tours of those areas. The vision of showing off exotic plants, animals and the overall natural beauty of countries like Ecuador also attracted them. Yet early on, this did little to help the local economies. It actually contributed to other problems: In Ecuador, half of the country's rain forest disappeared, and environmental groups and other organizations promoting ecotourism flocked to places where endangered species, including many indigenous populations, lived. But with the growing environmental awareness of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Ecotourism vs Volunteer Tourism The discussion on ecotourism and its essence has led to over eighty different definitions of the topic (Fennell, 2008). However, one of the most used and comprehensive definitions is reported by Weaver (ibidem). It describes ecotourism as "a form of tourism that fosters" awareness, education and enjoyment of the natural environment and the local values in a sustainable way (Weaver, 2001a:15). Hence, ecotourism, while thriving for profitability, aims to promote education and cultural awareness of destinations without compromising their ecosystems. Eco–tourists demand for more authentic and meaningful forms of travel and; according to Orams (1996) (in Weaver, 2001a), they can be classified in two different categories: hard and soft ones. The hard eco–tourists believe in "radical" self–commitment with their destination, in order to ameliorate the natural environment (give back something) through "not–mediated" (Weaver, 2001b:106), challenging physical activities immersed in the site's nature (ibidem). However, the soft visitors have shallower levels of commitment to the environment than hard eco–tourists. Indeed, while hard eco–visitors tend to organise independently (where high competence and time availability are required and low level of services expected on–site), soft ones rely on eco–tour–operators to organise less physically demanding tours (tab. 1.1a) (ibidem). Nevertheless, further distinctions can be created between these two categories depending on the antagonism ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. The Concept Of Ecotourism And Its Effects On The Environment The concept of Ecotourism ( a concept pioneered during the early 1970's to combat the negative impacts of mass tourism) is defined as "environmentally conscious, enlightening travel, to relatively undisturbed natural areas in order to enjoy and appreciate nature, while promoting local environmental conservation...and providing local socio–economic benefits through the participation of the local communities". Responsible ecotourism programs are those that (1) minimize negative aspects of mass tourism on the environment, (2) contributes to environmental preservation efforts, (3) is economically beneficial for the local population and, (4) educates the tourist themselves. Ecotourism today is one of the tourism industry 's fastest growing subsector, with an estimated global annual growth of 15–19%. With this much money involved, governments as well as, tourism corporations heavily promote ecotourism programs, with their claims of environmental and social sensitivity but, there exist well founded concerns on its actual environmental impact, and whether it is viable as a solution to the world 's environmental problems. In this paper we will try to dissect the supposed benefits brought by ecotourism and provide an alternative and more viable solution. We will start by attacking the claim (1) which is that ecotourism minimizes the negative aspects of mass tourism. Due to the fact that environmental regulations in areas where ecotourism programs are often badly implemented or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Impacts And Benefits Of Ecotourism To Costa Rica The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impacts and benefits of ecotourism to Costa Rica in the perspective of the environment, local community and development of tourism sustainability; the ways ecotourism creates awareness of the importance of natural and cultural conservation; and the prospective benefits and risks of ecotourism to Costa Rica in term of the local community, the biodiversity and the environment. 2.0 The Impacts and Benefits of Ecotourism to Costa Rica As tourism is clearly going mainstream in Costa Rica currently, it must have leave an impacts to the country, be it an advantages or disadvantages to the country. 2.1 Protection of Nature As mentioned earlier, in 1983, almost half of the woodland was cut down. But when Costa Rica began the industry of ecotourism and build more national parks and wildlife parks, the annual deforestation rate had dropped. In 1998 the deforestation rate had dropped to zero, and currently, the forest cover has increased to more than 50%, which doubled from 1983 (Blasiak 2011). The expansion of the protected area of the country to 30% had saved many areas from being used for logging, farming or mining, which will cause a lot of flora and fauna to extinct, given that Costa Rica is the home to estimated more than 850 of bird ... Ecotourism in the Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica and Tanzania When it comes to the topic of ecotourism, most of us will readily agree that it is a less harmful alternative to mass–tourism and that it promotes responsible and low–impact travel to areas where flora, fauna and cultural heritage are the primary drawing power. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of what the impact of ecotourism actually is and what its long– term consequences are. Whereas some are convinced that ecotourism provides the basis for sustainable development, particularly in places that suffer from exploitation and excessive resources' usage, and that could only improve the general conditions of the local people, others maintain that we are still far from true ecotourism, for many are those in the ... Nonetheless, since an overwhelming majority of the industry is owned and managed by foreign operators, the social and economic contribution to the Galapagos Islands are minimal; "[w]hile foreign visitors outnumber domestic tourists almost four to one, [...] just 15.1 percent of the foreign expenditures stayed in the Galapagos local economy, compared to 95.2 percent of the money spent by Ecuadorians" (130–1). Both mass tourism and ecotourism can arguably provide an excellent opportunity for development, but their negative impact is sure to be seen, and could potentially outweigh the benefits that they have brought. Another country that has significantly embraced ecotourism is Costa Rica. A tiny Central American country located just a few hours' flight from the United States, Costa Rica rapidly transformed to a green destination, and in 1992 the U.S. Adventure Travel Society declared Costa Rica "the number one ecotourism destination in the world" (160). Its success finds its root in a mix of positive conditions that most of the other ecotourism sites lack, varying from a stable democracy to the abolition of the army, and including one of the highest standards of ... Ecotourism, Tourism, and Development in Mexico Essay Ecotourism, Tourism, and Development in Mexico "The issue of growth in the travel industry – how much, how fast, what kind – is crucial to the future of communities, local lifestyles and cultures, and the natural environment. There are a variety of instabilities and inequities associated with the expansion of tourism. If the social costs of infinite growth (human consequences of ecological pollution, centralized concentration of power, inequitable income distribution) are as high as they appear to be, our current social systems cannot support such growth indefinitely. Tourism remains a passive luxury for thousands of travelers. This must change" (Rethinking Tourism and Ecotravel by Deborah McLaren, 1998, p. 6). In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We will examine the problems and what can be done to increase environmentally ethical (eco)tourism, which could be considered tourism that focuses on experiencing and learning about the nonhuman and human aspects of a place while critically examining the effects of one's individual actions and the combined effects of one's role as part of a group. Although all of these issues at hand are important, the issue that I will be focusing on is the massive environmental degradation and how it has been affected by the increases in Buddhist religious freedom and ecotourism. In 1949, China's natural forests were nationalized and private forests were collectivized, this gave state enterprises control over the forests. The main problem that came out of this was that these enterprises promoted leadership with higher profits from timber production. This caused managers of companies to try to increase their profits from timber production but wouldn't use any of those profits for replanting timber resources because they had no incentive to. This led to China's annual forest volume harvested to be greater than the growth in forest volume, which directly connects to deforestation. "China had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They are starting to try to change the things that they do to lower the harm they are doing to the environment. They are minimizing the carbon footprint that they are putting on the Earth. There are many different activities you can do that will not hurt the environment. (15 Marks) Sustainable Tourism is essentially an industry committed to making a low impact on the natural environment and local culture, while helping to generate income and employment for local people. As Global economists forecast continuing international tourism growth, this continuous growth will place great stress on remaining biologically diverse habitats and indigenous cultures, which are often used to support mass tourism. This is especially the case here as tourism has destroyed farming and agricultural labour which used to be the main source of income which means Majorca has no other form of income to fall back on if tourism was to decrease in the area. Moreover, one of the main issues that sustainable tourism tries to embrace is having a low impact on tourism but many countries who undertake in mass tourism have failed to properly take this into account. For example, tourism around the Great Barrier Reef in Australia is the largest commercial activity there and accounts for 87% of the reefs economic output. However, this tourism has created pollution through waste disposal, pollution from boats etc. This easily damages the Coral reef which thus affects the species dependent on them. As science shows the effects of climate change, and the detriments of a Western consumerist culture on the environment, many people are shifting towards a more green, eco– friendly philosophy. This shift of being conscious of the environment, has prompted some people and companies to make honest changes to preserve and help the environment. This starting shift in society of being eco–friendly has prompted many businesses to jump on this trend, as it looks better to consumers and often saves or makes the companies money. Despite, this new societal shift toward a green paradigm, many parts of society want to hold onto to dominant western ideals of controlling and using the environment's resources to the advantage of humans. Society is currently wrestling, with whether to follow the ideas of the dominant western paradigm, or the newer green paradigm. Many parts of society are shifting towards a green paradigm, but is this for genuine environmental reasons, or to make money and products, that continue to feed into the consumerism ideals of the old dominant western paradigm? Page and Dowling (2002) cite the relevance of understanding the different components between "hard" and "soft" ecotourism. For example hard ecotourism is the desirable type which emphasises a long term attitude towards nature. Additionally, trips tend to be specialised i.e. undertaken for ecotourism purposes only, with participants likely to be environmentalists who are dedicated to the principles of sustainability (Sharpley and Telfer 2002). In contrast soft ecotourism is the consideration of the short term and favourable with many participants who are tourists with less appreciation for the environment. Moreover, soft ecotourism occurs in a less natural setting such as wildlife parks, however is usually accompanied by a high level of service and facility provision (Weaver and Lawton, 2002). Orams (1995) highlights the purpose for ecotourism becoming an important aspect in recent years. • 95. Taking a Look at Ecotourism Some of the definitions of ecotourism have proved popular in recent years. Although any number of principles of ecotourism can be devised, an analysis of definitions such as these indicates that three dimensions can represent the main essence of the concept. According to this interpretation, ecotourism is: nature based, environmentally educated, and sustainably managed. The last dimension is taken to encompass both the natural and cultural environments involved in supplying the ecotourism experience (Blamey, 2001). Thus, where Ross and Wall (1999) outline five fundamental functions of ecotourism; namely: i. protection of natural areas; ii. education; iii. generation of money; iv. quality tourism; and v. local participation. The seemingly endless definitional rhetoric has not only caused mass confusion for the operational– side of the industry, but it has also proved a challenge in terms of identifying legitimacy. In this way, the major struggle has been a matter of operational implementation and monitoring (Donohoe, 2006; Ross and Wall, 1999; Russell and Wallace, 2004). The actual application of a given ecotourism definition then often takes the form of adhering to a corresponding set of principles. Honey (2008) advocates for the all–or–nothing principle, meaning authentic ecotourism is only present if all of the predetermined principles are in effect. As We Saw Previously, We Can Divide The Touristic Industry As we saw previously, we can divide the touristic industry into two major categories, the modern– day massive tourism and ecotourism. Both forms have a distinctive history, definition, economic benefits and environmental impact. Although both are growing at lightning speed, especially as our societies become wealthier and eager to explore the world around them, the biggest dilemma lies on which, ecotourism or tourism, is a better alternative to pursue to balance economic development and environmental protection. To find the answer, we need to analyze and compare the main premises about the two topics. In regards to history, the idea of being a tourist has been around for centuries. As we saw previously, humans have dreamed of traveling and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In David Fennell's argument, we can't properly define tourism because we might leave a key element economic activity out, especially if we understand that just in the category of attractions we have museums, festivals, sports, cinemas, theme parks and others. The array of options in the industry of tourism has made it one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world. However, its massive scope might not make tourism the best environmental alternative. In the case of ecotourism's definition and scope, it is easier to understand its objective. In Martha Honey's book, she introduced us to the seven characteristics of real ecotourism, which clearly limit the definition to activities to natural destinations with an environmental educational purpose and with the objective of benefiting financially local people and conservation areas. Based on that definition, ecotourism is a better environmental alternative than regular tourism. However, its limited scope and smaller scale programs place ecotourism at a disadvantage regarding financial development. In terms of economic benefits, the tourism industry has been growing at an unprecedented speed. It ranks number third in exports category with 7% of the yearly totals. As an industry, it represented 1.5 trillion dollars in 2015, with $1260 billion earned by the receipts in the same year. Tourism provided with 109 million jobs worldwide in 2016. As it ... [National benefit] With the growing concern for conservation on a global scale, ecotourism has justified the need for conservation, resulting in a closer relationship between ecotourism and conservation groups (Reynolds and Braithwaite, 2001). Income is dependent on a maintained and well managed ecosystem, having no target species or healthy natural environments for tourists to observe could collapse the ecotourism industry (Dodds, 2012). • 123. The International Ecotourism Society Often times when people think think of the environment they think of fields, lakes, or wild animals. This, however, is no longer the reality of our world today. Because of human impacts on the environment, fields have been turned to shopping malls, lakes have been dried up, and undomesticated creatures are being wiped out by the thousands. One main perpetrator of this destruction is ecotourism. ecotourism is defined as, "travel to natural areas in ways that conserve the environment and improve the welfare of local people." ("Significance of Protecting Natural Sites for Ecotourism Development"). The term "ecotourism" was first used in the 1970's, but became popular only in 1990 when the International Ecotourism Society (TIES) was founded. The main goals of ecotourism were to have a means for people to tour natural places, but without having a negative impact on the environment. ("Ecotourism"). This, however, has not been the case. Preservation of the environment is no longer the main goal of ecotourism companies, for the great profits have become many of their main concerns. The positives aspects of ecotourism are not worth the extinction of endangered animals, the overuse of natural resources, and the disturbance of local communities. Ecotourism has had a wide and vast history, spanning all around the globe. The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) was first founded in 1990 and is the world's longest running ecotourism company. Essays The debate over ecotourism's success as a tool for conservation and development in the developing world is aggravated by the dispute over what exactly ecotourism is. The International Ecotourism Society offers a succinct and often cited definition: "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well–being of local people" (TIES). Ecotourism is often tied to the concept of sustainable development. "Sustainable tourism development meets the needs of present tourists and host regions while protecting and enhancing opportunities for the future" (WTOa). As the notion of ecotourism gained popularity, Boo (1990) was one of the first to express reservations over ecotourism's potential. She warned that it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While these areas enjoy a high level of protection, they often displace local people or mean enforcement of land use that marginalizes historical stewards of the land. However, "it is now recognized in parts of Africa, for example, that local people should be compensated for the loss of access to resources they suffer when wildlife parks are created" (Scheyvens 1999: 246). Private reserves that tourists pay to visit have been successful in terms of conservation in Latin America and Africa (Kiss 2004; Langholz et al 2000). When Costa Rica imposed steep hikes in park entrance fees in 1994 there was a shift of visitation to private reserves (Hearne and Salinas 2002). If these parks choose to register with the government they receive benefits ranging from tax breaks, to assistance with projects, and expulsion of squatters (Honey 1999). Langholz et al (2000) studied the economics of 68 private reserves in Costa Rica and found that although they can be profitable this was not the only motivator for their preservation. Most owners placed a high non–market worth on the land such as its bequest value. Although the reserves in Costa Rica are not big in size, the quality of protection they are receiving is very high (Langholz et al 2000). In South Africa the total area of private reserves now exceeds that of state owned protected areas despite being smaller in average size (Kiss 2004). Ecotourism is defined as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well–being of local people." Economical Impact Ecotourism plays a vital role in a nations economy. Many factors entail whether a country can be successful economically. This was concerning to the government, but unlike the Philippines, the Costa Rican government agreed with the locals to invest and trust in ecotourism for a decade. After nine years, in 1973, Costa Rica had broke even. In 1974 they made over ten million. Ever since 1974, profits had come in exponentially. From 1974 to 1994 over six hundred million was brought in. In 1999 for the first time in Costa Rican history over one million ecotourists came to Costa Rica. They brought in over one billion in revenue. Many speculate that the Philippines were on the same track, but the lack of communication between the government and people proved catastrophic. Costa Rica is known as the focal point for ecotourism worldwide. Ecotourism began in Costa Rica in the 1970's. It was very small and began to grow exponentially in the late 1980's. In 1970 Costa Rica had a GNP, gross national product of 1000 million in 1995 that number nonuple to 9000 million. Many consider 1978 the first year ecotourism began in Costa Rica. At that time, Costa Rica had a GNP/capita of 1500. After the ecotourism boom, the number ballooned to 2000 in 1992. It is evident by the 33% increase in GNP/capita that ecotourism was a positive influence economically on Costa Rica. Another key problem is that the economic benefit of ecotourism does not always reach the local community. Home to approximately four million people ("Costa Rica"), Costa Rica is known for being one of the most bio–diverse areas in the world which leads to the popularity of ecotourism in the country. There is a growing demand of eco–tourists and this country is able to fulfill the market. The developing country has much to offer such as rain forests, natural parks, and wildlife. Tourists are inclined to visit the protected areas and natural parks. As a result, these natural resources bring tourists income into the country. Although the government's attempts at attracting visitors to the ecotourism industry in Costa Rica seem to be successful, it also has its negative effects on the economy. Ecotourism seems to be a great profit for Costa Rica. The government puts much emphasis on marketing for ecotourism and takes advantage of maximizing profits. By having US tourists come into the country, they have been bringing great amounts of money through their travels. One of the biggest attractions is visiting rain forests. According to Menkhaus and Lober the estimated the consumer surplus is approximately $1,150, which represents the average annual per person valuation of the ecotourism value of protected areas in Costa Rica calculated in a sample of US travelers. Then there are the negatives associated with ecotourism as a whole. Various reports such as the damaging of coral reefs by tourists involved in scuba diving activities have become a prevalent issue, while the building of "eco–lodges" in forests and jungles have resulted in the continual disturbance of the animals who live in those areas as well as the continuous removal of natural vegetation which may also contain food supplies for animals. Safari tours that take place in Africa also have similar results, as many tourists who ride in jeeps contribute to the disturbance of food sources, such as game that lions depend on for survival. In Africa, many indigenous peoples such as the Masai in Kenya have lost their land to the ecotourism industry, and have been forced to move elsewhere. Environmentalists argue that, "Unwittingly, the tourists are destroying the culture that they are paying to preserve. Ecotourism seeks to go to the remotest places. Eco came from the Greek words called 'OIKOS', it means the habitat and it is an abbreviation of the words 'ecology'. This word actually came from the scientific study of the relationship of living organisms to each other and their surroundings. Therefore, in this point of view, ecotourism means ecological tourism; whereby ecological has both of the social content and environmental. According to Page & Dowling (2002), since most of the definition of ecotourism have been explained, it is not so much as a word but a philosophy and a commitment which evolved from environmental awareness of 1960s, there have been various flow of thoughts about ecotourism. The environment is the right climate for sustainable tourism development, and sustainable tourism focuses on environmental planning. Perhaps the most important element on which eco–tourism is based is not to disturb the ecological balance resulting from human actions, which are represented by the behavior of tourists in the case of ecotourism and the pollution it may cause. In addition, natural areas form the basis for ecotourism from marine tourism and land tourism, and recent studies have shown that eco–tourism generates direct financial resources. Ecotourism and mitigation in carbon emissions: transport solutions Sara Campana, Tuesday 30 September 2014 In the last decade the increase in carbon emissions has become one of the main problems and their reduction one of the fundamental goals, which the global community shall achieve in the following years. Most of the activities correlated to the tourism demand energy directly in the form of fossil fuels or indirectly in the form of electricity. The consumption of energy raises the emission of greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most important greenhouse gas, accounting for an estimated 60% of the global warming caused by greenhouse gases. It is well known that several sectors are mutually responsible in the release of CO2 within different environmental compartments. Have you never thought that among these sectors the tourism industry plays a key role in facing the challenges of climate change? The System of National Accounts does not include the tourism as a traditional sector; consequently it is very rare that countries produce appropriate national statistics on the energy demand or emissions clearly resulting from tourism. Just recently researchers started to study energy consumption by tourist activities and the resulting greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to the anthropogenic component of global warming.
