The Y2k Hysteria By Richard Landes
This phrase and the belief that the world was formed in 6 days with a 7th for rest, gave the early
Christians a view that the world would last for 6000 years. According to scriptures the world had a
beginning, it had a "now" in which they were living and a promised end. This end was proclaimed in
the Olivet discourse (Matthew 24, Luke 21, Mark 13), but with warnings that none on Earth would
know when. The Y2K hysteria caused many scholar to wonder how the millennial dates past where
thought of by those that lived in that time.
This essay is a discussion on whether merging of dates with the idea of six millennia (1000 year)
periods was just an intellectual exercise or directly gave rise to apocalyptic thought. Richard Landes'

This was part of the problem chronologists had in merging dates systems.
Landes' diagram showing the various chronological systems, that highlights when they hit the 6th
Millennium. Note: the vertical dotted lines, of the changing a date system to avert the "dangerous"
millennium. From this it seems obvious that the church fathers of Augustine and later Boniface must
have made the decision to change dating to avoid the Millennium fever. But that is not quite the full
picture. It does not consider the intervening centuries of learning, translation and scholarship
creating better methods of calculations. Figure 1 – chronographical shifts and apocalyptic target
dates. (illustration by Richard Landes.)
The study of chronology has been a pursuit of many a scholar over the ages. We should note that it
was not just early Christians who were interested in this. Rabbi Yossi ben Halafta, a 2nd century
scholar, calculated the beginning date of the Hebrew calendar from when Adam & Eve were created
(Year 1 of Jewish calendar) which (adjusted for modern calendar) was October 7, 3761BC. . The old
Testament part of the Bible was a collection of the religious writings from Jewish Torah, giving a
chronology from Genesis to well before the Coming of Jesus. Various

Short Story : The 5th Wave
About 1 year ago, I lost all of my strength. I couldn't walk. I couldn't stand. Ugh! I couldn't even lift
my head to look up without help. Instead of playing and enjoying outside in the summer with my
siblings, I had to stay inside and lay down on my couch 24/7. I had to use a wheelchair to move
around. Although this was a hard time in my life, I learned to adapt, or adjust, to my new life, just
like the characters in the story "The Sniper", and the novel The 5th Wave. Cassie Sullivan is a very
adaptable, tough girl, though at first sight people may not think that. In the story The 5th Wave,
Cassie is just a regular, shy, high school girl. That all changed when an alien UFO arrived on earth,
bringing 5 waves of different challenges to kill off the human race. Wave 1: "Lights Out". The aliens
sent an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP to knock out every electronic device. Cars, lights, medical
equipment, none of these devices worked. Wave 2: "Surf's Up". The aliens dropped a giant metal rod
on one of the rifts in the tectonic plates, causing massive tsunamis all around the world, taking out
anything that was near the sea. Wave 3: "Pestilence". Birds all around the world transmitted a
disease to humans, worse than the Black Plague, ending the lives of 7 billion people. Wave 4:
"Silencer".The aliens disguised themselves as humans and sniped all of the humans they saw
without making a noise. However, a few people have managed to survive. Cassie Sullivan is one of

Rituals Are An Important Aspect Of Human Interaction And...
Rituals are an important aspect of human interaction and society, and they provide a link and
support to those around us. Rituals make us self–aware of our emotional state and provide spiritual
refuge when we need it. They are the vessel through which we can become closer to our gods or
deities; they are sanctuaries in time of need, distractions from the overwhelming feeling of dealing
with life and its troubles, they are the pillars of faith that keep us intact. Without them, we would be
a very distant and disconnected society. The ritual I have chosen to discuss is one that particularly
caught my attention, including the many variations of it as well–the Buddhist Fire Ritual, or Homa
(goma). The purpose of this ritual is to get rid of negative energies and to cleanse the mind and
spirit, and involves the beating of drums, chanting of mantras, and of course, fire. Variations of this
ritual depend on the occasion, but they all include the burning of the fire, invoking higher powers,
and reciting said mantras. As part of my research on this ritual, I looked up a YouTube video on it
and found it to be very interesting. The one I watched of this ritual being performed took place in a
small, dimly–lit room, mainly lit up with ceremonial candles, holding few people and two Buddhist
priests. One was chanting the mantras, beating a Taiko drum, and shaking bells while the other did
the work with the fire and the main aspect of the ritual. After distributing what was

2. Throughput is defined as
Throughput=Min {Input rate, Process capacity, Demand rate}
Input Rate = 3000 bbls/hr
Input Rate and Demand Rate > Process Capacity
Throughput =Min {Process Capacity}
It is evident from the process flowchart that the capacity of the drying unit is minimum at 450 and
maximum at 600 bbls/hr. However, this does not apply to dry berries.
Both dry and wet berries go through the separation process with a capacity of 1200 bbls/hr. Since
70% of the berries are wet, the capacity for separation is recalculated as
Separation capacity for wet berries = 70% of 1200 bbls/hr = 840 bbls/hr
Separation capacity for dry berries = 30% of 1200 bbls/hr = 360 bbls/hr

Start time for processing is 11 AM.
Arrival time of berries = 7 AM.
Time for storage in the dumper and bins = 4 hours
Total number of berries = 1500*4 = 6000 bbls
Total number of wet berries = 70% of 6000 = 4200 bbls
Total number of dry berries = 30% of 6000 = 1800 bbls

Excess berries in bins start getting processed at (600–450) =150 bbls/hr
Arrival of berries stops at 7 PM.
Excess dry berries remaining after 7 PM = 1800 – 8*150 = 600 bbls.

Greek Intellectual Values
Throughout the time period of 600 BCE to 600 CE, many societies learned to develop innovative
ways of living and flourishing. Many of the views on society and the way they believed a society
should be run overall, impacted the way civilizations are run today. Some of the civilizations that
helped to develop this were Greece, Rome, the Maya, and Alexander the Great's Empire. This age
helped develop different political, cultural and intellectual values. Many of these developments
began in Athens, but other city–states also played an important role. One of the political values
Greek civilizations developed is the use of philosophy in the form of humanism. In addition, there
cultural values consisted of try to portray themselves to the gods to seem worthy. Lastly, the Greek's

art, and the understanding of the world around them.
While these events in Greece occurred a war broke out between Greece and Persia known as the
Persian War. The war occurred in 5th century BCE and had a long lasting effect on Greece. In 599
BCE the Persians conquered a group of people that inhabited Asia Minor called Ionian Greeks.

Critical Analysis of The 5th Wave Essay
In a world where a mysterious alien race has besieged Earth– survival is the ultimate goal. 95% of
the world's population was not able to achieve this goal; Cassie Sullivan is one of the "lucky" ones.
The "others,"as the humans call them, set up five waves to eradicate the human race. Surviving the
first wave wasn't too difficult, it was, after all, just an EMP strike. The second wave really shook the
world, literally. The aliens set the Earth's tectonic plates in motion, causing thousands of off–the–
chart earthquakes. The tsunamis that spurred from these quakes were detrimental; killing about 50
percent of the world's overall population. The third wave proved to be the most emotionally
devastating. A gruesome plague– created by the aliens ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Cassie's mission is to escape the aliens and save her brother; Ben Parish's is strikingly similar.
Benjamin, age 17, was captain of the varsity football team, a prodigy in all things school, and he had
a smile that could charm anyone. But brilliance and charm alone can not get him out of his current
situation; sergeant and squad leader of a military unit assigned to eliminating alien infected persons.
While in training at the military's Camp Haven, Ben meets a very young boy named Sammy.
Sammy is the same age as Ben's now dead sister, five years old. He swore to himself that he would
not let anyone hurt Sam, like the "others" murdered his little sister. No matter what the stakes,
Benjamin will try to help Sam escape the alien compound that is Camp Haven.
Books that get published nowadays are usually intended for a specific audience. This often leads to a

There have been more recent rat infestations over the years. In the articles (sources) numbers 1, 2,
and 3 they explain rat infestations exploding in several places. These are the three thing to look for
when their is a rat infestation where are they occurring, the dangers to humankind, and how to
eradicate them. First, rat infestations are occurring in places around the world. According to Source
1, John Davison explains, "Recent cold weather and flooding is believed to have led the disease–
carrying rodents to shelter indoors. And the situation is only going to get worse because of the
increase in the rat population thanks to a succession of milder winters, according to pest

the rat population to go up (Gill,Source 2). This is revealing the fact that too many seeds are causing
the rats to come to Indian villages. In the article Jerry Falke stated, "Last fall was an exceptionally

Fate 's Punishment For Athens
Fate's Punishment for Athens The Landmark Thucydides is a history book on the Peloponnesian War
written by an Athenian historian and general named Thucydides. Throughout the book, Thucydides
recounts the war and tells of the many actions of his mother land Athens. In several of his
descriptions Athens could be viewed as arrogant especially towards their accomplishments in war.
He also tells of a terrible crime that Athens commits that could be described as genocide.
Thucydides also describes several simpleminded mistakes that were made that crippled Athens in
the end and could have been prevented with more through thinking. Despite being powerful and
dominant on the battlefield the Athenians suffer crippling defeat in the end. The arrogance, cruelty,
and foolishness that Athens displayed brought fate down on Athens and caused their defeat in the
Peloponnesian War. Athens displayed their arrogance multiple times throughout the war. During a
battle at Pylos Sparta attempted to make peace with Athens through a truce. When offered the truce,
Athens rejects it thinking that "The treaty would be ready for them whenever they chose to make it".
(Landmark Thucydides. Book 4; 4.21, Pg.425). Athens had the audacity to think that Sparta would
just wait for them to decide when they were done fighting which made them seem obnoxiously
proud. Another time where Athens shows how arrogant they are occurs before the conference with
the colony of Melos. Thucydides talks of the colony

Pythagoras And Ancient Athenian Culture
Pythagoras and Ancient Athenian Culture
The ancient Greeks did not always possess the deeply creative and accepting culture imagined by
society today. They started off as very ritualistic and stubbornly polytheistic, rejecting those who
denied the gods and ostracising people who seemed unpious. While some of these traits never
disappeared, others became more like the Greeks we recognize today starting in the fifth century
BCE. It was around this time that Pythagoras lived and taught. Today we remember him as the
founder of much of modern mathematics, but at the time he was also the founder of a religious and
philosophical sect that carried on for centuries after his death. It can be argued that his teachings,

Pythagoras was not only a mathematician; in fact it is sometimes doubted whether the math we
attribute to him was actually his own work or simply reprocessing of the work of others. He was
instead generally seen as a religious figure and was the leader of what is sometimes referred to as a
"cult." He was described as "part philosopher, part priest, and part conjuror" and had a lot of bearing
in both the religious and scientific views of his time. He believed that religion and science were
indeed one and the same, with math serving as a pathway for discovering the workings of the
universe. This belief was controversial, and many philosophers referred to Pythagoras sarcastically,
but it was a belief that would continue onward throughout Greek history in the minds of other
philosophers, such as Aristotle. It was the basis for the interest in mathematics and astronomy,
because he taught that by learning the movement of the heavenly bodies, or planets, humans would
be able to find the formula for all movement in the universe and predict future events.
His belief in the immortality of the soul also persevered into the new intellectual shift. It was based
on the traditional myth of Hades, the land of the dead, but put forth further logical conclusions.

Pericles Funeral Oration Speech
When thinking of Athens, it is quite possible that the first thing you think of is something along the
lines of them having great success and an ideal lifestyle. Athens' stereotype is that it was the most
amazing place to live because of their successfulness in democracy and war.
This speech is called "Pericles' Funeral Oration" by Thucydides, and it was delivered by Pericles, an
Athenian politician, at a funeral for the war dead after the first year of the Peloponnesian War. In this
speech, Pericles basically boasts to the family and friends of these deceased warriors about how
amazing Athens is and how important the warriors were to them. He begins by saying that their
"constitution does not copy the laws of neighboring states" to set them apart from any and every
other place that may be deemed as competition to Athens. One thing that he appears to be very
proud of is Athens' way of handling their democracy. It was not a common idea that every person
was able to participate in the city's politics, so Pericles makes sure to say that it "favours the many
instead of the few" when speaking of Athens' democracy. Their democracy is described to be an
incredible system in which each and every citizen of Athens gets a chance to participate regardless
of their social ranking or any other thing that may affect their relevance to society. Pericles says that
"if a man is able to serve the state, he is not hindered by the obscurity of his conditions" rather that
be low social standing

The Wasps Analysis
The Wasps is a satirical comedy written in 422 BCE by Aristophanes as the Peloponnesian War was
coming to an end. The playwright's purpose for writing this is to mock the Athenian society at the
time. Because Athens also became a democracy during the 5th century, this comedy is particularly
controversial since during the time it was written, the courts were being severely manipulated and
corrupted by Cleon. In addition to this, there various other conflicts that take place during the time
that this was written. The plot centers around the protagonist Philocleon and his antagonist
Misocleon and uses the popular Athenian democratic ideology to point out its very own flaws. The
playwright criticizes both the judicial conflicts, which is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In relation to the metaphor of wasps, the text refers to the house as being netted. It seems that there
is only one door in the home giving it a sense of a dungeon–like dwelling. Misocleon sleeps on the
roof and is presumably guarding it in the instance that his father tries to escape from there rather
than the door he is aware of being blocked off. The well–intentioned Misocleon, tries to deter his
father from his usual routine of going to the courts to sit on the jury for less than a livable wage.
Although his plan is doomed to fail, he still attempts to save his father from his job as a wage slave
who has unknowingly pledged his allegiance to Cleon, the demagogue. Although Philocleon does
escape from his son's poorly thought out trap, Misocleon does not accept defeat but rather attempts
to reason with his father. The father's willingness to at least debate the issue shows that he is a fair
man and is willing to hear what others have to say. Based on their discussion, the reader can see an
obvious gap in generational understanding of the litigious Athenian democracy. Philocleon is
illusioned by his petty wages and is obsessed with the praise of others and the benefit that come
along with his position such as the affection of his own daughter (600–5). However, Misocleon fires
back at his partisan father explaining that when he takes into account all of the taxes, then the
income that he is so prided in, is nothing but 1/10th of what the city makes. (650–5). He

What Is The 5th Wave Essay
The 5th wave by Rick Yancey opens after aliens have invaded and attacked earth. First, an
electromagnetic pulse cut of all electricity; then, massive tsunamis wiped out three million people;
next a deadly virus killed 97% of the remaining survivors; then the aliens infiltrated the earth, and
the few remaining humans can't trust anyone.
I haven't read many sci–fi books, so while going into it, I didn't know what to expect. Books about
alien invasions aren't usually my cup of tea, but I'm pleased to say that I enjoyed the book very
much. Yancey manages to describe an invasion by aliens that makes you think that this is how it

Socrates Punishment And Punishments
In most circumstances ending the life of a criminal as their punishment usually reflects the
magnitude of the crimes that they committed, crimes that often involve the deaths of others or
equally heinous actions, yet one historical example stands out for not following this rule. In 399 BC,
in Athens, Greece, two men put a meek philosopher named Socrates on trial for two crimes he
purportedly committed: not following state gods and corrupting the youth. These charges alleged
against Socrates reflected the general sentiment of Athenians regarding Socrates; namely that he was
an atheistic charlatan. The jury found Socrates guilty of these crimes and executed, a punishment
that does not logically befit the supposed crimes that he committed. No sane or logical jury would
find him guilty of such vague claims, especially in such a vehemently democratic polis as Athens,
and they would never have executed Socrates for such meager offenses, nonetheless he was.
Execution was especially unnecessary because Socrates himself was on the verge of death; he was in
his seventies in the Greek era, so he was bound to die soon anyways. The central focus, then, is of
understanding how on Earth the birthplace of democracy could have gone so awry and when they
tried, convicted, and executed Socrates. Athens sentenced Socrates to death because his beliefs were
against the flow of the changing Athenian ideological landscape, people regarded him as a pompous,
elitist charlatan who impugned their core

Athenian Democracy Vs. Oligarchy Of Sparta?
Were the people better served by the democracy in Athens or the oligarchy of Sparta? Stephanie M.
Athens and Sparta are two powerful city–states, different from each other in such way that
Athenian democracy focuses on economic advancement, while Sparta oligarchy focuses on military
force. Democracy is a system of government where the citizens have the right to vote, whereas the
oligarchy is when a group of people is in control of the government and it's only their opinion and
decision that are taken to consideration. Implicating the thesis that people are better served by
Athenian democracy than the Spartan oligarchy, which is supported by three evidence points.
Firstly, the Athenian citizen's participation in government, by voting and taking part in the
government position.Secondly, the Athenian men are provided with better education by being taught
how to read and write, not only focused on military training. Lastly, the Athens advancement in
military protection for the safety of its citizens.
Athenian citizen makes more contribution to government rather than Spartans. The Athenian
government allows citizen to be a member of the government except for the military position, as its
stated on an article that " each citizen can be voted for each legislation"(Echos in the past, page,
print). Which signify that being in the government position means having the capability and not the
wealth. In the athenian

Sparta 's Dependence On Persian Money
Sparta's dependence on Persian money in the last years of the war reflects another consequence of
this alliance. At the onset of the Peloponnesian War, Sparta positioned itself as the liberators of
Greece. They justified their aggression by claiming their primary objective was to free those living
under Athenian tyranny. Thucydides claims most Greeks hoped for a Spartan victory,
Men's feelings inclined much more to the Spartans, especially as they proclaimed themselves the
liberators of Hellas. No private or public effort that could help them in speech or action was omitted;
each thinking that the cause suffered wherever he could not himself see it. So general was the
indignation felt against Athens, whether by those who wished to escape from her empire or were
apprehensive of being absorbed by it.
After Athens' defeat at Syracuse in 413, the pro–Sparta sentiment intensified. Previously neutral
cities joined the Peloponnesians, and Sparta's allies contributed heavily in ships and money in hopes
of ending the war quickly. However, because Persian support inevitably also meant the
abandonment of Ionian Greeks to the empire, the alliance with the Asian king destroyed this
goodwill and reduced the willingness of their allies to contribute to the war effort.
The first official treaty, signed in the summer of 412, favored the Persians to a laughable degree. The
pact required Sparta to recognize all territory held by Darius' ancestors as under Persian control. In

Make Athens A Better Society
As a retired sailor, I am just seeking for peace and forgiveness, all of my arguments will be based on
my life experiences and my expertise as the Sailor that I once was. All I want is the best for my
family and the people of Athens, I have seen the destruction of war and the best way to avoid war
and future problems, in my opinion, is by education ourselves to become better citizens and live
peacefully among each other. We have to start making a radical change in this society; we have to
stop getting easily influenced by our governors and have our own voice heard, don't change the
country, change the people in the country. I believe that the best way to have our voice heard is by

We want to listen to what they think; we need to know their opinion because every person has a
whole different perspective of how things should be done, we have to let them know why is it
important for them to attend Assembly. Those different perspectives can help in Assembly, every
opinion can help change or improve the opinions of other people, that's why we'll need the opinions
of the Athenian people. Now that we have seen our enemies destroy our town, trashed our values,
and raped our women, now it's the time to make this government different and we can change it by
attending Assembly, not just for the money, but for the future generations of Athens. Some people at
first won't attend Assembly due to the lack of education that they have; they will feel embarrassed to
attend Assembly, but we have to let them know that we want their opinions and their perspectives
based on the life experience that they all have had. We have to unify all social classes into Assembly,

National Cranberry Cooperative Case
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In the current scenario, the major bottlenecks in the system are the drying units for wet berries and
the berry separation lines. While the drying units' capacity can be increased by purchasing additional
units, the throughput of the system will still be limited by the limitation of the separation lines. If the
average rate of inflow of berries is 1500bbl/hr, then with the effective separation capacity of
1200bbl/hr, the plant will incur a backlog of 300bbl/hr.
If the shift start times stay as it is, and the processing divisions start four hours after the receiving
division, the truckers toward the end of the day will have to wait, since the cumulative backlog
caused by processing will exhaust the bin storage capacity. ... Show more content on

2. There are two limitations on throughput for Receiving Plant 1. For wet cranberries, throughput is
limited by the Dryer capacity to 600 bbl/hr. In terms of total throughput of RP1, the limitation is on
separating capacity at 1200 bbl/hr. At the drying unit, the total processing rate of wet berries falls
short of the arrival rate (1050 bbl/hr) by 450 bbl/hr. The solution is to either increase the overtime
hours, purchase additional dryers or a combination of both.
Option I: No dryers are purchased and overtimes are added: Total received per day (12 hrs)
Accumulation till 7.00 pm if processing start at 11.00 am Processing in a day (12 hrs) Additional
hours reqd # Additional overtime cost* per peak Peak Season (09/20 – 10/9) wet 12x1050=12600
4200+8*450=7800 600x12= 7200 9 hours for processing USD 9*36*6*20=
38880
dry 12x450=5400 1800 + 8*0=1800 600x12= 7200 0 hours
# (shortfall in wet berry processing capacity/processing speed) (12600–7200)/600= 9 hours
* staff need to be hired in shipping(15 workers for one additional hour), dechaffing (one worker),
milling(15) and shipping units (20)
** overtime charges @ USD 6.00 per worker per hour
Thus dry berries are processed in full while there is considerable backlog in wet berries which will
necessitate 9 hours of overtime but still would not able to avoid truckers' queues.

Society Brewing was having their first bottle release which in this case was in the form a 32oz
crowler. 375 crowlers (3 per person) would, in fact, be released to fans who had come from as far
away as Miami. What is Pulp you ask? Well, it is an American pale wheat ale that comes in at 6.3%

Mosaic hops which give it the sweet smell and taste of a myriad of citrus flavors. Pulp pours with

The Elements Of Democracy In Ancient Sparta And Athens
According to Brand (2010) there were very different political models in ancient Sparta and Athens.
Indeed, he advises that Athens was a much more developed powerhouse, where today's democracy
initiated, whereby Sparta was, conversely, a fierce warmongering state where only male warriors
participated in politics. However, Brand also acknowledges elements of democracy in both city
states.
In the case of Sparta, the 'ecclesia', or the 'apella' were the eligible voting public (Larkin, n.d.) Only
Spartan free men of adulthood were able to vote, and adulthood was granted on the Spartan's 30th
birthday. Additionally, women, immigrants and 'unequals' such as Helots were ineligible to vote
(Brand, 2010.) In this instance we see the basic semblance of a voting public, but, as Brand (2010)
states, whilst the apella' met once a month to discuss issues, their scope of influence was severely
limited. The Spartan political model was a hierarchy of two kings (historically from two ancient
ruling families) whose balance was kept in check by three (later) five 'Ephors' who were elected
annually, and who kept the kings' power at a moderate level (Brand, 2010.) Beneath the Ephors were
the 'Gerousia'. According to Larkin (n.d.), "It consisted of 28 Gerontes (Senators... elders over the
age of 60) plus two kings. These elders were elected by the Assembly for life. The Gerousia
controlled much of the public business and decided on what the Assembly could debate. They could
also veto actions taken

Rhetorical Analysis Of The Perils Of Indifference
A Rhetorical Analysis of the Societal Implications of "The Perils of Indifference" Distinguished
writer and Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel, in his speech, "The Perils of Indifference", discusses the
effects indifference has on one's humanity in both societal and individual terms. Wiesel's purpose is
to illustrate the plight of those who suffer because of indifference and to appeal to the audience's
consciences. He adopts a sympathetic, haunting, and accusatory tone in order to convey to audiences
that society had not learned from the past and many victims will continue to suffer injustices in this
new millennium. Ultimately, through the means of syntax devices such as juxtaposition, anaphora,
powerful diction, and rhetorical questioning, Weisel bolsters the supporting logic of his claim that
indifference is a grave malady of humanity and to amend such an ailment one must look no further
than the self. Wiesel's comprehensive speech, "The Perils of Indifference" can be divided into three
definitive sections: the contextualization of the suffering that occurs both past and present, an
explication of "indifference", and lastly Wiesel's earnest undertaking and rhetorical questioning of
why we practice indifference. In the first few paragraphs, Wiesel employs juxtaposition to draw a
contrast between the various time periods referenced and establishes his tone through cogent diction.

British Military Force Analysis
The sheer supremacy of the British military force was more than capable of expeditiously
suppressing an amateur rebellion and successfully restoring the insurgent colonies to their innate
allegiance. Until Washington finally adopted a defensive strategy at the fortress of Harlem Heights,
the British undoubtedly had a significant military leverage over the Americans; therefore, if Lord
Germain's [Germain] strategy were properly employed, the British should have won. Germain
informed General William Howe [Howe], and subsequently General Henry Clinton [Clinton], of his
plan in which "a decisive blow had to be delivered" before any reconciliation so that the
"overwhelming force" would shock "the rebels into recognizing the futility of their cause." ... Show

The only reason the Continental Army was spared was because of Howe's secret "hopes of
negotiating a peaceful end to the rebellion." He was also so sure of the fact that "British victory was
inevitable, which in turn meant that a more limited strategy was wholly adequate." By delaying the
process of suppression, the Continental Army gradually gained experience and courage. Washington
also learned from his mistakes in the Battle of New York and ignored his "aggressive military
instincts;" he eventually put aside his "honor–driven character" to adopt a new attitude towards his
definition of a victory. "Though it ran counter to all his instincts, he now realized that his goal was
not to win the war but rather not to lose it," and thus he embraced a defensive strategy in the fortress
of Harlem Heights. However, before this pivotal moment in history, Howe could have and probably
should have listened to Clinton in targeting the Continental Army at King's Bridge." However,

early end to the Continental Army, but chose not to in order to remain civilized and reduce

Hoplites Into Democracy Analysis
In his 1996 work titled Hoplites into Democrats: The Changing Ideology of Athenian Infantry,
Victor Hanson analyzes the timeline of the Athenian government as it transitions into a democracy
and the effect this transition had on their warfare culture. Throughout the article, Hanson refers to
the seventh and sixth century BC as the 'normative polis' before democracy when the government
was timocratical and Athens was an early agrarian polis; and then continues his article to emphasize
the fifth and fourth centuries BC during the political reforms and the emergence of democracy as the
main form of government. Hanson mentions the tensions that arose between landowners and non–

With continuous war and battles being fought, the Athenian farmers gained profits because of
"greater opportunity for theft" (301). Hanson pulls from the fragmented works of an anonymous
Oxyrhynchus Historian to support his plundering claim. The historian writes that "the Athenian
countryside was 'the most lavishly furnished' in Greece" (300). Hanson draws to the conclusion that
"Attic farmers in the fifth century BC often took rural property from conquered subjects and then
re–employed it on their own farms" (301). With money being the new standard of privilege, as
stated earlier, farmers utilized the lavish material items they plundered to gain economic status
within their culture. Another policy that Attic farmers enjoyed under democracy was the
"introduction of pay for hoplite military service... sometime around the mid–fifth century BC"
(301). Hanson notes that Athenian farmers "were discovering the attractions democracy had to
offer" (301) since compensation was nonexistent during agrarian warfare because it was a necessity
to fight to save the farm. The burden of battle shifted between the old regime, where the agrarian
community faced battle alone, and the new regime, where the burden was on the entire polis to fight
for each other's land (301). As generations continued, a new kind of self–interested Athenian hoplite

The Benefits Of The Athenian Democracy
The athenian democracy started to develop after the Persian War. Under Particle's rule, Athens
economy thrived and the government became more democratic. Not all Athens citizen agree about
the idea of democracy. There also people who supported democracy, because they think it will help
free the citizens from the rule of tyrants and long. To make Athens democracy stronger they have to
bring people together. First, Athenian democracy should be about every citizen and how they should
take part in Athens democracy. For example, many people who are part of Athenian democracy are
the ones who owned parts of the land. "The word democracy had not yet been invented, the
foundations has been laid" (D#7). This shows that, only the rich are part of the Athenian democracy
and not all the poor citizens were part of Athenian democracy. Many of the poor citizens didn't
receive the rights they deserved. In conclusion, not all of the citizens of Athen were a part of the
Athenian democracy. Second, Athens democracy is about how no one should be above the law. For
example, if you commit a crime, then you should get the punishment for your crime. "... required to
pay the penalty: He had to settle his private affairs within ten days and to depart from the city for ten
years" (D#6). This shows that, the government is trying to maintain order by punishing people who
commit a crime without a look at who they are. There are consequence for their actions. In
conclusion, by maintaining

Democracy And Athenian Democracy
"Our constitution is called a democracy because power is in the hands not of a minority but of the
whole people." (Dale. Civilizations in History. Alternative Two. Pg. 92) This quotation perfectly
summarizes Athenian democracy, a system in which all citizens had a say in affecting their daily
lives. This is a contrast to Spartan oligarchy, which limited power to a small group of men. Athenian
democracy encouraged citizens to use their voice and consequently make an impact on their society.
The government included more people's opinions, gave Athenians a more lavish lifestyle and offered
more freedom within the education system. This essay will prove that Athenian democracy left
Athens a more open civilization, which therefore better ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since Athenians could help make decisions, they were more pleased with the outcome. Also, with a
more diverse range of men voting, they were able to use the opinions of different classes, instead of
strictly aristocrats who used to hold all the power and still did in Sparta. Undoubtedly, with the
power Athenian democracy gave to its people, they were better served.
Since Athenian citizens had the power to impact their government, their values were displayed in the
decisions that were made. Athens enjoyed spreading their culture to different places, learning from
others, and trading for expensive items, which is shown by this excerpt. "Then the greatness of our
city brings it about that all the good things from all over the world flow into us, so that to us it seems
just as natural to enjoy foreign goods as our own local products..." (Dale. Civilizations in History.
Alternative Two. Pg. 92) Athens was a nation that was willing to adapt, whereas Sparta did not want
to change whatsoever, which is clearly presented by this quotation. "They were suspicious of

Fahrenheit 451 5th Wave Analysis
There are a lot of things similar and different in Fahrenheit 451 and The 5th Wave. One of the things
similar is that the people do not know what was happening in other places of the world. They are
only concerned about their own lives. One thing that is different is that The 5th Wave is taking place
in a post–apocalypse world while Fahrenheit 451 is taking place in a world in the future where
technology is very advanced. Another thing that is similar is that the government did not tell the
people what was going on. Something that is different about this is that the people in Fahrenheit 451
did not care that the government was not telling them anything. In the 5th Wave, the people actually
cared. Another thing that is different is the enemy. In The 5th Wave, the enemy is the aliens or the
Others. In Fahrenheit 451, the enemy is the government because they view humans as a weapon. In
Fahrenheit 451, it says "One drop of rain. Clarisse. Another drop. Mildred. A third. The uncle. A
fourth. The fire tonight. One, Clarisse. Two, Mildred. Three, uncle. Four, fire. One, Mildred, two,
Clarisse. One, two, three, four, five, Clarisse, Mildred, uncle, fire, sleeping tablets, men, disposable

Disadvantages Of Millenniums
The Millenniums are being defined as the group of individuals that are born between the years of
1982 and 2000 approximately. They are also the generation that is considered "Generation Y."
Millenniums are not their parents and grandparents that believed it so very important as an adult to
settle down and get married. The previous generation was always about finding a career and settling
down for stability. The stability angle is the getting a career and putting down roots by securing a
home. The "Y" generation is the generation that has a single parenting and less stability than the
generations prior. The "Y" generation has had the ability to live with the "helicopter down" parents
that hoover over them and short the ability to grow and learn.
Millenniums are not making purchases of homes because they are still living at home with their
parents. The fact that most of the "Y generation" fail to launch out of their parents' home to gain the
career and stability could be through the concept of the parents limiting the growth of their children
by being the "helicopter parent." The "helicopter parent" hovers over the child to the point that they
are not able to make decisions in a form. The anxiousness of the parent leads to the disbelief that
these children even as legal adults that they can make routine decisions on their own. The inability
to make decisions as a young person stalled their ability to thrive, make decisions and fail to learn a
better way to live life.

The Y2K Hysteria By Richard Landes

  • 1. The Y2k Hysteria By Richard Landes This phrase and the belief that the world was formed in 6 days with a 7th for rest, gave the early Christians a view that the world would last for 6000 years. According to scriptures the world had a beginning, it had a "now" in which they were living and a promised end. This end was proclaimed in the Olivet discourse (Matthew 24, Luke 21, Mark 13), but with warnings that none on Earth would know when. The Y2K hysteria caused many scholar to wonder how the millennial dates past where thought of by those that lived in that time. This essay is a discussion on whether merging of dates with the idea of six millennia (1000 year) periods was just an intellectual exercise or directly gave rise to apocalyptic thought. Richard Landes' papers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was part of the problem chronologists had in merging dates systems. Landes' diagram showing the various chronological systems, that highlights when they hit the 6th Millennium. Note: the vertical dotted lines, of the changing a date system to avert the "dangerous" millennium. From this it seems obvious that the church fathers of Augustine and later Boniface must have made the decision to change dating to avoid the Millennium fever. But that is not quite the full picture. It does not consider the intervening centuries of learning, translation and scholarship creating better methods of calculations. Figure 1 – chronographical shifts and apocalyptic target dates. (illustration by Richard Landes.) The study of chronology has been a pursuit of many a scholar over the ages. We should note that it was not just early Christians who were interested in this. Rabbi Yossi ben Halafta, a 2nd century scholar, calculated the beginning date of the Hebrew calendar from when Adam & Eve were created (Year 1 of Jewish calendar) which (adjusted for modern calendar) was October 7, 3761BC. . The old Testament part of the Bible was a collection of the religious writings from Jewish Torah, giving a chronology from Genesis to well before the Coming of Jesus. Various ... • 3. Short Story : The 5th Wave About 1 year ago, I lost all of my strength. I couldn't walk. I couldn't stand. Ugh! I couldn't even lift my head to look up without help. Instead of playing and enjoying outside in the summer with my siblings, I had to stay inside and lay down on my couch 24/7. I had to use a wheelchair to move around. Although this was a hard time in my life, I learned to adapt, or adjust, to my new life, just like the characters in the story "The Sniper", and the novel The 5th Wave. Cassie Sullivan is a very adaptable, tough girl, though at first sight people may not think that. In the story The 5th Wave, Cassie is just a regular, shy, high school girl. That all changed when an alien UFO arrived on earth, bringing 5 waves of different challenges to kill off the human race. Wave 1: "Lights Out". The aliens sent an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP to knock out every electronic device. Cars, lights, medical equipment, none of these devices worked. Wave 2: "Surf's Up". The aliens dropped a giant metal rod on one of the rifts in the tectonic plates, causing massive tsunamis all around the world, taking out anything that was near the sea. Wave 3: "Pestilence". Birds all around the world transmitted a disease to humans, worse than the Black Plague, ending the lives of 7 billion people. Wave 4: "Silencer".The aliens disguised themselves as humans and sniped all of the humans they saw without making a noise. However, a few people have managed to survive. Cassie Sullivan is one of the last humans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Rituals Are An Important Aspect Of Human Interaction And... Rituals are an important aspect of human interaction and society, and they provide a link and support to those around us. Rituals make us self–aware of our emotional state and provide spiritual refuge when we need it. They are the vessel through which we can become closer to our gods or deities; they are sanctuaries in time of need, distractions from the overwhelming feeling of dealing with life and its troubles, they are the pillars of faith that keep us intact. Without them, we would be a very distant and disconnected society. The ritual I have chosen to discuss is one that particularly caught my attention, including the many variations of it as well–the Buddhist Fire Ritual, or Homa (goma). The purpose of this ritual is to get rid of negative energies and to cleanse the mind and spirit, and involves the beating of drums, chanting of mantras, and of course, fire. Variations of this ritual depend on the occasion, but they all include the burning of the fire, invoking higher powers, and reciting said mantras. As part of my research on this ritual, I looked up a YouTube video on it and found it to be very interesting. The one I watched of this ritual being performed took place in a small, dimly–lit room, mainly lit up with ceremonial candles, holding few people and two Buddhist priests. One was chanting the mantras, beating a Taiko drum, and shaking bells while the other did the work with the fire and the main aspect of the ritual. After distributing what was ... Throughput is defined as Throughput=Min {Input rate, Process capacity, Demand rate} Input Rate = 3000 bbls/hr Input Rate and Demand Rate > Process Capacity Throughput =Min {Process Capacity} It is evident from the process flowchart that the capacity of the drying unit is minimum at 450 and maximum at 600 bbls/hr. However, this does not apply to dry berries. Both dry and wet berries go through the separation process with a capacity of 1200 bbls/hr. Since 70% of the berries are wet, the capacity for separation is recalculated as Separation capacity for wet berries = 70% of 1200 bbls/hr = 840 bbls/hr Separation capacity for dry berries = 30% of 1200 bbls/hr = 360 bbls/hr Since the output from the dryer unit for wet ... Critical Analysis of The 5th Wave Essay In a world where a mysterious alien race has besieged Earth– survival is the ultimate goal. 95% of the world's population was not able to achieve this goal; Cassie Sullivan is one of the "lucky" ones. The "others,"as the humans call them, set up five waves to eradicate the human race. Surviving the first wave wasn't too difficult, it was, after all, just an EMP strike. The second wave really shook the world, literally. The aliens set the Earth's tectonic plates in motion, causing thousands of off–the– chart earthquakes. The tsunamis that spurred from these quakes were detrimental; killing about 50 percent of the world's overall population. The third wave proved to be the most emotionally devastating. Throughout the book, Thucydides recounts the war and tells of the many actions of his mother land Athens. In several of his descriptions Athens could be viewed as arrogant especially towards their accomplishments in war. He also tells of a terrible crime that Athens commits that could be described as genocide. Thucydides also describes several simpleminded mistakes that were made that crippled Athens in the end and could have been prevented with more through thinking. Despite being powerful and dominant on the battlefield the Athenians suffer crippling defeat in the end. The arrogance, cruelty, and foolishness that Athens displayed brought fate down on Athens and caused their defeat in the Peloponnesian War. Athens displayed their arrogance multiple times throughout the war. During a battle at Pylos Sparta attempted to make peace with Athens through a truce. When offered the truce, Athens rejects it thinking that "The treaty would be ready for them whenever they chose to make it". (Landmark Thucydides. Book 4; 4.21, Pg.425). • 28. Pythagoras And Ancient Athenian Culture Pythagoras and Ancient Athenian Culture The ancient Greeks did not always possess the deeply creative and accepting culture imagined by society today. They started off as very ritualistic and stubbornly polytheistic, rejecting those who denied the gods and ostracising people who seemed unpious. While some of these traits never disappeared, others became more like the Greeks we recognize today starting in the fifth century BCE. It was around this time that Pythagoras lived and taught. Today we remember him as the founder of much of modern mathematics, but at the time he was also the founder of a religious and philosophical sect that carried on for centuries after his death. Pythagoras was not only a mathematician; in fact it is sometimes doubted whether the math we attribute to him was actually his own work or simply reprocessing of the work of others. He was instead generally seen as a religious figure and was the leader of what is sometimes referred to as a "cult." He was described as "part philosopher, part priest, and part conjuror" and had a lot of bearing in both the religious and scientific views of his time. He believed that religion and science were indeed one and the same, with math serving as a pathway for discovering the workings of the universe. This belief was controversial, and many philosophers referred to Pythagoras sarcastically, but it was a belief that would continue onward throughout Greek history in the minds of other philosophers, such as Aristotle. It was the basis for the interest in mathematics and astronomy, because he taught that by learning the movement of the heavenly bodies, or planets, humans would be able to find the formula for all movement in the universe and predict future events. His belief in the immortality of the soul also persevered into the new intellectual shift. Pericles Funeral Oration Speech When thinking of Athens, it is quite possible that the first thing you think of is something along the lines of them having great success and an ideal lifestyle. Athens' stereotype is that it was the most amazing place to live because of their successfulness in democracy and war. This speech is called "Pericles' Funeral Oration" by Thucydides, and it was delivered by Pericles, an Athenian politician, at a funeral for the war dead after the first year of the Peloponnesian War. In this speech, Pericles basically boasts to the family and friends of these deceased warriors about how amazing Athens is and how important the warriors were to them. He begins by saying that their "constitution does not copy the laws of neighboring states" to set them apart from any and every other place that may be deemed as competition to Athens. One thing that he appears to be very proud of is Athens' way of handling their democracy. It was not a common idea that every person was able to participate in the city's politics, so Pericles makes sure to say that it "favours the many instead of the few" when speaking of Athens' democracy. Their democracy is described to be an incredible system in which each and every citizen of Athens gets a chance to participate regardless of their social ranking or any other thing that may affect their relevance to society. • 32. The Wasps Analysis The Wasps is a satirical comedy written in 422 BCE by Aristophanes as the Peloponnesian War was coming to an end. The playwright's purpose for writing this is to mock the Athenian society at the time. Because Athens also became a democracy during the 5th century, this comedy is particularly controversial since during the time it was written, the courts were being severely manipulated and corrupted by Cleon. In addition to this, there various other conflicts that take place during the time that this was written. The well–intentioned Misocleon, tries to deter his father from his usual routine of going to the courts to sit on the jury for less than a livable wage. Although his plan is doomed to fail, he still attempts to save his father from his job as a wage slave who has unknowingly pledged his allegiance to Cleon, the demagogue. Although Philocleon does escape from his son's poorly thought out trap, Misocleon does not accept defeat but rather attempts to reason with his father. The father's willingness to at least debate the issue shows that he is a fair man and is willing to hear what others have to say. Based on their discussion, the reader can see an obvious gap in generational understanding of the litigious Athenian democracy. Philocleon is illusioned by his petty wages and is obsessed with the praise of others and the benefit that come along with his position such as the affection of his own daughter (600–5). Socrates Punishment And Punishments In most circumstances ending the life of a criminal as their punishment usually reflects the magnitude of the crimes that they committed, crimes that often involve the deaths of others or equally heinous actions, yet one historical example stands out for not following this rule. In 399 BC, in Athens, Greece, two men put a meek philosopher named Socrates on trial for two crimes he purportedly committed: not following state gods and corrupting the youth. These charges alleged against Socrates reflected the general sentiment of Athenians regarding Socrates; namely that he was an atheistic charlatan. The jury found Socrates guilty of these crimes and executed, a punishment that does not logically befit the supposed crimes that he committed. No sane or logical jury would find him guilty of such vague claims, especially in such a vehemently democratic polis as Athens, and they would never have executed Socrates for such meager offenses, nonetheless he was. Execution was especially unnecessary because Socrates himself was on the verge of death; he was in his seventies in the Greek era, so he was bound to die soon anyways. The central focus, then, is of understanding how on Earth the birthplace of democracy could have gone so awry and when they tried, convicted, and executed Socrates. Athens sentenced Socrates to death because his beliefs were against the flow of the changing Athenian ideological landscape, people regarded him as a pompous, elitist charlatan who impugned their core ... • 42. Athenian Democracy Vs. Oligarchy Of Sparta? Were the people better served by the democracy in Athens or the oligarchy of Sparta? Stephanie M. Athens and Sparta are two powerful city–states, different from each other in such way that Athenian democracy focuses on economic advancement, while Sparta oligarchy focuses on military force. Democracy is a system of government where the citizens have the right to vote, whereas the oligarchy is when a group of people is in control of the government and it's only their opinion and decision that are taken to consideration. Implicating the thesis that people are better served by Athenian democracy than the Spartan oligarchy, which is supported by three evidence points. Firstly, the Athenian citizen's participation in government, by voting and taking part in the government position.Secondly, the Athenian men are provided with better education by being taught how to read and write, not only focused on military training. Lastly, the Athens advancement in military protection for the safety of its citizens. Athenian citizen makes more contribution to government rather than Spartans. The Athenian government allows citizen to be a member of the government except for the military position, as its stated on an article that " each citizen can be voted for each legislation"(Echos in the past, page, print). • 44. Sparta 's Dependence On Persian Money Sparta's dependence on Persian money in the last years of the war reflects another consequence of this alliance. At the onset of the Peloponnesian War, Sparta positioned itself as the liberators of Greece. They justified their aggression by claiming their primary objective was to free those living under Athenian tyranny. Thucydides claims most Greeks hoped for a Spartan victory, Men's feelings inclined much more to the Spartans, especially as they proclaimed themselves the liberators of Hellas. No private or public effort that could help them in speech or action was omitted; each thinking that the cause suffered wherever he could not himself see it. So general was the indignation felt against Athens, whether by those who wished to escape from her empire or were apprehensive of being absorbed by it. After Athens' defeat at Syracuse in 413, the pro–Sparta sentiment intensified. Previously neutral cities joined the Peloponnesians, and Sparta's allies contributed heavily in ships and money in hopes of ending the war quickly. However, because Persian support inevitably also meant the abandonment of Ionian Greeks to the empire, the alliance with the Asian king destroyed this goodwill and reduced the willingness of their allies to contribute to the war effort. The first official treaty, signed in the summer of 412, favored the Persians to a laughable degree. The pact required Sparta to recognize all territory held by Darius' ancestors as under Persian control. In addition to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If the average rate of inflow of berries is 1500bbl/hr, then with the effective separation capacity of 1200bbl/hr, the plant will incur a backlog of 300bbl/hr. • 50. Civil Society Brewing Case Study March 19th, 2016 forever changed the beer landscape for Jupiter, Florida. This was the first of what will be many bottle and/or can releases for one of the newest breweries to grace the South Florida horizon. A woman walking by asked me what the line was for. I proceeded to explain how Civil Society Brewing was having their first bottle release which in this case was in the form a 32oz crowler. 375 crowlers (3 per person) would, in fact, be released to fans who had come from as far away as Miami. What is Pulp you ask? Well, it is an American pale wheat ale that comes in at 6.3% abv. Civil takes the wheat beer to a whole new level by lovingly caressing it with Columbus and Mosaic hops which give it the sweet smell and taste of a myriad of citrus flavors. Pulp pours with just the slightest of yellow haze ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We opened a growler of Tree House Brewing's Double Shot, a bottle of Hardywood Park Craft Breweries Foolery, and a bottle of Casey Brewing's East Bank. By the time 11:00am had rolled around the line had reached 67 craft beer loving souls. The doors were opened and ID's were checked. The whole process ran very smooth. Folks waited in line for a few minutes until reaching the front where they chose a wristband which was color coordinated with the number of crowlers they were purchasing. Once the wristband was received we were able to purchase something from the tap menu. Other than Pulp the two hits of the morning seemed to be the two treatments of Gary. Gary is Civil's milk stout which was treated with Hazelnuts for 'Gary goes nuts' and with bananas foster for 'Gary goes bananas.' I'm usually not a big fan of hazelnut beers, but 'Gary goes nuts' was delicious. 'Gary goes bananas' was also very good, but the hazelnut took the win for me. • 54. The Elements Of Democracy In Ancient Sparta And Athens According to Brand (2010) there were very different political models in ancient Sparta and Athens. Indeed, he advises that Athens was a much more developed powerhouse, where today's democracy initiated, whereby Sparta was, conversely, a fierce warmongering state where only male warriors participated in politics. However, Brand also acknowledges elements of democracy in both city states. In the case of Sparta, the 'ecclesia', or the 'apella' were the eligible voting public (Larkin, n.d.) Only Spartan free men of adulthood were able to vote, and adulthood was granted on the Spartan's 30th birthday. Additionally, women, immigrants and 'unequals' such as Helots were ineligible to vote (Brand, 2010.) In this instance we see the basic semblance of a voting public, but, as Brand (2010) states, whilst the apella' met once a month to discuss issues, their scope of influence was severely limited. The Spartan political model was a hierarchy of two kings (historically from two ancient ruling families) whose balance was kept in check by three (later) five 'Ephors' who were elected annually, and who kept the kings' power at a moderate level (Brand, 2010.) Beneath the Ephors were the 'Gerousia'. According to Larkin (n.d.), "It consisted of 28 Gerontes (Senators... elders over the age of 60) plus two kings. These elders were elected by the Assembly for life. The Gerousia controlled much of the public business and decided on what the Assembly could debate. They could also veto actions taken ... • 56. Rhetorical Analysis Of The Perils Of Indifference A Rhetorical Analysis of the Societal Implications of "The Perils of Indifference" Distinguished writer and Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel, in his speech, "The Perils of Indifference", discusses the effects indifference has on one's humanity in both societal and individual terms. Wiesel's purpose is to illustrate the plight of those who suffer because of indifference and to appeal to the audience's consciences. He adopts a sympathetic, haunting, and accusatory tone in order to convey to audiences that society had not learned from the past and many victims will continue to suffer injustices in this new millennium. Ultimately, through the means of syntax devices such as juxtaposition, anaphora, powerful diction, and rhetorical questioning, Weisel bolsters the supporting logic of his claim that indifference is a grave malady of humanity and to amend such an ailment one must look no further than the self. Wiesel's comprehensive speech, "The Perils of Indifference" can be divided into three definitive sections: the contextualization of the suffering that occurs both past and present, an explication of "indifference", and lastly Wiesel's earnest undertaking and rhetorical questioning of why we practice indifference. In the first few paragraphs, Wiesel employs juxtaposition to draw a contrast between the various time periods referenced and establishes his tone through cogent diction. The speaker also makes a point, to properly address his audience and the authority individuals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 58. British Military Force Analysis The sheer supremacy of the British military force was more than capable of expeditiously suppressing an amateur rebellion and successfully restoring the insurgent colonies to their innate allegiance. Until Washington finally adopted a defensive strategy at the fortress of Harlem Heights, the British undoubtedly had a significant military leverage over the Americans; therefore, if Lord Germain's [Germain] strategy were properly employed, the British should have won. Germain informed General William Howe [Howe], and subsequently General Henry Clinton [Clinton], of his plan in which "a decisive blow had to be delivered" before any reconciliation so that the "overwhelming force" would shock "the rebels into recognizing the futility of their cause." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The only reason the Continental Army was spared was because of Howe's secret "hopes of negotiating a peaceful end to the rebellion." He was also so sure of the fact that "British victory was inevitable, which in turn meant that a more limited strategy was wholly adequate." By delaying the process of suppression, the Continental Army gradually gained experience and courage. Washington also learned from his mistakes in the Battle of New York and ignored his "aggressive military instincts;" he eventually put aside his "honor–driven character" to adopt a new attitude towards his definition of a victory. "Though it ran counter to all his instincts, he now realized that his goal was not to win the war but rather not to lose it," and thus he embraced a defensive strategy in the fortress of Harlem Heights. However, before this pivotal moment in history, Howe could have and probably should have listened to Clinton in targeting the Continental Army at King's Bridge." Hoplites Into Democracy Analysis In his 1996 work titled Hoplites into Democrats: The Changing Ideology of Athenian Infantry, Victor Hanson analyzes the timeline of the Athenian government as it transitions into a democracy and the effect this transition had on their warfare culture. Throughout the article, Hanson refers to the seventh and sixth century BC as the 'normative polis' before democracy when the government was timocratical and Athens was an early agrarian polis; and then continues his article to emphasize the fifth and fourth centuries BC during the political reforms and the emergence of democracy as the main form of government. With continuous war and battles being fought, the Athenian farmers gained profits because of "greater opportunity for theft" (301). Hanson pulls from the fragmented works of an anonymous Oxyrhynchus Historian to support his plundering claim. The historian writes that "the Athenian countryside was 'the most lavishly furnished' in Greece" (300). Hanson draws to the conclusion that "Attic farmers in the fifth century BC often took rural property from conquered subjects and then re–employed it on their own farms" (301). With money being the new standard of privilege, as stated earlier, farmers utilized the lavish material items they plundered to gain economic status within their culture. Another policy that Attic farmers enjoyed under democracy was the "introduction of pay for hoplite military service... sometime around the mid–fifth century BC" (301). Hanson notes that Athenian farmers "were discovering the attractions democracy had to offer" (301) since compensation was nonexistent during agrarian warfare because it was a necessity to fight to save the farm. The burden of battle shifted between the old regime, where the agrarian community faced battle alone, and the new regime, where the burden was on the entire polis to fight for each other's land (301). There also people who supported democracy, because they think it will help free the citizens from the rule of tyrants and long. To make Athens democracy stronger they have to bring people together. First, Athenian democracy should be about every citizen and how they should take part in Athens democracy. For example, many people who are part of Athenian democracy are the ones who owned parts of the land. "The word democracy had not yet been invented, the foundations has been laid" (D#7). This shows that, only the rich are part of the Athenian democracy and not all the poor citizens were part of Athenian democracy. Many of the poor citizens didn't receive the rights they deserved. In conclusion, not all of the citizens of Athen were a part of the Athenian democracy. Second, Athens democracy is about how no one should be above the law. For example, if you commit a crime, then you should get the punishment for your crime. "... required to pay the penalty: He had to settle his private affairs within ten days and to depart from the city for ten years" (D#6). Alternative Two. Pg. 92) This quotation perfectly summarizes Athenian democracy, a system in which all citizens had a say in affecting their daily lives. This is a contrast to Spartan oligarchy, which limited power to a small group of men. Athenian democracy encouraged citizens to use their voice and consequently make an impact on their society. Since Athenians could help make decisions, they were more pleased with the outcome. Also, with a more diverse range of men voting, they were able to use the opinions of different classes, instead of strictly aristocrats who used to hold all the power and still did in Sparta. Undoubtedly, with the power Athenian democracy gave to its people, they were better served. Since Athenian citizens had the power to impact their government, their values were displayed in the decisions that were made. Athens enjoyed spreading their culture to different places, learning from others, and trading for expensive items, which is shown by this excerpt. "Then the greatness of our city brings it about that all the good things from all over the world flow into us, so that to us it seems just as natural to enjoy foreign goods as our own local products..." (Dale. Civilizations in History. Alternative Two. Pg. 92) Athens was a nation that was willing to adapt, whereas Sparta did not want to change whatsoever, which is clearly presented by this quotation. "They were suspicious of anything foreign, including trade, and they resisted change of any kind." (Dale. Civilizations in History. Alternative One.) One of the things similar is that the people do not know what was happening in other places of the world. They are only concerned about their own lives. One thing that is different is that The 5th Wave is taking place in a post–apocalypse world while Fahrenheit 451 is taking place in a world in the future where technology is very advanced. Another thing that is similar is that the government did not tell the people what was going on. Something that is different about this is that the people in Fahrenheit 451 did not care that the government was not telling them anything. In the 5th Wave, the people actually cared. • 78. Disadvantages Of Millenniums The Millenniums are being defined as the group of individuals that are born between the years of 1982 and 2000 approximately. They are also the generation that is considered "Generation Y." Millenniums are not their parents and grandparents that believed it so very important as an adult to settle down and get married. The previous generation was always about finding a career and settling down for stability. The stability angle is the getting a career and putting down roots by securing a home. The "Y" generation is the generation that has a single parenting and less stability than the generations prior. The "Y" generation has had the ability to live with the "helicopter down" parents that hoover over them and short the ability to grow and learn. Millenniums are not making purchases of homes because they are still living at home with their parents. The fact that most of the "Y generation" fail to launch out of their parents' home to gain the career and stability could be through the concept of the parents limiting the growth of their children by being the "helicopter parent." The "helicopter parent" hovers over the child to the point that they are not able to make decisions in a form.
