The History of Southwest Airlines
Introduction
The Southwest is a leading American air service and is the largest low–priced service provider with
the base in Texas. The airline came to existence in 1976 and its name became Southwest in 1971.
According to an overview in 2014 the company has around 45k employees and around 3.4k flights
are operated each day. Mostly Southwest Airlines uses 737s, except in 1970s and 1980s, when it
rented some 727s from BI airlines. Over the last couple of years southwest is facing certain logistic
issues, which is not only damaging its reputation but also affecting its business strategies (Gittell,
2004).
Southwest airline is the biggest airline in the United States carrying more than. It is the sixth largest
US airline by revenue and maintains the second largest fleet of airliners of all commercial airlines
worldwide. On July 12, 2008, Southwest operated approximately 3,500 daily flights. The airline is
based in 2702 Love Field Drive Texas, adjacent to the airport "Love Field".

Embarking and Disembarking
3.8.3 Embarking and disembarking
In several cases the court determined the place of location by taking into consideration if the
passengers were exposed to the hazard inherent in aviation operations. It has been taken also into
consideration if the passenger was under the charge of control of a carrier or his agent. According to
Godfroid, the primary test should be whether the passenger was under the control of the carrier or
his agent, in addition the activity should be related to an activity of aviation. An injured passenger
who did not board, but is still in the terminal will be considered outside article 17, the same applies
to a passenger who had reached the baggage claim area. Article 17 applies when a passenger was
injured on the steps of the terminal building on his way to board the aircraft and also when a
passenger was injured on the apron by a baggage transport.
According to the U.K. Courts it is important to relate an accident to a specific flight, when cases
about embarking or disembarking are being solved. It is also important to consider the passenger's
location and if the passenger was about to enter or was actually entering the airplane it would create
an article 17 accident. In case an accident occurred elsewhere in the terminal, a consideration have
to made whether the passenger was required to be there by the carrier.
In another case a passenger in a wheelchair was injured while being transported up the terminal's
escalator by the carrier's

The Pioneers Of Aviation By Orville And Wilbur Wright...
Orville and Wilbur Wright brothers were the pioneers of aviation since its first flight performed in
1903 in a heavier than the air machine in North Carolina; but it was not until World War II, when in–
flight travel achieved a prominent place in other countries, prompted the beginning of a new way of
communication and a new business.
When the reorganization of the airlines in operation occurred, the network of scheduled flights from
fixed itineraries comprehensive and competitive race began in improving the services they offered,
such as trained attendants to deal effectively with passengers during flights. Leaning on the technical
evolution and the race of modernization and progress, service airline has managed to prevail and
win the battle brilliantly, that is why every day many services are efficient such as reservation
systems, baggage handling, documentation, and others. Commercial aviation is an activity that is
created from the need to transport people and goods, hence airlines became an option as business.
The Boeing Company was a small military contractor and was one of the best trading companies in
the world, because it's advanced technology that was used in warplanes, then those advances
changes were incorporated into commercial aviation.
The U.S. airline industry is one of the most varied and active in the world, even though the latest
years this industry have been struggling to make revenues and profits. Thus, among all the regulated

History
Southwest Airlines was incorporated on March 15, 1967, in Texas as Air Southwest Co. by Rollin
King and Herb Kelleher. At the time, Southwest Airlines had a fleet of three Boeing 737 aircraft
serving Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Southwest Airlines Founder Herb Kelleher had faith that
by operating within Texas, the airline could escape from federal regulation. According to SWA, on
February 21, 1968, Braniff, Trans–Texas and Continental Airlines attained a provisional restraining
order from a District Court forbidding the Texas Aeronautics Commission (TAC) from delivering
SWA Certificate. On May 13, 1970, the Texas Supreme Court unanimously votes to overturn the
lower courts ' findings and rules in favor of Air Southwest (SWA, History by Date, (1)).
Conclusively, on December 07, 1970, the United States Supreme Court denies appeal by Braniff and
Texas International (TI) of Texas Supreme Court decision (1).
Eventually, Air Southwest Co. changed its name to Southwest Airlines. On that same day, SWA was
offered three 737–200s by Boeing. During 1971, southwest airlines began scheduled flights from
Dallas to Houston and San Antonio with a $20 one–way fares. In Addition, on July 09, 1972,
southwest introduced "Executive Class Service" fares with a fare increase and complimentary
cocktails. On the other hand, on October 01, 1974, SWA introduced a new uniform for their Flight
Attendant, consisting of an orange blouse with white dots, an orange hot pants and an aviator

In 1966 the EEOC issued regulations that provided "that employers must afford accommodation
unless it would cause a serious inconvenience to the conduct of business." In 1967, this regulation
was further refined to read "undue hardship on the conduct of the employer 's business." These
regulations were quickly challenged as was the EEOC authority to issue such regulations. (Foltin &
Standish, 2004, p. 3). Finally, in 1972 Congress amended Title VII adding a new section 701(j),
which reads as follows:
The term "religion" includes all aspects of religious observance and practice, as well as belief,
unless an employer demonstrates that he is unable to reasonably accommodate to an employee 's or
perspective employee 's religious observance or practice without undue hardship on the conduct of
the employer 's business.
This still left the defining of the terminology "reasonably accommodate" and undue hardship" to the
legal system.
Case Law – Trans World Airlines, Inc. v. Hardison
Background
In this case, Larry G. Hardison was an employee with TWA working as a clerk in the Stores
Department at its Kansas City base. This was an essential role in the Kansas City operation as the
Stores Department must operate 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. This was also a union operation
and Hardison was subject to a seniority system. Hardison was hired by TWA in June 1967 and in the
spring of 1968 he began to study the religion known as the Worldwide Church of God.

The Most Comprehensive Global Route Network
The combined United Continental Holdings competes on the basis of having what it terms "the most
comprehensive global route network", modern planes, and "an industry–leading loyalty program"
(UnitedContinentalHoldings.com, 2012). The merger between two struggling airlines was
announced in 2010, and the United brand is going to be the one that is most prominent going
forward. There have recently been some minor implementation problems in unwinding the
Continental name (Martin, 2012).
While it is difficult, to some extent, to evaluate the success of a merger that is only just now entering
its final implementation phases, it is known that the objective of that merger was to use the larger
route network to attract more business, and that the combined airline would also extract cost savings
as the result of increased operational efficiency. The airline had struggled in 2009, with its sales
declining, but it recovered in 2010 and 2011. Sales last year were $33.678 billion, up from $21.068
billion the year before. In the past two years, the company has turned a profit, going from $253
million in net income in FY2010 to $840 million in net income in FY2011. Some of this
improvement may stem from the impact of the merger. However, the airline industry is highly
cyclical, and the past two years have represented economic improvement. Likewise, the losses the
company faced in FY2008 and FY2009 were as much the result of the economic downturn as they
were internal business factors.

"The short–term liquidity ratios are used in the evaluation of short–term liquidity to convert current
assets into cash in order to reduce the financial obligations of the company as they become due"
(Covee 2010 pg.45). These ratios are particularly significant to the creditors and potential lenders of
a company because they determine the ability of that company to meet current payments of a debt.
[pic] Southwest's current ratio is 1.29% with JetBlue following closely behind with a 1.25% current
ratio, as compared to industry average of .80% one can see Southwest's ability to repay debt exceeds
the industry average. The quick ratios have a difference of .17% between Southwest's 1.13% and
JetBlue's .96%, compared to the industry average of .63% the difference is almost 50%. This equates
to Southwest's ability to pay short term obligations without relying on the sale of its inventories,
which also means they are in good liquid condition. Efficiency Collection period is a key measure of
accounts receivable quality. Increases in the average collection period of receivables may indicate
increases in acceptance of poor credit risks or less energetic collection efforts. Inventory turnover

Southwest Airlines Co., originally named Air Southwest Co., was founded March 16th, 1967. Today
their headquarters is located in Dallas, TX and they employ over 46,000 people. Southwest Airlines
current fleet size is 689 Boeing 737s. The currently operate out of 97 different destinations and
continues to expand their service area. The first flights of this airline company only flew within the
state of Texas. Their reason for having a limited flying area was to avoid federal regulations.
Competitors such as Continental Airlines, Trans–Texas and Braniff, were not in agreement with the
geographical area in which Southwest was choosing to flying. These three airlines began legal
action against Air Southwest Co. claiming that their actions were no legal. After a few years of court
litigation, the U.S. Supreme Court stood in agreement with Air Southwest Company and supported
them in keeping their service flights within Texas. Since the airlines establishment, they have
continued to see record growth year after year. With strategic planning, as recent as 2011, Southwest
Airlines purchased Air Tran Airways. It has been because of their mission, objectives, tactics, and

How Did The Collapse Of The Soviet Union
The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, also known as the USSR, brought with it a number of
downfalls. This was especially true with regard to businesses that had originated or had ties to the
country, which had been divided into 15 separate republics then. One of the organizations that
suffered dearly with the fall of the Soviet Union was the startup aviation company known as Baltia
Air Lines.
With communism gone, and a rush to put democracy in place, Russia's economy and the everyday
life of its inhabitants were falling apart. In a time where many countries were experiencing growth,
Russia's GDP began to suffer. For Baltia Air Lines, this was a huge setback.
In 1991, the United States Department of Transportation selected three new airlines to conduct
flights from the United States to Russia, with Baltia Air lines joining the ranks of Pan American
World Airways, American Airlines, and Trans World Airlines. Of the three newly appointed airlines,
Baltia had "a far superior" proposal than that of Trans World Airways, as claimed by the U.S.
Department of Transportation. Unfortunately, a number of setbacks led Baltia Air Lines to place its
aviation plans on hold for the time being. Nonetheless, this did not stop Baltia from pursuing its

A Wicked Genius Essay
A Wicked Genius An immeasurable number of brutal casualties around the world have been caused
by foreign affairs, extreme ideologies, or even the occasional unfaithful spouse. Being able to infer a
suitable conclusion to the downfall of flight TWA 800 had been a pressing issue for American
officials. Many conclusions were proposed and rejected, elaborate theories were created and
squandered, but one man should stand out like a sore thumb. Ramzi Yousef, the bomb making
mastermind of Al–Qaeda, might have had more to do with the unfortunate incident than the
mainstream might believe. A man of many identities, Yousef was at the pinnacle of America's most
wanted terrorist list and he was the MVP of Al–Qaeda. Dubbed the Mozart of terror by Peter Lance,
Yousef grew up in the Kuwaiti oil city of Fuhayhil and acquired his engineering degree in the
United Kingdom. Shortly afterwards, Yousef left for the early al–Qaeda training camps and learned
the ins and outs of building improvised explosive devices. Osama bin Laden began to take notice of
his bomb making expertise and recruited him to be his chief point man on terror. Bin Laden and
Yousef began their plots of destruction early in the 1990s, with plans to bomb the WTC amongst
other large icons. As bloodthirsty and conniving as al–Qaeda were, it is not a shock to consider
placing the responsibility for the fall of TWA–800 on Yousef and al–Qaeda, they had the skills and

The objective of the airline is to focus on the consumer by providing maximum customer care whilst
simultaneously being known as one of the world's most responsible airlines. In this regard, the
company introduced 'one destination', which is a corporate responsibility program designed to raise
awareness on environmental issues promoting diversity and inclusion of minorities in the
workplace. This helps create a corporate culture that understands the varying needs of consumers
from different ethnic backgrounds (British Airways, 2014).
To achieve this objective, the company set several long–term and short–term goals that promoted
accountability, transparency and corporate citizenship whilst creating a flexible environment that
responded effectively to consumer preferences. Table 1 illustrates the company's 5 main short–term

Delta Airlines : The Largest Operating Airline
Delta airlines is the oldest operating airline in the United States, one of the five remaining legacy
carriers, and a founding member of the SkyTeam airline alliance. It was founded as a crop dusting
service company in 1924 in Macon, Georgia. Since its early years Delta airlines has gone through all
the regulation changes from early years of commercial aviation to recent years, and has been highly
influenced by the government laws.
The first major piece of legislation created by Congress related to aviation industry was The Air
Mail Act of 1925, also known as Kelly Act. This act gave an opportunity for airlines to profit from
operating mail services, and Delta got involved in the business. In 1927, Delta extended dusting

and mechanics.
In 1968, due to continued wave of U.S. air carrier hijackings, including aboard Delta airlines
aircraft, FAA announced that specially trained FAA safety inspectors or "sky marshals" had begun
boarding Florida–bound airline flights. However, the effort was unrewarding, hijackings continued
to occur and a total of twelve airliners and six general aviation aircraft were diverted to Cuba during
the same year ("FAA chronology", 2017).
On October 24 1978 President Carter signed the airline deregulation act for years the airline industry
was rigidly regulated by the government. By 1978 the general public and many government officials
had decided that this system was no longer effective and it was time for the airlines to be free of
government regulation. This one piece of legislation would turn the airline industry in a whole new
direction by radically changing the business for both the consumer and those working within it.
Before deregulation, the Civil Aeronautics Board regulated both the airlines routes and the ticket
prices. With deregulation, any domestic airline that was supposed to fit, willing, and able by the

identifying with a different religion, with back stories that I will never ever get to hear. Walking into
this airport, I feel as light as a feather. I have so many options of flight within one airport, even
though my plane ticket only lists one final destination. The desire to explore the world is prominent
in both my heart and mind. I want to see the different ranges of people within different areas and see
the beauties of different sections of the world. I clear through TSA and suddenly, the whole world is
open to me; from the simple little Dunkin Donuts greeting me to the different terminals leading to
planes ready to fly thousands of people all over the place, I feel as if I am ready to see everything.
The bright lights leading around the halls and to the gates accompany us, and I just want to get on a
plane and take off. I dream of seeing the world, whether I have other people with me or not, and I
dream of the possibilities that lay before me. Seeing the different people and listening to them talk
about their lives makes me want to learn and see more. In New York, I feel limited. I want to break

Congress since at least 1999, allows passengers the option of getting off delayed planes after 3 hours
on the ground, and requires airlines to provide adequate food, water, temperature controls,
ventilation and working toilets to accommodate a 3–hour delay" (FlyersRights.org, 2013). Due to
Kate Hanni's persistence her congressman Democrat Mike Thompson introduced legislation which
would force airlines to allow passengers to deplane after 3 hours on the tarmac. In 2007 Democrat
Senator Barbra Boxer and Republican Senator Olympia Snowe joined in bipartisanship to introduce
S.678 IS –– Airline Passenger Bill of Rights Act of 2007 this bill's intent is "To amend title 49,
United States Code, to ensure air passengers have access to necessary services while on a grounded
air carrier and are not unnecessarily held on a grounded air carrier before or after a flight, and for
other purposes" (The Library of Congress, 2013). The major changes to Title 49 of the U.S. Code
include provisions of food and water to the passengers and also the right to deplane. In 2009,

2.0 BACKGROUND
2.1 FLIGHT PATH
On July 17, 1996, about 8:19 p.m. eastern US time, a Boeing 747–131, operated as Trans World
Airlines Flight 800 (TWA 800) took off and was bound for Charles De Gaulle International Airport
(Paris, France). TWA 800 was heading northeasterly, roughly paralleled the southeastern coastline of
Long Island (Phillips, 1996, p27).
The weather at John F. Kennedy International Airport was clear with 25 mi. Visibility, temperature
was 71F and winds from the southwest at 4 kt.
At about 8:28 p.m., when the aircraft at an altitude of 10,000 ft. the aircraft accelerated from 250 kt.
To 300 kt. which indicated the airspeed was for the en route climb segment. After 13 minutes into
the flight, air controllers lost radar contact with the Boeing 747–131. The Center Wing Tank (CWT)

Southwest Airlines research paper
Overview and Background.
Southwest Airlines, since the beginning has struggle and fight to get in the airline business. Starting
with Dallas, Texas. Southwest had to fight to stay at Love field airport, when all the airlines moved
to the new Airport of Dallas–Fort worth International airport. Winning this battle gave Southwest
the opportunity to get all the customers they wanted, from the near downtown airport, instead of
driving 15 miles for the new airport, pay for expensive parking and having to arrive one hour earlier.
However the other airlines did not like it, like American Airlines and Braniff International. They
would have to pay higher fees for use of the new airport and Southwest Airline did not. The other

Other airlines like United trained the flight attendants for First Class and Business class, besides
economy, their training takes longer and their uniforms are more expensive. Southwest uniforms are
less expensive and they only have one class, economy. Their flight attendants are also trained to
clean the plane on turn around. Other airlines have a cleaning crew that gets into the plane and clean
it while the flight attendants are resting; however some airlines have adopted this plan since 9/11.
This has saved Southwest salaries on each city for cleaning. Only on cities that the planes stay
overnight they have a special cleaning crew that gives the plane a complete service. (Thompson, A
& Gamble, J. (2010)
The idea of having only one type of equipment has given great savings, comparing with other
airlines that have different aircrafts and need mechanics specialized on each different aircraft and to
have different kinds of plane pieces of maintenance according to each plane. Southwest has all his
mechanics highly trained for only one kind of aircraft and the maintenance inventory of their pieces
for maintenance in their planes are all the same and this means that they do not need millions of
dollars in equipment and train mechanics for each different type of aircraft. After 9/11, Southwest
shines like a start as the only airline that do not lose money in 2001 or 2002 and the only airline that
did not

History of British Airways
Company History:
British Airways PLC is the largest international airline in the world. It is based at Heathrow Airport
in London, the busiest international airport in the world, and has a global flight network through
such partners as USAir in the United States, Qantas in Australia, and TAT European Airlines in
France. Via its own operations and those of its alliance partners, British Airways serves 95 million
passengers a year using 441 airports in 86 countries and more than 1,000 planes.
British Airways ' earliest predecessor was Aircraft Transport & Travel, Ltd., founded in 1916. On
August 25, 1919 this company inaugurated the world 's first scheduled international air service, with

Britain 's primary supplier of flying boats, the Short Company, developed a new model, designated
the C–class, with 24 seats and weighing 18 tons. Since it had an increased range and flew 145 miles
per hour, it was able to simply bypass "politically difficult areas." The Short C–class went into
service in October 1936. A year later Imperial Airways made its first trans–Atlantic crossing with a
flying boat equipped with extra fuel tanks. However, it was Pan Am, with more sophisticated and
updated Boeing airplanes, which was first to schedule a regular trans–Atlantic service.
Imperial Airways was formed with the intention of being Britain 's "chosen instrument" for overseas
air service. On its European services, however, Imperial was competing with the British Continental
airlines and an aggressive newcomer called British Airways. British Airways was created in October
1935 by the merger of three smaller airline companies. Three months later the company acquired a
fleet of Lockheed 10 Electras which were the fastest airplanes yet available. The competition from
British Airways threatened the "chosen instrument" so much that in November 1937 a Parliamentary
committee proposed the nationalization and merger of Imperial and British Airways. When the
reorganization was completed on November 24, 1939, the British Overseas Airways Corporation
(BOAC) was formed.
The creation of BOAC was overshadowed

The Travel And Hospitality Industry
The travel industry has evolved though history. As the travel industry developed and grew, so did the
use of Management Information Systems. Today, the travel industry is global, and technology is
capable of processing, storing, and facilitating travel with a large amount of flexibility and in a short
amount of time. However, the travel industry was not always this way. As the industry has adapted,
challenges have been overcome through the advancement of management information systems. In
the beginning, travel services were provided by places like inns, but there were no systems for mass
travel or mass accommodation. The early stages of the organized travel and hospitality industry
began in the 1400s. Legislations began to pass in countries such as France and England that made
guest registries mandatory within inns and hotels. This formal documentation was the beginning of
management information systems in the travel industry. After these requirements were introduced,
over 600 inns and hotels were eventually registered in England, mostly located near major
roadways. The first printed guidebooks were developed through this documentation of registration,
using the information for connecting hotels and travelers. Development continued with the
beginning of the industrial revolution in the 1700s and the creation of the railroad. This ushered in
the era of transportation, but changed the nature of travel, as hotels began to develop near city
centers instead of near roadways, and

In terms of financial results, the annual report of both companies show the WestJet is much more
financial healthy than Air Canada. We will look at the ratios for both companies, as financial ratio
analysis provides answers to several questions: is the entity primarily financed by foreign sources of
assets, do the customers pay promptly and in accordance with the contracted agreement, are the
operating costs too high and do they endanger the long–term stability and business performance
(VSBDC, 2004 & Žager, et al. 2012). Ratios are used by outsiders to evaluate the corporation
(earnings/share, P/E ratio) and are used within the corporation to measure such things as efficiency
and effectiveness (Cotts, et al. 2004).
Let's start by looking at Air Canada ratios:
1. Acid Test ratio: FY2014=0.83 – FY2013=0.88
2. Current Ratio: FY2014=0.98 – FY2013=1.03
3. Return on Equity: FY2014=(0.09) – FY2013=(0.01)
4. Debt Ratio: FY2014=110.6% – FY2013= 114.8%
In comparison, here are WestJet's ratios:
1. Acid Test ratio: FY2014=1.10 – FY2013=0.97
2. Current Ratio: FY2014=1.29 – FY2013=1.09
3. Return on Equity: FY2014=0.16 – FY2013=0.17
4. Debt Ratio: FY2014=161% – FY2013= 161%
Looking at the acid test ratio, we see that WestJet has a ratio of over 1.0 in 2014, which is usually
considered satisfactory (Wood, et al. 2013). Air Canada, in contrast, has posted two straight years
under 1.0, which could hint at some cash flow problems.

Delta Airlines : Effect Of Regulation
Abstract
Delta was founded on May 30, 1924, and was known as Huff Daland Dusters. This airline was
mainly used to dust crops and get rid of unwanted insects. A decade later Collet E. Woolman bought
the company and renamed it to Delta Air Services. The company performed their first passenger
flight on June 17, 1929, and it began to grow rapidly due to acquiring of smaller airlines and the
addition of routes (History of Delta Air Lines, 2017). This paper explores how different regulations
affected Delta Airlines throughout its existence, and how the recent regulations might affect the
company in the future. It also includes several big events that affected the aviation industry as a

This service was concluded in 1934 after the "Spoils Conference", when the Post Office granted the
route to American Airlines (Pope, 2009). Delta 's failure in winning a commercial airmail contract
threatened its existence, and the company postponed passenger service. A reprieve came for Delta
soon after the U.S. Congress enacted the Air Mail Act of 1934. Delta received a low–bid contract for
the new airmail service route between Dallas and Charleston, South Carolina, via Atlanta. In the
same year Delta recommenced passenger services ("History of Delta Air Lines", 2017).
Followed by a series of three DC–4 airline accidents in 1947, President Truman appointed a Special
Board of Inquiry on Air Safety. In 1948, CAB adopted rule applying to all airplanes certificated for
a maximum takeoff weight of more than 80,000 pounds. They were required to carry an airman
holding a flight engineer 's certificate. Airmen with a pilot 's or a mechanic 's background could
qualify for the certificate. By the end of 1949, Delta employed pilots with the acquired certification.
In 1968, due to continued wave of U.S. air carrier hijackings, including aboard Delta airlines
aircraft, FAA announced that specially trained FAA safety inspectors or "sky marshals" had begun
boarding Florida–bound airline flights. However, the effort was unrewarding, hijackings continued
to occur and a total of twelve airliners and six general aviation aircraft were diverted to Cuba during
the same year ("FAA

Southwest Airlines is able to pass those savings onto consumers. This creates a unique opportunity
which Southwest Airlines has created for themselves. This is an area which was created by

the current cost of flight as overfares. Overfare is the airline way of saying that a seat is over priced.

The History Of The Airline Industry
The history of the airline industry has proven to be one of the most turbulent and unreliable
industries to date. Many airlines have found ways to succeed, or simply keep their heads above
water, while other companies have not been so lucky. We 've seen legacy airlines such as Pan
American and Trans World Atlantic, who once reigned the industry, fall beyond recovery into
bankruptcy and forced to shut down, while other airlines have become very successful. One airline
that has been able to make air travel a profitable business is Continental Airlines. Continental
Airlines was founded in 1934 as a very prosperous company and over their colorful 64–year history
has experienced both tremendous success and extreme difficulty.
Walter Varney and Louis Mueller originally founded Continental Airlines as Varney Speed Lines.
The concept of their company was to operate airmail and passenger services in the American
Southwest over a route originating from El Paso, Texas, to Pueblo, Colorado. Commencing
operations in the Lockheed Vega, in the first month they carried 860 pounds of mail and 9
passengers. In 1934, Robert F. Six saw an opportunity and bought into the Southwest division of
Varney Speed Lines. Soon after in 1936, Mueller sold 40 percent of the company shares to Robert
Six who then gained control of the company. One year later Six changed the name to Continental
Airlines and moved its headquarters to Denver, Colorado, which would become the airline's central
hub for the next

U.s Airways And American Airlines
On October 17, 2015, two of the largest airlines officially became one after two years of
negotiations. These negotiations came under great scrutiny, whilst pulling one airline out of Chapter
11 bankruptcy. Continuing to use the American Airlines name, U.S Airways and American Airlines
became the largest airline in the world. American Airlines was founded in the 1930's, under the
name of American Airways, after acquiring 80 small airline carriers (Koenig 2011), mainly used for
mail services. Charles Lindbergh was noted as flying the first American Airlines flight, which
carried mail from St. Louis, MO to Chicago, IL (American Airlines 2016). After nearly 10 year of
flying mail, the name was changed to American Airlines, and became the first airline to fly
passengers from New York to Chicago, in a Douglas DC–3; this was the "plane that changed the
entire airline industry, switching revenue sources from mail to passengers (American Airlines 2016).
American Airlines continued to revolutionize passenger flight service, by offering non–stop
transcontinental flights across the United States in 1953. In 1981, American Airlines joined other
major airlines in the hub–and–spoke system, and created their first hub at Dallas/Fort Worth
International Airport, the same location as their headquarters. They expanded to new hubs
throughout the 1980's to other cities throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. In a joint effort

The History of Southwest Airlines
Introduction
The Southwest is a leading American air service and is the largest low–priced service provider with
the base in Texas. It came into existence in 1976 and its name became Southwest in 1971. According
to an overview in 2014 the company has around 45k employees and around 3.4k flights are operated
each day. Mostly Southwest Airlines uses 737s, except in 1970s and 1980s, when it rented some
727s from BI airlines. Over the last couple of years southwest is facing certain logistic issues, which
is not only damaging its reputation but also affecting its business strategies (Gittell, 2004).

Southwest Airlines Merger
BASIC STRATEGY: In order to make up for increasing expenses Southwest needs to expand. My
recommended strategy for Southwest to pursue, is to merge with Air–Tran and expand into areas
where Air–Tran has a heavy presence and Southwest has none. With Southwest having a weak
presence in the southeastern U.S., a key area to expand would be Atlanta's Hartsfield–Jackson
International, which is the busiest airport in the U.S. There is obviously a need for the low air–fare
company at this site. Southwest's unique approach of no extra charge for luggage and extra friendly
service should help Southwest. The merger is estimated to cost Southwest $1.4 billion dollars; Air–
Trans income for 2010 was around $128 million, and along with the 138 new ... Show more content

During the process of the absorption, there will need to be strong communication to the customers to
let them know when exactly changes will be taking place. Updates should be kept daily on
Southwest's website and up–to–date information should be presented to all passengers when
booking flights. Television commercials should be ran (especially around the Atlanta area) showing
newly remodeled planes that once carried AirTran customers and show major improvements
appealing to both vacationers and business travelers. Strong communication on how the AirTran
frequent flyer miles will implemented by Southwest. This could be an area of major conflicts
between Southwest and old loyal AirTran customers, but strong communication could easily prevent
many conflicts.
Shared Values: The unique culture and values of Southwest Airlines has been one of the key factors
of Southwest's success over the years. Southwest's CEO feels that the employees of Southwest are
the company's single greatest strength and most enduring long–term competitive advantage. Getting
AirTran's acquired employees to commit to the shared vision of the company will be another key
implementation lever during the acquisition process. Southwest really values a fun and loving

A Wicked Genius Essay
A Wicked Genius There have been countless unnatural casualties around the world, caused by
foreign affairs, extreme ideologies, or even the occasional unfaithful spouse. Being able to infer an
appropriate conclusion to the downfall of flight TWA 800, had been a pressing issue for the
government for a time. Many conclusions were proposed and rejected, elaborate theories were
created and squandered, but one man should stand out like a sore thumb. Ramzi Yousef, the bomb
making mastermind of Al–Qaeda, might have had more to do with the unfortunate incident than
most might believe. A man of many identities, Yousef was at the pinnacle of America's most wanted
terrorists list and he was the center piece of Al–Qaeda. Dubbed the Mozart of terror by Lance,
Yousef grew up in the Kuwaiti oil city of Fuhayhil and acquired his engineering degree in the
United Kingdom. Shortly afterwards, Yousef left for the early al–Qaeda training camps and learned
the ins and outs of building improvised explosive devices. Osama bin Laden began to take notice of
his bomb making expertise and recruited him to be his chief point man on terror. Bin Laden and
Yousef began their plots of destruction early in the 1990s, with plans to bomb the world trade center.
As bloodthirsty and conniving as al–Qaeda were, it is not surprising to consider placing the
responsibility of the fall of TWA–800 onYousef, they had the skills and resources to accomplish the
deed, but could there not be any other explanation?

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle And The Air Traffic Control System
1. What does the term "UAV" stand for? Indentify two issues that are unique to this emerging
technology. "UAV" stands for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. Two issues that were mentioned in the
course about UAV's were the increase of air traffic and the rights to privacy. There would need to be
another program for UAV's to fit into the air traffic control system or have another program or set of
laws to regulate the routes in which these air vehicles can safely navigate the sky and not harm
people and/or property. Another issue using UAV's is the right to privacy one might invade by flying
over places that is closed to the public. Since air rights are the rights that are also being challenged,
when is it ok to fly over someone's property? Many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Major" disputes seek to create contractual rights within an airline. "Minor" disputes develop from
interpretation or application of agreements covering rates of pay, rules, or working conditions.
"Minor" disputes involve controversies over the definition of an existing collective
bargaining/employment agreement. For example, the issues revolving the reasoning of someone
being fired is considered a "minor" issue, which must be resolved through the Railway Labor Act of
1926 .
3. Describe the benefits and drawbacks of the passenger profiling systems that emerged following
the explosion of TWA Flight 800.
After the TWA 800 accident, the skepticism on profiling became evermore prominent. Following the
explosion of TWA Flight 800, profiling of terrorist became a popular idea in the airline and security
industry. Profiling became prominent towards Arab passengers because of recent trending news
about Civil War in Afghanistan at the time and the conspiracy about TWA 800 being a terrorist
attack. Association's created more in depth x–ray machines and a list of characteristics on what
should security officers should look for when having suspicion of a possible threat from a passenger.
This may offend people and their right to privacy as far as how much do they need to strip down in
order for you to let them through the security gate. However, it can benefit by saving a whole plane
full of people by allowing the

  • 3. Embarking and Disembarking 3.8.3 Embarking and disembarking In several cases the court determined the place of location by taking into consideration if the passengers were exposed to the hazard inherent in aviation operations. It has been taken also into consideration if the passenger was under the charge of control of a carrier or his agent. According to Godfroid, the primary test should be whether the passenger was under the control of the carrier or his agent, in addition the activity should be related to an activity of aviation. An injured passenger who did not board, but is still in the terminal will be considered outside article 17, the same applies to a passenger who had reached the baggage claim area. Article 17 applies when a passenger was injured on the steps of the terminal building on his way to board the aircraft and also when a passenger was injured on the apron by a baggage transport. According to the U.K. Courts it is important to relate an accident to a specific flight, when cases about embarking or disembarking are being solved. It is also important to consider the passenger's location and if the passenger was about to enter or was actually entering the airplane it would create an article 17 accident. In case an accident occurred elsewhere in the terminal, a consideration have to made whether the passenger was required to be there by the carrier. When the reorganization of the airlines in operation occurred, the network of scheduled flights from fixed itineraries comprehensive and competitive race began in improving the services they offered, such as trained attendants to deal effectively with passengers during flights. Leaning on the technical evolution and the race of modernization and progress, service airline has managed to prevail and win the battle brilliantly, that is why every day many services are efficient such as reservation systems, baggage handling, documentation, and others. Commercial aviation is an activity that is created from the need to transport people and goods, hence airlines became an option as business. The Boeing Company was a small military contractor and was one of the best trading companies in the world, because it's advanced technology that was used in warplanes, then those advances changes were incorporated into commercial aviation. • 7. History Of Southwest Airlines By Rollin King And Herb... History Southwest Airlines was incorporated on March 15, 1967, in Texas as Air Southwest Co. by Rollin King and Herb Kelleher. At the time, Southwest Airlines had a fleet of three Boeing 737 aircraft serving Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Southwest Airlines Founder Herb Kelleher had faith that by operating within Texas, the airline could escape from federal regulation. According to SWA, on February 21, 1968, Braniff, Trans–Texas and Continental Airlines attained a provisional restraining order from a District Court forbidding the Texas Aeronautics Commission (TAC) from delivering SWA Certificate. These regulations were quickly challenged as was the EEOC authority to issue such regulations. (Foltin & Standish, 2004, p. 3). Finally, in 1972 Congress amended Title VII adding a new section 701(j), which reads as follows: The term "religion" includes all aspects of religious observance and practice, as well as belief, unless an employer demonstrates that he is unable to reasonably accommodate to an employee 's or perspective employee 's religious observance or practice without undue hardship on the conduct of the employer 's business. The Most Comprehensive Global Route Network The combined United Continental Holdings competes on the basis of having what it terms "the most comprehensive global route network", modern planes, and "an industry–leading loyalty program" (UnitedContinentalHoldings.com, 2012). The merger between two struggling airlines was announced in 2010, and the United brand is going to be the one that is most prominent going forward. There have recently been some minor implementation problems in unwinding the Continental name (Martin, 2012). While it is difficult, to some extent, to evaluate the success of a merger that is only just now entering its final implementation phases, it is known that the objective of that merger was to use the larger route network to attract more business, and that the combined airline would also extract cost savings as the result of increased operational efficiency. The airline had struggled in 2009, with its sales declining, but it recovered in 2010 and 2011. Sales last year were $33.678 billion, up from $21.068 billion the year before. In the past two years, the company has turned a profit, going from $253 million in net income in FY2010 to $840 million in net income in FY2011. Some of this improvement may stem from the impact of the merger. However, the airline industry is highly cyclical, and the past two years have represented economic improvement. Likewise, the losses the company faced in FY2008 and FY2009 were as much the result of the economic downturn as they were internal business factors. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This was especially true with regard to businesses that had originated or had ties to the country, which had been divided into 15 separate republics then. One of the organizations that suffered dearly with the fall of the Soviet Union was the startup aviation company known as Baltia Air Lines. With communism gone, and a rush to put democracy in place, Russia's economy and the everyday life of its inhabitants were falling apart. In a time where many countries were experiencing growth, Russia's GDP began to suffer. For Baltia Air Lines, this was a huge setback. In 1991, the United States Department of Transportation selected three new airlines to conduct flights from the United States to Russia, with Baltia Air lines joining the ranks of Pan American World Airways, American Airlines, and Trans World Airlines. Of the three newly appointed airlines, Baltia had "a far superior" proposal than that of Trans World Airways, as claimed by the U.S. Department of Transportation. A Wicked Genius Essay A Wicked Genius An immeasurable number of brutal casualties around the world have been caused by foreign affairs, extreme ideologies, or even the occasional unfaithful spouse. Being able to infer a suitable conclusion to the downfall of flight TWA 800 had been a pressing issue for American officials. Many conclusions were proposed and rejected, elaborate theories were created and squandered, but one man should stand out like a sore thumb. Ramzi Yousef, the bomb making mastermind of Al–Qaeda, might have had more to do with the unfortunate incident than the mainstream might believe. A man of many identities, Yousef was at the pinnacle of America's most wanted terrorist list and he was the MVP of Al–Qaeda. Dubbed the Mozart of terror by Peter Lance, Yousef grew up in the Kuwaiti oil city of Fuhayhil and acquired his engineering degree in the United Kingdom. Shortly afterwards, Yousef left for the early al–Qaeda training camps and learned the ins and outs of building improvised explosive devices. Osama bin Laden began to take notice of his bomb making expertise and recruited him to be his chief point man on terror. Bin Laden and Yousef began their plots of destruction early in the 1990s, with plans to bomb the WTC amongst other large icons. As bloodthirsty and conniving as al–Qaeda were, it is not a shock to consider placing the responsibility for the fall of TWA–800 on Yousef and al–Qaeda, they had the skills and resources to accomplish the deed, but could there not be any ... Southwest had to fight to stay at Love field airport, when all the airlines moved to the new Airport of Dallas–Fort worth International airport. Winning this battle gave Southwest the opportunity to get all the customers they wanted, from the near downtown airport, instead of driving 15 miles for the new airport, pay for expensive parking and having to arrive one hour earlier. However the other airlines did not like it, like American Airlines and Braniff International. They would have to pay higher fees for use of the new airport and Southwest Airline did not. The other great battle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Other airlines like United trained the flight attendants for First Class and Business class, besides economy, their training takes longer and their uniforms are more expensive. Southwest uniforms are less expensive and they only have one class, economy. Their flight attendants are also trained to clean the plane on turn around. Other airlines have a cleaning crew that gets into the plane and clean it while the flight attendants are resting; however some airlines have adopted this plan since 9/11. This has saved Southwest salaries on each city for cleaning. Only on cities that the planes stay overnight they have a special cleaning crew that gives the plane a complete service. (Thompson, A & Gamble, J. (2010) The idea of having only one type of equipment has given great savings, comparing with other airlines that have different aircrafts and need mechanics specialized on each different aircraft and to have different kinds of plane pieces of maintenance according to each plane. Southwest has all his mechanics highly trained for only one kind of aircraft and the maintenance inventory of their pieces for maintenance in their planes are all the same and this means that they do not need millions of dollars in equipment and train mechanics for each different type of aircraft. After 9/11, Southwest shines like a start as the only airline that do not lose money in 2001 or 2002 and the only airline that did not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Via its own operations and those of its alliance partners, British Airways serves 95 million passengers a year using 441 airports in 86 countries and more than 1,000 planes. Britain 's primary supplier of flying boats, the Short Company, developed a new model, designated the C–class, with 24 seats and weighing 18 tons. Since it had an increased range and flew 145 miles per hour, it was able to simply bypass "politically difficult areas." The Short C–class went into service in October 1936. A year later Imperial Airways made its first trans–Atlantic crossing with a flying boat equipped with extra fuel tanks. However, it was Pan Am, with more sophisticated and updated Boeing airplanes, which was first to schedule a regular trans–Atlantic service. Imperial Airways was formed with the intention of being Britain 's "chosen instrument" for overseas air service. On its European services, however, Imperial was competing with the British Continental airlines and an aggressive newcomer called British Airways. British Airways was created in October 1935 by the merger of three smaller airline companies. Three months later the company acquired a fleet of Lockheed 10 Electras which were the fastest airplanes yet available. The competition from British Airways threatened the "chosen instrument" so much that in November 1937 a Parliamentary committee proposed the nationalization and merger of Imperial and British Airways. When the reorganization was completed on November 24, 1939, the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) was formed. The creation of BOAC was overshadowed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 58. The Travel And Hospitality Industry The travel industry has evolved though history. As the travel industry developed and grew, so did the use of Management Information Systems. Today, the travel industry is global, and technology is capable of processing, storing, and facilitating travel with a large amount of flexibility and in a short amount of time. However, the travel industry was not always this way. As the industry has adapted, challenges have been overcome through the advancement of management information systems. In the beginning, travel services were provided by places like inns, but there were no systems for mass travel or mass accommodation. The early stages of the organized travel and hospitality industry began in the 1400s. Legislations began to pass in countries such as France and England that made guest registries mandatory within inns and hotels. This formal documentation was the beginning of management information systems in the travel industry. After these requirements were introduced, over 600 inns and hotels were eventually registered in England, mostly located near major roadways. The first printed guidebooks were developed through this documentation of registration, using the information for connecting hotels and travelers. Development continued with the beginning of the industrial revolution in the 1700s and the creation of the railroad. This ushered in the era of transportation, but changed the nature of travel, as hotels began to develop near city centers instead of near roadways, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In terms of financial results, the annual report of both companies show the WestJet is much more financial healthy than Air Canada. We will look at the ratios for both companies, as financial ratio analysis provides answers to several questions: is the entity primarily financed by foreign sources of assets, do the customers pay promptly and in accordance with the contracted agreement, are the operating costs too high and do they endanger the long–term stability and business performance (VSBDC, 2004 & Žager, et al. 2012). Ratios are used by outsiders to evaluate the corporation (earnings/share, P/E ratio) and are used within the corporation to measure such things as efficiency and effectiveness (Cotts, et al. 2004). Let's start by looking at Air Canada ratios: 1. Acid Test ratio: FY2014=0.83 – FY2013=0.88 2. Current Ratio: FY2014=0.98 – FY2013=1.03 3. Return on Equity: FY2014=(0.09) – FY2013=(0.01) 4. Debt Ratio: FY2014=110.6% – FY2013= 114.8% In comparison, here are WestJet's ratios: 1. Acid Test ratio: FY2014=1.10 – FY2013=0.97 2. Current Ratio: FY2014=1.29 – FY2013=1.09 3. Return on Equity: FY2014=0.16 – FY2013=0.17 4. Debt Ratio: FY2014=161% – FY2013= 161% Looking at the acid test ratio, we see that WestJet has a ratio of over 1.0 in 2014, which is usually considered satisfactory (Wood, et al. 2013). A reprieve came for Delta soon after the U.S. Congress enacted the Air Mail Act of 1934. Delta received a low–bid contract for the new airmail service route between Dallas and Charleston, South Carolina, via Atlanta. In the same year Delta recommenced passenger services ("History of Delta Air Lines", 2017). Followed by a series of three DC–4 airline accidents in 1947, President Truman appointed a Special Board of Inquiry on Air Safety. In 1948, CAB adopted rule applying to all airplanes certificated for a maximum takeoff weight of more than 80,000 pounds. They were required to carry an airman holding a flight engineer 's certificate. Airmen with a pilot 's or a mechanic 's background could qualify for the certificate. By the end of 1949, Delta employed pilots with the acquired certification. In 1968, due to continued wave of U.S. air carrier hijackings, including aboard Delta airlines aircraft, FAA announced that specially trained FAA safety inspectors or "sky marshals" had begun boarding Florida–bound airline flights. • 70. The History Of The Airline Industry The history of the airline industry has proven to be one of the most turbulent and unreliable industries to date. Many airlines have found ways to succeed, or simply keep their heads above water, while other companies have not been so lucky. We 've seen legacy airlines such as Pan American and Trans World Atlantic, who once reigned the industry, fall beyond recovery into bankruptcy and forced to shut down, while other airlines have become very successful. One airline that has been able to make air travel a profitable business is Continental Airlines. Continental Airlines was founded in 1934 as a very prosperous company and over their colorful 64–year history has experienced both tremendous success and extreme difficulty. Walter Varney and Louis Mueller originally founded Continental Airlines as Varney Speed Lines. The concept of their company was to operate airmail and passenger services in the American Southwest over a route originating from El Paso, Texas, to Pueblo, Colorado. Commencing operations in the Lockheed Vega, in the first month they carried 860 pounds of mail and 9 passengers. In 1934, Robert F. Six saw an opportunity and bought into the Southwest division of Varney Speed Lines. Soon after in 1936, Mueller sold 40 percent of the company shares to Robert Six who then gained control of the company. One year later Six changed the name to Continental Airlines and moved its headquarters to Denver, Colorado, which would become the airline's central hub for the next ... My recommended strategy for Southwest to pursue, is to merge with Air–Tran and expand into areas where Air–Tran has a heavy presence and Southwest has none. With Southwest having a weak presence in the southeastern U.S., a key area to expand would be Atlanta's Hartsfield–Jackson International, which is the busiest airport in the U.S. There is obviously a need for the low air–fare company at this site. Being able to infer an appropriate conclusion to the downfall of flight TWA 800, had been a pressing issue for the government for a time. Many conclusions were proposed and rejected, elaborate theories were created and squandered, but one man should stand out like a sore thumb. Ramzi Yousef, the bomb making mastermind of Al–Qaeda, might have had more to do with the unfortunate incident than most might believe. A man of many identities, Yousef was at the pinnacle of America's most wanted terrorists list and he was the center piece of Al–Qaeda. Dubbed the Mozart of terror by Lance, Yousef grew up in the Kuwaiti oil city of Fuhayhil and acquired his engineering degree in the United Kingdom. Shortly afterwards, Yousef left for the early al–Qaeda training camps and learned the ins and outs of building improvised explosive devices. Osama bin Laden began to take notice of his bomb making expertise and recruited him to be his chief point man on terror. Bin Laden and Yousef began their plots of destruction early in the 1990s, with plans to bomb the world trade center.
