Charles Manson Traits
Traits of a Cult Leader: Charles Manson
In 1969, Charles Manson instructed a few of his cult followers to commit a series of murders in
Beverly Hills. The victims killed by Manson's followers were Abigail Ann Folger, Wojciech
Frykowski, Steven Earl Parent, Sharon Tate Polanski, Jay Sebring and Leno and Rosemary
LaBianca. These murders were highly publicized due to the fascinating story behind them and
people involved. "Helter Skelter" was written by Vincent Bugliosi (a prosecutor during the Manson
trial) and Curt Gentry, and gives a first–person description on the Manson murders and the trial that
followed. In this book, Bugliosi portrays Manson as a delusional, manipulative, and intelligent, three
traits that gave him the ability to commit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He had visions and thoughts that displayed signs of paranoia and insanity. An example of this is
shown in his appearance before his trial; "He completely shaved his head, because, he told
newsmen, 'I am the Devil and the Devil always has a bald head'" (416). Most people, whether
believing in the Devil or not, would consider what Manson said nonsensical. Furthermore, not even
those who believe in the Devil would not assume that he was bald, and would certainly not shave
their heads to have a similar appearance as him. Another example of Manson's delusional behavior
is when he claims that his "Family" are the chosen people. "The chosen people were The Family,
Charlie said. He would lead them to the desert, where they would multiply until they numbered
144,000. He got this, Poston said, 'from reading things in the Bible, from Revelations'" (369). When
Manson read the Bible, he believed that certain prophecies were directed towards him and he was
the one to fulfill them. Charles Manson also believed that the Beatles song "Helter Skelter" was a
prophecy of an apocalyptic war in which racist and non–racist whites essentially exterminate one
another over the poor treatment of

In two days there were seven dead, 169 stab wounds inflicted, and seven gunshot wounds ("CNN").
That was the fate of the victims of Charles Manson's family. Some of the victims were were brutally
stabbed to death, while others were shot dead. Charles Manson never participated in any of these
heinous murders; he manipulated others to commit the murders for him. Charles Manson was a very
manipulative man and is known as the "icon of evil". From his troubled childhood, to his adult life
as leader of the infamous Manson Family, Charles Manson led a life that made him notorious.
Manson's crimes stemmed from his early childhood. He was born on November 12, 1934 in

He ordered four of his family members to go to the Tate house and kill everyone inside; the house
once belonged to Terry Melcher. The first victim to be killed was eighteen year old Steven Parent;
he was shot dead when he noticed the intruders. Three of the four members went into the house and
tied everyone up. Jay Sebring was trying to save Sharon Tate, but was brutally kicked and then shot.
Two girls managed to escape from the house, Frykowski and Folger, but were chased down and
stabbed to death. Folger was stabbed twenty– eight times. Sharon Tate, seven months pregnant, was
stabbed in the stomach. Susan Atkins wrote PIG on the wall in Tate's blood. The next day he ordered
them to the LaBianca residence, and he had them murder everyone in the house. The family was
soon arrested, but for suspicion of vandalizing. The police eventually found out they had also

Informative Essay: The Manson Trial
The Manson trial began in June of 1970. The jury in this case was locked up for the entire trial to
protect the jury from the publicity and the harassment they would face from the public. Five women
and seven men were selected to be on the jury with ages spanning from twenty–five to seventy–
three. One of the jury members was a retired deputy sheriff.
The prosecutor of this case was Vincent Bugliosi. Bugliosi's opening statement described Manson a
man "Who would refer to himself as Jesus Christ", he "was a killer who cleverly masqueraded
behind the common image of a hippie that of being peace loving." Manson's defense made sure that
The Family were well connected. They did this by having Manson communicate with his followers

To this day, Manson receives mail in prison from young people wanting to join the family, and gets
more mail than any other convict in the american prison system. Manson still remains relevant in
our culture, with movies, documentaries, plays, and operas written about him. The popular rock
band Guns 'n' Roses has also performed many of his songs. The reason Manson remains so relevant
is because of the high profile victims he planned, including many celebrities and even President
Ford. In the minds of the average american alive at the time, Manson has become a metaphor for
pure evil, equivocal to the devil himself. Today, almost every extremist and hate mongering group in
america, from the clan to the neo–nazis, have embraced Manson's philosophy and hailed him as a
saint. While in prison, Manson has been charged with almost every conceivable crime, from treason
to marijuana possession. Manson has refused to attend his last two parole hearings after the board
informed him that he would not be allowed to attend without handcuffs. The majority of the Mason
family is still in prison on a list of charges that seemingly goes on forever. There are a few who have
either served their sentences or have earned parole, and continue actively advertising and serving the
family. The tactics have changed but the message is still the same, web pages and blogs have been

Manson In the summer of August, 1969, free love reigned and cries of protest against the Vietnam
War could be heard throughout the streets of America. It seemed to most that this era, filled with the
ideals of hippies and psychedelic media, would never end. However, the era seemed to come to an
abrupt halt on the night of August 9th, when five innocent people were horribly slain, including
pregnant actress Sharon Tate. These murders would be followed by another set, the following night.
This time it would be Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, wealthy grocery chain owners. Though the
murders were at first unsolved, Charles Manson and four women, who were a part of his cult–like
"family," were accused, in December of that year, and put on trial for ... Show more content on

This movie follows the entire Tate–LaBianca case from the discovery of the first murder, to the day
that Manson and his followers were declared guilty. The movie follows the case with an omniscient
point of view, mainly focusing on the point of view of the leading prosecutor, Vincent Bugliosi.
Occasionally, the viewer receives information Bugliosi does not have, by switching to the viewpoint
of a Family member. The film accurately displays most historical facts, including an in depth
explanation of what Charlie led the Family to believe; killing was a form of love, because they were
simply setting a soul free, and that Charlie was Jesus in the flesh. The amount of violence in the
movie is not depicted as it was in real life. This is because showing true–to–life, graphic images of
the murders was not appropriate for television at that time. This does not change the overall
effectiveness of the movie, as the actors do a good job portraying their horror at the

Case Study of Charles Manson Essay
Charles Manson is notoriously connected to the brutal border of Sharon Tate and other Hollywood
residents. Born Charles Milles Maddox to sixteen year old Kathleen Maddox, Charles was born into
mayhem. Kathleen was an alcoholic and a prostitute; she was not very accepting of her son and
showed him no love. Kathleen married William Mason and quickly that marriage dissolved.
Fighting for his mother's attention Charles left his home and lived on the streets. Manson began to
do petty crime to get by. Charles Manson spent about half of his life in prison; he was noted for
being a model prisoner. In 1955 Charles got married to a seventeen year old and moved to
California. She became pregnant and soon after Manson began his life of crime, ... Show more

Finally we look at the sociocultural perspective that focuses on the relationship between social
behavior and culture. The social behavior that he exhibited while moving between relationships and
imprisonment was magnified when The Beatles came out with Helter Skelter.
The two perspectives that seem to best explain the life of Charles Manson are sociocultural and
behavioral. The behavioral perspective represents learned behaviors. At an early age Manson was
around drugs, drinking, and prostitution. Naturally Manson learned that these things were ok. His
mother was a prostitute that wanted nothing to do with her son; she also had a drug problem.
Manson grew up in and out of prison and developed a drug and alcohol problem. Manson could not
have a functioning relationship, his first wife left him due to him being in and out of jail. Manson
second wife was a prostitute and divorced Manson after he was arrested for pimping, stealing, and
conning. After being released from prison Manson headed to San Francisco where he played guitar.
Manson began to develop followers. Manson developed a need for followers, he and his followers
moved to a ranch and soon it became a cult compound for "the family." The consequences of
Manson's actions were reinforced each time he was thrown into prison but let right back out, or each
time he was allowed probation. He was able to commit the crimes knowing he would just be back in
jail and shortly

Manson: 1951 To Natural Bridge Honor Camp
On a psychiatrist's recommendation, Manson was transferred in October 1951 to Natural Bridge
Honor Camp, a minimum security institution.[4]:137–146 His aunt visited him and told
administrators she would let him stay at her house and would help him find work. He had a parole
hearing scheduled for February 1952. However, in January, he was caught raping a boy at
knifepoint. He was transferred to the Federal Reformatory in Petersburg, Virginia, where he
committed a further "eight serious disciplinary offenses, three involving homosexual acts", and then
to a maximum security reformatory at Chillicothe, Ohio, where he was expected to stay until his
release on his 21st birthday in November 1955. Good behavior led to an early release in May 1954,

After a psychiatric evaluation, he was given five years' probation. His subsequent failure to appear
at a Los Angeles hearing on an identical charge filed in Florida resulted in his March 1956 arrest in
Indianapolis. His probation was revoked; he was sentenced to three years' imprisonment at Terminal
Island, San Pedro, California.[4]:137–146
While Manson was in prison, Rosalie gave birth to their son Charles Manson Jr. During his first year
at Terminal Island, Manson received visits from Rosalie and his mother, who were now living
together in Los Angeles. In March 1957, when the visits from his wife ceased, his mother informed
him Rosalie was living with another man. Less than two weeks before a scheduled parole hearing,
Manson tried to escape by stealing a car. He was subsequently given five years probation, and his
parole was denied.[4]:137–146

Charles Manson once said "You know, a long time ago being crazy meant something, nowadays
everyone is crazy." Charles Manson was the man who brought fear into Los Angeles by
brainwashing people to become part of his cult and together they formed "The Family" and killed 9
innocent people. During the Manson Murders many of the people in Los Angeles did not feel quite
safe due to the fact that these killings were random and many felt as if anybody could be the next
victim. Charles Manson was born on November 12th, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the son of

The Family consisted mainly of Susan Atkins, Leslie Van Houten, Patricia Krenwinkel, Charles
"Tex" Watson, Bobby Beausoleil, Mary Brunner, and Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme. Manson's motive
to begin killing all started when he had told the family "Helter Skelter" was coming, Helter Skelter
was the uprising of a racial war between the blacks and the whites. Manson would facilitate this war
by killing the whites and implicating the African–American community with various acts.
(crimemuseum.org) Charles Manson's first killing involved Gary Hinman, he was a very close
friend of Charles Manson and allowed Manson and members of the family to stay at his house
instead of staying at the Spahn Ranch. During this time Manson was having trouble with money
with a guy named Crowe. Manson shot Crowe under the impression that he was part of the Blank
Panthers, however Crowe did not die from the shot and Manson feared revenge and left.
(law2.umkc.edu) Manson was in desperate need of money and soon later heard from a family
member that Gary Hinman had gotten money from an inheritance. Charles Manson sent Bobby
Beausoleil, Mary Brunner, and Susan Atkins to pay Hinman a visit and tell Hinman to hand over the
money. Gary Hinman was very uncooperative and was held hostage for a couple of days. Manson
finally came in and sliced Hinmans left ear, Hinman was stabbed twice in the chest and in the blood

Sickest Cult Murderer: Charles Manson
Charles Manson is one of the sickest cult murderer in the United States. He was often known to
rebel since he was younger, as said by Paul Watkins. By the age of thirty–two he had been in and out
of reformatories and jails plenty of times. It started off as burglaries for him to pay for a place to
stay, then it started advancing according to Susan Atkins. When he went to the juvenile detention
center he escaped after just one day. This was only the start of his adventures.
He was later recaptured and sent to another place, which he escaped five days after his arrival. This
was done with a partner in crime whom he had committed many burglaries with. This got him
caught once again and started the chain of even more burglaries and escaping says Vincent Bugliosi.
He never had anyone to actually care for him so it didn't affect many people. The only people he
was hurting at this time were his burglary victims, which he sometimes went to armed ... Show more

Although, he knew his way around town and knew a couple people to get favors from. Charlie Gillis
said this included many girls who posted his bail and claimed they were in love with him to get him
out of trouble. The court would believe it and next thing you know, he is out and free again causing
nothing but trouble. But he wasn't killing anybody, so what was the harm?
Perhaps it was the times he got away for things and got addicted to the adrenaline rush. This started
his own little rebellion of creating a cult. As he built his cult full of more women than men, he
started to plot claimed Charlie Gillis. He had various insane predictions, but only few did he follow
through with. For example, he was convinced that a huge war was going to break out between black
and white people, while his "family" would wait it out underground and rise when it was over. This
way he could take over control of everything and be in charge stated Charlie

Charles Manson was born on November 12, 1934, in Cincinnati, Ohio. In the late 1960's, Manson
founded a murderous cult named 'The Manson Family'. The Manson Family of around 100
followers committed many horrifying acts of terror around San Francisco. By using the power of
lies in influencing his followers to believe that he was Jesus and many other things, Manson
controlled them criminally and spiritually. Some of the most significant murders taken place by the
cult were the stabbing of Sharon Tate and the execution of Leno LaBianca and his wife. This was
the beginning of his mass murders that took place by The Manson Family Cult.

He and his followers were arrested in a remote location called Bakers Ranch for suspicion of auto
theft, but some already charged for the murders.
Hypothetically, Manson's lies could've stopped prior to the murders. If someone said no to killing
someone, he may have taken it into his own hands, robbing him of his power to influence. This
could've taken place if his followers didn't have the drugs that essentially brainwashed them. He
knew that once he got them all brainwashed and on his side, he could easily make up lies, and
instruct them to do whatever he wanted.
As said already, Manson was eventually arrested for his doings and was charged with the death
sentence. It was changed, and he was charged for the murders and sentenced for life in prison. He
was in prison for about 46 years before he died in 2017 of natural causes.
The most known follower of Manson, Susan Atkins, was sentenced for life in prison for after telling

The 1960s were a volatile era of social and political turbulence – a majority of which was centered
in culturally progressive areas (San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, etc.). In 1969, Charles
Manson, an American criminal, rose to infamy with his orchestration of seven gruesome murders in
Los Angeles, California. What's even more shocking than the murder scenes, was the fact that
Manson did not perpetrate any of the murders himself, but instead convinced others to commit the
crimes for him: the murderers had been done by the Manson Family, a cult Manson himself had
created. Manson's total control over his followers marked him as a manipulative and cunning
psychopath, however the development of his cult was largely due to the 1960s ... Show more content

In addition, these criminals have affected our public perception to view them as popular figures
rather than for the violent acts they have committed (Schmid 4). By buying their merchandise,
watching their movies and treating them as celebrities, society no longer sees the killer – they see
the mask, hence alternating our perception to judge if a killer is 'good' or 'bad'. That is to say, serial
killers are psychopaths that shouldn't be idolized. Although some serial killers react to social
changes, society has a reaction to all serial culture.
In order to understand how serial killers are affected by social changes, one must understand their
psyche. A serial killer is "sexually motivated but the underlying reason is power" (Newton 197). The
killer wants power over his victims. Serial killing, itself, is a "distinctly modern phenomenon, a
product of relatively recent social and cultural conditions to which criminologists can provide fresh
insight by accentuating the broad institutional frameworks, motivations, and opportunity structures
within which serial killing occurs" (Haggerty and Ellerbrok 6). According to John E. Douglas, co–
author of Mindhunters, the reason that murders committed by serial killers, at first blush, seem to be
senseless crimes is because serial killers are often "motivated by a strong emotional feeling"
(Dokterman), such as hate, vengeance, or regret. FBI agents have identified domination,

Officials said the shooting occurred about forty minutes after sunset, when it is illegal to hunt.

who has not outgrown his goth phase. The guy is an enigma. You will find him commenting
intellectually on the American obsession to celebrities and violence, but his songs often make him
come off as a self–absorbed teenager, who has deep love for himself and an antisocial behavior. We
have penned down top six of his most outrageous quotes. Number Six: All the seven deadly sins are

Four: To me, Satan ultimately represents rebellion. I suppose everyone has a right to their own

Adler's theory of individual personality doesn't necessarily account for individuals with two unique
sides personality, which is evident throughout the context and background of his life. On one hand,
he was a magnetic and loving person that drew in others with his intelligence and self–proclaimed

In addition to the many lies that he has told about both himself and his life, as well as the

A Family Tradition. The Manson Murders One of the most heinous crimes ever committed in recent
history is the Tate / LeBlanc murders masterminded by Charles Manson. Although he never
physically killed anyone, Manson manipulated his followers to carry out these acts. How can a man
manipulate people so easily into committing brutal murders? An even better question is how could
his followers obey his command, without a second thought? I'm not sure we will ever get a
definitive answer.

Richard DeMargeno, a criminologist, believed Manson could control these people by taking the
place of their father figures. "It wasn't a very difficult process. He was dealing with lonely insecure
people in need of a father figure, people who didn't have much ego to begin with. What he did, in
effect, was to tear down that ego and substitute himself, thus gaining enormous control over his
followers." To his girls, Charles Manson was the man of their dreams, their knight in shining armor.
Manson had replaced these girls' father figure, placing himself at the center of their lives. Manson
soon recruited dozens of girls into his "Family." Many outsiders found him to be a persistent
recruiter who came on strong with every girl he met, a narcist who treated his followers like
possessions and barely showed any real affection to them. When a new girl was recruited, the
biggest problem was polyamory. He preached that women should be submissive to men. Shockingly,
these girls came to accept his ideas. Obviously, Charles had an unbelievable talent of manipulating
people. Per online sources, Paul Watkins, said the following quote: "I lived with Charlie for about
one year straight and on and off for two years. I know Charlie. I know him inside and out. I became
Charlie. Everything I once was, was Charlie. There was nothing left of me anymore.

Infamous cult leader and convicted killer of the 60s Charles Manson died in prison at the age of 83
this Sunday. Manson was known for his involvement in the killings of at least seven people in
California in 1969. This included 8–month–pregnant actress, Sharon Tate. It was found in the trial
that he told his "family" what to do and where, and they carried out his commands. The plan behind
the killings was to start a race war, hoping the killings would be seen a something done by black

The 60s were a point when it was normal for teens and young adults to leave home and start their
lives elsewhere, whether or not it was with the hippie movement. It was also when there was a good
amount of civil rights activities were going on and the Black Panthers came on the scene. It was
revealed in a book about Manson that his plan he thought their was going to be a war between
balock and white people. He wanted to start this war with the killings, hoping people would think
black people, or a civil rights group, had committed the murders. In Manson's mind this would have
started the war, which he called Helter Skelter after the Beatles song. Manson's life would most
likely have gone differently if he had a different childhood. He grew up with his aunt and uncle for
most of his young childhood, because his father left and his mother was in jail for a number of
years. When she got out and he went to live with her, she didn't want him and tried to get him put in
foster homes and the like. When he was sent away to a school for boys, he ran away to find her
again. This time he understood that his mother didn't want him when she would not take him

Since his birth, Charles Manson has led a life of rejection, jealousy, and incarceration. Due to his
absent parents, he began a life of crime which eventually led him to manipulate a group of people
who were responsible for multiple deaths and assaults in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Charles
Manson's hectic childhood led to his life of crime and caused his imprisonment for life. The
youngest of three children, Kathleen Maddox grew up in a strict religious household in Ashland
Kentucky where no make up was allowed and God's will dominated over everything. Anything such
as looking at the opposite sex, smoking, cursing, or even showing extra skin than necessary was

Instead of starting a new life and trying to do good, Charles Manson turned back to his life of crime
to make a living. Before his own eyes, Manson was become his mother Kathleen and acting out.
Manson robbed a grocery store, stole multiple things, and got involved with the wrong crowd of
people. Soon enough he was arrested for stealing a bike and stood in front of a judge. The judge
declared that he cannot be off on his own and had to get in contact with his mother. Kathleen told
the judge once again that she couldn't take care of him except this time the judge was sympathetic.
Knowing how hard it was for Charles Manson to fit in at the last reform school, he decided to send
him to Father Flanagan's Boys Town. After only a couple of days, Manson and another kid ran away
from this new place. Together the two of them went on a bunch of crime sprees including wrecking
a car. Eventually the two young boys got caught and this time the judge wasn't sympathetic.
Kathleen had no say at this point and Charles was put into the Indianapolis Juvenile Home. Just like
before, Manson escaped and this time brought numerous juveniles along with him. He went straight
to stealing a car and was back in custody less than two hours later. The Indianapolis justice system
was fed up with Manson's antics and he landed himself a one way ticket to the county jail. In only

On August 6, 1969, a megalomaniac named Charles Manson ordered his "Family" to kill everyone
in a house that used to be owned by a well known music recorder named Terry Melcher. However,
Malcher was not occupying the house but instead the house was occupied by a renowned movie
producer, Roman Polanski, and his wife, actress Sharon Tate. On that date, Manson's family
perpetrated one of the most gruesome crime in Hollywood's history by stabbing to death Sharon Tate
and her friends. The case that ensued after the murder became one of the most publicised murder
trial in the history of crime.
In order to really understand why this crime took place, we first need to explore Charles Manson's
and his "Family's" history. Charles Manson had a troubled background. He was born on November
12, 1934 to Kathleen Maddox. Kathleen Maddox was 16 years old when she had Charles. Charles
biological father was Colonel Walker Scott. His father was not around him because his mother was
not married to him and had promiscuous sex with Scott. Charles started stealing and committing
crimes at the age of 12. He has been detained in different juvenile facilities throughout the nation.

Manson's plan was that when the war starts, he and his "Family" will hide away in the desert until

annihilated. He planned that when the apocalypse was over, he will come out of hiding and will
become the leader of the country. In order to expedite the process of the apocalypse, Manson had
planned to kill famous white celebrities and blame the African American population for the murder.

Charles Manson is a well–known American criminal and musician. Although he was best known as
a cult leader who inspired the killings of eight people between July and August of 1969, he had a

Manson started in a world where the chances that his basic physiological needs where most likely

he spent the majority of his youth being shuffled from home to home and then in detention. He
attempted to meet belongingness and love through a family made up strangers. The upper levels
would be difficult to achieve without first fulfilling the lower levels. Rogerian theory focuses on
coming to terms with our own reality and not trying to be someone whom we are not and in some
ways, it seems like Manson has come to terms with who he is, and yet, he is also living up to the
expectation of being nothing set for him by others. The disadvantage of this theory is that he has
such notoriety, it would be difficult for him to find a therapist who could refrain from being bias one
way or the other; further, he would have to trust and be honest and give an honest view, which,
given his mental health, might be skewed even if he is being honest in his mind. The assessment tool
best suited for Manson would be interview. Although the patient is capable of lying, the validity of
the interview can be proven through the success or failure of the treatment (Friedman & Schustack,

he claimed to be both the reincarnation of Jesus Christ and Satan. This sense of superiority over his

powerless. Does any teenager really have life's answers? Or are they aimlessly searching for them

Charles Manson is an example of a leader who used his power for pure evil. Charles Manson was
never actually found guilty of the murders committed in 1969. He was found guilty of first degree

There was a core group within the Manson Family. It was composed of two young men, Charles

Manson Family was a hippie cult led by a man named Charles Manson. For many years, the
mention of these people struck fear and horror into the hearts and minds of the American people.
They could not help, but wonder who these people were, and what could have influence this group
of young adults, barely more than children, to commit a crime of such unspeakable horror. ... Show

In the home, Sharon Tate, Polanski's pregnant actress wife, was having a small party with her friends
Abigail Folger, Jay Sebring, and Wojciech Frykowski. An 18 year old boy named Steven Parent was
also in the property at the time, visiting the home's caretaker. On this night, Manson had Charles
"Tex" Watson drive some of his girls, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, Leslie Van Houten, Linda
Kasabian, and Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, over to the Tate house with the instruction to kill and to
"leave something witchy" behind(). Manson told them that they had to kill everyone in the Tate
house to help bring about Helter Skelter. Both Tex and Susan had taken a large amounts of speed
before driving the other girls over to the Tate house. Once at the home, Tex walked through the front
gate to discover Steven Parent in his car, leaving the property. It was then that Tex shot Parent in the
head and told the girls that it was safe to go in. Krenwinkel recalls that she knew "people were going
to die"(). Tex crawled in through the window and unlocked the front door for the others. The family
gathered everyone in the living room of the house and tied them up. Tex announce to the victims
that he was "the devil" and he had come "to do the devil's work"(). Abigail Folger managed to
wiggle out of her restrains, and was knifed down in Tate's front yard. As

Charles Manson Research Paper
Charles Manson was born on November 12, 1934 to Kathleen Maddox and Walker Scott. Manson is
famous for being the leader of the Manson Family Cult. This cult would become notorious for being
connected to brutal murders in Hollywood.
Many people would blame Manson's behavior on his mother. Kathleen Maddox had Charles at the
young age of 16. Throughout Manson's childhood witnessed his mother be arrested and began being
skipped around homes. Maddox was arrested in 1939 for a robbery charge. After this Manson went
to live with his aunt in West Virginia. When Maddox got out of jail on parole in 1942 she tracked
Manson down and lived in muggy, run–down hotel rooms. The court wound up taking Manson and
placing him in the Gibault School for Boys. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He began with burglarizing many stores and was sent to Indianapolis juvenile center. Proceeding his
arrest Manson got sent to the National Training School for Boys in Washington D.C., he lived in this
home for four years before he was sent to a Federal Reformatory in Virginia for being immensely
antisocial. Things started to look up for him when he was moved to the Federal Reformatory in
Chillicothe, Ohio and spend two years being a model student, this ended his parole in 1954.
However, in the following year Manson slipped back into the awful behavior he displayed
previously. He started stealing cars, forging cash, check–cashing, and failing to appear in court. All
of this resulted in many more years in jail and out on parole.
After Manson was released from jail on Match 21, 1967, he moved to California. He became a
"hippie" and soon met Mary Brunner at the University of California. Manson was known as a very
swuave individual and sometimes even referred to as charming. With that being said it was very
easy for him to organize a group of people to come and listen to him exhort his philosophy on
Scientology. These, along with many others, became part of his "family'. He and his followers
traveled to several places within the United States. In 1968, Manson and his group of followers
settled in Death Valley, located in Eastern

Charles Manson Case
First, I chose this case because of the reverberation of Charles Manson and his crimes. I first had
knowledge of the Charles Manson case after it was referenced in the TV show, Criminal Minds,
after a cult killed 7 people.
Charles Manson was born on November 12, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Manson's life of crime started
from as young as 10 years old. His first crime was robbing a liquor store in his home town. During
his youth, he was continually sent to juvenile detention centers. However, time and time again he
escaped and committed more petty crimes. In 1952, he was sent to the Federal Reformatory in
Chillicothe, Ohio. Up until 1966, Manson was constantly in and out of prison. He was finally
released from Terminal Island in 1967.
Once out of prison, Manson made his to San Francisco with his early followers, including Mary
Brunner and about 19 other women. This was the beginning of Manson's cult, The Manson Family.
The Family later relocated to Spahn's Movie Ranch. After hearing The Beatles' White Album,
Manson was convinced that the song "Helter Sketler" prophesied a race war between Africans
Americans & Caucasians. His plan was to hide underground in Death Valley, California during the
war, in which the Africans would be victorious in. However, he said the African Americans would

This time the target was Terry Melcher, an old acquaintance of Manson. Susan Atkins, Linda
Kasabian and Patricia Krenwinkel were sent to enact the murder at Melcher's house. However, the
Melchers had moved out and instead Sharon Tate, who was a famous actress at the time, her unborn
child and three others who were visiting were killed. The Tate murders received national
recognition. Atkins, Kasabian and Krenwinkel were identified as the killers and after an eight–
month trial, they were all sentenced to death. However, in 1972, the death penalty was abolished in
California so their punishments were overturned to life

Chantal Gabie: A Short Story
Chantal Gabie stated she was outside the west exit doors near classroom #1013 and was smoking a
cigarette. She heard a loud pop noise and saw Chuck Manson running out from the west exit doors.
Gabie thought she heard at least three pop noise, and seconds later saw Manson. Gabie doesn't own
a gun or ever fired a gun before, but thought it was very loud and differently didn't sound like
fireworks. Manson was in a hurry when he ran outside the exit doors, but strangely enough smiled at
her while running away. He smiled at her, because they had attended a class together. Gabie was
questioned about their relationship, and she stated they had dated before. They were dating a few
months, before she left left. He was acting strangely around her and

Charles Manson Traits

  • 1. Charles Manson Traits Traits of a Cult Leader: Charles Manson In 1969, Charles Manson instructed a few of his cult followers to commit a series of murders in Beverly Hills. The victims killed by Manson's followers were Abigail Ann Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, Steven Earl Parent, Sharon Tate Polanski, Jay Sebring and Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. These murders were highly publicized due to the fascinating story behind them and people involved. "Helter Skelter" was written by Vincent Bugliosi (a prosecutor during the Manson trial) and Curt Gentry, and gives a first–person description on the Manson murders and the trial that followed. In this book, Bugliosi portrays Manson as a delusional, manipulative, and intelligent, three traits that gave him the ability to commit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He had visions and thoughts that displayed signs of paranoia and insanity. An example of this is shown in his appearance before his trial; "He completely shaved his head, because, he told newsmen, 'I am the Devil and the Devil always has a bald head'" (416). Most people, whether believing in the Devil or not, would consider what Manson said nonsensical. Furthermore, not even those who believe in the Devil would not assume that he was bald, and would certainly not shave their heads to have a similar appearance as him. Another example of Manson's delusional behavior is when he claims that his "Family" are the chosen people. "The chosen people were The Family, Charlie said. He would lead them to the desert, where they would multiply until they numbered 144,000. He got this, Poston said, 'from reading things in the Bible, from Revelations'" (369). When Manson read the Bible, he believed that certain prophecies were directed towards him and he was the one to fulfill them. Charles Manson also believed that the Beatles song "Helter Skelter" was a prophecy of an apocalyptic war in which racist and non–racist whites essentially exterminate one another over the poor treatment of ... That was the fate of the victims of Charles Manson's family. Some of the victims were were brutally stabbed to death, while others were shot dead. Charles Manson never participated in any of these heinous murders; he manipulated others to commit the murders for him. Charles Manson was a very manipulative man and is known as the "icon of evil". From his troubled childhood, to his adult life as leader of the infamous Manson Family, Charles Manson led a life that made him notorious. Manson's crimes stemmed from his early childhood. Jay Sebring was trying to save Sharon Tate, but was brutally kicked and then shot. Two girls managed to escape from the house, Frykowski and Folger, but were chased down and stabbed to death. • 5. Informative Essay: The Manson Trial The Manson trial began in June of 1970. The jury in this case was locked up for the entire trial to protect the jury from the publicity and the harassment they would face from the public. Five women and seven men were selected to be on the jury with ages spanning from twenty–five to seventy– three. One of the jury members was a retired deputy sheriff. The prosecutor of this case was Vincent Bugliosi. Bugliosi's opening statement described Manson a man "Who would refer to himself as Jesus Christ", he "was a killer who cleverly masqueraded behind the common image of a hippie that of being peace loving." Manson's defense made sure that The Family were well connected. They did this by having Manson communicate with his followers outside to talk ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To this day, Manson receives mail in prison from young people wanting to join the family, and gets more mail than any other convict in the american prison system. Manson still remains relevant in our culture, with movies, documentaries, plays, and operas written about him. The popular rock band Guns 'n' Roses has also performed many of his songs. The reason Manson remains so relevant is because of the high profile victims he planned, including many celebrities and even President Ford. In the minds of the average american alive at the time, Manson has become a metaphor for pure evil, equivocal to the devil himself. Today, almost every extremist and hate mongering group in america, from the clan to the neo–nazis, have embraced Manson's philosophy and hailed him as a saint. While in prison, Manson has been charged with almost every conceivable crime, from treason to marijuana possession. Manson has refused to attend his last two parole hearings after the board informed him that he would not be allowed to attend without handcuffs. The majority of the Mason family is still in prison on a list of charges that seemingly goes on forever. There are a few who have either served their sentences or have earned parole, and continue actively advertising and serving the family. • 7. Charles Manson Research Paper Manson In the summer of August, 1969, free love reigned and cries of protest against the Vietnam War could be heard throughout the streets of America. It seemed to most that this era, filled with the ideals of hippies and psychedelic media, would never end. However, the era seemed to come to an abrupt halt on the night of August 9th, when five innocent people were horribly slain, including pregnant actress Sharon Tate. These murders would be followed by another set, the following night. This time it would be Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, wealthy grocery chain owners. The movie follows the case with an omniscient point of view, mainly focusing on the point of view of the leading prosecutor, Vincent Bugliosi. Occasionally, the viewer receives information Bugliosi does not have, by switching to the viewpoint of a Family member. The film accurately displays most historical facts, including an in depth explanation of what Charlie led the Family to believe; killing was a form of love, because they were simply setting a soul free, and that Charlie was Jesus in the flesh. The amount of violence in the movie is not depicted as it was in real life. This is because showing true–to–life, graphic images of the murders was not appropriate for television at that time. Finally we look at the sociocultural perspective that focuses on the relationship between social behavior and culture. The social behavior that he exhibited while moving between relationships and imprisonment was magnified when The Beatles came out with Helter Skelter. The two perspectives that seem to best explain the life of Charles Manson are sociocultural and behavioral. The behavioral perspective represents learned behaviors. At an early age Manson was around drugs, drinking, and prostitution. Naturally Manson learned that these things were ok. His mother was a prostitute that wanted nothing to do with her son; she also had a drug problem. Manson grew up in and out of prison and developed a drug and alcohol problem. Manson could not have a functioning relationship, his first wife left him due to him being in and out of jail. Manson second wife was a prostitute and divorced Manson after he was arrested for pimping, stealing, and conning. After being released from prison Manson headed to San Francisco where he played guitar. Manson began to develop followers. • 17. Sickest Cult Murderer: Charles Manson Charles Manson is one of the sickest cult murderer in the United States. He was often known to rebel since he was younger, as said by Paul Watkins. By the age of thirty–two he had been in and out of reformatories and jails plenty of times. It started off as burglaries for him to pay for a place to stay, then it started advancing according to Susan Atkins. When he went to the juvenile detention center he escaped after just one day. This was only the start of his adventures. He was later recaptured and sent to another place, which he escaped five days after his arrival. This was done with a partner in crime whom he had committed many burglaries with. This got him caught once again and started the chain of even more burglaries and escaping says Vincent Bugliosi. • 21. Charles Manson Essay The 1960s were a volatile era of social and political turbulence – a majority of which was centered in culturally progressive areas (San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, etc.). In 1969, Charles Manson, an American criminal, rose to infamy with his orchestration of seven gruesome murders in Los Angeles, California. What's even more shocking than the murder scenes, was the fact that Manson did not perpetrate any of the murders himself, but instead convinced others to commit the crimes for him: the murderers had been done by the Manson Family, a cult Manson himself had created. Manson's total control over his followers marked him as a manipulative and cunning psychopath, however the development of his cult was largely due to the 1960s ... In addition, these criminals have affected our public perception to view them as popular figures rather than for the violent acts they have committed (Schmid 4). By buying their merchandise, watching their movies and treating them as celebrities, society no longer sees the killer – they see the mask, hence alternating our perception to judge if a killer is 'good' or 'bad'. That is to say, serial killers are psychopaths that shouldn't be idolized. Although some serial killers react to social changes, society has a reaction to all serial culture. In order to understand how serial killers are affected by social changes, one must understand their psyche. A serial killer is "sexually motivated but the underlying reason is power" (Newton 197). The killer wants power over his victims. Serial killing, itself, is a "distinctly modern phenomenon, a product of relatively recent social and cultural conditions to which criminologists can provide fresh insight by accentuating the broad institutional frameworks, motivations, and opportunity structures within which serial killing occurs" (Haggerty and Ellerbrok 6). According to John E. Douglas, co– author of Mindhunters, the reason that murders committed by serial killers, at first blush, seem to be senseless crimes is because serial killers are often "motivated by a strong emotional feeling" (Dokterman), such as hate, vengeance, or regret. "It wasn't a very difficult process. He was dealing with lonely insecure people in need of a father figure, people who didn't have much ego to begin with. What he did, in effect, was to tear down that ego and substitute himself, thus gaining enormous control over his followers." To his girls, Charles Manson was the man of their dreams, their knight in shining armor. Manson had replaced these girls' father figure, placing himself at the center of their lives. Manson soon recruited dozens of girls into his "Family." Many outsiders found him to be a persistent recruiter who came on strong with every girl he met, a narcist who treated his followers like possessions and barely showed any real affection to them. When a new girl was recruited, the biggest problem was polyamory. He preached that women should be submissive to men. Shockingly, these girls came to accept his ideas. Additionally the 1920–1930 census listed Colonel Scott as white. There is much about Manson's early life that is up for debate because of the varying stories he has given in interviews, many of which were fabrications. Manson's mother had been told to be a heavy drinker. According to Manson, his mother once sold him for a pitcher of beer to a childless waitress. Hiis uncle retrieved him from the waitress several days later.3 After an attempted robbery, Manson's mother was imprisoned. After her parole in 1942, she retrieved Manson from the care of his Aunt and Uncle. • 55. Charles Manson Research Paper In 1967 the Manson Family began in Venice, California. Charles Manson took the role of being a leader to his cult members by making connections between religion and rock n' roll music in order to brainwash them with his beliefs. During the summer of 1969, it is documented that there was a total of twenty–four dead bodies throughout three different murder scenes. Most believe there was a total of thirty–five killings, but some were not included in the total because there was not enough evidence. Due to the crimes committed, some wonder if Charles was severely mentally ill and did not have any control over his wrong doings. Mentally ill or not, that doesn't justify his actions nor make it acceptable to treat Manson different from any other serial killer. Charles Manson was born in ... Not all people with this illness have the same symptoms and each symptom can alter over an extensive amount of time. When Manson mixed drugs he used with this illness, it turned into something else. Substance abuse can substantially increase violence and hallucinations. Bad hallucinations not only include false seeings, but also false hearing, feeling, tasting, and smelling of things that are not real. Langer 8 It wasn't until the 1990's that Doctors discovered a new medication to help Schizophrenia. These drugs are commonly taken in a pill or liquid form once or twice a month. Delusions should go away in a matter of a few weeks, but it often takes up to six weeks to see a significant improvement. Maybe if this medication would have came a little sooner, Manson and his family wouldn't have had the chance to do the horrific things they did. However, some did not feel so committed to Charlie and felt they should tell the police all that they knew and heard from the so–called Family members. Based on the testimony of ex–Family members and people who had been acquainted with the Family, Charles Manson, Charles Watson, Susan Atkins, Linda Kasabian, and Patricia Krenwinkel were all indicted on seven counts of murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder for the Tate–LaBianca slayings, while Leslie Van Houten was indicted on two counts of murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder, since she had only been involved in the LaBianca murders. Charles Manson was now responsible for some of the most notorious murders in American history. However, the issue of what the motive really was and whether Charles Manson should have been held responsible for these crimes was, and remains to be, a controversial topic. ... In the book American Murder Houses: A Coast–to–Coast Tour of the Most Notorious Houses of Homicide, author Steve Lehto shares his perspective of the Manson case based of evidence he gathered. Lehto believed Manson's motive behind these murders came from his belief in an impending race war between blacks and whites in America which was inspired by "Helter Skelter", from the Beatles' White Album. He believes that Manson's way of thinking was that there needed to be some kind of spark to get the race war going, like a well–staged murder by white people that made it look like it was the doing of black militants. Lehto makes it very clear that while this idea is one of Charles Manson, Manson himself does not directly participate in the Tate killings, only Family members did, and while he did enter the LaBianca home, he was not present during the ... When hearing the name "Manson," two words that immediately come to mind are crazy and murders. I believe Manson is insane, and should be in jail for life. Although he did not personally commit murders, he had other people that trusted him, do it for him. Manson manipulated people all around him and could get people to murder whenever he asked them to. There is a huge amount of history and background that comes up when talking about Manson. He was found guilty of first degree murder of directing the murders. He was originally sentenced to death but in 1972 the California Supreme Court invalidated all outstanding death sentences to life in prison. To this day, Charles Manson still has a loyal "cult–like" following. His leadership style was to prey on those who struggled in life, those who did not have a solid life and were looking for direction. Once he was able to reach them he would use coercion, fear and an array of drugs to keep them loyal. Manson had a hard childhood and it is believed that it was those psychological ... It was composed of two young men, Charles "Tex" Watson, Bobby Beausoleil, and four young impressionable women. It would be this group that Manson was able to brainwash to commit murders.
