Some game ideas for class
1. Good icebreaker/for the beginning of class:
Human knot – have all the kids stand in a circle and put their hands in the center. Tell them to
hold hands with two hands in the center. Once everyone is holding hands tell them to untangle
themselves without letting go of the other person’s hands. They will have to work together and
step over/crawl under others arms to untangle themselves.
What did you do on the weekend activity (good way for them to practice past tense): On Monday
or Tuesday class you can have an activity about what they did on the weekend. Have students go
to the whiteboard and write down what they did/ or have them talk to the class/a partner.
Speaking Games:
I used this for 8th grade class, it worked well for going over vocab:
Split the class into two groups. Have each group pick one person to go first. The two students
picked will sit in a chair facing the rest of the class. Behind them (on either a powerpoint or on
the whiteboard) write a vocab word. Each team must describe what the word is without saying
the word to their team member. Whichever team member says the word in english first gets a
point. The team with the most points at the end wins.
Another vocab game (I think its called flyswatter) Put vocab words all over the whiteboard and
give them hints/descriptions of the word. The students must hit the correct word with their hand.
Whoever touches the word first gets a point.
For working on asking questions and answering:
Have the students make two lines with their chairs, facing each other. One line will ask a series
of questions that are listed on the board, and the other line will have to answer each of the
questions. Give them about 30 seconds/1 minute and then have one line move one chair over so
that they are in front of a new partner. Continue until each person in line 1 has asked questions to
each person in line 2. Then switch so that line 2 asks questions and line 1 answers. Etc.
Another game for Q&A: Have each student hold a card/paper with a word on it. Tell them to
arrange the words in order so that they create a question and an answer. Students will have to
stand in the correct place so that the question and answer are grammatically correct.
Blank comics: find a comic strip online that does not have any words. Have the students to come
up with their own dialogue for what is happening in each strip of the comic.
Card game: Use a deck of cards and give rules to each card (ex. Everytime you get an Ace, you
have to say the whole alphabet).
Record the students (works if you have a video phone): If you want them to really practice
speaking in english, and not just goofing around the whole class, give them a writing/speaking
activity with their partner. Have them practice with their partner and tell them that you will
record the dialogue between them and their partner (with the camera on your phone). Students
will be more focused because they don’t want to look dumb on video.
