Before starting this Introduction to Healthcare this quarter I actually thought professionalism was
only about how you dressed yourself, but now I know that your attitude and the way that you
conduct yourself plays an important part in professionalism as well. How you present your work is
also a part of professionalism.

The book also talks about the life of a professional. It talks about how life for professionals has
gotten harder with recent business. Small business professionals have to fend off big businesses that
don't care for their customers or care about fair business. Unprofessionalism is commonly found in
bigger business that don't have a strong bond between customers and the staff. Big business just
shuffles people in and out of the store, selling their goods and not caring if it is what the customer
really needs. True Professionals care about their customers, they care about their situation, and what
they like and dislike. The book talks about incentives and rewards programs. Some businesses use
cash rewards given to employees for good work, sort of like commission. What businesses don't
realize is that having employees motivate themselves to achieve incentives can only last a little
while. Employees need more motivation. Motivation from employers doesn't have to be rewards or
incentives, but a simple "Good job." Or "Keep up the good work." Can keep employees happy.
Incentives are a good thing to have and use, but there has to be more to it. The book says that you
should act helpful from the beginning, not once you get paid. Be helpful from the beginning. Since
you are a professional and that is your business, you are obligated to help a customer who generally

My definition of professionalism is to be as professional as possible when in the classroom, meeting

cultures and holidays to my students only after doing an immense amount of research and consulting

I have always been a Type A perfectionist who made calculated decisions after thorough planning.

history from our 52–year–old male patient who presented asking for a refill on his pain medication.
As more information was gathered, it was revealed that the patient had run out of his medication two

Respect means to treat others with "acceptance, dignity and respect." (Williams, 2016, p. 93). As
nurses, we will encounter many patients with unique cultures and traits. Cultural sensitivity is
defined in our Medical Surgical Book as, "knowing a politically correct language and not making
statements that may antagonize another person's cultural beliefs, and cultural competence includes
the skills and knowledge required to provide adequate nursing care". (Williams & Hopper, 2011).

patient sees their nurse taking those extra steps to make them feel accepted, dignified and respected,
they will be able to confide in you and ultimately create the best healing environment possible.
Furthermore, not only having respect for your patients is important but also yourself. Dressing
according to your facilities policies, being clean, odor free, minimum makeup, wrinkle free uniform
and overall nice appearance, shows pride in oneself. This takes away from yourself as a distraction
and focuses on the patient and tasks at hand. This shows to your employers and patients that you are

Professionalism can be defined in many different ways and from different perspectives.
Professionalism is about a lot more than just following policies and procedures. It is also about
having essential behaviors such as right attitude, appearance, ethics, knowledge, competence,
perseverance, dedication, self–improving and many more. Student professionalism is much more
than simply acquiring the best training and skills; it's also about how a person behaves and acts in
order to achieve his or her goals. However, professionalism is not just for people with higher
degrees. It's present in everybody's daily life regardless of his or her level of education. It should
also extend to an individual's personal life as well to some extent. Humans don't born knowing how
to develop a professional attitude, but in order to be success in life we have to learn and practice
good attitudes and behaviors that a professional person should have. Now at days the majority of our
new generations suffer of lack of professionalism. Many students don't take seriously his or her role
as a student or as an employee at some jobs. Good manners and values are really important in a
person's life because that depends in how his or her future will be. If a student don't show up to
class, comes late most of time, don't turn in homework on time and don't respect himself or herself
