Bill Gates was born October 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington. He is famous for building through
technological innovation, great business strategies and aggressive business tactics, the world's
largest software business, Microsoft. He is also well known for becoming the wealthiest person in
the world in the process of building his company.
Gates came from an upper middle–class family. His family atmosphere was warm and close, and he
and his two sisters were always encouraged to be competitive and strive for excellence. He started to
show an interest in computer programming at the age of 13 at the Lakeside School. It was there that
he met his friend and future partner Paul Allen, who was two years his senior. The two became fast

In 1981 Apple invited Microsoft to help develop software for Macintosh computers. It was through
this knowledge sharing with Apple that Microsoft was to develop Windows. In November 1985, Bill
Gates and Microsoft launched Windows; nearly two years after his announcement. Visually the
Windows system looked very similar to the Macintosh system Apple Computer Corporation had
introduced nearly two years earlier.
In 1986, Bill Gates took Microsoft public with an initial public offering (IPO) of $21 per share.
Gates held 45 percent of the company's 24.7 million shares and became an instant millionaire at age
31. Gates's stake at that time was $234 million of Microsoft's $520 million. Over time, the
company's stock increased in value and split numerous times. In 1987, Bill Gates became a
billionaire when the stock raised to $90.75 a share. Since then, Gates has been at the top, or at least
near the top, of Forbes' annual list of the top 400 wealthiest people in America. In 1999, with stock
prices at an all–time high and the stock splitting eight–fold since its IPO, Gates's wealth briefly
topped $101 billion.
Several companies started trying to develop their own operating system to replace Microsoft's MS–
DOS but Gates pushed ahead with the Windows software, improving its operation and expanding its
uses. In 1989, Microsoft introduced Microsoft Office

Microsoft's Bill Gates, though a transactional leader, he is by far a charismatic leader. He really fits
the mold of a computer "geek". He motivates his employees because his personality fits theirs. Thus,
as a champion in the computer industry, he is the champion of the computer geeks. The more his
company grows and wins in the marketplace, the harder people work for him. He continues to have
good vision, vision that gets good results. Good vision, good workers and a good history of success
will keep Bill Gates and Microsoft in the limelight for years to come.
In the 70's and 80's, personal computers were really struggling to find their "place in the sun" in the

Furthermore, computer geeks, being the proud tradesman that they are, enjoy Gates' ability to
celebrate their success in the business by treating them with grandiose events. For instance, in 1992
when Gates held an all company meeting at the Kingdome in Seattle. The computer geeks love this
kind of stuff. They are good and do not feel like they have to apologize for it. The royal treatment at
the Kingdome just underscores that fact. Not to mention that Bill Gates also owns a $35 million
home and drives a Porsche. This flamboyant aspect of his personality, along with his casual
appearance, makes him "right–on" with the "computer jocks"
Bill Gates definitely uses two situational contingency approaches in his leadership (participate and
delegate) and these approaches compliment his chosen path for achieving goals (participate and
achievement oriented). Firstly, he knows how to judge which leadership skill is necessary and when.
When it comes to product lines and programming, he takes a hands off approach, he delegates. He
picks the best graduates, out of the best universities and gives them lots of responsibility. This opens
up the priceless entrepreneur spirit within every employee and makes it Microsoft's own.
However, when it comes to meetings, he will not just set at the back of the room and play the role of
the boss. He jumps into the details of the meeting –

Essay on Gates of Fire
Steven Pressfield's The Gates of Fire is set in the fifth century B.C. in Greece. The story revolves
around the famous battle of Thermopylae where three hundred Spartans held off hundreds of
thousands of Persians, saving Greece. Pressfield creates a fictional story around the battle where one
man, a squire named Xeones, survives to tell the Spartan story of the battle and the events preceding
it. Xeones, who is the protagonist, tells his life story to the royal Persian historian while in captivity.
This life history of Xeones constitutes the body of the book.
Xeones tale starts when he was a young boy living in Astakiots, a small Greek polis. Xeones is ten

Xeones, still filled with vengeance, wants to go to Sparta, home of the legendary warriors that
constitute the best army in Greece. They cannot decide so they end up parting ways, Xeones to
Sparta, Diomache to Athens. In their entire lives they will only meet once more.
When Xeones arrives in Sparta (Lakedaemon) he cannot become a soldier because he is not
Lakedaemonian. Instead he becomes a squire, a station that is basically a form of slavery. This in
itself doesn't present a conflict to Xeoes, he is willing to do anything to serve with the Spartans.
For the rest of The Gates of Fire the conflicts are not Xeones's, but his master's. Xeones's first
master Alexandros is a young Spartan around his age who is enrolled in the Spartan military school.
Alexandros's father is Polemarch and he is a pure bred Lakedaemonian. Alexandros isn't the military
type though, he is much better at singing. However, since he is a pure bred Lakedaemonian he has
no choice but to serve in the military from the age of seven till he is sixty. He will become a full
soldier at twenty when he completes military training. Xeones' job as his squire is to be his sparring
partner and clean his gear, and basically be his slave. Despite the fact that he is much better soldier
than Alexandros, Xeones doesn't resent being his slave, indeed he grows to love him (as a brother.)

The photograph of the Golden Gate Bridge by Joseph B. Strauss, is a unique piece of art from the
pre–world war two era. The photograph depicts a gorgeous setting on a beautiful day in San
Francisco, California. The photograph displays a popular, fascinating bridge going across the San
Francisco bay. The picture also portrays a mountainous scenery in the background of the bridge. The
photograph features a lively contrast of colors, along with lines, and space. The only thing is, why
isn't the bridge gold?
Instead of the Golden Gate Bridge being gold, it features a distinct shade of red, along with other
objective colors. As seen in the photograph, shades of brown, green, and blue give the image a lively
contrast of cool and warm colors. The cinnamon colored mountains tones nicely with the distinct red
color of the bridge. As seen in the blue sky, there is a white tint depicted in the hue, showing the
value of the image while portraying a sunny day, due to the amount of light being reflected. The
blue sky's hue of desaturation color dominates less and less. The vivid color of the bridge melds best
with the scenery. The bridge stands out against the natural colors of the surrounds. Strauss'

When the Internet was first introduced, it was strictly meant for the use of the Federal Bureau of
Investigations (F.B.I) for means of communication over long distances, and a faster form of sending
and receiving documents. When the Internet finally went public, Gates created a computer interface
that revolves completely around the Internet. Why did gates make this decision? Because he knew
that in time the Internet was going to expand. Gates quotes, "The Internet is the precursor of the
ultimate global network. There is little doubt that when the goal interactive network has finally
evolved into the highway, it will still be called the Internet. But as quaint as the term "information
highway" is beginning to sound, using it appropriately helps to draw the distinction between today's
primarily narrowband interactive network (the current "Internet") and tomorrow's broadband
interactive network (the "highway")." (The Road Ahead, Pg 103) Gates knew that just like the
highway system in America, the Internet would grow in a way that would connect everyone. The
highway system is a series of roads that intersect with each other throughout the United States,
creating a traveling system that is limitless. The Internet works in the same way, computers are now

Perhaps the most extreme example of this is within the Microsoft camp were the so–called Bill

strong was the admiration of Gates that these young men began to emulate their leader in almost
every way. Jeff Raikes soon had the patented Gates mannerisms down pat. Raikes was quickly
named Clone Number One in Microsoft circles. A Stanford MBA, Raikes had migrated from
Cupertino, where he had headed up the software effort on the ill–fated Apple III and had gained a
reputation as a firefighter for taking on tough software assignments.
Gates uses extraordinary discretion when hiring applicants to work for Microsoft. He wants to
ensure that every single person shares the same prospectus for the corporation, yet in their own way,
have personal beliefs that they are willing to stubbornly stick to. His aim is not to create clones
within the organization, but to stockpile it with as much imaginative genius has possible. It is only a
credit to his charismatic qualities that such extremely bright people wish to emulate Gates in every

him to be an inefficient leader, especially when it affects his listening. One of Gates administrative

was still trying to spread its wings and fly. AOn the day he was born in 1955, fewer then 500
electronic computers had existed in the entire world, their total retail value amounted to less then
$200 million, and the term Asoftware@ had not yet been coined.@(Manes, 2) Bill first laid a hand
on a computer in 1968 while in junior high school. The computer business was rapidly transforming
at this time, and so was Bill Gates. He saw the real profitable side of computers was not their
hardware. Rather it was the software end of the business. Good software is what makes a computer
exciting and easy to use. Bill Gates grabbed this concept and ran with it. The result: As of 1993
AGates was personally worth more than $2 billion@, and his company, Microsoft, was Avalued at
more than $7 billion.@(Manes, 2)
As Microsoft and the software industry grew, the computer hardware manufacturers no longer saw
the opportunity to exploit Bill Gates= company, as they had done initially with BASIC, one of the

Why Won 't Those Gates Break Down
"Why won't those gates break down? I'm losing too many soldiers." Whined General Zhousbek,

"We need different equipment." Stated General Zhousbek who took no comfort from her answer.

The Brandenburg Gate
The Brandenburg Gate is the trademark of Berlin and over the coarse of its life has been the symbol
of peace, victory, power, division, hope, and a united Germany. The gate is a symbol for Germany
much like the Eiffel tower is a symbol for France. The gate is located on the Pariser Platz. It is the
only gate of a series of gates that once stood in Berlin. The gate is located on Berlin's most famous
street the "Unter den Linden," or "Under the Lime Trees." This street is straight as an arrow, a mile
in length and leads directly to the royal residence. Due to these conditions the gate is visible from a

The main architectural design of this landmark has not changed since it was first constructed in
1791. However its symbolism has evolved over the course of Germany's history and has had some
minor architectural changes as a side effect.
In 1806 Napoleon passed beneath this gate as conqueror of Prussia and ordered that The Quadriga
be sent to Paris and that a gate be built for it to sit on. It was exhibited at the Louvre museum, until
the Arc de Triomphe in Paris was finished at which point The Quadriga was placed atop the Arc de

was changed after the German victory over France and the woman became Victoria, the goddess of
Victory by adding a Prussian eagle on an iron cross to her ensemble. They also named the square in
front of her "The Place of Paris".
In 1933 the National Socialists marched through the gate in a martial torch parade, with them came
the darkest chapter of German history, The gate went from being a symbol of victory to a symbol of

For people in my own age group, our oldest memories of computers are most likely the pinball game
on Windows XP, and Google's website showing a different font. A little earlier than that, documents
were saved on floppy disks instead of USB drives, and before that, network connections were made
over a phone line. However, it is hard for anyone to imagine a time when having "'a computer on
every desk and in every home'" was regarded as an impossibility, even if they remember those years
(Academy of Achievement). The personal computer has evolved into an essential tool in the daily
lives of most Americans, because of the wave of innovations that Bill Gates kicked off in 1975. Bill
Gates was raised as a fierce competitor, which he demonstrated at a young age when waterskiing or
playing tennis with his family. However, he was even more intense when he went up against
intellectual challenges, which his parents found out soon after enrolling him in the Lakeside School.
In 1967, a terminal was set up in the Seattle private school, which could use the resources of an off–

students took every opportunity for computer time they could get. When Paul Allen reflected on this

this undergraduate's mathematical brilliance. He proposed an elegant solution to what's known as

take society. Co–authored by Nathan Myhrvold, Microsoft's chief technology officer, and Peter
Rinearson, The Road Ahead held the No. 1 spot on the New York Times' bestseller list for seven
weeks. Published in the U.S. by Viking, the book was on the NYT list for a total of 18 weeks.
Published in more than 20 countries, the book sold more than 400,000 copies in China alone. In
1996, while redeploying Microsoft around the Internet, Gates thoroughly revised The Road Ahead to
reflect his view that interactive networks are a major milestone in human history. The paperback
second edition has also become a bestseller. Gates is donating his proceeds from the book to a non–
profit fund that supports teachers worldwide who are incorporating computers into their classrooms.
In addition to his passion for computers, Gates is interested in biotechnology. He sits on the board of
the Icos Corporation and is a shareholder in Darwin Molecular, a subsidiary of British–based

Heavens Gate Essay
On March 26, 1997, in what has become known as one of the most noteworthy mass suicides in
history, thirty–nine men and women affiliated with the Heavens Gate cult took their own lives by
ingesting a combination of Phenobarbitals mixed with applesauce and alcohol. Each was dressed all
in black, their faces covered by a purple shroud. Those who wore glasses had them neatly folded
next to their body, and all had identification papers for the authorities to find. The house was

die, and not live." And while their abrupt end may seem rather ... Show more content on

Members had to give all their possessions to the cult; several even voluntarily castrated themselves.
Much of the essential beliefs of Heaven's Gate are spelled out in a lengthy, first–person statement
published on the group's website. Written in 1995 by Mr. Applewhite (under the title "An E.T.
Presently Incarnate"), it reveals that Ms. Nettles died in 1985 (or, as he wrote, "separated from her
borrowed human container and returned to the Next Level"). The rest of their faith system is
detailed in a 200–page book that the members of Heaven's Gate self–published. One of them wrote
that they had spent 17 years undergoing a type of re–education, "a 'metaphoric' classroom
experience of changing over their consciousness and behavior," evolving to reach a stage in which
they could enter the higher realm that Mr. Applewhite and Ms. Nettles preached. In these and other
works, the group elaborated on its theology, based on a Christian framework, but with a whole new
set of millennialist beliefs that seems more like the works of a renowned science fiction writer. The
beliefs were these:
Two thousand years ago, the beings of the Kingdom Level Above Human appointed an "Older
Member" to send to Earth a "Representative" (Jesus) to teach people how to enter the "true"
Kingdom of God. But humans inspired by demonic forces killed this individual, also called "the
Captain," and transformed his teachings into "watered–down Country Club

In 1981 Apple invited Microsoft to help develop software for Macintosh computers. It was through this knowledge sharing with Apple that Microsoft was to develop Windows. In November 1985, Bill Gates and Microsoft launched Windows; nearly two years after his announcement. Visually the Windows system looked very similar to the Macintosh system Apple Computer Corporation had introduced nearly two years earlier. In 1986, Bill Gates took Microsoft public with an initial public offering (IPO) of $21 per share. Gates held 45 percent of the company's 24.7 million shares and became an instant millionaire at age 31. Gates's stake at that time was $234 million of Microsoft's $520 million. Over time, the company's stock increased in value and split numerous times. In 1987, Bill Gates became a billionaire when the stock raised to $90.75 a share. Since then, Gates has been at the top, or at least near the top, of Forbes' annual list of the top 400 wealthiest people in America. In 1999, with stock prices at an all–time high and the stock splitting eight–fold since its IPO, Gates's wealth briefly topped $101 billion. • 3. BILL GATES Essay Microsoft's Bill Gates, though a transactional leader, he is by far a charismatic leader. He really fits the mold of a computer "geek". He motivates his employees because his personality fits theirs. Thus, as a champion in the computer industry, he is the champion of the computer geeks. The more his company grows and wins in the marketplace, the harder people work for him. He continues to have good vision, vision that gets good results. Good vision, good workers and a good history of success will keep Bill Gates and Microsoft in the limelight for years to come. In the 70's and 80's, personal computers were really struggling to find their "place in the sun" in the machine computation market. The general public ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, computer geeks, being the proud tradesman that they are, enjoy Gates' ability to celebrate their success in the business by treating them with grandiose events. For instance, in 1992 when Gates held an all company meeting at the Kingdome in Seattle. The computer geeks love this kind of stuff. They are good and do not feel like they have to apologize for it. The royal treatment at the Kingdome just underscores that fact. Not to mention that Bill Gates also owns a $35 million home and drives a Porsche. This flamboyant aspect of his personality, along with his casual appearance, makes him "right–on" with the "computer jocks" Bill Gates definitely uses two situational contingency approaches in his leadership (participate and delegate) and these approaches compliment his chosen path for achieving goals (participate and achievement oriented). Firstly, he knows how to judge which leadership skill is necessary and when. When it comes to product lines and programming, he takes a hands off approach, he delegates. He picks the best graduates, out of the best universities and gives them lots of responsibility. This opens up the priceless entrepreneur spirit within every employee and makes it Microsoft's own. However, when it comes to meetings, he will not just set at the back of the room and play the role of the boss. He jumps into the details of the meeting – ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The story revolves around the famous battle of Thermopylae where three hundred Spartans held off hundreds of thousands of Persians, saving Greece. Pressfield creates a fictional story around the battle where one man, a squire named Xeones, survives to tell the Spartan story of the battle and the events preceding it. Xeones, who is the protagonist, tells his life story to the royal Persian historian while in captivity. This life history of Xeones constitutes the body of the book. When Xeones arrives in Sparta (Lakedaemon) he cannot become a soldier because he is not Lakedaemonian. Instead he becomes a squire, a station that is basically a form of slavery. This in itself doesn't present a conflict to Xeoes, he is willing to do anything to serve with the Spartans. For the rest of The Gates of Fire the conflicts are not Xeones's, but his master's. Xeones's first master Alexandros is a young Spartan around his age who is enrolled in the Spartan military school. Alexandros's father is Polemarch and he is a pure bred Lakedaemonian. Alexandros isn't the military type though, he is much better at singing. However, since he is a pure bred Lakedaemonian he has no choice but to serve in the military from the age of seven till he is sixty. He will become a full soldier at twenty when he completes military training. Xeones' job as his squire is to be his sparring partner and clean his gear, and basically be his slave. Despite the fact that he is much better soldier than Alexandros, Xeones doesn't resent being his slave, indeed he grows to love him (as a brother.) • 65. Bill Gates Vs Bill Gates Similarities For people in my own age group, our oldest memories of computers are most likely the pinball game on Windows XP, and Google's website showing a different font. A little earlier than that, documents were saved on floppy disks instead of USB drives, and before that, network connections were made over a phone line. However, it is hard for anyone to imagine a time when having "'a computer on every desk and in every home'" was regarded as an impossibility, even if they remember those years (Academy of Achievement). The personal computer has evolved into an essential tool in the daily lives of most Americans, because of the wave of innovations that Bill Gates kicked off in 1975. Bill Gates was raised as a fierce competitor, which he demonstrated at a young age when waterskiing or playing tennis with his family. However, he was even more intense when he went up against intellectual challenges, which his parents found out soon after enrolling him in the Lakeside School. In 1967, a terminal was set up in the Seattle private school, which could use the resources of an off– site computer for the duration of a paid session, and Gates was immediately hooked. Along with Paul Allen, he learned the programming language, BASIC, which was in use at the time, and the two students took every opportunity for computer time they could get. When Paul Allen reflected on this time, he noted one key difference between Gates and himself: "'Where I was curious to study everything in sight, Bill would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

First there's the kind of book you pick up and like the look of but then the first chapter is so bad that you have to put it down because you are either too confused by the plot or you discover it has been written in some obscure untranslatable language. The second type is where the first chapter is slightly disappointing but it is worth pursuing so you read on. The rest of their faith system is detailed in a 200–page book that the members of Heaven's Gate self–published. One of them wrote that they had spent 17 years undergoing a type of re–education, "a 'metaphoric' classroom experience of changing over their consciousness and behavior," evolving to reach a stage in which they could enter the higher realm that Mr. Applewhite and Ms. Nettles preached. In these and other works, the group elaborated on its theology, based on a Christian framework, but with a whole new set of millennialist beliefs that seems more like the works of a renowned science fiction writer. The beliefs were these: Two thousand years ago, the beings of the Kingdom Level Above Human appointed an "Older Member" to send to Earth a "Representative" (Jesus) to teach people how to enter the "true" Kingdom of God.
