Informative Speech On Factory Farming
"It is possible, I think, to say that a Christian agriculture is formed upon the understanding that it is
sinful for people to misuse or destroy what they did not make. The creation is a unique,
irreplaceable gift, therefore to be used with humility, respect, and skill"– Wendell Berry (Berry, The
Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture). This quote speaks numbers to me. I believe that
agriculture, both animals and plants, should be farmed with humility, respect and skill, as said by
Wendell Berry. It has, however, become a concern of mine that this is not the case in large industrial
farms. The purpose of my speech is to persuade my audience that there is a need for large scale
production of food to feed the growing population, but there needs to be some restrictions placed on
certain practices in factory farming. I first became interested in agriculture when I joined 4–H and
have since learned more through farming and studying animal science here at Penn State. Even
though we need factory farming, factory farming should have restrictions because Confined Animal
Feeding Operations and monoculture practices are doing more harm than good.
Before we get started, I want to address and define a few key terms that I will be using throughout
my speech. First term I want to address is factory farming. I may also refer to this as industrial
farming or industrial agriculture. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, factory farming,
or industrial agriculture is "the system of chemically intensive food production developed in the
decades after World War II, featuring enormous single–crop farms and animal production facilities"
(Union of Concerned Scientists, Industrial Agriculture). The next important key term is Confined
Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO). According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a
Confined Animal Feeding Operation is a large operation where animals are kept and raised in
confined situations (USDA, Animal Feeding Operations). The final term I want to define before
starting is monoculture. According to Merriam–Webster Dictionary, monoculture is "the cultivation
or growth of a single crop or organism especially on agriculture or forest land" (Merriam–Webster,
monoculture).

Should Meat Consumption Be The Standard For Farming?
The average American eats over 200 pounds of meat each year (Food, Inc. 2008). Meat
consumption has not always been so excessive; however, this recently high demand has resulted in
food companies scaling up and vastly transforming their methods of production for the sake of
yielding the largest amount of meat at the lowest expense. In fact, as of now over 99% of farm
animals in the U.S. are raised in factory farms, which are controlled by only a select few companies
(Food, Inc. 2008).With this relatively new monopoly of intensive farming have come adverse side
effects, which are outlaid on all U.S. communities as a whole. In order to cease this wayward
progression in its tracks, we must advocate as a country for farming to reform in favor of its most
logical, humane, and healthy standards. Pasture–raised farming should become the standard in
American meat production because pasture–raised farming is in more ethical than the current
industrial practices.
Before I go on any further, I must first explain what is intended by the term "pasture–raised".
"Pasture–raised" farming refers to the animals having continuous and unconfined access to pasture
throughout the entirety of their life cycle. This model greatly contrasts the confined, indoor, grain

Omnivore's Dilemm The Future Of Organic Farming
An arising food category in America is anything organic. Over the years, several local grocery stores
organic section is rapidly increasing. Michael Pollan, who wrote Omnivore's Dilemma, is a New
York Times bestselling author. Pollan stated, "Forty years ago there was no such category as
'organic' food. Today it is a $20–billion business– the fastest growing part of the food industry."
(112) With organic farming becoming more common, there are many changes being made that are
resulting in significant outcomes. One of the substantial changes while using organic farming is the
improved treatment and health of animals. Further knowledge and awareness of the importance on
how organic farming is better for the lives of animals, as well as our health is needed. Gaining more

Executive Summary
Intensive pig farming is an agricultural industry that operates by raising live pigs for slaughtering
which will then be turned into pork for human consumption. Piggeries, as the firm is called, serve as
a major food source in the Philippines, with the highest grossing per capita consumption among red

or backyard farming is continually being pushed into the periphery, as the waste and smell, among
other economic externalities find little tolerance among the urban population. In the United States,

competitive prices and efficient processes available to firms. Here in the Philippines, the situation is

Ethical Issues On Factory Farming
Throughout the years of society our views on factory farming have drastically changed. Many
people used to think that our biggest problem with factory farming was how we would mutilate and
torture innocent animals. Animals would be put in a situation where they would be force fed, and
sometimes beaten by humans, the unthinkable has already happened and now we have to think
about the long term effects of Factory Farming. However, as significant as the ethical argument is,

Food born illnesses are a killer today. Factory farms are not mandated by the government to run
bacteria tests on their food products and with having nothing to make sure rules are followed private
companies can say whatever they want to make it seem like they are creating a universal product

It is at the core of the industrial food revolution. A common crop that is cultivated is corn, it is

It has taken years to master the practice of farming, from the raising and selling of cattle, pigs, and
poultry, to the ever long process of planting, growing and harvesting crops. Farming has always
been a necessity to the everyday life, providing food and jobs around the world. With the increasing
population there is a constant push for more and more food on less land every year, so today 's
farming has been divided into two main categories, factory and traditional. Factory farming is large
corporation farming, defined as a system of rearing livestock using intensive methods by which
cattle, pigs, or poultry are confined indoors and under strictly controlled conditions. Traditional
farming, on the other hand, is very simply defined as the activity or business of growing crops and
raising livestock. The main difference being that traditional farming is done on a much smaller scale
and is typically family owned. After looking through the differences in how crops are grown and
harvested, and how animals are raised on each farm, there is a push for traditional farms because
they are safer, more organic, and both livestock and family friendly.

Why We Should Eat Pork
It seems clear that, there are various different reasons why we consume pork and many people
would feel that all these reasons are enough to justify and explain its consumption. This could be
down to the nutritional value of the meat, the idea that if we didn't eat pigs then they wouldn't exist
in the first place and the philosophical views on the consumption of meat in the first place.
However, my research has also shown that there are many reasons why people feel we should not

Animal cruelty is categorised into either intentional acts of violence or, neglect based cases where
an owner is unable to provide for an animal and broadly as unnecessary or unreasonable harm.
These are general statements of what can be considered animal abuse as most animal welfare acts
and legislation do not have a specific definition themselves. Generally they have examples of what
is considered animal cruelty which all fall under the two categories above.
Some of these example include: physically beating an animal, killing inhumanly, transport or
housing not suitable or not meeting the animal's needs or neglect in the form of; nutrients, living
conditions or space, treatment of injury or disease and attention.
Animal cruelty is also not just limited to physical abuse or harm, animals can quiet easily suffer
psychological harm from neglect, being in a constant state of stress/fear or scaring from physical
attacks.

Factory farming is the industrial process in which animals and the products they produce are mass
produced. Roughly around two–thirds of farm animals are raised in factory farms worldwide, and in
Australia, this figure is close to 500 million. (2)

of practice do not cover these animals, resulting in legal cruelty.

Factory farming defined as a large farm that raises and processes animals for their meat. Factory
farms are not anything like typical farms; they are a lot larger, and there are no green pastures for
the animals to graze on. A factory farm is all about size and scale, filling every inch that they can
with animals. A factory farm can contain over one thousand cattle, twenty five hundred pigs and one
hundred twenty five chickens. These animals are all pushed closely together, barely given enough
room to move around. Their manure is is a large contributor to greenhouse gasses, and it often seeps
into waterways and pollutes them. Factory farming is not socially sustainable as it violates animal
rights, and it is not economically sustainable as it pollutes the air and water.
Factory farming sees animals as simple food products, not as living and breathing beings. "Factory
farming continues to grow around the world as a low–cost way of producing animal products for
human consumption. However, many of the practices associated with intensive animal farming have
been criticized by public health professionals and animal welfare advocates."(Anomaly, 2015) The

The mistreatment of animals in the United States is often overlooked as a major issue. Many
Americans will often show disdain for countries that consume animals that they consider to be
family, such as cats and dogs. However, most Americans do not see the hypocrisy in the
maltreatment of animals that are eaten, such as cows, pigs, and chickens. While many farms try their
best to provide humane conditions, there are over 465,000 factory farms in the United States, where
animals are treated as nothing more than a product. Factory farming is a relatively recent
agricultural practice that began around the 1950's (Factory Farming). Factory Farming is a basic
term that refers to an industrial animal production facility. There are two classifications for factory
farms; "concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO)," and "animal feeding operation (AFO)
(Factory Farming)." When a factory farm is created it is originally classified as an AFO but once it
meets a certain size or it is classified by the Environmental Protection Agency as a "significant
contributor of pollutants to waters of the United States" it upgraded to a CAFO (Factory Farming).
In this essay I argue that the practice of factory farming should be prohibited because of the
inhumane treatment of animals as well as the negative effects on humans and the environment. It

Informative Speech On Factory Farming "It is possible, I think, to say that a Christian agriculture is formed upon the understanding that it is sinful for people to misuse or destroy what they did not make. The creation is a unique, irreplaceable gift, therefore to be used with humility, respect, and skill"– Wendell Berry (Berry, The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture). This quote speaks numbers to me. I believe that agriculture, both animals and plants, should be farmed with humility, respect and skill, as said by Wendell Berry. It has, however, become a concern of mine that this is not the case in large industrial farms. The purpose of my speech is to persuade my audience that there is a need for large scale production of food to feed the growing population, but there needs to be some restrictions placed on certain practices in factory farming. I first became interested in agriculture when I joined 4–H and have since learned more through farming and studying animal science here at Penn State. Even though we need factory farming, factory farming should have restrictions because Confined Animal Feeding Operations and monoculture practices are doing more harm than good. Before we get started, I want to address and define a few key terms that I will be using throughout my speech. First term I want to address is factory farming. I may also refer to this as industrial farming or industrial agriculture. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, factory farming, or industrial agriculture is "the system of chemically intensive food production developed in the decades after World War II, featuring enormous single–crop farms and animal production facilities" (Union of Concerned Scientists, Industrial Agriculture). The next important key term is Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO). According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a Confined Animal Feeding Operation is a large operation where animals are kept and raised in confined situations (USDA, Animal Feeding Operations). The final term I want to define before starting is monoculture. According to Merriam–Webster Dictionary, monoculture is "the cultivation or growth of a single crop or organism especially on agriculture or forest land" (Merriam–Webster, monoculture). Now ... Meat consumption has not always been so excessive; however, this recently high demand has resulted in food companies scaling up and vastly transforming their methods of production for the sake of yielding the largest amount of meat at the lowest expense.
