A Middle Manager Within A Large Government Agency
Topic: You are a middle manager within a large government agency. To better perform your job and to enhance organizational performance, you believe
you need more power.
Drawing on what you learned in Level 4 about types of power and different power bases, and being sensitive to ethical issues, develop and describe a
strategy to increase your power so as to improve organizational delivery of services. .
I am actually a middle manager in one of the county agencies. In my line of work there are many layers of responsibilities. Some special assignments
and projects by far exceed the legitimate power that was given to me and requires a higher level of power and authority than my middle manager power
can provide. It is also apparent to me ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For me, power is an ability to influence, inspire and mobilize individuals or groups to achieve their goals and objectives while maintaining dignity,
moral and mutual respect. Empowerment, however, is giving or sharing power with others to enable their creativity, contribution and participation in
collective power and it should come not only from others but also from within individuals. Empowerment is a new style of power that requires
participatory management and shared responsibility.
There are several power types and power bases to consider, but I will describe more those powers that, in my opinion, should increase and extend my
current power. By my nature I don't prefer any power that would encourage any kind of violence as bases for power, any power that would suppress
authentic communication and shared decision–making process.
I feel that power based on healthy and positive competition is a better way to go and should hopefully inspire all my team members to achieve better
results. Additionally, nutrient and integrative powers are more appealing to me since their implementation is more fitting to my leadership style and I
strongly believe will bring better results. I simply believe

Webers Ideal Type Bureaucracy
Topic 1: An Analysis to Weber "Ideal Type" Bureaucracy
1 Introduction
Max Weber's study of bureaucracy look for develops a historical and sociological account of the rise of modern organizations. (Linstead et al.2004
p130). He used an ideal type to analysis appear of the bureaucracy form of organization. The ideal type, according to Weber, is a tool used to identify
the characteristics of social phenomena such as bureaucracies. The ideal type is used by Weber to make a distinction from other forms of organization
(Linstead et al.2004 p130). The Prussian Church, Army and Civil Services are the examples of this bureaucratic form. Also, Weber saw a power

3 Power and Authority
3.1Introduction to power and authority
As Weber suggested one of the way to understanding how organizations change was to study the power and authority. In Weber's model, there are
differences between power and authority. Power means the chance that someone within a social relationship, and will be in a position to perform his
own wishes that despite the obstruction. Power influences who gets what, when, and how. But what is authority? Authority was defined as the
probability of certain controls or the orders which being obeyed by a group (Weber 1968 p955).
Organizations or leaders explore legitimacy and believability of their actions in different ways through the exercise of authority. Weber said that, for
lots of exercises of authority in organizations, some of

Problems Facing Students
Although I do not have students that I associate with in my area to identify some of the serious problems confronting them today, but based upon the
reoccurring social media headlines and personal experiences; I felt that some of most serious problems confronting students in school today are family
involvement, technology usage, bullying, students' attitudes and behavior, drugs and the closely relationship between teacher and students. There are
many problems or factors that contributes to the problems and social stigmatized in which students may face based upon their back ground and where
they are from. One student may face poverty, racial, and/or discrimination issues while others may not; therefore, the many problems would likely be
based on a case by case issue.
Family involvement is one of the greatest factors in pushing a child to his/her potential boundaries and creativity through encouragement and
acceptance. Having the positive influences of family involvement can make or break a child's education along with social, emotional, physical and
behavioral problems. Having positive family involvement influences and increases the likelihood of advancement in educational studies in which
encourages a child to study harder, less stressful environment, having more focus on their work and educational goals because to the child; he or she is

Essay Compare And Contrast Altemeyer's Approach To...
Outline the similarities and differences between Adorno et al.'s (1950) and Altemeyer's (1981) approach to authoritarianism
The rise of fascism in Germany in the 1930's and the acts of aggression and atrocities committed by the Nazis during the Second World War led to
questions being asked as to why some people where prone to such levels of violence and hate in the name of political ideology. The 'Authoritarian
Personality' was a concept suggested in 1950 by German sociologist Theodor Adorno and colleagues following their research identifying the
personality traits believed to allow an individual to be bias towards and follow a fascist ideology. Although initially met with great excitement, over
time the authoritarian personality alone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(2012). Although Altemeyer's research also recognised and supported these findings his concept of authoritarianism was different. He defined RWA not
as personality type with fixed characteristics but as a set of three attitudes similar to three of the characteristics Adorno et al also used to describe the
authoritarian personality:
Authoritarian submission: A high level of respect and submission to perceived legitimate authority figures or establishments. Authoritarian aggression:
Aggressiveness directed against targets identified by the established authorities. Conventionalism: The aversion to new ideas with a preference towards
social norms which should be adhered to by all of the individual's society (Bobbio et al 2007).
Although Altemeyer agreed with Adorno et al on what the behavioral and attitudinal features of authoritarianism were, a key difference he put forward
was his interpretation of where it actually came from. Adorno et al took a psychoanalytical approach, as first popularised by Sigmund Freud in the late
19th century to the explanation of the causes of authoritarianism. They claimed children who experienced a strong level of parental discipline

In "Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem", Erich Fromm warns "human history began with an act of disobedience, and it is not unlikely
that it will be terminated by an action of obedience" (622). Fromm effectively supports the claim while revealing that disobedience is the key concept
standing between freedom and the end of human history. Fromm's article was published during the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United
States. Tension from the possibility of the end of the world due to the likelihood of a nuclear war between the two countries was at an all–time high.

The American government tries to suppress any information that could lead to disobedience or disorder among the people. The people's impulse to obey
the government is allowing the current president of the United States, who John D. Gartner, a psychotherapist from Johns Hopkins University Medical
School, identified as a mentally ill man to control the government. According to US News, Gartner stated, "'Donald Trump is dangerously mentally ill
and temperamentally incapable of being president,' says Gartner ... Trump, Gartner says, has 'malignant narcissism,' which is different from narcissistic
personality disorder and which is incurable" (qtd. in Milligan). The obedience of a power might be negatively affecting our foreign affairs and allowing
a man to ignore and violate the Constitution. The current president is using fear to get the American citizens to obey him by using different minorities
as scapegoats. America's obedience of this man may cause a significant fall in the standard of living for the typical working American. This unchecked
obedience is another example of a case where disobedience may prevent terrible choices that could cause severe damage to the world we live

Differences Between Power And Authority
Question 1: Distinguish between power and authority. Do you believe the foundation of criminal justice organizations is power or authority? Why?
Give examples in everyday criminal justice life that reflect the differences among these concepts.
Answer: According to Stojkovic, Kalinich, and Klofas (2015), power can be defined as "A construct that underscores that importance of how
compliance among subordinates is achieved" (p. 288). Power can be at both a person and organizational level and there are five forms, including
coercive power, reward power, legitimate power, referent power, and expert power (Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas, 2015). In contrast, authority is
"demoting the compliance with particular directives essential for achieving a common or shared goal" (Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas, 2015, p. 290).
The three forms of author include, traditional authority, charismatic authority, and legal authority (Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas, 2015). Power can
become authority over time and authority is useful for when individuals must be supervised within an organization (Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas,
2015). I believe the foundation of criminal justice organizations is authority because everyone is trying to attain the same goal and be successful
(Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas, 2015). If power is distributed among too many employees, then that could lead to role conflict (Stojkovic, Kalinich, &
Klofas, 2015). It is important to have supervisors with authority over

The People's Republic Of China
The People's Republic of China (PRC) has experienced unprecedented economic growth under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)
since 1978. In his speech "The Present Situation and the Tasks Before Us," Deng Xiaoping emphasized the importance of economic reform: "The
superiority [of the socialist system] should manifest itself in many ways, but first and foremost it must be revealed in the rate of economic growth and
in economic efficiency" (Deng 1980). With this explicit commitment to growth, Deng links the political legitimacy of the CCP, as the monopolist of
power within the PRC, to economic performance. Therefore, the inevitable economic slowdown in the PRC will undermine the legitimacy of the
authoritarian CCP and force political liberalization. Given this statement, I suspect two major questions have arisen: (1) How is economic slowdown in
China inevitable and (2) Could the CCP just adapt its basis of authoritarian legitimacy without political liberalization? I will address both questions in
full after examining the history of economic reform in the PRC.
Economic Growth in the PRC from 1978 to 2016
The story of economic reorganization starts in 1978 after the Cultural Revolution when Deng, acting as the paramount leader of the CCP, replaced
"collective farming" with the "household–responsibility" system in which farmers were allowed to sell extra grain on the open market. With increased
incentives, agricultural production increased by 47 percent from

Trifles By Susan Glaspell Has An Authority Over The Text
Authority of text has been a debatable topic for centuries and it is still a controversial subject nowadays. Especially it is relevant for drama texts, due to
the fact that they are written to be played on stage and adapted by other directors, hence, they can be modified through their own interpretation. While
ancient dramas face up copyright ownership dilemma too, more modern plays just struggle with playwright's authority; in other words, the extent to
which playwright can be called an owner of a play. This essay will use Trifles by Susan Glaspell as a core example in order to define "authority of text"
and describe how it applies to – or is perhaps resisted by – the play. It will discuss the extent to which Glaspell has an authority over the text, by
analysing it and two other adaptations of the play. Finally, a personal opinion will be offered based on the weight of evidence. ... Show more content on

There are two obvious (perhaps there can be more) understandings of the authority of text: historical and more philosophical. What historians question
sometimes in old texts is their ownership, because the information about an author is either lost or not proven, hence they do not know who textual
authority belongs to. This problem rarely happens with modern texts, as the author is known, however, they, as all other texts, face up the problem of
adaptation without losing its authenticity. Specifically, it concerns drama text and performance relationship, but nowadays, with the rise of cinema, it is
also related to epic texts. How much authority does a playwright have over his text? Can a director modify a text without crossing playwright's
authority? To what extent authority of drama belongs to a playwright? This essay will focus on this understanding of textual authority, trying to answer
these questions and other

Analysis Of Norman Mailer 's The Naked And The Dead Essay
In this excerpt of Norman Mailer's The Naked and the Dead, the story follows an interaction between General Cummings and his aide Robert Hearn. In
their confrontation, Hearn mocks the legitimacy of Cummings's authority as general. Cummings does his best to assert himself, but he realizes that his
power is illegitimate. In examining this conflict, Mailer's story covers important sociological concepts, including the characterization of symbolism,
legitimacy of rational authority, the looking–glass self, the idea of communion, conflict theory, dominance, anomie, mores, and the power hierarchy.
Symbols transcend objective significance, as their importance comes from the ideas associated with them. As Emile Durkheim says in his essay, Sacred
Objects as Symbols, "...the sacred character assumed by an object is not implied in the intrinsic properties of this latter: it is added to them" ("Sacred
Objects as Symbols"). This idea becomes apparent in Cummings's appalled reaction to seeing the cigarette butt and match mashed into the floor.
Although seemingly inconsequential, Cummings views the cigarette butt mashed into the floor as a sign of disrespect to his authority.
In his essay, Legitimate Order and Types of Authority, Max Weber discusses the idea of legitimacy: a public respect for and acceptance of power that is
based on tradition, rationality, or charismatic traits of the leader. Further, Weber comments on the efficacy of deviance to curb these types of legitimacy,

Laurel Creek Health Care Center V. Bishop Essay
Laurel Creek Health Care Center v. Bishop
Court of Appeals of Kentucky,____S.W.3d___(2010)
FACTS
Gilbert Bishop was admitted to Laurel Creek Health Care Center on July 23, 2002, after arriving via ambulance without family present. During that
examination, Gilbert communicated to Laurel Creek staff that he could not use his hands well enough to write or hold a pencil. Gilbert was otherwise
found to be mentally competent. Gilbert's sister, Rachel Combs, arrived after Gilbert, she offered to sign the admissions forms, but Laurel Creek
employees told her that it was their policy to have the patient's spouse sign the admissions papers if the patient was unable to sign them. Rachel also
testified that Gilbert asked her to get his wife, Anna ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
REASON
Laurel Creek first argues that this is a case of actual agency and that Anna Bishop has actual authority as Gilbert's agent to sign the admissions
paperwork as is therefore bound by the arbitration agreement therein.
We agree with Laurel Creek that Gilbert created an actual agency relationship between him and his wife. According to his sister, Rachel, Gilbert
specifically asked that his wife be brought to the nursing home so that she could sign the admissions documents for him, and Anna acted upon that
delegation of authority and signed the admissions papers. This is consistent with the creation of actual authority as described in the Restatement (Third)
of Agency § 2.01, comment c (2006). The Restatement explains the rationale for the creation of actual agency in three steps. First, "the principal
manifests assent to be affected by the agent's action." In the instant case, Gilbert asked that Anna come to the hospital to sign the papers for him.
Second, "the agent's actions establish the agent's consent to act on the principal's behalf." Here, Anna signed all the admissions papers per her husband's
request and therefore consented to act on Gilbert's behalf. Third, by acting within such authority, the agent affects the principal's legal relations with
third parties. Clearly here, Anna's actions affected Gilbert's relations with Laurel Creek, a third party.
The trial court acknowledged that Gilbert had the

become heroines for adolescents for over a decade. The Disney Corporation along with its princess collection is recognized as a powerful influencer on
children's media; thus, teaching societal norms for target adolescent groups. Disney's collection of princesses have spanned over 78 years, from the first
generation Disney princess movies (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty's Aurora) to the second generation Disney princess
movies (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Aladdin's Jasmine, Pocahontas) to the new era princesses (The Princess and the Frog's Tiana
and Tangled's Rapunzel). A researcher noted that, Disney continuously controls cultural authority and traditional sites of learning which include: public
schools, religious institutions, and the institution of family (Giroux, 1995). Numerous research has studied the underlying stereotypical constructs
presented in Disney animated films including: gender, age and race. For example, England, Descartes and Collier–Meek recently conducted a study on
gender roles and its portrayal in popular Disney films.

Max Weber on Society Essay
Max Weber on Society
Max Weber was one of the world's greatest sociologists and wrote a lot about the capitalist world he lived in. He had a different conception of capitalist
society than most of his contemporaries. He looked at capitalism from all the different aspects that the philosophy was made of. Some of these aspects
are state power, authority, class inequality, imperialism, and bureaucracy. To understand how Weber thought one must look at each area separately then
put them all together in a global package.
Weber describes history in terms of the constant struggle for power. He bases all significant historical changes on the power struggle that caused them.
Weber describes power as a zero sum game. That means for one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unlike rational–legal authority, traditional authority is not codified in impersonal rules but is usually invested in a hereditary line or invested in a
particular office by a higher power. Finally, charismatic authority rests on the appeal of leaders who claim allegiance because of the force of their
extraordinary personalities.
Weber does not feel that the power of a class is a very important issue. Weber feels that classes are only important, within the struggle for power, when
they state they are part of their class in their actions. Classes, along with status groups, are just passive members in society. Only if a political party
solely represents the class, then it becomes active. This unimportance of classes shows Weber's feelings that the economic issues within capitalism do
not effect authority or the struggle for power.
Imperialism, in Weber's mind, is not a matter of economics. He states that imperialism more of a political tool. It is used as a tool of prestige for the
elites and way to promote nationalism among the masses. The idea of imperialism was around before capitalism, so it is natural to Weber to say that it
could not have been created by capitalism. Imperialism did, however, appeal to all members of the ruling classes. It appeals to the prestige of the old
elites and it is the source of money for the new elites; but the appeal of prestige is the more important factor to Weber.

The social–culture difference that I would have to take into consideration are that many Mexicans only speak English. I would have to get bilingual

A & PAnd Barn Burning Comparison
Sammy from John Updike's "A&P" and Sarty from William Faulkner's "Barn Burning" are two great examples of young people raising their standards
and doing what they believe is right. In "A&P", Sammy is nineteen years old and works at a local grocery store named the A&P. His life changes the
day he quits his job after defending three girls that are "called out" by Lengel, the manager, for breaking the unwritten dress code. In "Barn Burning",
Sarty is a ten year old boy who struggles between the fine line of right and wrong when his father, Abner Snopes, is put on trial for burning down a
barn. When his father attempts to burn down another barn, Sarty takes charge and warns the owner. "A&P" and "Barn Burning" are short story classics

Sarty never justifies his father's actions and is aware that if he allows things to remain the same, he will become a product of his environment. This is
his motive for warning Abner's next barn burning victim and his chance to move on with his life.
The time periods and locations in which "A&P" and "Barn Burning" take place are very different. Sammy lives in a more favorable time in the United
States than Sarty. "A&P" is set in a small town north of Boston, Massachusetts around 1960. At this time, the United States was the main military
manufacturer and financial power in the capitalist world. The "Hippie Movement" just started and shocked many traditional families with a new way of
living. Sarty lives in Mississippi about twenty years after the Civil War. Life was tough for Mississippians post Civil War. The Southern states were in
debt and devastation from the war was everywhere. Although America was transforming into a more modern country in both stories, the time periods in
which they live are completely opposite.
Sammy and Sarty are two protagonists that have to mature beyond normal circumstances and experience the "real world" at tender ages. Each character
is forced to grow up and refine themselves in their darkest hour. Sammy and Sarty are both dissatisfied with their authority figures; however, the time
periods in which they live take place in different

Before Milgram's findings, the fact that people were inclined to obey to authority figures was already realized. He just confirmed this belief. Milgram
followed effective steps by using precise procedures. He made sure that the experiment reflected features of an actual situation in which a person would
obey to an authority figure: offering compensation (monetary reward in this experiment), being under pressure (Prods 1 to 4 in this case), and
mentioning that the person who obeys can withdraw. These features can also be seen in a situation where a soldier is commanded to fire, for instance. A
soldier will get a monetary compensation, is under pressure to obey because he chose to be part of the military, and he knows that he can resign at any
time. Milgram created an experiment so precise and detailed that more than enough evidence was demonstrated. In this experiment, subjects are
explained that this is "a 'learning experiment' to ... study the effects of punishment on memory" (4). Yet, the real intention here is to measure the
participants' compliance towards the experimenter. This controversy is unethical as subjects are volunteering for a cause that does not exist. They are
misled since they are not exposed to the real purpose of this study. Nevertheless, this experiment was appropriate. Throughout the process, participants

Theories Of Power, Authority And Legitimacy
Introduction
In this reading report, it discusses the various perspectives about power, authority and legitimacy in the chapter titled Power, Authority and the State by
Shaun Best. In this chapter Best draws various theories from a number of theorists that contributes to power, authority and legitimacy. From their
perspectives, three have been chosen which are Anthony Giddens, Max Weber, and Michel Foucault. Their perspectives on the topic will be
summarised and how power, authority and legitimacy can be seen in society that supports their theories.

Charismatic authority is solely based on the charisma of an individual that is seen as a leader and the individuals' personality and character is essential.
Traditional authority is when a title is transferred from one generation to the next through tradition and belief system. Rational legal authority is the
legitimate power that is seen as acceptable by citizens because there are rules and set of laws that gives the state authority. Illegitimate power is a form
of punishment centred/ coercion that citizens do not adhere too and go against the given rules. (Best, 2001: 14–15)
Michel Foucault
"Foucault emphasized on how power is the idea of struggle and the resistance and how power operates at all levels in society. Foucault mentions how
people are mere test subjects for example he touches on how the state make use of resources to gather information about individuals, which he calls
bio–power" (Best, 2001: 19–20). "There are three modes of objection that explain how people become subjects. The first mode is dividing practices
which involve the exclusion of people who are seen as a threat to society. The second mode is the scientific classification, which focuses on the
hierarchical observations. The third mode is subjectification, which focuses on citizen of society and everything else as being seen as a subject, it also

Power By Niccolo Machiavelli, Hannah Arendt, And Karl Emil
Power is defined as a political action coerced to exercise or to pursuit. It influences and controls the content of political power. The theory of power is
argued by Niccolo Machiavelli, Hannah Arendt, and Karl Emil (Max) Weber. Machiavelli's position stood that power is held by individuals. As for
Arendt, she believed power was maintained within groups, while Weber believed power lied in institutions. Niccolo Machiavelli based his position of
individual power on his book The Prince. The Prince extends Machiavelli's analysis of how to acquire and maintain political power. There are four
types of principalities discussed: hereditary principalities, that are inherited by the ruler through fortune and family royalty, mixed principalities,
territories that are annexed to the ruler's existing territories, new principalities, namely the Papal States belonging to the Catholic church, and new
principalities, those states that may be acquired by one's own power, by the power of others or by the will of the people. There is simplicity for a prince
that inherits a state through fortune or the efforts of others due to easy ascent to power, but maintaining the power is more difficult. For a prince that
conquers a state through force and power has difficulty conquering the state but has an easy time maintaining the state. Machiavelli explained three
ways in maintaining a state: despoilment, allow the people to live under their own rules, and residing in the state. Despoilment is the act

The Avatar Is The Ideal Version Of Oneself
SIMS is a fan favorite video game, where an avatar can be created that is the ideal version of oneself. The avatar can marry, have a family, land a dream
job, and if the individual is so inclined, the avatar can even kill. As SIMs demonstrates, humans can currently create avatars to do out bidding, to
behave as some aspect of the individual's personality wishes it could do. While this creative process is limited to video games, the theoretical process
suggests that an alternative or parallel reality exists where an individual can live through another person, in a separate field from his or her actual
physical being. In this other reality, the individual can be who he or she wants to be and behave however they choose, with the goal of living out their
most intimate desires, good or bad. Such is the plot of Being John Malkovich, whereby Craig, a puppeteer who lives his fantasies through his puppets,
ultimately finds a portal that allows him to live through and control the actor, John Malkovich. Panopticism is a central theme in Being John
Malkovich; Panopticism is a mechanism for gaining power and keeping it, where criminals who are constantly under surveillance, internalize fear and
involuntarily take into their mind the concepts of the authority figure. Such a mechanism allows power to easily by disseminated without being
weakened. Being John Malkovich demonstrates the idea of panopticism by portraying the loss of security for free will and individual thinking. This is

The Case Of Legal Drinking Age
The final situation I have had concerning unclear boundaries involved me and a professor. This individual was someone I had grown to know and
respect and took several courses under. The incident occurred after I had graduated from Western Carolina University with my bachelor's degrees while
I was living in Cullowhee over the summer. I was invited to the professor's house along with another former student to eat dinner with him and his wife.
While we were eating the meal, the professor gave me and the other student a glass of wine to go with dinner. Even though I was of legal drinking age
and was no longer a student of the professor's, it felt strange to have a professor provide me alcohol.
Also, I felt uncomfortable being in the professor's home since it was the first time I had socialized with a professor outside of a school environment. I
later discussed the event with the other student to inquire if the situation also made her uncomfortable. The individual disclosed that she did not feel

Referent Power in Leadership
Referent Power
I. Topic of Inquiry
It is important for managers to understand the sources of power and influence as they must rely upon the cooperation of subordinates in order to be
successful. Strong managers rely upon more than just authority they also use leadership skills and power to obtain the most productivity from their
staff. According to French and Raven (1959) there are five sources of power. Referent power seems to be the most influential and the least affected by
change. To quote Paul Argenti,
"Coercive power relies on the fact that people fear you, and reward power is only effective so long as people value the rewards you have to offer.
Legitimate power relies on your rank in the company hierarchy, and recent events ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
3.) Nurturing. Another component of developing referent leadership is nurturing. According to Thompson (1996) a referent leader takes an interest in
the feelings of other people and exhibits concern for them. They know the "aspirations, fears, capabilities, and attitudes" (Henderson & Moskos, 1985,
p. 112) of others and they help people feel capable and good about themselves (DuBrin, 1995). These traits help to create friendship and over a longer
period of time loyalty.
4.) Being a good role model / Being trustworthy. In order to have people drawn to you it is important that they respect you. Being a good role model,
being truthful and being trustworthy will reinforce that respect.
How is it used?
Referent power can be used to influence opinion because it can create conscious or unconscious acceptance of the agent's opinion with little or no
question. It can also be used to influence behaviors. As stated by Locke (2003) "When identification is strong, imitation [of the agent's behavior] is
likely to occur even without any conscious effort" (p. 247) to influence. And the target person may not be consciously aware that they are emulating the
agent. The stronger the identification or admiration the more powerful influence can be. This was expressed well by Locke (2003) "People are usually
willing to do special favors for a friend, and they are more likely

The Importance Of Comprehensive Site Investigations And...
The importance of comprehensive site investigations and getting the right report, and by an EPA accredited auditor can be seen in the court case
Charben Haulage Pty Ltd v Environmental & Earth Sciences Pty Ltd (2004) FCA 403. In this case Caltex had obtained development consent from the
local council to decommission a suburban service station and remediate it to residential standards. A condition of the consent was that an auditor
accredited by the EPA would sign off the completed decontamination.
A consultant issued a report to Caltex stating that the former service station site was suitable for residential use, and the sale of the service station was
completed relying on the report. The contract of sale contained a condition that the site would be suitable for purposes permitted by its current business
zoning (in which residential flats were also permitted). However, the council then rejected the consultants report, as an EPA accredited auditor had not
signed it off.
The purchaser engaged its own accredited auditor, who recommended reporting to the authority that the site posed significant risk of harm to human
health and the environment because of contaminated groundwater, off site migration, vapors and the presence of residential units down slope. Work
stopped for 10 months, with the council instituting proceedings in the land and environment court to restrain work until an accredited auditor had
validated the site, as required by its development consent.

Politics, Culture, and identities
I. Politics, Culture and Identities.
1. Describe and discuss theoretical models of political legitimacy, for instance Max Weber's "ideal types".
It is remarkable that in every group within any society that is based on hierarchies' rules, they are dominant and dominated individuals. Although, in
order for a society to function the "dominated" should be willing to obey the "dominants", which requires legitimacy.
This part of the exam work aims to present theoretical models of political legitimacy, with focus on Max Weber's "ideal types".
Max Weber establishes that it is very necessary to have political legitimacy to keep order in the society and everything that revolves around the society.
According to Max Weber's studies there are three "ideal types" of political legitimacy: traditional, charismatic and legal–rational, and they all have one
main fact in common, in order to function there has to people ready to obey.
In this context Weber tells us that within society there must be elements that hold the power or having authority legitimately recognized forms, and
elements that do not hold the power. In the State, for example, Weber explains that, it is necessary that people obey the authority of those in power
where this authority is legitimately recognized, so that it works. And thus we perceive that domination has always been and is a strong presence within
society. The dominance often occurs due to the numerous forms of interests, whether in its various forms. And of

Social System in Gabriel Marquez’s Chronicle of a Death...
Social System in Gabriel Marquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold and Albert Camus's The Stranger
"Like father, like son" the old saying goes. And naturally this is so, for if the parent lacks morals, logically the child will too. Just as parents shape their
children, authority figures shape their societies. Authority figures have great impact on the common people, for if they act in dishonest or fraudulent
manners, the society considers it acceptable to do the same. Such reflections between authority figures and society are seen throughout Gabriel
Marquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold and Albert Camus's The Stranger. With societies constantly looking to authority figures for guidance, Marquez
and Camus satirically depict folly in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, the community does not prepare to show the bishop their support for the Church, but instead in hopes that the gifts would bring individual
benefits. Through Marquez's narration, a reader realizes the facade that the society creates. By immediately establishing the religious community as a
self–seeking body, Marquez paves the way for a parallelism between the authority figures and society.
The religious authority figures referred to within Marquez's novel, specifically the bishop, prove their hypocrisy according to the morals of
Christianity/Catholicism. Commonly accepted, Christianity teaches a person the qualities of forgiveness, acceptance, and love. Thus, a strong religious
leader teaches his people this behavior andguides the community to live by such ideals. Ironically, the bishop in Chronicle of A Death Foretold exhibits
great apathy toward his people. For some reason that remains unmentioned throughout the novel, the bishop has an aversion to the Caribbean island. In
fact, he only blesses the town due to mere obligation. The blessing shows little devotion, for the bishop simply makes "the sign of the cross in the air
opposite the crowd on the pier," a blessing "without malice or inspiration"(Marquez 19). As the highest leader of the Church, the bishop ought to
promote Christian principles throughout his actions. The

Characteristics Of Modern Bureaucracy
Weber talks about modern bureaucracy in both the private and public sector as having specific principles that they need to have. Weber said " First, it is
based on the general principle of precisely defined and organized across the board competencies of the various offices. These competencies are
underpinned by rules, laws, or administrative regulations.". Essentially Weber was saying that in order for a modern bureaucracy to exist in either the
private or the public sector there has to be a rigidly defined division of labor of a particular bureaucratic system that clearly states or identifies the tasks
and duties to be performed, it has to have an established chain of command that has the capacity to coerce others to comply by rules and regulations,
people with certain qualifications and certifications are hired which helps to execute the assigned duties assigned to them in a timely and efficient
manner. An ideal Weberian model has several characteristics that can be noted in the past and can be see in today's beaurocratic systems, particularly in
larger scale systems. The roles in these ideal systems are very specialized and career oriented with a systemic salary structure. The recruitment for these
roles are very competitive and is based solely on merit, there are uniform principles of placement, promotion, and transfer in an administrative system
within a hierarchy that holds the people within it accountable. The authority within these systems are impersonal, the rules

Kindertransport Essay
Discuss the role of the Ratcatcher in this extract and elsewhere in the play.
The play 'Kindertransport' written by Diane Samuels rotates immensely around the Ratcatcher. The Ratcatcher's role in this extract and the whole play
can be interpreted in many ways.
The given extract begins with Helga reluctantly agreeing to read 'The Ratcatcher' as a bedtime story to Eva. The reasons for Helga's reluctance remain
ambiguous as the play proceeds with Helga reading the book simultaneous to Faith who is in a different setting also reading the same book. The
following scene is of Eva frantically leaving in a train.
Helga's hesitancy in this extract as Eva requests The Ratcatcher books suggests an underlying implication that the tale is similar ... Show more content

As the play proceeds the Ratcatcher also takes upon a number of different characters such as the Nazi Border Official, the English Organiser, the
Station Guard, etc. All of these are portray threatening and patronising characters that stereotype her or simply authoritative figures. This reflects the
author's attempt to present to the reader the different viewpoints of the society about the Jews and refugees such as Eva.
In addition another key factor which has a significant impact on the manner in which the Ratcatcher's role can be interpreted is the language used to
describe him in the given extract. He is described as someone who "hisses" the aggressive words "I will find you." The use of the strong verb "I will"
indicates a threatening and predatory tone. A similarly threatening tone is used further into the play by an officer who exclaims "Sir! Sorry Sir"
indicating Eva to repeat after him. The stage directions also state that the officer "bodysearches Eva" which reflect his threatening and patronising
character. The similar character of authority figures to the Ratcatcher suggests that perhaps these figures are just the reality version of the Ratcatcher.
The 'Ratcatcher Music' is one of the factors frequently referred to in the stage directions of the play. Soon in the play it is evident that the music is often
added into the scene in which

What Distinguishes Weber's Account Of Power
"What distinguishes Weber's account of power from Arendt's account of power?"
The concept of power has been a topic of interest of many sociologists as they seek to define the term. Ensuring that the exercise of power is legitimate
is a key integral to the concept of power in present day. However, although the power is seen as legitimate, it also has to be exercised appropriately as;
'power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely' (Dalberg–Acton, 1907: 504). Max Weber and Hannah Arendt are two sociologists
whose ideology of what the concept of power is, are at the opposite ends of a pole. It is different in the fact that both theories approach different aspects
of power. Weber's account of power is more associated with everyday understanding and use of power, whereas Arendt's account of power focuses
more on power as a tool when speaking and acting in concert (Goverde H. & Lentner H, 2000).
Max Weber is renowned as one of the founding fathers to modern sociology. He defined power as being, 'the ability of an individual or group to achieve
their own goals or aims when others are trying to prevent them from realizing them' (Weber 1925b/1978:926). His concept of power unfolds
continuously as he breaks down power into two categories, coercive and authoritative. Coercive power is where an individual exercises power through
the use of force. This is in contrast to authoritative where power is seen as legitimate. Legitimate because those exercising power do so

The Video Reporting Of The Boulie Tacks Protest Ride
RESEARCH QUESTION
An empirical content analysis of the video reporting of the Boulie tacks protest ride: with respect to Hall, Ericson, Schlesinger and Bourdieu to what
extent do the differences and similarities in the range of sources used in the video stories explore a number of the varying aspects of the diverging
theoretical discussions on the source–journalist relationship?

The two stories involved in my case study revolve around the protest ride against the 'tacking bandit' who for the past 22 months has been tacking the
well–loved cycling route, the Kew Boulevard. The sources chosen by both the Channel 7 report and my own are central to the story in that they entirely
encapsulate the issue, that is, the sources themselves shape the story – i.e. the injured/tacked cyclists form the 'story'. They shift the focus slightly to
their affects/injuries from the tacks – so they have shown what significant "event" this is but also how we as an audience should understand this to be
i.e. bad man/woman throwing tacks is a disgrace look how many people are injured then contrast that with people in powerful positions also being irate,
calling for this should stop.
Clearly here the Channel 7 story clearly explicates Hall's notions of the use of Primary defines by new media by the use of the Premier. According to
Hall, primary definers are authoritative sources on an issue that can be seen to frame the discussions surrounding this is within the news (1978, p. 58)
and all subsequent interpretations following the 'primary definer' are then always compared back to the initial primary interpretation (Hall et al. 1978, p.
58). He suggests "broadcasters

It is a time when matchmakers were popular and local trades flourished. Matchmaking is a distinctive part of the cultural context; Thomasheen is
actually a matchmaker by trade. This was a traditional aspect of rural Ireland. The majority of the characters in the play see it as a young girl's purpose
in life to marry a suitable man that could provide a comfortable life for her. In one key seen in Sive we see Sive's aunt and for all purposes mother
driven to fulfil the match between Sive and Sean Dota in the guarantee of a wealthy sum of money for her meddling services.

In contrast the world of 32A was never much determined by social class as was prominent in HMMB. Set in the suburbs of Dublin in 1979, at a much
later date than the other texts, we witness the society and culture of middle class Ireland. Dublin's North side where most of the action takes place is

Literary Power In Skraeling By Rachel Qitsualik-Tinsley
Power is defined as "The capacity or ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events", power being a very unstable thing; it
changes placeholders at a moment's notice and is the one thing that everyone is after in one form or another, while still being something everyone fears.
Literary power is often represented through the characters; a classic example is in "Skraeling" written by Rachel Qitsualik–Tinsley. Power being the
focal theme throughout, it is represented by physical empowerment, manipulation, and wealth. Power is not an easy thing to have and often only causes
problems for all ends of the spectrum, with many physical and mental penalties if not used properly. Firstly, Physical empowerment is illustrated ...

Often flying below the radar wealth on any level is giving you power. People with money are often put on a higher pedestal than others with less, taking
for example celebrities or successful business people. In "Skraelings" Angula is the leader of the Tunit tribe, he gives all the orders and everyone
follows. Besides his convincing demeanor, he also tries to use his belongings to show others he is superior. He constantly flaunts his stolen fortunes to
convince the town that he is special and has been "gifted by the spirits". This leads everyone to see him as a provider for their community, giving him
the power he is so desperately searching for. No one can disobey him without the fear that they may lose the support that he seems to give the group.
Another time you see wealth as power is with the Shining one. He is the leader of the viking army, easily identified by his shining metal mask he wears
to hide his face. From his first appearance in the story when Kannujaq looks out to the massive boats, Kannujaq knows that he is the man to fear, with
his precious metal weapons and the army of men all following his lead. When the fear strikes Kannujaq and the Tunit, this proves that often when you
have precious belongings people are more willing to follow, in the hopes of personal gain. Finally, power is seen when Kannujaq obtains his copper
dagger, giving him the role of the "saviour". Even though Kannujaq was not directly seeking power he still had no choice but to comply; this supports
the proposition that power is a very susceptible thing and not everyone who has it wants it. Wealth is an unhealthy power and is usually given to those
who misuse it, applying it only for their personal gain or to poorly affect and control

Rhetorical Analysis Of How To Tame A Wild Tongue
Blah Blah Blah Title In How to Tame a Wild Tongue, Gloria Anzaldua uses rhetoric and personal anecdotes to convey and persuade her argument that
Latin Americans are forced to relinquish their cultural heritage, and to conform to white society. The evidence she provides comes in a variety of
platforms, both literal and rhetorical. Rhetorical, being through emotional, logical, and credible appeals through her text. Literal being explicitly stated,
without any further analysis necessary. When she utilises the modes of appeals, they are subtle within the texts, which leads the reader to analyse as
they read. She conveys ideas of internalised oppression, involuntarily imposed upon to follow strict social rules, the act of people erasing cultural
heritage, as well as the importance of embracing personal heritage. Throughout her essay, Anzaldua's main structure is unlike the standard structure of
an essay. Her thoughts are organised, and radical, which gives a more personal tone to her essay. This radical structure is witnessed within the
introductory paragraphs, she begins her essay with an anecdote. The dentist is telling her in an authoritarian tone, "we're going to have to control your

Why Do Non-State Actors Target The US
Succeeding the Cold War, the threat to the U.S. has shifted from traditional to non–traditional. As a global power, both actors target the U.S.;
conversely, nation–states (traditional threat) have become steady while Non–State Actors (NSAs) (non–traditional threat) have cultivated at an

are individuals or organizations that have economic, political or social power and are able to influence at a national and sometimes international level

The Media 's Impact On Public Opinion
The media has always had a powerful impact on public opinion in Britain. With several different types and means of communication, such as TV,
newspapers, social networking and radio, it is difficult for the public to not be even slightly impacted by the opinion of thousands that surrounds them
every day. However, with newspapers spinning stories to promote the party they favour (such as the Daily Mail in favour of Conservatives or the Mirror
in favour of Labour ) or to disparage the opposition, is it clear there is any obvious influence from the media towards the public in relation to reporting
on British Politics?
Since January 2001, the total circulation of the UK 's ten major national newspapers has declined . It could be said that the press choose to slander
politicians to gain attention from the public to push sales, rather than inform the public on the real political issues at hand. For example, women's
magazines discuss political issues such as abortion and the "tampon tax", rather than commercial newspapers that publish stories such as scrutinizing
politician Jeremy Corbyn for his "subtle head nod" at the remembrance Sunday cenotaph. In a declining market for their product, newspaper titles battle
against each other for audiences and advertising revenue in their respective market segments, while the press as a whole is engaged in competition with
other media sectors, such as the news via the internet, which makes it easier for the public to instantly engage with

Social Problems
According to Ferreira (2005:86), four elements may be discerned when attempting to define a social problem. The four elements are: a pressure
(influential) group; a social condition; a set of values and norms; and collective action.
Taking these four elements as building blocks the following definition of a social problem may be arrived at: A social condition, known to a pressure
group as posing a threat to current values and norms, that requires collective action to rectify (Pretorius, Le Roux, Lesufi, Liebenberg, Martin
Rautenbach & Zegeye in Ferreira 2005:87).

Today, Africa's rate of urbanization is second to none (Tibaijuka in de Beer, du Plessis, Liebenberg & Moloi 2005:116). At the eve of independence,
during the 60's for a handful of African countries, urbanization, in most cases, was well sought after (social condition). Western powers had developed
following paths of industrialization and urbanization and the same was thought possible in Africa (pressure groups). The basic tenants of this
assumption went as follows: Capital distributed from the West to Africa was to be invested in industrial enterprises in centers that wielded political
power. This newly found industry would promote manufacturing and encourage domestic savings. Jobs would be created and the capital accumulated
reinvested in development projects (de Beer et al 2005: 115–125). And thus, by following this path Africa would become self–sufficient (values and
norms).
However, five decades later Africa has failed to develop as rapidly or to the extent to which the West has. Urban poverty escalates daily. A handful of
problems face the African city: insufficient provision of jobs, poorly delivered public services, a weakening revenue base, and escalating pollution
levels. According to de Beer et al. (2005:116–117), it is projected that by 2030 half of Africa's population will have become urbanized, most of whom
will live in poverty (social problem).
There are some solutions on offer. Urban agriculture, albeit somewhat controversial, has

Totalitarian Methods Of Domination
Arendt explained that "totalitarian methods of domination' are uniquely suited to programmes of mass extermination" such as the massacring of Jewish
citizens in Germany by the Nazis (Arendt, 1979, p. 440). However, Anthony Court expands on Arendt's theory of totalitarianism by stating that
'previous regimes of terror, does not simply aim to extinguish physical life but rather total terror is preceded by the obliteration of civil and political
rights as well as exclusion from the public sphere, the confiscation of property and lastly the deportation and murder of entire extended families and
their surrounding communities' (Court, 2008, p. 102). This definition is clearly seen throughout history whether it be associated with World War II,
Stalinism, ISIS, Al Qaeda or the frequent riots occurring in western societies such as the Oakland 2009 riots, London 2011 riots or the Ferguson
2014/15 riots with each riot strongly associated with racial tension and unrest. Each of these events have different levels of totalitarianism but show that
society does not learn from past events. Arendt explains that totalitarianism is formed when governments have emerged as a result of the
institutionalisation of terror and violence (D 'Entreves, 2014). However since Stalinism and Nazism there has not been a period of time where terror or
violence has been extinguished, whether it be state racism, nationalism or terrorism global society has not transitioned away from totalitarianism.

Persepolis Analysis
Persepolis, a graphic biography of a girl named Marji, expands on her maturation and forming identity in Iran during the Islamic regime. The book is
written in black and white with simple lines to symbolize the political and moral dichotomy in society and within herself. The book begins with Marji
at age ten–full of curiosity and trustworthiness towards authorities. She transitions by the conclusion of the book, through her own rebellion and
realization, and she acquires her independence and knowledge of the political, social, and religious issues in her country. This paper will analyze Marji's
maturation as she learns to stand up for herself, realizes how religion and politics can be used for evil ends, and discovers her sense of morality. In the
first chapter, ¨The Veil, ¨ Marji begins to realize her family´s differing ¨modern and avant–garde¨ view from the many other traditional families around
her (6). She writes that she "was born with religion," and her ambition to become a prophet as an adult, with her parent's support, differs from the other
traditional families in Iran. In view of this, when her teacher questioned her at school on what she wished to pursue as an adult, Marji honestly
answered that she wished to be a prophet. In response to the atypical answer, the class laughed and the disturbed teacher called her parents in for a
conference. Her parents, proud of their daughter's ambition and honesty, frowned upon the teacher and later asked Marji what she wanted

Teaching And Classroom Management Styles
When I took the surveys, I surprised to see how even–keeled my teaching and classroom management styles were. Before student teaching, I had a
general idea of what my ideal teaching style and classroom management techniques would look like. However, I have realized that a combination of
several teaching styles may be beneficial for students because each student has particular needs for the classroom. According to the teaching style
inventory, I can be described as a facilitator first and foremost, followed by a formal authority figure, personal model, and delegator. According to
Grasha, a facilitator can be described as a teacher who "enhances the personal nature of student–teacher interactions" (143). Facilitators are often
guiding entities for students because they encourage independent work (Grasha 143). In my teaching, I have always thought that student independence
is the ultimate goal. I do not want to be the sole source of knowledge in the classroom. Every student has something important to say. In addition to my
focus on individual needs, I still possess qualities of a more traditional classroom teacher. I agree with part of Grasha's analysis of a formal authority
figure; formal authority figures are concerned with "establishing learning goals, expectations, and rules of conduct for students" (143). Students need
some consistency and expectations for how to operate in a classroom environment. If this is not provided, there will be chaos. My teaching style

The Legacy Of The Lincoln Electric Company Essay
The Lincoln Electric Company has dominated the market of welding machine manufacturing since its infancy in the late 1900's. Their continued
success is due to companies' ability to adapt different organizational cultures, into a beautiful melting pot of profitability. Management could be
described as a mix of both outcome–oriented and stable styles, with a hefty dose of people–oriented cultures, all wrapped into one.
In 1895, engineer, inventor, and businessman John C. Lincoln started Lincoln Electric Company. His brother James would join him shortly, in his
business endeavor, starting in 1907 (Sharplin, A 1989). James managerial style would most closely be described as people–oriented. He once said
"Labor and management are properly not warring camps; they are parts of one organization in which they must and should cooperate fully and happily."
(Sharplin, A 1989) Early on, he created the Advisory Board, a committee made up of both employees who were elected by their peers and upper
management, including the chief executive officer. The Advisory Board continues still to this day, meeting bimonthly to discuss employee policies,
working conditions, etc. Though these meetings, employees have gained such things as health benefits, life insurance, paid vacation time, retirement
pension plans, stock incentives, continued on and off site education, and much more. (Sharplin, A 1989)
Another early result of the Advisory Board meetings was the creation of the employee incentive and

Analysis Of Miracle By Tope Folarin
To many, miracles are a very real phenomenon, and many people adamantly believe that miracles are performed every day. While there are many
interpretations of what a miracle may be, the short story "Miracle," by Tope Folarin, puts the concept in a distinct context. The story details the
experience of a boy being a skeptical participant in a "miracle" in a Nigerian church. The story is multifaceted in that it addresses multiple power
dynamics using various details, however, the main conflict is between the traditional beliefs of the older church members and the skepticism of the
youth. Ultimately, Folarin argues that miracles are not supernatural events that instantly change lives, rather they are circumstantial and are realized
over time as a result of perseverance. To do so, Folarin uses literary devices such as characterization of the members of the church, situational irony,
and setting. "Miracle" details the story of a boy being part of a miracle in a Nigerian church. He begins by describing certain rituals of the church, such
as a prayer and performing Nigerian songs. Eventually, a short, blind old man described as a "prophet" reaches the pulpit. Most people at the church
were Nigerian immigrants looking for miracles, and believed he could perform them. He promises the members of the church that they will receive
"powerful blessings" so long as they are faithful (Folarin 75). He then calls the boy to the pulpit, declaring that he will cure his sight so that he will

To better perform your job and to enhance organizational performance, you believe you need more power. Drawing on what you learned in Level 4 about types of power and different power bases, and being sensitive to ethical issues, develop and describe a strategy to increase your power so as to improve organizational delivery of services. . I am actually a middle manager in one of the county agencies. In my line of work there are many layers of responsibilities. For me, power is an ability to influence, inspire and mobilize individuals or groups to achieve their goals and objectives while maintaining dignity, moral and mutual respect. Empowerment, however, is giving or sharing power with others to enable their creativity, contribution and participation in collective power and it should come not only from others but also from within individuals. Empowerment is a new style of power that requires participatory management and shared responsibility. There are several power types and power bases to consider, but I will describe more those powers that, in my opinion, should increase and extend my current power. By my nature I don't prefer any power that would encourage any kind of violence as bases for power, any power that would suppress authentic communication and shared decision–making process. I feel that power based on healthy and positive competition is a better way to go and should hopefully inspire all my team members to achieve better results. Additionally, nutrient and integrative powers are more appealing to me since their implementation is more fitting to my leadership style and I strongly believe will bring better results. Problems Facing Students Although I do not have students that I associate with in my area to identify some of the serious problems confronting them today, but based upon the reoccurring social media headlines and personal experiences; I felt that some of most serious problems confronting students in school today are family involvement, technology usage, bullying, students' attitudes and behavior, drugs and the closely relationship between teacher and students. There are many problems or factors that contributes to the problems and social stigmatized in which students may face based upon their back ground and where they are from. Outline the similarities and differences between Adorno et al.'s (1950) and Altemeyer's (1981) approach to authoritarianism The rise of fascism in Germany in the 1930's and the acts of aggression and atrocities committed by the Nazis during the Second World War led to questions being asked as to why some people where prone to such levels of violence and hate in the name of political ideology. The 'Authoritarian Personality' was a concept suggested in 1950 by German sociologist Theodor Adorno and colleagues following their research identifying the personality traits believed to allow an individual to be bias towards and follow a fascist ideology. Although initially met with great excitement, over time the authoritarian personality alone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (2012). Although Altemeyer's research also recognised and supported these findings his concept of authoritarianism was different. He defined RWA not as personality type with fixed characteristics but as a set of three attitudes similar to three of the characteristics Adorno et al also used to describe the authoritarian personality: Authoritarian submission: A high level of respect and submission to perceived legitimate authority figures or establishments. Authoritarian aggression: Aggressiveness directed against targets identified by the established authorities. Conventionalism: The aversion to new ideas with a preference towards social norms which should be adhered to by all of the individual's society (Bobbio et al 2007). Although Altemeyer agreed with Adorno et al on what the behavioral and attitudinal features of authoritarianism were, a key difference he put forward was his interpretation of where it actually came from. Adorno et al took a psychoanalytical approach, as first popularised by Sigmund Freud in the late 19th century to the explanation of the causes of authoritarianism. In "Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem", Erich Fromm warns "human history began with an act of disobedience, and it is not unlikely that it will be terminated by an action of obedience" (622). Fromm effectively supports the claim while revealing that disobedience is the key concept standing between freedom and the end of human history. Fromm's article was published during the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States. Tension from the possibility of the end of the world due to the likelihood of a nuclear war between the two countries was at an all–time high. The American government tries to suppress any information that could lead to disobedience or disorder among the people. The people's impulse to obey the government is allowing the current president of the United States, who John D. • 13. Differences Between Power And Authority Question 1: Distinguish between power and authority. Do you believe the foundation of criminal justice organizations is power or authority? Why? Give examples in everyday criminal justice life that reflect the differences among these concepts. Answer: According to Stojkovic, Kalinich, and Klofas (2015), power can be defined as "A construct that underscores that importance of how compliance among subordinates is achieved" (p. 288). Power can be at both a person and organizational level and there are five forms, including coercive power, reward power, legitimate power, referent power, and expert power (Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas, 2015). In contrast, authority is "demoting the compliance with particular directives essential for achieving a common or shared goal" (Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas, 2015, p. 290). The three forms of author include, traditional authority, charismatic authority, and legal authority (Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas, 2015). Power can become authority over time and authority is useful for when individuals must be supervised within an organization (Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas, 2015). I believe the foundation of criminal justice organizations is authority because everyone is trying to attain the same goal and be successful (Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas, 2015). If power is distributed among too many employees, then that could lead to role conflict (Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas, 2015). It is important to have supervisors with authority over ... • 15. The People's Republic Of China The People's Republic of China (PRC) has experienced unprecedented economic growth under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) since 1978. In his speech "The Present Situation and the Tasks Before Us," Deng Xiaoping emphasized the importance of economic reform: "The superiority [of the socialist system] should manifest itself in many ways, but first and foremost it must be revealed in the rate of economic growth and in economic efficiency" (Deng 1980). With this explicit commitment to growth, Deng links the political legitimacy of the CCP, as the monopolist of power within the PRC, to economic performance. Therefore, the inevitable economic slowdown in the PRC will undermine the legitimacy of the authoritarian CCP and force political liberalization. Given this statement, I suspect two major questions have arisen: (1) How is economic slowdown in China inevitable and (2) Could the CCP just adapt its basis of authoritarian legitimacy without political liberalization? I will address both questions in full after examining the history of economic reform in the PRC. Economic Growth in the PRC from 1978 to 2016 The story of economic reorganization starts in 1978 after the Cultural Revolution when Deng, acting as the paramount leader of the CCP, replaced "collective farming" with the "household–responsibility" system in which farmers were allowed to sell extra grain on the open market. With increased incentives, agricultural production increased by 47 percent from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Trifles By Susan Glaspell Has An Authority Over The Text Authority of text has been a debatable topic for centuries and it is still a controversial subject nowadays. Especially it is relevant for drama texts, due to the fact that they are written to be played on stage and adapted by other directors, hence, they can be modified through their own interpretation. While ancient dramas face up copyright ownership dilemma too, more modern plays just struggle with playwright's authority; in other words, the extent to which playwright can be called an owner of a play. This essay will use Trifles by Susan Glaspell as a core example in order to define "authority of text" and describe how it applies to – or is perhaps resisted by – the play. It will discuss the extent to which Glaspell has an authority over the text, by analysing it and two other adaptations of the play. Finally, a personal opinion will be offered based on the weight of evidence. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are two obvious (perhaps there can be more) understandings of the authority of text: historical and more philosophical. What historians question sometimes in old texts is their ownership, because the information about an author is either lost or not proven, hence they do not know who textual authority belongs to. This problem rarely happens with modern texts, as the author is known, however, they, as all other texts, face up the problem of adaptation without losing its authenticity. Specifically, it concerns drama text and performance relationship, but nowadays, with the rise of cinema, it is also related to epic texts. How much authority does a playwright have over his text? Can a director modify a text without crossing playwright's authority? To what extent authority of drama belongs to a playwright? • 19. Analysis Of Norman Mailer 's The Naked And The Dead Essay In this excerpt of Norman Mailer's The Naked and the Dead, the story follows an interaction between General Cummings and his aide Robert Hearn. In their confrontation, Hearn mocks the legitimacy of Cummings's authority as general. Cummings does his best to assert himself, but he realizes that his power is illegitimate. In examining this conflict, Mailer's story covers important sociological concepts, including the characterization of symbolism, legitimacy of rational authority, the looking–glass self, the idea of communion, conflict theory, dominance, anomie, mores, and the power hierarchy. Symbols transcend objective significance, as their importance comes from the ideas associated with them. As Emile Durkheim says in his essay, Sacred Objects as Symbols, "...the sacred character assumed by an object is not implied in the intrinsic properties of this latter: it is added to them" ("Sacred Objects as Symbols"). This idea becomes apparent in Cummings's appalled reaction to seeing the cigarette butt and match mashed into the floor. Although seemingly inconsequential, Cummings views the cigarette butt mashed into the floor as a sign of disrespect to his authority. In his essay, Legitimate Order and Types of Authority, Max Weber discusses the idea of legitimacy: a public respect for and acceptance of power that is based on tradition, rationality, or charismatic traits of the leader. Further, Weber comments on the efficacy of deviance to curb these types of legitimacy, "For so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Bishop Court of Appeals of Kentucky,____S.W.3d___(2010) FACTS Gilbert Bishop was admitted to Laurel Creek Health Care Center on July 23, 2002, after arriving via ambulance without family present. During that examination, Gilbert communicated to Laurel Creek staff that he could not use his hands well enough to write or hold a pencil. Gilbert was otherwise found to be mentally competent. Gilbert's sister, Rachel Combs, arrived after Gilbert, she offered to sign the admissions forms, but Laurel Creek employees told her that it was their policy to have the patient's spouse sign the admissions papers if the patient was unable to sign them. Rachel also testified that Gilbert asked her to get his wife, Anna ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... REASON Laurel Creek first argues that this is a case of actual agency and that Anna Bishop has actual authority as Gilbert's agent to sign the admissions paperwork as is therefore bound by the arbitration agreement therein. We agree with Laurel Creek that Gilbert created an actual agency relationship between him and his wife. According to his sister, Rachel, Gilbert specifically asked that his wife be brought to the nursing home so that she could sign the admissions documents for him, and Anna acted upon that delegation of authority and signed the admissions papers. This is consistent with the creation of actual authority as described in the Restatement (Third) of Agency § 2.01, comment c (2006). The Restatement explains the rationale for the creation of actual agency in three steps. First, "the principal manifests assent to be affected by the agent's action." In the instant case, Gilbert asked that Anna come to the hospital to sign the papers for him. Second, "the agent's actions establish the agent's consent to act on the principal's behalf." Here, Anna signed all the admissions papers per her husband's request and therefore consented to act on Gilbert's behalf. Third, by acting within such authority, the agent affects the principal's legal relations with third parties. Clearly here, Anna's actions affected Gilbert's relations with Laurel Creek, a third party. The trial court acknowledged that Gilbert had the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He had a different conception of capitalist society than most of his contemporaries. He looked at capitalism from all the different aspects that the philosophy was made of. Some of these aspects are state power, authority, class inequality, imperialism, and bureaucracy. To understand how Weber thought one must look at each area separately then put them all together in a global package. Weber describes history in terms of the constant struggle for power. He bases all significant historical changes on the power struggle that caused them. Weber describes power as a zero sum game. That means for one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unlike rational–legal authority, traditional authority is not codified in impersonal rules but is usually invested in a hereditary line or invested in a particular office by a higher power. Finally, charismatic authority rests on the appeal of leaders who claim allegiance because of the force of their extraordinary personalities. Weber does not feel that the power of a class is a very important issue. Weber feels that classes are only important, within the struggle for power, when they state they are part of their class in their actions. Classes, along with status groups, are just passive members in society. Only if a political party solely represents the class, then it becomes active. This unimportance of classes shows Weber's feelings that the economic issues within capitalism do not effect authority or the struggle for power. Imperialism, in Weber's mind, is not a matter of economics. He states that imperialism more of a political tool. It is used as a tool of prestige for the elites and way to promote nationalism among the masses. The idea of imperialism was around before capitalism, so it is natural to Weber to say that it could not have been created by capitalism. Imperialism did, however, appeal to all members of the ruling classes. It appeals to the prestige of the old elites and it is the source of money for the new elites; but the appeal of prestige is the more important factor to Weber. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Before Milgram's findings, the fact that people were inclined to obey to authority figures was already realized. He just confirmed this belief. Milgram followed effective steps by using precise procedures. He made sure that the experiment reflected features of an actual situation in which a person would obey to an authority figure: offering compensation (monetary reward in this experiment), being under pressure (Prods 1 to 4 in this case), and mentioning that the person who obeys can withdraw. These features can also be seen in a situation where a soldier is commanded to fire, for instance. A soldier will get a monetary compensation, is under pressure to obey because he chose to be part of the military, and he knows that he can resign at any time. Milgram created an experiment so precise and detailed that more than enough evidence was demonstrated. • 35. Power By Niccolo Machiavelli, Hannah Arendt, And Karl Emil Power is defined as a political action coerced to exercise or to pursuit. It influences and controls the content of political power. The theory of power is argued by Niccolo Machiavelli, Hannah Arendt, and Karl Emil (Max) Weber. Machiavelli's position stood that power is held by individuals. As for Arendt, she believed power was maintained within groups, while Weber believed power lied in institutions. Niccolo Machiavelli based his position of individual power on his book The Prince. The Prince extends Machiavelli's analysis of how to acquire and maintain political power. There are four types of principalities discussed: hereditary principalities, that are inherited by the ruler through fortune and family royalty, mixed principalities, territories that are annexed to the ruler's existing territories, new principalities, namely the Papal States belonging to the Catholic church, and new principalities, those states that may be acquired by one's own power, by the power of others or by the will of the people. There is simplicity for a prince that inherits a state through fortune or the efforts of others due to easy ascent to power, but maintaining the power is more difficult. For a prince that conquers a state through force and power has difficulty conquering the state but has an easy time maintaining the state. Machiavelli explained three ways in maintaining a state: despoilment, allow the people to live under their own rules, and residing in the state. Despoilment is the act ... As SIMs demonstrates, humans can currently create avatars to do out bidding, to behave as some aspect of the individual's personality wishes it could do. While this creative process is limited to video games, the theoretical process suggests that an alternative or parallel reality exists where an individual can live through another person, in a separate field from his or her actual physical being. In this other reality, the individual can be who he or she wants to be and behave however they choose, with the goal of living out their most intimate desires, good or bad. I was invited to the professor's house along with another former student to eat dinner with him and his wife. While we were eating the meal, the professor gave me and the other student a glass of wine to go with dinner. Even though I was of legal drinking age and was no longer a student of the professor's, it felt strange to have a professor provide me alcohol. Also, I felt uncomfortable being in the professor's home since it was the first time I had socialized with a professor outside of a school environment. I later discussed the event with the other student to inquire if the situation also made her uncomfortable. The individual disclosed that she did not feel uncomfortable since this was not her first time having dinner with the professor and his wife. I did not talk about how this incident made me feel with my professor. The reason the boundaries were unclear in this situation was that there was a multiple relationship. Topic of Inquiry It is important for managers to understand the sources of power and influence as they must rely upon the cooperation of subordinates in order to be successful. Strong managers rely upon more than just authority they also use leadership skills and power to obtain the most productivity from their staff. According to French and Raven (1959) there are five sources of power. Referent power seems to be the most influential and the least affected by change. They know the "aspirations, fears, capabilities, and attitudes" (Henderson & Moskos, 1985, p. 112) of others and they help people feel capable and good about themselves (DuBrin, 1995). These traits help to create friendship and over a longer period of time loyalty. 4.) Being a good role model / Being trustworthy. In order to have people drawn to you it is important that they respect you. Being a good role model, being truthful and being trustworthy will reinforce that respect. How is it used? Referent power can be used to influence opinion because it can create conscious or unconscious acceptance of the agent's opinion with little or no question. It can also be used to influence behaviors. As stated by Locke (2003) "When identification is strong, imitation [of the agent's behavior] is likely to occur even without any conscious effort" (p. 247) to influence. The importance of comprehensive site investigations and getting the right report, and by an EPA accredited auditor can be seen in the court case Charben Haulage Pty Ltd v Environmental & Earth Sciences Pty Ltd (2004) FCA 403. In this case Caltex had obtained development consent from the local council to decommission a suburban service station and remediate it to residential standards. A condition of the consent was that an auditor accredited by the EPA would sign off the completed decontamination. A consultant issued a report to Caltex stating that the former service station site was suitable for residential use, and the sale of the service station was completed relying on the report. The contract of sale contained a condition that the site would be suitable for purposes permitted by its current business zoning (in which residential flats were also permitted). However, the council then rejected the consultants report, as an EPA accredited auditor had not signed it off. The purchaser engaged its own accredited auditor, who recommended reporting to the authority that the site posed significant risk of harm to human health and the environment because of contaminated groundwater, off site migration, vapors and the presence of residential units down slope. It is remarkable that in every group within any society that is based on hierarchies' rules, they are dominant and dominated individuals. Although, in order for a society to function the "dominated" should be willing to obey the "dominants", which requires legitimacy. This part of the exam work aims to present theoretical models of political legitimacy, with focus on Max Weber's "ideal types". Max Weber establishes that it is very necessary to have political legitimacy to keep order in the society and everything that revolves around the society. According to Max Weber's studies there are three "ideal types" of political legitimacy: traditional, charismatic and legal–rational, and they all have one main fact in common, in order to function there has to people ready to obey. In this context Weber tells us that within society there must be elements that hold the power or having authority legitimately recognized forms, and elements that do not hold the power. In the State, for example, Weber explains that, it is necessary that people obey the authority of those in power where this authority is legitimately recognized, so that it works. And thus we perceive that domination has always been and is a strong presence within society. The dominance often occurs due to the numerous forms of interests, whether in its various forms. The religious authority figures referred to within Marquez's novel, specifically the bishop, prove their hypocrisy according to the morals of Christianity/Catholicism. Commonly accepted, Christianity teaches a person the qualities of forgiveness, acceptance, and love. Weber said " First, it is based on the general principle of precisely defined and organized across the board competencies of the various offices. These competencies are underpinned by rules, laws, or administrative regulations.". Essentially Weber was saying that in order for a modern bureaucracy to exist in either the private or the public sector there has to be a rigidly defined division of labor of a particular bureaucratic system that clearly states or identifies the tasks and duties to be performed, it has to have an established chain of command that has the capacity to coerce others to comply by rules and regulations, people with certain qualifications and certifications are hired which helps to execute the assigned duties assigned to them in a timely and efficient manner. An ideal Weberian model has several characteristics that can be noted in the past and can be see in today's beaurocratic systems, particularly in larger scale systems. In addition another key factor which has a significant impact on the manner in which the Ratcatcher's role can be interpreted is the language used to describe him in the given extract. • 53. What Distinguishes Weber's Account Of Power "What distinguishes Weber's account of power from Arendt's account of power?" The concept of power has been a topic of interest of many sociologists as they seek to define the term. Ensuring that the exercise of power is legitimate is a key integral to the concept of power in present day. However, although the power is seen as legitimate, it also has to be exercised appropriately as; 'power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely' (Dalberg–Acton, 1907: 504). Max Weber and Hannah Arendt are two sociologists whose ideology of what the concept of power is, are at the opposite ends of a pole. It is different in the fact that both theories approach different aspects of power. Weber's account of power is more associated with everyday understanding and use of power, whereas Arendt's account of power focuses more on power as a tool when speaking and acting in concert (Goverde H. & Lentner H, 2000). Max Weber is renowned as one of the founding fathers to modern sociology. He defined power as being, 'the ability of an individual or group to achieve their own goals or aims when others are trying to prevent them from realizing them' (Weber 1925b/1978:926). His concept of power unfolds continuously as he breaks down power into two categories, coercive and authoritative. Coercive power is where an individual exercises power through the use of force. Clearly here the Channel 7 story clearly explicates Hall's notions of the use of Primary defines by new media by the use of the Premier. According to Hall, primary definers are authoritative sources on an issue that can be seen to frame the discussions surrounding this is within the news (1978, p. 58) and all subsequent interpretations following the 'primary definer' are then always compared back to the initial primary interpretation (Hall et al. 1978, p. 58). • 57. Cultural Context in How Many Miles to Babylon, Sive and 32a Comparative Studies Cultural Context Q The cultural context of a text can determine the characters and events of the text greatly. Discuss in relation to at least two texts you have studied in your comparative studies course. Texts studied: How Many Miles to Babylon, by Jennifer Johnston (HMMB) Sive, by John B Keane 32A, directed by Marian Quinn The texts I have studied as part of my comparative course are greatly determined by the cultural context of the text; we can see results of this on both characters and events of each text. In each text I have studied the time and setting of the texts, the class structures and economic statutes of the characters, the customs, traditions, power and especially the values of the societies all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is a time when matchmakers were popular and local trades flourished. Matchmaking is a distinctive part of the cultural context; Thomasheen is actually a matchmaker by trade. This was a traditional aspect of rural Ireland. The majority of the characters in the play see it as a young girl's purpose in life to marry a suitable man that could provide a comfortable life for her. In one key seen in Sive we see Sive's aunt and for all purposes mother driven to fulfil the match between Sive and Sean Dota in the guarantee of a wealthy sum of money for her meddling services. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ We see that money is power in the world of Sive: Sean Dóta can get his way and marry Sive just because he has money. Sive's faith can be defined by the expectations and considerations of her society and culture. In contrast the world of 32A was never much determined by social class as was prominent in HMMB. Set in the suburbs of Dublin in 1979, at a much later date than the other texts, we witness the society and culture of middle class Ireland. • 59. Literary Power In Skraeling By Rachel Qitsualik-Tinsley Power is defined as "The capacity or ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events", power being a very unstable thing; it changes placeholders at a moment's notice and is the one thing that everyone is after in one form or another, while still being something everyone fears. Literary power is often represented through the characters; a classic example is in "Skraeling" written by Rachel Qitsualik–Tinsley. Power being the focal theme throughout, it is represented by physical empowerment, manipulation, and wealth. Power is not an easy thing to have and often only causes problems for all ends of the spectrum, with many physical and mental penalties if not used properly. Firstly, Physical empowerment is illustrated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Often flying below the radar wealth on any level is giving you power. People with money are often put on a higher pedestal than others with less, taking for example celebrities or successful business people. In "Skraelings" Angula is the leader of the Tunit tribe, he gives all the orders and everyone follows. Besides his convincing demeanor, he also tries to use his belongings to show others he is superior. He constantly flaunts his stolen fortunes to convince the town that he is special and has been "gifted by the spirits". This leads everyone to see him as a provider for their community, giving him the power he is so desperately searching for. No one can disobey him without the fear that they may lose the support that he seems to give the group. Another time you see wealth as power is with the Shining one. He is the leader of the viking army, easily identified by his shining metal mask he wears to hide his face. From his first appearance in the story when Kannujaq looks out to the massive boats, Kannujaq knows that he is the man to fear, with his precious metal weapons and the army of men all following his lead. When the fear strikes Kannujaq and the Tunit, this proves that often when you have precious belongings people are more willing to follow, in the hopes of personal gain. Finally, power is seen when Kannujaq obtains his copper dagger, giving him the role of the "saviour". Even though Kannujaq was not directly seeking power he still had no choice but to comply; this supports the proposition that power is a very susceptible thing and not everyone who has it wants it. Wealth is an unhealthy power and is usually given to those who misuse it, applying it only for their personal gain or to poorly affect and control ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Rhetorical Analysis Of How To Tame A Wild Tongue Blah Blah Blah Title In How to Tame a Wild Tongue, Gloria Anzaldua uses rhetoric and personal anecdotes to convey and persuade her argument that Latin Americans are forced to relinquish their cultural heritage, and to conform to white society. The evidence she provides comes in a variety of platforms, both literal and rhetorical. Rhetorical, being through emotional, logical, and credible appeals through her text. Literal being explicitly stated, without any further analysis necessary. When she utilises the modes of appeals, they are subtle within the texts, which leads the reader to analyse as they read. She conveys ideas of internalised oppression, involuntarily imposed upon to follow strict social rules, the act of people erasing cultural heritage, as well as the importance of embracing personal heritage. Throughout her essay, Anzaldua's main structure is unlike the standard structure of an essay. Her thoughts are organised, and radical, which gives a more personal tone to her essay. This radical structure is witnessed within the introductory paragraphs, she begins her essay with an anecdote. The dentist is telling her in an authoritarian tone, "we're going to have to control your tongue", which has a double meaning. One meaning within the anecdote, the dentist is an authority figure and is implying that her tongue is out of control and that it needs to be in control. The second meaning of this is that the dentist represents society, and he is "cleaning out" the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As a global power, both actors target the U.S.; conversely, nation–states (traditional threat) have become steady while Non–State Actors (NSAs) (non–traditional threat) have cultivated at an amplified rate. Nation–states are defined as a sovereign geographical area with political legitimacy over a cultural population. "Non–state actors (NSA) are individuals or organizations that have economic, political or social power and are able to influence at a national and sometimes international level but do not belong to or ally themselves to any particular country or state," (Joey 2015). Most NSAs often use guerrilla warfare tactics that leave little evidence to detect them from citizens. • 65. The Media 's Impact On Public Opinion The media has always had a powerful impact on public opinion in Britain. With several different types and means of communication, such as TV, newspapers, social networking and radio, it is difficult for the public to not be even slightly impacted by the opinion of thousands that surrounds them every day. However, with newspapers spinning stories to promote the party they favour (such as the Daily Mail in favour of Conservatives or the Mirror in favour of Labour ) or to disparage the opposition, is it clear there is any obvious influence from the media towards the public in relation to reporting on British Politics? Since January 2001, the total circulation of the UK 's ten major national newspapers has declined . It could be said that the press choose to slander politicians to gain attention from the public to push sales, rather than inform the public on the real political issues at hand. For example, women's magazines discuss political issues such as abortion and the "tampon tax", rather than commercial newspapers that publish stories such as scrutinizing politician Jeremy Corbyn for his "subtle head nod" at the remembrance Sunday cenotaph. In a declining market for their product, newspaper titles battle against each other for audiences and advertising revenue in their respective market segments, while the press as a whole is engaged in competition with other media sectors, such as the news via the internet, which makes it easier for the public to instantly engage with ... • 67. Social Problems According to Ferreira (2005:86), four elements may be discerned when attempting to define a social problem. The four elements are: a pressure (influential) group; a social condition; a set of values and norms; and collective action. Taking these four elements as building blocks the following definition of a social problem may be arrived at: A social condition, known to a pressure group as posing a threat to current values and norms, that requires collective action to rectify (Pretorius, Le Roux, Lesufi, Liebenberg, Martin Rautenbach & Zegeye in Ferreira 2005:87). In the sections that follow I will attempt to clarify each one of the four elements that constitute the definition of a social problem. The crux of the matter here regards ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Today, Africa's rate of urbanization is second to none (Tibaijuka in de Beer, du Plessis, Liebenberg & Moloi 2005:116). At the eve of independence, during the 60's for a handful of African countries, urbanization, in most cases, was well sought after (social condition). Western powers had developed following paths of industrialization and urbanization and the same was thought possible in Africa (pressure groups). The basic tenants of this assumption went as follows: Capital distributed from the West to Africa was to be invested in industrial enterprises in centers that wielded political power. This newly found industry would promote manufacturing and encourage domestic savings. Jobs would be created and the capital accumulated reinvested in development projects (de Beer et al 2005: 115–125). And thus, by following this path Africa would become self–sufficient (values and norms). However, five decades later Africa has failed to develop as rapidly or to the extent to which the West has. Urban poverty escalates daily. A handful of problems face the African city: insufficient provision of jobs, poorly delivered public services, a weakening revenue base, and escalating pollution levels. According to de Beer et al. (2005:116–117), it is projected that by 2030 half of Africa's population will have become urbanized, most of whom will live in poverty (social problem). There are some solutions on offer. Urban agriculture, albeit somewhat controversial, has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Totalitarian Methods Of Domination Arendt explained that "totalitarian methods of domination' are uniquely suited to programmes of mass extermination" such as the massacring of Jewish citizens in Germany by the Nazis (Arendt, 1979, p. 440). However, Anthony Court expands on Arendt's theory of totalitarianism by stating that 'previous regimes of terror, does not simply aim to extinguish physical life but rather total terror is preceded by the obliteration of civil and political rights as well as exclusion from the public sphere, the confiscation of property and lastly the deportation and murder of entire extended families and their surrounding communities' (Court, 2008, p. 102). This definition is clearly seen throughout history whether it be associated with World War II, Stalinism, ISIS, Al Qaeda or the frequent riots occurring in western societies such as the Oakland 2009 riots, London 2011 riots or the Ferguson 2014/15 riots with each riot strongly associated with racial tension and unrest. Each of these events have different levels of totalitarianism but show that society does not learn from past events. Arendt explains that totalitarianism is formed when governments have emerged as a result of the institutionalisation of terror and violence (D 'Entreves, 2014). However since Stalinism and Nazism there has not been a period of time where terror or violence has been extinguished, whether it be state racism, nationalism or terrorism global society has not transitioned away from totalitarianism. • 71. Persepolis Analysis Persepolis, a graphic biography of a girl named Marji, expands on her maturation and forming identity in Iran during the Islamic regime. The book is written in black and white with simple lines to symbolize the political and moral dichotomy in society and within herself. The book begins with Marji at age ten–full of curiosity and trustworthiness towards authorities. She transitions by the conclusion of the book, through her own rebellion and realization, and she acquires her independence and knowledge of the political, social, and religious issues in her country. This paper will analyze Marji's maturation as she learns to stand up for herself, realizes how religion and politics can be used for evil ends, and discovers her sense of morality. In the first chapter, ¨The Veil, ¨ Marji begins to realize her family´s differing ¨modern and avant–garde¨ view from the many other traditional families around her (6). She writes that she "was born with religion," and her ambition to become a prophet as an adult, with her parent's support, differs from the other traditional families in Iran. In view of this, when her teacher questioned her at school on what she wished to pursue as an adult, Marji honestly answered that she wished to be a prophet. In response to the atypical answer, the class laughed and the disturbed teacher called her parents in for a conference. Her parents, proud of their daughter's ambition and honesty, frowned upon the teacher and later asked Marji what she wanted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Teaching And Classroom Management Styles When I took the surveys, I surprised to see how even–keeled my teaching and classroom management styles were. Before student teaching, I had a general idea of what my ideal teaching style and classroom management techniques would look like. However, I have realized that a combination of several teaching styles may be beneficial for students because each student has particular needs for the classroom. According to the teaching style inventory, I can be described as a facilitator first and foremost, followed by a formal authority figure, personal model, and delegator. According to Grasha, a facilitator can be described as a teacher who "enhances the personal nature of student–teacher interactions" (143). Facilitators are often guiding entities for students because they encourage independent work (Grasha 143). In my teaching, I have always thought that student independence is the ultimate goal. I do not want to be the sole source of knowledge in the classroom. Every student has something important to say. In addition to my focus on individual needs, I still possess qualities of a more traditional classroom teacher. I agree with part of Grasha's analysis of a formal authority figure; formal authority figures are concerned with "establishing learning goals, expectations, and rules of conduct for students" (143). Students need some consistency and expectations for how to operate in a classroom environment. If this is not provided, there will be chaos. My teaching style includes ... • 75. The Legacy Of The Lincoln Electric Company Essay The Lincoln Electric Company has dominated the market of welding machine manufacturing since its infancy in the late 1900's. Their continued success is due to companies' ability to adapt different organizational cultures, into a beautiful melting pot of profitability. Management could be described as a mix of both outcome–oriented and stable styles, with a hefty dose of people–oriented cultures, all wrapped into one. In 1895, engineer, inventor, and businessman John C. Lincoln started Lincoln Electric Company. His brother James would join him shortly, in his business endeavor, starting in 1907 (Sharplin, A 1989). James managerial style would most closely be described as people–oriented. He once said "Labor and management are properly not warring camps; they are parts of one organization in which they must and should cooperate fully and happily." (Sharplin, A 1989) Early on, he created the Advisory Board, a committee made up of both employees who were elected by their peers and upper management, including the chief executive officer. The Advisory Board continues still to this day, meeting bimonthly to discuss employee policies, working conditions, etc. Though these meetings, employees have gained such things as health benefits, life insurance, paid vacation time, retirement pension plans, stock incentives, continued on and off site education, and much more. • 77. Analysis Of Miracle By Tope Folarin To many, miracles are a very real phenomenon, and many people adamantly believe that miracles are performed every day. While there are many interpretations of what a miracle may be, the short story "Miracle," by Tope Folarin, puts the concept in a distinct context. The story details the experience of a boy being a skeptical participant in a "miracle" in a Nigerian church. The story is multifaceted in that it addresses multiple power dynamics using various details, however, the main conflict is between the traditional beliefs of the older church members and the skepticism of the youth. Ultimately, Folarin argues that miracles are not supernatural events that instantly change lives, rather they are circumstantial and are realized over time as a result of perseverance. To do so, Folarin uses literary devices such as characterization of the members of the church, situational irony, and setting. "Miracle" details the story of a boy being part of a miracle in a Nigerian church. He begins by describing certain rituals of the church, such as a prayer and performing Nigerian songs. Eventually, a short, blind old man described as a "prophet" reaches the pulpit. Most people at the church were Nigerian immigrants looking for miracles, and believed he could perform them. He promises the members of the church that they will receive "powerful blessings" so long as they are faithful (Folarin 75). He then calls the boy to the pulpit, declaring that he will cure his sight so that he will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
