Notes On Experiences With Scripture
Experiences with Scripture:
Continually knowledge from the scriptures edifies and strengthens me; the knowledge and the truth
found within the pages allows me the personal witness that God exists and loves me. The scriptures
are the way we find the divinity of Christ, the good message of the gospel, and the ability to find
direct revelation from past prophets and missionaries.
Partially throughout my mission, I relied on the scriptures to lead and guide my teachings in the way
the savior wanted his message portrayed. The ultimate message that Latter–Day Saints share with
foreign lands, peoples, cultures, and socioeconomic groups is the message of redemption and grace;
Christ's grace and the savior's love for all mankind by his gospel comes down to five topics. These
topics that Christ taught come down to faith, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy
Ghost, and finally enduring to the end.
A question one may ask after hearing the gospel of Jesus Christ, "how can I know for a surety the
truth of this message?" The answer proves simple, open the scriptures and feast upon Christ's words.
Notably, one of the best places to find Christ's words on how to find the truth is found in Alma
32:28–43. Alma 32:28–43 teach how to accept the gospel and find the fruits of Christ's words.
An example of coming closer to Christ by scripture reading is through diligently pondering the
scriptures with an open heart, people will find the ability to accept the gospel. Indeed, people

The Reliability Of Scripture Analysis
In our culture there are conflicting opinions and theories about the Bible and its contents. Skeptics,
believers and non–believers either try to defend of debunk the word of God. I believe the two most
convincing arguments for the reliability of scripture are the unmistakable honesty of the Bible and
the Pragmatic test of experience.
First and foremost the Bible tells us that truth is an important and consistent entity in God's
character: the book of John describes God as "the only true God, whose word is truth."(KJV
Jhn17:3)The Bible also tells us that The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth (Jhn.14:17) Jesus, Himself
said "I am the way the truth and the life..." (Jhn14:6)
In the article "Arguments that the Bible is the Word of God" the author makes a very important
observation that when the authors of the scriptures talk about themselves they are honest about their
sins and failures; suggesting their words were inspired by God. (pg. 9) I believe that the carnal man

The Bible is full of experiences where people encountered the miracles of God. These stories were
not magically made up accounts, as Elmer Towns reveals in his book: "The Bible tells the story of
real people doing real things in normal ways."(pg. 17) The Bible tells us that Jesus is the same
yesterday, today, and forever. When Jesus walked the earth he healed blind eyes, unstopped deaf
ears, cured disease and forgave sin. The miracles are far too many to list. I have also experienced
modern day miracles. When I surrendered my life to Him, He forgave my sins. In my church I have
witnessed a deaf woman get her hearing. Jesus healed my husband's cancerous liver, after He
delivered him from a long life of Drugs and alcohol. I have seen countless evidences of Jesus
touching and interacting with His children. I have been filled with the gift of the Holy Spirit with the

My 10 values:
Service
Family
Independence
Challenge

Knowledge
Virtue

Commitment
1. I believe that these values do accurately reflect what is of greatest importance to me. There are
alternate values that perhaps could have landed on this list, but these values ring true to me and are
an accurate portrayal of that which I hold dear to me and use as guidance within my life decisions.
2. The most difficult values to discard were forgiveness, loving, and nurturing. I had an arduous time
ranking items such as God's will and friendship. My predicament with God's will was my ruling on
whether it was legitimately 'very important' to me, or whether I simply knew that it should be. It's ...

Based on my week, I spend the bulk of my time on school associated activities. This was not a
surprise to me, what I was surprised by was the small amounts of time that I devote to my religion.
Although I attend seminary, read my scriptures, and pray everyday, the accumulative time of all on
these activities adds to just over an hour a day. I am quite aware of how I spend my time, it is very
unusual for me to lay around and waste time of useless tasks.
2. Based on my week, I can only largely identify two main values from exercise #1: knowledge and
service. This makes sense because I spend 32 hours sitting in class a week. This doesn't include time
spent on homework or other corresponding activities. Something that did not make too large of an
appearance was my spirituality. I will admit that my scripture studies and other related activities
were extremely diminished this week. But it is to be expected that my religion isn't quite as evident
within my daily schedule because it isn't practical to spend over 4 hours a day reading scriptures,
there simply isn't enough time. True spirituality is seen through more subtle actions than in
extravagant activities that draw large amounts of attention. With this considered, I do still need to
increase the amount of time I spend improving my

Memorizing Scripture
There is a record of a great spiritual battle that was won only with words. Not angry words, not
hateful or spiteful words. These were words that had been written centuries before this great
incident. These were powerful words, words that carried authority, words that when used properly,
at just the right time, became very effective weapons.
Of course, I'm speaking of the response to Satan by Jesus during the time of his temptation (
Matthew ch. 4 and Luke ch. 4). On this occasion the body of Jesus was weak from extended fasting.
The pressure of Satan was fierce, but the words that Jesus used were more than adequate for
anything that Satan could use against Him. That is because the words that he chose were the inspired
words of God. " The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I know that spiritually cold, careless Christians who seldom even read the bible certainly are not
interested in memorizing scripture. But I'm talking about individuals who are interested and would
like to be able to recall more of the Bible. Could it be that most people find memorization really
difficult? I am a minister of the Gospel with more than thirty years experience and I can promise
you scripture memory is a difficult process.
The greatest problem that I find with memorizing scripture is that most people only know the old
ROTE memory method. That is hard, boring, and not very effective. While some repetition is
certainly necessary, there are very effective methods that can be used to help in the retention and
recall of scripture.
Many years ago, realizing that my ability to retain and recall scripture was poor at best, I set out on a
quest to find methods for reinforcing my memory ability. What I found was that there is quite a lot
of information on how the memory works and how to improve it. Much of what I learned has helped
me tremendously. Over the years I have learned to effectively use my God given abilities like
visualization, imagination, classification, organization, and association to help in the recall of God's

Scripture Research Paper
Christian theology is based upon the beliefs and traditions that Christians have practiced since the
first century. At that time, a continuation and development of Judaism, as Christianity spread
throughout the eastern Mediterranean world, each region began to develop an individualized
approach to biblical interpretation and Christianity. Despite the fact that it started as a movement,
Christianity has emerged into an internationally accepted religion that is composed of several
denominations within the faith. Regardless of their specific set of practices, each denomination
recognize Scripture as collection of God–breathed sacred writings that are contained within the
Bible. Christians also believe that Scripture outlines a standard of living ... Show more content on

Patristic theologians such as Irenaeus of Lyons, from the second century, developed an official
standard for interpreting Scripture. He claim this technique was also used by the first apostles.
However, between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, some argued that questions about certain
beliefs could not be answered by Scripture. Theologians of this era argued that there was a set of
unwritten traditions that was passed down through the generations within the local church.
According to the theologian, the unwritten source of tradition was arranged by God tas a second set
of revelation to supplement Scripture and not replace it. Believing this, the Council of Trent ruled
that Scripture could not though of as the only source of revelation. They argue that any belief not
found in Scripture is justified by the appeal to unwritten traditions. A Scripture–shaped worldview
has many rewards for the Christian. Moving towards a deliberative theology helps the Christian to
process the beliefs that was embedding in them at an earlier time in life. In other words, a biblical
worldview allows the Christian to form a logical understanding of the scriptures, traditions or
practices and how to apply them in a modern day application. For example, having a Scripture–
shaped worldview helps the individual to behave in a manner that is pleasing God as well as dwell
peaceable with others. Also, through a biblical worldview, the Christian will understand how to live
within a paganist world without intermingling or conforming to their

Scripture Summary
The second theme is Scriptures. McMinn (2011) exhorts Christian counselors to consider when it
would be pertinent to use explicit or implicit Scriptures in counseling and with which clients
(McMinn, 2011, p. 118). According to McMinn (2011), "Scripture is powerful and can keep us
focused on timeless truth in the midst of shifting standards of right and wrong" (p. 115).
Furthermore, McMinn confers the importance of considering the client's needs, the therapeutic
rapport, and ethical principles before utilizing Scriptures in counseling (McMinn, 2011). Most
importantly, McMinn (2011) suggests that for Scriptures to have a significant influence in the lives
of both counselors and counselee, it must be internalized and personalized outside of the counseling
session (p. 115).
The third theme is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
McMinn (2011) explains the proper role of confession and how confession is interrelated with guilt
and penance. It is important to realize that Scriptures offer an appropriate understanding of
confession and that confession also involves humility (McMinn, 2011). In essence, counseling is a
representation of confession by which the counselee develops a sense of self and need (McMinn,
2011). Unfortunately, confession is often discounted in the counseling field.
The fifth theme presented in the book is forgiveness and the hostilities to forgiveness in counseling.
According to McMinn (2011), forgiveness is of importance to emotional and spiritual health.
However, forgiveness is perceived as a "danger" if it produces indignity or distress (McMinn, 2011).
The last theme discussed is redemption. By redemption and individual recovers his/her salvation.
McMinn (2011) presents the role of redemption and the redemptive worldview in Christian
counseling. A redemptive worldview conveys that through God's redemption individuals can restore
and gain health and completeness. In other words, God has to power to redeem people (McMinn,

Jesus Vs Scripture
These two books basically walked through the Old Testament giving a very brief overview of what
happened and how it points to Christ, before and after His incarnation. While they both went
through telling a story, Roberts was more concerned with treating Scripture as a metanarrative. He
walked through giving points to show how the story was being developed. His concern was for the
Kingdom of God. Clowney, on the other hand, was not so much concerned with how the Scripture
was connected to itself but how the major characters in the Old Testament foreshadowed how Christ
would be. He basically walked through how each character used by God fell short of their calling,

stated in the title, he does not go into the New Testament or to the future like Roberts does. Instead
of following a storyline, Clowney picks out specific situations that point to Jesus. As stated in the
introduction, he showed how Christ fulfilled all of the callings of the "heroes" found in Scripture.
Going through the Old Testament, from Adam to Jonah, Jesus is revealed and foreshadowed by each
of those used by God, even if it does not seem they could possibly point to Him in any

Greg In Scripture
Greg then launches into the topic of prayer, he says, "The Pharisees were caught up in repeating
ritualized prayers over and over again. They seemed to believe that the longer the prayer, the more
spiritual and pleasing to God. But God isn't interested in eloquence. Not at all. Prayer should come
from the heart. He isn't interested in how perfectly our prayers sound, or whether they rhyme, or
whether we throw in any King James English, or how long they are. He is concerned with how
genuine they are. One of the most eloquent prayers in Scripture comes from a man who said,'God,
be merciful to me a sinner!' (Luke 18:13). Now that is an effective prayer. That is a man who was
honest with God. He said what he was thinking and simply laid it out before the Lord. And guess
what? Jesus Himself said that man's prayer was heard." Greg then goes on to use the Lord's prayer
as a guide to show us how to pray. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Discrepancy Vs Scripture
In approaching scripture as a completely divine and human work, there is opportunity to understand
how this is demonstrated through scripture. One now seek to reconcile the discrepancies instead of
overlook them or let scripture prove itself. As Porter explains the main approaches, "The two articles
by Blomberg and Grudem are, I believe, fairly typical approaches to the major issues raised
regarding the authority of the Bible. One is the attempt to answer all the issues raised by such a
position by refuting attempts to find errors within the Bible (without the original documents) and the
other is to marshal all of the Bible's own comments regarding itself, in effect to make the Bible a
self–authenticating document. Neither has proved to be successful, virtually by the proponents' own
admissions". This assumes that discrepancy in scripture is only being worked out from a specific
and modern context. It is only from the view of the interpreter. This shows the importance of
viewing biblical narrative not only from the modern–day context, but also from the historical one. ...

Hermeneutics is distinct from interpretation in that the role as interpreter is accounted for. He
furthers this idea saying, "There is a dynamic relationship that takes place between the object of our
understanding and ourselves, such that we as interpreters must always bring ourselves, our pre–
understandings, and even our prejudices to interpretation". In using hermeneutics three perspectives
are to be considered: the context or period of that scripture, the way interpretation has changed over
time, and the interpreter/modern

Migliore Scriptures Summary
Christian life and faith is primarily based on scriptures and the words given by god in scriptures. It

Scriptures are very difficult to understand and interpret. Migliore explains the primary role
scriptures plays in the life if a faithful Christian. He believes in and argues about the incomparable

implies the scriptures as the message of god done through his son Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit.

The main two divergent group beliefs in Christianity are conservative and progressive. Conservative
believes are what early Christians used to believe. As the time goes, world develops, people will
become more developed and they will start thinking and interpreting things different. The other
belief group among Christians is progressive thinkers who beliefs that scriptures are opinions of the
authors who wrote it.
The main problem of the authority of scriptures in modern culture or with the progressive thinkers is
that they believe scriptures contain some errors and fictional material. They also approach the bible
in a more of a historical context. The bible is read simply as a historical source in the modern
culture. They interpreted bible literally, historically, or even some interpreted it as a religious

Catholic Explanation Of Scripture
The Catholic approach attempts to find the truth by the interpretation and explanation of Scripture
includes three exegetical methodologies which are: reading, interpreting, and understanding.
Specifically, exegesis takes into account a thorough critical analysis of the meaning of biblical
scriptures in terms of their historical and literary context. These methods play a role and contribute
to our understanding of Scripture and this includes: 1) ideological criticism, is the examination of
bias, assumption, or strongly held beliefs which may influence biases; 2) literary criticism, which
focuses on context of the written text including the author, language, time it was written, genre, plot,
characters and symbolism; 3) sociohistorical criticism, explores the "conditions of life" (i.e.
geography, customs, traditions, religious practices, cultures, social norms, and family life. For
example, ideological and sociohistorical criticism is evidenced in the letter to the Ephesians about
morality of slavery. This letter reflects the time it was written as slavery was accepted and
considered to be the "norm" in those days. However, the author suggests to the Ephesians that they
"should be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, ... Show more content on

Beliefs In Scriptures
Everyone has a different viewpoint on the world. If I ask my manager about life, he would tell me
his point of view through his life's situations. If I asked a mathematician, he would tell me his
viewpoint on the world through math. Everyone's life has an interesting story. Every day our stories
are being written because each day is a gift from God. Mine is different from my best friend and
peers which is why I cannot compare my story to theirs. This fact is what makes life so interesting.
What a person's life comes down to is their belief. Belief is like air, I may not be able to feel it but I
know that it is there in my heart. The question becomes, what is a person's truth? In The book of

Trible's Scripture
To continue, what I think Trible was trying to get at when she was asking that people that interpret
scripture must reread rather than rewriting scripture and religious texts is that reading critically is
more important than reading with preconceived notions and trying to prove that the text is in fact a
piece of work that puts men over women, women over men, men dominating women, and or women
dominating men, but seeing women and men as equal with one another. When scripture is rewritten,
it loses its context just as the story of Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden and peoples
interpretations have twisted the meaning and the story behind the creation of woman and man, the

Her the interpretations of biblical texts and the sexism that isn't at al blatantly stated in the scripter,

Interesting in the sense that it questions, not the text, by the reader and their understandings of sex,
gender, and how the text is read by many through a patriarchal lens rather than taken for what it is.
When Trible brings up Yahweh as being an androgynous being that, from what I took from her
piece, was that God is more closely spoken of and more closely associated with a mother figure; the
seamstress, the nurturer, the care taker, the housekeeper, and the mother. Trible even goes as far as
referring to God as a "maternal Deity". So while she discusses Yahweh; the God of Israel, as
androgynous they're also seems to be a more feminine leaning interpretation coming through in how
she's read the text and based on the tasks done by God. Those tasks were known as task commonly
done by women during the time. Over all this was an informative text, it really makes you question
what it would be like if social stereotypes weren't built on masculine dominance and patriarchy; how

THE AUTHORITY AND NATURE OF SCRIPTURE
Christian phrases dominate the local Church and often spawn from core doctrinal beliefs. Employed
by two different groups, such slogans often lack the backing of intellectual understanding. The first
group repeats Christian colloquialisms in a desperate attempt to exhibit a fake intellectual
understanding to his or her peers. The second group mindlessly recites Christian expressions
because of tradition and expectation of the church body. Thus, if a person merely conveyed inquiries
regarding core doctrinal statements, both groups would dogmatically argue for the view, which their
church tells them. However, when questioned as to the foundation of such a claim, both groups
could not adequately demonstrate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One major concern with the Evangelical view of the authority Scripture resides not within doctrine,
but rather their methodology. Charles Finney, although an important flare in early Evangelical
revivals and stalwart supporter of the authority of Scripture, often forced individuals into repentance
through various means–such as alter calls. Finney, thus, subsequently replaced the authority of the
Bible with his own. Although Evangelicals carry flaws, the Evangelical view of the authority of
Scripture parallels that of early Christian thought and doctrine, thus providing an expansive lineage
of authenticity of the Scriptures. Furthermore, such validity of Scripture's authority cultivates a heart
of acceptance in the Christian. Thus, Scripture holds authority not only in its pages, but also in the
Christian's heart. Additionally, from the start, Evangelicals have sought to uphold the authority of
Scripture by examining it in its full context, while contemporaries of Evangelicalism–Liberalism
and Neo–Orthodoxy–exploit certain sections of the Bible, without proper exploration of it as a
whole. Such evidence, grounds the Evangelicals' view of the authority of Scripture and thereby
shows its' superiority over Liberalism and

The Canon of Scripture Essay
Most Christians do not think about the canon of scripture or know what it is or means in theology.
Most take for granted the Bible they have and never question how it came into being. Today, we
have 39 books of the Old Testament and 27 books of the New Testament. There was a time,
however, that we did not have a canon. Bruce defines canon as books of the Bible that were
recognized to be considered scripture (p. 17). The importance of the canon and how it was
developed was intriguing to professor and author F.F. Bruce. He dedicated his book The Canon of
Scripture to explore and explain the formulation of the canon we have today. Bruce taught in
universities, including the University of Manchester, where he began to lecture students on the ...

The third section dissects the formation of the New Testament with more historical context and
views of other writings defined as Gnostic writing. Bruce explains the spoken words of the apostles
carried as much authority as their written words and gives an in depth explanation how the Gospels
and Pauline writings were viewed by the Church Fathers. The rest of the section demonstrates the
Church Fathers and their views of what was to be considered scripture and the councils that affirmed
the inspired scripture. Bruce concludes by explaining the criteria used for writings to be considered
canon. He goes into more depth on the inspiration of the scriptures – an integral part of how the

gospel of Mark and the Primary Sense and Plenary Sense of scripture. Bruce offers a solid
explanation of the formation of the canon chronologically starting with the Hebrew scriptures (p.

of non–canonical scripture called the Apocrypha (pp. 48, 90–93). Bruce offers impressive
observation into the Gnostic writers as it regards the

Understanding Scripture
When one attempts to understand Scripture, taking the context of it into account is a vital part of that
process. As Margaret Nutting Ralph observes "When we consistently ask questions about the
context as part of our process of understanding Scripture, we act as contextualist. When we fail to
consider context, we act as fundamentalists." (Nourushed by the Word; Catholic Basics, "the
Catholic Approach to Scripture" p 27). When studying the story of Genesis, it is evident that taking
the context into account is vital part of that Scripture and therefore understating it we must act as
contextualists. In William P. Loewe article 'Kingdom of Deeds' he discusses the importance of
understanding the time period Jesus lived in, in order to properly ... Show more content on

Esther 7:1–6, 9–10, 9:20–22 – Esther saves her people
Sermon All countries have various holidays. In holidays, people can get rest for themselves. Maybe,
when we are in holidays, we would be rest without any thinking, or we can shop in shopping mall.
You know, there are huge holiday sail during holidays like Labor day and Black Friday. However,
holidays have particular meanings even though we would be busy to enjoy our life without the
meanings. Think about Thanksgiving Day which has a meaning that give thanks to God who gives
us everything.
Like this, Every country that has various holidays, the Jews also have several holidays. Most their
holidays are enacted by God in the Bible, such as the Passover, the Feast of Tabernacles, and
Shavuoth. The meaning of these are different, but they have a common denominator. This is
"remember!" What should it remember? These holidays make the Jews recall 'their hopeless past
without God' and God's salvation. Today, I would like to introduce another holiday of the Jews. This
is Purim. Although this is not enacted by God, it is enacted for remembering something. Purim
means a lot. The Book of Esther chapter 10 verses 24 to 28 introduce the background of this holiday.
Why did the Jews enact Purim? After the fall of Judah, a substantial number of the Jews was taken
into Babylon. Even though many Jews came back to Jerusalem after the fall of Babylon by Persia,
there were still many Jews in Persia. These are the Jews in

Scripture Analysis
"How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth" (Psalm 119:103, NIV).
Such a glorious description of God's Word as one meditates on it. Engaging one's senses and
savoring the sweetness of the Spirit's gentle calling, it envelops the individual as they seek to hear
God's voice. Formative reading of Scripture awakens the soul as it anticipates a conversation with
God, and a deepening of their personal relationship with Him (Issler, 2012, p. 124). This journal
entry will reflect on the practice and evaluation of spiritual reading of Scripture, and its affect on my
approach to meditating and reading Scripture in the future.

Ironically, several things occurred. First, it was awkward as I began the process, its unfamiliarity
made it difficult. Second, I felt as though I was not doing it right because the results seemed forced
and unimaginative. Finally, I realized I had no clue as to how to discern the Spirit's nudging and
transformative work that was taking place. Over time, and with God's grace, I soon found that my
conversations with God became opportunities to listen and hear as I asked God to "Search me and
know my heart" [Psalm 119:23] Issler, 2012, pp. 119–120).
There are benefits to both informative and formative reading of Scripture. Analytically dissecting
the Word lets the reader use their God–given mind to gain the knowledge to understand God's truth.
As well, formative reading of Scripture enables the reader to converse with God as they ruminate
slowly on the words of the text, using sensory images to receive God's message as it applies directly
to their life and as the Spirit works to transform and awaken their soul (Issler, 2012, p. 119). I will

The Ancient Scriptures
These ancient Scriptures use a variety of genre or style to convey a coherent message. By employing
what seems to be every distinctive genre of the ancient world, the authors present God's actions
through events and personalities. The message itself features God as the main character. God is
presented as working in the arena of human history. Key figures appear in the collection: Adam,
Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David, to name a few. The events of creation, flood, famine, plague,
opening beds of water, and other natural phenomena become the avenue through which Yahweh
works. Not only is he superior to these forces, he uses them in his actions. It is the interpretation of
these events that makes the Scriptures unique. Beyond the story of events

Authority Of Scripture
In this paper I will discuss the Authority of Scripture and how it has a role in the way the Bible is
taught in Christian Education. I will discuss and tell what the Bible is. I will discuss different

believe the role of the Bible is in the Christian faith. I will also discuss how I will teach the Bible in
Christian Faith after having listened to others and having completed this class.

The Bible is used to help us identify the Bible characters and helps us to understand our own
feelings and responses to God's activities. The Bible is the inspired Word of God that has been

God known to us today. The Bible offers a means that we can see God's presence. The Bible tells of

The details that I discovered after thoroughly observing the text was Paul desire for unity among the
Philippians as they obtain his way of thinking, and the possession of humility that would assist them
in their Christian walk. This procedure (Observation Text) has allowed me to focus more on detail
rather than extracting a thought from a particular text without information to support it. Duvall
proclaims, "If you move straight from your initial reading of a passage to the application of the

Scripture Persuasive Essay
Over 33,000 Protestant denominations – I had no idea there were so many! At first glance, it would
seem that the Roman Catholic authorities were right. However, when freedom is allowed and we do
not persecute those who disagree with us, different perspectives naturally develop. Having different
denominations is understandable, even expected, as people are free to think through the truths of
Scripture. Admittedly, 33,000+ denominations is a bit excessive.
Who (or what), then, determines what Christianity is and what Christianity is not? Where does the
authority to decide come from? Like having a strong foundation for a house, there needs to be a
standard to discern truth from error. The early church leaders used Scripture and estab–lished ...

However, if everyone is deciding for themselves right from wrong, that can lead to confusion. That
is the same thing that got Adam and Eve in trouble in the Garden, they wanted to determine right
and wrong for themselves, rather that submit to God's standard of right and wrong. Everyone ends
up doing what's right in their own eyes, then defining Christianity any way they want. Individuals
will claim that God speaks to them directly and that they have no need for Scripture (González p.
38).
Someone said once, "Jesus healed two blind men. With one He used mud, and with the other He
didn't use mud. Thank God it didn't happen in our day because we'd have two denominations, the
muddites and the anti–muddites." The good news is that unity does not have to mean uni–formity,
especially when uniformity is forced for the sake of unity. What ultimately defines a Christian is not
what denomination one belongs to, but rather if they have a relationship with Jesus Christ. We can
find unity in this. If we bicker over our doctrinal pet peeves, we most cer–tainly will be fragmented.
What is Christianity exactly? Having an objective standard that is upheld by those in authority can
help define Christianity. Certain beliefs make one a Christian. Beyond that, differences in doctrinal
details can be respected, and different denominations can be allowed to worship as suits their
conscious. After all, the whole point of the New

Christianity And The Scripture Analysis
While reading the text and the scripture this week I was enlightened as to how much Christianity
and the church has changed from the it's beginning. "At best all our versions of Christianity are
inadequate; but we would be saved much inadequacy if we did not test them by our own prejudice
and presuppositions or by agreement with this or that theologian but set them in light of the New
Testament and above all the light of the cross." What a thought provoking statement! Digging into
the text and the scripture this week many things have been brought to my attention; the first and
foremost is that Christianity has become a watered down version of what it was meant to be. The
church has allowed the world to take the scripture out of context and twist it into something that

Hebrew Bible Scriptures is proven to be significant and is interpreted in as many ways as there are

nature. Yet, in my opinion, Genesis 1:28 summarizes the main argument upon this reading
assignment and involves the natural environment of the world according to Hebrew Scripture.
Moreover in addition, Lynn White initiated a modern debate in terms of a 1967 article he wrote "The
Historical Roots of our Ecological Crises." Discussions arose concerning the Biblical perspective on

The debate over the roots of the ecological crisis focused on whether the bible authorized
environmental despotism or stewardship of the world. Both historical and contemporary rhetoric
shows that it is possible to read "Subdue ...... have dominion" as a license to exploit. In the
assumption that humanity stands over the world. Therefore "have dominion" and "subdue"
particularly when read out of context, can give aid and content to a despotic interpretation in the
human relation to the rest of the world. Nevertheless, Theodore Heibert explores the Yahwist
understanding of the environment and informs us that the major key to the interpretation of Yahwist

Scripture In Jonathan Edwards
Introduction Backdrop Many preachers within contemporary Christendom take license when dealing
with Scriptures speaking of judgment and eternal damnation. Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758) was
no such preacher, for he unashamedly proclaimed the judgment of God upon unrepentant sinners.
The "fire and brimstone" preaching Edwards demonstrates the sagacity of a true man of God; for he
did not take exception to difficult passages of Scripture simply because they are uncomfortable, or
might offend some of a more than holy opinion of themselves. The first half of the 18th century
found many preachers declaring the punishment of God upon wicked and unrepentant sinners, with

Tradition And Scripture Of The Church
Properly understood tradition is no rival to scripture but its necessary complement. Tradition and
scripture have been part of the church from its conception, honouring the memory of Jesus is in
itself a tradition as we try to live in his image. Celebrating and reflecting on this in the church
gatherings is how we define our beliefs and ourselves. There is tradition all through the scriptures
and why they will always complement each other. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states
"Sacred tradition and Sacred Scripture, then are bound closely together, and communicate with one
another. For both of them, flowing out from the same divine well–spring, come together in some
fashion to form one thing, and move towards the same goal." Each of them makes present and
fruitful in the Church the mystery of Christ, who promised to remain with his own always, to the
close of the age. Being one of the oldest religions Catholicism has been very close to the scriptures
and over time has developed many traditions, and over the centuries has also be the centre of
controversy for those very traditions, as the origin was questioned. Theologians have deliberated the
topic of Tradition and Scripture for centuries. One of the major clashes was the reformation when
Luther challenged the Catholic church on the practices of indulgences and purgatory. He declared in
one of his Theses that ' The true treasure of the church is the most holy Gospel of the glory and

Much of the New Testament talks about the life of Jesus, and these books were written by Jesus'
disciples. The original texts that made up the Bible are gone or lost, and have been copied various

into two "Testaments", one is called the Old Testament, which was originally written in Hebrew. The
Old Testament talks about the creation of the world to the laws a person should follow. The second
half is called the New Testament, was written in Greek, and much of this talks about the life and
teachings of Jesus Christ. It also has "letters written by leaders of the early church" (Geoghegan,

the chapters of a novel), here are a total of 66 books in the Bible that we have today, in each book
there are also verses like in the Qur'an. The contemporary expression of the Christian Bible is just as
import as the Qur'an for a Muslim. There are a few slight differences though. Many people go to
church to praise and worship God and a pastor gives a lecture about a subject in the Bible, Muslims
would read a passage from the Qur'an and then explain how it applies to their lives. A Christian
could (and does) do this, but typically it isn't as rigid of a structure. However, there are many

The Bible is God's word to His people. Christians are taught to read and study the Bible daily. A new
person in the body of Christ would understand reading and studying just as one reads a regular book
or study material. Often Christians are not taught how to read and study, instead they internalize
reading and studying as memorization of the Bible because most Christians can remember the word
of God without a complete understanding of scripture. When Christians are taught the history of the
Bible and how the Bible should be interpreted, they will be able to understand the message God is
relaying to them. Understanding the Bible was written as an entire literary book will unfold all the

A systematic study of the Scripture to discover the original, intended meaning called an exegesis. An
exegesis is to hear the word of God as the people in the Bible heard the word of God to find out
what was the original intent of the words of the Bible. (Stuart, 2003)
Most Christians unknowingly do exegesis by explaining how people lived in the Bible days and why
we do not do those same things today. Although anyone can do an exegesis it is recommended to
seek the help of an expert when attempting to do a reputable exegesis if needed. Anytime Scripture
is read an exegesis is the first step in interpretation. There many tools to help develop a good
exegesis, but the main elements are to read Scripture carefully and ask the right questions. (Stuart,
2003) The two basic questions one should ask while reading Scripture are: those that relate to
context and content. A good translation, a Bible dictionary, and good commentaries are great tools
for one to use on a quest to developing a good exegesis. The second task is hermeneutics.
Hermeneutics is basically explaining or interpreting biblical concepts, theories, and principles from
the Bible days into today's society. Hermeneutics is necessary to prevent people from interpreting
their own philosophy of the Bible. A solid exegesis is included in hermeneutics. The exegesis is the

The Canonization Of The Scriptures Essay
Determining what exactly influenced the official canonization of the Scriptures that we have today
is debated among many Christian theologians and scholars. It is important to understand how the
books that are found in the Bible today, where Christians receive their foundation of belief, were
selected and what encouraged the church to actually close their canon and make it official. The
church began with a canon, the Jewish Scriptures, but as the Gospels were written and the apostolic
writings were located, published, and recognized, the need for a closed canon became imperative.
The church was beginning to expand quickly, and with the expansion of the church, different and
somewhat false beliefs were soon to follow. Some of these beliefs became stretched to their full
extent and were recognized as heresies. One heretic in particular drew a significant amount of
attention from the church, and we know him as Marcion and his heresies as Marcionism. The
Marcion heresy greatly influenced the official canonization of Scripture by drawing the church of
Rome's attention to the need of a sure and solid closed canon. Marcion's History and Heresy
Marcion of Sinope was born around 100 AD. He was brought up in the apostolic faith and his father
served as a leader in the church, so he came from a very religious background. As Marcion grew up
in the church, the apostle Paul's teaching appealed strongly to him, but somewhere in life, Marcion
detached himself from the traditional

This parable in this scripture passage has been one that has troubled me every time I hear it or read

Why would Jesus tell his followers that you have to bother and pester God to get your prayers

Why would the Catholic Church make it seem ethical and morally acceptable to think that I can tell
God what is best for me? Finally, the toughest question for me, why would God use a dishonest

Inerrancy Of Scripture
There will be a point within any christens life where they will be asked to defend why they believe
in the Bible and the Word of God. Peter even states that we should "always be ready to make a
defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you..." In this particular
case the jogger is questioning if the Bible is authoritative. I would explain to the jogger that the
bible is authoritative because of the divine inspiration and the inerrancy of the scriptures. These
simple truths are the basic presuppositions of the Christian faith. The first presupposition, Christians
must believe is that the bible is an inspired text from God to men. 2 Timothy 3:16 states that "All
scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching,..." Therefore, as Christians we accept the
truth that the scripture is inspired by God supernaturally. Even though, men created the bible we

As Christians we accept the truth that the scripture is without error and is accurate and truthful
through the scripture. There are four basic arguments as to why the scripture is without error. The
first argument is the biblical argument. This argument is where scripture reinforces the inerrancy of
scripture. An example of this is how in the beginning God gave the criteria for Israel to determine if
a scripture came from Him or is from a false prophet or prophecy in Deuteronomy 13:1–5: 18:20–
22. The lord tells his people that if a prophet gives a prophecy to unknown god or gods they are not
to be followed. The second argument is the historical argument. The basic premise of the historical
argument is that this is what the church has accepted a believed since the beginning of the church.
Therefore, since the church has held the belief that the Bible is without error since the beginning of
the church. There is more credibility that the bible is without

Canon Scripture And Canon Of Scripture
Canon of Scripture When we talk about Scripture, we have to discuss the source of our revelation. In
fact, without an understanding and personal standpoint/beliefs on the canon of Scripture, one is not
able to build a solid foundation in other matters regarding Scripture, including the authority of
Scripture, the inerrancy, the clarity, the necessity, and the sufficiency. Often the canon of Scripture is
a prevalent topic in the Christian faith among believers as there is a debate which books of the Holy
Bible are considered to be part of the canon. However, although there are other books that have been
added (including the Deutro–Chronical Books in the Roman Catholic church), there are in fact only
66 books in the canon of Scripture. There are 39 Old Testament books and 27 New Testament books
that are included in the canon of Scripture. While some churches (including the Roman Catholic
Church) believe that the church should determine what books are in the New Testament canon, God
is responsible for the canon of Scripture. The Old Testament canon includes the Pentateuch Books
(Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy), the Historical Books (Joshua, Judges,

Borg's Scripture Analysis
By: Charmaine Warford
Winter 2015
A Reflection on Borg who writes "the Bible is not to be interpreted literally, factually, and
absolutely"
Borg proposes a new form of Christianity 1. that he calls the "emerging paradigm". According to
Borg the Bible is a human product and should be interpreted metaphorically and understood
sacramentally. However, Paul said that all Scripture is "inspired by God" (2 Tim 3:16). 2. The Greek
word for "inspired" literally means "God–breathed". Peter called Paul's writings "Scripture" (2 Pet.
3:15–16) and said that holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. 3. Borg uses
what he calls "historical–metaphorical interpretation", which emphasizes metaphorical rather than
literal meanings. According ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Borg insists that faith is not very much about believing facts at all, but about "beloving God and all
that God beloves" Borg says that faith is not a condition of salvation, but is rather "about seeing
what is already true–that God loves us already."
Saving faith involves the truth of certain facts, such as the deity of Jesus, and He died for our sins,
and He Jesus physically rose from the dead. It is not faith itself that saves us, it is Jesus who saves
us. 7. Paul teaches in 1 Cor. 15, faith that is not founded on facts is useless. 8.
Borg is adamantly against the idea that Jesus is the only way to God. Borg believes that we have
misunderstood passages such as John 14:6, in which Jesus says, "I am the way, and the truth, and the
life; no one comes to the Father but through me." According to Borg, "the way" embodied in Jesus is
the path of death and resurrection", which, he says, is an idea common to all religions. In context,
however, John 14:6 is not discussing some abstract philosophy of "the way" as the path of
metaphorical death and resurrection. The passage asserts, rather, that Jesus Himself is the way. The
text says that no one comes to the Father "but through me".

Scripture On Conflict
Conflict. It surrounds and permeates every part of humanity. Everyone deals with it. Nations,
schools, churches, families, and individuals all must handle conflict from time to time. So, with all
this conflict, how are we supposed to know the correct way to handle it all? Scripture is full of
various kinds of conflict. Within the Bible, examples of how to and how not to manage every kind
of conflict lines the pages. Scripture provides the ultimate basis for God's plan to resolve conflict.
An Example of Cessation of Proximity In Acts 15:36–41, an interesting conflict sparks between two
of the greatest missionaries in the New Testament. Paul and Barnabas had traveled together on
Paul's first recorded missionary journey. If the results written in Acts 13:4–12 are any indication, the
two men appear to have made quite the team. What could have caused a conflict so great that the
only way to resolve it would be separation? Also going along on Paul's first missionary was
Barnabas' cousin John Mark. However, when Paul, Barnabas, and John Mark reached the city of
Perga in Asia Minor he left the group and returned to Jerusalem. Scripture does not cite any reason

profit but to open the minds and the hearts of the everyday believer. Billings wants to show that the
word isn't just a flat tune, but a musical instrument that flows with the harmony of the spirit. As the
music flows so does the change in our behavior, our attitude in everyday life and it all starts within
the scripture. The author discusses the need for a rule of faith as Christians approach Scripture. It is

Some mainly focus on their own theory and there own beliefs towards what they can get out of it for
themselves. We look at Taiwan for example; the number one selling book a few years back was Joel
Osteen's 'Prosperity Gospel' book. They used that book and his beliefs as a way to get rich with God
mindset. Sadly some of those in that country has used Jesus as a checklist for their other gods so
they are good to go. I'm not saying Joel Osteen is a bad preacher but we can see that his intentions
can be questionable to say the

Notes On Experiences With Scripture

  • 1. Notes On Experiences With Scripture Experiences with Scripture: Continually knowledge from the scriptures edifies and strengthens me; the knowledge and the truth found within the pages allows me the personal witness that God exists and loves me. The scriptures are the way we find the divinity of Christ, the good message of the gospel, and the ability to find direct revelation from past prophets and missionaries. Partially throughout my mission, I relied on the scriptures to lead and guide my teachings in the way the savior wanted his message portrayed. The ultimate message that Latter–Day Saints share with foreign lands, peoples, cultures, and socioeconomic groups is the message of redemption and grace; Christ's grace and the savior's love for all mankind by his gospel comes down to five topics. These topics that Christ taught come down to faith, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and finally enduring to the end. A question one may ask after hearing the gospel of Jesus Christ, "how can I know for a surety the truth of this message?" The answer proves simple, open the scriptures and feast upon Christ's words. Notably, one of the best places to find Christ's words on how to find the truth is found in Alma 32:28–43. Alma 32:28–43 teach how to accept the gospel and find the fruits of Christ's words. An example of coming closer to Christ by scripture reading is through diligently pondering the scriptures with an open heart, people will find the ability to accept the gospel. Indeed, people ... • 6. The Reliability Of Scripture Analysis In our culture there are conflicting opinions and theories about the Bible and its contents. Skeptics, believers and non–believers either try to defend of debunk the word of God. I believe the two most convincing arguments for the reliability of scripture are the unmistakable honesty of the Bible and the Pragmatic test of experience. First and foremost the Bible tells us that truth is an important and consistent entity in God's character: the book of John describes God as "the only true God, whose word is truth."(KJV Jhn17:3)The Bible also tells us that The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth (Jhn.14:17) Jesus, Himself said "I am the way the truth and the life..." (Jhn14:6) In the article "Arguments that the Bible is the Word of God" the author makes a very important observation that when the authors of the scriptures talk about themselves they are honest about their sins and failures; suggesting their words were inspired by God. These stories were not magically made up accounts, as Elmer Towns reveals in his book: "The Bible tells the story of real people doing real things in normal ways."(pg. 17) The Bible tells us that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. When Jesus walked the earth he healed blind eyes, unstopped deaf ears, cured disease and forgave sin. The miracles are far too many to list. I have also experienced modern day miracles. When I surrendered my life to Him, He forgave my sins. In my church I have witnessed a deaf woman get her hearing. I believe that these values do accurately reflect what is of greatest importance to me. There are alternate values that perhaps could have landed on this list, but these values ring true to me and are an accurate portrayal of that which I hold dear to me and use as guidance within my life decisions. 2. The most difficult values to discard were forgiveness, loving, and nurturing. I had an arduous time ranking items such as God's will and friendship. My predicament with God's will was my ruling on whether it was legitimately 'very important' to me, or whether I simply knew that it should be. It's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Based on my week, I spend the bulk of my time on school associated activities. This was not a surprise to me, what I was surprised by was the small amounts of time that I devote to my religion. Although I attend seminary, read my scriptures, and pray everyday, the accumulative time of all on these activities adds to just over an hour a day. I am quite aware of how I spend my time, it is very unusual for me to lay around and waste time of useless tasks. 2. Based on my week, I can only largely identify two main values from exercise #1: knowledge and service. This makes sense because I spend 32 hours sitting in class a week. This doesn't include time spent on homework or other corresponding activities. Something that did not make too large of an appearance was my spirituality. I will admit that my scripture studies and other related activities were extremely diminished this week. But it is to be expected that my religion isn't quite as evident within my daily schedule because it isn't practical to spend over 4 hours a day reading scriptures, there simply isn't enough time. True spirituality is seen through more subtle actions than in extravagant activities that draw large amounts of attention. With this considered, I do still need to increase the amount of time I spend improving my

  • 11. Memorizing Scripture There is a record of a great spiritual battle that was won only with words. Not angry words, not hateful or spiteful words. These were words that had been written centuries before this great incident. These were powerful words, words that carried authority, words that when used properly, at just the right time, became very effective weapons. Of course, I'm speaking of the response to Satan by Jesus during the time of his temptation ( Matthew ch. 4 and Luke ch. 4). On this occasion the body of Jesus was weak from extended fasting. The pressure of Satan was fierce, but the words that Jesus used were more than adequate for anything that Satan could use against Him. That is because the words that he chose were the inspired words of God. " The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I know that spiritually cold, careless Christians who seldom even read the bible certainly are not interested in memorizing scripture. But I'm talking about individuals who are interested and would like to be able to recall more of the Bible. Could it be that most people find memorization really difficult? I am a minister of the Gospel with more than thirty years experience and I can promise you scripture memory is a difficult process. The greatest problem that I find with memorizing scripture is that most people only know the old ROTE memory method. That is hard, boring, and not very effective. While some repetition is certainly necessary, there are very effective methods that can be used to help in the retention and recall of scripture. Many years ago, realizing that my ability to retain and recall scripture was poor at best, I set out on a quest to find methods for reinforcing my memory ability. What I found was that there is quite a lot of information on how the memory works and how to improve it. Much of what I learned has helped me tremendously. Over the years I have learned to effectively use my God given abilities like visualization, imagination, classification, organization, and association to help in the recall of God's ... • 13. Scripture Research Paper Christian theology is based upon the beliefs and traditions that Christians have practiced since the first century. At that time, a continuation and development of Judaism, as Christianity spread throughout the eastern Mediterranean world, each region began to develop an individualized approach to biblical interpretation and Christianity. Despite the fact that it started as a movement, Christianity has emerged into an internationally accepted religion that is composed of several denominations within the faith. Regardless of their specific set of practices, each denomination recognize Scripture as collection of God–breathed sacred writings that are contained within the Bible. Christians also believe that Scripture outlines a standard of living ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Patristic theologians such as Irenaeus of Lyons, from the second century, developed an official standard for interpreting Scripture. He claim this technique was also used by the first apostles. However, between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, some argued that questions about certain beliefs could not be answered by Scripture. Theologians of this era argued that there was a set of unwritten traditions that was passed down through the generations within the local church. According to the theologian, the unwritten source of tradition was arranged by God tas a second set of revelation to supplement Scripture and not replace it. Believing this, the Council of Trent ruled that Scripture could not though of as the only source of revelation. They argue that any belief not found in Scripture is justified by the appeal to unwritten traditions. A Scripture–shaped worldview has many rewards for the Christian. Moving towards a deliberative theology helps the Christian to process the beliefs that was embedding in them at an earlier time in life. In other words, a biblical worldview allows the Christian to form a logical understanding of the scriptures, traditions or practices and how to apply them in a modern day application. For example, having a Scripture– shaped worldview helps the individual to behave in a manner that is pleasing God as well as dwell peaceable with others. Also, through a biblical worldview, the Christian will understand how to live within a paganist world without intermingling or conforming to their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Scripture Summary The second theme is Scriptures. McMinn (2011) exhorts Christian counselors to consider when it would be pertinent to use explicit or implicit Scriptures in counseling and with which clients (McMinn, 2011, p. 118). According to McMinn (2011), "Scripture is powerful and can keep us focused on timeless truth in the midst of shifting standards of right and wrong" (p. 115). Furthermore, McMinn confers the importance of considering the client's needs, the therapeutic rapport, and ethical principles before utilizing Scriptures in counseling (McMinn, 2011). Most importantly, McMinn (2011) suggests that for Scriptures to have a significant influence in the lives of both counselors and counselee, it must be internalized and personalized outside of the counseling session (p. 115). The third theme is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... McMinn (2011) explains the proper role of confession and how confession is interrelated with guilt and penance. It is important to realize that Scriptures offer an appropriate understanding of confession and that confession also involves humility (McMinn, 2011). In essence, counseling is a representation of confession by which the counselee develops a sense of self and need (McMinn, 2011). McMinn (2011) presents the role of redemption and the redemptive worldview in Christian counseling. A redemptive worldview conveys that through God's redemption individuals can restore and gain health and completeness. In other words, God has to power to redeem people (McMinn, ... • 17. Jesus Vs Scripture These two books basically walked through the Old Testament giving a very brief overview of what happened and how it points to Christ, before and after His incarnation. While they both went through telling a story, Roberts was more concerned with treating Scripture as a metanarrative. He walked through giving points to show how the story was being developed. His concern was for the Kingdom of God. Clowney, on the other hand, was not so much concerned with how the Scripture was connected to itself but how the major characters in the Old Testament foreshadowed how Christ would be. • 19. Greg In Scripture Greg then launches into the topic of prayer, he says, "The Pharisees were caught up in repeating ritualized prayers over and over again. They seemed to believe that the longer the prayer, the more spiritual and pleasing to God. But God isn't interested in eloquence. Not at all. Prayer should come from the heart. He isn't interested in how perfectly our prayers sound, or whether they rhyme, or whether we throw in any King James English, or how long they are. He is concerned with how genuine they are. One of the most eloquent prayers in Scripture comes from a man who said,'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' (Luke 18:13). Now that is an effective prayer. That is a man who was honest with God. He said what he was thinking and simply laid it out before the Lord. And guess what? Jesus Himself said that man's prayer was heard." • 21. Discrepancy Vs Scripture In approaching scripture as a completely divine and human work, there is opportunity to understand how this is demonstrated through scripture. One now seek to reconcile the discrepancies instead of overlook them or let scripture prove itself. As Porter explains the main approaches, "The two articles by Blomberg and Grudem are, I believe, fairly typical approaches to the major issues raised regarding the authority of the Bible. One is the attempt to answer all the issues raised by such a position by refuting attempts to find errors within the Bible (without the original documents) and the other is to marshal all of the Bible's own comments regarding itself, in effect to make the Bible a self–authenticating document. Neither has proved to be successful, virtually by the proponents' own admissions". This assumes that discrepancy in scripture is only being worked out from a specific and modern context. It is only from the view of the interpreter. This shows the importance of viewing biblical narrative not only from the modern–day context, but also from the historical one. ... Catholic Explanation Of Scripture The Catholic approach attempts to find the truth by the interpretation and explanation of Scripture includes three exegetical methodologies which are: reading, interpreting, and understanding. Specifically, exegesis takes into account a thorough critical analysis of the meaning of biblical scriptures in terms of their historical and literary context. These methods play a role and contribute to our understanding of Scripture and this includes: 1) ideological criticism, is the examination of bias, assumption, or strongly held beliefs which may influence biases; 2) literary criticism, which focuses on context of the written text including the author, language, time it was written, genre, plot, characters and symbolism; 3) sociohistorical criticism, explores the "conditions of life" (i.e. geography, customs, traditions, religious practices, cultures, social norms, and family life. For example, ideological and sociohistorical criticism is evidenced in the letter to the Ephesians about morality of slavery. Trible's Scripture To continue, what I think Trible was trying to get at when she was asking that people that interpret scripture must reread rather than rewriting scripture and religious texts is that reading critically is more important than reading with preconceived notions and trying to prove that the text is in fact a piece of work that puts men over women, women over men, men dominating women, and or women dominating men, but seeing women and men as equal with one another. When scripture is rewritten, it loses its context just as the story of Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden and peoples interpretations have twisted the meaning and the story behind the creation of woman and man, the earth, and all else that inhabits it. Interesting in the sense that it questions, not the text, by the reader and their understandings of sex, gender, and how the text is read by many through a patriarchal lens rather than taken for what it is. When Trible brings up Yahweh as being an androgynous being that, from what I took from her piece, was that God is more closely spoken of and more closely associated with a mother figure; the seamstress, the nurturer, the care taker, the housekeeper, and the mother. Trible even goes as far as referring to God as a "maternal Deity". So while she discusses Yahweh; the God of Israel, as androgynous they're also seems to be a more feminine leaning interpretation coming through in how she's read the text and based on the tasks done by God. Those tasks were known as task commonly done by women during the time. Over all this was an informative text, it really makes you question what it would be like if social stereotypes weren't built on masculine dominance and patriarchy; how would religious text be interpreted ... Employed by two different groups, such slogans often lack the backing of intellectual understanding. The first group repeats Christian colloquialisms in a desperate attempt to exhibit a fake intellectual understanding to his or her peers. The second group mindlessly recites Christian expressions because of tradition and expectation of the church body. One major concern with the Evangelical view of the authority Scripture resides not within doctrine, but rather their methodology. Charles Finney, although an important flare in early Evangelical revivals and stalwart supporter of the authority of Scripture, often forced individuals into repentance through various means–such as alter calls. Finney, thus, subsequently replaced the authority of the Bible with his own. Although Evangelicals carry flaws, the Evangelical view of the authority of Scripture parallels that of early Christian thought and doctrine, thus providing an expansive lineage of authenticity of the Scriptures. Furthermore, such validity of Scripture's authority cultivates a heart of acceptance in the Christian. Thus, Scripture holds authority not only in its pages, but also in the Christian's heart. Additionally, from the start, Evangelicals have sought to uphold the authority of Scripture by examining it in its full context, while contemporaries of Evangelicalism–Liberalism and Neo–Orthodoxy–exploit certain sections of the Bible, without proper exploration of it as a whole. Most take for granted the Bible they have and never question how it came into being. Today, we have 39 books of the Old Testament and 27 books of the New Testament. There was a time, however, that we did not have a canon. Bruce defines canon as books of the Bible that were recognized to be considered scripture (p. 17). The importance of the canon and how it was developed was intriguing to professor and author F.F. Bruce. The rest of the section demonstrates the Church Fathers and their views of what was to be considered scripture and the councils that affirmed the inspired scripture. Bruce concludes by explaining the criteria used for writings to be considered canon. He goes into more depth on the inspiration of the scriptures – an integral part of how the canon came together. Everyone ends up doing what's right in their own eyes, then defining Christianity any way they want. Individuals will claim that God speaks to them directly and that they have no need for Scripture (González p. 38). Someone said once, "Jesus healed two blind men. • 60. Tradition And Scripture Of The Church Properly understood tradition is no rival to scripture but its necessary complement. Tradition and scripture have been part of the church from its conception, honouring the memory of Jesus is in itself a tradition as we try to live in his image. Celebrating and reflecting on this in the church gatherings is how we define our beliefs and ourselves. There is tradition all through the scriptures and why they will always complement each other. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states "Sacred tradition and Sacred Scripture, then are bound closely together, and communicate with one another. For both of them, flowing out from the same divine well–spring, come together in some fashion to form one thing, and move towards the same goal." Each of them makes present and fruitful in the Church the mystery of Christ, who promised to remain with his own always, to the close of the age. Being one of the oldest religions Catholicism has been very close to the scriptures and over time has developed many traditions, and over the centuries has also be the centre of controversy for those very traditions, as the origin was questioned. Theologians have deliberated the topic of Tradition and Scripture for centuries. One of the major clashes was the reformation when Luther challenged the Catholic church on the practices of indulgences and purgatory. He declared in one of his Theses that ' The true treasure of the church is the most holy Gospel of the glory and grace of God", although ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. Scripture Verse The Scripture verse I chose was Genesis (1–4). I chose this scripture verse because the creation of this world is important to us and our religion. I chose to do an I with flowers around it because flowers were created on day 3 of the creation of this world. The joys of doing this project was to read this scripture verse and to reflect on what this verse means. When I reflected on this verse I thought about how amazing it is to see the little flowers and trees and streams that I run through on my trail system in my neighborhood so that's why creation is so amazing and mind blowing to me. The challenges in this project were reading my handwriting and trying to write neatly that is very very hard for me because I have a hard time writing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Scripture And Cosmogony The Sacred Scripture and Cosmogony of Islam and Christianity In every religion around the world, there are very important scriptures and beliefs on how the universe came into being. Christianity and Islam are no different than any other religion in those aspects. They have similar thoughts on things in the sacred scriptures they have, and they also have opposing views. Also, these two religions have different views on the creation of the universe, both of these topics will be discussed here. It is important to understand the views on the following topics by these two religions for a number of reasons. Much of the New Testament talks about the life of Jesus, and these books were written by Jesus' disciples. The original texts that made up the Bible are gone or lost, and have been copied various times to preserve the teachings. The Bible is broken down in ways like the Qur'an. First, it is broke into two "Testaments", one is called the Old Testament, which was originally written in Hebrew. The Old Testament talks about the creation of the world to the laws a person should follow. The second half is called the New Testament, was written in Greek, and much of this talks about the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. It also has "letters written by leaders of the early church" (Geoghegan, 14), and also has the end of the time prophecies. In each of the Testaments there are books (think of the chapters of a novel), here are a total of 66 books in the Bible that we have today, in each book there are also verses like in the Qur'an. The contemporary expression of the Christian Bible is just as import as the Qur'an for a Muslim. There are a few slight differences though. Many people go to church to praise and worship God and a pastor gives a lecture about a subject in the Bible, Muslims would read a passage from the Qur'an and then explain how it applies to their lives. A Christian could (and does) do this, but typically it isn't as rigid of a structure. However, there are many different "branches" of Christianity from Baptist to Catholic, and they each have ... • 66. The Bible and Understanding Scripture The Bible and Understanding Scripture The Bible is God's word to His people. Christians are taught to read and study the Bible daily. A new person in the body of Christ would understand reading and studying just as one reads a regular book or study material. Often Christians are not taught how to read and study, instead they internalize reading and studying as memorization of the Bible because most Christians can remember the word of God without a complete understanding of scripture. When Christians are taught the history of the Bible and how the Bible should be interpreted, they will be able to understand the message God is relaying to them. Understanding the Bible was written as an entire literary book will unfold all the messages ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A systematic study of the Scripture to discover the original, intended meaning called an exegesis. An exegesis is to hear the word of God as the people in the Bible heard the word of God to find out what was the original intent of the words of the Bible. (Stuart, 2003) Most Christians unknowingly do exegesis by explaining how people lived in the Bible days and why we do not do those same things today. Although anyone can do an exegesis it is recommended to seek the help of an expert when attempting to do a reputable exegesis if needed. Anytime Scripture is read an exegesis is the first step in interpretation. There many tools to help develop a good exegesis, but the main elements are to read Scripture carefully and ask the right questions. (Stuart, 2003) The two basic questions one should ask while reading Scripture are: those that relate to context and content. A good translation, a Bible dictionary, and good commentaries are great tools for one to use on a quest to developing a good exegesis. The second task is hermeneutics. Hermeneutics is basically explaining or interpreting biblical concepts, theories, and principles from the Bible days into today's society. Hermeneutics is necessary to prevent people from interpreting their own philosophy of the Bible. A solid exegesis is included in hermeneutics. • 68. The Canonization Of The Scriptures Essay Determining what exactly influenced the official canonization of the Scriptures that we have today is debated among many Christian theologians and scholars. It is important to understand how the books that are found in the Bible today, where Christians receive their foundation of belief, were selected and what encouraged the church to actually close their canon and make it official. The church began with a canon, the Jewish Scriptures, but as the Gospels were written and the apostolic writings were located, published, and recognized, the need for a closed canon became imperative. The church was beginning to expand quickly, and with the expansion of the church, different and somewhat false beliefs were soon to follow. Some of these beliefs became stretched to their full extent and were recognized as heresies. One heretic in particular drew a significant amount of attention from the church, and we know him as Marcion and his heresies as Marcionism. The Marcion heresy greatly influenced the official canonization of Scripture by drawing the church of Rome's attention to the need of a sure and solid closed canon. Marcion's History and Heresy Marcion of Sinope was born around 100 AD. He was brought up in the apostolic faith and his father served as a leader in the church, so he came from a very religious background. As Marcion grew up in the church, the apostle Paul's teaching appealed strongly to him, but somewhere in life, Marcion detached himself from the traditional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Scripture Passage This parable in this scripture passage has been one that has troubled me every time I hear it or read it. It brings up more questions than answers for me and I think I am safe in saying I am not alone. Why would Jesus tell his followers that you have to bother and pester God to get your prayers answered? Why would God be worried what would happen to him if he does not answer my prayer? Why would the Catholic Church make it seem ethical and morally acceptable to think that I can tell God what is best for me? Finally, the toughest question for me, why would God use a dishonest judge to represent God? The way I usually reconciled this was to focus on the phrase "praying always" or as St. Paul says "pray without ceasing". The rest of this parable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I was slow to respond or acknowledge the calling of the Divine Widow. However, when I judged that God needed to respond to my needs I expected an immediate answer. If I did not get a response or got an answer I did not like I would not go back to God and ask again, I just did what I judged was best for me. There were times when I gave in and graced God with my yes just like the judge out of concern that God will strike me down. It was 16 years before I came back to church, my faith and God when I walked through the doors here at Sts. Peter and Paul with my then girlfriend who is now my wife, Gloria. I must be honest though my intentions were not pure, the only reason I came back was to see if this church would be a good spot to get married. However, once the door closed behind me and I sat down in this quiet and Sacred Space, I felt I was home. • 72. Inerrancy Of Scripture There will be a point within any christens life where they will be asked to defend why they believe in the Bible and the Word of God. Peter even states that we should "always be ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you..." In this particular case the jogger is questioning if the Bible is authoritative. I would explain to the jogger that the bible is authoritative because of the divine inspiration and the inerrancy of the scriptures. These simple truths are the basic presuppositions of the Christian faith. The first presupposition, Christians must believe is that the bible is an inspired text from God to men. 2 Timothy 3:16 states that "All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching,..." Therefore, as Christians we accept the truth that the scripture is inspired by God supernaturally. Even though, men created the bible we believe that God's Holy Spirit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Christians we accept the truth that the scripture is without error and is accurate and truthful through the scripture. There are four basic arguments as to why the scripture is without error. The first argument is the biblical argument. This argument is where scripture reinforces the inerrancy of scripture. An example of this is how in the beginning God gave the criteria for Israel to determine if a scripture came from Him or is from a false prophet or prophecy in Deuteronomy 13:1–5: 18:20– 22. The lord tells his people that if a prophet gives a prophecy to unknown god or gods they are not to be followed. The second argument is the historical argument. The basic premise of the historical argument is that this is what the church has accepted a believed since the beginning of the church. Therefore, since the church has held the belief that the Bible is without error since the beginning of the church. There is more credibility that the bible is without ... • 74. Canon Scripture And Canon Of Scripture Canon of Scripture When we talk about Scripture, we have to discuss the source of our revelation. In fact, without an understanding and personal standpoint/beliefs on the canon of Scripture, one is not able to build a solid foundation in other matters regarding Scripture, including the authority of Scripture, the inerrancy, the clarity, the necessity, and the sufficiency. Often the canon of Scripture is a prevalent topic in the Christian faith among believers as there is a debate which books of the Holy Bible are considered to be part of the canon. However, although there are other books that have been added (including the Deutro–Chronical Books in the Roman Catholic church), there are in fact only 66 books in the canon of Scripture. There are 39 Old Testament books and 27 New Testament books that are included in the canon of Scripture. While some churches (including the Roman Catholic Church) believe that the church should determine what books are in the New Testament canon, God is responsible for the canon of Scripture. The Old Testament canon includes the Pentateuch Books (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy), the Historical Books (Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Ester), the Poetical Books (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon), and the Prophetical Books ( Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, ... • 76. Borg's Scripture Analysis By: Charmaine Warford Winter 2015 A Reflection on Borg who writes "the Bible is not to be interpreted literally, factually, and absolutely" Borg proposes a new form of Christianity 1. that he calls the "emerging paradigm". According to Borg the Bible is a human product and should be interpreted metaphorically and understood sacramentally. However, Paul said that all Scripture is "inspired by God" (2 Tim 3:16). 2. The Greek word for "inspired" literally means "God–breathed". Peter called Paul's writings "Scripture" (2 Pet. 3:15–16) and said that holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. 3. Borg uses what he calls "historical–metaphorical interpretation", which emphasizes metaphorical rather than literal meanings. According ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Borg insists that faith is not very much about believing facts at all, but about "beloving God and all that God beloves" Borg says that faith is not a condition of salvation, but is rather "about seeing what is already true–that God loves us already." Saving faith involves the truth of certain facts, such as the deity of Jesus, and He died for our sins, and He Jesus physically rose from the dead. It is not faith itself that saves us, it is Jesus who saves us. 7. Paul teaches in 1 Cor. 15, faith that is not founded on facts is useless. 8. Borg is adamantly against the idea that Jesus is the only way to God. Borg believes that we have misunderstood passages such as John 14:6, in which Jesus says, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me." According to Borg, "the way" embodied in Jesus is the path of death and resurrection", which, he says, is an idea common to all religions. In context, however, John 14:6 is not discussing some abstract philosophy of "the way" as the path of metaphorical death and resurrection. The passage asserts, rather, that Jesus Himself is the way. The text says that no one comes to the Father "but through me". ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Scripture On Conflict Conflict. It surrounds and permeates every part of humanity. Everyone deals with it. Nations, schools, churches, families, and individuals all must handle conflict from time to time. So, with all this conflict, how are we supposed to know the correct way to handle it all? Scripture is full of various kinds of conflict. Within the Bible, examples of how to and how not to manage every kind of conflict lines the pages. Scripture provides the ultimate basis for God's plan to resolve conflict. An Example of Cessation of Proximity In Acts 15:36–41, an interesting conflict sparks between two of the greatest missionaries in the New Testament. Paul and Barnabas had traveled together on Paul's first recorded missionary journey. If the results written in Acts 13:4–12 are any indication, the two men appear to have made quite the team. What could have caused a conflict so great that the only way to resolve it would be separation? Also going along on Paul's first missionary was Barnabas' cousin John Mark. However, when Paul, Barnabas, and John Mark reached the city of Perga in Asia Minor he left the group and returned to Jerusalem. Scripture does not cite any reason or provide any explanation. Interpreting Scripture Billings expresses "I want to introduce readers to the practice of interpreting Scripture in the context of the triune activity of God, the God who uses Scripture to reshape the church into Christ's image by the Spirit's power" (xiii). Billings wants to show that the word isn't just a flat tune, but a musical instrument that flows with the harmony of the spirit.
