2. Introduction
• For my radio factual, I will produce a podcast around 4-10
minutes long, in the format of a documentary. The topic I have
chosen to talk about is whether or not dogs should be
licensed in all homes.
• The reason why I have chosen to do this is because recently
my brother was attacked by a dog. Dog attacks are a massive
moral panic in the news at the moment and I feel its relevant,
interesting and I also have an interview set up with the
publisher from the Manchester Evening News newspaper.
3. Primary Research
• For my primary research I did 3 different questionnaires. One
for the general public, one for the publisher of the
Manchester evening news and a different one for the young
boy that was attacked. I did this because each questionnaire
has specific questions that I want to ask. For example, I cant
ask a question to the public that was made specifically for the
publisher. So the questionnaires are slightly different. These
are the results I got from the general public.
4. What people think needs to happen to bring the risk
of a dog attack from happening.
People who think they should banned from homes
completly
People who think they should trained right.
People who think a muzzle should be put onto dogs
People who think dogs should correctly controlled
People think the dogs should be licesned

attack form happening

The question I asked the public was what do you think needs to
happen to bring the risk of a dog attack from happening?
The majority of them said that all dogs should be licensed. The
results I got I were really happy with, this is because some of the
answers I got were things like, ‘they should be muzzled’ or ‘they
should be trained correctly’. These are other ways of reducing
dogs attacking young children.

• From the results I got from my questionnaire I give the general
public, 11 out of 15 of them think that dogs should be licensed
to help stop a lot of dog attacks from happening. However the
ones that said they should’nt have a license had no evidence
to support why they thought that. So in theory, 100% of the
people I asked think that dogs should be licensed, simply
because the other people had no evidence to support there
answer.

• I asked the public ‘Do you think the majority of dog attacks
happen due to how the dog has been brought up?’
• Eleven out of fifteen of them think that dogs should be
licensed to help stop a lot of dog attacks from happening.
However the ones that said they should’nt have a license had
no evidence to support why they thought that.
10. Primary Research
This is the boy I interviewed for my radio
podcast, also my brother. Both his legs and his
arms were bitten and also his face. He was in
hospital for 6 days and needed 3 operations
including plastic surgery on his right leg. Louis was
very lucky to survive as to get away from the dog
that attacked him, he had to climb on top of a car
but the dog didn't’t stop as it dragged him down.
It had a massive effect on him as it took him 8
months to finally start getting back on his feet.
The dog that attacked him was a pit bull and was
a family dog that lived around the corner from my
house.had an affect on the family as well as Louis him self. My mum almost lost
It also
her job due to the amount of time she had to take off work and look after Louis.
This meant I had to stay away for a week as my mum couldn't’t take care of us or
afford to feed the family.
As much as an effect the attack had on Louis, it also caused many problems in the
family, which is why I feel a new law should be put in to license all dogs.
11. Secondary Research – Moral
Panic
• When researching I found that dog attacks were creating a
huge moral panic in the news at the moment. Every year it
gets worse and more and more children get killed or seriously
injured. People are protesting for a new law to come in. Its not
just stray dogs that attack children and young people, more
family dogs are getting or already more dangerous than
before.
12. Quantitative Research
• Each year, approximately 28,000 facial dog bites are reported
in the UK, with just over 19,000 of them requiring plastic
surgery.’
• The quote itself shows how serious every incident is and how
so many people are protesting for every dog in UK to be
licensed. A lot of dog attacks happen every year and my
argument is that I think every dog should have a license; in my
opinion I think less children will get attacked because all dogs
would have been checked over by police to make sure there
safe. Unfortunately, not every child will be able to prevent
being attacked by a dog, however I believe licensing dogs will
help reduce it.
13. Qualitative Research
The case of Lexi Branson:
The four-year-old little girl killed by the family pet on Tuesday, is a tragedy that makes very difficult reading for
anyone, and the media attention given to it will make many people think carefully about whether or not dog ownership
is a good idea.
In the first 5 months of 2013, pit bulls inflicted 93 percent of all dog bite fatalities. This is well above the average of 60
percent from 2005 to 2012.
Below is a list of people who have been attacked by pit bulls in 2013. Even though the majority of the list are
children, It just shows that not only young children get attacked, but dogs do target older people as well.
• Betty Todd, 65-years old - Killed by her son's pet pit bull.
Christian Gormanous, 4-years old - Killed by his neighbor's chained pit bull
• Elsie Grace, 91-years old - Killed by her son's two pit bulls
• Isaiah Aguilar, 2-years old - Killed by his neighbor's chained pit bull
• Ryan Maxwell, 7-years old - Killed by a pit bull while visiting family friends
• Daxton Borchardt, 14-months old - Killed by his babysitter's two pet pit bulls
• Monica Laminack, 21-months old - Killed by her family's pet pit bulls
• Tyler Jett, 7-years old - Killed by his neighbor's two pit bull-mix dogs
• Claudia Gallardo, 38-years old - Killed by a property owner's pit bull
• Jordyn Arndt, 4-years old - Killed by her babysitter's pit bull
• Beau Rutledge, 2-years old - Killed by his family's pet pit bull
• Rachael Honabarger, 35-years old - Killed by her family German shepherd
• Pamela Devitt, 63-years old - Killed by a pack of loose pit bulls
• Carlton Freeman, 80-years old - Killed by four roaming pit bulls
•
14. Conclusions
• In conclusion, from the results I got from the questionnaire, I
am really happy with the results I got. I feel some of the
people I asked had no idea what they were talking about and
answered the questions based on a guess.
• Overall, the final question I asked the public was ‘To avoid the
risk of young children being attacked, do you think that all
dogs should be licensed?’
• I asked a total of 15 people, and 11 of them said yes and gave
a reason why. The others said no but had no evidence to
support it.
